OSU vs. OU 37-33 Cowboys in unfamiliar territory after instant classic Bedlam game
Alicia Young
Cowboys had usurped Oklahoma 37-33, winning the lopsided series for the first time since 2014 for in-state authority, and set themselves up to accomplish something they’ve not done in a decade. Win a conference title. Dean Ruhl OSU will have a quick transition into the championship game, slated to Sports Editor be played Saturday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The rare triumph couldn’t keep “Obviously I haven’t done it Oklahoma State fans off the field. before, so what I told them Saturday is As students and alumni poured the same thing I’ve told them, because it onto the Boone Pickens Stadium field, is one week,” OSU coach Mike Gundy risking the 8-foot drop, the Cowboys said. “So they enjoy this, go out with found themselves in uncharted territory. your family, eat dinner with girlfriends In sole possession of first place in the or whatever.” Big 12 at the end of the regular season, The victory over OU not only preparing to battle for a conference title keeps the Sooners out of the Big 12 and in the hunt for a College Football Championship Game for the first time Playoff berth. since it was reinstated in 2017 but halts In an instant classic game, the a second Bedlam from happening in
Texas. Instead, OSU will challenge Baylor (10-2 overall, 7-2 Big 12). The two schools have each claimed conference championships outright in the past (OSU in 2011 and Baylor in 2013 and 2014), but never competed in the championship game to date. That will change this Saturday. The current Baylor squad is a far cry from not only the two-win team OSU walloped this past season, but also from the team OSU played a mere seven weeks ago. “You can watch them on film and they’re not the same football team,” offensive lineman Josh Sills said. “They’ve gotten a lot better up front; you know blitzing and that kind of thing. So going into this game, you’ve got to have an open mind.” Since the Bears’ loss to OSU in
early October, they’ve rattled off wins against BYU, Oklahoma and Kansas State, each by two scores. Outside of a misstep against TCU, the Bears have controlled games behind the running back tandem of Abram Smith and Trestan Ebner. They status of BU quarterback Gerry Bohanon is still unknown, after he suffered a right hamstring injury against Kansas State. The goal remains the same for the Cowboys as it has all season – claim a Big 12 title. They’ve staved off inner demons to put them in position to accomplish this, the most significant being the win of OU. “Beat Baylor to get into the playoffs,” linebacker Devin Harper said. “That is our goal.”

When Devin Harper hounded after Caleb Williams, cutting through the cold lateNovember in a sprint to tackle the Oklahoma quarterback, he thought about a warmer time. “All I could think about was the long days we put in in the summer,” Harper, a senior linebacker, said. “Remembering Coach Knowles always telling us
to fight to the end.” At that moment, with 1:20 remaining in the game and thoughts of tough training camps popped into Harper’s mind, the end was near. Of the play, the game, and maybe OSU’s College Football playoff hopes. Harper followed Knowles’ advice. Fight until the end. Oklahoma State beat Oklahoma 37-33. A reason the score held was the aforementioned play Harper made on the Sooner’s potential game-tying drive.

Fight... Continued from 1 Williams took the snap from OSU territory, the ball reached him in the shotgun at 1:29. Nine seconds later, the shifty quarterback was still dancing around looking for an open receiver to complete the fourth-and-10 he was faced with. Instead of an open receiver, Williams was met with open grass. He took off, but so did Harper. The OSU linebacker dove, entangling his arms with William’s churning legs. Thirteen seconds after he started his scramble, Williams stumbled and fell short of the line-to-gain. “This is his year,” coach Mike Gundy said. “And he came back he has worked hard. He has never complained. And he has really grown
into his own and had a good year. He can run.” No. 7 OSU (11-1) sacked No. 10 OU (10-2) six times in the game that determined the Sooners’ postseason fate. There were other plays like Harper’s that added up to what was a bombardment of Cowboy defensive linemen muddying up the pocket that white-clad Sooner offensive linemen tried to form for Williams. The Cowboys pressure did not always show on the stat sheet. Williams, after all, dealt with the firestorm of pressure admirably. “We may have had six sacks but we may have missed another six,” Knowles said. “Their quarterback was really tough to bring down. He had a major impact on the game.” The most pertinent of example of Williams’ escaping prowess came with 0:48 remaining. After a drop back, he sidestepped an oncoming Cowboy in the pocket and bolted.
Instead of taking a sack that would cripple any chance of a comeback, Williams scampered down the sideline testing the ankles of OSU defensive backs and gaining 56 yards. “I said this in in there to the team, he is a slippery good player,” Gundy said. Knowles said it was in his nature to send more rushers at Williams to help get him to the ground. Instead, with OU’s receiving corps plaguing the secondary, Knowles relied on his front to step up. “I wanted to add more pressure but I felt the right play was to not put our DB’s in one on one situations,” Knowles said. Even without extra men, the pressure applied by the constantly rotating cast of defensive lineman and veteran linebackers remained a constant that could not be dodged forever. Freshman defensive end Colin Oliver got the final of OSU’s six
sacks, and it came on a four-man rush. Oliver beat sophomore Sooner left tackle Anton Harrison around the edge with a speed move. Oliver was pushed to the ground but crawled like an army cadet through a barbed wiretopped mud pit toward Williams. “(Oliver) did great,” senior linebacker Malcom Rodriguez said. “He had sacks, making plays. To be a freshman coming in and making plays like that, it’s huge.” Oliver pulled Williams down by his ankles, ending the game and pulling the conference crown away from an Oklahoma team that had won six straight Big 12 championships. “We just kept coming after him,” Rodriguez said. “Kept dialing up blitzes and things like that. Coach Knowles did a good job.”

THE GIFT OF GOD!

“...all have sinned...” (Ro.3:23) Everyone has sinned and the payoff is death; eternal separation from God; a lake of fire. No matter how you paint it, it is a terrible, eternal state of being. The Bible talks of those who “because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath.” (Ro.2:5 NIV) Those who, with a hard heart, resist and reject God’s help; only store up their terrible wages for the judgment day to come. It is so important to consider and act on God’s love gift. The gift of God is eternal life. At the age of 12 years, my wife heard about God’s free gift of eternal life. In fact, the person sharing with a group of young people had a picture of a gift box with a big, colorful bow on top. God was offering her, that day, this gift, and she stepped out and received it. You see it is a gift. You can’t do enough to earn it, but you must receive it.
This gift is found in one place (person); in Jesus Christ. It is found nowhere else. You only access God through Christ. (Jn.14:6) You need to trust God’s word and turn to Christ, ask and receive his free gift of eternal life. What is included in this eternal gift? You receive the forgiveness of all your sins; they are never to be remembered by God. (Col.1:14, Heb.8:12) You also receive a new life; you are born of God. (Jn.1:12) As you continue to trust in Christ, he will work in and through you his very life given freely to you. When you leave this life in physical death, you will go into his presence forever. Strong mind, strong words
Presley, Cowboys remain steady in Bedlam
Alicia Young
Ben Hutchens Digital Editor Brennan Presley induced two very different sounds from the 54,990 gathered in Boone Pickens Stadium on Saturday night. Presley’s up-and-down night encapsulated a wild ride of a game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners that can be most accurately be described as a game full of bedlam. The Cowboys defeated the Sooners 37-33, a score in large part influenced by the sophomore
wide receiver Presley. Presley caught a kickoff two yards in the end zone at the beginning of the second quarter and found a seam down the right side of the OU coverage. Then he dropped his left hand. “Once (Presley) drops that left hand you’re not catching him,” OSU quarterback Spencer Sanders said. “Once he strides out, he’s gone.” Presley’s gallop drew a jubilant roar from thousands of orange-clad fans who had just watched the Sooners go on a 75-yard touchdown drive. The return gave the Cowboys a touchdown lead they would soon squander at the hands of Presley. A messy OSU sequence
early in the third quarter put the crowd’s jubilant roar far from memory and visions of the last six bedlams in the forefront. Backed up at their own 8-yard line, the Cowboys handed the ball to sophomore running back Dominic Richardson, who fumbled the ball into the end zone where it was fallen on by senior nose guard Perrion Winfrey for an OU safety. The Sooners were shut down on the offensive possession the safety earned and punted to Presley who stood at the 8-yard line…and backed up to make the catch. Coach Mike Gundy said an emphasis has been placed on return men not backpedaling past the 8-yard line to field a punt, but Presley
got caught up in the heat of the moment. “Brennan has made hundreds of plays in special teams over the last five, six years here and at Bixby (HS),” Gundy said. “He has done it over and over and over so he is trying to make a play. He thinks he can change the game and that’s why we brought him here.” Presley changed the game, but unlike many of his returns for the Bixby Spartans, the ball fell through his hands and was recovered for a touchdown by the Sooners. A communal groan was heard in the stadium as the OU lead extended to nine. Sanders said the mistake weighed heavy on Presley. Cowboy receiver Tay Martin said one of the many people to
tell Presley to not lose focus was former OSU receiver Dez Bryant, who was honored during the game. “BP is a strong-minded guy, so I never had any doubts that he was going to lose confidence,” Martin said. Presley and the Cowboys regained focus. A fourth quarter shutout by the vaunted OSU defense opened the door for 13 unanswered Cowboy points. Presley also caught three balls for 40 yards. “(Presley) played his heart out tonight and he was really down on himself for dropping that punt, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter. He made up for it and is an excellent player,” Sanders said. sports.ed@ocolly.com
