Missed the show? Here are 7 must-see moments to catch up on Nardine Saad Los Angeles Times

The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards — aka Hollywood’s latest superspreader event — took place Sunday evening in Los Angeles. Didn’t know that? You weren’t alone. And this story is for you. Droves of television’s brightest stars gathered at the Event Deck at L.A. Live in what presenter Seth Rogen referred to as “a hermetically sealed tent” to celebrate the best TV offerings of the past year. The show was a far cry from last year’s semi-virtual soiree, and it was a big night for Netflix’s “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” and Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso.” But there’s more to it than just the winners. Here’s a look at some must-see moments from the telecast: The opening monologueslash-Biz Markie tribute The evening’s host, Cedric the Entertainer, dismissed expectations of a subdued “Emmys lite” awards show by turning the show’s opening monologue into an unexpected rap sing-along that saluted television via a cover of late rapper Biz Markie’s jubilant hit “Just a Friend.” LLCool J and Lil Dicky, as well as COVID-19 rapper Rita Wilson, joined in for the opener. The “Hamilton” cast and “Pose” stars sang along to the reinvented tune, while Kaley Cuoco and Michael Douglas danced to the beat. his award with fellow nominated late-night host Conan O’Brien, whose own show went off the air this season. “I think like many of us in this room, I was kind of rooting for Conan,” Oliver said. “So this is bittersweet.

Thank you so much, Conan, for 30 years of inspiring comedy writers.” Oliver was among many of the evening’s honorees to pay tribute to comedy legend Norm Macdonald, who died last week after a private nine-

year battle with cancer. “I just want to say this is an award for late-night comedy,” he added. “No one was funnier in the last 20 years than Norm Macdonald on latenight comedy, so if, if you have any time in the next week, do

what I did and just spend time YouTubing clips of Norm and Conan because it just doesn’t get better than that.”

Lifestyle seven times. I want my Emmy,” Alexander asserted before getting in a play fight with Bakula. “So, I haven’t won an Emmy, but you know what? My generation isn’t into awards. We’re all deserving of love and respect,” Deschanel explained in an effort to enlighten the room, before adding, “But also, where’s my f— Emmy?!” Debbie Allen’s banner year continues Dance pioneer Debbie Allen, this year’s recipient of the Television Academy’s Governors Award, continued her banner year after taking home a 2021 Kennedy Center Honor in January. Allen capitalized on the TV moment Sunday with a powerful message for women, and had no problem delivering it while shooing away the time constraints for her speech. (And she did it so much more charmingly than the voluble writerproducer Scott Frank of “The Queen’s Gambit.”) “Let this moment resonate with women across this country and across the world, from Texas to Afghanistan,” she said. “Let them know — and also with young people, who would have no vote, who can’t even get a vaccine; they’re inheriting the world that we leave them — it is time for you to claim your power, claim your voice, sing your song, tell your stories. It will make us a better place. Your turn.” Michaela Coel’s advice to writers “I May Destroy You” actor, writer, producer and director Michaela Coel capped her first Emmy win with “a little something for writers.” “Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn’t comfortable,” she said during her acceptance speech for writing. “I dare you — in a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to in turn feel the need to be constantly visible, for visibility these days seems to somehow equate to success — do not be afraid to disappear from it, from us for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence. ... I dedicate this story to every single survivor of sexual assault.”

Macdonald also was name-checked moments later when “Saturday Night Live” executive producer Lorne Michaels paid tribute to the late “Weekend Update” host, hailing Macdonald “one of the best we ever had.” Jason Sudeikis dumps on Lorne Michaels While accepting his Emmy Award for lead actor in a comedy series, “Ted Lasso” star and co-writer Jason Sudeikis delivered a heartfelt speech thanking his parents, mentors and teachers and show teammates. But it was the “Saturday Night Live” alum’s callout of Michaels that made his speech particularly memorable, “I want to thank folks at ‘SNL.’ I want to thank Lorne [Michaels], who went to go take a dump now, perfect,” Sudeikis quipped. “He’s gonna get home, he’s gonna watch it — he loves watching the Emmys at home. It’s fine, it’s fine. Which home is the big question.” A ‘Schitt’s Creek’ reunion we didn’t know we needed “Schitt’s Creek” stars Dan Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Annie Murphy and Eugene Levy won big last year but were hanging out at a remote viewing party in Canada to celebrate. So it was a welcome sight to see the group onstage Sunday night with the feel-good levity fans of their comedy series grew to love. As usual, the laughs came at the expense of the elder Levy, who apparently told show writers to “lift” the lines for their bit — a task they seemingly took literally, leaving the group to improvise without a teleprompter. The No Emmys Support Group In a prerecorded bit, Cedric the Entertainer moderated a mock group-therapy session for TV stars Scott Bakula, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Alexander, Zooey Deschanel, Fred Savage and Dr. Phil. The actors commiserated over the fact that, despite their ubiquity, they had never won a Primetime Emmy. “I’ve been nominated eight times. Seven consecutive times for playing George Costanza. ... Jonah Kramer Freshman Civil Engineering Major Dear Editor, I would like to provide an alternative perspective regarding your recent editorial, “Enough is enough,” Sept. 10. In it, you called for students to defend their legal right to not wear a mask in the classroom, a position I cannot agree with. Stillwater is in a State of Emergency. There are no Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds available at Stillwater Medical Center and no non-ICU beds available. I believe it is dangerous to encourage students to flaunt measures protecting both the Oklahoma State and Stillwater communities. Masks are only required by the university in places where someone who contracted the virus is known to have been. It is a measure to prevent classes from becoming super spreader events where one asymptomatic student infects an entire class. This is the least restrictive measure that will allow us to continue in-person instruction. That you would encourage others to circumvent one of the few things keeping us on-campus is worrying. I also cannot abide by your claim of discrimination for your decision to not wear a mask. Does a teacher discriminate if they ask a student wearing shorts and a tank top to change into more protective clothing during a chemistry lab? The choice of clothing is up to the student, but the teacher is obligated to keep the class safe. “I will not allow any institution to take away my right to decide for myself,” you wrote. Would you as eagerly stand up for the right of a chemistry student who decides what they wear when working with hazardous chemicals? In both cases, the chemistry lab and the situation of the class with a recent COVID-19 case, the teacher is following the recommendations of experts in promoting the safety of students. There is one major difference between an accident due to improper safety precautions in a chemistry lab and a class with a recent COVID-19 case. If masks are not worn, the virus can be spread beyond the classroom, a chemical burn cannot. I have had COVID-19, I am fully vaccinated, and I strongly dislike wearing a mask because it fogs up my glasses. However, I will wear one to prevent the spread of a known disease in an area where it is known to have been. If “students are ready to live again,” as you say, should we not extend that courtesy to those around us? Do they not also have the right to live, to attend class in person and to avoid quarantine? I believe so. If you really want all this COVID-19 nonsense to go away, start acting like it. Jonah Kramer Freshman majoring in Civil Engineering

Winners and losers

How the Big 12 fared after Week 3 Ashton Slaughter Staff Reporter

The Big 12 had yet another winning weekend of college football. Overall, the conference went 8-1, as the only loss was Kansas, who was defeated by another Big 12 team, Baylor. Now, let’s see what teams played better than the others, and which squads need to improve quickly as the season is about to kick up a notch. 9: Kansas – Lost 45-7 against Baylor To be fair, Kansas went into halftime knowing they had a shot to win the game, as they found themselves down 14-7 at home against Baylor. However, the second half was all Bears. Baylor outscored the Jayhawks 31-0 in the second half, as the Jayhawks defense couldn’t find a way to stop the Bears offense. This isn’t necessarily all their fault though, as the offense couldn’t move the ball to keep the defense off the field. The Bears had 29 first downs throughout the game, while the Jayhawks only managed eight. 8: Oklahoma – Won 23-16 against Nebraska Oklahoma finding themselves this low on the list isn’t due to how bad they played, but more so how much better they should have played. Just one week after they dismantled Western California and looked to be heading in the right direction, they dip right back down. Oklahoma only beating Nebraska by seven isn’t a great look, even with defensive back D.J. Graham making a one-handed interception that rocked social media. Spencer Rattler, at one time the odds-on Heisman favorite, continued to underperform, as he only found the endzone once through the air, with just over 200 passing yards (although he did have a rushing touchdown as well). Rattler hasn’t played bad, he, like Oklahoma, just hasn’t lived up to expectations. 7: Oklahoma State: Won 21-20 against Bosie State Oklahoma State coming into this game lacked depth on both sides of the ball. However, the most glaring issue was the offense, as the Cowboys were missing three of their top receivers. Because of this, running back Jaylen Warren had to have the best game of his career as a Cowboy... which he did. Warren rushed for 218 yards and found the endzone twice, one of which was on a 75-yard run to get the Cowboys on the board. The defenses for both teams showed up, however, as neither team scored in the second half. The saving grace for the Cowboys team thus far has been their defense, after a while, one can only wonder how long they’ll be able to hold up without an offensive explosion. 6: Texas Tech – Won 54-21 against Florida Atlantic To put it simply, Texas Tech did what they do best: score. Tyler Shough, the quarterback for the Red Raiders, had the hot hand this game, as he finished with 399 yards and four touchdowns in the air. Shough, the Oregon transfer, hadn’t had his “Big 12” type of game yet, so this was a big moment for not only him but the Red Raiders as well. The Red Raiders receivers had a great outing because of this performance as well, as four of them finished

with 50+ yards. Although the Red Raiders haven’t started off the season as hot as they hoped, they are looking better week after week, right before conference play begins. 5: Baylor – Won 45-7 against Kansas Honestly, Baylor was on upset alert at halftime. They were only up 147, against a subpar Kansas team about to receive the ball to start the second half. However, the Bears put a quick end to any hope of the Jayhawks winning. After forcing a quick three and out on defense to start the half, the Bears scored on a one-play 69-yard touchdown, as R.J. Sneed ran through defenders to find the endzone. After that, the Bears offense erupted, scoring 31 unanswered points in the second half, to crush any hope of the Jayhawks defending their home turf. Baylor came in and ultimately took care of business, which is easier said than done. 4: Iowa State – Won 48-3 against UNLV After losing a hard-fought game to Iowa the week prior, Iowa State had to come out and prove themselves against a less-than-stellar UNLV team. A Cyclone in particular that had to prove himself was quarterback Brock Purdy, who threw three interceptions against the Hawkeyes and couldn’t seem to find any rhythm against them. Purdy found his rhythm this week. He had an 87.5% completion percentage, along with 288 passing yards with three touchdowns. It was without a doubt his most efficient and precise game. The Cyclones now look to get

back on track after a slow start to the season, as conference play is about to begin for the 14th ranked team in the nation. 3: Texas – Won 58-0 against Rice Going into this game, the biggest question was how Texas was going to respond after being upset by Arkansas. Even with a dud on the schedule in Rice (who has now dropped to 0-3), there were still question marks about how prepared the Longhorns may be. To answer all of those questions, they came prepared. The Longhorns ran all over the Owls, as they had 427 rushing yards on the day. This great rushing attack was led by running back Bijan Robinson, who had 127 yards and found the endzone three times. Even with these great numbers, Robinsons most impressive stat, was his yards per carry, at 9.8. He nearly picked up first downs every carry. Texas may not be back as former quarterback Sam Ehlinger once proclaimed, but they do seem to be back on track 2: Kansas State – Won 38-17 against Nevada With quarterback Skylar Thompson out indefinitely, Kansas State went into this game against a solid Nevada team unsure of how their season may be going forward. With the game being tied 17-17 after three quarters, it seemed as if it was going to come down to the wire... however, the Wildcats had other plans. The Wildcats scored 21 unanswered points, as they shut the door on the Wolf Pack. Running back Deuce Vaughn, led the charge for the Wildcats, as he rushed for 127 yards and picked

Abby Cage

up a touchdown on the day. This was a milestone day for him, as he reached 1,000 rushing yards in his Wildcat career, breaking Darren Sproles’ record by one game. The Wildcats continued their ground and pound approach and came out on top against a respectable Nevada squad. 1: West Virginia – Won 27-21 against Virginia Tech After splitting their first two games of the season, West Virginia needed a statement victory. With conference play about to start, and them facing Oklahoma right out of the gate, they needed to find themselves in the win column against a formidable opponent Enter– Virginia Tech. The Hokies have started off the year relatively strong, with a victory over North Carolina to set their season up. Although at half this looked like a runaway Mountaineers victory, as they found themselves up 24-7, the Hokies had a lot more fight left in them. This game came down to the wire, as the Mountaineers were defending their endzone with just under a minute remaining on a fourth down. The Mountaineers forced an incomplete pass, as their defense held strong and capped off a great victory for them. Although they let their foot off the gas in the second half, the Mountaineers showed that they have what it takes to beat good teams, which was a much-needed statement to make before heading to Norman next weekend. sports.ed@ocolly.com

IS GOD WORKING IN YOU?

In Philippians chapter 2, we are given direction from the apostle Paul about this very important matter. He tells us to look at Jesus while he was here on this earth and follow his example. “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.”(V5 NIV) What was his attitude? You see clearly the key in verse 8; : “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself.” Man, woman, youth; whoever we are and whatever our situation, we are to intentionally humble ourselves before God. Present ourselves to God so that we become a vessel for his work in and through us.

The Lord looks on humility in a very positive way. God says, “This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word.” (Is.66:2 NIV) God greatly respects those who greatly respect him and his word. This person is ready to hear and move with God. “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.” (Ps.25:9 NIV) If we stop and think about it; this person is the only one who will pay any attention to God’s will. Pride and self-centeredness are great hindrances to God working in us. The apostle says, offer your body as a living sacrifice. He does not say “get religious.” You are humbling yourself before God for his will to be done; an attitude of humility. This is what Jesus did. As you do the same, God will lead and work in you.

ALTERATIONS BY APPOINTMENT

The Apostle tells us; “...for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.” (Phil.2:13 NIV) This seems an important statement that God would actually work in you and me. How can it happen?

Right place, right time Rebound goal lifts OSU to 1-0 win Adam Engel Staff Reporter Olvyia Dowell with her arms raised above her head, danced into Hannah Webb’s arms. Twenty-three seconds into the second half, Dowell neatly threaded a driven ground ball who Webb quickly one timed into the hands of Mekell Moss, Weber State’s goalkeeper. The force of the shot was too much for Moss as the ball ricocheted off the right post and to Gabriella Coleman, who finished off the scraps. It was the lone score in Oklahoma State’s 1-0 win against Weber State on Sunday afternoon at Neal Patterson Stadium in Stillwater. “Props to Hannah Webb for making that shot,” Coleman said. “It feels pretty good for me to finish that off for the team.” Coleman scored her third of the season, while the assist was Webb’s first of the season. Since scoring her second career goal last week, Webb has seen more scoring opportunities. “I’ve been getting in the positions and getting great passes from my teammates so you got to make those count in those situations,” she said. Despite that goal, OSU, which recorded 16 shots were able place only four on net. “It became just a sort of grind,” coach Colin Carmichael said. “So, not our best performance but we’ll take the win.” The Cowgirls were dominated in possession and every other statistical category besides the final score, but were unable to take advantage of prime scoring opportunities. “Very frustrating (to not score on 12 corner kick attempts),” he said. “We talk about it all the time and we started to play in a couple of short corners to try and mix it up a little bit because we haven’t look that dangerous on corners this year.” Carmichael said his squad didn’t play as hard as needed lacked urgency in the hot and sunny matinee. Defensively, Evie Vitali, OSU’s goalkeeper faced one shot on goal, a goal line save to preserve the lead late in the second half. Chris Becker
