Gavin Stika has filled in for the injured Cowboy over the previous weeks and is set to assume the role for the remainder
of the year. Stika is 1-4 in duals so far. Ferrari is ineligible for a medical redshirt. Ferrari’s absence leaves room for a tight team title race at the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments. Stephen Buchanan, Wyoming’s 197-pound All-American, is now a favorite for a Big 12 title. sports.ed@ocolly.com
Fierro wins individual honors, Cowgirls finish third at Columbia Classic
Chris Becker Editor in Chief Another tournament, another individual winner for Oklahoma State women’s golf team. Isabella Fierro was in contention throughout the 54-hole Columbia Classic held in Melbourne, Florida. Fierro, who led most of the final round, found herself in second place with three holes to play. Fierro needed to make a move heading to hole one at Duran Golf Club, her 16th hole of the day. She did just that with a birdie. She entered the clubhouse with the lead, and the lead remained hers as the field filed their cards. Fierro carded a 2-under par and grabbed individual honors for the event. The Cowgirls have now won five individual events this season. As a team the No. 2 Cowgirls floated around the lead throughout the twoday event, but could never hold for long. No. 26 Virginia Tech and No. 30 Texas Tech gave the Cowgirls all they could handle in a highly contested tournament. When the dust settled the Cowgirls turned in a 20-over-par team score, which earned them third place honors. Texas Tech finished second and Virginia Tech captured the team trophy with a score of 16-over-par. Maddison Hinson-Tolchard followed up her previous win with a tie for 10th finish at 5-over-par. A back nine where she shot 4-over, took Tolchard out of contention, but she remained in the top-10. The remaining Cowgirls shot as follows: Lianna Bailey, 7-over-par (T-15) Clemence Martin, 10-over (T-22 Rina Tatematsu, 19-over (T48) sports.ed@ocolly.com
Isabella Fierro won the Columbia Classic on Monday at 2-under-par.

Adam Luther Zach Esposito during the No. 11 Oklahoma State vs. South Dakota State wrestling dual on January 31, 2020 at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater.
Q&A: Esposito talks Stillwater, singlets and Russia Adam Engel Staff Reporter
Zack Esposito won four team national championships and a 149-pound title as an Oklahoma State Cowboy from 2002-2006. He has served as a Cowboy wrestling assistant coach since 2012. In 2017, he was promoted to associate head coach. Q: You graduated from OSU in 2007 and started coaching three years later. You are raising your family here. What is the attraction to this community and university? A: “It’s a very home-like community. It’s very family-oriented. It’s funny, because your kids play football and it’s the same kids on the wrestling team. Same kids on the baseball team. Traffic is great. You get to spend more time with your kids. I can be home in
WHEN IS LITTLE MUCH?
There is a short chorus that has encouraged me many times. “Little is much if God is in it. Labor not for wealth or fame. There’s a crown and you can win it. If you go in Jesus’ name.” The woman, who poured the precious ointment on Jesus just before he was crucified, was criticized for “wasting” this expensive item. Yet, Jesus said everywhere the gospel is preached this woman’s action would be told. (Mk 14:3-9) Little things mean a lot as we are willing to serve the Lord. Paul mentions many in Romans 16 who helped him. The Good Samaritan stopped to help the man beaten and robbed. (Lu.10:30-37) Paul writes as you have opportunity, do good to all men, especially to other believers.(Gal.6:10) When the poor widow dropped the two pennies, all that she had, into the temple offering. Jesus said she gave more the large offerings given. Her “large giving” was in relation to what she had. (Mk.12:41-44)
10 minutes. I can be at the gym in 10 minutes. It’s a really motivating environment especially when you work in an athletic department. Softball is ranked third, baseball is ranked seventh, men’s basketball just beat the No. 1 team in the country and wrestling has a tradition. Football had an awesome year. You know all these coaches and that vibe of striving for excellence bounces off each other. For me as a parent, to have my kids around is really exciting because they’re around motivated people. Maybe coming from a big city that can get drowned out. We got it all in just one little town.” Q: How do your relationships with these coaches influence the sense of community? A: “I love that Stillwater and Oklahoma still has a strict work ethic and moral code of you don’t get something for nothing. You gotta earn it. That’s what I love about it. You’re as successful as your work ethic you put in. You love to see the other coaches recognize that too. You just love that your family and you are constantly reminded of it. You just gotta go earn it. I love the fact that people appreci-
ate your effort in this town. As much as the fans and the town want to see you win, they know that you’re working. They know that you’re pursuing excellence and I feel like there’s a little bit of compassion in this town compared to other places.” Q: Outside of wrestling, what is your favorite OSU sporting event to watch? A: “I love going to all of them. We would go to all the football games. When I was in college, we went to a lot of basketball games. I’ll still get to go to those. Softball here recently. Being in the outfield and being able to get rowdy there. I really got into watching baseball just because of being around coaches like Matt Holliday and those guys. It makes me think that when I get old and retire, I don’t think I could retire outside of a college town. I want to go to everything. I would’ve never went to a tennis match. Now all of a sudden, I’m going. Our tennis coach is in our wrestling room watching practice and we’re going over there. Now, I’m like, ‘I wanna get my daughter into tennis.’ It’s really cool to see that.” Q: What is your favorite OSU
wrestling singlet? A: “Oh, the traditional (orange). Always. Just knowing that Pat Smith won that same singlet to be the first four-time national champ. That traditional singlet is powerful. I know that the kids like other designs. They like other stuff, but nothing can beat that traditional one.” Q: What has been one of your favorite places to travel for wrestling? A: “I always loved going to Russia. Scenery and stuff, it’s not always the greatest but just to see these people love the sport. They create the sport. I think that’s the coolest thing. When you got to go to Russia, you see the creativity of moves and creativity to training. I just loved when I went over there because there’s just Olympic champs walking around everywhere. I love the fact that it reminds you there’s a lot to the sport of winning and at the same time, what keeps you going into it is the learning.”

Many people may plan to give when they receive a great amount of money, but that large amount of money may never come. We may plan to give time or talent to a project when we have more time, but that perfect time arrangement may never happen. Again, the apostle Paul encourages us “as you have opportunity, do good to all men.” We never know when a little gesture of kindness, with money, or helping in an area of service, spending a little time with a person, a word of encouragement, will be just the action that will be a great help to someone. These can be practical ways of living out the Lord’s challenge to love one another. This is the fulfilling of the many commandments in the Bible: loving people by word and action.

OSU research shows rare beetle creates antibiotic
Courtesy of OSU Ag Research This American burying beetle’s saliva has the potential to create a natural antibiotic, OSU researchers said.
Rachel Williamson Staff Reporter have discovered the way a rare beetle feeds its offspring shows potential to create a natural antibiotic. Leading the research is Dr. Wyatt Hoback, an entomology and plant pathology professor. He has been studying and conserving these beetles for over 20 years, and now he’s focusing on the medical potential of American Burying Beetle saliva by collaborating with the biochemistry and molecular biology and animal and food science departments. “This collaboration combines ecology, microbiology and genomics,” Hoback said. “That way we can figure out how to just concentrate on the material that we want, versus spraying our
carcasses with beetle secretions.” The beetle’s name, the burying beetle, comes from the way it feeds its offspring. Hoback said these large beetles are capable of burying small mammals such as rats and squirrels. Once the beetles get the carcass buried, they use their saliva to preserve the meat for their offspring. “These beetles bury an animal carcass, because their babies eat meat, kind of fresh meat,” Hoback said. “They’ve buried things at room temperature. So we are researching how the beetles use their own biology which is some saliva, some enzymes, to help slow down decomposition.” The American burying beetles can work in teams to get carcasses moved and buried. “Two American burying beetles working with their heads can bury
something the size of a Volkswagen Bug in a couple of hours in loose soil,” Hoback said. “They’re amazing. if an animal is dead on the road they’ll actually move it six to nine feet just by kind of shuffling it along over their bodies.” Hoback explained that these carnivorous beetles also carry around their own microbiome “in their guts” to place on the animal carcass to compete with the other microorganisms that are trying to decompose the meat. The end result is meat that is preserved at room temperature for weeks. “For us, it gives us potential for new sources of antibiotics, or maybe a way to preserve meat at room temperature,” Hoback said. “Many parts of the world don’t have refrigeration. If we can figure out the chemistry, then we have a way to develop a product for humans without actually having to coat
our meat in burying beetle secretions.” Although the research is still in the early stages, Hoback said once the researchers narrow down which microorganisms the burying beetles are using, then the project can move forward with developing preservatives and antibiotics. “Once we identify which microbes are present, we can identify their properties and figure out how they’re keeping all these other species from taking over the carcass,” said Hoback. “Then, we’ll have the next penicillin or terramycin or one of these classes of compounds that can directly help humans.”

Wii would like to play in 2022 Payton Little Staff Reporter Nintendo had a presentation Feb. 9, 2022 to discuss new releases for the upcoming year. Those that grew up playing the Wii are absolutely winning as switch owners today, as many titles that were announced harken back to those days. Here are a handful of titles Wii fans can anticipate to now be played on switch. “Mario Strikers: Battle League” It has been 15 years since the last Mario Strikers entry was made, dating back to “Mario Strikers Charged” on the Wii. “Mario Strikers” is basically soccer with Mario characters, except the intensity is ramped up. There are no red cards or penalties in this world, so feel free to slam people into electric fences, throw giant turtle shells at your opponents or kick a flaming ball at the goalie. All of this is being brought back into the limelight in glorious HD graphics, new characters and stat altering armor mechanics. Look for “Mario Strikers: Battle League” to come out June 10, 2022. “Klonoa Phantasy Reverie” series While this series did not make its debut on the Wii, a port of the original PS1 cult classic came to the system during its prime. Klonoa is an action platformer revolving around a strange animal that many have debated on just what it is. While it is unclear what kind of animal Klonoa is, he is on a mission to defeat an evil being that is attempting to turn the entire world into nightmares. This game appears to not be a port of the original “Klonoa” games, but instead, a remaster from the ground up. Those craving that classic platforming era of the 90s can expect Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series to drop on July 8th, 2022 “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” The original “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” released across multiple platforms on Sept. 16, 2008, and one of those systems was of course the Nintendo Wii. “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” follows Darth Vader’s

secret apprentice, Starkiller, and his missions in following Vader’s orders. What makes the version that is being transitioned to Switch so special is that it is bringing back the Wii’s intuitive motion control force abilities.
