Enter redshirt sophomore Hunter Dekkers, who was Purdy’s backup the last two seasons. Although Dekkers experience is limited, he still receives high praise and faith from Campbell. “Myself, our program, Iowa State fast facts our players have complete faith in All-time record vs OSU: 20-33-3 our quarterback room, and Head coach: Matt Campbell (Seventh season at ISU) especially a guy like Hunter 2022 Preseason All-Big 12 selections: because of how he practiced Jared Rus (Fullback) every day, and Xavier Hutchinson (Wide receiver) when he got the Trevor Downing (Offensive lineman) moments to get Will McDonald IV (Defensive lineman) in the game and perform, he was Notable Cyclones in the NFL: able to perform at David Montgomery (Running back; Chicago Bears) a really high rate,” Campbell said. Running back Jirehl Brock backed up Hall for two years while fullback converted tight end Jared Rus was named a FirstTeam All-Big 12 selection last season. The Cyclones also have stars returning this season, all who could’ve left for the NFL, but decided to come back. Offensive lineman Trevor Downing, wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson and defensive end Will McDonald IV decided to come back this season and were all tabbed to the Preseason All-Big 12 team in the process. Iowa State had zero coaching changes this offseason, so for a roster that’s on a “next man up,” mentality, keeping the same scheme will help Iowa State continue to have success, even if the team has little expectations. “Part of our job is to develop,” Campbell said. “I think one thing that we believe is to recruit, retain and develop. I think what we’ve tried to do is put our best players in position to help us have success and win football games.”

Pelosi, an outspoken critic of Beijing, is the highest-ranking elected U.S. official to visit Taiwan in 25 years. Even before her arrival during an official tour of Asia, the prospect of a stop in Taiwan drew the ire of Beijing, which sees the trip as a challenge to its claim of sovereignty over the self-governed island. “Our delegation’s visit to Taiwan honors America’s unwavering commitment to supporting Taiwan’s vibrant Democracy,” Pelosi tweeted within minutes of touching down at the airport in Taipei. WHEN IS LITTLE MUCH?
There is a short chorus that has encouraged me many times. “Little is much if God is in it. Labor not for wealth or fame. There’s a crown and you can win it. If you go in Jesus’ name.” The woman, who poured the precious ointment on Jesus just before he was crucified, was criticized for “wasting” this expensive item. Yet, Jesus said everywhere the gospel is preached this woman’s action would be told. (Mk 14:3-9) Little things mean a lot as we are willing to serve the Lord. Paul mentions many in Romans 16 who helped him. The Good Samaritan stopped to help the man beaten and robbed. (Lu.10:30-37) Paul writes as you have opportunity, do good to all men, especially to other believers.(Gal.6:10) When the poor widow dropped the two pennies, all that she had, into the temple offering. Jesus said she gave more the large offerings given. Her “large giving” was in relation to what she had. (Mk.12:41-44)
Many people may plan to give when they receive a great amount of money, but that large amount of money may never come. We may plan to give time or talent to a project when we have more time, but that perfect time arrangement may never happen. Again, the apostle Paul encourages us “as you have opportunity, do good to all men.” We never know when a little gesture of kindness, with money, or helping in an area of service, spending a little time with a person, a word of encouragement, will be just the action that will be a great help to someone. These can be practical ways of living out the Lord’s challenge to love one another. This is the fulfilling of the many commandments in the Bible: loving people by word and action.

Courtesy of Tribune News Service Bad Bunny, left, and Brad Pitt star in “Bullet Train.”
‘Bullet Train’ review: Murder on the disorient express stars Brad Pitt in a pack of assassins on a train out of Tokyo Michael Phillips Chicago Tribune
In “Bullet Train,” Brad Pitt plays a lovable-loser assassin (code name: Ladybug) bent on self-improvement. He’s an easygoing sweetie, in the spirit of John Cusack’s gun-for-hire in “Grosse Pointe Blank,” to name one film you may wish you were rewatching instead of watching this one. This one’s well made in its chosen attack. It’s fun for a while. And then, not so much. I say this realizing “Bullet Train” may well be exactly what millions of summer ‘22 action fans are after: ultraviolence without weight, and with a wink, though there’s an occasional stab at human feeling in its interrelated stories of competing assassins after a precious suitcase on a superfast train from Tokyo to Kyoto. The movie’s overture misleads the audience into expecting a somber underworld crime drama. A preteen boy, grievously injured in a plunge off a rooftop, lies in a hospital bed. Who threw him to his near-death? The boy’s father (Andrew Koji) gets a lecture
from his gang lord father, The Elder (Hiroyuki Sanada), about his failure to protect his family. The Elder is fighting for criminal dominance, we soon learn, with a Russian interloper, White Death (Michael Shannon, wittily vicious). His delayed entrance signals the mayhem of the movie’s last section. En route, “Bullet Train” plays around with flashbacks and visual footnotes, in the style of Guy Ritchie’s British crime sprees or Quentin Tarantino’s odes to exploitation films past. On board the train, bickering twin London assassins in tweed overcoats (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry) carry the code names Tangerine and Lemon, and debate the implications of Lemon’s lifelong devotion to Thomas the Tank Engine. A shifty young woman dressed in Japanese schoolgirl garb (Joey King) changes personalities and alliances like the wind. A knife-wielding, vengeance-seeking Mexican drug cartel heir known as Wolf (Puerto Rican rapper-turned-actor Bad Bunny) has come to Japan to kill the man, or woman, who executed an entire wedding party. Scenes from that misfortune pepper the flashbacks, for laughs, in a festival of projectile blood
vomit soaring in slow motion. Through it all the Pitt character is just trying to get the right suitcase and get off at Kyoto in one piece. With the voice (Sandra Bullock’s) of his supercool handler murmuring in his ear, Ladybug soon realizes the extend of his competition on board. They’re there for interrelated reasons. Their connections from prior engagements — the cartel wedding job; a 17-corpse melee in Johannesburg, scored to “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles” — are revealed over the course of two hours of peppy carnage, numbing glibness and the occasional payoff. An adaptation of the 2010 Kotaro Isaka novel, one of his popular “Hitmen” series, “Bullet Train” has been cast, deftly, with actors ready to play. Even Pitt, never much in the verbal-facility or quick-time dialogue department, loosens up and finds an effective sweet spot at the intersection of unkillable tough guy and exasperated bad-luck charm. For an Americanized version of Japanese source material (well, internationalized, in terms of casting, but heavy on the Anglos), director David Leitch makes sound business sense behind the camera. He worked on the first “John Wick,” delivered
an enjoyably wiseass “Deadpool” sequel and has proven proficient at both practical stunt work and (per the overscaled ridiculousness of something like “Hobbes & Shaw,” which he also directed) a spit-ton of digital effects. The spirit’s almost there to pull it off. But the movie does grind on. The later stages of “Bullet Train” jumps the rails figuratively and literally; the best bits are content to work through smaller problems either in economy or first-class, wherein no one can fully trust anyone, and there’s a deadly snake loose. That’s right. “Snake on a Train.” Everyone’s going to use that phrase, and I want to be just like everyone else. At one point the childlike assassin Lemon complains about the state of entertainment today: “twists, violence, drama — no message.” He’s talking about the movie he’s in, of course. But that word “drama” doesn’t quite fit, because drama would require different and more interesting rules of engagement. I enjoyed the work of the actors here. Caring about what they’re up to, even in a larky Neverland of hard-R slaughter, is another story. entertainment.ed@ocolly.com

Al-Qaeda leader killed in United States drone strike Mallory Pool Staff Reporter President Joe Biden has confirmed that Al-Qaeda leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was killed in a U.S. drone strike in the Afghan capital Kabul on Sunday. Al-Zawahiri plotted the 9/11 attacks alongside Osama Bin Laden and took over Al-Qaeda after the death of Bin Laden in 2011. The 71-year-old Egyptian doctor was one of America’s most wanted terrorists. Biden said al-Zawahiri had “carved a trail of murder and violence against American citizens” in a live television address from the White House. “Now justice has been delivered and this terrorist leader is no more,” Biden said. Officials said al-Zawahiri was on the balcony of a safe house when the drone fired two missiles at him. The strike was approved by the president after months of planning. Other people, including family members, were present during the attack, but were unharmed. Officials said al-Zawahiri was the only one killed in the attack. A Taliban spokesperson said the U.S. operation was a “clear violation of international principles” but did not mention Zawahiri. U.S. officials have maintained that the operation was on legal basis. Under a Taliban and U.S. peace deal in 2020, Taliban agreed to not allow al-Qaeda or any extremist group to operate in areas that they controlled. However, Taliban and al-Qaeda have been allies for a long time, and officials said the Taliban was aware that alZawahiri was in Kabul and that he was living freely. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that by hosting and sheltering al-Zawahiri in Kabul, the Taliban had “grossly violated” the peace deal. U.S. intelligence officers accused Taliban affiliates of going to the safe house after the strike to try and cover up al-Zawahiri’s presence there. The Taliban said they agreed Afghanistan would never be a base to launch attacks against the United States again, but they said they never agreed to sever all links to groups like al-Qaeda including their ally, al-Zawahiri. news.ed@ocolly.com

Pelosi... Continued from page 2 While the Biden administration is reluctant to look soft on China, it also has little interest in antagonizing the country’s leadership, particularly with war raging between Russia and Ukraine. The U.S. has warned China against providing material support to Russia, and would be hard-pressed to confront challenges from both countries at once. Prior to Pelosi’s trip, Biden said the Pentagon advised against it but was taking steps to ensure her safety. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said the visit did not contravene long-standing U.S. policy and should not be a reason for China to increase military activity. Analysts said that though Beijing is under pressure to follow through with its warnings, it wants to stop short of actions that could draw it into a war with the U.S., which is bound by federal law to ensure that Taiwan can defend itself. Biden has said the U.S. would intervene militarily if China attacked Taiwan, though the administration has walked back those comments. China’s countermeasures, which include missile tests, expanding military exercises and more aggressive air and sea excursions, are a step up from normal military activity around Taiwan and indicate a more provocative stance. More dire possibilities might include a naval blockade directed at the key southwestern port city of Kaohsiung, no-fly zones over the Taiwan Strait and military exercises that cut off Taiwan’s conduit to the outside world. Those scenarios would mark significant escalation and pose grave danger for the Taiwanese military, which would have to respond by scrambling warplanes and naval assets. “The Chinese military will not target the U.S.,” said Yujen Kuo, director of the Institute for National Policy Research at National Sun YatSen University in Taiwan. “China will punish Taiwan.” China also suspended food imports from more than 100 companies in Taiwan, local media here reported Tuesday. China has previously banned Taiwanese products such as pineapple and grouper, seen as an attempt to exert economic pressure on the island. China has long considered

Taiwan part of its territory, though the Communist Party has never ruled the island. After losing the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the Chinese Nationalist Party fled to Taiwan with the goal of one day retaking the country. In 1979, Washington switched diplomatic relations to the Communist Party, and adopted a policy of acknowledging Beijing’s claim over Taiwan without endorsing it. Meanwhile, Taiwan transitioned into democratic rule, and increasingly its citizens view their cultural and political identity as separate from mainland China. As Beijing has ramped up calls for unification and buzzed the island with record numbers of warplanes, the growing tensions have led some officials to warn that an attack is possible in the next few years. Xi, who is expected to break Chinese political norms by securing a third five-year term as president later this year, considers unification with Taiwan of utmost importance

under his broader goal of “national rejuvenation.” The Chinese leader is juggling domestic challenges ahead of the anticipated term extension, including a property crisis and the economic impact of COVID-19 lockdowns. A weak response to Pelosi’s visit could undermine his leadership at a politically sensitive time. How aggressively China chooses to push is entirely up to Xi, Kuo said. But if he “doesn’t react strongly to Pelosi’s visit, he will face tremendous challenges from other factions within the Communist Party.” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has raised awareness of the potential for conflict with mainland China, spurring initiatives to bolster defenses in the Taiwanese military and among civilians. However, many locals are skeptical that Pelosi’s visit will lead to a substantive change in China’s military approach toward Taiwan. Despite pressure from Beijing, many Taiwanese citizens and
lawmakers celebrated Pelosi’s arrival as a sign of U.S. support and international recognition. On Tuesday evening, the Taipei 101 skyscraper was lit with messages of thanks and gratitude to Pelosi and the U.S. While the Chinese Nationalist Party generally favors closer ties with Beijing, the opposition party also said Tuesday it welcomes Pelosi, along with other international visitors that promote liberal democratic values and free trade. “The visit should not be interpreted as a provocation but rather as support for maintaining the cross-strait status quo,” said Wen Lii, director of the Matsu Islands chapter of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party. “I think it’s important for Taiwan to continue to receive public gestures of support from fellow democracies.”
