BIG BOY BEDLAM

Saturday’s Bedlam has the highest stakes in the series in recent memory. Two College Football Playoff hopefuls vying for a signature win. Two contenders looking to stay on track. A smothering Oklahoma State defense looks to throttle an OU offense that switched quarterbacks halfway through the season. A rivalry, in its dying moments as the Sooners prepare to join the SEC, looks for one final classic installment. It isn’t just a big game. It is BEDLAM.

Sanders, Sooner defensive line key in deciding OSU’s flow Chris Becker Assistant Sports Editor Spencer Sanders was terrorized in 2020’s addition of Bedlam. Sanders was sacked three times, chased around multiple times and threw for 97 yards against Oklahoma last season. A large part of the issue was Oklahoma State had three freshmen on the offensive line, and OU had a ferocious defensive line led by Ronnie Perkins and Nik Bonitto. In 2021, the two teams meet again, but under different circumstances. OSU’s offensive line has played better, but remains beat up, OU’s pass rush is still impressive but Sanders has shown huge strides in his game, which were absent last season. Perkins is gone, but the Sooners still have loads of talent up front. The Sooner defense has 29 sacks on the year and 83 tackles for loss, which ranks sixth in the country and second in the Big 12 behind OSU. “They’re good pass rushers. (Nik Bonitto), (Isaiah Thomas) and (Isaiah Coe), and then their backers move and they’re fast and they’ve played well,” coach Mike Gundy said. Sanders and the Cowboys offensive line will be key for the Cowboys success and in deciding the flow of the game, something that is important for Gundy in making decisions. The decisions are

even more important because of the chance the Cowboys could play OU in the Big 12 Championship game next week. But that hasn’t changed Gundy’s mindset. “So the decision that we made is just to completely consider the championship game irrelevant and a bonus,” Gundy said. “We’re business as usual. We’re not changing anything this week other than our schedule a little bit because of Thanksgiving.” The OSU game plan for Bedlam, however, has been called too conservative in the
past from fans, but Gundy said that isn’t the case. “No, we’ve been more open than we have been. Sometimes we’ve been cautious if we don’t feel like we can execute certain things,” Gundy said. “If we feel like it’s going to create negative plays. Negative plays on the offensive side of the ball are not good. “But we also, unfortunately at times, try to work with the ebb and flow of the game and manage the best we can.” The Cowboys were forced to close down the
playbook in 2020 because of the OU defensive line, but this season the Cowboys offense has played better down the stretch, has the run game to help Sanders and the offensive line to block for him. Sander has yet to play a full Bedlam game, but his focus isn’t looking back it’s on winning Saturday. “I can’t control the past, I can’t change the past, the only thing I can change is the future,” Sanders said.

Harper... Continued from 2A “You don’t try to let it affect your play,” Taylor said. “Honestly, I play the best of my ability on the field. Regardless of the circumstances. You’ve got to take what you given.” Even before his increased role in 2018, Harper made meaningful plays in his limited time. After his redshirt season, Harper primarily played on the OSU special teams in 2017. His highlight of the season came against Texas Tech, when he broke into the backfield and blocked a punt from TTU punter Dominic Panazzolo to set the Cowboys up in the red zone. With six years in the program, Harper has become a leader on the stout defensive unit. He has helped guide it into being one of the nation’s best. “He is a leader now for us,” Rodriguez said. “He is a good guy to be around. He is fast and athletic, we’ve known he has been a baller, so it is awesome to have him out there right beside me.” Coach Mike Gundy groups Harper in the same category as players like defensive end Brock Martin and safety Kolby Harvell-Peel, who are self-motivating on the field. “All those guys have been really, really good leaders, and I haven’t had

Saturday will be the 31st Bedlam coach Mike Gundy has partaken in. He has been head coach for the past 16. He quarterbacked Oklahoma State in four. He was an assistant coach for 10. Gundy has been on the sideline for more than a quarter of the Bedlam games in the series’ history. But Saturday’s game between OSU and Oklahoma will be different. It might be his last. Gundy is not planning to leave OSU, but with the Sooners accepting an invitation to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) this past summer, and a push to gain membership as early as next season or no later than 2025, the storied rivalry is in its dying moments. “I would say it is,” Gundy said. “I would say it is probably the last one (in Stillwater).” Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley has a different perspective on the rivalry continuing. Riley, who for months has been adamant about the series continuing after the Sooner leave for the SEC, stayed consistent with that thought on Tuesday. “It is a lot of teams that end up at some point in different conferences and still play a rival,” Riley said. “So, again, we all know a lot’s changing in college football. Nobody can sit up here with a crystal ball and know for sure.” It is a stark dichotomy of ideologies between the two coaches. Riley, leaving the conference sees no issue with it continuing. Gundy, spurned by the rival, is pessimistic for its future. The track record of conference rivalries continuing after a team departs isn’t encouraging. After Nebraska left for the Big 10, the Huskers and Sooners didn’t reunite on a football field until earlier this season. Texas and Texas A&M haven’t played since 2011. Kansas also hasn’t seen Missouri in a decade. With four new schools joining the Big 12 to replace the Sooners and Longhorns, Gundy said he doesn’t see how OSU would fit OU into a schedule. If the Big 12 splits into divisions, the Cowboys would play nine conference opponents, and with nonconference games scheduled years in advance, both schools would need to pay a buyout to open up a free weekend. “I don’t think it is a realistic thing that it is going to happen based on the business side of Power Five conference football in the Big 12 or the SEC,” Gundy said. Gundy, a self-proclaimed traditionalist, said he disliked when Nebraska and Missouri departed the conference in 2010, shortly followed by Colorado and Texas A&M a year later. “I didn’t like any of it,” Gundy said. “I just liked it (the old) way.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

Caleb Williams playmaking vs OSU defense
EDGE
OSU statistically has the third best total defense in the NCAA, but it has yet to play a quarterback like Caleb Williams. Williams, a true freshman, is able to make exciting plays with his arm strength and running ability. Williams may be one of the most electrifying players in college football, but after two poor performances against Baylor and Iowa State, Williams is slowing down. Under the bright lights, with 60,000 hostile OSU fans screaming at him in Boone Pickens Stadium, the Cowboy defense may be able to contain the young phenom.

For the first time since 2017, OSU has opened as favorites. 2017 was the Sooners’ first year under head coach Lincoln Riley, where they opened as 2.5 underdogs. The Baker Mayfield led Sooners went into BPS, and won in a historic 6252 shootout over the Cowboys. OSU head coach Mike Gundy’s record vs OU does not help the Cowboys odds, as the 17-year head coach only has two victories against the in-state rival. Now, as 2.5 point underdogs again, the Sooners will have to play their first game this season not being favored.

The OSU football team is highly ranked and viewed as a success. That could change if the Sooners hand the Cowboys two straight losses on their way to the greener, more lucrative pastures of the SEC. OSU losing the conference championship game against Oklahoma is only possible if OU wins the first matchup. Two OSU losses to its bitterest rival in the final weeks would end talks of glory and morph success into failure.
Would losing to OU or Baylor be worse if the Cowboys lose in the Big 12 Championship game?
Chris Becker The Cowboys have clinched a spot in the Big 12 Championship despite the outcome of Bedlam, but if OSU beats OU then they get to play Baylor again, a team they already beat 24-14 earlier in the season. If they were to lose to Baylor it would be worse than if they lost to Oklahoma because of how close it meant the Cowboys were to a playoff spot, and to lose to a team they already beat.

Forward’s journey to Stillwater from Syracuse Sam Hutchens Staff Reporter Woody Newton received a text at midnight from someone he’d never met in person. The text wasn’t creepy, in fact, it was welcoming. Newton, after all, ended up moving halfway across the country to play for the person who sent it. Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton remembers typing the message out. According to Newton, it said something like, “What’s going on big guy? You ready to come to Oklahoma State?” Newton, a sophomore guard at OSU, was in the transfer portal. He played his freshman year at Syracuse under the cloud of COVID-19, averaging 7.9 minutes and 3.5 points per game for the Orange but was looking for a new fit. Mike Boynton was there to ensure Newton stayed in orange. “I didn’t really hear from an assistant coach at all,” Newton said. “Coach Mike did all my recruiting compared to other schools. Other schools had assistants calling me but Coach Mike, from day one, he was calling me.” To Newton, Boynton’s short text sent in hours usually reserved for sleeping spoke volumes. “He could be with his kids or out on a date with his wife or something,” Newton remembered thinking. “But he’s thinking about me. It’s hard to play that many guys.” Newton is searching the internet again about OSU, this time under Boynton’s directive. “He is having me look up players stats and how they progressed,” Newton said. “He was telling me that that could be me. Stillwater businesses prepare for Black Friday Willistean Bennett Staff Reporter

Christmas parade lights up Stillwater The City of Stillwater is preparing not only for the holiday season but also, Stillwater’s Christmas Parade of Lights.
Dru Norton Staff Reporter
Collett Campbell has volunteered as the Stillwater Christmas Parade of Lights coordinator for 22 years. The parade is on Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. and begins at 9th and Main Street and travels through downtown Stillwater. Campbell said this is the first year there will be over 150,000 lights shining along Main Street in Stillwater. “The way the lights used to run in Stillwater is each individual business did their own lights,” Campbell said. “This year, there
will be many more lights all synchronized to music.” Campbell said ProValue.net, a company originating in Stillwater that providinges high-speed internet to nearby rural areas, is responsible for coordinating these lights. The City of Stillwater employees and volunteers helped put up the lights around downtown. Onlookers can turn their radio to FM 89.7 to hear Christmas music synchronized to these lights daily, from dusk until dawn. Christmas of 2020 bears a stark contrast to this year’s many Christmas events, Campbell said. “Last year, we didn’t have a Christmas parade because of coronavirus,” Campbell said. “We
had only canceled the parade one other time since 1999, and it was because of the weather.” Instead, Campbell formed a “reverse” parade. In place of a parade, spectators received a road map showing where to drive to view local businesses and homes decorated with bright Christmas lights and decorations. This year, everything returns to normal. Campbell said there will not be COVID-19 restrictions, such as enforced mask or vaccination requirements. The parade usually gets 50to 60 entries every year, Campbell said. See Christmas on 5B

OSU student stories of staying in Stillwater this holiday season
Black Friday for some is one of the most anticipated shopping days of the year, but for Stillwater merchants, the Bedlam football game can take it to a new level. Stillwater shops are preparing for sales day on Black Friday, but that’s not the only thing that will attract people into stores. The Bedlam game next day can usher in shoppers. Store owners have different ways of dealing with one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Sharon Sample is the manager of For Pete’s Sake, an Oklahoma State apparel and gifts store. Shoppers who visit For Pete’s Sake on Black Friday can enter into a drawing for a chance of getting 15% to 50% off select items. Sample said t-shirts are a popular item during the sale with both University of Oklahoma and OSU fans buying them. “We have a lot of couples where one’s OU and the other’s OSU and that’s fun seeing the rivalry, and everybody’s always glad to say that’s one’s one and one’s the other,” Sample said. Hunter Smith is the owner of Stillwater Summit Co., an outdoor gear shop aimed to bring the Colorado feel to the middle of Stillwater. Smith is expecting the store’s projected sales to be 10-15,000 during this year’s Black Friday weekend, and a large crowd compared to last year. Bedlam will play a huge part alongside Black Friday for these sales. “It’s massive, anytime there’s a game and it’s a little colder out, our sales go through the roof,” Smith said. Crystal Wintle is the manager of District Bicycles, and does not participate in Black Friday to avoid competition with larger stores and to encourage customers to get outside. “We just want our customers to enjoy the day and get outside to ride their bikes,” Wintle said. news.ed@ocolly.com

SGA Senate changing its constitution Teyte Holcomb Staff Reporter
On Wednesday, Oklahoma State’s Student Government Association (SGA) met for the final time this semester to discuss several bills that were introduced. Though the meeting covered many bills and amendments to the SGA Constitution, a heavily debated topic among senators was bill F21Bl007. This bill would “amend the structure of the communications department,” which would in turn consolidate the communication process in regard to elections and everyday business. After discussion, the bill was proposed with added amendments. The final vote was 17-3, with the majority voting to pass the bill. Though the bill was passed, some students said they don’t think there will be much of a difference. Claire Stolfa said she feels like this added bill was unnecessary. “From what I know about the bill, it kinda doesn’t seem like it will overhaul much,” Stolfa
said. “I’m definitely curious to see how this will hopefully improve the communications department within SGA and maybe other parts of the university.” Although this bill stirred conversation among SGA senate members, many of the bills introduced were widely adopted among individuals. Senate bill F21Bl001 aims at “amending motions in Title I” of the SGA constitution. One of the things this bill does is prohibit any senate member from directly voting on a bill that would “financially” affect them personally. The bill passed unanimously among senate members. Some students at OSU said they hope this bill makes a difference. Chase Parker, a junior at Oklahoma State, said he wants to see these issues changed in SGA. “I think it’s really cool to see SGA trying to do things to be as fair as possible,” Parker said. “This bill passing shows that OSU’s SGA is taking their role seriously within the student community. The night continued
with the introduction of bill after bill; many of which were passed without much hesitation. While some bills were lighter in material, others aimed to change parts of the SGA constitution. One main discussion throughout the night was the revision of Title X in the SGA constitution. This revision would change elections, as well as shorten campaigns. The main purpose of these revisions is to make sure there are “no loopholes” while running for office. After debate and discussion among senate members, the bill passed with 22 votes. As the fall semester is beginning to wrap up, SGA senate members proposed and discussed bills that could potentially affect the spring semester. Though the meeting covered many technical bills and amendments altering how things were done in OSU’s SGA, some proposed ideas to help improve the quality of life for OSU students in the coming semester.

Donating during the holiday season Rachel Williamson Staff Reporter This week, turkeys and hams are being crammed into the fridge to thaw and some people roll out the dough to make pies in every flavor. However, there are Oklahomans this holiday who are wondering where their next meal will come from. Before the pandemic, Oklahoma was the fifthhungriest state, according to the Oklahoma State’s Extension. Out of the population of about 4 million, nearly 600,000 Oklahomans do not know where their next meal will come from, according to Feeding America. College students are not exempt from hunger. Nearly half of OSU students are food insecure, according to a 2018 OSU graduate survey. More than one in five children in Oklahoma do not get enough to eat and 60% of students qualify for free or reduced school lunches. Three-quarters of Tulsa Public Schools students qualify and over 90% of Oklahoma City Public Schools students qualify for these lunch programs, according to Hunger Free Oklahoma. Over 600,000 Oklahomans are on federal nutrition assistance programs such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Women, Infants and Children (WIC), according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Although this assistance may help, some may still go hungry. Since April 2020, a third more of Oklahomans have found themselves facing hunger for the first time, according to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. Janice Hermann, an OSU Extension nutrition specialist, said before donating items people should do things like asking about the organizations guidelines and community profile, or considering offering to donating deliveries or rides Some may choose to donate items to food banks to help other in need. Feeding America recommends donating peanut butter, canned fish or chicken and canned beans and stews. For those in need in the Stillwater area, visit the Our Daily Bread food bank. For students and faculty, the SGA has the Pete’s Pantry food bank set up on the second floor of the Student Union.

Taco the town Ted’s to open first Stillwater location
Courtesy of Ted’s press release Ted’s Tacos and Cantina will open its fourth location next spring in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The store is located at 502 N Main Street and will serve specialty tacos, including The Wet Taco, and drinks.
Ellen Slater Lifestyle Editor With packed tables and wait lists being a weekly occurrence at many of the Stillwater Mexican restaurants, it can be assumed Stillwater-ites are always in the market for a new Mexican joint. Ted’s is famous in Oklahoma terms- and the state-wide chain’s newest location is going to be in
Stillwater. “It’s been a goal of ours for a very long time to find a home in Stillwater and serve the amazing community there,” said David Foxx, Ted’s Chief Operations Officer. “It’s an incredible town that we’re eager to open our doors up next spring.” Ted’s is familiar to many students coming from Oklahoma City because that is where its flagship store is located. The location that is opening in Stillwater will operate under a slightly different name- Ted’s Tacos and Cantina. Despite the name change, the fast-casual concept will be operated by the same people behind Ted’s Cafe Escondido. It will be located at 502 N Main St., standing less than a mile from Boone Pickens Stadium and
Oklahoma State’s campus. “Whether you’re looking to pick up food for the family or get drinks with your friends, Ted’s Tacos and Cantina is truly a place for everyone,” Foxx said. “Our team is thrilled we will be able to bring this fun, new concept to the Stillwater area.” The Cantina has plans to feature two happy hours during the day. One will be in the late afternoon and another an hour before close. Plus, happy hour runs all day every Sunday. If plans go accordingly, the doors will open next spring.

THE GIFT OF GOD!
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Ro.6:23 NIV) “...all have sinned...” (Ro.3:23) Everyone has sinned and the payoff is death; eternal separation from God; a lake of fire. No matter how you paint it, it is a terrible, eternal state of being. The Bible talks of those who “because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath.” (Ro.2:5 NIV) Those who, with a hard heart, resist and reject God’s help; only store up their terrible wages for the judgment day to come. It is so important to consider and act on God’s love gift. The gift of God is eternal life. At the age of 12 years, my wife heard about God’s free gift of eternal life. In fact, the person sharing with a group of young people had a picture of a gift box with a big, colorful bow on top. God was offering her, that day, this gift, and she stepped out and received it. You see it is a gift. You can’t do enough to earn it, but you must receive it.
This gift is found in one place (person); in Jesus Christ. It is found nowhere else. You only access God through Christ. (Jn.14:6) You need to trust God’s word and turn to Christ, ask and receive his free gift of eternal life. What is included in this eternal gift? You receive the forgiveness of all your sins; they are never to be remembered by God. (Col.1:14, Heb.8:12) You also receive a new life; you are born of God. (Jn.1:12) As you continue to trust in Christ, he will work in and through you his very life given freely to you. When you leave this life in physical death, you will go into his presence forever.
