US has no plans to send troops to Haiti amid political turmoil Tribune News Service WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden’s administration doesn’t currently plan to send military assistance to Haiti despite a request by the government for U.S. troops following the assassination of President Jovenel Moise, a senior administration official said Saturday.

Moise’s assassination has further destabilized the already fragile political structure in Haiti, where gang violence, natural disasters and the coronavirus have all taken their toll on the hemisphere’s poorest nation.

The request for U.S. troops to protect Haitian infrastructure and prepare for planned elections came during a conversation Wednesday between interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph and U.S.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The White House announced Friday it was dispatching senior FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials to Port-au-Prince.

That team will “assess the situation and how we may be able to assist,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters.

The State Department remains in regular contact with Haitian officials to discuss how the U.S. can assist, according to a department spokesman. The administration official and the spokesman both requested anonymity discussing diplomatic conversations.

Haitian police say Moise was killed by a hit team led by retired Colombian soldiers, and that they have detained 19 men in connection with the attack. It remains See Haiti on pg.3

Moise’s assassination further destabilizes the poorest nation in the Americas, which has been gripped by gang violence, kidnappings, protests and the pandemic. It hasn’t had a functioning legislature since 2020 and the head of the Supreme Court — who might have replaced Moise — recently died due to COVID-19.

Amid the request for assistance, Interim Prime Minister Joseph’s leadership position remains in doubt. Haiti’s senate, currently comprised of only a third of its usual members, nominated its head Joseph Lambert to be interim president, Reuters reported.

Joseph said Friday that he had spoken to Colombian President Ivan Duque, who had “promised full col-

laboration” in resolving the crime.

Colombian Defense Minister Diego Molano also acknowledged that the international police agency Interpol had made a formal request for information about the suspects.

At first, the raid seemed to be meticulously planned and carried out, as the heavily-armed killers pretended to be U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agents to gain access to Moise’s residence in the hills outside of Port-au-Prince. A judge who visited the scene told local media that Moise had been shot at least 12 times. Moise’s wife was also wounded, and was medically evacuated to South Florida.

But it appears their escape plan fell through. Less than 24 hours after the crime, Haiti’s police had killed a handful of suspects and rounded up others. At least two presumed mercenaries were caught by angry mobs, tied with rope and marched through the streets. Eleven others were found hiding on the grounds of the Taiwanese Embassy,

near Moise’s home.

On Thursday night, police presented the men, sitting on the floor with their hands bound behind their backs. They also showed a cache of automatic weapons, machetes, sledgehammers, radios and what appeared to be Colombian passports that they said had been taken from the group.

Local newspaper Le Nouvelliste said officials had also recovered the hard drive that stored security footage at Moise’s residence, as well as his checkbook.

One of the men Haitian police presented as an alleged member of the squad was identified as Manuel Antonio Grosso, who Colombia media said is a former paratrooper and member of the special forces. On June 6 — a month before Moise’s assassination — he posted pictures of himself on Facebook in neighboring Dominican Republic, which borders Haiti.

Prime Minister Joseph — who had been on the job for less than three months — is currently in charge of the nation of 11 million.

The head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti, Helen La Lime, has said that Joseph plans to go ahead with presidential and legislative elections in September, with a second round in November.

But Joseph’s hold on power is being challenged from several sides.

Earlier this week, Moise had named Ariel Henry to fill the prime minister’s post. While he was never sworn in, Henry told a local newspaper that he — not Joseph — is the prime minister, but said he favored dialog to keep from “igniting” the country. news.ed@ocolly.com

A faithful Christian leader is promised “the crown of glory that will never fade away.” (1 Pet.5:4 NIV) The person who perseveres under trial “will receive the crown of life that the Lord promised to them who love him.”

(Ja.1:12, Rev.2:10) This is a person that does not give up.

The Apostle said, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Tim.4:78) Therefore a crown of righteousness will be given to him at that final judgment. Yet, not only to him but to all who long for Christ’s coming.

Dear ones in Christ, whether young or older, let’s run with Christ. Let’s not give up! Let’s fulfil God’s plan for our lives.. Let’s be faithful to the end. The end will be glorious!

After Oklahoma State lost two wrestlers to the transfer portal this offseason - Jakason Burks and Daniel Jezik, the Cowboys have added a transfer to the program.

On Thursday, Austin Boone, a 157-pound wrestler, transferred to OSU after spending his freshman season at Penn State according to Seth Duckworth of Pistols Firing.

Boone won four individual state titles and four team titles at Lowell High School in Lowell, Michigan, joining former two-time NCAA champ Brent Metcalf as the only wrestlers to accomplish such a feat.

After signing to PSU as a top-40 recruit in 2020, he trained under the tutelage

of Cael Sanderson but didn’t compete in any matches.

In Stillwater, Boone immediately bolsters the depth at 157.

2021 All-American Wyatt Sheets, who is returning for his senior season, is the incumbent starter, but Boone will likely contend with Jalin Harper for the backup spot.

Harper won his four starting bouts in January after Sheets tore his left ACL. Boone will have four years of eligibility at OSU. sports.ed@ocolly.com

Colorado and Oklahoma State announced the two teams would meet in a home-and-home football series in 2036 and 2037 with the first game in Stillwater and the second game in Boulder.

The two teams have faced 47 times before, and were part of the same conference for 51 seasons, the

Big Eight and the Big 12, before Colorado moved to the Pac-12. Colorado holds a 26-20-1 advantage over the Cowboys in the all-time series, but the Cowboys have won the last three meetings.

The most recent meeting being in the 2016 Alamo Bowl where OSU won 38-8.

With the recent announcement the Cowboys have now scheduled a Power 5 opponent every season from 2022-2029 and from 2032-2037.

Those meetings are headlined with two meetings against Alabama, four meetings with Arkansas and two meetings with Nebraska. sports.ed@ocolly.com

For the sixth straight year, the Oklahoma Sooners ranked first in the Big 12 preseason poll, and for good reason. The Sooners took 35 of 39 firstplace votes, with the other four being given to Iowa State.

Steve Sarkisianled Texas placed third, and the Oklahoma State Cowboys placed fourth, a respectable spot for the Cowboys who finished the past two seasons in the same spot.

Lynch is the latest setback for OSU, and three-star Austin Kawecki remains the only lineman in the Cowboys 2022 class.

Sterling absent on Big 12 preseason team On Wednesday, the preseason Big 12 football team was released, with one name not present.

In 2020, Sterling led the team in tackles for loss with 12, ranked first in the Big 12 with two fumble recoveries and ranked second in the conference with 5.1 tackles per game.

Rodriguez, Sanders headed to Arlington for Big 12 media days Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez and quarterback Spencer Sanders will make the trip to Arlington, Texas as player representatives for OSU during the Big 12 media days on July 14-15.

Rodriguez, going into his fifth season with OSU, will be one of four linebackers at the event, with OU’s Nik Bonitto, Baylor’s Terrel Bernard and Texas Tech’s Riko Jeffers being the others.

Sanders, entering his junior year, will be one of three quarterbacks at the event.

Kansas State’s Skylar Thompson and TCU’s Max Duggan are the other two.

Coach Mike Gundy will also make the trip to Arlington with Rodriguez and Sanders.

Cowboys offer 2023 recruit Vizzina Christopher Vizzina, a 2023 quarterback from Birmingham, Alabama, received an offer from OSU on Wednesday.

Vizzina, a 6-foot4, 200-pound junior, has been labeled as a prostyle quarterback with good arm strength and the ability to be mobile.

He has a run threat and is comfortable with read options.

A three-star prospect, Vizzina has received offers from Houston, Duke, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Troy and UAB. sports.ed@ocolly.com
