I also suspect that we cherish dogs because their unblemished souls make us wish - consciously or unconsciously - that we were as innocent as they are, and make us yearn for a place where innocence is universal and where the meanness, the betrayals, and the cruelties of this world are unknown�. Slipped discs When thinking about backs, youmay have heard the term “slipped disc”. You or your dog may have experienced the misfortune yourself, or in conversation you may have heard someone talking about having a “slipped disc”. But what on earth does it actually mean? First…a quick recap from last time: We learnt that the spinal cord runs from the brain, through a “tunnel” in each vertebrae (backbone), all the way to the tail. Nerves pass out from the spinal cord, between the vertebrae, to give our body various functions. We also learnt that between each vertebrae, there is a rubber-like “disc” that acts as a shock absorber between the vertebrae. So, a “slipped disc” is when the disc that sits between two vertebrae moves out of place (or “slips”). Usually, the disc moves as a result of trauma. When the disc slips out of its normal place, it may either push upwards and press on the spinal cord, or slip sideways and put pressure on the nerves. When this occurs, the pressure that the disc places on the spinal cord or nerves causes

the cells in them to die because they lose their blood supply, and this blocks their function. Aside from being extremely painful, if the spinal cord is “squashed” by a disc, nerve signals cannot get past the squashed area. This may lead to paralysis. Slipped discs are considered an urgent situation. Generally emergency surgery is required to remove the slipped disc(s), in the hope that the compressed nerves and spinal cord will have their blood supply restored, so full functioning can resume. However despite surgery, if there is permament cel death in the nerves/ spinal cord, then there may be permament, lifelong paralysis. Thank you Dr. Glen Kolenc (Australia)
