A popular clothing store is relocating in hopes of bringing a fresh shopping experience to its customers.

Wooden Nickel, a staple of the Stillwater community since the 1970s, is making the move from campus corner to the former Colonial Florist building at 401 S. Washington. The move was prompted after the store sustained fire damage on Jan. 26.

Allison Keys, owner of Wooden Nickel, said the fire started a reevaluation of the business and where it was going.

“We had to go through everything and really evaluate the business as a whole,” Keys said. “We realized we weren’t maximizing the potential growth at the current location. We had grown and expanded and were really limited on space.”

Around the time of the fire, the Colonial Florist building was holding an offering period. For Keys, the timing was perfect, but the move wasn’t something she had thought about.

“We weren’t looking to move,” Keys said. “It wasn’t anything I imagined ever happening but the opportunity was there and the timing worked out with the fire. We just jumped on the opportunity.”

The new location will also provide a new opportunity for Wooden Nickel.

the store lacked the space to open up new avenues of retail. Now, the store will be able to add a new online shopping option for its customers because of the added space.

“We’ve wanted to do this for a few years, but we didn’t have a good spot in the store to have someone doing that,” Keys said. “Our backroom was extremely small, so it wasn’t a good place to have an extra person working in the store to do shipments and outgoing orders.”

Along with more space, the Wooden Nickel will have added parking.

“We have our own parking for employees and customers,” Keys said. “We have a large office, large areas for receiving and shipments, and our sale floor is doubling in space.”

Even with the move, Keys said that the transition will continue to help the Wooden Nickel improve and keep its place as a part of Stillwater. Keys said she hopes to have online shopping open in June

and plans to open the store around the start of the fall semester.

Greek community shows off talents at Varsity Revue Micah Allen @OColly

Oklahoma State University Greek Life members shined onstage in the 87th annual Varsity Revue.

“One of my favorite things about Varsity Revue is tech rehearsal where we get to see everyone else’s show,” said Gabby Woodley, director of Zeta Tau Alpha.

“It’s amazing how much talent we have in our Greek System.”

Members from eight sororities and seven fraternities competed in Varsity Revue to raise money for the charity United Way. Members performed in four evening performances Wednesday

through Saturday.

Performers spent 12-15 hours per week rehearsing for the big performances, and some of the audience said it showed.

“I thought it was great,” sophomore Bethany Howard said. “The performances were super exciting and energetic.”

Large group performance themes included “A Claus for Concern,” “Fame,” “Locked in The Library,” “Museum Mischief,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off ” and “Kissing the War Goodbye.”

Performances included large dance numbers, numerous costume changes and various songs that included their theme.

“As soon as we get paired, all of the directors get together and write down every

idea we have,” Woodley said. “Then, we go through and get down to two or three that we really like and develop them then pick the one we think is the best and go with that.”

Solo performances included renditions of popular songs like “Take Me to Church” by Hozier and “Thinking out Loud” by Ed Sheeran.

Varsity Revue met its fundraising goal of $20,000 for United Way, said Becca Henry, assistant executive director.

The shows are judged on categories such as choreography, vocals and originality.

Kappa Delta and Farmhouse placed third for their performance of “Fame,” a show about a man trying to

make it in the tough world of Broadway.

Chi Omega and Phi Gamma Delta placed second for their performance of “Locked in the Library,” a show about a librarian telling the story of two kids who are locked in the library together and discover all kinds of books.

Zeta Tau Alpha and Sigma Chi placed first for their performance of “Cruella de Vil,” a story about a woman who grew up poor but wanted to fit in and have a fur coat like all the other women she saw. She captures Dalmatians to achieve her wish.

Meal plan rollovers come with a catch for OSU students Stetson Payne @Stetson__Payne

Every semester’s end is marked by the final balance of a student’s meal plan.

Many students are trying to bring their balance below the rollover mark, and others are desperately scraping by on their last few dollars.

For a standard Bronze meal plan, worth more than $1,200, the maximum amount that can roll over into the next semester is $190. That number steadily goes up for each meal plan, up to $300 for the $2,050

Terry Baker, director of University Dining Services, said that the rollover feature is an added benefit to students because it will roll over

into summer, spring or fall semesters.

“We do have the meal plan rollover; not all universities have that,” Baker said.

“It will keep rolling over

as long as you have a meal plan.”

The money that is left unused on any meal plan over the rollover amount is sent back to University Din-

ing Services as part of their budget.

For students with meal plans, an average of $20 per student is sent back to UDS each semester, Baker said.

The total for each semester that goes back to UDS is on average a little less than $100,000.

Baker said that it’s part of UDS’s annual budget, but the organization doesn’t depend on it. “ It’s (a) very, very small portion,” Baker said. “But it is part of our budget.”

Some students feel that more money should be able to roll over each semester, or even the entire remaining balance. Brittni Foster,

a mathematics sophomore, said that the system should be changed.

“I think we should get more rollover than what is allotted for us to rollover,” Foster said. “Some people might not use all of it because maybe they’re budgeting their money really well and are saving it for next semester.

“I think they should just rollover what’s not spent.”

Brandon Windsor, an aerospace engineering sophomore, likes the system the way it is but sees the benefits in having the full rollover.

OSU alum and employee a part of OSU surpassing $1 billion campaign goal Kaelynn Knoernschild @kaelynn_k

As he stares out his office window on a brisk February morning, a devoted Oklahoma State University alum recalls highlights from his journey at OSU that hasn’t ended just yet.

While he played racquetball against Myron Rodrick, attended the 1978 wrestling match against Iowa State where the volume of fan’s cheers cracked lights in Gallagher-Iba Arena and enjoyed warm slices of pie from Hideaway Pizza during his time as an undergrad, he was making cherished memories and unknowingly falling in love with OSU. Bill Gentry’s adoration for the university led him to become a faithful OSU donor 31 years ago, and he doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.

“It’s automatic,” Gentry said. “It comes out of my paycheck every month.”

Gentry, a licensed psychologist and coordinator of the employee assistance program at OSU, refers to himself as “a shrink to the stars” and has counseled OSU employees for the last 25 years.

He’s bled orange and black since he was 18 and his love for OSU has dragged him back to Stillwater multiple times because, well, there’s no place he’d rather be.

With the exception of a small stint working for Southwestern Bell, Gentry has called the modest, simple town of Stillwater his home since 1966 when he moved onto the 10th floor of newly opened Kerr Hall.

On a mission to get more letters after his name, Gentry acquired his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate from OSU and permanently settled in Stillwater in 1989.

“All the time I’ve spent in Stillwater, I’ve never regretted it,” he said. “It’s been fun. That’s the reason my wife and I came back here to work. I had an offer from Tulsa and then I had the offer up here to start this program and it was a no-brainer.”

Gentry began donating to OSU after pledging through KOSU, a local radio station and division of NPR. “My wife’s and I’s donation, pittance that it is, started with Kelly Burly,” he said.

Waking up to NPR on his clock radio every morning, Gentry told his wife, Sonja, they should try to get their name on the radio during pledge week.

They succeeded, and they’ve been loyal donors since.

The couple also supports OSU athletics, giving where they feel funds are needed.

“We’re never going to have a football stadium named after us, so I said, ‘You know, let’s take some

more pittance of money and we’ll donate it to a sport.’”

Gentry said he and his wife reallocate their donations every so often, especially if they know about a special project underway to benefit a certain sport.

This year, the Gentrys’ donations have been set aside to support the building of the new baseball stadium.

“We just move (the donation) around to whoever needs money,” he said.

With the kickoff of the Branding Success campaign in February of 2009, Gentry said he whole-

heartedly supported the university’s efforts.

“I thought it would be kind of cool,” he said.

“You think about the Stanfords and the Harvards and their endowments are so enormous — that’s why they get by with what they do.

Well, we’re a little statesupported school, so we’re never going to have endowments like that. So, I gave. I think it’s a grand idea.”

Gentry said he didn’t alter the amount of money he was already giving to OSU but felt that because the campaign would

intertwine large and small donations, he had an opportunity to make a real difference with his contribution.

“That was the part that was exciting to me, was to say, ‘My pittance will still be there but this (campaign) may spur on some people with big checkbooks to jump in there and maybe my pittance will go toward getting some of this stuff done,” he said.

“Before he even arrived on campus, we had people making gifts to OSU because he was coming,” Jewell said. “We had a half-million dollar gift from a bank here in town for an endowed faculty position because Burns was coming here and they wanted to support Burns.”

Being a member of the Board of Regents before he was named president, Hargis had a good idea of what he had to work with once he took his place in office.

“He came in already having an understanding of what some of the opportunities were if OSU had more resources,” Jewell said. “He called me after he was selected as president, even before he got here, and said, ‘Can we meet and talk about a campaign?’ So he knew when he was interviewing for this job that OSU needed significantly more resources if it was going to do all the things that it needs to do for the state of Oklahoma.”

OSU’s previous campaign, Bringing Dreams to Life, raised $250 million, but Hargis was more audacious, proposing a goal with a ‘b’ in it, Jewell said.

“I actually proposed $2 billion and the foundation just kind of collectively fainted,” Hargis said.

Hargis hosted a series of meetings with deans to discuss what the campaign money would be used for.

The administrators concluded there were four areas needing the most attention and allotted $500 million for student scholarships, $200 million for endowed faculty positions, $200 million for construction and updates to OSU facilities and $100 million to support programs such as the OSU Alumni Association and the endowment for homecoming.

Because the university raised $1.2 billion, surpassing its original $1 billion goal, $600 million will be apportioned for student scholarships.

“We knew that student support was critical,” Hargis said. “I mean, if the MONDAY, MARCH 2, 2015

students aren’t here, none of this really works very well. We wanted to really have the resources to help students come to college, come to OSU.” Lack of increased annual funding from the state has put financial strain on the university and trickled down to students’ wallets, which have bore the brunt of the paucity of government aid.

“Since ’08, I think higher education generally is down $67, $68 million,” Hargis said. “That cut is tough, but what’s really tough is we haven’t had any increases over all these years.”

“The state is not going to be increasing funding for Oklahoma for higher education,” Jewell said.

“Even when it gives us small increases, it doesn’t keep up with the increase in cost with faculty salaries and utilities and all the various costs you have to run a university. A lot of

that difference has been made up with increased tuition.”

Because of increased tuition, student loan debt has been on the rise; however, OSU has consistently remained below the national average for student loan debt at graduation for the last five years.

Records from OSU’s Institutional Research and Information Management department reveal that from summer 2012 to spring 2013, an average OSU student’s loan debt was $22, 313, compared to the national average of $25,043.

“We’ve been able to kind of hold the line for our tuition,” Hargis said.

“It hasn’t stayed flat, but it hasn’t escalated like it has around the country.”

Gentry, a father of three, said he believes higher education costs are going to eventually bypass the middle class, and he supports the university’s

efforts to eliminate as much debt as possible for students.

“We’re looking at student debt now for my two youngest daughters, neither one of which are employed, student debt that is more than our house is worth, so the more scholarships we can give, the better off (we are),” Gentry said.

The campaign also raised enough money to add 168 endowed faculty positions, allowing OSU to hire graduate assistants and bring in speakers and host seminars, Jewell said.

Funding for a new business school and the expansion of Human Sciences, for which construction is already underway, was garnered by the campaign.

Money to partially fund OSU’s new performing arts center was also raised.

“By the end of the campaign, we had $16 million committed to the Performing Arts Center,”

Jewell said.

The goal is to additionally raise $40 to $50 million for the project, which is estimated to cost $80 million dollars, he said.

“There are people who feel like this performing arts center will do for the arts at OSU what Boone Pickens Stadium did for football,” Jewell said.

“That facility will make a huge statement about the importance of the arts at Oklahoma State University. People don’t normally think of OSU as an arts school…The fact is we have a tremendous arts program.”

Jewell said any future campaigns are at least two to three years away from launching and that the performing arts center will still be a focus.

“If Burns is still here, you can pretty well be sure (the campaign goal) is going to have a ‘b’ in it,” Jewell said.

In addition to surpass-

ing the monetary goal, the campaign also attracted a significant number of new donors.

“One of the unexpected outcomes of Branding Success is that our alumni think differently about OSU than they did before,” Jewell said.

Before the Branding Success campaign, the number of gifts of a million dollars or more OSU had received in its 115year history was less than 10, Jewell said. During the campaign, OSU received almost 120 gifts of a million dollars or more, he said.

Out of the 103,000 donors, 50,000 made their first donation to OSU. “I really think it took a leader that was willing to say, ‘This is important and we’re going to do it. I don’t care if we’ve ever done it before or not, we’re going to do it,’ and the people responded,” Jewell said.

Gentry said his reasoning for giving was simple.

“I’m loyal,” he said.

“That’s the extent of it.

“They send me a paycheck every month. They provide me with annual leave — whenever I want it, I got it. I can take it.

I’ve got sick leave. I get retirement and I get an office with windows. I get to work around really, really good people. And the people that come see me for professional services — they’re marvelous. So for all of that, I give back the pittance that I give back.

Good teams find ways to win against adversity.

The Oklahoma State Cowgirls did just that in a 47-44 win against Texas Tech on Saturday night. It was a game the Cowgirls (19-9, 9-8 Big 12) desperately needed to win to keep their dream for a NCAA Tournament bid alive, especially after an uncharacteristic loss to Texas on Wednesday knocked them down in the RPI rankings.

The game began slowpaced and sloppy with the two teams exchanging turnovers, which in effect kept

the score low. LaShawn Jones got into foul trouble early, causing Mandy Coleman to play most of the first half in her stead. Coleman finished with six points and a block.

The Cowgirls were forced later in the first half to play a lineup that hadn’t been seen much in this season after benching Roddricka Patton due to ineffectiveness and Brittney Martin for foul trouble. The lineup of Liz Donohoe, Ro Johnson, Lakota Beatty, Katelyn Loecker and Coleman was able to carry the Cowgirls into the half up 22-18 while shooting 4-of-7 from the 3-point line.

lead with about 16 minutes left in the game. After the Kansas game on Feb. 21, Martin said that at many times in the season,

the team would have just given up if it fell behind.

OSU has made strides this season with its bench play improving significantly. In

each of the Cowgirls’ wins this past month, they have had a bench player step up, whether it is Patton, Diana Omozee, Beatty or Loecker.

Saturday, Beatty raised her game with eight points and two crucial free throws late in the game.

“Yesterday, I felt I had a really good practice,” Beatty told the Cowgirl Network postgame radio show. “My number was called, so I just had to step up and make shots.”

In the final five minutes of the game, neither team was able to score with the Cowgirls leading 43-39 until Texas Tech was able to hit a couple of shots to pull within one, but Liz Donohoe hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to put the

game out of reach.

OSU finished its impromptu road trip, dubbed as the “Snowmaha” series, to Auburn, Alabama, with a 5-0 win against Western Illinois on Sunday.

Freeman dominated, throwing a no-hitter through seven innings while facing the minimum number of batters, but Erik Maki broke up Freeman’s no-hitter with an infield single with two outs in the eighth inning. Maki hit the ball weakly down the third base line, placing the ball in no-man’s-land between the pitcher and third baseman.

Freeman fielded the ball, but his throw to first was too late. The next batter, Aden Campbell, also sin-

gled off Freeman, but those were the only hits Western Illinois (0-6) could muster in the shutout.
