T

he bass drops. The feet stomp. The bodies move in perfect rhythm as the Oklahoma State Hip Hop Dance Crew practices for another groundbreaking performance.

The dance crew held auditions last week, and Anushka Raje, a business management senior and the crew’s president, said the team has high expectations for her last semester with the team.

“This semester is super crazy, but it’s also so fun, especially because of what all we have going on here with the dance crew,” Raje said.

“I’ve never been president of anything until last semester, so it’s been really cool to be in charge of something I love.”

Established in fall 2011, the crew has grown significantly and changed its dynamics in the past few years, Raje said.

The crew has 20 members, made up of 19 women and one man.

“It can be challenging only having one guy on the team,” Raje said. “But he (Rio Rinaldi) and the rest of the team is so ready for anything that we throw at them, so it’s never really been an issue.”

The majority of the dancers have been a part of the crew for consecutive years,

Raje said.

“We practice for two hours every week, but even that can be too time consuming for people in college,” Raje said.

The crew performs every year at the OSU Glo Run, as well as its own fall and spring showcases.

“We’ve performed a few OCOLLY.COM

times on campus, but scheduling-wise, it can be hard to get 20 dancers in one place at the same time,” said Brandi Williams, an accounting junior and the crew’s secretary.

Apart from an occasional performance on campus, the crew dedicates all of its rehearsal time to its show at

the end of April.

“We learned a full threeminute routine last semester, but this semester, we want to add to the first one with an additional two routines,” Williams said.

Dance Company as the two alternate back and forth from more contemporary pieces to current hip-hop selections, Raje said.

“We primarily stick to only hip-hop dances,” Raje said.

“But we have quite a few dancers with different talents on the team, so we try to choreograph those numbers around their strengths.”

The crew has taken its show on the road in the past but lacks the funding needed to go to large competitions held in Dallas every year, Raje said.

“I would love to have enough time and money to take the team to huge competitions,” Raje said. “However, we really just don’t have the funding to do that yet.

I’m hopeful for the future, though.”

The Wellness Department manages and maintains sports clubs on campus, including Hip Hop Dance Crew. Clubs are encouraged to provide instruction, recreation and competition, according to the Wellness Department website.

The crew receives about $500 a semester, leaving them to pay for additional needs out of pocket, Raje said. Each member is required to pay $35 in dues each semester.

“If we had more funding as a club we could consider going on the road to compete,” Raje said. “We have had to do fundraisers in the past to help pay for things, which might also happen again this semester, if necessary.”

“I heard about the dance crew at the Glo Run a few years ago and knew I had to join,” Williams said. “I did pom in high school and was looking for a way to challenge myself and stay involved.”

Most of the members on the crew danced in studios before they came to college, Raje said.

“The whole reason I joined

the crew is because it gave me the option to keep dancing when I didn’t really have anywhere else to go,” Raje said. “Going to college takes up so much of your time to do other things you enjoy.”

Everyone acts like a family in and out of the studio, said Brook Wiley, sports media sophomore and member of the team.

“We mesh together so well,” Wiley said. “Even OCOLLY.COM

though we only practice once a week, we like to meet together and hang out as much as we can.”

Constantly pushing themselves, the crew works on the same routine hundreds of times until it’s performed just right, Raje said.

“We encourage each other so much,” Raje said. “We do some pretty difficult things, so it feels awesome when we finally figure it out.”

Although Raje graduates in the spring, she sees big things in store for the crew in the upcoming years.

“I want everyone on campus to know about us and what we do,” Raje said. “Every Wednesday is harder than the last and each rehearsal brings new challenges, but I believe in what this crew can do.”

Sia loses herself on new album Jordan Bishop Sta f f R e p o rt e r

Sia became popular by being the strange, mysterious star behind hits such as “Titanium” and “Chandelier.” She has been a unique breath of fresh air to the pop scene since her last album “1,000 Forms of Fear” in 2014.

So why change that?

In her sixth studio album, “This is Acting,” Sia sings like everyone but herself. The songs on the album were written for other pop stars who turned them down, and she didn’t bother changing the musical arrangements to fit her style. The result: a series of ballads meant for Adele, Rihanna, Beyonce and Shakira but sung by Sia. A few songs on the album could see radio time, but they

are the ones in which Sia sounds most like herself — seductive vocals mixed with snare drums and haunting lyrics.

“Bird Set Free,” the first song on the album, is clearly meant for Adele. The way it’s composed would make a great addition to Adele’s “25.” Adele recorded the song, but it didn’t make it onto the album. Lyrics such as “You held me down/I struggle to fly now” are characteristic of Adele’s tradition to sing about heartbreak.

Adele or not, this is one of the best songs on “This is Acting.”

“Alive” sounds as if it’s meant for Rihanna, and this is when the album turns strange. Sia tries to emulate Rihanna and it’s jarring, mostly because Sia is yelling.

Another stop on the Sia impression tour is Shakira in “Move Your Body.” Even the name of the song is Shakiraesque. Lyrics such as, “Feel my rhythm in your system/This is heaven/I’m your only friend” evoke the Colombian’s style.

Sia might be able to emulate Rihanna and Adele to an extent, but she doesn’t come close to Shakira.

“Unstoppable” is a true Sia

song. It sounds and feels like her. I have a feeling it’s going to be the breakout song of the album. The snare beats are subtle compared to the boom clap sound used in half the songs on the record.

The boom clap sound takes positive attributes away from songs such as “Reaper” and “House on Fire.” It covers up beautiful usages of an underlying organ and passionate crooning that need air to breathe.

The worst song on the album is “Sweet Design.” Seriously, stay away from track 10. Sia is known for being a strange character, but this song isn’t meant for human ears. The lyrics don’t make sense, it uses what sounds like a chipmunk voice modulator and is overall garbage. I have no idea for who or what Sia made this song, but it’s not you.

“This is Acting” is a peculiar album with a few hits. It would have been better if Sia sang as herself. As an artist who didn’t receive fame until she was 40, Sia doesn’t need to reinvent herself or appeal to younger crowds. Her fans love her for who she is, not imitating someone else. In fact, she said
