Not only are there career fairs, orientations and student celebrations during welcome week, but one of the biggest online trends is happening on campus right now. Sorority recruitment is one of the main events at Oklahoma State during welcome week, getting students who are involved excited to come back to school and kick off theTikTok’syear. top trending topic this past week has been #bamarush, Panhellenic formal recruitment at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa. This recruitment process has begun to take over campuses across the country, including OSU. From the outfit of the day to door songs, recruitment is an exciting time in the Greek community. The OSU Greek community comprises of over 50 chapters, offering students the opportunity to participate in brother/sisterhood, academic excellence, leadership, community service and social events. Panhellenic Council has 13 active chapters on campus that incoming freshman women participate in formal recruitment to join. Not a lot of people know about the inner workings of this big week

Three boys crowd together on a small brown couch, their fingers clacking buttons on Xbox controllers. Several feet to their left, Luke Finn stares at a monitor with a headset and trash talks his friends while he blasts opponents on Call of Duty. Behind the group, six beds separated by a few feet are split into rows of three. The clutter crowds the sixthfloor lounge of Wentz Hall at Oklahoma State University. This isn’t a normal setup. Beds aren’t supposed to be in lounges. Each student should live in a traditional room with one roommate. Not now. Full capacity in the traditional-style dorms, caused by a record freshmen class of 4,270 and a large number of returning residents forced OSU’s Housing and Residential Life department to find alternative methods. Classes begin Monday and dozens of students will temporarily live with unusual accommodations.LeonMcClinton, OSU’s director of Housing and Residential Life, led his staff and residents through the pandemic with limited issues. Now, he will lead roughly 6,000 residents through a period of no vacancy. Sam Walker, one of Finn’s five roommates, lies in his bed and speaks with positivity.“Ijust got an email that said, ‘Congratulations, you’ve been assigned to lounge 6C from Oklahoma State,” Walker, a sophomore economics major, said. Confusion filled his mind. Soon, relief. “I honestly view it as a good thing because I knew I was gonna live here but I thought it was going to be in the regular rooms,” Walker said. “When I had the email and they decided to combine rooms, I thought it was a really good idea.” His other roommates happened to be his pledge brothers from Sigma Nu. He won’t room with strangers. Instead, his Against“brothers.”theopposite wall, dozens of shirts hang on several rolling racks like a clearance section at the back of a retail store. A half-eaten bag of Doritos sits next to the TV. Blue LED lights outline posters and flags featuring Ronald Reagan and Will Ferrell. This is their home. For now. Many factors contributed to this shortage. In the three traditional style halls — Iba, Stout and Wentz Hall — each floor features a combination of a typical two-person room and a private room. Not everyone lives with a roommate. That is changing, thanks to the record numbers.McClinton and his staff aren’t kicking any one out. All students who applied for housing will get a bed in a temporary housing assignment.Three options exist for the students unlucky enough to be caught in the overflow. Finn and Walker’s crew settled in the floor lounges. Several roommates with little privacy. Every student in the traditional halls uses a community style bathroom so that privacy is already scarce. The other temporary assignments are dependent on a resident.“Some students signed up for a private room and these rooms are designed to accommodate two people,” McClinton said. “We have notified these students that were supposed to have private rooms that we’re moving somebody else in there and help them understand that we live by the Cowboy Code, and we hope that they will welcome this resident in their room.”Community mentors, OSU’s version of a resident assistant, generally live without a roommate. Now, they will receive a weekly $100 stipend if they let a resident stay in their room. The students hosting someone in the private rooms will also be compensated, McClinton said. “Students that are placed in the lounges are going to get their first month rent free,” McClinton said. “The students that have private rooms will also get their first month free.” OSU isn’t the only campus with housing shortages. Many universities nationwide are experiencing similar issues and seeking solutions.According to The Salt Lake Tribune, the University of Utah is paying alumni $5,000 to host a student because of its waiting list of nearly 3,500 students. According to USA Today, students at large universities in major urban areas like California are looking at four digit monthly rental rates off-campus. While rent in Stillwater is much cheaper, Realpage reported that the price of off-campus student housing increase by 6% nationwide.McClinton said no one is on the waitlist at OSU. “We’re pretty much at a point where we’re still getting interest and requests, but we pretty much said, ‘We can’t take anyone else,’” he PNM’s

Many people may plan to give when they receive a great amount of money, but that large amount of money may never come. We may plan to give time or talent to a project when we have more time, but that perfect time arrangement may never happen. Again, the apostle Paul encourages us “as you have opportunity, do good to all men.” We never know when a little gesture of kindness, with money, or helping in an area of service, spending a little time with a person, a word of encouragement, will be just the action that will be a great help to someone. These can be practical ways of living out the Lord’s challenge to love one another. The woman, who poured the precious ointment on Jesus just before he was crucified, was criticized for “wasting” this expensive item. Yet, Jesus said everywhere the gospel is preached this woman’s action would be told. (Mk 14:3-9) Little things mean a lot as we are willing to serve the Lord. Paul mentions many in Romans 16 who helped him. The Good Samaritan stopped to help the man beaten and robbed. (Lu.10:30-37) Paul writes as you have opportunity, do good to all men, especially to other believers.(Gal.6:10) When the poor widow dropped the two pennies, all that she had, into the temple offering. Jesus said she gave more the large offerings given. Her “large giving” was in relation to what she had. (Mk.12:41-44) There is a short chorus that has encouraged me many times. “Little is much if God is in it. Labor not for wealth or fame. There’s a crown and you can win it. If you go in Jesus’ name.”

The record freshman class that features 4,270 new residents largely contributed to full capacity. A returning group of 1,250 students, which is a 40% increase from last year’s number, adds to the madness. “We’ll receive cancelations up until the first few weeks of the semester,” McClinton said. “That just happens every year. People will decide not to come. As we get those cancelations, we’ll move these students that in temporary assignments to permanent spaces as we get into the year.” Sigma Nu pledges, like Finn and Walker, returned because their house is under construction.“Iwaskinda bummed at the beginning because it kinda stinks being stuck in Wentz,” Finn said. “Not the ideal situation. We got here and I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I was going to.” Both received the email and immediately combined their decorations and TVs to create a frat-like aesthetic. “We can set it up however we want to,” Finn said. “We’re all cool with sleeping in the same room. We just hang out all the time.”NBA jerseys hung on hangers dangle from the ceiling. A male college student’s version of chandeliers. The boys aren’t sure how long they will stay in the lounge. Neither is McClinton. It’s dependent on the number of students that drop their reservation or leave in between semesters. But for now, students must adapt. Just like they’ve done the past few years. In between classes, Finn will cherish his time with his friends and bond through video games such as NBA2K and Call of Duty.“I could beat all the dudes in this room, too,” he said. “That’s a fact.”

You’re going to be living in your respective hall with the same people for a year, it makes things a lot easier when you have people next door to talk to and leads to a much more comfortable living environment.”- Madilyn Wilson, a junior in animal science with a pre-vet“Asoptionsomeone who just finished going through all of the mess and excitement of freshman year is to step out of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to do anything alone either. Whether that is going to a sporting event, or an event on campus, or joining a club, just do it. Don’t be afraid to talk to your professors or the kid that sits next to you in class either. You don’t want to look back and regret an opportunity you didn’t take.”- Cheyenne Hampton, a sophomore in hospitality and tourism management“Prepare to have a lot of negative emotions along with positive ones. Being independent for roughly the first time, having responsibilitymoreand having more free time means having more failure than success at first. Look for healthy ways to vent out negative emotions. OSU is great because they offer free counseling and hotline for mental health.”- Oklahoma State alumna“Remember that you are paying to be here and as such you should get your money’s worth. That is to go tutoring if you don’t understand something and meet your advisor and professors when you need help. This is an investment that cost thousands of dollars, make sure that every penny spent is well spent.”- Thérèse Madeleine Tankam, a junior in biochemistry As a new semester is rapidly approaching, the Cowboy family past and present welcomes in the class of 2026 into the ever growing community at Oklahoma

so here’s a crash course. Women who want to participate in panhellenic recruitment go through various rounds of meeting and learning about the different chapters. The women and chapters share a mutual process of elimination to narrow down houses and end up with one at the end of the week. “A sorority prides itself on wellchosen members,” Morgan Patterson, director of academics for Alpha Omicron Pi said. “Recruitment goes beyond the immediate effects of Bid Day. We’re looking at the long-term sisterhood that will continue for the next year, five years or ten years.” Within these rounds, sorority chapters on campus focus on different things, like their philanthropies, sisterhood and helping these women find a home for the next four years. Each house has a local and national philanthropy that they work to support and provide hands-on volunteer work for various organizations. Wings of Hope, Saville Center for Child Advocacy and the Stillwater Humane Society are examples of local philanthropies.Greeklife has brought publicity, community service and leadership to our campus. The process of recruitment has been a back-to-school event for many years now. Finding your forever sisterhood can be a challenging but rewarding process. Greek life and recruitment can have different meanings to different people including Patterson. “My own recruitment experience was at the beginning of the pandemic, it was all on Zoom,” Patterson said. “When I made it to the final day and I was down to two houses, I didn’t get to fully experience the sweet ceremonies that occurred. That made my decision all that more difficult. When I started recruiting for my own sorority, in person, I was able to experience those ceremonies right next to the potential new members. I was able to feel the same things they were feeling. I felt more validated with my choice, and it really solidified that despite not having that experience in the moment, this was where I needed to end up.”

No. 3 “Nope” “Nope” is the third horror/ thriller film from multifaceted director Jordan Peele, and the expectations were high from the moment the first trailer was released. Peele’s latest film may not necessarily be his best work narratively, but there is no denying that it is an absolute spectacle to watch. The production value throughout the film is top-notch. From the cinematography, effects and the musical score, “Nope” takes you on an entertaining and thrilling journey. By the time the credits were rolling, I found “Nope” to be one of the best extraterrestrial films I have seen. Of all of Jordan Peele’s films, this is without a doubt the most rewatchable as well and I actually enjoyed myself even more the second time around. No. 2 “Elvis” This biopic of “The King of Rock and Roll,” takes notes from previous biopics, such as “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and shakes it up. “Elvis” is injected with the style and energy you would expect from a movie chronicling the glorious rise and tragic fall of one of the most influential and transcendent musicians ever. “Elvis” has a lot of great things going for it; the editing, acting and, obviously, the music. The real separating factor is Austin Butler, portraying Elvis Presley. Butler delivers a performance that can be described as nothing short of incredible with his acting range being put on full display due to his near-identical charm and charisma to “The King.” Boasting one of my favorite performances I have seen, “Elvis” is a film every fan of the performer should witness. For those who are not fans, I think the movie could change that. No. 1 “Top Gun: Maverick” I do not think it is a reach to say that unless you lived under a rock all summer, you have heard of “Top Gun: Maverick” and its success. Continuing to rise in the box office, “Top Gun: Maverick” has etched itself into history as one of the most popular films of recent history. Accomplishing one of cinema’s most difficult feats, “Top Gun: Maverick” delivers a sequel that surpasses its predecessor in every way possible while doing it in tremendous Tom Cruise style. With amazing action, drama, character moments, and direction, “Top Gun: Maverick” easily takes the top spot for the best movie of summer 2022, and has the potential to be the best film of the year.
Cinema fans have been treated to several great films so far in 2022, and the summer blockbuster season did not fail to continue to success. Whether moviegoers were searching for an action-packed adventure, horror and thrills, superheroes, or family films, there were plenty of new releases to choose from this summer. While some fell flat, others excelled past my expectations leading them to be my favorite films of the summer.

Students are returning to classes, and what better way to bring in the new school year than with a new wardrobe. Whether you prefer a more casual style or more classic pieces, here is a list of five back-to-school clothing items everyone needs. No. 5: New sneakers No matter the occasion, every student needs a classic sneaker. From walking to class to going out, a pair of good sneakers are one of the most versatile pieces a student can own. If you’re looking for a great basic pair, Nike Air Force One’s are a great pick. If being basic isn’t your thing, Veja is a great option and they have every color you could ever want. No. 4: Outdoor coat Winter in Oklahoma can be brutal, so having a good coat to protect yourself from the elements is important. While it is important to have a coat that is warm, that doesn’t mean they don’t have to be fashion forward. Bomber jackets are a solid option for anyone looking for a more elevated outdoor coat, with places like Gap or Abercrombie and Fitch offering some solid options. However, if you want to impress your friends a top coat is a great alternative to the traditional outdoor wear. Places like Banana Republic and Zara have great options when it comes to top coats, and you’ll be sure to impress your peers. No. 3: A watch Classes are busy, and it can be easy to let the time slip by. To combat this, it is important to make sure you have a good watch to get to places on time. If you’re looking for a solid option, an Apple Watch is always great for students. If traditional watches are your thing, Fossil has been making watches for years, and with the 50% off sale happening now, you can’t go wrong. No. 2: Denim Offering such versatility, jeans are a college-student essential that everyone needs. Whether you prefer a loose fit or a more slim leg, places like Abercrombie and Fitch and Gap offer a fit and wash suitable for everyone. No. 1: apparelSchool No matter what college you go to, repping the school’s colors are a great way to show your involvement in the university. At OSU, the University Store is a great place to stock up on everything you’ll need for the upcoming semester. But, there are local boutiques around Stillwater that offer a wide range of OSU merchandise perfect for any sporting event.College is a time to express yourself, and what better way to show your personal style than by getting some essential fashion pieces that are a bit more elevated. Even though it is great to have some of these essentials in your closet, it is important to wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident. Courtesy of GAP Every student needs a good coat, and opting for a more sophisticated style can help elevate your wardrobe.

Peyton Vincze returns to the pitch at Neal Patterson Stadium for the first time in two years after tearing both of her ACL’s, eager to compete for a Big 12 title. After a pair of ACL tears, Vincze is glad to ‘have a whole season to look forward to’ Slouching casually, hunched in front of cameras, audio recorders and reporters, just 20 yards away from the exact spot where OSU’s College Football Playoff hopes collapsed with one tackle, the spotlight beamed its pressure on Spencer Sanders’Theeyes.last time Sanders entered the billion dollar confines of AT&T Stadium he threw four interceptions to the Baylor defense in the Big 12 championship game in December, and despite a late game surge, the Sanders- led Cowboys had to settle for second place in the“Iconference.didn’thave the best game that game and there were a lot of guys that told me, ‘You know, it’s not your fault,’ which obviously I’m gonna blame myself, you can’t have four turnovers in one game and expect your team to win,” Sanders said. “So you know, I was pretty down on myself.”
As Grace Yochum strolled off the field at Swope Park in Kansas City, Missouri, one thing came toWhethermind: or not she had just played the last collegiate game of her tenure at OSU. OSU, already on the brink of the NCAA tournament, lost to Texas Tech in a pivotal match for its chances of reaching the postseason. The Cowgirls were on board with the reality that they wouldn’t be playing again until the next year, and Yochum didn’t know if she would play another collegiate match.“I thought about it a lot, especially in that moment after (the loss to Texas Tech),” Yochum said. “I wondered if I (had just played) the last college match of my career. I wondered if it was the last time I played under coach (Carmichael), if it was the last time I played with (Oklahoma State).
Eight months later at Big 12 Media Days in July, the lights didn’t bother him — a mindset he’s carrying into his senior year this fall. “You can carry a chip on your shoulder for motivation, but you can’t hold yourself and have regrets,” Sanders said. “You just gotta let it go and move on.” So he got to work. In prior seasons, Sanders’ expressions rarely echoed throughout the OSU locker room or in the minds of his teammates, but this year, surrounded by offensive players younger than him at every position, he let his voice crescendo and resonate.Building a connection with younger weapons on offense became easier than he thought. All Sanders had to do was show more trust in his younger, wetogether.we’veLasttrustingJadenrisinggotourwhengamesmeplaycreatedfoundationteammates,underconfidentbuildupontheofpreviouslyrelationshipsandfootball.“(Sanders)trustedinoneofthebiggestoftheseason,andImadethoseplaystrustandconnectionevenbetter,”saidsophomorereceiverBray.“Himmemeansalot.springandthisfallbeenworkingalotThemorerepsgettogether,thebetter for the both of us.” While he thought about how he plays football, going into his fourth year as a starting quarterback, something very few across the country get a chance at, Sanders decided to enjoy himself, and play loose. With half a decade of experience as part of a college football program, Sanders has had plenty of time to hit the book, culminating to a point where he knows coach Mike Gundy’s offense as well as“Spenceranybody.has been fantastic for us,” Gundy said. “He has now become a magician in our offense. He knows it. He can run it fast.”Knowing the playbook cover-to-cover could only get him so far, so Sanders fixed his throwing mechanics Bus bonding Cowgirls looking forward to the road trip to Omaha

Coach Colin Carmichael stood along the same sideline as Vincze for those nearly two years, waiting for the day of her return. “I’m gonna be so happy when she runs out,” Carmichael said, two days before the exhibition. “She’ll be the happiest, I might be second.”On Sept. 25, 2020, during a match against West Virginia, Vincze was helped off the field and in visible pain from her right knee. Later, the fears were confirmed. Just three matches into the season, she was done for the year. Not only that, but the recovery carried over into the 2021 season. Two seasons, gone. “I tell her all the time, she’s a much tougher kid than I ever was, because I could not go through the two years that she has and still come back,” Carmichael said. The injury came just as Vincze recovered from a previous ACL tear that ended her freshman season less than two weeks before it began. The first of August marks that college soccer teams are allowed to practice as a team. On the 18th, OSU soccer plays the first of its regular season games. The team only practiced with one another for 17 days before the season kicks off. The jump from summer workouts, to fall practice, then immediately into the season can be a lot to process for an athlete. Great plays takes time, and unfortunately for college soccer players, time is not an overabundant resource. Fifthyear midfielder, Grace Yochum, highlighted how the start date can affect the quality of soccer on the“Itfield.makes everything a lot harder,” Yochum said. “Softball, baseball and even football, a fall sport, have time to get ready and prepare. They have their final product. We won’t even have our final product in our first regular season game, which isn’t good.” Yochum talked about how injuries can be much more prevalent when those that are adjusting to competing at a higher level take the field. “Injuries happen,” Yochum said. “You know everyone’s just mentally drained by the end of preseason, but now you got to get into the season. It’s not the best in terms of our health, but at the end of the day if you want to play soccer, you got to do that.”Itwould be easy to let the stresses of preseason practices bog down team chemistry. Athletes looking to find their role on the team, work their way up the depth chart and prove themselves to the team. Competitiveness is at an alltime high on the field. This Cowgirl squad has not let the aura of competition get to them. Instead, the players have used this time together as a way to build their trust and teamwork with one another. Junior forward, Peyton Vincze, discussed how this team has grown in chemistry despite the short window from intrasquad to regular“We’veseasonobviously had a lot of practices just because it is preseason, so I think that’s helped just having all that time together,” Vincze said. “We also have been doing a lot of team activities outside of practice, which has helped our team together and have good chemistry. I think that we’ll have a great season just because we’re all close off the field and on the field.”Mackenzie Janish With only 17 days to train for the regular season, OSU soccer is on a tight schedule before the first game.

I wondered a lot of things.”Ten months later, Yochum is back in an orange and black uniform, ready to play another season at Neal Patterson Stadium. It wasn’t an easy decision to make, and if she were to come back for a fifth season, she wanted it to mean Assomething.timeprogressed after OSU’s elimination, the senior midfielder continued to reflect on her career and what one more potential season would mean. The conversations between OSU’s star player and coach Colin Carmichael were deep, meaningful and to the point.Yochum had two options: Try to pursue a professional soccer career, or return to Stillwater. If Yochum were to go pro, she would have left dissatisfied, ending her college soccer career with a loss. “I’m thinking, I don’t want to go out on a low note, I want to go out on a high note,” YochumTheresaid.were a lot of other positives that weighed on Yochum’s shoulders as she contemplated a potential return. The glaring one being three goals shy of the programs’ all-time leading scorer.“I remember talking to a lot of older girls, girls who have moved on,” Yochum said. “Every time I asked them, they said to stay. (They said), ‘You’re gonna miss this, do it as long as you can, it’s the time of your life, don’t move on, and if you have the ability to stay, stay.’ So I’m like, why would I not stay?” After countless nights of long drawn-out contemplation, it finally clicked. Some time in late November 2021, about a month after the conclusion of her senior season, Yochum informed Carmichael that she would be returning to OSU and planned on making use of her extra year of eligibility. “I was happy obviously that she was returning but I was just there to support whatever Grace wanted to do, to be honest,” Carmichael said. “She’s a woman, making decisions for the rest of her life now.”With the 2022 season underway, Yochum is focused on achieving what she was unable to before — winning a Big 12 conference championship.Whilethe scenic view of Stillwater, the fresh smell of the grass at Neal Patterson Stadium and even the title of OSU’s all-time scorer means a lot to the fifth-year senior, nothing would mean more to her than going out on a high note. “I just want to leave this program better than when I came into it,” Yochum said. “My sophomore year we obviously won the Big 12, and that was great. Ever since then we’ve been trying to climb back up to the top. Slowly and surely we’ve been getting there. I think that this team has a lot of potential. I think we have the ability to win the Big 12 if we all stick together. So personally, I want to leave this program with a Big 12 title. That’s my goal.” sports.ed@ocolly.com and Alex Morris, understand the importance of building team chemistry off the field. In Breiner’s case, her freshman year was under some abnormal circumstances, as COVID-19 limited teammate interactions. This caused players in the same position groups or inner circles to be restricted to one another, negating any hope of full team bonding moments. Because of this, Breiner knows how a road trip like this can benefit the team. “It definitely helps... I know my freshman year with COVID and everything we had to be separated,” Breiner said. With COVID-19 affecting collegiate sports less and less, the Cowgirls are being assigned roommates randomly on trips, giving players an opportunity for rather unlikely interactions to be had and potential new bonds to be timeteamWhetherfortogetherwhatever,oronwiththose“WheneveroffforcohesioncanconnectionsbuildoutlookMorriscreated.hasasimilaronhowtravelingcanteamchemistry,asthosemadeoffthefieldhelpfacilitateimprovedonthefield.“It’sreallyimportant,onthefield,togrowthatthefield,”Morrissaid.you’rearoundgirlsandbasicallylivingthemforaweekendandthebusforhoursandhoursontheairportwiththemoryoujustgetcloser.”TheCowgirlswillbeinanewenvironmentthefirsttimeinweeks.itbethebusride,dinners,orjustspendingintherooms,Carmichael is excited for a change of scenery.“They’ve been working their socks off for the last couple of weeks here in Stillwater and it’d be kinda nice (for) just a little change of scenery, the hotel, getting on the bus with the players... I don’t think that’s a bad thing,” Carmichael said. OSU kicks off its regular season against Omaha on Thursday, hoping to extend its all-time record against the Mavericks to 3-0. “Now it’s just time to maybe get out of this environment for a few days and just focus in on a game,” Carmichael said. from 1B

That wasn’t the case. Vincze chose to see the positives in the situation. Been there, done “Obviouslythat. it was bad because I had already gone through it, but it also helped me because I knew what to expect,” Vincze said. “I just kept telling myself that I would get through it and eventually be back out on the field.”That mindset is what earned the respect of her coaches and teammates. On a quest to find the best football video gamer on the OSU football team, it’s obvious who’s the best. “I am the best, Brennan Presley is the best,” said OSU wide receiver Brennan Presley. While surveying at OSU’s media day, most players said they were the best Madden player on the team. “You know what I’m going to say, I’m going to say it’s me everytime,” said safety Jason Taylor II. Taylor II might be right, considering he got the most votes by his teammates for best Madden player. But through the process, trash talk and cheating allegations were especiallyprevalent, against OSU cornerback, Korie Black.“Korie Black got me, but he don’t play the game right,” Taylor said. “All he does is wildcat with Derrick Henry, he don’t play the game for real.” “All Korie Black does is spam Derrick Henry,” Presley said. “He doesn’t know how to play the game. Gundy said. “Now we have more depth at wide out than we’ve had, (and that) helps us.” Health at the quarterback position has been a slight obstacle for the Cowboys over recentSenioryears.quarterback Spencer Sanders has missed at least one game due to health concerns in all three seasons he has been the team’s starter. While last season may have only been one game, it’s no secret that the fifth-year quarterback has dealt with some injuries in the past. Gundy hasn’t been coy regarding the inexperience outside of Sanders within the quarterback room. A true freshman and two former walk-ons make up the core, making the need to prevent any major injuries even more of a necessity. “We’re always worried about quarterback depth,” Gundy said during spring camp. “We’ve been fortunate in the past that we’ve gotten to our second team quarterback and even our teamthird quarterback and they have played pretty Behindwell.” Sanders, sophomore quarterback, and walk-on, Gunnar Gundy, is expected to take the role of backup quarterback this season following an impressive summer and fall camp. Former four-star recruit and true freshman, Garrett Rangel, is also competing for the backup job following a highly touted high school football “I think we’re all coming together as a room,” Sanders said. “I’m impressed with the young guys and what they’re doing. They’ve really grown a lot during camp and regardless of the depth chart I think we’re going to be really scary on offense, and it starts with the quarterbacks.” Allen Staff Reporter sports.ed@ocolly.com
Abby Cage Bryson Green and Jaden Bray on the field against Tulsa. Wide receiver is a position coach Mike Gundy and his staff haven’t been concerned about heading into the season. With the departure of star receiver Tay Martin to the NFL, the Cowboy receiving core will not only be looking for its next dynamic playmaker and go-to target, but its next leader on the field as well. Gundy and his staff believe in a handful of players to take that next step and lead the receiving room, especially in the seasons’ early stages. “We’ve got the (wide receivers) to do it,” offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn said. “We’ve got the depth at (wide receiver) to do it, there’s no doubt in my mind.”Sophomore receiver Jaden Bray was thrown into the limelight at an early stage of the 2021 season. A handful of crucial early season injuries contributed to Bray’s early load of playing time. The coaching staff followed his true freshman season due to his size, speed and high caliber ability to corral fifty-fifty passes. “Being as young as we were and getting thrown into the fire, we had to learn quickly,” Bray said. “It obviously didn’t feel good in that moment being out there, but it obviously helped us in the long run and getting adjusted and preparing us to be in a position, in the future.”Outside of the starting core, depth is something Gundy has consistently highlighted throughout fall camp. Like Bray sophomore receiver John Paul Richardson is another who got thrown into action early due to the early injuries OSU’s receivers suffered last season. He, along with others, believes last year’s early experience prepared him to have a breakout year this coming season. “Offensively we are who we are,”

for me a 99, come on now,” Wilson said. “What do you want me to say, you want me to give myself a bad rating?”One concern for the players is EA copying the same graph ics and play style from Madden to the NCAA games, something many people, not just the players, don’t want to see. “You can’t mix the two, they’ve always been separate and they’ve always been good sepa rate,” Wilson said. “Honestly, it’s a good marketing strategy for EA Sports because then people are buying both games that are very similar. If they are very different from each other then people will buy both.”

In Saturday’s exhibition against UCO, three freshmen made their first career starts. Bindbeutel and Pineda played alongside star forward Grace Yochum in the attacking unit, and Nytes began the match in goal. The result? The young forwards had strong career debuts, with Bindbeutel recording four shots and Pineda recording two. Both players nabbed one shot on goal. Nytes managed four saves in the first half before subbing out, contributing to a 3-0 shutout to unofficially open the Cowgirls’ season. “With young players, the potential is there to be very inconsistent,” Carmichael said. “But if they start clicking, and the older players play the way they can play, the ceiling for this group is really high. It’s just a matter of how quickly we can getAsthere.”theCowgirls head to Omaha before their home opener on Aug. 21, spirits are high among staff and players alike for what the season can bring.“I think this is the best freshman group we’ve had,” Mollie Breiner said. “They all compete. The new campaign has begun for the OSU women’s soccer team, and following the exit of key players such as Gabriella Coleman and Charmé Morgan, a wealth of incoming talent from the freshman class has earned high praise both on the pitch and in training. “I’m honestly excited about all of them,” Alex Morris, junior wingback said. “I think it’s one of the strongest freshman groups I’ve ever seen. Every single one of them shows up and works every single day.” Of the seven freshmen making up the recruiting class of 2022, four were ranked in the top 100 recruits for their position per Top Drawer Soccer, with freshman goalkeeper, Jordan Nytes, ranked as high as 15th nationally Xcaret Pineda a midfielder who won the ECNL National Championship in 2021, ranked No. 5 in the Midwest region and 30th nationally.Further highlighting the level of performance the class brings to the dressing room Nytes, along with fellow newcomers Sami Allen (Forward) and Gracie Bindbeutel (Forward/Midfield) all were additionally selected as Gatorade Players of the Year. “Sometimes in a class, you’ve got two or three that hit the ground running, and two or three that maybe need a couple of years to develop physically or mature a bit,” said OSU coach Colin Carmichael source said. “Every single one of these kids has done well.”
