Why Do We Have

Dog shows? Written by Mr João Ricardo Citino (Tucky Bulldogs) and Mr Carlos Albuquerque ( Javary Bulldogs)

The first dog shows date back the beginning of the last century, along with the first Breed standards and the will to follow those standards to improve each breed by comparing living stock. That´s the starting point for our hobby and still one of the most important parts of it. Competition among dogs has the main impact to develop a certain Breed. When someone starts to breed dogs or just think about it, going to dogs hows becomes a good idea as the dogs that win in the ring will be an influence to both experienced and novice enthusiasts. Dog shows are also great opportunities to meet people and socialize with friends that share the same passion for dogs. Veteran breeders will be more than happy to help and give some guidance and advice to the beginners. Even experienced breeders will learn while watching and participating at dogs hows, because when we compare our own dogs to our peers it becomes easier to evaluate our own work. We also expect that a good judge will make the right choices while in the ring, making things easier to us, as audience, to evaluate and compare different dogs. A breeder has to be humble enough to accept a judge´s decision even though he might disagree. But the learning process is not easy and some decisions made at the ring sometimes are hard to be understood from outside of the ring, from, a distance. There are just many details involved. Having a good sportsmanship is paramount to be able to enjoy a day at the dogs how, winning or losing. You might disagree with a judge´s decision but you have to respect it and

also respect your fellow competitors. I´m totally against some so-called breeders that are around for years and never show their dogs because they are afraid of losing. They consider that judges are never good enough for their dogs. I just don´t think a breeder can be considered one if they don´t show at all. You have to at least compare your dogs to other dogs to be able to check your own progress. Of course a judge´s decision is important as well as winning prizes and awards, but simply comparing your dogs to others is a way to evaluate your work towards the betterment of the Breed. Winning is also not the only way to see if your are in the right track. You have to always see the big picture. For instance, let me explain about what we have in Brazil. We have an official Bulldog Club (the only one recognized by FCI and by The Brazilian Kennel Club) for just 11 years, which is a very short time compared to some traditional Bulldog Clubs around the world that are over a 100 years old. But in a short period of time the improvement of the Breed in Brazil is really dramatic if we compare what we had then and now. The competition can be something good if the breeders respect each other but, of course, everyone wants to win. So that feeling made people here import many dogs from the US and Europe. Not only that, we bred them and the results started to appear in the ring. In 2013, both English judges awarded Best Of Breed to a Brazilian bred dog at our Nationals. This is something huge for a Country that was just crawling in the hobby a little over a decade ago. So the Club that we are part (ABRABULL) has a tremendous impact for the betterment of the Breed as we are trying to improve our own dogs year after year. The Brazilian Nationals is the pinnacle of this, once an year. The date we mark in our calendars and that we all look forward. Still some people, most of the them not even Club members will keep breeding and not showing their dogs in All Breed shows or in Specialty Page 8

shows. I´m sorry to say that but I have no respect for those breeders and I don´t even consider then breeders. Maybe they can be considered “dog sellers” or “dog producers” and that´s it. If you don´t compete, you never get defeated, that´s probably their motto. And since nowadays the quality of the dogs that we have in Brazil is really improving, there is no shame in losing. The biggest loser is who stays at home trashing the dogs that are in the ring. Do you have a better dog? So go ahead and show it! Hmmm, we all know this is not going to happen, because they are not good enough for the ring. Sorry to reveal their secret…. shhhhhhhh! The sport of breeding dogs is a lot more than winning or losing. It´s about the passion that we all have for a breed, in our case, our lovely Bulldogs. And improvement in our dogs will only happen if are able to detect our dogs flaws and work to be better and produce better dogs year after year.

The Story Of Jovi by: Ivo Krijnen

SEPTEMBER 2014

When i was 12 years old i had a dream…… I begged my parents to get me a english bulldog. In my nieghbourhood there was one english bulldog it was love at first sight even i was that young. As much as i could i walked whit that bulldog. My parents always told me get one of your own when you are old enough. When i became 18 my father siad to me i have a surprise something you have always wanted….he opend his van and there it was a english bulldog but a shame it was a concrete bulldog. My parents had a flowershop and when i was old enough i helped in the store. When i was 22 years old by surcomstances i took over the flowershop and a busy ten years followed. In 2005 i met the love of my life, my life changed. My life became more then work and we dicided to have no children but to take a english bulldog. Together with my girlfriend we visit a dogshow in holland to let her see what a english bulldog was. She didn’t knew the breed. That day she also fell in love with bulldogs and we saw the type of bulldog we would like to have. We met a dutch breeder with a magnificient bull. His name was heavy…..that day he became dutch champion ( we heard that later). We had contact with the breeder and they would have a litter within half a year. From day one of the birth of the litter we follewed them trough many pictures on facebook. After four weeks we had to choose the pup we liked. Before we went to the breeder we allready knew witch pup it was going to be…..when we saw him it was love at first sight….. a beautifull red guy with big brown eyes….his name from that day on was Hazes. After a year we decided that we wanted a little brother for our boy. And the breeder would have a litter from the famous and beautifull dad heavy. So when hazes was 1 ½ years old we brought home his brother jovi. A white polar bear of a bulldog.

When jovi was about a year old we got a phonecall of the breeder if we would like to participate i a dogshow with all of jovi’s brothers and sisters. Wauw a great opportunity to see all those cute puppies again so we went to the dogshow with jovi and it was really great to see all of them. But beside that jovi won his class and the judge was nothing but positive about him. He saw that it was the first show for jovi and he said it would be a shame to do nothing with this dog…..he is going to be a champion. At the end of the show the breeder asked us if we would like to start with dogshows with jovi and she would like to show him. We went home a little bit confused what was happend that day……it was our first dogshow ever and our dog

participated in juniorclass. With 43 entrees he became fourth….wauw half a year before we didnt even knew what showing was….then a period of less showing starts, and showing abroad in belgium….to become dutch champion jovi had to be 27 months old…..the evening before the first show when he was old enough the breeder called us……unfortunatly she wasn’t able to show jovi anymore…….that evening we made the discission that i would show jovi myself….we had come so far with him he only needed ¼ point to become dutch champion. So we went to the show the next morning and i showed jovi myself. I was so nervous but i releyed on jovi and his experience. And jovi became best of breed that day and also became dutch champion….. We also started showing jovi in belgium and in belgium he became belgium champion in five shows, there has to be a year and one day between your first and last point and you need five points…….

did really great…..we decided that we would have to train jovi and the most importent thing was he going to like it? Could he get ajusted to the showworld? If not it was not a option. After three months he would have his first cacshow. Every week we drove to the training to accustom him. His first show in juniorclass he became third. The commend was; a great dog but a little bit to much waith. So we had to put him on a diet lol. The second show he got his first point to become dutch junior champion and he became best of breed. Within a total of four shows he was dutch junior champion ( you need 3 points). Every show we where over the moon and so proud of our boy. With every show he got more confedend and became more relaxed en his handler (the breeder] en he became a team. That summer we went to worlddogshow in Paris and Page 37

the jovi

Amsterdam winner.

Now jovi is 4 and ½ year old and he is; Dutch junior champion, Dutch champion,

He became third on crufts in postgraduate class, and entered 2 times in champion class, 4th place junior class worlddogshow, International Champion, Belgium champion, Belgian winner, Danish champion, Luxembourg champion, German champion. And his last recieved title 23 august this year ; german winner. I had a dream when i was twelve ….. no i am 37 I have a great girlfriend and two gorgeous and beautifull english bulldogs and one of them is a real multi champ with children of his own…..wauw…need i say more

Judging in Australia by Kim Meyer

M

y CC, BOB & Nonsporting Group Winner at the Australia Day Sunset Evening Fireworks Championship Show held at what Google Maps assures us is Orchard Hills, Sydney last night, despite being a lovely level playing field with a top quality entry where Erskine Park what was was, was this magnificent Bulldog, Ch Janayin Who Wears Da Pantz. I will

exhibits never surrendered, not a one of them, although one or two paused briefly in their perambulation around the ring as if to consider the merits of such sound and fury as art, before continuing nonchalantly on their way. I declare the entire entry worthy of the status of Honorary Gundog, for temperaments have come a long way, baby, bloody oath they have, and not a one was gunshy in the slightest. That top Striyan bloke, Winston Churchill, though a closet lover of the French Poodle in his time, would doubtless have clasped Ch Pantz to his bosom proudly in a gesture of mateship. This boy epitomises Old

Cassius Clay variety. You young people of today gaze blankly at me, but Cassius moved like a butterfly and stung like a bee and so did Ch Pantz last night. None of your punchdrunk Mohammed Ali shuffle, thank you. He puts his shoulder forward, he rolls, but not excessively, and he is nimble and light on his toes and boy does he power around the ring. His heavy front is beautifully made and sturdy, pear body and roach not unlike that of the judge. And his proud owner, Donna Whillock, moves him at just the right pace. I didn’t recognize him from the gawky youngster I awarded RUBIG to in Young a while back, but I saw him first folks and in the interim he has matured into a multiple Specialty BIS winner. I don’t know when it became politically correct to shoot dwarves out of cannons, but I’m afraid Kimmy says no to the current fashion of exploding into the ring faster than a speeding bullet. Dramatic it may be, but time and again dogs I would be most happy to award are moved much faster than their little legs can carry them and certainly faster than these tired old eyes care to focus. Frequently this creates the illusion of unsoundness in perfectly sound animals as they break stride, trip over themselves or their handlers and, as speeding bullets are wont to do, collide unfortunately with immovable objects.

leave it to the Francophones to protest that he is a British Bulldog, but we don’t always state the bleeding obvious in Orstriya mate and we played a recording of the national anthem to prove it - not a single person present on the grounds could even lip sync the words - before Ch Pantz here fought them pugnaciously on the beaches as we were subjected to a fireworks event of the sort with which Sydney has become synonymous, if not previously at a dog show. It was not necessarily the sort of backing track you might think to request from your dog show DJ, but the Non sporting

Sourmug in the finest traditional ways and in the modern healthy revision endorsed by Fitness First and the RSPCA and others of our former allies who have since become undercover operatives for the Utopian forces of animal liberation. Ch Pantz achieves great lay-back and the flattened skull profile associated with the finest of his breed but without a hint of breathing difficulties, cute snuffly, call the paramedics stat this dog is choking to death rattles that the Kennel Club in Brussels has declared verboten. Ch Pantz does not do heavy breathing and he can scarper round the ring at a fair lick. He may be a pugilist, but of the

Page 61

I do not dump dogs. Ever. But too often these are top dogs with very experienced handlers who should know better, but they are no longer in control. I always give them a chance to redeem themselves but they seem unable to slow down to the steady, collected pace that suits the dog and that I request. Do recall that I have to answer to the late Dicky Ouvaroff who let’s me have it in no uncertain terms from Cloud Nine just behind and to the right of Saint Peter if I drop her standards. On this one, I can actually hear her booming down NO, NO, NO, NO GENTLEMEN, NO! She was very much present in my Honorary Gundog Non-sporting ring, last night.
