John Cooper has been performing with the Red Dirt Rangers since the birth of red dirt music in his Stillwater college house 35 years ago.

Affectionately referred to as “The Farm,” Cooper regularly hosted gatherings that became jam sessions and inspiration for the likes of Garth Brooks, The Skinner Brothers, The Great Divide, Bob Childers and more.

“We were outside of town just far enough that the law left us alone,” Cooper said.

Cooper paints a picture of OSU students in the 1970s, with a legal drinking age of 18 and without the distraction of technology, in search of something to do. Separated from Tulsa and OKC by slow, two-lane highways, Cooper’s friends found themselves regularly writing music, and soon Stillwater’s music scene was booming.

At that time, Garth Brooks was playing at Willie’s every Wednesday night and The Strip saw a revolving door of nightly bands. Students frequented the popular local record store, The Record Exchange, and red dirt music started gaining notoriety outside of Stillwater.

“We had to make our own fun, and we did,” Cooper said. “Our fun was music.”

That music warrants a place in the new Ken Burns’ new documentary “Country Music,” which will be premiered in Stillwater Sunday.

Student Union Theatre Sunday and preview 45 minutes of the 16-hour film.The Red Dirt Rangers will be performing in the Student Union Theatre prior to the screening.

The band will go on stage at 1:30 p.m.

Back in the 70s, new bands would play a gig down on the strip before heading back to The Farm to bounce ideas around and play more music, crafting a sound all its own. Cooper is adamant about one thing: red dirt music was born in Stillwater and ground zero was The Farm.

“It just happened,”

Cooper said. “A scene started, and it was magic.”

Then, with inspiration from Bob Childers and Tom Skinner, The Red Dirt Rangers were formed. Its members, Brad Piccolo, John Cooper, and Ben Han, have weathered every storm that came their way.

And 35 years later, they’re still performing red dirt music.

Over the years, the Red Dirt Rangers have toured the U.S. from coast to coast and internationally. In 1994, they embarked on the “Oklahoma World Tour” performing 33 concerts in 30 days. And in 2017, The Red Dirt Rangers were inducted into Oklahoma’s Music Hall of Fame.

The documentary is an eight-part, 16-hour series exploring the history and distinctly American art form that is country music. Featuring interviews with some of country music’s greatest stars such as Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Garth Brooks and more, the series had created notable buzz and stirred up discussion on the unique origins and essence of country music.

Cooper argues that while red dirt music has elements of country music, it is not country.

He sees red dirt as a unique combination of bluegrass, blues, funk,

rock ‘n’ roll, cajun and swing.

Despite the hodgepodge sound that is red dirt music, Cooper welcomes anyone interested in trying their hand at creating and performing it.

“There is no one saying this is red dirt, and this is not,” Cooper said. “We have no gatekeeper.”

While it may not tackle the specifics of red dirt, the Ken Burns documentary works to analyze the rise of country music from its American roots to the mid 1990s. Ken Burns’ decision to stop the documentary in the 1990s as opposed to current day has also stirred some discussion on how country has progressed as a genre.

“We love country, and I want to see it come back to actually being country music,” Cooper said.

Cooper does not stand alone with that sentiment. Country music icons have publicly called out modern country artists for how far they have taken country music from its roots, with artists such as Lee Ann Womack and Merle Haggard calling it unrecognizable. Cooper simply calls it “bro country.”

However today’s country is defined, Cooper has some advice.“Do yourself a

favor and listen to country music pre-1995,” Cooper joked.

But after having interviewed more than 80 country music artists about their experience in the industry and what the genre means, Ken Burns’ “Country Music” is a welcome reminder of country music’s roots.

Though Cooper grew up in Putnam City, he considers Stillwater home and is excited to play on campus this weekend.

The Red Dirt Rangers have been playing in Stillwater for over three decades, and despite considering moving, they stayed because of Stillwater’s unique community. While other

scenes like Nashville and Austin can be cutthroat and competitive, Stillwater has remained supportive and loving.

Bands care about each other just as the community does.

“When one boat goes up, we all rise together,” Cooper says.

“And that’s the way it’s always been in our scene.”

Stillwater is the official birthplace of red dirt music, a still-growing musical phenomenon, and the rarity of this community is not lost on Cooper.

“That Stillwater thing… it’s magic,” Cooper said. “This is it.”

At the conclusion of the Oklahoma State soccer team’s exhibition game against Tulsa, Hannah Webb and Olyvia Dowell, two notable players, were absent.

A week later, and now fully healthy, both players are ready to make their mark on the upcoming season.

OSU coach Colin Carmichael deploys a formation that relies heavily on wingbacks.

The pressure he puts on the players he chose

as wingbacks is both physically and tactically demanding.

With his team bolster from Webb and Charmé Morgan’s return, Carmichael now has his preferred wingbacks in time for its season opener against Lamar.

For Webb, benign health and playing the formation that the Cowgirls do gives OSU an advantage against every team they play.

“I think that teams aren’t used to playing a formation (like ours),” Webb said. “They don’t know how to defend it, so I think that

gives us an edge.”

With Webb missing the exhibition, the debut of the player whom Carmichael said might be his most improved, had to be delayed. “(Hannah) Webb

might be the most improved player in the squad,” Carmichael said. “She can run all day, she can get up and down the flank, she’s really improved her left foot. We feel really

good, that’s one of the positions I think we’re gonna be very strong.”

For Dowell, however, the situation is quite different.

She is a true freshman with everything, but a defined role, looking to take up any minutes that she can get her hands on.

In its exhibition game, OSU played a 3-5-2 with junior Gabriella Coleman and senior Jaci Jones playing up front.

With Dowell back in the mix, he has another weapon to deploy going forward.

Prior to the season,

Dowell was a player that Carmichael touted as one that could make a substantial impact as a freshman.

“Olyvia Dowell is special, she’s a really good player,” Carmichael said. “We knew that recruiting her.

She’s young, she still has things to learn, but when she gets on the ball she makes things happen. She’s got tricks, she’s got some spins, flicks, backheels and she can finish.

She’s one to watch, I think the crowd are going to love. She’s a kid that gets you on the edge of your seat.”

The Oklahoma State soccer team’s 17 shots in its exhibition game against Tulsa resulted in only two goals.

Improvement is expected.

Lamar will be the next test for the Cowgirls on Thursday in Beaumont, Texas. These two sides met last year and OSU dominated the Cardinals, winning 4-0.

Hannah Webb, an OSU defender, said she hopes for a similar result on Thursday.

from Lamar except it will be good competition. We’ll just have to come out there take one game at a time and hopefully destroy them,” said Webb.

In its game against Tulsa, OSU coach Colin Carmichael started Gabriella Coleman, a transfer from Mississippi State, and veteran senior Jaci Jones at the striker position. Both players were heavily involved in attack with Coleman scoring one of the Cowgirls’ two goals.

Coleman talked about how scoring her first goal has gotten rid of some of the nerves she had playing as a transfer.

“I was like, ‘Oh I have to get a goal in this game’,’’ said Coleman. “Especially being nervous and playing in my first game here at Oklahoma State it was a lot of pressure.”

With the expectations of scoring her first goal no longer on her shoulders, Coleman will be hungry for more in the Lone Star state.

She will be joined in the attack with another newcomer this Thursday. Olyvia Dowell is fit and expected to play which, will increase the lethality of the Cowgirls’ offense.

“Olyvia is certainly a player who can help us in the attacking area and

should be quite dangerous,” said Carmichael.

more chances. Carmichael emphasized the difficulty of turning those chances into goals.

“It’s the hardest thing to get,” Carmichael said. “That final pass, final run and the finish is the hardest thing to do in soccer.

We’ve worked on it, the kids should be a little bit sharper, their legs shouldn’t be quite as heavy coming out of preseason so I would fully expect when those opportunities fall Thursday and Sunday that maybe we do a bit better of a job of that.”

One-hundred dollars and a persistent attitude can push you to places you never thought you would reach in life.

For Pete Craver and Daniel Woodruff, they were ready to be persistent when it came time to start their own business as students at Oklahoma State University.

“I knew I wanted to start and run a business,” said Craver, a professional aviation senior. “I wanted to make things, and I figured the first time I ran a business I was going to fail, right? It’s kind of just what happens.”

Yet, he didn’t.

With only $100, Craver and Woodruff flipped their money into a second-place win at a business planning competition. From that, Craver and Woodruff have made “tens of thousands of dollars” in revenue.

Their t-shirt printing company, Infinite Prints, had their first costumer 2 years ago in the African Student Organization.

Since then, Infinite Prints has printed t-shirts for a multitude of organizations on campus including several fraternities and sororities.

groups,” Craver said. “We are kind of thinking about what they need to do. So maybe they are trying to resell their stuff to help raise money for a cause, so we are willing to work with them on that and give them a price break.”

The company originally outsourced their printing operations, then they grew to having one heat press.

But now Infinite prints is much better equipped for everyone’s needs.

“Now we’ve grown to have a bunch of different presses,” Craver said. “We have an embroidery machine, and we do all kinds of different stuff. Not just t-shirts but jackets and hats and everything else.”

Craver isn’t just running this business for himself, he is also helping OSU out in his venture.

“For instance, we are doing something later this fall where we are going to have some flash sales with the fraternities and

sororities,” Craver said.

“A huge chunk of that money is going to go to the philanthropy of their choice.”

Infinite Prints continues to grow under the direction of Craver and Woodruff. The company will soon be moving into a warehouse on the outskirts of town, their social media presence has grown and a website is quickly on the way.

Students are at the forefront of Craver’s mind when it comes to his business model and who he would like to cater to, and it can be seen in the work he and his staff have put into Infinite Prints.

“We are just really excited to work with students,” Craver said.

“We are entirely student run and owned. So we would love to work with you and hopefully we are able to continue helping everybody throughout the future.”
