New places, new faces Pedersen announced as dean of Human Sciences and Education By Addie Duling A season of change has settled over the Oklahoma State campus. Changes in class settings, education delivery and even staff. Enter: Jon E Pedersen. Pedersen was recently announced to be the new dean for the College of Human Sciences and Education. Pedersen earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction-Science Education, M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction and B.S. in Agriculture-Biochemistry and Nutrition all at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is currently working as the Dean of the College of Education at the University of South Carolina. Originally from Nebraska, Pedersen is excited to get back to his Midwest roots. He and his family plan to transition to OSU in early July 2021. “My philosophy when applying for jobs is that you never leave somewhere, you always go somewhere,” Pedersen said. “OSU is a very prestigious institution, and the recently combined College of Education and Human Sciences offers such a unique perspective with all of the different departments coming together.” Pedersen’s perspective on higher education is that the focus should be on the whole child and the whole human that is learning. He feels that OSU’s recent combination of College of Education, Health and Aviation,

and the College of Human Sciences into the College of Human Sciences and Education matches this purpose that he is so passionate about. The process for hiring a new dean of a college is lengthy. Thomas Coon, who
serves as Dean of the Ferguson College of Agriculture, was head of the Search and Screening Committee who worked and helped in the process of narrowing down candidates. The Search and Screen-
ing Committee was involved in narrowing down candidates at every step of the hiring process until it reaches the final three candidates. See New on pg. 2

we’ll see how they are throughout the week, but we’re really hopeful that we can get both of them back for the next game,” Carmichael said.
Set piece success: For much of the 2020 fall soccer season, the Cowgirls struggled to convert set pieces for goals. “Well we certainly talked about it, and we’ve worked on it the last couple of days,” Carmichael said. “We showed some video about how the other team lines up for set pieces.” Against Little Rock, the trend was reversed. OSU’s first goal came eight minutes into the match when Olyvia Dowell sent a corner kick to Kim Rodriguez, who headed the ball to Grace Yochum, who put it in the back of the net. The Cowgirls took the field on Saturday against Little Rock minus two defenders: senior Charmé Morgan and freshman Mollie Breiner. Morgan started all nine games she played last season, and it was a surprise to not see her out there. “Charme picked up an injury in training last week, wasn’t quite ready to go so we didn’t dress her,” OSU coach Collin Carmichael said. Carmichael said Breiner, who “would have played big minutes for us” was out for similar reasons. “(Morgan and Breiner) were nursing a couple of injuries, and See Notebook on pg. 6
