yards and a touchdown. Vaughn also had 82 yards receiving. Kansas State defeated Kansas 47-27.

TCU: A+

The regular season ended off with a bang. Here is how each team performed in the final week of conference play.

Kansas State: A

All Kansas State needed was a win over its rival Kansas in order to get a chance to play for the Big 12 championship. Running back Deuce Vaughn had another stellar performance, rushing for 147

TCU had arguably their best game against Iowa State. Quarterback Max Duggan was great, as he went 17-for-24 for 212 yards and three touchdowns. The offense was clicking on all cylinders. TCU won its game over Iowa State 62-14.

Oklahoma State: D

An injury-riddled OSU team welcomed in West Virginia and was hoping to bounce back from its Bedlam loss. The freshmen were the main faces of the offense as quarterback Garret Rangel and run

ning back Ollie Garden were in charge of the back field. Gordon rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown. OSU couldn’t put together a late drive and fell to West Virginia 24-19.

Oklahoma: C

The Oklahoma Sooners faced Texas Tech in an offensive showdown. The Sooner offense was firing, as they tallied 672 yards of offense led by quarter back Dillon Gabriel and wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. as both connected for 162 yards and two touch downs. The Sooner defense however failed to get many stops, and Oklahoma lost its game 51-48.

Fanfare of Lights begins the Cowboy holiday season

Holiday cheer is in the air and all over campus.

On Tuesday night, the OSU male acapella choir, Pokeapella, de livered a short holiday concert to commence the setup of holiday lights around campus. Pokea pella sang a few beloved holiday songs such as “White Christmas” and “Silent Night” before finishing off with their rendition of the OSU alma mater.

Around the set, the beloved horse BB and Pete’s Pet Posse gathered to greet any students or alumni who came to enjoy the show. Free hot chocolate and apple cider was given out to warm anyone up on the cold evening. The venue had a decent turnout, with plenty of people sitting back and enjoying the music and company.

Afterwards, Vice President of Student Af fairs Doug Hallenbeck delivered a short speech to commemorate the holiday season.

“This is a special

tradition we have, being able to come together as a community to celebrate the holiday season,” Dr. Hallenback said. “It’s good to remember the goodwill and magic in the eyes of children as they anticipate presents.”

Dr. Hallenback then spoke of the vari ous holiday traditions he enjoyed with his fam ily, such as going to get peppermint milkshakes at Braum’s and driving around at night, enjoying the lights on houses that must have taken hours to set up.

OSU is no stranger to playing title-caliber teams.

Being in a confer ence like the Big 12 means that conference play is a battle night after night, as Mike Boynton has already called this year’s Big 12 “a gaunt let.” Non-conference play is looked at as a time for teams to prepare for the more prominent matchups down the road, and the Cowboys have a prime opportunity for an elite matchup on Thurs day night against UConn.

“They shoot it well, they’ve got great size at every position, they got experience,” Boynton said. “I’ve coached against a couple of national champion ship teams and this team looks like those teams.”

The Huskies, who

are ranked No. 8 in the country, are fresh off the heels of defeating an other Big 12 team, Iowa State, in the Phil Knight Invitational Champion ship. This pushed their record to 8-0 on the year, as they will now host the Cowboys in a contest for the Big East-Big 12 Battle series. Even with the high AP Poll rank

ing, Boynton feels that they may be even better than their ranking.

“I don’t know if eight’s high enough to be honest... they’re really good. They got all the ingredients you need to be a national champion ship contender,” Boynton said.

After that second season I was basically running the weight room and then a few coaches from Memphis that I was familiar with walked in one day. One of them was the old head coach here at Memphis, Mike Norvell, who is obviously and Florida State now, and then the other one was at the time the offensive coordinator, Kenny Dilling ham.

From there we just talked. I hadn’t seen coach Norvell since he re cruited me out of high school when he was at Tulsa. So, we just conversed for a little bit and talked it up and caught up. Then a week later (Norvell) called me and offered me the quality control position at Memphis. Then the rest is history.”

What has been your favorite memory so far as a coach?

“Probably in the 2019 season when (Memphis) won the American Conference Championship and we made an appearance in the Cotton Bowl. I think we played Penn State. We lost but it was a really good game. Honestly, looking back on it too, there

were so many moments that we could have pulled in front and honestly put it away but we didn’t. Regardless, it was a hell of an experience and hopefully we can make another New Years Six game again soon.”

What was your favorite season at OSU and why?

“Well, from a football standpoint, definitely the 2015 season. That 10-0 start was fun and all, but beating TCU like we did at home was super satisfy ing. Beating Texas at their place was also satisfying. I mean, it’s Texas. Going to Central Michigan to start the year was alright. Mount Pleasant really is a solid place. Then obviously going to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl was

all that you could ask for. That alone was one of the more surreal moments of my life. It’s something every little football fan dreams of, playing in a New Year’s Six bowl game.”

How different is Stillwater now to when you were in college?

“Not too different to be honest. I haven’t really visited that much or as much as I probably should have at least. But I mean, other than some drastic stadium improvements and renova tions, campus honestly looks relatively the same. I’m sure student life hasn’t changed that much either.”

December holidays to celebrate besides Christmas

Christmas spirit is in the air, but only for those who celebrate it.

The month of December is famed for its red and green jolly, but there are a plethora of other holidays that occur. Some of the major ones include Hanuk kah and Kwanzaa.

Hanukkah is celebrated Dec. 18 through Dec. 26 this year. The Jewish holiday is also known as the Festival of Lights. It celebrates the Jewish ances tors that rededicated the Second Temple in Jerusalem after the Maccabean Revolt. They lit a menorah with enough oil to last one day, but it miraculously burned for eight. This is symbolized by the eight candles of a menorah.

Kwanzaa is an African holiday celebrated Dec. 26 through Jan. 1. The celebrations of Kwanzaa can vary from family to family, but it is based on seven principles, also known as Nguzo Saba. These principles include unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.

The holiday was created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966. He made the holiday in an effort to bring the African American community together.

While there are plenty of holi days, there are other events happening in December.

Dressember is an event that raises awareness around human trafficking. Participants wear dresses every day during the month of December to show their solidarity in efforts against human trafficking.

The event was started in 2009 by Blythe Hill, who wanted to cre ate change with her skills as a blogger and fashion lover. Her idea behind the movement was to create awareness, and it stands on the pillars of prevention, advocacy, intervention and survivor empowerment.

There are also plenty of national days that happen in December.

Rosa Parks Day, National Women Support Women Day and National Pep permint Bark day all fall on Dec. 1.

International Day of People with Disabilities is on Dec. 3 and is a United Nations sanctioned event.

Dr. Hallenback then encour aged everyone to do the same. With a “Happy Holidays” and a “Go Pokes,” He closed off the speech by thanking Oklahoma State Univer sity students for being a light in the dark.

To the surprise and delight of many, a special guest came to help turn on the Christmas lights around Edmond Low Library and the Student Union—Santa Claus. A few people in the crowd were dressed as elves and greeted everyone. After

a brief countdown, the campus was lit up by orange Christmas lights.

Shortly after, the festivities moved to the Student Union for holiday crafts, free gift wrapping, a 25% off coupon for any University Bookstore items and plenty more.

Pete’s Pet Posse and BB remained outside to the delight of anyone leaving the Student Union.

Students and alumni attend ing said they had a great time, enjoying the music and refresh ments alongside the beautiful sight of the campus being lit up by lights.

Fanfare of Lights is a beloved, an nual tradition for the Cowboy com munity and it’s safe to say that it will continue for many more years to come.

Jake Williams pinched his fingers and shoveled artificial snow flakes into his left hand.

He said he was in a hurry. Headed to class in a few minutes. But first, he stopped to make a homemade snowglobe.

Williams, a sopho more computer science major, along with a handful of others, at tended OSU’s Student Arts Alliances’ DIY Wednesday holiday crafts activity in the Student Union.

The event moved from the Student Union plaza to an extra con ference room in the building’s fourth floor. Holiday music from a Bluetooth speaker serenaded the students as they worked on various crafts.

Korbin Hamner, SAA graduate assistant, said the event was the organization’s last of the semester. SAA’s events are one of the organiza tions’ main components.

“One of our main goals is to kinda just show students a lot of different art medium so they can see what’s all out there,” he said. “All of our events are for people who are good at art or bad at art. It’s just

With finals ap proaching, SAA’s event provided an opportunity for students to stop and take a breather. A re laxed activity for anyone. Hamner said the organi zation decided to make holiday crafts instead of Christmas. At a public university like OSU, students worldwide and several religions flock to Stillwater.

“That’s what we always try to do is be as inclusive as we can,” Hamner said. “There’s always a possibility that you miss something even when it’s not your intention. That’s why we try to always make our stuff as broad as possible to include anybody that wants to come out and enjoy it.”

Amy Wu, a senior studying hotel and tour ism management, also participated in the event. She talked as she tied colored paper-like fabric around a wire wreath frame. She used teal and white. A quick project that she said she’ll hang on her front door. SAA’s events provide an op portunity for students to work on something new and make friends in the process.

The next SAA event will be a cross stitching activity Jan. 26.

Q&A with Minnesota wrestling coach Brandon Eggum

As the Big Ten has become extremely competitive top to bottom, how has that changed your recruiting and coaching approach?

No. 10 OSU will host No. 13 Minnesota on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena. The O’Colly spoke with Golden Gophers coach Brandon Eggum about the dual that will feature several ranked bouts.

The conversation has been edited for length and clarity. Minnesota is 2-0, how would you assess the team’s development so far?

Eggum: “There’s been a lot of ups and downs even with the first open (tournament). Especial ly with some of the guys being out with the duals, it’s been pretty exciting. I think our guys are getting better all the time and it is early. Our goal is to be ready in March and that’s our plan. We’ve always done a really good job from where he started the season to where we finished. If you look at the history of where our teams are ranked coming in and where they finished, consistently it’s a really positive difference but it’s pretty dramatic how high we are finishing. That being said, I’m ex cited. I think our guys are where they’re supposed to be. Everyone has a lot to continue to build on.”

“I don’t think anything has changed. Our approach has always been like that. You try to look at the way the duals go as far as how you match up. There are only 10 matches. It’s different in high school where there are 14 matches. There would be less room for error but when there are 10 matches and you have a guy or two out, you see how difficult it can be. This year, we’re unique. We actually have more depth than we’ve ever had. You’ve seen that in some of our duals. We’re putting some of our new guys out there with the new freshman rule where redshirts are able to com pete. You see like last week at 141, Vance VomBaur beats No. 9 Clay Carlson from South Dakota State. That’s pretty impressive. We don’t always have that. I guess just the biggest thing is I just look at the duals and I don’t read too much into them even early on with some different teams. The biggest thing is that you’re get ting better every week. With 10 matches, one match doesn’t go your way or you have a guy out or you have an upset, it’s easy to pick up a big win or maybe suffer a loss. That would be different when you’re looking at it as far as a team tournament. That can be exciting about the wins we pick up. I just know this weekend will be a really good test. Looking at

Oklahoma State, I think they’ve had some guys wrestle well. I’m sure they’re feeling the same way. They are still testing their guys and lineup growth is needed but this should be a really good weekend for all of our guys to see where they’re at.”

With the new redshirt rule where you can wrestle a fresh man more than once, how does that impact the way you think about the lineup?

“The biggest thing for me is that you still want to win the dual. The guys, you try to utilize them, give them the opportunity where you could maybe give a guy a break if there’s a guy who was sick, maybe injured or needed a weekend off for whatever reason. You didn’t really have that oppor tunity in the past. It’s nice to have that flexibility.”

Sunday’s battle at 157 between No. 5 Brayton Lee and No. 10 Kaden Gfeller will be big. Why did he miss last week’s dual against South Dakota State?

“Brayton got sick at Thanksgiving. He was running a fever. There were thoughts of wrestling him Sunday because we just knew with that matchup and having a couple of guys out it was gonna be tough. We ended up winning six of the 10 matches. That will be a big match.”

It’s on like Donkey Kong: A new “Super Mario Bros. Movie” trailer

beats him up handily, as it cuts to Prin cess Peach and Toad watching in horror.

From karts to Kongs, there are references abound in the newest trailer for Mario’s big screen adventure.

On Tuesday, movie and Mario fans alike got a new sneak peek at the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” with a new trailer.

It starts off with Mario walking out of a dark tunnel into a coliseum of fans chanting his name. From there, he is standing on a beam preparing for a fight against Donkey Kong. This is just the first of many first appearances for iconic Super Mario characters within the trailer. Mario (Chris Pratt), utters his famous “Lets’-a-go” charging at DK… but to no luck. Donkey Kong

Next, we see a montage of Bowser and his minions in his territory holding Luigi, who Charlie Day voices, cap tive. The Jack Black voiced monster explains that he is looking for a human that looks an awful lot like Luigi. It cuts to a short sizzle of the Super Mario Bros. working together as plumbers, before Bowser rips off part of Luigi’s mustache.

Luigi is theorized to be the dam sel in distress in this movie, as Princess Peach, (Anya Taylor-Joy) wastes no time in preparing for Bowser’s arrival to the Mushroom Kingdom. Dressed in what appears to be her bike outfit from “Ma rio Kart Wii”, she walks head first into the danger of Bowser’s flying airship.

After this, we see a training montage packed full of classic Super Mario references. Mario is seen practic ing on a course of sorts, trying to dodge swinging fire bars, getting slammed by bullet bills, and even falling off of a platform. This section just oozes the

classic 2D Mario experience, and it will be interesting to see how these plat forming sections tie into the film.

We then get what appears to be a traveling montage, displaying some beautiful shots of classic Super Mario locals and items. Mario is seen soaring in with his Tanooki Suit from “Super Mario Bros. 3” in one shot, Princess Peach arms herself with a fire flower, and even a group of Yoshis are seen running past a river in a scene. There are so many locals and references to be seen for long time lovers of the Super Mario Brothers franchise.

Lastly, the biggest surprise of the trailer. Mario’s foot is seen slamming down the pedal of a kart. As he’s flying through the air, the iconic red M placed on the front of a go-kart is there for all to see. Of course, this is a reference to the Mario Kart series of games. “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” is the best-selling game for Nintendo’s console, the Nintendo Switch, so its inclusion, while surpris ing at first glance, makes a great deal of sense to throw into the mix. The kart

lands on a track, being rainbow road, as drivers like Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong are seen riding behind Mario. One character that “Mario Kart Wii” fans will be happy to see is the return of fan favorite Funky Kong. Wearing his classic shades and bandana, he is seen cruising down Rainbow Road with the rest of the crew. Clearly, Nintendo and Illumination are attempting to throw in as many references as possible. The trailers end with a Super Mario “Wahoo” and the release month of the movie.

Overall, it was a much more excit ing trailer than the first. The first look at the movie felt a bit like an appetizer, but the newest trailer was the entire Thanksgiving dinner. With plenty of action sequences, cheeky references, and a bit of light humor sprinkled in here and there, the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” has fans eagerly awaiting its April 7 release date.
