Fuller house COVID aftermath leaves OSU making budget cuts in student housing
Jared A’Latorre Staff Reporter For many years, Community Mentors’ (CM’s) positions have been stable, but budget cuts are changing the game. Next school year, OSU Housing and Residential Life will downsize the amount of CM’s by roughly 32% due to budget issues from the COVID-19 pandemic. Community mentors are student staff members who serve as peer mentors to provide advocacy, intervention, mentorship and support to residential students in achieving student success. The sixth inning is when it got real for OSU pitcher Justin Campbell. “Once the sixth inning hit, I was not talking to anyone,” Campbell said. “I was staying in my zone. If you looked at me, I looked like I was about to beat someone up.” Campbell threw the first 9-inning solo no-hitter for Oklahoma State baseball since 1968, when Bob Richardson did it. The Cowboy’s 19 runs, part of a 19-0 victory over the Kansas Jayhawks, were overshadowed by the tall lanky freshman from Simi Valley, California. Campbell allowed only one Jayhawk base runner on a walk in the eighth inning. He had 11 strikeouts and it only took him 99 pitches to complete the feat. “I knew something fun was going to happen when the sixth inning hit,” Campbell said.
OSU coach Josh Holliday agreed. “It was a masterpiece, it was fun to watch, it was incredible to see the joy in his eyes and his teammates’ eyes at the end of the game,”Holliday said. “He threw tons of strikes, he worked fast, he got mishit balls, he got strikeouts, he got ground balls, he got flyouts, he did it all and his team played great alongside him, defense was excellent.” Campbell didn’t roll out of the bed feeling like his arm was made of gold, but when he realized what was at stake, he performed some alchemy. “My arm wasn’t the best today, it was a little tight, nothing hurt though. I was just cruising through (the first seven innings) and then the last two innings I reached back and was feeling good, adrenaline was pumping pretty good,” Campbell said. Campbell struck out the side in the ninth inning, and the dugout exploded with teammates rushing out in celebration after the final pitch was thrown. Freshman infielder Marcus Brown, who didn’t even play in the game, led the charge, illustrating just how big the moment was for the team. See Display on pg.3

News Display... Continued from pg. 1 At the beginning of the 202021 school year, there were approximately 165 CM’s on staff. Between the 31 residential halls on campus, there will be 113 CM’s on staff in the 2021-22 school year. Dr. Leon McClinton serves as the Director of Housing and Residential Life. He said that the pandemic has been a major cause of the staff reduction. “The pandemic has caused a budget downfall and a projected decrease in occupancy, which has required our department to look at

ways to cut expenses for the upcoming year,” McClinton said. For CM’s, they will still maintain the same compensation package provided with the position. Residential halls will look different in terms of the amount of residents that CM’s will be responsible for. Wentz Hall provides community living for over 500 students with nine floors of housing. There will be eight student staff members in that hall next year. That’s estimated to be about 63 students that each CM would be responsible for. This is more than double the typical amount. Bennett Hall, another
hotspot of student living, will have 11 CM’s next year. That’s estimated to be about 55 students for each CM. The Morrison Neighborhood, home to McPherson Hall, PayneEllis Hall, Carreker East and West Halls is expected to have no student staffing at all. Even though this is the plan as of now, McClinton said that it’s a priority to have a CM present in halls all across campus. “We will make sure all of our residential communities will have a CM presence,” McClinton said. news.ed@ocolly.com

sports Display... Continued from pg. 1 Holliday made a detour on his way to the dogpile, stopping threw. Holliday presented his pitcher with the ball and a huge bear hug. “Josh came up to me with a big smile and said how great of a job I did today,” Campbell said. Campbell carried the ball all the way back to the hotel in his back pocket, and he said he plans to get a display case for it. “Hopefully when he looks at that ball it will bring back a tremendous amount of memories, and things that he experienced during the game that he will continue to use as he pitches in his career,” Holliday said. It was a joyous moment for an entire team recently plagued with injuries and close losses. “The main thing is we won,” Holliday said. “Inside of that win there was tremendous individual accomplishment, so we’re going to probably have a nice loud ride back to the hotel as I beg these kids to savor these moments together with each other before they go pass them out to the rest of the world.” Raucous bus rides and even 19-0 wins are temporary, but the moment will forever live in the memories of every Cowboy. “Some day when they’re 45 years old and maybe sitting out watching a little league one day, watching their own kids, they’re going to remember when Justin Campbell threw the no-hitter at Kansas, and that’s a pretty awesome thing they got to experience,” Holliday said.

Cowgirls lose, Sooners claim ninth consecutive Big 12 title
Dean Ruhl Sports Editor Right fielder Nicole Mendes ripped pitcher Logan Simunek’s ball to left field. Deposited into the outfield bleachers, Mendes’ home run could have ended Oklahoma State’s day halfway through the game, as the Cowgirls
teetered closer to a run-rule loss. Instead, OSU fought back - but it proved to not be enough. On Sunday, the Oklahoma Sooners defeated OSU 11-8 at Cowgirl Stadium in Stillwater. “It is what good teams do,” coach Kenny Gajewski said. “They beat you when you make those type of plays.” OU (42-2 overall, 16-1 Big 12) clinched its 9th consecutive regular season Big 12 title with the win, claiming the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament next weekend. Cowgirls... Continued from pg. 4 Mendes’ three-run home run in the third inning gave OU a 9-1 lead, putting OSU (40-8, 15-3) in danger of a run-rule loss to end the season. Instead, the Cowgirls scored six runs in the bottom frame of the inning. Shortstop Kiley Naomi hit a two-run home run, scoring herself and left fielder Chelsea Alexander to begin the inning. First baseman Alysen Febrey did the same two batters later, scoring herself and center fielder Chyenne Factor. designated player Hayley Busby and catcher Reagan Wright walked, and third baseman Sydney Pennington was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Second baseman Karli Petty drew a third walk, scoring Busby. Naomi came to the plate for the second time in the inning, also drawing a bases loaded walk to score Wright. The six runs cut OU’s lead to 9-7. The Sooners had a six-run inning of their own an inning prior. Three costly errors gave OU the opportunity to extend the inning, scoring six runs on three hits to give the Sooners a 6-0 lead early. All six of the runs were unearned to OSU pitcher Carrie Eberle.
“We rolled over in the second and gave up all those unearned runs,”
“We rolled over in the second and gave up all those unearned runs,” Gajewski said. “It was the difference in this game.” Busby scored in the bottom of the second on a Pennington single. The ball was overthrown, getting stuck in the OU dugout allowing Pennington to reach third on an error and score Busby. OU’s Tiare Jennings hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, which Busby matched in the bottom frame of the inning. OU’s final run came in the fifth when Jana Johns scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Jayda Coleman. Johns reached third base a play earlier when Eberle committed an error on a ball hit back to her. Eberle was replaced by Simunek in the third inning, but re-entered the game in the fifth inning. She finished allowing four hits, six runs, all unearned, a walk and two strikeouts. He record fell to 19-2. Simunek allowed two home runs today, after allowing only two the entire season. She finished allowing three hits, five runs, one unearned, and two walks. “She didn’t seem rocked by (the home runs),” Gajewski said. “Credit them, they make adjustments well, they’re really good hitters. She did what we needed her to do, even though she gave up runs, she stabilized us a bit. We needed that.” OU pitcher Nicole May earned her second save of the season, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing one run, Busby’s home run. She struck out four batters and was a vital part of closing out Sunday’s game. Giselle Juarez earned the win. Her record improved to 16-1. With the loss, OSU didn’t clinch the No. 1 seed in the Big 12 tournament, instead earning the No. 2 seed. “I felt like we out-played them to be very honest,” Gajewski said. “But when you make four errors and give up seven unearned runs it hurts.” sports.ed@ocolly.com
