OSU vs K STATE 31 - 20

Secondary elevates Cowboys over Wildcats
Cowboys impress over Wildcats, earn rank in latest AP poll
Jaiden Daughty
Ryan Novozinsky Staff Reporter For the first two weeks of the season, it looked like OSU’s offense was at a standstill. Sure, they squeaked out victories, but putting up weak rushing numbers and an average 25.5 points against Missouri State and Tulsa was a red flag. After Saturday’s 31-20 victory over Kansas State though, the concerns about the offense should be over. Despite not scoring in the second half for the second week in a row, OSU played their best game against a ranked team and had very few problems offensively. Quarterback Spencer Sanders tossed 344 yards and had two touchdowns. Most of these yards came from wide receiver Tay Martin, who stole the show with 100 yards and a touchdown. This was Martin’s first game since missing much of the Tulsa game and the entire Boise State game with an undisclosed ankle injury. According to coach Mike Gundy, Martin stands out in a young receiving
corps. “We have young players at receiver out there and the other teams challenge them,” Gundy said. “Tay Martin is ready for that. He’s a threat out there.” OSU also had another strong game running the football. After a 218-yard performance one week ago, running back Jaylen Warren continued his hot streak, putting up 204 total yards against the Wildcats defense. These large numbers –– mixed in with the win –– are the reason OSU was ranked 19th in the latest AP Poll. Their first game as a ranked team is next week against No. 21 Baylor –– which will be an interesting test for the offense. While the run game should be in good shape against Baylor’s 73rdranked rushing defense, the receiving corps will need a player like Martin to step up again as the Bears rank 23rd in total defense and 33rd in passes intercepted. If you ask Martin though, he’s up for the challenge since being in a prominent role feels natural to him. “It just felt like I belonged there honestly being back on the field,” Martin said.

Gabriel Trevino Staff Reporter Kolby Harvell-Peel waited for the perfect moment. The Kansas State offense marched inside the Oklahoma State 25-yard line, looking to put points on the board, down by 21. Wildcat quarterback Jaren Lewis scrambled, trying desperately to avoid OSU defensive tackle Jayden Jernigan in pursuit. Lewis locked eyes with receiver Landry Weber five yards down the field, faked as if he was going to run, then directed a pass toward Weber. Harvell-Peel jumped the pass, catching a key interception with less than two minutes in the first half.
On Saturday, Peel’s interception was one of the crucial plays the Cowboys’ secondary made in their 31-20 victory over Kansas State at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater. Harvell-Peel made a momentumshifting turnover for the second game in a row. Peel remains humble, despite his critical playmaking. “Nothing special that I’m seeing,” Harvell-Peel said. “I’m just trying to do my job. I had a couple chances where I felt I should have made plays. I’m just trying to capitalize on the chances I do get to get my hands on the ball.” Other than Peel’s interception, the secondary totaled five pass breakups, including three from Jarrick Bernard-Converse on the first drive of the game. Malcolm Rodriguez believes Bernard-Converse’s crucial plays set the tone early for the rest of the game. “They’re not gonna throw the ball on us,” Rodriguez said. “Jarrick locked down their main guy. Martin returns, Cowboy offense shows life in win over Kansas State
Chris Becker Assistant Sports Editor Spencer Sanders dropped back and lobbed a pass up to the back corner of the end zone in Boone Pickens Stadium. The ball was on the way to its
destination before Sanders’ target, Tay Martin, had even gotten to the end zone yet. Martin, sent on a fade route reminiscent of Justin Blackmon’s days as a Cowboy, lifted his hands up as he got closer to the corner. The ball met him there. With 10:51 left in the first half Martin hauled in the touchdown pass from Sanders to give the Cowboys a 28-10 lead over Kansas State.

Harvell-Peel lauded OSU’s defensive line for the secondary’s success. “They just make it so much easier,” Harvell-Peel said. “When they play great, we play great in the back-end. I appreciate all those guys, and they need more love than they get.” OSU was able to rotate more defensive backs in as the game progressed and the Cowboy lead grew. Korie Black, Thomas Harper and Jabbar Muhammad each played an increased number of snaps, making significant plays on defense and special teams. Coach Mike Gundy believes the defense’s success comes from the chemistry all of the players have with each other. “This team plays more together than any team I can remember,” Gundy said. “I’m proud of the way they continue to play as a unit.”
Props to Jarrick. He’s a hard worker, he works hard in practice, I knew he was going to make plays like that.” OSU’s defense forced two turnovers, including Rodriguez’s fumble recovery in the endzone which gave the Cowboys a double-digit lead. Knowles encourages his players to keep performing at a high level. “They’re always looking for the ball, they’re hounding the ball and they’re hawking it. I feel like our guys are always on top of it when it comes to that area,” Knowles said. Coming into this game, Kansas State’s offense was rolling behind the legs of running back Deuce Vaughn. Vaughn totaled 371 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns through the first three games of KSU’s season. Knowles gave partial credit to the back-end for stopping the rush. “Deuce Vaughn is really hard to bring down,” Knowles said. “Because we were play- sports.ed@ocolly.com
Though their offense struggled to get going, there were some big playmakers that certainly could have put up some numbers tonight. The leader in rushing yards tonight was surprisingly quarterback Will Howard. Starting running back Deuce Vaughn was shut down for most of the game. He only had 22 yards rushing and averaged 1.7 yards per carry Saturday. Referees: C+ The referees did miss a couple of questionable calls. The first was a missed targeting call in the second half. He played hard and made good decisions.” The Cowboys were held scoreless for the second game in a row in the second half, despite the strong first half. The Cowboys had just 54 total yards in the third quarter, but then had 132 yards in the fourth quarter, the two lowest grossing quarters in the game. The Cowboys 481 total yards, 221 more than the Wildcats, was the most yards the offense has produced this season. “The first half was Cowboy football,” offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn said. “That’s what we wanted to do. We definitely want to do more of it. “We want to tie that into the second half somewhere along the way. Vulnerability to victory Alicia Young
Cowgirls handle Jayhawks in Sunday matinee Ben Hutchens Digital Editor
The Cowgirls couldn’t let the game settle down. In the eighth minute, Kansas Jayhawk forward Brie Servens rammed a shot past OSU freshman goalkeeper
Evie Vitali, taking a lead. The Cowgirls were down a goal the second game in a row, despite outshooting the Jayhawks to that point, and needed to get something going their way. Cowgirl junior forward Olyvia Dowell said there wasn’t much conversation after giving up the goal because her teammates already knew what needed to be done. Dowell took a ball across nearly half the field, cut to her right and fired a ball into the goal only four minutes after Serven’s goal. “(Answering KU quickly) was huge,” coach Colin Carmichael said. “If
they are able to keep that lead for 10 or 15 minutes, the game settles back down so for us to fight back immediately was massive. I’m sure they’ll be disappointed in that cause as a coach that’s what you’re trying to do after you score is just manage the next five minutes.” The five-minute window after surrendering a goal is what Dowell said she often hears coaches refer to as a team’s most vulnerable state. Dowell’s goal turned vulnerability into victory, providing a momentum boost for two more OSU goals. “That first goal is always going to shift the momentum,” Dowell said. “I
felt that kind of happened with Baylor when they scored and then we scored, and they scored. Every time you score, I feel like you get momentum right away.” Carmichael and the Cowgirls needed a win in a way they hadn’t needed one all season. They level their Big 12 record at 1-1 after a spirit-breaking loss to Baylor last Thursday. “I think it’s one of those things where you lose a game and kind of feel crappy, but when you win a game you feel like you’re on top of the world,” Dowell said. sports.ed@ocolly.com

OUR FINEST HOUR! In the beginning days of the 2nd World War, England was in terrible straits. Nazi Germany had conquered all of western Europe. Only the English channel separated England from the German army. They were being bombed relentlessly. It seemed hopeless. Prime Minister Winston Churchill challenged the people not to give up. He said, “If the British empire lasts a thousand years, may it be said; this was their finest hour.” He said, “We will fight them in the streets. We will fight them in the fields. We will fight them in the hills. We will never give up!” The British won in the end. It was their finest hour!

It is easy to think one’s finest hour is when everything seems to be going well and there is great success, however the depth of a person’s commitment and heart most likely is found during the hard times. Jesus’ eternal exaltation came not from some successful outward exploit, but “but being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death--even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name...every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” (Phil.2:8-11) The cross was his finest hour!
The apostle tells us that everything works together for good in the Christian’s life to make us more like Jesus. (Ro.8:28-29) When we have the opportunities to serve in difficult situations; when we face hard decisions and challenges and walk on with God, we are on our way to being conformed to the image of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is time to trust God’s love and faithfulness and walk with him. This hardship may be our finest hour!

New coffee king arrives

Dutch Bros is not the first coffee chain to open up a new location in Stillwater this fall. It is following a new Starbucks and Balanced location this fall alone.
Amelia Jáuregui Staff Reporter
Taking on Stillwater two lanes at a time, Dutch Bros Coffee is the town’s newest attraction. This untraditional coffee stop has a walk-up window and two-lane drive-thru and is an easy and efficient way to get that much needed caffeine fix. Opening just this past Friday, the store has already seen many Stillwater residents and is filling the parking lot it’s in with plenty of cones and local officers to help keep the line running
smoothly and orderly. While the officers are waving cars through the line, staff are rushing to and from the cars and buildings to take order and deliver the hand-crafted beverages. “”The workers were super friendly and fun and the coffee was great,” Oklahoma State junior Gabby Hentemann said. “You get a lot for what you pay for.” Unlike other coffee shops, the small at Dutch Bros Coffee is 16 oz, with a medium and large being 24 oz and 32 oz respectively. Although coffee is in the name
of this nationwide chain, coffee isn’t the only thing served on the extensive menu. In addition to the expected coffees and teas from a coffee shop, there are Dutch Bros original sodas and energy drinks, leaving the non-coffee lovers with multiple options. “I’ve never been a fan of coffee, but when I found out that Dutch Bros was more than just a coffee place, I figured I’d try it out,” OSU sophomore Sivan Auerbach said. “I had their classic Blue Rebel energy drink and I was honestly surprised by just how much I liked it.” Sophomore Maddie Meiner was
pleasantly surprised by the chai tea selection dutch bros has. “I am also not much of a coffee person, but I do love tea,” Meiner said. “I saw that there was a whole section for chai teas on the menu and so that was what I ended up going for and I will definitely be back again soon. ” Dutch Bros stillwater is located at 633 N Perkins and is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and closes at 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. entertainment.ed@ocolly.com
