Garth Brooks wants to do concert at Boone Pickens Stadium, but says it’s impossible

posite for concerts,” Brooks said. “It’s not built for how we play in the round stadiums. If we were front on, we’d be fine. But since we’re at 360 (degree angle), the stadium is built more in a ‘U’ and where the opening of the ‘U’ needs to be is exactly opposite of where it needs to be.” However, Brooks did not completely shut down the idea of playing in Stillwater. The artist said he would be willing to play at Willie’s Saloon on Washington Street – where he played his first big concert in 1985. “If I had a place to pick to play there, it’d be Willie’s,” Brooks said. “I would love to play Willie’s again.” When discussing how a potential concert in Stillwater would be, Brooks passionately talked about his school. He said he appreciates the people at OSU and thinks they would show him a great time. “That’s what’s fun about anything at Oklahoma State: It’s going to be a party, it’s going to be fun, it’s going to be sincere and it’s going to be loud as hell,” Brooks said.
Garth Brooks desperately wants to perform at OSU – but according to him, it is impossible. “Logistically, it’s not possible to play there,” Brooks told The O’Colly in an exclusive interview airing Friday on O’Colly TV. “Would I want to play there? Hell yeah. That’d be like ordering two buffets at a pizza joint. There’s no better place to play.” Brooks, a 1984 alumnus, has been doing a stadium tour since 2019, but Boone Pickens Stadium never came up as a possible location. As a result, thousands of Twitter users started the “#GarthToBPS” campaign in an attempt to persuade the two-time Grammy winner to play there. Unfortunately for these users, Boone Pickens Stadium is not built properly to suit Brooks’ concerts. “The problem with Boone Pickens is it’s built exactly opnews.ed@ocolly.com

IS GOD WORKING IN YOU? The Apostle tells us; “...for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” (Phil.2:13 NIV) This seems an important statement that God would actually work in you and me. How can it happen? In Philippians chapter 2, we are given direction from the apostle Paul about this very important matter. He tells us to look at Jesus while he was here on this earth and follow his example. “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.”(V5 NIV) What was his attitude? You see clearly the key in verse 8; : “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself.” Man, woman, youth; whoever we are and whatever our situation, we are to intentionally humble ourselves before God. Present ourselves to God so that we become a vessel for his work in and through us.
The Lord looks on humility in a very positive way. God says, “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.” (Is.66:2 NIV) God greatly respects those who greatly respect him and his word. This person is ready to hear and move with God. “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.” (Ps.25:9 NIV) If we stop and think about it; this person is the only one who will pay any attention to God’s will. Pride and self-centeredness are great hindrances to God working in us. The apostle says, offer your body as a living sacrifice. He does not say “get religious.” You are humbling yourself before God for his will to be done; an attitude of humility. This is what Jesus did. As you do the same, God will lead and work in you.

Hargis celebration on hold

Former President Burns Hargis and First Cowgirl will be the Grand Marshals in the Centennial Celebration of America’s Greatest Homecoming.
Anna Pope News Editor Tomorrow evening, the Hargis Legacy gala, an event to honor former Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis and First Cowgirl Ann Hargis, was slated to take place in the
McKnight Center. The legacy Gala is postponed until further notice. Jennifer Kinnard, the assistant vice president of marketing and communications for the Oklahoma State University Foundation, said the gala was put on hold to “reimagine” the event to fit into the theme of the Centennial Edition of America’s Greatest Homecoming, provide more time to fundraise and the current COVID-19 situation. Kinnard said the main reason for this date shift is because the timing of

homecoming is better. “They just thought that this homecoming made a lot more sense with them being the Grand Marshals and thought there would be more of a chance for a lot more people to get involved in the celebration,” Kinnard said. The OSU foundation is holding the event. In a statement from the foundation, said while the gala is not happening this week, the OSU Homecoming festivities is a better time to recognize Ann and Burns because of their involvement in Homecoming.
While the event is on hold and can open more time to fundraise, Kinnard said over a million dollars have already been raised to further OSU initiatives and support students. COVID-19 cases is not the primary motivator postponing the gala, the general case count was considered. Last week, city officials announced a State of Emergency in Stillwater.

Strengths and weaknesses
TU dominant rushing attack hampered by penalties, turnovers Kaleb Tadpole Staff Reporter Oklahoma State is heading into the second week of the season coming off a 23-16 win over Missouri State. The Cowboys will be play Tulsa on Saturday, the Golden Hurricane narrowly lost 19-17 in their season opener against UC Davis. Here are the strengths and weaknesses of TU heading into Saturdays game: Strength: Rushing Attack
Tulsa was able to rush for 283 yards on 34 carries in its loss to UC Davis this past Saturday. Junior running back Deneric Prince led the team with 179 yards on 14 attempts, averaging about 13 yards a carry. Following Prince was senior Shamari Brooks who was also able to rush for 88 yards on 10 attempts. Despite the loss, TU still looked solid on the ground. The dual running back threat of Prince and Brooks is something OSU will have to watch out for. Strength: Stopping the Run TU’s defense held up strong against the run against UC Davis, allowing just 88 yards on 46 total carries. UC Davis averaged just 1.9 yards per carry as a team with the longest run being 12 yards.
TU’s front seven did not let up all night long and forced UC Davis to beat them through the air, which they ultimately did. Weakness: Pass Defense When it came to the pass Saturday, TU looked unprepared. UC Davis was able to get whatever they wanted. Junior quarterback Hunter Rodrigues completed 28 passes on 35 attempts with 311 yards and one touchdown. He also took care of the ball with no interceptions on the game. It was a TU defense with little resistance against the pass that led to Rodrigues having his best game in his time at UC Davis. Weakness: Turnovers In a game that was decided by less than three points, every possession is crucial to the outcome of the game. TU did just the opposite, throw-
ing two interceptions and losing one fumble. If TU had controlled the time of possession and not gave them numerous chances, this game outcome could have been different. TU had a new starting quarterback, junior Davis Brin, who struggled to take care of the ball in his debut. As Brin gets more comfortable TU should hope that the turnover numbers go down. Weakness: Penalties Last season penalties were something TU struggled with and was all the same this past Saturday. TU had 12 penalties for a total of 122 yards. TU needs to get more disciplined on both sides of the ball if they hope to compete at a high level this Saturday and throughout this season. sports.ed@ocolly.com

The Cowboys will have to adjust their secondary in the first half due to the loss of Tre Sterling.
Cowboys lose Sterling to targeting, message remains same Chris Becker Assistant Sports Editor Missouri State’s Myron Mason ran toward the middle of the end zone as quarterback Jason Shelley searched for a receiver to throw to. Shelley found Mason over the middle and as he crossed into the endzone, Oklahoma State safety Tre Sterling lowered his body in Mason, who’s body also lowered in an attempt to lessen the big blow headed his way. The Big 12 officials in charge of the game flagged Sterling for targeting
on the hit. After review the play was upheld, and Sterling was ejected because the play happened in the fourth quarter the Cowboys star safety will miss the first half of their game against Tulsa. “I thought that he led with a partial shoulder, partial head which should not be an ejection in my opinion,” Gundy said. “It wasn’t a direct headonly contact. I saw several others that happened this week that were every bit or maybe more than, and they ruled the other way. So it’s a matter of opinion, right?” Coaches on the OSU staff make it a point to teach its players to hit below the chest to avoid a possible targeting call and to avoid putting the rest of the game in the hands of officials. “You got to stay down (below the chest),” Gundy said. “OK, you stay
down here, we don’t rely on somebody else to offer an opinion on whether it’s targeting or not. My personal opinion, I am excited that they have greatly minimized blows above the shoulder, but this in my opinion, whether it was a penalty or not I’m good with, but for an ejection, I didn’t think it was that type of a hit.” OSU, however, has depth in its safety room to help fill the void Sterling leaves, for the first half. Replacing him isn’t an easy task, but defensive coordinator Jim Knowles will turn to redshirt junior Jason Taylor II. Taylor is most notably remembered as the OSU special teamer who returned a Texas Tech onside kick for a touchdown and an 85-yard fumble recovery against Kansas State in 2020. Despite only starting in one game in his career, which also came after
Sterling was called for targeting, the Cowboys are expecting big things from Taylor. “He’s an experienced guy that had to play for us at times,” Gundy said. “He practices all the time. I’m good with him, we trust him, he plays hard.” Despite not having a key starting piece to the defensive backfield the message is simple, just play the game they’ve played forever. “Just play football, we’ve been playing this game for a long time,” safety Tanner McCalister said. “It’s always business when we step onto the field. Everybody, especially us being (defensive backs), we all kind of have a cocky side to us, nobody wants to lose or get beat.” sports.ed@ocolly.com
