Breaking down the numbers OSU’s baseball season to this point Adam Engel Staff Reporter Ten games remain in OSU’s regular season. The Cowboys enter this weekend’s series against Southeast Missouri State leading the Big 12. Here are five numbers from OSU’s season so far. 100: Strikeouts by ace pitcher Justin Campbell. With an alpha-like presence on the mound, Campbell leads the Big 12 in strikeouts and it’s not particularly close. Brandon Birdsell of Texas Tech claims 86. Campbell’s triple digit tally leads any other OSU pitcher by 37 strikeouts. He fools hitters with high-end command. “He’s a freak,” reliever Roman Phansalkar said. “Not only mentally, but physically. He’s as dialed in a pitcher as I’ve seen here in college, and I’ve watched OSU for a long time.” Considering Campbell pitches each Friday, he has three regular season appearances remaining. 500 feet: Distance that designated hitter Griffin Doersching’s home run traveled against Wichita State on April 12. When Doersching announced his graduate transfer from Northern Kentucky, his raw power skills were clear. He missed 22 games earlier this season because of a broken left foot but he continues to produce. Doersching clobbered six home runs — five of which were post-injury. He hit two against Texas this past week. 4: Saves by two-way player Nolan McLean this season. Primarily a third baseman, McLean’s services as a pitcher have increased this season. He recorded two saves against Texas while retiring all six batters faced and provides a high-90s fastball speed from the bullpen. Originally recruited to OSU as a baseball player and quarterback, McLean’s arm strength is highly regarded. “I’ve seen Nolan stand and let one (football) go that goes 80-85 yards,” pitcher Bryce Osmond said. 55: Hits by outfielder Jake Thompson. The team-leading statistic originates from Thompson’s veteran plate discipline and durability. A sixth-year graduate student, Thompson is the only Cowboy to start every game so far this season. His teamleading .444 on-base percentage manufactures runs toward the top of the lineup. 1: Times OSU was swept so far this season. To find OSU’s only sweep, fans must rewind to early March when the Cowboys hosted Gonzaga. The Cowboys lost each game by a run in a pitching duel series. Doersching was unavailable with a broken feet and offense remained scarce. Gonzaga’s sweep is not detrimental to OSU as the Bulldogs lead the West Coast Conference. Ben Cohen Oklahoma State baseball has been swept just once this season and ranks No. 3 in the country.
