Up in the air Resurrected juggling club bring students together

By Amelia Jauregui After a few year hiatus, The Juggling Club of Oklahoma State is back and better than ever.

Not only is the juggling club teaching the skill of juggling, but it is bringing a new and unlikely community together.

The mastermind behind The Juggling Club is freshman accounting and economics major, Samuel Oakes, who decided he would take charge of this organization’s ressurection.

Starting his juggling journey around a decade ago, Oakes now stands as Juggling Club president.

Up Continued from pg. 1 club was first established several years ago, but it kind of died off,” Oakes said. “So, I texted the guy who was in charge of it and told him I wanted to try to revitalize it, so he gave me the president position in the club. I’ve worked together with some friends and we’re trying to grow it into something that’s big and influential, to make a positive impact on campus.”

Oakes has always enjoyed juggling, and is hoping that this club will bring that same joy to other students as well.

“I learned how to juggle probably around age nine or ten,” Oakes said. “My dad gave me a book called “Juggling for The Complete Klutz” and I learned how to juggle from that book.”

Freshmen finance major, Harrison Smith, stands alongside Oakes as vice president.

“So my role in the juggling club is essentially, vice president, to come up with content for meetings and to ultimately give the people broad goals in which we can attain such as juggling in the homecoming parade or juggling at hospitals for children,” Smith said. “Giving vision. Giving vision is a huge part of the Juggling Club.”

With goals that go beyond just entertainment and learning the skill of juggling, Smith has three major takeaways from the biweekly meetings.

want people to leave with is, number one, they had a great time. Second of all, they meet great people. They now have a comprehensive network that goes throughout the whole campus,” Smith said.

“And lastly, they now have more influence because they are in the Juggling Club.”

the juggling club is the support I’ve gotten from my friends. They are so encouraging whenever I mess up,” Alaback said. “Coming in as a newcomer, it was difficult, considering I had no experience juggling but the president and vice president made me feel welcomed during the first meeting.”

President Samuel Oakes hopes to continue to grow the club as well as dive deeper into the craft of juggling.

“I want people to come away not only having a greater appreciation for the art of juggling, but also knowing that they were able to make great connections with their peers, learn a new skill they hadn’t learned before, and allow themselves to be built and motivated in a positive way. Hugs From Home OSU Moms and Dads give students a much needed break from class

By Huntyr Terry With the spring semester already half way done and midterms underway many students are beginning to get restless and are itching for a break.

However, spring break is not an option this year due to the safety precautions Oklahoma State University is taking for all students and faculty. This being the case, moms and dads of OSU students have decided to band together and spread joy to their children and peers throughout this exhausting semester by coming to campus for support and a taste of home.

On Thursday, March 11, moms from out of state and here in Oklahoma traveled to Stillwater for the tropical themed Hugs from Home event. The weather was dreary and caused concern over the turnout, but accommodations—moving the event inside—were made so students could still go to Kerr Drummond to take a break from studying. Chickfil-a and Canes gift cards were handed out, as well as mocktails, leis, pre-packaged snacks, and of course, hugs.

This is special for all students, but the out of state students especially appreciate this gesture.

“Having supportive parents come to talk to us and just hang out with us—and having the dogs [from Pete’s Posse] here—is a great opportunity for us to get out of the room and not have to worry about school work for a minute,” said Madissen

Brannon, a sophomore from Arkansas.

Another out of state student from Texas, Presleigh Adams, who was on her way to a test, said, “It’s kind of nice to just come here because I was going to study and stuff, but like I’m studied out.”

Several moms commented on how much joy it brought them to be able to provide a supportive community for college students going through these unprecedented times. Ruth Epperly, a Texas mom of a senior here at Oklahoma State said, “I love the whole concept [of this event], just being able to hug on these kids, especially from out of state. They are missing their moms [and] it’s just that y’all have been through a lot this year.”

Another mom, Dawn Ray, recalled the Hugs from Moms events from last semester and how memorable it was to see students rush up to dogs from Pete’s Posse at Theta pond. Ray continued on by saying that “When things were really hard last semester, Dena [Lewis], who is the lady who started this, [posted] on the Facebook Oklahoma State parents page saying: we need to get up there for these kids [and] hug on them, love on them, talk to them, just do whatever we can.” Ray, an in-state mom of a freshman, believes that these events are special for the kids and are a way to be there for them through these crazy times. entertainment.ed@ocolly.com

Scouting the Demon Deacons Sam Hutchens The Oklahoma State Cowgirls saw their hard work rewarded on Monday.

OSU was selected as a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament, quite an accomplishment for the team picked to finish eighth in the Big 12 preseason poll OSU will play Wake Forest, a 9-seed, in the first round of the tournament. The teams will battle for the right to, in all likelihood, take on top-seeded Stanford in the second round.

Wake Forest is making its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1988. The Cowgirls are hoping history does not repeat itself, as the ’88 Demon Deacons were victorious as a 9-seed, knocking off No. 8 Villanova.

Wake Forest sports a 12-12 overall record coming into their match with the Cowgirls. Although they play in the difficult ACC, the Demon Deacons managed to pick up wins against North Carolina, Florida State, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech — all tournament teams.

For OSU, the scouting work started right after the matchup was announced, but the Cowgirls plan to rely on the style of play that earned them an at-large bid.

“We’ll prepare for the way they play and the way we need to guard them but we’re not going to change the way we play at this point,” coach Jim Littell said. “We want to play fast paced and then we want to make sure that we play the game inside out.”

While the unpredictable nature of the tournament meant the Cowgirls are coming in with minimal knowledge of their

The Demon Deacons have five players averaging over 25 minutes a game.

Two of those players, senior forward Ivana Raca and junior forward Christina Morra, are 6-foot-2 and will probably be matched up against 6-foot-4 OSU forward Natasha Mack.

That matchup will be critical in determining the outcome of the game.

“We’ll go work on those people tonight and get a scouting report and try to get video

as quick as we can,” Littell said.

“It’s hard to predict who you’re playing so the work will come tonight.”

Wake Forest has a similar backcourt to OSU’s. Both teams have experienced veterans that are top scoring threats — junior Ja’Mee Asberry for OSU and senior Gina Conti for Wake Forest.

Freshman Jewel Spear and sophomore Alexandria Scruggs are both younger guards for Wake that have been significant contributors.

DON’T STUMBLE! (Part #1) “Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”

(Mt. 11:6) The words “fall away” are sometimes translated “offended” or “stumble.” Let me paraphrase; blessed is the man who does not stumble, get offended, or fall away because of the way I do things.

This is Jesus’ answer to a question from John the Baptist. Are you the one who should come or do we look for another? John was now in prison. He is the one who baptized Jesus and said “Behold the lamb of God.” John is the one who had given witness who Jesus was. Now John is asking, “Do we look for another?” John believed the messiah was coming, but in coming he expected him to come in a different way than Jesus came. It is so easy to stumble at God’s ways,

because his ways are not ours Notice Paul’s quotation from Isaiah: “See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that make them fall, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” (Is.8:14, 28:16 NIV) The Jewish leaders stumbled at Christ’s first coming because he did not come as they expected. They expected a conquering king, but he came as a servant in doing God’s will. (Phil.2:8) Peter almost stumbled and was very upset when Jesus began to tell his disciples what was going to happen to him: he was going to suffer.

“Never, Lord!” Peter said. He did not understand God’s plan!

Let’s be people of prayer and humility. Be open to God’s clear guidance in our lives!

“For real, I’m 100% with that,” Cunningham said.

“What’s crazy is I used to edge myself up on my hair before every game in high school. Every game. Especially when I was back at Arlington.”

While he said the haircuts he gave as a youngster may have been subpar, his skills progressed in a lucrative fashion.

“Now I feel like I’m a real good barber,” Cunningham said. “It made me a lot of money in high school for sure.”

The pop-up barber shop that doubles as Cunningham’s bathroom probably pales in comparison to most spots around town.

There is no cape or neckpaper rolls, the clippers are not cordless, and the chair doesn’t spin. While it’s not a small bathroom, Harris said it was not very big, either. And when your clientele is a Power 5 basketball team, space is at a premium.

Cunningham makes it work with the equipment he has.

“He ain’t trying to make it no hobby or nothing,” Harris said. “He’s just really, really good at it.”

Besides, the equipment is of secondary concern.

Everything needed for a good

experience is there, including the atmosphere.

“Sometimes (there is music), but sometimes we just be talking to each other — just chopping it up really,” Harris said.

After all, he said, the barbershop is where the best conversations take place.

The service is top tier as well. Anyone seeking a cut must be part of an exclusive group to make an appointment, but those who can hit Cade up have it pretty good.

“He actually is the team barber,” Harris said.

Not officially, but it’s known among the team where to go. Most players have taken advantage.

“If you need a cut, and your barber is not there you can always go to Cade,” Harris said. “And it’s actually really, really good.”

Cunningham holds an interesting place on the Cowboys. On one hand, he is just a freshman. On the other, he was swarmed with national attention and praise far before

enrolling in a college and has been looked to as a leader.

Cunningham entered the season as the No. 1 overall recruit and was billed as the top pick in what is being heralded as a stacked NBA draft class. Cunningham delivered on all that, cementing his spot at the top of NBA draft boards while winning Big 12 Player of the Year.

Even with all the accolades — and the media hype train that comes with it — Cunningham did not distract from the team in any way.

Cowboys coach Mike Boynton held a conversation with returning players about the new dynamic bringing in a superstar would present.

Boynton said he knew the type of person Cunningham was from recruiting him, but didn’t know if there would be any disruption until he was able to coach him. Minutes would be scarcer, and Cunningham would command the spotlight.

Instead of a reduction in team chemistry, Cunning-

ham’s presence has boosted the Cowboys.

“Cade eating doesn’t make anyone else starve,” Boynton said. “In fact, the more that Cade can bring to us, the more everyone has available to them.”

When the Cowboys start their NCAA Tournament journey Friday against Liberty, OSU could be enjoying Cunningham’s services for the last time. Such is the nature of March Madness.

Regardless of how his college career ends, Cade’s lasting legacy at OSU will not be that of a removed superstar focused on a potential signing bonus. He will be remembered as one of the guys.

“He’s bought so much credibility in our locker room,” Boynton said. “It’s what has made this thing work. He hasn’t sought out that attention. He’s been one of the guys.” sports.ed@ocolly.com
