3 takeaways

After a five day hiatus from basketball, the Cowboys are back in the win column.

OSU de feated Sam Hous ton State, 65-51. Here are three takeaways from Tuesday night’s contest.

The Cow boys dominated the rebounding battle

OSU won the battle on the glass with ease, grabbing 37 of them on the night, to Sam Houston’s 22. The Cowboys also recorded 14 offensive rebounds, which led to 18 second chance points.

Moussa Cisse led the team with 13, Tyreek Smith grabbed five and three other Cowboys grabbed three.

“When I get an offensive rebound, I try to keep an eye out for somebody, I feel like we do a good job with that,” Cisse said.

Bryce Thompson posts his best game of the season Thompson

scored 17 points on an efficient 60% from the field and 67% from behind the arc. He was responsible for 14 of OSU’s first 16 points, hav ing scored 12 early points and assisting on the other two. The third-year guard also dished off three assists and grabbed two steals, one of the more all-around outings for the junior guard.

“I was ready to shoot and you know, I saw my first one go in and kept building,” Thompson said.

Efficient scoring leads to an OSU win

The Cow boys shot 38% from three in Tuesday’s win, its second high est of the season.

Thompson led the team in threepoint makes with four and John Michael-Wright knocked down two of them on four attempts.

OSU also shot 47% from the field and had four players score in double figures.

Cowboys secure important win for season-long goals

we had six in the first five minutes of the second half.”

With three losses this season, the Cowboys’ NCAA Tournament aspira tions could ill afford the way OSU started the second half.

So, OSU coach Mike Boynton opted for a hockey line change. He substituted all five cowboys out.

It worked, as evidenced by OSU’s 65-51 win against Sam Houston State.

“I thought we got away from what got us the lead more than any thing,” Boynton said. “We only had four turnovers in the first half and then

Maybe it was because there was a sense of urgency around the Cow boys (5-2). Sam Houston walked into Gallagher-Iba Arena ranked No. 7 in college basketball’s NET rankings. It would be an opportunity for a potential NCAA- Tournament-resume boosting win.

Junior guard Bryce Thompson was one of the players Boynton subbed out of the game. Even the team’s lead ing scorer who finished with 17 wasn’t safe from the hook.

It felt like Bryce Thompson’s heat-check fadeaway three at the buzzer was his only first-half shot that didn’t go in. Of course, he wasn’t flaw less, making 5-of-8 shots in the first half, but the way he carried the OSU offense made it seem like perfection.

That’s because Thompson knocked down four 3-pointers on five tries and finished with 15 points in the

first half. Thompson has eclipsed the 15-point mark seven times now in his career, doing most of the work early in the win on Tuesday.

“My teammates were able to find me,” Thompson said. “I was shotready, you know, ready to shoot and I saw my first one go in and just kind of kept building.”

Thompson quieted in the second half, making OSU’s defensive effort even louder. The Bearkats entered the night scoring 82.5 points per game in cluding scoring 120 against the vastlyovermatched Division II Southwestern Adventist Knights.

Point is, the Bearkats can score, and the Cowboys held them to 51.

“We got to build a statement,” OSU center Moussa Cisse said. “We’ve been losing easy games. I feel like now we figured out like how to play with each other.”

The best off-campus study locations

Finals week is here.

The last week of the semester means tests, stress and all-nighters for students at OSU. Relocating from your dorm room or apartment to a local cof fee shop or area on campus can make hours of studying more bearable.

For many students, their room is a place of relaxation. It’s where they wind down after a long day of classes

or spend time with friends. To ensure that your room remains a place of lei sure rather than stress, it is important to spend time studying outside of your living space.

A common study habit of col lege students is doing homework while they are in bed. Studying in bed makes focusing difficult and negatively affects your ability to fall asleep.

Freshman business major Linda Bakich said she struggles to with pro ductivity while studying in bed.

“Studying in bed makes me sleepy, and I won’t study,” Bakich said.

Jaiden Daughty OSU guard Bryce Thompson led the Cowboys with 17 points in their Tuesday night win over Sam Houston State. Bakich avoids studying in bed by sitting on the floor of her dorm room and recommended Panera Bread and Balanced Coffee Co. as good off-cam pus study spots. Panera Bread is located at 113 W. Hall of Fame Ave. Panera is suitable for students studying for long periods of time. Most booths have outlets for charging computers and students can eat a hot meal as they study, creating a homey atmosphere. Cole Gueldenzoph OSU big man Moussa Cisse snagged a team-high 13 rebounds during the Cowboys’ 65-51 win over Sam Houston State on Tuesday night.

OSU freshmen put on a show News

The show must go on—for the first time at least.

People piled into Gunderson to watch many OSU freshmen preform last Thursday.

For the first time, a group of 12 freshman presented solos, duets, trios, standup comedy and a fashion show in the Jerry L. Davis Studio Theatre on the second floor of Gunderson. Liliana Cudly and Dallas Rogers, the presi dent and vice president of the Student Theater Council respectively, were very excited to host the student’s perfor mances.

“We have had them work with up perclassmen,” said Cudly. “This is the first year that TCO (the theatre council) has been able to put on something like this since COVID.”

According to Cudly, the various groups had been practicing since the start of October. Gen Thomas Alexis, the head of productions, had been working on the idea since August or before then.

“This is the first year,” said Rog ers. “Hopefully we’ll do it again next year.”

Right as guests arrived, they were created by Liz Calandra, the president of Alpha Psi Omega, the theatre service fraternity. People were urged to bring boxed and canned goods to donate as a food drive. The donation was not re quired to enter, however, and admission was free for all.

Over the course of an hour the stage hosted a pianist and performers, and the first performance was “I Love Betsy” from Honeymoon in Vegas, a solo belted by Noah Horton. After that was Jay Matherly singing “Dulcinea” from Man of La Mancha. The solos were interjected by standup comedy from Brigham Miller that had the audi ence rolling.

Afterwards, the solos continued with Katlyn Farrer singing “Home” from Beauty and the Beast, followed by Savannah Harrod singing “I’m Breaking Down” from Falsettos. The songs were once again interjected by a fashion show, curated and displayed by Dice Troy. Four unique outfits strutted across the stage and showed off their

details.

“This isn’t really about me,” said Troy. “It’s about my wonderful models, Ethan, Kylee, Hilton and Tasha.”

After the fashion show, Brax ton Thompson, Jay Freeman and Leia Howton sang the first trio of the night, “I Love You Song” from 25th Annual Putnam City Spelling Bee. After their trio, the solos returned with Elizabeth

Brockman singing “The Girl in 14G,” Kyndall Reed singing “Carrie” from Carrie the musical and Jimmy Miller singing “Who I’d Be” from Shrek the Musical.

The night ended with a big trio sung by Noah Horton, Savannah Har rod and Kyndall Reed. The piece was “I’ve Decided to Marry You,” from A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Mur

der.

Balanced Coffee Co. is a favorite study spot among many OSU students. Located at 120 E. 9th Ave., Balanced Coffee Co. is near campus and offers plenty of seating and coffee options for studying students.

Aspen Coffee is another study spot frequented by OSU students. Aspen Coffee has two Stillwater locations, one located at 111 W. 7th Ave. and another at 1908 N. Perkins Rd. Each coffee shop’s walls are lined with colorful decorations and paintings. If studying in a coffee shop isn’t your thing but you’re still in search of caf feine, Aspen Coffee has a drive through location that is walk ing distance from campus at 139 S. Duck St.

Although Edmon Low Library is never a bad loca tion for a study session, some students, such as sophomore sociology major Callie Gray, prefer to study elsewhere on campus.

Gray branches out by studying under her favorite tree on campus or sitting at the tables outside the Student Union.

“I really enjoy find ing the really big shady trees around campus to lay down a nice blanket and do homework and study,” Gray said. “Some times the library is a little too busy or crowded and you need more space around you, so it’s nice.”

No matter how many tests are approaching, students should always prioritize their mental health. The Reboot Center in the Student Union offers ways for students to re charge after studying while on campus, and Pete’s Pet Posse dogs visit the library often to visit with homesick students.

Lana Del Rey returns with new song and 2023 album announcement

LOS ANGELES — Lana Del Rey is back, and she’s got Southern Califor nia on her mind once again.

The Los Angeles-based singersongwriter dropped a new single on Wednesday, “Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd,” the title track from her ninth studio album, which she announced is due March 10.

A mournful, slow-rolling piano

ballad lacquered with glossy oldHollywood strings, the song appears to have been inspired by “a long-forgotten Art Deco pedestrian tunnel,” as the Los Angeles Times described it in 1992, that “lies beneath Ocean Boulevard at Pine Avenue” in Long Beach. Ac cording to the L.A. Times, the tunnel — which has a vaulted ceiling and runs 181 feet in length — was built in 1927 “so that beach-goers could avoid trafficclogged streets.”

“Did you know that there’s a tun nel under Ocean Boulevard?/ Mosaic ceilings, painted tiles on the wall,” Del Rey sings in her signature femme-fatale

sigh, “I can’t help but feel somewhat like my body, mind, my soul/ Handmade beauty sealed up by two manmade walls.” She goes on to reference Camarillo, Harry Nilsson and “Hotel California” and pleads with someone to “f— me to death, love me until love myself.”

“Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd” is the fol low-up to Del Rey’s pair of 2021 LPs, “Chemtrails Over the Country Club” and “Blue Banisters,” and will arrive almost four years after 2019’s critically adored “Norman F—ing Rockwell!,” which was thick with L.A. iconography

related to Laurel Canyon, Long Beach, the Venice boardwalk and a bar where the Beach Boys used to go.

The new album was produced by Del Rey’s frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff, among others, and features contributions by Jon Batiste, Father John Misty and Antonoff’s band Bleachers. Earlier this year Del Rey released a cover of Father John Misty’s song “Buddy’s Rendezvous” and ap peared on “Snow on the Beach,” a track from Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” album.

‘Vinland Saga’: An incredible viking tale

“Vinland Saga” season two has the potential to win Anime of the Year.

“Vinland Saga” is a historical fiction adventure anime adapted from the manga of the same name. “Vinland Saga” originally was released in 2005, but was not picked up for an anime adaptation until July 2019. “Vinland Saga” takes place in 1013 A.D. Eng land following a group of vikings as they participate in European historical events and conflicts. Though “Vinland Saga” is a fiction piece, it contains many real historical figures and events, but exaggerates some details to make for a more compelling and entertaining story.

Wit Studios adapted the first season of “Vinland Saga” and it was released on Amazon Prime. Wit Stu dios is the same studio that adapted the first three seasons of “Attack on Titan.” “Vinland Saga” is now available on Netflix in Japanese with English subtitles and dubbed in English. Mappa Studios picked up the second season of “Vinland Saga” and will be released on Netflix on Jan. 9. Mappa Studios is the same studio that adapted “Jujutsu Kaisen,” “Chainsaw Man” and season four of “Attack on Titan.”

The first season of “Vinland Saga” functions as the prologue to Thorfinn Karlsefni’s story.

Karlsefni is a young Viking boy that gets roped into countless conflicts across England and other European countries. Throughout the series, the audience sees Karlsefni grow and figure out what is the purpose of his own life. Without spoiling events of the first season, season one Karlsefni is on a revenge quest, but he learns along his journey that pursuing vengeance might not be what truly will make him happy.

“Vinland Saga” is a thought pro voking story. The show has excellent character writing and character arcs set up for the cast to keep the story fresh and have the characters feel grounded in reality. There are some exaggera tions though with how they portray the strengths of these characters to make them seem monstrous but at the same time human.

“Vinland Saga” also contains great themes and symbolism. Vinland is a real place in the story, but func tions more as a symbol of freedom. While something as simple as wheat functions as a growth for Karlsefni among other themes.

Season two of “Vinland Saga” will adapt the farmland story arc of the manga. Farmland is widely regarded as the best arc of the series, and one of the most well written arcs in this

century of manga. Readers of the series should be filled with even more excite ment as Mappa Studios is a great studio to adapt this arc. In recent memory, Mappa Studios has brought great adaptations with some amazing visu als and use of lighting in their projects, and this should translate brilliantly to “Vinland Saga.”

“Vinland Saga” is a great anime to get into for beginners and a great an ime for people who have been watching

anime for years. It is simplistic enough to follow easily while also being in depth in its writing, so any viewer can find enjoyment. There is only about a month before the release of season two, but there is still time to binge season one on Netflix in time to catch up to what might be 2023’s Anime of the Year.

Top films of 2022

2022 proved to be one of the best years for films in recent years, from sleeper horror hits such as “Pearl” and “Barbarian” to main stream classics such as “Top Gun: Maverick” and “The Batman.”

Choosing just five films to highlight such a fantastic time for cinema is a difficult task. Regard less, here are five of some of the best films in 2022. Just know there are plenty of excellent films that didn’t make the cut.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ When my stepbrother dragged me to see this film, I was surprised that it was excellent. “Top Gun: Mav erick” is a safe, inoffensive film that takes no risks and holds no surprises. Despite this, it’s a fun and enjoy able watch. One of the last of its kind in the “action movies that are actually good” genre.

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

In my initial review for “Wakanda Forever,” I highlighted a lot of its flaws and pacing issues. While I still believe it is messy, this film has more heart than any other Marvel film.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is a great reflec tion on grief and healing, and so far, I have seen more people resonate with this film than any other on this list. Because of it, it has more than earned its place.

‘Nope’

From Jordan Peele, the director of “Us” and “Get Out,” this movie tells a captivating story involv

ing aliens, monkeys and a shockingly poignant cri tique on the entertainment industry. It has a strong narrative, great perfor mances and one of the most unsettling concepts the horror genre has had in a long time. If you know, you know. Despite the title, “Nope” gets a resounding yep from me.

‘The Batman’

Sitting in the theater and watching this film in IMAX has to be one of my favorite theater experiences of all time. “The Batman” finally brings us back to a story that understands who Batman is. Paul Dano and Robert Pattinson are powerhouses in their per formances, and the entire film is filled with style and atmosphere. In my opinion, this is the best Batman film of all time.

‘Everything Every where All at Once’

This is the generic choice, but it is absolutely deserved. Michelle Yeoh plays a Chinese immigrant, going through the multi verse to solve a problem only she can fix. The action is on point, the film is a mind-blowing visual spec tacle and the story is poi gnant in a way that anyone can relate to.“Everything Everywhere All at Once” taught me that nothing mat ters and that’s okay. This film is a stunning, existen tial masterpiece perfect for college students lost in life.

There is no doubt that 2022 is gonna be a tough act to follow for 2023.
