VACCINE TRIALS COME TO Oklahoma

The COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna is in phase III.

Lifelong Oklahoman and practicing pharmacist Lauren Murphey is feeling more optimistic these days.

Her background in

health and pharmacy landed her at the University of Oklahoma children’s hospital last year and she’s learning more about her field every day.

She also may

have already received the COVID-19 vaccine.

“The trial that I’m in is called the Moderna trial,” Murphey said. So I’m in the trial, it’s a phase III trial so

it’s already gone through two phases.

Before they look at how well (the vaccine) works, they first look at safety.

That’s kind of first and foremost with what they look at.”

Moderna, a United States-based biotechnology company, has one of the more unique COVID-19 vaccines being tested.

In it, the company is using messenger

RNA, a genetic material that no other approved vaccine has ever used.

“That’s why Moderna was able to put this together so quickly,” Murphey said. They look at messenger RNA and so they’ve already been looking at that for a slew of things and so they were really able to take that technology they’re already researching and just kind of tweak it for COVID-19 and plug it in.”

Murphey was told that this vaccine trial is looking at different doses and that the Moderna vaccine, if approved, would likely have multiple doses needed to ensure a strong antibody response.

“So you’ll get one dose on your first visit and then you’ll get your second dose like a month later,” Murphey said.

But due to the way that Moderna is conducting this trial, Murphey still doesn’t know if the shot she received had the actual vaccine in it.

“Out of the 30,000 (vaccine trial members), roughly 15,000 will get the vaccine and the other 15,000 will get the placebo, which is really just a normal saline injection,”

Murphey said.

“But it is double blind, actually quadruple blind, but it is double blind in the sense that I don’t know what I got, but the researchers also don’t know what I have. So they get a batch of them and someone totally independent knows what they are, but we don’t know.”

Having a quadruple blind experiment like this will stop the trial candidates from having biases in their symptoms. Every day, Murphey has to fill out a chart of her symptoms and how she feels to ensure the researchers have all the updated information. She finds support during this trial from six other trial members -which she shares a group chat with.

“We can kind of compare how we’re feeling and stuff and that’s totally fine because we all don’t know what we got so one of us may have a vaccine, one may have a placebo,” Murphy said.

Murphey noted that while this trial is technically a two-year surveillance process, the vaccine may be approved and ready by the end of 2020.

Stillwater City Council considers further COVID-19 precautions Chase Weems, Staff reporter, @ocolly

During Monday evening’s meeting, The Stillwater City Council discussed potential actions to combat the spread of COVID-19 following videos of large crowds gathering in local bars over the weekend.

Although some have called for bars to be closed down, or for a return to shelter-in-place regulations, the councilors preferred an approach that would be less restrictive of local businesses.

Mayor William Joyce was among the supporters of this less restrictive approach, while also acknowledging his disappointment in those who decided to attend a crowded party.

“I think we all would prefer that businesses and individuals are able to make decisions without having

to be told what to do,” Joyce said.

City Manager Norman McNickle took time to give his reasoning for opposing bar closures. McNickle argued that shutting down the bars could be one of the worst things that the city could do.

He said it would drive those parties to private property, where the city has less authority.

Joyce said there is nothing more important to Stillwater’s economic health than for students to be on campus.

Weighing both health and economic concerns, the councilors considered additional limited occupancy regulations at bars in town, and requiring table service to keep customers socially distanced.

Joyce said both would be passed through emergency orders and are likely to go into place before this

weekend.

Also discussed was the possibility of allowing bars and restaurants to expand outdoors. This would likely be done through emergency order on a temporary basis to gauge its effectiveness before deciding if a long term ordinance is necessary. The specifications and timeline of this action will be discussed further in the next council meeting.

Joyce vowed to take more stringent action if people do not follow city guidelines.

“At the end of the day, people have to make good decisions,” Joyce said.

The next scheduled meeting of the Stillwater City Council is set for Aug. 24, at 5:30 p.m.

SPORTS Q&A wit h Jay Udwadia

Jared A’latorre Staff reporter @Ocolly In his tenure, Oklahoma State men’s tennis coach Jay Udwadia has arguably led the Cowboys to recognizable success.

The recruiting in the recent seasons shows there is plenty to look forward to at the Greenwood Tennis Center for the foreseeable future.

There are also other questions to be considered.

Who is Udwadia other than a coach?

What does he remember from his earlier days on the court? What are his best memories?

What can be compared from growing up in New York to moving to the South?

Q: What was your first impression of tennis and how you got involved?

A: I come from a tennis family. My mom played, and then she got my other brothers involved.

My first memory was taking group lessons at about 5 or 6 years of age.

Q: What was another activity when you weren’t on the tennis courts?

A: I did a little bit of everything, but I

didn’t concentrate on anything as much as I did on tennis, and I remember having to kind of make a decision as to which way I wanted to go.

When I was about 8 or 9, I decided to just go full throttle on tennis.

Q: What changes of scenery and culture did you see from your road from New York to Stillwater?

A: I started traveling at a young age playing in national tournaments. I saw the rest of the country, and I think Stillwater is a lot like Fayetteville, Arkansas. It’s exactly what a smalltown college (scene) would be with my past experiences at the University of Arkansas. I have traveled a lot as a junior.

I’d say 20-25 years ago, Fayetteville was very similar to what Stillwater is now. It’s grown a lot and it’s a very similar town than what it was when I played there.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of playing?

A: It’s gotta be college tennis. I think it’s really special when you play for a team and give it all to the guys next to you. That’s probably my proudest moment playing for a school and just trying to

win by my teammates.

Q: What’s your favorite memory of coaching?

A: In terms of Oklahoma State, I think what got the program really going after my first year, it was really special to be the number No. 6 seed tennis team at home. I had been selling all the recruits like telling them we’re going to get this new facility, and we’re going to be a good team, just trust the process and all that. The second year, we really took off, to beat Tennessee at home with the opening of the Greenwood Tennis Center, it was a really special moment for OSU tennis.

Q: What do you like the most about gameday?

A: You kind of get a little bit addicted to the competition and you just can’t wait to start playing the matches, so just the excitement to start competing on those days and then seeing how everything plays out and enjoying the moment, it’s definitely the most special thing for me.

I’m outside a lot, I’m with younger people a lot even though I’m getting older. It’s just the feeling of being

alive and competing and living through the guys (of) what I had gone through years before.

Q: What’s your main motivation?

A: I think you just keep on getting better. The ultimate goal is, someday you want to win a national championship but I think for these players, when they sign to be a Cowboy, you want to give them the best student-athlete experience. You want to make sure they can win on a championship level team so it motivates me trying to get them to the best level I can. I love to see how they grow up and mature as kids as they go on during the most pivotal years in their life to see them grow and anything I can do to help them achieve their goals on and off the tennis court is really rewarding. It motivates me to see them come away with a degree and make the right choice to come to Oklahoma State.

Q: How do you think the COVID-19 pandemic will influence you and your boys in the near future?

A: I think everyone’s wondering the same thing. I don’t think anyone has all of

the answers. I think we’re going to come out of this in a lot of ways. Sometimes, life puts these dampers on you, and at the end of the day, you just try to be as positive as you can and hopefully some positives will come out of this, and we’ll appreciate what we have and we’ll make do with whatever the NCAA tells us.

We’re still going to train, we’re going to hopefully have a small season. We’re playing tennis outside in the sun and these kids are getting a scholarship to get their education. I think we’re all very fortunate to still do what we’re doing.

We just got to put aside the “Debbie Downer” moments and try to keep on (fighting) through because there’s a lot to play for and I think eventually this thing will end and the things we have in place will be better for it.

Q: What’s your philosophy or something you tell the boys before and after the matches?

A: It’s interesting because we have all this stuff, but I think we also have to get the team to realize we’re a blue-collar tennis team. Even

though we have all the resources and facilities, I want them to be grounded and appreciate what we have and the hard work is what counts the most, not how much clothing you get, what type of nice facility you get, all that stuff is great, but it really comes down to what you’re gonna get back and you can look at yourself in the mirror at the end of the day and know you put in the work and we’re doing it together.

Q: What is your advice to a young boy or girl looking to be the next tennis star?

A: You can really drive yourself nuts and keep comparing yourself to your peers and all that stuff, but I think you just have to worry about your improvement, and as long as you’re doing the right things, that’s all you can control.

If you have that desire and the motivation and determination, it’s eventually going to come.

Just stay patient, and good things will happen to people who work hard and are on the right track mentality wise. sports.ed@ocolly. com

Before Big 12 president Bob Bowlsby announced the conference’s choice to continue with its football season, Gundy said his team did the best they could do to plan.

“There wasn’t a lot of focus because of lack of direction,” Gundy said. “But since that point, we’ve got a plan, we’ve got a practice schedule in place and just instilling all the importance to the players and protecting themselves

against the virus and then trying to play in a football game and start school.”

With the Cowboys’ new plan, they’ve had to make some adjustments on and off the field. It included the way they use meeting rooms, living arrangements, nutrition and more, according to Gundy.

Gundy credited the team’s medical staff for putting the Cowboys in a position to stay safe and be able to practice.

As for his players going to class, Gundy said 75% of the team will be taking online classes.

“We will have (players) on campus, but it won’t be near the number of guys that will be on campus as to other years,” Gundy said. “Some of that is university

choice and some of that is by player, but it will be different than it has been based on the situation we’re all put on with the virus.”

The Cowboys are scheduled to start their season against in-state rivals Tulsa on Sept. 12 and its conference schedule two weeks later.

Throughout all the instability, Gundy and his team have faced, he’s still hopeful for the Cowboys to get on the field.

“It’s extremely difficult to get where we are now with all the things that are going on,” Gundy said. “Our guys did a great job in putting us in a position to play a season.” sports.ed@ocolly. com

Students’ Rights to Privacy The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA, also referred to as the Buckley Amendment) was designed to protect the privacy of educational records, to establish the right of students to inspect and review their educational records in all offices, and to provide guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading data through informal and formal hearings.

An OSU student has the right to: 1. Inspect and review information contained in his or her educational records within 45 days of the day that the University receives a written request from the student 2. Challenge the contents of the educational record.

3. Have a hearing if the outcome of a challenge is unsatisfactory.

4. Submit an explanatory statement for inclusion in the educational record, if the outcome of the hearing is unsatisfactory.

5. Secure a copy of the institutional policy, which includes the location of all educational records.

6. Prevent disclosure, with certain exceptions, of personally identifiable information from the educational record.

7. File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the University to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the office that administers FERPA is: Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C. 20202-5901.

Withholding Disclosure of Information Currently enrolled students may withhold disclosure of directory information. A student may file a written request with the Office of the Registrar to not release personally identifiable information, including directory information. Such requests will be honored until revoked by the student. The University assumes that failure on the part of any student to specifically request the withholding of directory information indicates individual approval for disclosure.

Access to Records Students may inspect and review their educational records by making a written request to the office that maintains the records (see Location of Records below). No non-directory information regarding students’ educational records may be disclosed to anyone without written consent of students, except for selected purposes as authorized by federal law, such as: 1. To “school officials” who have a “legitimate educational interest” in the student.

2. Upon request to another institution to which a student seeks or intends to enroll or is already enrolled if the disclosure is related to the student’s enrollment or transfer.

To parents of a student regarding the student’s violation of any Federal, State, or local law or of any rule or policy of the school governing the use or possession of alcohol or a controlled substance if the school determines the student committed a disciplinary violation and the student is under the age of 21.

Parental Access to Records At the postsecondary level, parents have no inherent rights to inspect their son’s or daughter’s educational records. Information regarding educational records is best obtained by direct communication between the parent and the student. Students may consent to release their educational records to parents, legal guardians, or other individuals by providing access using the Proxy feature in Self Service or completing the appropriate form in the Office of the Registrar. Such consent should be given in an uncoercive environment. Parents of a dependent student may challenge denial of access to educational records by producing the most current copy of Internal Revenue Form 1040.

Definitions “Educational Record” refers to those records which are directly related to a student and are maintained by an educational institution.

“Directory Information” includes: student’s name; local and permanent address or hometown; telephone number; year of birth; major field of study; weight and height of student participating in officially recognized sports; dates of attendance at Oklahoma State University; degrees, honors, and awards granted or received and dates granted or received; academic classification such as freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, etc.; institutional electronic mail address; most recent educational institution previously attended; dissertation or thesis title; adviser or thesis/dissertation adviser; participation in officially recognized organizations, activities, and sports; parents’ names and addresses (city and state only).

“School official” is defined as an individual currently serving as a member of the Oklahoma State University Board of Regents or classified as faculty, administrative, or professional, and the staff such school officials supervise; the President and CEO of the Alumni Association and President and CEO of the Oklahoma State University Foundation and the staff they supervise; the National Student Clearinghouse; and contractors, volunteers, and other non-employees performing institutional functions as school officials with legitimate educational interests.

“Legitimate educational interest” A school official has a “legitimate educational interest” if a review of a student’s record is necessary to fulfill the official’s professional responsibilities to the University. School officials may have legitimate educational interests both in students who are currently enrolled and in those no longer enrolled.

Location of Records

Several offices share responsibility for maintaining and releasing information pertaining to student education records. These include, but are not restricted to: a. the Office of the Registrar for academic records, b. the Office of Student Judicial Affairs for disciplinary records, c. the Office of the Bursar for billing and payment records, d. the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for scholarship and financial aid records, e. the Human Resources office and Career Services office for employment/placement records, and f. the Communications Service office for directory information.
