Keeping Stillwater Healthy Mayor Will Joyce talks about COVID concerns and a look ahead at the new school year.

With the new, more contagious, delta variant of COVID-19 surging across the nation, there is concern about a new rise in cases in Stillwater. “It is absolutely more concerning. We are trying to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed. In Stillwater last year we had a lot of cases in younger folks, with the delta variant we are seeing it affect younger people more strongly.” Stillwater Mayor Will Joyce said. After last year’s spike in cases, hospitals in Stillwater were able to operate at a higher rate and take in more people because of laws that
were passed to help fight COVID-19 at the time. Now these orders are no longer in place, hospitals are not able to function the way they were. “With all the positive activity, we are seeing rises in cases and hospitalizations. Hospitals are not able to like they were, the hospital is dealing with a staffing problem, people are exhausted and fatigued after last year. With the concern of healthcare being able to treat people, we need to do what we can to keep people healthy.” Joyce Said. Keeping everyone healthy is at the top of everyone’s mind heading into what should be the most normal school year at OSU since 2019. With full capacity at sporting events and a maskless school year, students are looking forward to the new year at OSU. But with normalcy comes
realization. For things to continue to progress and get better, people need to get vaccinated. In a town like Stillwater, everyone and everything is and has been affected by this pandemic. “If our football team has to forfeit a football game, it affects so many people, players, campus, stores, it’s a huge part of the community that gets affected. I hope people understand that.” Joyce said. It is a domino effect for the small town of Stillwater, athletic events bring in more people, which also brings in more revenue for small businesses. If those athletic events get cancelled, the town takes a huge hit. With the population of Stillwater being primarily younger people, vaccination efforts have been centered around getting younger people
vaccinated and answering any questions or concerns people may have about the vaccine. Right around the corner is a new school year for students at OSU but could we see a new mask mandate put in place this fall? “I don’t, just from a practical standpoint. Because of the changes in laws, the university and the school district are prohibited from mandating unless a statewide emergency order.” Joyce said. Instead of another mask mandate, Joyce says there is a clear solution when it comes to COVID. “Very clear solution, more people get vaccinated, it’s free and available, no reason folks shouldn’t be at least talking to their doctors about it,” Joyce said. news.ed@ocolly.com

‘Stillwater’ Review While they don’t spend much time at OSU, ‘Stillwater’ still delivers an emotional family story Ian Nikkel Staff Reporter This was my first trip to the movie theater in the post-lockdown world and I got to see a movie with my small college town in it. Imagine that. I traveled to Tulsa for an early screening of the new movie “Stillwater.” The film was directed by Tom McCarthy, who directed the Oscar-winning movie “Spotlight” in 2015. Stillwater stars Matt Damon as Bill Baker, a roughneck from Stillwater trying to get his daughter, Allison (played by Abigail Breslin) out of France where she is in prison for a murder she claims she did not commit. He travels to the city of Marseille, France, where Allison is located and meets Virginie (Camille Cottin) and her eight year old daughter Maya (Lilou Siauvaud). As Bill looks for who his daughter thinks is the alleged killer. Bill’s relationship with Allison is rocky, as Allison thinks her father is a “screw-up.” He also develops a relationship with Virginie and Maya, which is an underrated part of the movie as it adds to the emotional depth of the character. As Bill Baker gets attached to both
Virginie and Maya. It feels like his second chance of being the father he should have been with Allison. But come on, the best parts of the movie were being able to see Stillwater make its way to the silver screen. For a movie called ‘Stillwater,” they sure do spend as little time there as possible. Stillwater is the location at the beginning and the end of the movie. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some classic OSU references, though. The movie is chock-full of OSU Easter Eggs as well as references to the state of Oklahoma. In the beginning scenes, it shows Matt Damon ordering a footlong chili cheese coney with a large cherry limeade from Sonic. At one point in the movie, Matt Damon’s character talks with his daughter about how OSU will do this year in football –– though no nod to Mike Gundy or his flowing mullet made the final cut. The OSU Marching band also makes a brief appearance in the movie as well –– serving as one of the final shots in the film. Overall, it’s a solid movie that I recommend seeing. I give a 3.5 out of 5.

NEITHER DO I CONDEMN YOU! Neither do I condemn thee; precious words divine. From the lips of Jesus, comes the sweetest chimes. Wonderful words of mercy; sing them o’er and o’er. Neither do I condemn thee; Go and sin no more! (Song) These words are based on an encounter in John 8:111. A woman, caught in the act of adultery, was brought to Jesus. The law said she should be stoned. The religious said to Jesus: “what do you say? Jesus said, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” Convicted in their conscience, people began to leave. He was left alone with the woman. All the accusers had left. The only one who could have condemned her, said to her, Neither do I condemn you; go and sin no more! Christ did not come to condemn people, but to save them!!
When a Samaritan village rejected Jesus and his message, John and James wanted call down fire from heaven to judge these people. Jesus rebuked them saying “For the Son of man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” (Lu.9:5156) Jesus came to make away for all people to be free from the judgement of their sins, and give them a better place with God for eternity. The Apostle Paul said, “Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” (2Co.6:2) This is the time when God’s love and mercy is extended to all. If you have never received this free gift from God, just reach to Christ, who lives today, He will give it freely. “Whosoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21) If you have received, tell others that they might know, understand God’s love, and receive his free gift of eternal life

sports MOTOR CITY MAGIC Cunningham top pick in NBA Draft
OSU standout Cade Cunningham is headed to Detroit as the NBA’s top pick in 2021 draft.
Dean Ruhl Sports Editor Even before stepping foot on the hardwood of Eddie Sutton Court in Gallagher-Iba Arena, Cade Cunningham’s stardom was inevitable. On Thursday, the Detroit Pistons selected Cunningham with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Cunningham is the first Oklahoma State player to be selected first overall in the draft. “I’m so excited to have this hat on right now,” Cunningham said. “It’s still
pretty surreal. I know how much responsibility comes with being the No. 1 pick.” Cunningham, a topprospect since his freshman year in high school, attended OSU for one season, averaging 20.2 points per game and 6.2 assists per game. His freshman year at OSU was highlighted a 40-point game against Oklahoma and the Cowboys first Big 12 title game appearance since 2005. He also guided OSU to its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2009 against Liberty before losing to Oregon State in the second round. The Cowboys finished 11th in the Final AP Poll, their best finish since 2005. Cunningham was decorated with accolades at OSU, winning the Wayman Tisdale Award, given to the nation’s

He was also the first OSU player since Bob Kurland (1944-46) to be named a Consensus AllAmerican First Team player. Cunningham will be a cornerstone for a rebuilding Pistons team, complimenting Saddiq Bay, Isiah Stewart, Killian Hayes and Jerami Grant in Detroit. “I’m more than excited to take on the responsibilities, and try and deliver to the city of Detroit. I’m just happy to be here, and thankful for the opportunity,” Cunningham said. sports.ed@ocolly.com

Remote return Smith joins NBC as Olympic announcer Spencer Sanders expects to take a leap with his game this season.
Dean Ruhl Sports Editor Time is a valuable teacher. Or, for Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders, time, and Tim Rattay are valuable teachers. Rattay, OSU’s quarterback coach, since 2020, and has developed a strong bond with Sanders. And Sanders said he has developed exponentially with Rattay
as a mentor. “I’ve came a long way with coach Rattay this offseason,” Sanders said. “He’s helped me progress phenomenally and I can’t do nothing but thank him. We’re gonna see and I’m excited for the season.” The stock is high on Sanders this season, as he is solidified as OSU’s starter in 2021. After being named the 2019 Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year, Sanders struggled with injuries in 2020, most notably an undisclosed ankle injury he suffered in the open-

ing game against Tulsa. He finished the season throwing 2,007 yards, 14 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 62.7% completion rate. Sanders’ threat as a rush option will continue to be a factor in 2021. He has complied 897 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns in two seasons with the Cowboys. During Big 12 media days Sanders hinted at OSU attempting to get back into an Air Raid style See Quarterbacks on pg.8
Adam Engel Staff Reporter In 1990, it took current Oklahoma State coach John Smith five minutes to win his fourth of six World Wrestling titles. He quickly defeated Rosen Vasilev of Bulgaria 10-0 inside Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium — the site of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics table tennis events. In 2021, a return to Tokyo was possible for Smith. As a member of NBC’s
wrestling broadcasting crew, he could’ve sat matside at Makuhari Meese Event Hall in Chiba, Japan, an eastern Tokyo suburb, to call the games. Instead, Smith will analyze the action nearly as far away from Tokyo as one could get. The broadcasts will originate in Miami, Florida, starting July 31 at 1 a.m. CT. The NBC Olympic wrestling crew consists of Smith, Jason Knapp, and Jordan Burroughs. With a strict spectator ban placed by Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, NBC’s cast is globally split. “I think one of the problems is that with the event be-
ing tight, we’re never going to get access to the coaches or athletes because of COVID,” Smith said. Smith successfully navigated a pandemic season with OSU, and was added to NBC’s roster April 11. After working the Rio De Janeiro Games in 2016 and two Olympic trials, USA Wrestling approached their reliable ambassador once again. 2021 Big 12 preview: Kansas
Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire The Jayhawks have a new coach, but are expected to remain the Big 12 basement.
Chris Becker Assistant Sports Editor It’s not going to be pretty. Kansas for the sixth time since 2010 has a new head
coach. Lance Leipold left the University of Buffalo to take over the Jayhawk’s program after Les Miles was fired. Leipold comes to Lawrence with a stellar resume, bearing six Division III National Championships and 11 different coach of the year awards between his time at WisconsinWhitewater and Buffalo. Leipold took over the program in an abnormal situation. He was not hired until the

Jayhawks had already completed spring practice, which gives him even less time to prepare and become acquainted with the ins-and-outs of the team. “I don’t know one in recent history that it’s happened this way that you take over a program after spring football has been completed,” Leipold said. “You don’t really have any time to work with your players with football. It’s been a whirlwind in so many different ways.” Leipold has a lot of work to do to fix the Kansas football program, and it won’t come easily. Kansas is coming off an 0-9 season and has not had a winning season since 2008. In that span, the Jayhawks have won two or less games in six seasons. The Jayhawks were picked to finish last in the preseason Big 12 poll, and it won’t get easier. The Jayhawks nonconference schedule features South Dakota, Coastal Carolina and Duke, three teams vying for a win over a Big 12 team. Kansas will need to perform way above expectations to get over the .500 hump for the first time in more than a decade. sports.ed@ocolly.com

Return... Continued from pg.5 Smith admits he struggles at times. “There’s a lot of stress to it,” Smith said. “It’s not easy for me. I can’t really say that I enjoy it. I think when it’s all done, I’m really pleased with the product. But leading up to it, it can be really tricky.” When USA Wrestling contacted Smith earlier this year about the job, Smith said it was easy to say yes. He understands the challenges and nuances of pronouncing foreign names but works vigorously to perfect it. “In the end, I thought about it and just decided if I could make Olympic wrestling a better product on TV, then I should be doing it,” he said. “ It puts a little bit of responsibility on myself.” Since July 15, Smith said he has been adamantly studying proper pronunciations of about 260 Olympic wrestlers thanks to a handy guide from NBC Sports. On flashcards, he’ll write down the names of a wrestler in a way that works in his brain. “Of course, with my Oklahoma accent, I give a little twang to it and that can be a little challenging,” Smith said. “It’s just a process.” Added to the challenge of linguistics, Smith and his crew will start each broadcast at 2 a.m. because Tokyo is 13 hours ahead of the Eastern Time Zone. “It’s some long days and some long hours but it’s what you signed up to do,” he said. “You need to do a good job.” Remote broadcasts have been standard in the pandemic. All of OSU’s duals were broadcasted remotely in 2020. In Stillwater, Smith’s brother, Lee Roy Smith, provided color commentary for the duals on ESPN+ from Orange Power Studios inside Boone Pickens Stadium. “I think Lee Roy calls an event like he’s a coach,” John Smith said. “When I’m talking, I’m actually wrestling. I feel like I’m wrestling. Okay, here’s what I need to do. Here’s what he needs to do. I do it more from thinking like a wrestler.” John’s experience as a six-time world champion creates a level of mental insight that can easily educate a viewer. “The more I think as a wrestler, not as a coach, it presents the sport in a way that can hold on to a lot of people,” John Smith said. sports.ed@ocolly.com

business partner of the Big 12 Conference, has taken certain actions that are intended to not only harm the Big 12 Conference but to result in financial benefits for ESPN,” Bowlsby wrote in the letter. Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports reports Bowlsby alleges ESPN is attempting interfere with the remaining eight schools to cause an implosion of the conference. The destabilization of the conference could result in its collapse. A collapse would mean OU and Texas wouldn’t have to pay a buyout to the conference (estimated to be in the $70-$80 million range), nor the Big 12 still own the school’s media rights until 2025. “I am absolutely certain ESPN employees have discussed and provided incentives for at least one conference to raid 3-5 members from the Big 12,” Bowlsby said to Dodd. “In doing so, they are prepared to reward them with future television proceeds. If the conference goes away as an entity, Oklahoma and Texas could be relieved from their exit obligations.” Bowlsby claims ESPN is working with the American Athletic Conference to poach the remaining eight schools. ESPN released a public statement, saying “the claims in the letter have no merit.” Bowlsby’s letter comes after OU and UT formally informed the Big 12 of its intentions to not renew media rights in 2025 on Monday. The same day the schools formally notified the SEC its desire to join the conference. The SEC is expected to vote on the addition of the two schools in the coming days, with the expected outcome to be either 14-0 or 13-1 in favor of OU and UT joining. According to Brett McMurphy of Stadium, the SEC hopes to have OU and Texas as members in 2022. Bowlsby’s assertive letter shows the conference is in a fight-to-the-death situation, and one they aren’t scared to take court. The Big 12 is going to make this as difficult as they can for Oklahoma and Texas. This is the beginning of a long legal battle. “Oklahoma and Texas are going to do everything they can to get out of the grant of rights and get out of the bylaw stipulations. It’s going to be a long process,” Bowlsby told CBS Sports.
of offense. He said he was to blame for the Cowboys lack of it the past two seasons, but hopes things change. He said the decision comes down to the coaches though. “Yeah, whatever coach gives me I’m 100% down for. Whether it’s run, whether it’s pass or anything.” Sander’s progression will be a main storyline for the Cowboys in 2021, as Sanders and coach Mike Gundy have often talked about it this offseason. Gundy said in April this is the best he has seen Sanders perform at OSU. Behind Sanders on the depth chart is Shane Illingworth, who filled in for Sanders during his injuries in 2020. Illingworth threw for 554 yards and four touchdowns in four games as a freshman, promising numbers for the Cowboys future. Illingworth also gives the Cowboys options to play different styles at the position.
sports.ed@ocolly.com
Illingworth is often described as a “pro-style” passer, and Sanders a “mobile” quarterback. Don’t be surprised if OSU utilizes Illingworth in some offensive concepts he is stronger in compared to Sanders. “Illingworth is doing excellent,” Gundy said. “Shane is a really good football player with a really bright future. Our ability to change our style of play based on our quarterbacks is pretty common.” He will remain a backup this season, but if Sanders declares for the NFL draft after this season, as some experts predict, Illingworth is suitable to pilot the Cowboys in 2022. Peyton Thompson and Gunnar Gundy, son of coach Gundy, enter 2021 as freshman quarterbacks. Mike Gundy said Gunnar is in a tough situation, but he treats him like everyone else. Both received playing time in the Cowboys spring game, but aren’t expected to see the field this season. “His dad’s the coach. It’s not easy,” Mike Gundy said. “Call it like you want. Get the elephant out of the room. It’s not easy to be in his position.” sports.ed@ocolly.com
