dent of Oklahoma State, had a ribbon cutting ceremony last Thursday, for the new Hargis Leadership Institute. At the ceremony, plenty of treats were provided. There was free pizza, popsicles, and OSU merchandise for students to grab as they listened to the speeches made by Josh Taylor, Hargis, and President Kayse Shrum. On top of the speakers, there was a live DJ playing music, cornhole and other fun

party games laid out for students to play with. Asides from the fun, students were able to learn about the purpose of the Hargis Leadership Institute. Taylor, who will be running the institute, said its mission is to develop life-giving community leaders. “We want to provide access to leadership development for every single student,” Taylor said.

Everyone on campus has access to the leadership institute, which includes all of the clubs and organizations who wish to be aligned with it. The intention is to not have everyone and organizations to be under its umbrella, but to partner with different colleges across campus.

There were not any Chicago police officers or Neo-Nazis chasing after it like in the 1980 film “Blues Brothers,” but that does not mean it lacked authenticity. Original cast member Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi, brother of John, who also starred in the film, arrived at the Bud Brothers Coughy Shop on Hall of Fame Avenue to promote their new cannabis strain on Monday. They have promoted this new product across the country this past year. Before they arrived, a Blues Brothers tribute band from Texas entertained the crowd with songs, jokes and games. When Aykroyd and Belushi exited the Bluesmobile, they welcomed the crowd of hundreds by singing their famous songs. After performing hit songs such as “Soul Man,” Aykroyd and Belushi went in the store, signed autographs, took pictures with fans and told them about the benefits of their product. Monte Lode, manager of Bud Brothers, said this was an important event for his store – which opened in early 2021. “We wanted them to reach out and come and meet our patients,” Lode told the Stillwater Newspress. news.ed@ocolly.com

Halloween horror movie picks

Courtesy of Brooke Palmer

10 great fright flicks from 2020-21

Jim Harrington The Mercury News

There has been no shortage of scares over the last couple of years. Most of them, of course, came from the real world — as COVID-19 put all of us, to some degree or another, in very real danger. Yet, there’s also been a fair share of spooky things coming from the movie world. And those are the type of ones we’re looking for during the Halloween season. Much of the entertainment industry was shut down for over a year due to the pandemic, yet the horror film machine just kept right on pumping out ghastly good offerings during that time period. Indeed, 2020 and 2021 have been great years for horror releases — some of which hit the big screens (often the driveins) and others went straight to streaming platforms. Here is a look at 10 of our favorite releases from the past two years. All of them are widely available to stream/ rent/purchase right now. So, pick one (or all 10) and have yourself a happy Halloween! ‘Freaky’ Nobody is doing better work these days in the horrorcomedy genre than Christopher Landon. Having given the world the wonderful “Happy Death Day” and the solid sequel “Happy Death Day 2U” — which are both built on a “Groundhog Day”-esque storyline — the director hits another one out of the park with this film that can be con-

sidered a kind of horror movie version of “Freaky Friday.” Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton are brilliant as a serial killer and high school student who end up switching bodies through the usual dark evil spell mumbo-jumbo. ‘The Wretched’ It’s a chilling supernatural horror film, with a few scenes — is that a monster crawling out of that deer carcass? — which could end up keeping you up at night. The film stars John-Paul Howard as Ben Shaw, who suspects that there is something wrong going on with his neighbors. (Spoiler alert: He’s right.) “The Wretched” is truly a movie that lives up to its name, yet in all the right ways, and it’s highly recommended for anyone who likes witch stories. ‘Becky’ Wait a second – a horror movie starring Kevin James? Kevin James from those goofy “Zookeeper” and “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” flicks and “The King of Queens” TV sitcom? Yes, that Kevin James. And he’s very convincing in his cinematic turn to the dark side, playing an ex-con who might just have bitten off more than he can chew when he tangles with 13-year-old Becky (Lulu Wilson) in this home invasion tale. ‘Spiral’ “Saw” has been one of horror’s most consistently entertaining franchises, beginning with the stone-cold classic first film in 2004 and continuing through several well-directed sequels. This 2021 offering is a worthy addition to the legacy as well

as a plausible reboot, delivering plenty of new avenues to further explore in the “Saw” storyline for years to come. Chris Rock stars in the film and adds a sense of humor to the mix — something that the franchise has never really had before. ‘The Toll’ How safe are you really when you jump into that rideshare vehicle? You might be thinking twice about using an app to arrange your next ride after seeing this Canadian thriller, which tells the story of a woman who simply needs a lift from the airport to see her father one late night and instead ends up on a nightmare journey involving a supernatural creature known as the “Toll Man.” (Note: This is not to be confused with the 2021 film of the same name starring Michael Smiley.) ‘Gaia’ Two forest rangers encounter more than they bargained for when they enter into the woods in this entirely engrossing South African eco-horror film, which had its world premiere at the South by Southwest film festival in 2021. One of the rangers runs across two survivalists — a father and son, who are living way, way off the grid — but it becomes increasingly hard to survive as some kind of evil draws steadily closer. The movie’s folklore-horror vibe should please fans of “Midsommar” and “The Witch.” ‘Separation’ Rupert Friend — whose spin as CIA operative Peter Quinn helped make the Showtime political thriller

“Homeland” one of the best TV shows of all time — is on top of his game in the role of graphic novel artist Jeff Vahn, who must battle dark forces in order to save his daughter. The jumping off point of the film is a bad marriage and impending divorce, and the horror that follows serves to underscore how damaging these situations can be for the children. ‘Till Death’ We loved Megan Fox in the 2009 horror-comedy “Jennifer’s Body” and then managed to go 10-plus years without seeing her in another movie. (We’re not “Transformers” fans and somehow managed to miss 2016’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.”) Yet, we’re back on the Fox bandwagon after catching the actress in this (quite literally) chilling survival tale of a wedding anniversary celebration gone oh-so very wrong. Feel free to join us, but note that the bandwagon is already getting crowded with all the people cheering Fox on for this “comeback” role. ‘Come Play’ This is the movie that affirms all of those parental fears about kids spending way too much time on their iPads, smart phones and other screens. So, in other words, kids might want to persuade their parents to watch something else lest they face some stiff screen-time limitations, because this chilling release tells the tale of a monster that preys on a young boy through his smart device. Yes, in this movie, there’s an app for that. ‘Willy’s Wonderland’ Let’s just state the obvi-

ous here: Nicolas Cage has been the single greatest thing about the movie business over the past few years, always coming across as pure, unadulterated Nicolas Cage no matter what a particular role calls for. He once again shines brightly, in a very stoic kind of way, in this delightfully ridiculous movie that could lead to nightmares for all of us who grew up celebrating our birthdays at Chuck E. Cheese. Bonus pick: ‘Malignant’ James Wan is the greatest — and certainly most successful – horror filmmaker of his generation, having masterminded the “Saw,” “Conjuring” and “Insidious” franchises. The director has yet another winner on his hands with “Malignant,” which takes viewers on a thrill ride of unexpected twists, convincing scares and over-the-top action as it unravels the tale of a troubled woman and the mounting number of gruesome deaths surrounding her. “Malignant” isn’t widely available to stream, but we’re still including it on our list because it’s the best horror movie of the last two years. It was released simultaneously in theaters and HBO Max earlier this fall, although it’s since been pulled from the Max. “Malignant” will reportedly be available for digital purchase beginning on Oct. 22, with Blu-ray and DVD versions to follow on Nov. 30. But keep your eyes open for its return to streaming at some point.

Winners and losers Baylor atop ranks after Week 7

Ashton Slaughter Staff Reporter After a slower week of Big 12 football with only three games played, the conference had a full slate of games in Week 7. Every Big 12 team other than West Virginia suited up this past weekend, meaning that fans got to see a lot of teams who played well and who didn’t. Week seven had a ranked matchup, a new starting quarterback for OU, an out-of-conference game with BYU, and another Kansas blowout. With all that being said, let’s see who the winners and losers of this past week were. 9: Kansas – Lost 41-14 against Texas Tech Another weekend, another Kansas blowout. This has (once again) become the unfortunate reality for the Jayhawks and their fans, as this is their fifth loss in a row of 21 or more points.

Abby Cage

Coming into the game against an up-and-down Texas Tech team, who’s gone 2-2 over their last four games, they probably felt somewhat motivated coming into the game, knowing that they could possibly pull off an upset. If that motivation existed, it wasn’t seen on the field, as the Jayhawks didn’t score any points until under a minute left in the game. Out of the Jayhawks 273 total yards, 110 of those yards came on their last two garbage time drives. These yards can heavily be attributed to Miles Kendrick, the backup quarterback, who entered the game late and played well for the Jayhawks. He had 82 total yards, making an impact in both the passing and rushing game, averaging 11.3 yards per carry and throwing the two Jayhawks touchdowns . Other than Kendrick, there weren’t many other bright spots in this game for the Jayhawks, as the Red Raiders completely and utterly outplayed them. However, they may have found themselves a new quarterback...

only time will tell. One thing is for certain though, the next two weeks don’t look great for the Jayhawks– playing Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. 8: Kansas State – Lost 33-20 against Iowa State Kansas State has had a polar opposite first and second half of their season so far. After starting off 3-0, they’ve now slid to 3-3, after losing to Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and now Iowa State. The Cyclones simply outplayed the Wildcats, as after a late first quarter touchdown for KSU, they went on a 17-0 run, until the Wildcats scored again in the fourth quarter. On the Wildcats three offensive drives during this run, they only had 52 yards of offense. To make matters worse, their first drive during the run ended in a missed field goal, which turned into a Cyclone touchdown on the ensuing drive. Not only did the Wildcats underperform on the offensive side of the ball, but their defense couldn’t hold strong either. Breece Hall torched the

Wildcats defense, as he rushed for 197 yards and two touchdowns. The Cyclone passing offense also did a number on them, as Brock Purdy threw for 208 yards as well. The Wildcats will hope to end their losing streak on the road in Lubbock, as their season needs to get back on track sooner rather than later. 7: TCU – Lost 52-31 against Oklahoma TCU didn’t play awful this game. In fact, they played relatively well. They scored at least seven points in every quarter, their quarterback, Max Duggan, played great, and they only had one turnover (as did Oklahoma). However, everything that they did was outmatched by the Sooners. For example, Duggan threw for 346 yards and four touchdowns, along with 45 yards on the ground, but was still outshined by Caleb Williams.

Scouting report Thompson is serious shot creator Sudeep Tumma Staff Reporter

File Photo

It was almost two years ago when OSU fans were elated with the addition of No. 1 prospect Cade Cunningham. But soon after that, the hype funneled into a hope Cunningham’s presence would help rope in 5-star guard Bryce Thompson to Stillwater. Well, now he’s here. Thompson, who ultimately chose to go to Kansas, had a rough freshman season for the Jayhawks. It was an injury-riddled season for a player who had high expectations coming into the year. Still, the young guard from Tulsa has gobs of talent and is sure to flourish under coach Mike Boynton. The scouting report Before we get into anything, we have to acknowledge Thompson’s physical tools. The 6-foot-5, 195-point combo guard has solid size and length coupled with impressive leaping ability. He is by no means the fastest guy on the floor, but he’s an abovethe-rim athlete who’s capable of some highlight-reel plays. With the Jayhawks, we saw Thompson tear it up in the midrange. Whether it was off a dribble drive or in the pick-and-roll game, he showed off his skill. Thompson would navigate to his spots, pull up off the dribble and sink those mid-range jumpers. Thompson possesses a sweet jumper with a high-release point, which makes it difficult to block. He’s able to contort his body and hit difficult off-balance jumpers. Then in the open court, Thompson has excellent instincts in the transition game. Again, not the fastest guy, but he just knows when to unclip and streak toward the other side of the court. But perhaps most enticing, however, is Thompson’s IQ and feel for the game. He always makes sound deci-

sions with the ball in his hands. And he’s a decent passer with good vision who’s able to find teammates when he’s double-teamed. Thompson was a stud in the mid-range, but he also found success attacking the rim. He displayed tremendous footwork and didn’t shy away from contact. Thompson exhibited strong body control and hang time with a savvy floater in his arsenal. There’s a lot to like, but one aspect Thompson will look to hone in on is finishing with his left hand. Thompson displays the ability to dribble with either hand, but he had a propensity to always go back to his right when finishing, which constricts how effective he could be as a scorer. Then there’s the obvious one — the 3-point shooting. It’s almost head-scratching. Thompson came out of high school with the reputation of a three-level scorer who averaged 24.6 points as a senior. And one who certainly could stroke it from deep. But as Thompson could only muster up a disheartening 22.2% mark on his 3-pointers, there were still flashes — especially early on. Thompson always had active hands, ready to catch and shoot with no hesitation. He hit a couple of 3-pointers off the dribble. Some of those triples were netted off a slick step back, which is one of my personal favorites of his. Again, there were flashes, but the 3-point shooting remains a question mark. But on the other side, Thompson fit in seamlessly with defensive-centric Kansas coach Bill Self. You’ve got to love Thompson’s defensive intensity. He’s always in his stance, moving his feet. With his on-ball defense, he displays great lateral quickness and active hands to stick with his man. And if Thompson’s man gets a step on him, he uses his length and vertical to contest everything. In Self’s defensive scheme, Thompson got a taste of playing zone defense. He also got the chance to be part of a defense that switched everything and appeared pretty good in it. See Scouting on 8

Winners... Continued from 4 Emari Demercado, the Horned Frogs leading rusher, averaged 8.1 yards per carry, but was still outshined by Kennedy Brooks. The whole Horned Frogs offense was, as although they were consistently scoring and put up a respectable 31 points, simply couldn’t match the Sooners offense led by Williams. To highlight this, the Horned Frogs had three three-and-outs on offense, as the pace and consistency of the Sooners was too much to overcome. The Horned Frogs now fall to 3-3, as they’ve lost three of their last four games. They will now be back home in Fort Worth to face off against the Mountaineers, who are coming off a bye week, as both teams are hoping to gain some much needed momentum. 6: Texas Tech – Won 41-14 against Kansas Although Texas Tech won in blowout fashion, they are low on the list because of who they played– which is the worst team in the conference. This has hurt a couple of teams on these lists, as although they have completely outperformed their opponent, their positioning isn’t higher because Kansas is that opponent. With that being said, the Red Raiders did play well, as they shutout the Jayhawks until the last minute of the game. In other words, they did their job and executed very well. The rushing attack for the Red Raiders was the main highlight, as 244 yards and four touchdowns came from rushing. They had a very balanced rushing game though, as SaRodrick Thompson was the leading rusher with 83 yards, and four different players rushed for a touchdown. The Red Raiders took care of business, as they hope to get back on track after going 2-2 the past four weeks. Their next matchup will be against Kansas State in Lubbock. 5: Texas – Lost 32-24 against Oklahoma State Texas looked like they had bounced back. Coming off a loss against Oklahoma, where Caleb Williams and the Sooners shocked the Longhorns and came back, fans were wondering how the Longhorns would respond. The answer at first, was quite well, as the Longhorns started off the game with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped off by a running back Bijan

Robinson touchdown. Then they went up 17-3 midway through the second quarter, and were looking to go up three possessions, before safety Jason Taylor II jumped a quarterback Casey Thompson pass and house-called it. After this, the Longhorns slowly lost their grip on the Cowboys, as although the offense continued to struggle until well into the fourth quarter, the Cowboy defense started to step up. The Longhorns were then outscored 22-7 the rest of the way, giving up the majority of those points in the fourth quarter (16). Texas now sits at 4-3, with a 2-2 conference record. So far Texas doesn’t have a statement victory, as they will have yet another opportunity after their bye week against Baylor. 4: Iowa State – Won 33-20 against Kansas State From the first snap of the game, Kansas State had a good impression of how good running back Breece Hall is. The first play of the game was a 75-yard touchdown. Hall then went on to rush for 122 more yards, totaling 197 yards on the ground with two touchdowns to go along with it. Not only did Hall play well, but quarterback, Brock Purdy, also played very efficiently. Although he only threw one touchdown, he had his highest completion percentage of the season, as he completed 88% of his passes. In other words, while Hall led the team offensively, Purdy managed the Cyclones very well. The Cyclones also won the turnover margin, as they took care of the ball. 3: Oklahoma – Won 52-31 against TCU The “we want Caleb” chants have come true. After quarterback Spencer Rattler continued to struggle against Texas, backup quarterback Caleb Williams entered the game, and as of right now, looks like he won’t look back. Williams got his first career start against TCU, and played exceptionally well. He accounted for 361 total yards and five total touchdowns. His impact was made in the passing game for the most part, as he threw for 295 yards and four touchdowns at a 78% completion rate. His ability to scramble can’t go unnoticed though, as he averaged 7.3 yards per carry and got in the end zone once. Aside from Williams, Oklahoma had multiple other standout performances. Running back Kennedy Brooks ran all over the Horned Frogs. Brooks

had 153 yards and found the end zone once, as he averaged 7.7 yards per carry. Wide receiver, Jason Haselwood, also had a great outing, as he only had six receptions for 56 yards, but caught three touchdowns. The Sooners offense looked much more fluid than it had all season, and this doesn’t seem like a coincidence. It seems like Williams may have been the perfect fit all along, as the once Heisman-hopeful Rattler sits on the bench. 2: Oklahoma State – Won 32-24 against Texas Just find a way to win. This seems to be Oklahoma State’s motto all season. At one point in the second quarter, Texas was driving and looking to make it a threepossession lead over the Cowboys. OSU safety Jason Taylor II came to the rescue. With a little over five minutes remaining in the second quarter, Taylor had an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown, cutting the Longhorn lead to only seven, a huge momentum swing. The Cowboys won this game in the last quarter-and-a-half of the game, as they went on a 19-0 run to close out the game. This was led by the defense, who made multiple crucial stops, including a game-sealing interception from safety Tanner McCalister with a minute left in the game. Another storyline coming into this game was the play of Longhorn running back Bijan Robinson, who has snuck into the Heisman conversation as of late. Although Robinson put up his fair share of numbers on the Cowboy defense, the opposing running back, Jaylen Warren, had 193 yards of his own, solidifying that he is one of the best backs in the Big 12 as well. The Cowboys now sit as the No. 8 team in the nation and 6-0. Although they’ve had to scrap and claw their way to that ranking and record, they’ve done it. 1: Baylor – Won 38-24 against BYU Baylor coming into this game was 1-1 in ranked games.

Abby Cage

Going up against (at the time) the No. 19 team in the country, BYU, the Bears knew that they would be able to make a statement victory if they played well... and that they did. For starters, their rushing offense completely dismantled the Cougars defense, as they rushed for 303 yards on the day. This rushing attack was led by running back Abram Smith who had 188 yards, three touchdowns and averaged seven yards a carry. After the Cougars touchdown in the early second quarter, the Bears went on a 28-7 run until the early fourth quarter, as although their offense was clearly rolling, so was their defense. This shows in the time of possession comparison, as the Bears held the ball for 35:36 compared to the Cougars only having the ball for 24:24. Sitting at a 6-1 record and 3-1 in-conference record, the Bears conference championship dreams aren’t dead, as they hope to keep this momentum up for the rest of the season. sports.ed@ocolly.com
