Winter storm could create hazardous travel in Kansas City Monday and Tuesday Kendrick Calfee The Kansas City Star
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Anyone making commutes Monday morning and evening could run into wintry weather and hazardous road conditions, according to the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch as it monitors a storm system headed for Kansas City early next week. Effects of the storm could make travel difficult, the weather service said, with chances of patchy blowing snow that could reduce visibility. A winter storm watch is in effect from 6 a.m. Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon. According to NWS, it is expected to affect portions of east-central and northeast Kansas, and central, westcentral, north-central, northeast and west-central regions of Missouri. It’s the second and possibly more severe of two winter storm systems that made their way into Kansas City in early January. Early next week there is a chance of heavy snow accumulation with three to six inches possible

It canceled its Monday and Tuesday service between St. Louis and Kansas City, among other lines, for the safety of employees and customers. “The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening com-

The final six episodes finish out a long-reigning Netflix original series. There is a lot packed into the end of the series. The show balances a coming-of-age story on two fronts. Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) settles into her reign’s final years, and William attends university. We start off in the late ‘90s before transitioning to the
early 2000s. The first major plot point we happen across is the father-son relationship between Prince William (Ed McVey) and Prince Charles (Dominic West). It’s a beautiful arc that examines common themes between young sons and their fathers. Prince Phillip (Jonathan Price) talks William into forgiving his father. It’s a great moment where Phillip gets to finally do something for his son who he had been so harsh on growing up. William heads off to college and faces an ever-growing crowd of lovestruck girls, hoping for a glance from the young prince. He hates it but quickly falls for Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy). schemes to ensure the pair follows the same plan in the show by taking a gap year and attending St. Andrews. In real life, there is some merit to the plan, but the best evidence is Middleton’s mother, Carole Middleton (Eve Best), trying to help her win the Prince back after their 2007 breakup. It’s an interesting love story. They don’t start immediately dating, which gives their budding relationship time to grow as the two grow into their adulthood. One of my absolute favorite William moments is when the young Prince puts his own dislike of his role in the monarchy aside for his grandmother and stands by the Queen during her Golden Jubilee. Not many wrestlers could ease into action with smooth sailing after nearly a two-month hiatus due to injury. Daton Fix is another story. The OSU 133-pounder returned from a culmination of what was explained to The O’Colly as a hamstring injury Dec. 19 in a 31-9 road win over Wyoming. The rustiness of an abrupt return to action was on display. He wasn’t as shifty or quick as usual, in spite of an 8-2 win. That wasn’t the case Friday. In a dominant 11-3 major-decision win over fifth-ranked Kai Orine, Fix imposed his will with relative ease. He did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. On Friday, Jamison returned, taking fourth-ranked Ryan Jack to the bout’s final seconds, eventually falling 6-4 on a last-second takedown. And per the ESPNU broadcast crew, Surber was cleared to wrestler, but OSU opted to hold him out, presumably because of the double-digit lead at the time and the opportunity to allow
his pectoral injury to heal further. Both are good news for the Cowboys moving forward, as duals against No. 13 Pittsburgh and No. 17 Oregon State loom. sports Late mistakes compile in OSU’s overtime loss to Baylor in conference opener Braden Bush Sports Editor
With less than 30 seconds left in overtime, OSU had a chance to pull off a start to conference play that seemed unlikely for much of the early season. The Cowboys trailed No. 18 Baylor by a point, but center Brandon Garrison swatted a layup attempt from Langston Love and set up a fast break. He kicked it out to point guard Javon Small, who found Quion Williams inside the arc. Williams tried to kick it across the paint to the 3-point line, but guard Ja’Kobe Walter was waiting and stole the pass. “Q competed his butt off. He made a bad decision in that moment. I think he knows it,” said OSU coach Mike Boynton. “I don’t want him to feel like it’s the end of the world. That one mistake wasn’t the only mistake we made as a team… Just when it happened, it gets kind of magnified.” OSU was forced to foul, and the Bears left Gallagher-Iba Arena with a 75-70 win in overtime on Saturday afternoon. The Cowboys did a lot right to put themselves in position to start conference play with a win, but mistakes late in the game were costly. Baylor (12-2 overall, 1-0 Big 12) entered Saturday as the best 3-point shooting team in the nation, shooting 44.8%. “I don’t think we’re leaving that way,” said Baylor coach Scott Drew. “We couldn’t buy a bucket from 3.” The Cowboys’ game plan was to keep the Bears from hurting them there, and they did that. Baylor shot just 2 for 15 (13.3%) from deep. Boynton said he wanted his team to deny the 3 and force Baylor to find other ways to beat them. The 15 attempts from 3 were the second fewest of the season for the Bears. “Credit Oklahoma State for a really good defense, and then what happens is if you don’t get on a roll, then even if you get a good look, it’s hard to get going,” Drew said. The Cowboys (8-6, 0-1) didn’t shoot particularly well from 3, either. OSU made 4 of 20 from long range and Bryce Thompson went 0 for 6, but the defense kept it in the game. Williams again drew the assignment of covering the top scorer, this time Walter, and he held him to seven points. But in a close game, every play is magnified. On the fast break at the end of the game, Boynton said he would rather have Small with the ball in his hands making the decision or taking the last shot. “It happens fast. He really hasn’t been in that situation. He’ll learn from it,” Boynton said. “…But you live with the

instincts of the kids.” Before that play, though, there were other errors. OSU trailed, 66-65, in overtime when Eric Dailey Jr. brought the ball up for the Cowboys and had the ball stolen by RayJ Dennis at half court and taken for a layup. Even before that, in regulation, Garrison made a jumper to put OSU up, 60-56, with 1:56 left, then troubles hit. Williams fouled Dennis on a 3-pointer on the next possession, which Dennis made and turned into a four-point game and a tied
ballgame. Good execution at times to create a chance to win, then costly errors. “We competed our butts off on the defensive end, so I’m thankful for that, but we’re 0-1,” Boynton said. “And at the end of the day, that’s really the bottom line of it.” Garrison had a career day, scoring 20 points along with eight rebounds and four blocks. Small had another big game with 17 points. Good performances, but at 8-6, there aren’t many moral victories for the
Cowboys. For the team, though, it showed that despite a rough nonconference start and youth, they can compete. Small said it was the best 40 minutes the team has played. “I think people look at us a little differently now that we took them to overtime and really should have finished the game,” Thompson said. “Obviously we didn’t, but going forward for us, that’s a big deal.” Boynton has said multiple times it will take time for the young group to solidify, but
there were signs of it Saturday. Drew even complimented Boynton and the Cowboys for the rebuild with so much youth. The mistakes late in the game were too much to overcome, though. The Cowboys proved they can compete in the Big 12, but some things will still have to be cleaned up. “We’re young, we make some young mistakes at times, but to watch those guys compete the way they did today, it gets me excited,” Boynton said. “I’m ready to go back to practice.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

Payton Little The Cowgirls took advantage of TCU’s lack of size and absence of one of its top players, upsetting the Horned Frogs and improving to 2-1 in conference play.
Cowgirls upset No. 23 TCU on the road Alyssa Brandon Staff Reporter
FORT WORTH, Texas − Before the Cowgirls ever tipped off against TCU, they knew they had a mismatch. The Horned Frogs were without 6-foot-7 center Sedona Prince, who averages more than 21 points and 10.6 rebounds a game, after she suffered a hand injury against Baylor. OSU took advantage of the gamechanging adjustment and pulled off a 67-59 victory against No. 23 TCU at
Schollmaier Arena on Saturday evening. The Cowgirls built as much as a 14-point lead, which helped propel them to 2-1 in the Big 12. As a presence of height was lacking on the Horned Frogs’ side, the Cowgirls (9-5 overall, 2-1 Big 12) took advantage in this aspect as they utilized their own version of a dominant lowpost scoring threat. Praise Egharevba, a freshman forward coming off the bench for OSU, led the squad in scoring. She put up a season-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the paint and came down with seven rebounds. It was the first time this season a bench player led the Cowgirls in scor-

OSU coach Jacie Hoyt said she sees work ethic from Egharevba unlike any other player she has ever coached. “She is one of the best kids I’ve ever coached in terms of her work ethic,” Hoyt said. “The girl just has the heart of a lion, and she showed that today.” With four players in double digits for the Cowgirls, there wasn’t a shortage of offense. Quincy Noble and Stailee Heard, the reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Week, each contributed 11, and sharp-shooter Lior Garzon added 10. Although the size aspect played a factor, TCU’s scoring effort was not
completely diminished, as leading 3-point shooter Madison Conner ended the night with 20 points. But the 29.8% shooting from the field was not something the Horned Frogs (14-2, 1-2) were able to overcome. The Cowgirls continue conference play against Texas Tech at home on Wednesday night, and a statement win in Fort Worth before making their way back to Stillwater created momentum. “I’m so proud today just to see them trusting the process,” Hoyt said. “They were rewarded for it, and we’re going to take this momentum and we’re going to run with it.” sports.ed@ocolly.com
