He sat silently outside Edmon Low Library with his peers surrounding him.

His mouth was ducttaped with the word “UNHEARD” written in thick black letters across the silver tape. Hundreds held large signs with their mouths sealed.

This silent protest happened within days of Martin Luther King Day in 2017 after two racially insensitive pictures were posted on social media. The first included four female students, two wearing masks, on Jan. 17, 2017. The second came six days later with one female student wearing a mud mask with the caption, “When he says he only likes black girls.”

James Sullivan said he is tired of seeing race relations not being handled in the proper way at Oklahoma State University, so he has decided to put matters into his own hands.

“We are tired of seeing these actions happen and the punishment is just a slap on the wrist,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan, a recent OSU sports media alumnus from Plano, Texas, is one of the main faces of The Four Percent, a recently formed student activist group at OSU. The Four Percent is “a group of concerned students on campus pushing for change,” Sullivan said.

The Four Percent formed this semester after Jake Pulliam, a management information systems junior from Catoosa, posted a racially-charged social media post on his Snapchat story Jan. 16.

As a result of his actions, Pulliam was fired from his residential life position and removed from his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon.

However, Pulliam has been conditionally added back into Sigma Phi Epsilon, according to a statement released late Sunday night on the chapter’s Twitter account.

These examples aren’t the first time racial controversy has emerged at OSU while Sullivan was here. The first incident occurred when students posted racially-insensitive comments in 2014 about African-American sorority members on Yik Yak, an app that allows users to anonymously communicate with people within a certain

radius.

Sullivan also said the death of Terence Crutcher, an unarmed black man who police officer Betty Shelby shot Sept. 16, 2016, affected peers close to him who were from Tulsa. All of these incidents led Sullivan to step up and take charge, he said.

“There comes a time in every civil rights movement where you have to speak up and act out,” Sullivan said.

For Sullivan, having the courage to be a leader for activist groups and predominantly black groups of color was a process. During his years at college, he had to grow and learn. Sullivan said he believes he has the ability to lead a group such as this one.

“I grew every year that I was there,” Sullivan said.

“Whether it was joining a fraternity or being involved in a club, it all helped me evolve into a leader.”

The Oklahoma Students and Solidarity group protested in response to deaths of unarmed African Americans. Although Sullivan didn’t have a leadership role in the group, he said he did actively engage in all the protests that occurred.

they wanted the university to meet. Recently, The Four Percent sent a list of demands, including the creation of mandatory diversity training. Sullivan said he thinks students should be forced to take the training before any incidents can happen.

“It would serve as a warning sign just to slow

racists drivers down,” Sullivan said. “If you speed past a 25-mile-per hour sign, and a cop pulls you over going 70 miles per hour, you can’t say you didn’t know.”

Sullivan is one of the key faces in The Four Percent’s meetings, but working just as hard as him to lead the group is Chance Galloway.

Sullivan said he and Galloway connected because they were the only ones who really wanted to step up.

Galloway, a psychology junior from Tulsa, has put in just as much work to The Four Percent as Sullivan.

The duo brings different qualifications to the table, but both have the same goal in mind.

“I reached out to James because I saw his passion for this,” Galloway said.

Sullivan said the lack of communication is the central issue surrounding race relations.

Erin Dyke, an assistant professor of curriculum studies at OSU, is one of the professors willing to

support The Four Percent.

“As faculty, I feel frustrated that it often falls to students to respond to these acts of racism,” Dyke said.

Dyke has been a professor at OSU for only a few years but said she quickly reached out to Sullivan and Galloway to figure out how she could help show gratitude toward the movement.

Dyke has been able to relate to Sullivan and Galloway because she was also a student organizer in college.

Dyke said she wanted the black community to know someone is there to support them and stand by them.

As for the future, Sullivan said he hopes people begin to take change into their own hands. He said that too many times people wait to

bring the change, instead of bringing it themselves.

For now, Sullivan said he understands he and The Four Percent have a lot of work to do but hopes the movement can get bigger, and people will start to understand.

Although rain once again disrupted the Oklahoma State baseball team’s plan, the Cowboys had enough time to reveal their depth.

OSU steered itself past Little Rock 9-2 as seven Cowboys crossed home plate Tuesday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

Play ceased after the sixth inning, and weather disruptions are nothing new for the Cowboys. OSU (5-1) didn’t play its first two home games last week because of inclement weather.

The Cowboy pitching staff and fielders built a tough defense, and on offense, OSU stealthily improved its scoring chances. Kroon, Funk, Cabbiness and Daniel DeSimone, a redshirt freshman designated hitter, each stole a base. DeSimone also tallied his first career hit when he singled up the right side, opening the door for Funk to reach home and give the Cowboys a 2-1 lead in the second inning.

Wednesday in Allie P. Holliday enjoyed the Cowboys’ victory in the first matchup of the two-game series, but he is ready for rain to stop affecting their schedule so they can display more of the team depth they showed Tuesday.

“Every inning’s a chance for someone to do something, and it’s a chance for someone to grow and someone to have a moment, and that’s why you love to play,” Holliday said.

Gajewski, the Oklahoma State softball team’s coach, has tinkered with his lineup to find ways to replace senior Rylee Bayless. She moved to the outfield this season, but Bayless will miss the remainder of the season because she tore her left anterior cruciate ligament during practice before the Cowgirls’ second tournament at the Michele Smith Invitational in Clearwater, Florida.

OSU hosts the Mizuno Classic this weekend, as Omaha, Maine and Saint Francis come to Cowgirl Stadium, and Gajewski said Tuesday he will experiment with his lineups to try and fill the void.

“I want to see what some kids can do back home in the friendly confines of Cowgirl Park,” Gajewski said.

“We’ve got some ideas in our heads of how we can adjust there. We’re still looking, still playing around with things.”

Bayless found out her ACL was torn Wednesday and told her teammates on the bus before they left for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic last weekend.

Gajewski said it was emotional and tough to watch because there was a lot of discussion as to whether Bayless would return this season and how severely the knee was damaged.

Gajewski said having Bayless back interacting with the team will help its energy and charisma after strenuous road trips to begin the season. Whitehorn agreed with Gajewski, saying when the team found out Bayless wouldn’t play again this season, it was upsetting.

Bayless is attempting to receive a medical redshirt. Even without her being on the field, Whitehorn said Bayless and the team will be more tenacious moving forward because of the adversity.

For the first time in Oklahoma State history last weekend, the 2,469 spectators who walked through Allie P. Reynolds Stadium’s gates had the opportunity to watch a baseball game with a beer in hand.

The latest venture of OSU athletics has been the introduction of alcohol sales to the general public at Cowboy baseball and Cowgirl softball home games this season.

The Cowgirls haven’t played at home yet, but the Cowboys broke the barrier Saturday with their two-game homestand in their opening series against Marist.

Although more people were at the home opener Saturday, with attendance reaching 1,542, more beers were sold to the 927 fans in attendance Sunday.

During the weekend, 290 beers were sold at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Saturday’s game had 125 sold, and 165 on Sunday.

For Cody Bartlett, a Blanchard, Oklahoma, resident, the addition of beer to his favorite weekend activity makes the drive to Stillwater all the more worthwhile.

“It gives it more like a Major League atmosphere, so that might entice more people to be here,” Bartlett said.

Bartlett went on to say he comes to several Cowboy baseball games every year, but he was impressed with

We have all been there.

The clock strikes 10 p.m., and all you can think about are cheese tots. Whether you’re in need of a midnight study break or something in your stomach to save you from the Sunday scaries, here’s a list of Stillwater’s eating establishments open late enough to satisfy those midnight cravings.

The basics: McDonald’s, Whataburger, Taco Bell These three might be unnecessary to include, but what is better than a honey butter chicken biscuit, shredded chicken burrito or those famous McNuggets?

All three are open 24 hours a day, so they are a perfect go-to if all else fails. Be sure to download the McDonalds app for exclusive deals and coupons for your next visit.

Mexican food: Qdoba, Taco Bueno If you’re looking for a step up from Taco Bell, try out Qdoba or Taco Bueno.

Qdoba is open until 3 a.m. every day except Sundays, and Taco Bueno is open until 1 a.m. Be sure to ask for a kids bowl at Qdoba; it comes with a customized bowl, side and a drink, all for $4.33.

Insomnia Cookies, at 215 S. Washington Street, is open until 3 a.m., making it a great late-nate place to eat.

The Strip: Coney Island, The Curty Shack, Insomnia Cookies, Jimmy John’s If you happen to be walking down The Strip this weekend, be sure to check out one of these four locations. The Curty Shack is famous for its “Dirty Curty,” but it also serves pizza, tots and fries until 2:30 am.

Coney Island is known for its chili cheese tots and is the perfect late-night hang out for you and your crew until 2:30 a.m., as well.

Jimmy Johns is sure to get the job done with its custom sandwiches. Jimmy Johns closes at 4 a.m. but is also available for delivery. If you’re craving something sweet, be sure to check out Insomnia Cookies. Insomnia is open until 3 a.m. and also provides delivery services.

Breakfast: IHOP, Shortcakes Diner If you’re in the mood for a 24-hour breakfast restaurant,

you are in luck. Stillwater is home not only to an IHOP, but a local establishment, Shortcakes Diner. Both restaurants also have lunch and dinner options if you aren’t looking for eggs and bacon.

Miscellaneous: The Garage is a burger joint open until midnight, located on West Elm. Not only are its burgers phenomenal, but be sure to order a round of queso and fries.

Buffalo Wild Wings is a great place to get your friends together, eat, watch a game and laugh until 2 a.m.

Louie’s is a bar and grill located downtown, and is open until midnight if you and your friends are in the mood for a sit-down restaurant with great service and even better food.
