House rules OSU res life looking forward to upcoming semester Connor Burgan Staff Reporter OSU residential life director Leon McClinton faced the biggest task of his career in 2020. Not only did he have to take care of himself and family in a worldwide crisis, he also had to prepare an entire school to live during it. McClinton thrived under pressure. Throughout the first three months of the 20202021 academic year, nearby hotels and OSU agreed to lease out hotel rooms for students who had tested pos-

itive for COVID-19, giving students in quarantine a more comfortable experience, instead of living in dorms. “(Last summer) we definitely had to spend a lot of time preparing for the 2020 and 2021 academic year,” McClinton said. “Senior leaders Shannon Baughman and Tanya Massey spent a great deal of time setting us up for success.” But that was last year. Now, McClinton’s onto the next task: ensuring safety and calmness as the Delta variant rages through the country. While See House on pg.2

Participating in Greek Life at OSU is a great way to get involved on campus.

A guide to going Greek at OSU Kalynn Schwandt Staff Reporter As a new college student,

Greek Life is a way to get involved at Oklahoma State University. Within a Greek chapter, there are opportunities that can enhance leadership abilities, friendship, academics and community

involvement. At OSU, there are around 45 chapters within four governing councils. These councils include the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic

Council, Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council. The Interfraternity Council See Greek on pg.2

House... Continued from pg.1 COVID restrictions are easing up in Stillwater, Mcclinton and his staff have begun to make improvements throughout the dorms, as well as creating new resources for

News students. Notable additions for students living on campus this year will be the extended availability of community mentors. Mentors will now be required to have their doors open for students for two hours a week to help assist students with any problems. “This modification will hopefully help residents that are seeking support and guidance within their

living environment,” McClinton said. While students are returning back to pre-COVID activities and gatherings, McClinton and his team are ecstatic to resume events and activities throughout campus. “We are really excited about offering large group events this year,” McClinton said. ”We want every on-campus resident to be successful in and outside of the

classroom” Before the academic year begins, OSU’s Residence Hall Association has already scheduled their first event, “Late Night Cafe” at North Dining on August 13th, with other events being scheduled throughout the fall semester.

and Panhellenic Council participate in recruitment processes in which potential new members can join chapters before fall semester at OSU. The Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council both participate in intake processes that begin following the fall semester and typically require college credit prior to joining chapters. “For MGC and NPC, their intake process could happen either semester,” Casey Domnick, the

coordinator of Fraternity & Sorority Affairs, said. “Students who are interested, we encourage them to follow those fraternities and sororities Instagram pages because that’s where they’re going to post their interest meetings...and what you would need to attend in order to be able to join one of those groups.” The Multicultural Greek Council can be found on Instagram @mgc_osu and The National PanHellenic Council can be found @ okstatenphc. For Interfraternity Council Recruitment, chapters invite potential new members to events that take place in informal settings. These events typically take place in the summer so when classes resume in the fall, fraternities have their new pledge classes. The link to register

for Interfraternity Council Recruitment can be found here. The abundance of pledge classes for IFC chapters are formed in the fall, but the recruitment process is open throughout the year. The process to join a Panhellenic chapter typically begins the week before school starts in August. Potential new members register to participate in a process that gives them an insight on each of the 13 sorority chapters on campus. Through a mutual-selection process, potential new members narrow down houses throughout the week to find the specific chapter for them. The link to register for Panhellenic Formal Recruitment can be found here. Each day of the week consists of potential new members meeting

members of current chapters inside the specific chapter houses. Through one-on-one conversations, potential new members will learn about the chapter’s campus involvement, house, philanthropy events and values as the week goes on. “They do have an informal process that happens later in the year called Continuous Open Bidding,” Domnick said. “Not all of the sororities participate in that. Only about half will participate in that each semester.” Further details and additional information can be found on the Fraternity & Sorority Affairs website or Instagram @okstatefsa.

Preseason primer What to watch for in OSU’s fall camp

Stephen M. Dowell With OSU’s fall camp opening, here are some storylines to fall for the next month.

Dean Ruhl Sports Editor As Oklahoma State players shoveled Cheez-It’s into their mouths, 2021’s season wasn’t a thought in their minds. With the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, littered with tiny, orange squares, the Cowboys just wanted to celebrate another winning season. 220 days later, the Cowboys will open their fall camp Friday. OSU is a month away

from its season opener. Here’s what to follow this fall camp: Tay Martin or Brennan Presley? Who does Spencer Sanders like more? Sanders lost his two favorite targets, Tylan Wallace and Dillon Stoner, to the NFL draft, leaving two holes desperately needing to be filled. Presley impressed in the Cowboys CheezIt Bowl victory, and Martin saw considerable targets in OSU’s spring game. Sanders spoke highly of both, saying Martin’s ability to get the ball at a high point is impressive, and Presley has developed exponentially this spring. “(Presley has

developed his) IQ, just using his athletic abilities and his head at the same time,” Sanders said. “Last year, I would say it was probably a bunch of raw talent. He has already proved that much and showed that much with talent on the field with just being here only a year.” Watch for who Sanders prefers as the No. 1 receiver in 2021. Danny Godlevske’s offensive line chemistry Godlevske joins the Cowboys as a graduate transfer from Miami(OH), filling the starting center spot Ry Schneider left open. See Preseason on pg.6

Tumma’s take Breaking down OSU’s QB situation mation. The OSU fan base was keenly watching over one specific aspect of Spencer Sanders’ game in 2020: would he cut down on the turnSudeep Tumma overs? potential. On the surface, Sanders’ 14 turnovers in 11 games last season doesn’t provide much room for optimism, but there’s much more to consider. Sanders was playing — at times — behind a putrid O-line that gave him no time to drop back, survey the field and make a decision. The blocking was such an issue that he didn’t even have time to try to elude the ruuh and escape the pocket before getting pummeled. See Tumma’s on pg.6

sports 2021 position breakdown: Wide receivers

Stephen M. Dowell Brennan Presley and Tay Martin look to be the future of the Cowboys coveted position.

Chris Becker Assistant Sports Editor For the first time in three or more seasons Oklahoma State doesn’t know who its top wide receiver will be. Tylan Wallace and Dillon Stoner have both left the school for professional endeavors in the NFL. Leaving OSU offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn on the search for a new X, Y and Z-receivers. Stoner and Wallace combined for nearly 67% of receiving touchdown production and 65% of receiving yards production for the Cowboys in 2020, which provides extra large holes to fill. Wallace was the Cowboys’ goto X-receiver in 2020, and Stoner the Y-receiver role. However, the departures don’t

tell the whole story, the Cowboys still have a deep receiving core, but the group lacks experience and are unproven. At the end of the 2020 season, Tay Martin, a senior transfer from Washington State, took on the Z-receiver role, and eventually the X-receiver when Wallace was hurt. In the Cheez-It Bowl Martin had his best game of his season with six receptions and 73 yards in the Cowboys bowl game win. Dunn and coach Mike Gundy have said they hope he can take the next step and completely take over as the X-receiver, but are still unsure of who their next big name receiver will be. “We have a number of guys that we feel like should develop as the season goes on. We don’t necessarily have what would be a marquee player that we have traditionally had at that position at Oklahoma State,” Gundy said. For the slot receiver, Stoner’s replacement also was found during the Cheez-It Bowl. Brennen Presely broke out against Miami, also. Presley, like Martin, had seen a little

success prior to the bowl game, but fans couldn’t miss the 5-foot 8 inch receiver in this game. He soared for six receptions, 118 yards and three touchdowns. Presley will likely take on the lead role of the slot receiver and returner duties, but behind him are hungry freshmen eager to earn some snaps. John Paul Richardson impressed in the OSU Spring Game, who ironically wears the same number as Stoner, and could be the turn to back-up for Presley in 2021. Which leaves the Z-receiver, the third, and final, starting receiver role the other outside spot opposite the X-receiver. There’s a few names that could fill that final spot. Braydon Johnson was the Cowboys third leading receiver in 2020 hauling in 248 yards on 20 receptions. However, his spot could be taken by eager young receivers itching for the limelight. The Cowboys have Rashod Owens, the only other freshman besides Presley to catch a pass in 2020, Jayden Bray, the star of the OSU Spring game with his ability to win 50-50 balls, Bryson and Blaine

Green, the talented twin duo looking to make a name for themselves and Langston Anderson, a name that has been heard since 2019 but to no avail, to possibly fill the final starting spot. Anderson has dealt with injuries throughout his stint at OSU, and could be a name to be cautious of due to that. Anderson’s ability, although not showcased, yet, in Stillwater speaks for itself, but his injuries are product enough to believe it when it steps onto the turf. As for the other names Bryson and Blaine Greene are more than capable of taking over the outside receiver role for Dunn’s offense with their height and build. Bray, although raw, has the pass catching capabilities to find snaps for the offense. Owens, quickness and 6-foot- 2 frame could provide Spencer Sanders an explosive target anywhere on the field. The Cowboys lost more than 60% of their receiving production from last season with the loss of Wallace and Stoner, but have the bodies to fill the void they just have to develop. sports.ed@ocolly.com

sports Preseason... Continued from pg.4 Godlevske has a relationship with offensive lineman Josh Sills, who played in the same conference as Godlevske when he attended Toledo before transferring to West Virginia. Sills and Godlevske also attended many of the same camps in high school. While Sills may have chemistry with Godlevske, he might currently lack it with other lineman. Watch for how the lineman move as a unit with their new center. Malcolm Rodriguez as linebacker anchor without Amen Ogbongbemiga

Rodriguez was a leader for the linebackers in 2020 along with Ogbongbemiga and Calvin Bundage, but with both no longer playing for the Cowboys, Rodriguez becomes the anchor for the corps. Devin Harper and Lamont Bishop replace Ogbongbemiga and Bundage alongside Rodriguez. Rodriguez said whoever is playing, the discipline doesn’t change. “Just same discipline and toughness, we go out there with good game plans, whoever we’re playing,” Rodriguez said. “We just got to go out there and compete every down. As the defense we’re mature enough, we take that upon ourselves to go out there and do that.” Watch how Rodriguez continues to be a leader for the linebackers, and the defense. sports.ed@ocolly.com

Tumma... Continued from pg.4 While the stats may not support it, Sanders showed some growth and did some things better in 2020. With the addition of quarterbacks coach Tim Rattay, Sanders looked more comfortable in the pocket (when it stayed upright), his mechanics were improved and he trusted his blocking before throwing/escaping out of the pocket. Not perfect, but certainly better. Sanders’ rushing ability is obviously tantalizing, but he found a better balance between breaking out of the pocket and letting things develop down the field last season. And that led to some impressive blow-up games, including his 345-yard, four-TD performance in a Cheez-It Bowl game victory against Miami. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not excusing Sanders’ mistakes. He had some big-time moments, such as his career-high 400 passing yards and four TDs in an OT thriller vs. Texas, but also had three crucial turnovers in the same game. To me, that’s a perfect illustration of Sanders’ 2020 season. Simply put, Sanders is a gamer. He’s an uber-competitive player who wants to make every play. Now, that’s a trait coaches love to see. The challenge, however, is striking that balance. Sanders has a rocket arm and electric rushing ability — he has the physical tools to succeed. He’s shown savviness as a thrower

sports Big 12 preview: TCU Dean Ruhl Sports Editor TCU hoped to ring in the new year in Houston The Horned Frogs were slated to play Arkansas in the Texas Bowl on New Year’s Eve, a win capping off another winning season for coach Gary Patterson. TCU wouldn’t get to play the game. The Horned Frogs caught another bad break from COVID-19, which also canceled their first game against SMU. The Horned Frogs still got their winning season, finishing 6-4. Eight months later, are the Horned Frogs improved? To Patterson, yes. “We were thought of last year as being young on defense,” Patterson said. “This year we will be younger on offense, at least as far as starts and all those kind of things. So how do we grow up? Here in a couple weeks, we’ve got a month to be able to get that done.” Offensively, quarterback Max Duggan anchors the pass, and rush game for the Horned Frogs. Duggan, a junior, led the team in rushing yards with 526 and 10 touchdowns in 2020. Duggan also has been developing with his new quarterback coach. Kenny Hill, for-

mer TCU standout, was promoted to quarterback coach after Sonny Cumbie left TCU to return to his alma mater Texas Tech. “He has played for Coach P. He brings that energy and that juice in the quarterback room,” Duggan said. “He really stresses, ‘Don’t worry about the things that could happen. Just let it fly, be yourself, be confident and be a playmaker.’ That’s how he played.” A newfound confidence within Duggan will only be beneficial to the speedy skill players on TCU’s roster. Wide receiver Quentin Johnston impressed many as a freshman in 2020, averaging 22 yards per catch, for 487 yards in 10 games. A 6-foot-4 sophomore, Johnston could be looking at a breakout season. TCU also has beneficial younger players on defense. Cornerback TreVius

Hodges-Tomlinson was named to the All Big 12 Preseason Team, following a sophomore season where he was ranked by Pro Football Focus as the nation’s highest-graded cornerback in coverage. In front of him is defensive end Ochaun Mathis. A 6-foot-5 junior, Mathis tallied nine sacks and 14 tackles for loss in the Horned Frogs 10 games. A quick quarterback, speedy receivers, experienced coach and some talented defensive players, TCU is the dark horse of the Big 12 this season. “This group here really kind of came together, I think probably because they were so young,” Patterson said. “And so I don’t know how that’s going to turn out, but chemistry is a great start. The way they work is a great start. And having the quarterback back is a great start.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

Gregg Ellman With a young, talented group, TCU is the dark horse of the Big 12 in 2021.

RUNNING TO WIN! “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run...Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games (athletics) goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No. I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.” (I Co. 9:2427 NIV) The Olympic games; every 4 years. Young men and women train and train to participate and hopefully win a medal. It is a great honor to win. However, it really counts only for this life. The Apostle makes it clear that believers are in a race for a crown that is eternal. The value of crown will never end. He challenges us to run to win! A faithful Christian leader is promised “the crown of glory that will never fade away.” (1 Pet.5:4 NIV) The person who perseveres under trial “will receive the crown of life that the Lord promised to them who love him.” (Ja.1:12, Rev.2:10) This is a person that does not give up.

The Apostle said, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Tim.4:78) Therefore a crown of righteousness will be given to him at that final judgment. Yet, not only to him but to all who long for Christ’s coming. Dear ones in Christ, whether young or older, let’s run with Christ. Let’s not give up! Let’s fulfil God’s plan for our lives.. Let’s be faithful to the end. The end will be glorious!
