Monroe’s story The Dog Named After OSU Bryanna Nickel Staff Reporter Brooke Orr, a physiology junior, adopted a spunky goldendoodle in quarantine as the Spring 2020 semester came to a close. Orr said that she’s not really an animal person, but when she saw this special puppy, she knew that they were meant for each other. “I knew from the moment I saw her that we were meant for each other from the way she ran straight to me through the crowd,” Orr said. “She was a
little blonde bundle of sunshine.” Orr knew that she wanted to name her new puppy after something related to OSU. She said that she decided to name her Monroe, after Monroe St., because of the fact that it runs through the middle of campus and its special meaning to Orr. “I love walking down Monroe Street on my way to class and seeing the liveliness of Oklahoma State and running into friends as we all go our separate ways-- each on a journey of our own,” Orr said. News Monroe... Continued from pg.1 Orr’s favorite memory ironically includes Monroe getting lost one morning. “After walking around and screaming her name like a crazy person, I found her playing basketball with a group of college boys,” Orr said. Orr said that she giggled in her morning slippers, as she figured Monroe must think that she’s the next Air Bud. Orr also said that she is told by others that if she were a dog, she would be Monroe because of their many similar personality traits: a chaotic energy, a love for people and a passion for adventure. “Monroe happily plays with anyone and any dog she meets. She’s truly never met a stranger,” Orr said. “Monroe isn’t quite a year old yet, so she still has her puppy energy and spunk that I love.” When Monroe isn’t with Orr, she enjoys spending time with Orr’s roommate Reilly. Orr also said that the two have an indescribable bond. Reilly enjoys giving Monroe treats, buying Monroe new toys and even training Monroe-- she is in the process of teaching Monroe how to roll over. “Reilly treats her as if she is our third roommate,” Orr said. “Every morning when I leave for class, I let Monroe in Reilly’s room so they can have their morning cuddles.” Orr feels lucky to have a roommate that welcomes Monroe and loves her just as much as she does. Orr loves and is very proud of Monroe because of her loving, energetic personality-- now everyone knows about the spunky goldendoodle that is named after Monroe St. news.ed@ocolly.com

ONLY ONE WAY TO GOD! Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father(God) except through me .” (Jn.14:6 NIV) Peter said, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12 NIV) Paul said, “ For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men...” (1 Tim.2:56 NIV) The same essential message was declared by the major players in the New Testament Scriptures; Jesus, Peter and Paul. Jesus told his followers to go into all the world with this good news. God has made a way so mankind could be reconciled to their maker. The plan, hidden in God for centuries, now is made manifest. It is different in that it was a salvation that came from God and not man. God had done for man what was needed, but what man could not accomplish. Only God could do this..
“...God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing (charging) their trespasses unto them...” (2Co..5:19 KJV) “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly...God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Ro.5:6,8 NIV) God has done for us, what we could not do, and we are to tell everyone the good news. God freely offers you forgiveness and a new life. It is offered free only through this one who died for us and rose again. Jesus Christ is the way. He declared it while still on the earth, and those disciples who followed made the same claim. There is only one way; there is only one savior. Many are proclaiming different ways; they will prove false. Those who open their hearts to Christ, come to him and trust him will find that what God promises is real. Prove it for yourself!

Stock up, stock down Where the Big 12 sits ahead of 2021 Ian Nikkel Staff Reporter Big 12 media days wrapped up and after hearing coaches and players talk about their upcoming season, I’ve decided to provide my analysis on how I think the season will go for each team. -Oklahoma Oklahoma continues to get better as the years go on and they had two Heisman winners in the last five years. This team has something different about them. The defense is stronger led by linebacker Nik Bonitto and quarterback Spencer Rattler continues to get more comfortable. Expect the Sooners to win their seventh straight Big 12 Championship and go to the playoffs. Verdict: Stock up -Oklahoma State The key concern for Oklahoma State right now is can quarterback Spencer Sanders win with less? His top two receivers and running back have gone to the NFL, forcing new Oklahoma State talent to step up. They’re projected fourth this year and it’s probably a safe bet they match their win total of eight from last year. The Big 12 will be tougher this year, and Oklahoma State takes a very small step back this year. Verdict: Stock down -Texas Texas have a new coach in Steve Sarkisian and a new quarterback in Casey Thompson who looks better than the last one (At least in the one game he appeared in). Combined with running back Bijan Robinson, the combo is one of the scariest duos in the Big 12 and the lack of film on Thompson right now will be used to UT’s advantage early. Can it carry into November
The Big 12 has reloaded this offseason as teams hope to improve their stock.
and December? We shall see - the media has done the Texas is back song and dance before. Verdict: Stock up, but be weary -TCU The last time TCU had 10 or more wins was in 2017. Since then, the Horned Frogs have a record of 18-17 the past three years. TCU is due for a big year. Quarterback Max Duggan showed a lot of promise last year and the Horned Frogs had some very nice wins against Texas and Oklahoma State, as well as a nice three game win streak to end the season. TCU has a lot of underclassmen from last year looking to make an impact and shake up the Big 12. Verdict: Stock up -Iowa State The Big 12 is a two man race between Oklahoma and Iowa State. The Cyclones offense returns quarterback Brock Prudy and running back Breece Hall. Big 12 defensive player of the year Mike Rose returns and the hottest name in coaching
Sharon Ellman
right now, Matt Campbell enters his sixth year in Ames. ISU comes off its an impressive season with a Big 12 championship game appearance and Fiesta Bowl win over Oregon. Momentum is on their side, and it will carry into next season. Verdict: Stock up -Kansas State The Wildcats are an enigma. This could be a year they’re a dark horse, or a year they barely make a bowl game. Quarterback Skylar Thompson returns from injury after having an undisclosed upper-body surgery. Coach Chris Klieman is gritty, and enters his third year in Manhattan. Their defense is questionable, but with a lot of their offensive players returning, including running back Deuce Vaughn, they should be in around the same position they were at the beginning of this past season. Verdict: Stock holds -Baylor Baylor loses quarterback Charlie Brewer and a lot of other talent
off a 2-7 team from 2020. There’s a QB competition at the moment with three guys fighting for the job. Coach Dave Aranda is still rebuilding and the lack of experience for some of their players is detrimental. They have some good pieces with the possibility of earning a bowl game bid. Verdict: Stock down -Texas Tech This is a deciding year for coach Matt Wells and Texas Tech. Wells lured offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie back to Lubbock after six years at TCU and picked up former Oregon quarterback Tyler Shough, who started in all of Oregon’s games last year. Wells is getting his groove back in Lubbock and the Red Raiders should make a bowl game for the first time since 2017. Verdict: Stock up -West Virginia The Mountaineers went 6-4 last year, defeating Army in the Liberty Bowl to end the season with momentum. Neal Brown returns as coach with assets like running back Leddie Brown, but West Virginia won’t a big step forward. Expect six to eight wins sounds and a return to a bowl game. Verdict: Stocks holds -Kansas The Jayhawks hire coach Lance Leipold for yet another rebuild of the program after Les Miles’ failed attempt. As the program continues to bleed players via the transfer portal (KU has lost the second-most transfers this offseason, behind Tennessee), Leipold has a tough task at hand. Jayhawks fans can expect a familiar home this season - the basement of the Big 12. Verdict: Stock down sports.ed@ocolly.com

sports Safeties... Continued from pg.4 Michael Flanagan, Jason Taylor and Williams. The three primarily stick to special teams, but Taylor filled in for Harvell-Peel against Kansas State, scoring a touchdown on an 85-yard fumble recovery. Each recorded 10 or more tackles in 2020, and Flanagan ranked second on the team in kickoff tackles with five. OSU’s underclassmen will also have an impact on the team. Kendal Daniels, the No. 1 overall prospect in Oklahoma, joins the Cowboy secondary after 120 tackles, six sacks and four interceptions during his senior year at Beggs. After signing a national letter of intent to Texas A&M, Daniels decided to stay in-state, and flipped to OSU in March. OSU also added Ty Williams and Lyrik Rawls, three star recruits who saw significant time in the Cowboys spring game. Nick Session, a redshirt freshman, only played in three of OSU’s games in 2020, recording one tackle, but could see his workload increase this season. “It’s always good to have (an experienced secondary) back,” linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez said. “They’re leaders back there and so it makes our job easier out there.”

Big 12... Continued from pg.4 the SEC. We are gathering information and will monitor closely. If true, we would be gravely disappointed. “While we place a premium on history, loyalty and trust, be assured, we will aggressively defend and advance what is best for Oklahoma State and our strong athletic program, which continues to excel in the Big 12 and nationally.” A second unnamed source said the move wouldn’t happen for another three years, when the Big 12, SEC and College Football Playoff’s scheduling ends in 2025. The Sooners and Longhorns would require three-fourths of the SEC schools, or 11 of the 14, to vote in favor of the schools joining the conference to be accepted. Some SEC schools, like former Big 12 rival Texas A&M, have already voiced displeasure with the news. Ross Bjork, the Aggies athletic director was assertive on
his stance when he said he wanted TAMU to be the only Texas school in the SEC. “There’s a reason why A&M left the Big 12; the way the Big 12 was operating and the governance,” Bjork said. “A&M is a flagship university, and with the size and scale of our place, we should have our own stand-alone identity in our own conference.” It isn’t the first time the Longhorns have attempted to leave the conference. UT and A&M considered leaving for the Pac-12 before then-Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe offered higher league payouts to the conference’s schools. Following the money shows SEC schools received $44.6 million from television rights in 2020, compared to the Big 12 paying $38.3 million. With the SEC’s new partnership with ESPN worth $3 billion starting in 2025, those numbers are projected to be substantially higher. “As far as specifics, we don’t know anything about (potential additions),” Bjork said. “We haven’t been briefed on anything.” sports.ed@ocolly.com
