As children, we often wish for what our friends have, and we don’t change much when we become college students.

Although Stillwater is home to beloved locally-owned establishments and well-known chain restaurants, the O’Colly editorial board has some ideas about places that should expand from other cities to our college town. Target is a popular suggestion, but what other places would attract Oklahoma State students? Here are our picks:

I have never had a meal cost more than $6 at Steak ‘n Shake, which should appeal to anyone in college. With a great selection of steak burgers, fries and shakes, it’s impossible to not find something you like in this fast food joint.

From the perfect hangover cure to a great, cheap meal with your friends, Steak ‘n Shake has the atmosphere to host any social gathering you may need at a reasonable price. Great, cheap food. Who doesn’t want that?

There is no name more synonymous with fun than that of Charles Entertainment Cheese. Endless rows of arcade fun. A wall full of legendary prizes. Extremely average pizza. What’s not to love? Traditionally, Chuck E. Cheese’s caters to a younger demographic, but I think it would thrive in a town like Stillwater. College kids are always looking for cheap thrills, and the token-based arcade system at Chuck E. Cheese provides just that.

The pizza is sub par but tolerable, and the salad bar is a great option for those watching their waistline.

When looking for fast food in Stillwater, finding anything other than fried chicken can be a tall order. And while I love a Zax snack, if I could get a $9 Pei Wei Bento box to go right here in Stillwater.... that’d be a game-changer. Pei Wei is the fast food version of PF Changs, a high end Chinese bistro, and I’ll say itit’s delicious. It’s healthy, it’s quick, it’s affordable AND it’s not traditional American food. Sign me up immediately!

Put a Waffle House on Washington Street. There, I said it. Think about it, Waffle House is the perfect place for intoxicated people to get cheap food, other than Taco Bell. But the added bonus is that the Waffle House never closes. You can go there at 1 p.m. or 1 a.m. and get food. Jimmy John’s and Insomnia Cookies are thriving because drunk college students crave food after drinking. At 2 a.m., with three limeys in my system, there’s nothing I’d rather spend my last 10 dollars on than some waffles and hash browns.

From to glazed lemon filled doughnuts to chocolate iced glazed crullers, Krispy Kreme offers a well-rounded (pun intended) selection of sweet treats. Sure, Stillwater already has Daylight Donuts, but why not add another place to get doughnuts? After all, the community is home to multiple coffee shops, and since I’ve been in college, new chicken restaurants have popped up faster than I can keep track of them.

My family and I love Krispy Kreme doughnuts — my sister usually eats them on her birthday instead of having a cake — but the closest place to buy them is Oklahoma City. In a college town, boxes of a dozen Krispy Kremes would be great for early morning on-campus meetings or group study sessions on finals week. Also, I don’t think I’d ever get tired of the heavenly maple iced glazed doughnuts.

OSU alumnus Aditya Singh uses his stuffed bear Bubby to bring others together and help those struggling with mental health issues.

When Singh began college at OSU, he suffered from depression and anxiety.

To help cheer himself up, he began to take pictures of his stuffed bear, Bubby, doing fun activities and posted them on social media.

“I’ve had Bubby for over 33 years and have a close bond with him,” Singh said. “I started to take pictures of him doing fun stuff just to entertain myself and to alleviate

some of the loneliness I was feeling.”

Singh said the support he received online delighted him.

“I enjoy traveling, and I would take pictures with Bubby while traveling and post them on Instagram and got a lot of positive response,” Singh said.

“A lot of people enjoyed seeing those pictures. I also had fun role-playing with him, pretending and telling stories and making comics out of it.”

Although taking pictures of a stuffed bear felt strange at first, Singh said those feelings soon went away once he realized the impact it had on himself and others.

“It seemed a bit of silly at the start; I won’t deny that,” Singh said. “Me

being a grown adult taking pictures of a bear and carrying him around, but that thought quickly went away and the fun aspect was so huge compared to the awkwardness I initially felt. I realized this would be a great way to break the ice and talk to people. I was traveling, so it helped me kind of overcome my shyness, and I am very grateful for that.”

In the future, Singh said he wants to create programs to help college students deal with mental health issues.

“A lot of college students go through depression or loneliness, like I experienced, while they’re in school,” Singh said.

“I’m hoping to create some programs to help

students deal with stress and anxiety.”

As Singh shared more of his experience with Bubby, he realized what a creative outlet it could be.

Now, he is considering next steps such as creating a play-therapy program with the university counseling center.

“Just over the last 10 months of doing this, I realized that this could be a fun medium to overcome some of those issues and enjoy yourself at the same time,” Singh said.

Although no programs have been created yet, Singh is currently working through the feasibility of doing so. Ultimately, he hopes that through Bubby he can bring others together, change social norms and still be cool.

“You can take a toy or plushie out with you; it’s fun and it’s your way to self-express,” Singh said.

“I have followers from across the world, and many people have their toy. Some have a bear, cow, cat, or dog. Nobody sees religion or nationality, it’s the most pure and unbiased way to look at things.”

After Singh graduated from OSU this summer, he moved to California to devote his full time, effort and energy into this concept. He plans to create a Pinterest, Youtube and TikTok for Bubby.

“I see that this is very important from a global perspective, but also for me personally,” Singh said. “It’s in line with what I want to do in life,

which is to change society and help humanity, and have fun in the process.”

As Bubby’s social media followers continue to grow, Singh said he hopes to create a larger community where others can use toys or plushies to engage in fun activities such as travel, food and more.

“The community of followers are very encouraging, positive and nonjudgmental,” Singh said.

“I can put out something positive on social media every day and spread joy and happiness.”
