Show me the money OSU receives $6.5 million for Algal blooms

Jenny Maupin Last Friday, the Environmental Protection Agency awarded Oklahoma State University and six other universities $6.5 million in funding to study the harmful growth of algae across the country. The seven universities, including the University of Idaho, Illinois and South Florida, will study ways to improve different

areas of harmful algal blooms or HAB’s. “Harmful algal blooms are a serious and persistent problem across all 50 states,” EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler said in a press release. OSU will focus on creating technology that will absorb nutrients from agricultural runoff, with Dr. Allen Apblett and Dr. Nick Materer leading the study. “The technology will provide a sustainable solution for the prevention of hazardous algal blooms while also reducing the environmental and financial costs associated with the decontamina-

tion of ponds and the production of fertilizers,” Apblett said in an OSU press release. The project will use novel materials that can be used as a time-released fertilizer in the future, Apblett said in the press release. This grant is the largest grant to support a nationwide effort to reduce HAB’s. Under President Trump, the EPA has awarded $8.5 million in grant funding to research methods to reduce excess nutrients in watersheds, according to the EPA website. com

Top five local eateries in Stillwater By Maleeha Hameed In a world recovering from a pandemic, it has become more popular to eat out as a social activity. I’m going to give you an unprofessional food critic’s opinion on the best places to eat in Stillwater. 5. Thai Café You’ve been living under a rock if you haven’t heard of Thai Café’s coconut crusted chicken. This place is famousfor it, and I’ll tell you from experience, it’s pretty delicious. One great thing about Thai Café is that the portions are large enough for two people, so you can split a dish and save some cash too. 4. The Ranchers Club If everyone at Oklahoma State University had a meal plan, the Ranchers Club would easily catapult itself to the No. 1 spot. As it is now, most of us mooch off our freshman friends, but despite that, the Ranchers Club has some delicious options if you’re searching for a fancy dinner spot. The Classic American Cheeseburger is to die for, and those fries are better than Whataburger.

2. Thai Loco One of the more underground locations on this list, Thai Loco made it to the coveted No. 2 spot for a reason. Thai Café’s weakness is that you feel the weight of your meal after eating there, and that is also Thai Loco’s strength. With tacos that are small enough for a snack, Thai Loco incorporates traditional Thai food in a taco. 1. Fruity Patootie I wouldn’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of Fruity Patootie, as it’s relatively new. But this place is No. 1 for Claire Boomer a reason. If you’ve never had a smoothie Fruity Patootie's on Main Street offers a great variety of food. bowl, then I demand you have your first one from Fruity Patootie, which is a food 3. Finally, 45 minutes for its signature blueberry waffles.
