Unlike a season ago, when the offensive line was often in jured and shuffled around like a deck of cards, the 2022 Cowboys have enjoyed continuity with the front five, which allows its play to synchronize.Evenwith the loss of line men Danny Godlevske and Josh Sills from 2021, the unit has some depth. Joe Michalski, who played snaps at center last year, and Hunter Woodard have split game reps at right guard.
Miterko, offensive line settling in after ‘shaky’ start
Andrea Riley had a strong relationship with the late Kurt Budke.
Although it’s his fourth year in the program, Taylor Mi terko was self-admittedly a little shaky starting off this season.
The line could feel itself relax and settle in. Especially Miterko.“Now that we’ve got a couple of games under our belt, it feels good,” Miterko said. “It feels good to just kind of get settled in and just be able to play and not worry about anything.”
“All of us are best friends outside of football,” Miterko said. “And so that doesn’t change when we get into football. We’re all so close, and we never have any problems amongst the unit. So I think chemistry is great. We communicate well, we all get along, so it’s been really
After the run game failed to reach four yards per carry against Central Michigan on opening week, Miterko wanted to see more output from himself and the rest of the offensive line. But it wasn’t just him – it was also coach Mike Gundy, who assessed his offensive line with a ‘C’ grade. Then, near the end of the first quarter against Arizona
State, the Cowboys had only 15 rushing yards, and Gundy still felt unsure about his of fensive line. But the front found its groove and finished strong against ASU, as OSU ended with nearly 200 yards rushing at 4.3 yards per attempt, earning the front “every bit of a ‘B’” grade with the head coach.

He’s had other live game action, notably at left tackle, but his first two career starts at left guard came in the Cowboys’ first two games of 2022. There were some growing pains.
Miterko played in only nine games over his first three years. Throughout the offseason, Miterko worked diligently to earn more playing time, eventu ally winning the battle for left guard.“It’s just every day, coming in with the mindset that I want to get a little bit better,” Miterko said. “And just with the experi ence I’ve had, playing here for three years, I’ve had the oppor tunity to do that a lot. Gundy said while he usually only plays starters at offensive line, subbing in and rotating linemen could actually be beneficial to keep players fresh – a rejuvenating luxury instead of a necessity, compared to last season. Other players have showed they can step up and be impactful.“We’re trying to facilitate guys that have practiced and have shown in practice they’re good enough to play,” Gundy said. “The question I’ve had with the coaches is why don’t they play? So, let’s see if they
can play. They’ve shown us a practice that we think they can perform. So, one, we can rest a guy; two, we can get a guy some experience. So why wouldn’t they play?”Lastyear, the run game and run blocking started out slow, before opening up in week three and introducing Jaylen Warren to the scene. In its first two games, OSU rushed 71 times and had only a 2.7 yard-per-rush average.Similarly, the current of fensive line dealt with a lagging start, but found a blueprint of success in the second half of the ASU game.Justas defensive backs and linebackers communicate, the offensive line reads defenses and communicates among one another. More communication, fewer lapses. Miterko saw the of fensive line grow into a cohesive unit, which starts off the field. Heading into the final nonconference matchup of the season, Gundy said there’s still room for improvement, but that the line is getting better. With a pair of starts and greater stabil ity, Miterko sees the O-Line continuing to improve.

Shettron are the most recent Cowboys to come from Edmond Santa Fe. Both had been mainstays in the Edmond Santa Fe offense, yet, one garnered more national attention than the other. The two still wanted to attain a lifelong goal of playing college football together. When the OSU offer came in for Tabry, Talyn didn’t hesitate joining his brother, decommitting from OU.
Anderson made progress in fall camp prior to the season opener against Central Michigan. With the experi ence and talent and potential he brings, coach Mike Gundy expects Anderson to be a key contributor this year.

Moments prior, the then sopho more wide receiver tripped over a sprinkler walking out of the tunnel for pregame warm ups and injured his an kle. Once projected as a starter heading into the season opener, Anderson was out for the game. It was later confirmed by team doctors that he broke his ankle and missed OSU’s 2021 campaign.
Brandon Weeden, an Edmond Santa Fe alumnus, was one of the best quarterbacks for OSU nearly a decade ago, setting a handful of records during his tenure in Stillwater.Forhow good Weeden was, Santa Fe coach Kyle White believed the trend of Edmond Santa Fe play ers ending up at OSU for college came into fruition with linebacker Calvin“IBundage.remember them doing such a good job with Calvin,” White said. “For the last eight years OSU has done such a good job of building great relation ships with our guys, and it really started with Calvin.”As Bundage made a name for himself at the college level, another Edmond Santa Fe pros pect was on the rise.

Although distraught and sour about the fact that he couldn’t play, Anderson remained intact with the team, asserting himself wherever he was needed while he recovered from his injury. He acted as, in his own words, one of the team cheerleaders.
Richardson, with a puzzled look on his face, asked for clarification. Anderson pointed to his ankle.
“It was bittersweet I guess,” Anderson said. “I don’t know if that’s the right word. But it hurt to know that I couldn’t help out that much. But of course I love to see my guys succeed. It was awesome to watch. Mentally it was challenging for the whole year. But even being a part of as good of a team as we were, it was fun.”
His arms flailing, head bob bing and legs springing. The then true freshman wide receiver was poised and ready to suit up for the first game of his collegiate career. OSU was set to take on Missouri State at Boone Pickens Stadium in its 2021 season opener, and kick off was less than two hours away.

“We were missing him,” Rich ardson said. “But obviously (we) had to have that next guy up mentality.”
As much as it pleased Anderson to watch his teammates and peers suc ceed, it was still slightly painful when coming to terms with the fact that he hadn’t had an opportunity to contribute.
“He was always around still,” Richardson said. “I lived in the dorms last year and so did he. You know, we’d hang out all the time outside of football and stuff and just keep growing as friends last year and all that. (I was) excited for the kid to start and then you
“It didn’t feel real to me at the time to be honest,” Anderson said. “I honestly double and triple checked with myself that I was gonna miss the whole season. I didn’t know what to do man, I was just so down on myself.”
That “next man up” mentality boded well for the Cowboys last season, especially among the wide receivers. A handful of young, first-year players were key contributors to what ended up being a 12-2 season for OSU in 2021, featuring an appearance in the Big 12 conference title game, and a win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl.

“There’s definitely some type of radioac tive chemicals in the metaphorical water in Edmond for us Edmond Santa Fe boys and OSU,” Ford said. “But at the same time they took a shot on me when others wouldn’t. I think that’s why they’re so good at in-state recruiting, like recruiting hometown kids, and it’s why they’re so good with Santa Fe recruits.”The Shettron brothers are another prime example of what made players such as Bundage, Ford, and Oliver commit— loyalty and consistently.“It’salways fun for me to watch our kids play at the next level, whether it be in college or in the NFL,” White said. “Stillwater has essentially become a second home for Santa Fe and our kids and it’s become a very special place to our football program. It’s always fun watching our guys play at the next level, regard less of where they’re at. It’s just a bit easier to get up to Stillwater than some of the other places.”
“I want him to just get out there and play,” Gundy said during fall camp. “He hadn’t even got the chance to go out there and play (at OSU). He’s do ing good so far and hopefully, he can continue to push through. We’re going to need him.”

She developed in each practice. Carmichael started to notice. She started 18 matches and became a member of the All-Big 12 Freshman Team.
She doesn’t even play forward and to get that many goals from her position is pretty amazing

“She’s as good a finisher as we’ve had here,” Carmichael said. “She can do it all.”

In March, redshirt junior Jake Schultz played defensive end on the OSU football team. Now, Schultz starts on the OSU offense as a cowboy back. Tuesday, Schultz talked about how the transition is going for him.

“I was not on board with it right away, I was pretty hesitant. They actu ally asked me a couple times and I said no, no, no but then in the spring coach (offensive coordinator Kasey) Dunn re ally pushed hard and said give it a shot, so I did.”
Q: Did you look at the (deep) defensive end depth chart when you made the switch?
Q: What’s the part of defense you most miss?

“I think so. I think it probably helped. I think just the nature of it is just try to be tough and aggressive, block people and catch the Mackenzieball.”
“I mean, tackling someone to go to the ground hurts. Hitting the ground all the time, that is one part of defense. The physicality, obviously, it’s physical

blocking people but when you’re hitting the ground on defense, you know (like OSU linebacker) Mason Cobb over and over tackling guys that takes a toll on you. So, I think that part of it.”
“They came to me. They thought I’d be a good fit. They lost some guys at the cowboy back position…they needed some bodies to fill in.”
Jake Schultz Q&A:
Q: What was Dunn’s convincing argument that finally made you make the switch?
Q: Is there a part of defense you’re happy you’re not doing any more?
“Normally we go up against line backers and defensive ends, you know, LEOs. So, some of those linebackers can hit. Normally I wouldn’t have to hit them but now I’m blocking them and they come downhill and they hit. And

Q: How did making the switch go about? Did coaches go to you or did you go to them?
“I miss getting in on a sack cel ebration. Getting a sack or a tackle or a big hit, I love that energy.”
“Running someone over or scor ing a touchdown.”
Q: Out of all the defensive play ers you played alongside what’s been maybe the most interesting part or least expected part about going up against them on the offensive side?
also some of our defensive ends, they fly around so blocking them, sometimes you got to block them one-on-one and they’re tough.”
Q: Was there much of a thought about it for you or were you pretty on board?
“Coming in I didn’t realize that’s who I would be behind. I was just wait ing it out, waiting, waiting and waiting. So I think this opportunity to switch over positions has worked out.”
Q: How far have you come in making the switch from playing de fensive end to cowboy back?
Q: What’s the equivalent to that for a cowboy back?
“In my opinion, I’ve always been a pretty good athlete but now this is a different side of the ball so I’m blocking instead of tackling. I think it’s worked out well for me.”
Q: You played offense in high school, have you picked up some of the OSU offense a little quicker than you expected?
Redshirt junior Jake Schultz moved from defensive end to cowboy back in the offseason.

Yes: Spencer Sanders fits the mold. He is a dual-threat quarterback with tremendous ability. Those types of players have cropped up in Heis man Trophy talks frequently in recent years. Sanders has displayed an ability to put up gaudy numbers. Through two weeks, he’s done just that; passing for 674 yards and six scores. Factor in his rushing output — 111 yards and three touchdowns — and Sanders has looked like one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. If he remains consistent through conference play and OSU loses just a game or two, I can easily envision Sanders earning an invitation to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Is Spencer Sanders a legitimate Heisman Trophy contender?
No: My choice has less to do with Sanders than it does with Okla homa State. In the College Football Playoff era, six quarterbacks have won the Heisman Trophy. Only one, La mar Jackson in 2016 with Louisville, failed to make the CFP. Sanders is a good player, underrated nationally and even locally, but he isn’t Jackson. The Cowboys aren’t making the CFP this season. Their chance came in 2021 with a top-five defense. Vegas Insider lists Sanders as tied for 22nd in Heis man odds, which isn’t a shot at Sand ers, but rather his situation.
