Dynamic Duo Stillwater businesses and OSU work together Saara Hakanen Staff Reporter

Local companies are the experts of making a business flourish under the special circumstances that Oklahoma State University creates in Stillwater. “They are very unique in how they have to structure to accommodate students’ needs,” analyzes Jake Dyer, (a) senior at OSU. How exactly do Stillwater businesses establish and maintain the symbiotic relationship with OSU? Stillwater being a college town strongly affects its dynamic. The influence of OSU is undeniable and builds a special environment for local businesses. Regardless of some challenges, Stillwater firms and OSU benefit from See Dynamic on pg.2

News Dynamic... Continued from pg.1 each other on a daily basis. Local companies, such as B&V Body Works Gym, recognize a big portion of their clients as OSU students. That is not a surprise considering there are 24,649 OSU students in a town of 49,527 residents, which means that roughly 50% of Stillwater population are OSU students. Local businesses have to create their business plan to fulfill the needs of a college town. Body Works gym manager, Tyler Murrell, lists seasonal changes as one of their biggest challenges. “When school is out, there is a dropdown of clients because not so many students are mixed up with the regulars,” Murrell says. “Beginning of the year and before summer are always busy because people are trying to get in shape.” Dyer, however, offers a client’s perspective for a simple solution to turn around the challenges created by a college town environment. He said that targeting students is simply what companies in Stillwater should bank on.
“Small businesses also need something different to attract customers from big businesses,” Dyer argues. The fair share of students within Stillwater’s customer base indeed asks for creativity. Body Works, for example, offers flexibility for students’ hectic schedules to attract them. “We are a 24/7 gym, which has been very beneficial for students during Covid-19 because Colvin isn’t open on regular hours,” Murrell explains. Body Works’ flexible hours and special programs seem to suit OSU students well. According to Murrell, students participating in OSU powerlifting program as well as the Pom Squad are among their regular customers. In addition, Body Works offers various classes on different times throughout the week, to accommodate student’s needs and schedules. Murrell mentions Monday’s and Friday’s Zumba classes being popular among students. Among Body Works, Stillwater extrudes great examples of “something different.” Unique environment requires unique products and services that are tailored for its customers. Local specialities, such as Eskimo Joes’ famous cheese fries,
tempt curious customers to try out products outside nationwide chain companies. “I like trying new things,” Dyer says. “I prefer going to small places if I have time.” When it comes to restaurants, Dyer’s opinion is fairly common. Small places tend to have another quality that draws customers, great customer service. Body Works’ Facebook page, for example, is full of praises about the company and its staff. It is common for owners of small businesses to run the store by themselves. The smaller the business is, the more limited its resources. The staff is usually small. In a college town, students are the desired workforce. They are quick learners, full of enthusiasm, don’t require a fat paycheck and tend to have flexible schedules. Body works, too, is a workplace for one lucky OSU student. Dyer enlightens his experience in working for a small local bank. “I think that it’s much more personal for customers and employees. You’re not just a number.” Mace Metcalf, an OSU alumnus, has worked in several Stillwater businesses, such as the Links golf course and the Quarters apartment complex, while studying at OSU.
Metcalf said working at a smaller business level feels more personal, which makes work more enjoyable, too. (The) OSU community benefits from job opportunities offered by local businesses. Work experience and salary are vital for the future of thousands (of) OSU students. Along with helping students, Stillwater firms lend a helping hand for other local companies as well. “Stillwater business helped me every day at work,” says Metcalf. “Whether it was ordering parts from a company or helping out one another.” Teamwork, instead of ruthless competition, is what happens when Southern hospitality meets small town friendliness. “There were always opportunities to work with other businesses,” Metcalf concludes. Stillwater functions to suit both, local students and businesses. Cooperation enables companies to make profit, students to learn and customers to receive first-class service. To maintain this great balance in Stillwater, Metcalf reminds everyone to support their small local businesses. news.ed@ocolly.com
MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE!
God fulfilled another promise to Abraham; for he promised that through him, God would bless the whole world. Through Abraham, possibly 2500 years later, God sent his Son into the world to save and bless all who would trust in him.
We may not see how God can and will use our lives, but the challenge to “Make yourself available” is a call to all. This is the only way that you and I will see the love and faithfulness of God in reality. I can testify that he is true and faithful. Even if you stumble, make mistakes, just get up and keep going. Acknowledge your failure; He forgives, lovingly leads on into his plans for your life. You will not be sorry now and in the life to come, that you trusted and followed Christ. Make yourself available!
ALTERATIONS BY APPOINTMENT
Make yourself available; It is somewhat like the challenge God gave to Abraham. “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” (Gen.12:1 NIV) He left not knowing exactly where he was going. Yet, look at the way God used his life and produced a great legacy. Abraham moved into the land that God called him to inherit, and he dwelt there not yet owning it. Through faith and perseverance, he obtained. Four hundred years later the Israelites march in and took the land. God in his timing will give us all he has promised. Be encouraged, to “make yourself available” to God. Be practical in pursuing God, and you too will taste and see how faithful he is.

OSU’s newest president Dr. Kayse Shrum, recently sat down to talk about the importance of diversity throughout campus in a recent interview with The O’Colly. “That’s an important issue for me for my family,” Shrum said. “I
have a diverse family, so really as a mother of six children — two females, four males, three of which are African American, I really think it’s important not only for people to feel welcome but to feel valued. I think that’s what we want for everyone for anyone at Oklahoma State University.” With all the new changes being made, OSU is encouraging all students and faculty to send any comments or suggestions by June 15th to deitaskforce@okstate.edu. news.ed@ocolly.com

sports Pitch... Continued from pg.1 with “pitch”, but because of the journey they were about to embark on. With a large whiteboard, the team drew a mountain, with each game being a “pitch” of the mountain, the peak being the Women’s College World Series. Each signed the board as a commitment to the board’s purpose. The season started, and the Cowgirls began their climb. There were big moments along the way. Pitchers Carrie Eberle and Kelly Maxwell combined for a perfect game against North Texas on March 24. Kiley Naomi hit a walkoff home run against Iowa State on April 1. The news of a new softball stadium being constructed in several years broke on April 7. OSU defeated Oklahoma for the first time since 2011 on May 7 and hosted a regional and super regional in Stillwater. They reached back-to-back WCWS, and Gajewski finished with his best record (48-12) since joining OSU in 2016. “So there’s a lot of great things,” Gajewski said. “We pitched very well. Played defense well for the most part. We’re starting to look like an elite softball program and we’ll just continue to chase the standard at OSU, and that’s win championships.”
Grad Students leaving Carrie Eberle – P Alysen Febrey – 1B Reagan Wright – C Logan Simunek – P Jordan Doggett – OF The Cowgirls couldn’t scale the final pitch of the season. As OSU played Florida State on a wet field in Oklahoma City, the game being delayed hours because of rain, the Cowgirls season ended. A 4-2 loss to the Seminoles in the early hours of June 6 ended the Cowgirls hopes to reach the apex of the mountain. For some of the players, it ended their OSU careers. “It’s really tough to see these seniors play their last game because coach tells us all the time that we are not really going to remember the games,” Pennington said. “We’re going to remember these friendships and the memories and the moments that we make.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

Staff Report Oklahoma State third base coach and recruiting coordinator Marty Lees has resigned from his position with the Cowboys per Rex Holt on his radio show, The Game on 94.3.
Lees was hired at OSU, for a second stint with the Cowboys, in July of 2019. Lees had previously been with
the Cowboys as an assistant from 2013 to 2015 before taking over as head coach of Washington State. “Marty Lees is a great coach, an outstanding recruiter and a tireless worker – he is also a great friend,” coach Josh Holliday said. “He is a winner and a two-time national champion coach. We are very thankful for his contributions to the program. I wish him the best as he continues his coaching journey and pursues other opportunities.” Lees departure leaves an open paid coaching vacancy
for the Cowboys. Matt Holliday and Robin Ventura both have unpaid positions on the staff, meaning it is likely one of them will assume Lees’ spot. “I want to thank Oklahoma State for the wonderful time here in Stillwater,” Lees said. “Thank you to Coach Holder, Josh Holliday and his staff. I loved every minute with OSU. I look forward to building on this great experience as we move forward.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

2021 position breakdown Logan Carter will return to his starting role as OSU’s Cowboy back, with formidable depth behind him. Starter: Logan Carter
The only remaining Cowboy Back from 2020 to have caught a pass is in prime position to be the go to as the starter.
Chris Becker Assistant Sports Editor
Jelani Woods has taken off his Oklahoma State jersey for the final time and will now dawn a Virginia jersey. The Cowboys are now left with just Logan Carter as the lone Cowboy Back on the OSU roster to have caught a pass last season. The Cowboys, however, return Braden Cassity and Quinton Stewart from the 2020 season. Cassity, who sees a lot of time lining up in the backfield as a fullback, got solid reps catching the ball during OSU’s spring game. Coach Mike Gundy has seen the improvement of both Carter and Cassity over the course of the offseason, and is confident in the position moving forward. “Logan has been awesome, and Cassity just keeps coming along,” Gundy said. “Those guys are always going to be important to our offense. That is a position we have to be careful with health wise because of immaturity beyond those two.” The Cowboys also have 3-star junior college tight end Austin Jarrad coming in for the 2021 season, who can provide depth to the position. “Logan’s got a lot of reps, Cassity’s got some and then beyond that we have up and coming guys who don’t have any experience,” Gundy said. cess of the pass and run game. In 2020, Woods and Carter combined for 16 receptions for 213 yards and two touchdowns. However, in the run game their presence is crucial for blocking both on the line and down the field as the play progresses through the field levels. In the passing game they provide a role not only from catching occasional passes, but spacing the field and tak-
ing coverage away from other receivers allowing them to catch more passes. Although the Cowboy Backs may not break the stat sheet they have a huge impact on the offense, but the Cowboys will have to see some new faces finding their way into the rotation to fill the void left by the transfer of Jelani Woods. sports.ed@ocolly.com

Austin Jarrad
An incoming junior college transfer could provide the Cowboys with a solid pass catcher in the tight end spot.
