Student Government Association By Chase Weems

Explained

The Student Government Association is a program that allows students to get involved in multiple facets of campus operations. Elected by their peers at Oklahoma State, it is the responsibility of members to represent their student constituency. The SGA operates in a similar manner to the federal government in that powers are separated into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. The legislative branch is made up of senators who are appointed by constituencies from multiple organizations across campus. These organizations include the Residence Hall Association, Off Campus Student Association, University Housing, and Greek Life. The SGA Student Senate has the power to recommend status for campus organizations, act upon constituency grievances through legislation, and authorize the use of part of the university’s budget. The executive branch is made up of the president, vice president, treasurer, and attorney general. The President and Vice President of the SGA are elected while other executive members are appointed with the consent of the Senate. Responsibilities allocated to the executive branch include submitting an

annual budget for Senate approval, maintaining and submitting reports of SGA financial records, and acting as a conduit for communication between students and the administration. The judicial branch is made up of the Student Supreme Court, the jurisdiction of which encompasses the SGA and participating student organizations. Similar to the federal Supreme Court, the justices are nominated by the President to oversee all cases and controversies within its jurisdiction and to review the constitutionality of SGA initiatives. Every enrolled student at OSU is eligible to vote in SGA elections. The fall elections, during which senators will be elected, take place on the second Tuesday and Wednesday of November. The president and vice president are elected during the spring elections on the second Tuesday and Wednesday of March. Polling stations will always be located outside of the Student Union, Edmon Low Library, Agriculture Hall, and Spears School of Business. Students looking to become more involved or to lobby for reform on campus can find the governing documents and contact information of SGA leadership on the OSU website. news.ede@ocolly.com

Chris Becker For the first time in nearly four years, the Oklahoma State women’s golf team will compete at Karsten Creek in an event. OSU will host the Cowgirl Classic on Thursday and Friday at its home course, and spectators will be allowed. The event will have a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. “Yeah, it’s a good opportunity for us to showcase the golf course and also for our team to get a chance to play in town,” coach Greg Robertson said.
