Joanne Neiwer, a registered Democrat from Stillwater, said tightening polls have her uneasy.

“I’m just not optimistic, honestly,” Neiwer said.

“Because of what the polls are running, I’m just not optimistic. I really don’t think Hillary is going to win here.”

At a local Democratic Party social Friday, Jim Davis, an Oklahoma State University political science professor and former candidate for lieutenant governor of Oklahoma, said he was frustrated young voters

“That’s enormous,” Davis said. “Whoever is the next president will change the complexion of the court. That’s a thing that will affect the younger generation for decades to come, probably for a majority of their lives. Young people aren’t (Clinton’s) strong suit for some reason.”

Since 1964, Oklahoma has consistently voted Republican in national elections, the only exception being in 1964 when

the state’s eight (now seven) electoral college votes went to Democratic nominee Lyndon B. Johnson. Democrats in Payne County don’t expect that to change anytime soon. Davis explained why Oklahoma remains so conservative to other democrats at Friday’s social.

“Texas will go blue long before we Oklahomans do,” Davis said. “Texas has two enormous minority populations, African Americans and Latinos, that tend to vote democratic. Along with white Democrats, that could easily push Texas into the blue column soon.

“We just don’t have that significant-sized minority

population in this state.

This is paired with the fact that the oil business really dominates everything here.”

It’s a feeling Neiwer said she agrees with.

“It might take an act of God for Oklahoma to go blue,” Neiwer said. “Someday, maybe. I don’t know. It won’t happen on Tuesday, that’s for sure.”

Whatever the outcome, Tuesday will bring major changes on national, state and local levels.

Oklahomans will vote Tuesday for a president and vice president, senators and representatives, local officials, and seven state questions.

Oklahoma has voted for the Republican nominee in every presidential race since 1964 when the state voted for Democratic nominee Lyndon B. Johnson.

Guide to state questions on Oklahoma’s ballot SQ 776: Death Penalty

Under SQ 776, all methods of execution would be constitutionally allowed unless prohibited by the United States Constitution and designated by the Oklahoma legislature. It outlaws cruel or unusual punishment as outlined by the Oklahoma Constitution, but if a method of execution is declared invalid, the death penalty will still be carried out when a valid execution method is declared.

SQ 777: Agriculture

Informally known as the “Right to Farm” amendment, SQ 777 guarantees the rights to make use of agricultural technology, livestock procedures and of ranching practices. SQ 777 would disallow lawmakers from creating legislation that regulates agricultural practices.

SQ 779: Penny Sales Tax

SQ 779 increases the state sales tax 1 percent to generate funds to be allocated 69.5 percent to common school districts, 19.25 percent to Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, 3.25 percent for the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, and 8 percent to the State Department of Education. It also requires an annual audit of school districts’ use of these funds.

SQ 780: Reclassifying Crimes

Certain property crimes and simple drug possessions would be reclassified as misdemeanors under SQ 780. It increases the threshold amount from $500 to $1,000 for property crimes to be classified as a felony.

SQ 781: State Health Facilities

SQ 781 creates a fund to redistribute the money SQ 780 saves to approved mental health facilities and rehabilitation centers. This measure won’t be effective if SQ 780 doesn’t pass.

SQ 790: ‘Religious Freedom’

Informally known as the “Religious Freedom” amendment, SQ 790 repeals Article 2, Section 5 of the Oklahoma Constitution. Known as the “Blaine Amendment,” Section 5 states public property and funds cannot be used for religious purposes. The referendum comes from an Oklahoma Supreme Court ruling upholding the Ten Commandments monuments being removed from the State Capitol.

SQ 792: The Liquor Law

SQ 792 allows retailers and grocery stores to sell wine and refrigerated high-point beer seven days a week. Liquor stores would be able to sell cold full-strength beer, wine and spirits from 10 a.m. to midnight Monday-Saturday. If passed, the law would take effect Oct. 1, 2018.

“I’m active on the Gary Johnson sub-Reddit,” Davis said. “I’ve done donations, and I’ve helped with posting on social media and stuff like that.”

Davis said he supports Johnson because he is more of a realist rather than a Libertarian idealist.

“He’s a pragmatic Libertarian,” Davis said. “I like that Gary Johnson recognizes that not everything can happen overnight, and

so all of his policy positions he wants to implement over time.”

Davis said he believes Johnson is a viable candidate for the presidency, but his inability to participate in the presidential debates hurt his chances.

“I think if he’d gotten in the debates, he could have actually won the whole thing,” Davis said. “The problem is with the debates, if you don’t get into them, you’re basically done.”

Friday, November 11 North Classroom Building - 2:00 pm Ribbon Cutting Ceremony The unveiling of the wall recognizing OAMC/OSU Oklahoma Hall of Fame Inductees and the signing of the proclamation by President Hargis naming OSU a Purple Heart University, the only one in the state of Oklahoma, 25th in the nation.

OSU Pipes and Drums will perform.
