Bouncer arrest over tourist death
Let the battle commence at one of Mallorca’s most lively - and most colourful festivals
A BRITISH doorman has been detained over the death of a British tourist. The Magaluf club bouncer allegedly assaulted Aaron Henderson,30, outside popular Punta Ballena bar, Mulligan’s. He became the second tourist to die in the party resort in just one week after Three Lions worker Natalie Cormack, 19, fell to her death from her balcony. A third man, believed to be British, is also said to remain in a ‘serious condition’ in hospital after a drunken 4am fall from a BH Hotel balcony. Henderson, 30, from Northern Ireland,

A LEADING Mallorca businessman has told the Olive Press how he paid €30,000 fine this month after inspec-a tors turned up unannounced at one of his rural rental properties. The expat, who has asked not to be named, paid a 50% reduced penalty within the ‘two-week discount period’ after originally being fined €60,000. AN estimated 50,000 antiBrexit supporters have protested on the streets of London. The People’s March for Europe went from Park Lane to Parliament Square where the mixed crowd heard speeches from Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative politicians. There were heated scenes outside the Lord Moon of the Mall pub when Leave and Remain supporters traded insults before Remainer Middleton Mann defused the situation by hugging one of the Leave supporters. “Remaining is all about kindness, unity and togetherness and the spirit of solving problems together,” Londoner Mann, 51, a creative agency manager told the Olive Press. “It didn’t solve anything by booing at him so I gestured at him to come over and have a hug. We are not going to get anywhere fighting.” Further up the Mall, Boris Johnson lookalike Drew Galdron entertained crowds with a live music performance, holding a Theresa May puppet. “Since anti-Brexit events like the Number 10 vigil started I have been at quite a few of them performing songs lampooning Boris,” he said.

Last month, leaked police documents revealed that Mac Hotels had allegedly been hit with €4m of sickness claims, some 800 altogether. The rise and downfall of Mallorca’s Tolo Cursach
London calling
A WELL known island expat has denied recruiting British holidaymakers to file fake sickness claims on behalf of UK law firms. Brit Laura Cameron insisted a gang of touts who worked for her did not target tourists to persuade them to file false holiday claims. Instead, her Mallorca-based ‘tiquiteros’ merely collected data for a range of different purposes, she told1 a16/06/2017 Palma Untitled-1.pdf court.

Cameron, 28, told Judge Maria Perez Ruiz however, that her company Elite Project Marketing was merely ‘an information collection company’ for British marketing firms. “We collect telephone numbers and names of British tourists and we sell the data to marketing companies, which buy telephone numbers and names in case anything happens during their

holiday in Mallorca, this includes food poisoning,” she insisted. "We collect information by talking to tourists on the street, but we do not ask them if they have had a food problem, the data we collect is for many different purposes.” The Calvia-based entrepreneur - whose mother Deborah is a millionaire businesswoman who has lived in Mallorca for three decades - admitted she sold the information to three UK law firms and marketing agen-
cies including UK Holiday Claims and Ruby Diamond. Another firm, HH Law Limited paid around €5,500 for around 1,000 names and numbers - equaling €5.5 per contact. This one company alone paid her €34,717 between October and December 2016, police reports showed. Her touts were made around €110 for each tourist that ended up filing a sickness claim, although one, Simon Robert F, insisted he never encouraged them to submit false complaints. Prosecutors pointed out that lawyers in the UK were offering victims as much as €18,000 in compensation and a 98% success rate. Investigators for the hotels Continues on Page 4

Cursach witness claims case has ‘destroyed his life’ EXCLUSIVE By Joe Wallen
A PROTECTED witness in the Tolo Cursach case has revealed that cooperating with the authorities has ‘destroyed his life’. As well as being beaten up, having his tyres slashed and being spat at in the street, he was hand-delivered a ‘personal obituary’ warning him off the case. It comes after so-called ‘Witness 29’ gave evidence on 25 separate occasions, in part detailing how the nightclub

horror movie mogul forced Eastern European women into prostitution. Despite this, ‘King of the Night’ Cursach was controversially freed on bail last month after judges ruled he was neither a flight risk nor had any witness been intimidated for six months. “I’ve been beaten up, had a
tooth and a couple of ribs broken, I’ve been left an obituary in my name, I’ve been followed, I’ve been told that if I don’t leave Mallorca I’ll be dead, I’ve been spat on at a cash dispenser and my car tires have been slashed...All because I cooperated with police and judicial system,” the former Tito worker said.

A DRUG trafficker has been arrested at Palma airport with 62 balloons of cocaine and heroin inside his body. Police were doing a routine check on a flight from the Netherlands when the man began to act suspicious, causing a further inquiry leading to the discovery of the drugs.
TWO expat bar owners have been sentenced to 18 months after replacing the credit card terminals of a neighbouring bar with their own, collecting €33,000 from their rival’s customers. The two thieves, an Italian man and a Bulgarian woman, admitted their crimes of fraud before a judge. They have been ordered to pay €4,000 each in compensation. They won’t see the inside of the jail cell as their sentences have been suspended as long as they make their monthly payments to the victim.
A TWISTED daycare centre owner made toddlers eat their own vomit and locked them in the bathroom in the dark. Carmen Luciane, 47, has been sentenced to six months after it emerged she had been mistreating children at the Palma centre. The abuse centred around six infants, between the ages of 10 and 30 months.
The attacks led to a Romanian working for Cursach, Florian Bogdan, to be handed a three year jail sentence in February. “Despite this, I want to continue, but if I had known what I was in for, I might have thought twice about collaborating,” he revealed. “Witness protection is a sham. They tell you ‘don’t worry, we’re with you now’, and they give you a number and so on. “But these mafias who aren’t scared of the police or anything and I’m totally alone here.” He is not the only witness in the case to have complained about abuse and threats. One individual has reported being followed, another accused a Cursach associate of trying to run her off the road and another lady found her tires slash. The former ‘King of the Night’ faces 16 separate charges including homicide, drug trafficking, bribery and money laundering. If found guilty he could face up to 80 years in prison. The trial continues.
Tragic deaths From front
had been out partying with friends on the strip when witnesses claim he was set upon by three men. “Aaron had been standing outside a bar in Magaluf when someone ran over, punched him and ran off,” his father revealed. “Aaron had a massive bleed on the brain and there was nothing that could be done for him.” The father of four received a severe punch to the head and was found collapsed on the Magaluf strip, passing away shortly after at Son Espases Hospital. Cormack’s death is not believed to be suspicious. Allegedly, she returned home drunk after a shift at work but discovered she had forgotten her keys and locked out of her seventh floor Eden Rock apartment. She attempted to climb onto her balcony from a friends flat but slipped and fell. The tragic incidents come despite Spanish authorities pledging to crackdown on excessive drunken behaviour in Magaluf. The mayor of Calvia published a list of 64 things tourists could be fined for while in the resort, such as public nakedness or fighting. However, if the regrettable start of the season is anything to go by they seem to have had little effect in curbing the outlandish behaviour the resort is infamous for? Benidorm has NOT been axed! THE hit series Benidorm might not be over after all. Despite a slurry of headlines, followed up by local rags in Spain, the show’s creator has insisted the popular ITV show has NOT been axed. Fans across Spain and the UK were devastated after news broke that the comedy series’ 10th season would be its last. But creator Darren Litten, 47, has now said that may not be the case.
He said he had merely sparked concern the long-running programme had been cancelled this week, after posting ‘Crazy to think Wednesday will be the last episode of Benidorm!’ Yet after the finale aired on Wednesday, Derren admitted he was only referring to the last episode of the season, not the entire show. But when asked if it will definitely return, he said: “The honest truth is I don’t know.”

Doctoring? HUNDREDS of holiday sickness claims have been put under the spotlight after a British doctor was revealed to have made €136,000 writing reports citing food poisoning. A clear conflict of interest has been declared in at least 70 of Dr Zuber Bux’s cases after it was revealed his wife works at a UK law firm which instructed him in some of the claims. The issue came to light during the trial of two British holidaymakers, from Liverpool, who claimed they became ill during a Thomas Cook holiday to Spain. The court heard how the tour operator was not made aware of the relationship between Dr Bux, 47 and Mrs Bux, 42, who is a partner at AMS lawyers.

684 holiday sickness reports for medical legal agency MLLS at £180 (€205) a report, earning him a total of £123,120 (€140,000). Ian Denham, representing Thomas Cook, said Dr Bux’s reports were supposed to be independent but all followed ‘the same template and come to the same conclusion’, which was that the claimants in each case had suffered stomach bugs on holiday. Dr Bux denied leaving out details from his reports in a bid to boost their chances of success but said: “Perhaps my reports weren’t comprehensive enough.” AMS have since sacked Bux

citing ‘problems beginning to be raised’ over his competence. Dr Bux and his wife deny any wrongdoing. In total, 27 solicitors’ firms in the UK are being investigated by legal watchdog the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority (SRA), over their links to the fake sickness claim scandal. It is not known if AMS is one of them. The rising number of package holiday illness claims has become an ‘epidemic’, with a whopping 500% increase in recent years. 5,000 claims were issued in 2013, which raised to 35,000 in 2016, revealed The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA). This is despite the fact travel industry data on global trends reported that the incidences of sickness in holiday resorts have declined in the past few years. It is costing the travel industry upwards of €300m a year to cover the cost of claims. Opinion Page 6

Tourist bosses to justify rise of controversial tourist tax By Gillian Keller
A SERIES of brochures and plaques are to go up highlighting the good work of the Balearic tourist tax. The plaques are to be erected at sites funded by the controversial tax that doubles in summer and has been unpopular with some tourists abroad.
More than 50 kilos of expired meats ready to sell to local hotels and restaurants have been seized and four owners detained for crimes against public health. Agents also inspected the delivery vans, finding many of them without up-to-date ITV tests. The crackdown comes after agents found similar rotten meats and health and safety violations at Marratxí's Cárnicas Vicente and Inca's Miguel Socias Soler SL.

visitors will pay a fee per night, with a 50% discount after nine days. Hotels with a 5-star rating have a tax of 4€ per night, which is reduced to only 1€ in the off season, while 4-star hotels are €3. Holiday rentals and 3-star hotels are €2 a night in season, and €0.50 in the low season. Many other European cities have a similar tourist tax, with 5-star hotels in Italy costing €7 per person per night in Rome, and €5 in
Florence. In Berlin the tax is five percent of the hotel cost, and in Vienna and Salzburg, tourists pay just over three percent of the hotel bill. In Bruges the fee is flat rate of €2 per person per night, while Brussels has complex formula that can be expensive. Prague, Paris, Nice and Lyon all have a tourist tax below €2 a night. Portugal, Hungary, and Greece also have a tourist tax paid at hotels.

OPINION Embarrassment! Brits used to be known for their manners and for the respect they showed others. But now, thanks to an ever-growing bunch of morons, we are becoming labelled the ‘sickmen of Europe’, as scores and scores of holidaymakers in Spain and beyond attempt to cash in on fake sickness claims. In the name of greed, tourists are feigning illness to claim their money back from hardworking hoteliers and businesses here and further afield. But now, to add insult to injury, it looks as though even doctors at home could be riding the gravy train after it was revealed a British doctor made more than €120,000 by signing almost 700 sickness claims for the past six years - despite having NO training in gastroenterology. Let’s hope those faking to make a quick buck are named and shamed and face the full punishment of the law.
Tax can be good MALLORCA’S sustainable eco tax has just ‘doubled’ for the high season, but the benefits are what should be making the news. Despite complaints from tourists paying the tax, the funds collected are making a major contribution to the local environment. The tourist tax, which has been in action since July 2016, is used to preserve and enhance natural parks, such as the Tramuntana mountains. Rehabilitating historic sites and buildings is also a priority, such as the upcoming €2 million investment to restore Palma’s Temple Towers. The tax has also promoted tourism, and in turn job creation. It is also used for vocational training programs as well as the impact of tourists on the local environment. While it may cost tourists a little extra, surely it’s a small price to pay to keep our island the most beautiful in the Mediterranean.

After more than half a century of waging war against Madrid, ETA, the Basque terrorist movement, has laid down its arms. The bloody conflict is over, but how long will it take to heal the wounds?
I
Report by David Baird
T was a bizarre, nerve-wracking rendezvous. On a street near the San Sebastian waterfront a stranger had thrust into my hand a roughly scrawled map. “Mikel will meet you,” he said. “He’ll be wearing a blue jacket. Don’t worry. He’ll know who you are.” Now I was sitting in a cafe in Hendaye just across the border in France, waiting to meet a member of the terrorist group ETA (Euskadi ta Askatasuna or Basque Country and Freedom). Suddenly he was there, sitting down opposite me. ‘Mikel’ was young, goodlooking and quietly spoken. Nothing wild-eyed or revolutionary about him. Trained as an economist, he and three idealistic friends had joined ETA. Pursued by the Spanish police, five years earlier he had taken refuge in France. He denied that he had ever killed anybody, but admitted: “I carried out some operations. Nothing special, planting
‘I carried out some operations... planting bombs in government buildings’ bombs in government buildings, that sort of thing. But If I had been required to kill a policeman, yes, I would have done it.” Despite his mild manner, he was ready to defend violence - ‘it grows from a consciousness of national and social oppression, from concern about political-social problems.’ Finally however, his branch of ETA had decided to seek independence for the Basque Country through political rather than violent means. That was why he had agreed to meet me, to put across the so-called Poli-Milis’ point of view. “Armed struggle has reached a dead end,” said Mikel, in my dispatch, written for The Economist magazine and later the Boston Globe. That was in 1982. But ETA’s more fanatical followers did not renounce violence. Only this year, this very month, did ETA’s hard-liners finally lay down their arms for good - after a campaign which claimed more than 850 lives. To this day there are scores of unsolved crimes, unexplained disappearances, families whose lives were torn apart in what came to be known as ‘los años de plomo’ (literally ‘years of lead’ i.e. of bullets). ETA was formed back in 1959 by students determined to create an independent Basque state incorporating parts of northern Spain and southern France. In 1968 it carried out its first assassination, shooting a notorious secret police chief, Meliton Manzanas, in San Sebastian.

FRONTLINE: Expat journalist David Baird saw first hand the tensions ramping up in the Basque region
POLICE PRESENCE: A regular occurence on Basque streets
Its most spectacular coup came in 1973 when it killed Franco’s prime minister and heir apparent Luis Carrero Blanco by blowing up his car. After the dictator’s death extremist groups piled on the pressure. ETA saw it as a chance to blast Madrid into granting independence to their region. In return, right-wing death squads killed alleged ETA supporters. Many innocents were caught in the crossfire. Inevitably, covering the turbulent days after Franco’s death, I met some of the victims, including fellow journalist José Antonio Martínez Soler, editor of a weekly magazine. On February 2, 1976, he was seized
and driven into the country. Demanding details of a banned military union, the kidnappers beat him on the head and soles of his feet. He was dumped in a forest, managing to free himself from his bonds before he froze to death. Less fortunate was José María Portell. He acted as a go-between in secret negotiations between Madrid and ETA. I interviewed him in the Bilbao office where he edited the paper, Gaceta del Norte. Not long afterwards I met his widow, Carmen. She told me: “It was a normal day. He left for the office and then I heard the sound of shots. I found him lying next to his car. ETA claimed he had somehow betrayed them but he was just trying to use his contacts to help reach an agreement.” That occurred on June 28, 1978. But the killing was far from over. To combat Basque terrorism the government secretly created its own terror group, GAL (Grupos Antiterroristas de Liber-

Fire ban SPEAKER: Obama coming to Porto
Campaign for change A LEADING expat has secured the speaker of a lifetime at a high profile climate change conference. Marbella-based Pancho Campo has confirmed former US president Barack Obama for this summer’s Climate Change Leadership Summit in Portugal. This will be the fourth climate change conference the Chilean expat has organised in the Iberian peninsula, each focusing on the wine industry. The businessman (left), who works closely with Al Gore’s green organisation, told the Olive Press his main goal is to ‘empower people’ to tackle climate change. “Whether you are a student, a politician or a CEO, we want to engage them and put into practice what Obama and the others are going to tell you,” he urged. Pancho, whose British wife runs the American College in Spain, became passionate about climate change after witnessing its effects on skiing trips and ‘unbearably hot’ summers in Florida 15 years ago.

WHALES and dolphins are under threat after a controversial underwater project was relaunched, claim ecologists. The noises emitting from the so-called MedSalt-2 project are believed to frighten whales and dolphins and can even be deadly. The purpose of the scheme, which uses high pressure air guns to drill offshore, is officially to gain geophysical data of the 1.5km deep salt basin that lines the bottom of the sea. However green groups believe that the central government project is being undertaken to line the way for future drilling for oil or gas. “It is a oil and gas project which the PP party is dressing up as a scientific project,” said Island Environment Minister Vincens Vidal.

However, project boss Daniel García-Castellanos insists the purpose is not to find oil and claims that the regional government has got it wrong. “Nobody understands it,” he said. “At some point they will realise that it has nothing to do with oil.”
A TOTAL ban on all fires in or around forests has been declared around the Balearics. The ban until October 15 is vital after 150 hectares of the islands were destroyed last year from 93 different fires. A shocking 90% of forest fires are caused by human error, either intentionally or by negligence. This year there have already been 18 fires fought by firemen.
Not so slick EMERGENCY services have been dispatched after a cruise ship suffered a serious oil leak. The leak from the TUI-run Marella Dream ship occurred just one month after an angry protest was held in opposition to ‘out of control’ tourism in Mallorca. The demonstration, organised by GOB-Mallorca, focused on the arrival of the world’s largest cruise ship, the 228,081 tonne Symphony of the Seas. Spain’s Maritime Authority will now decide whether to impose penalties on TUI.

THE Consell de Ibiza has accused Netflix of 'fraud' after it filmed its new movie Ibiza in Croatia. The film, which portrays the party side of the island similar to Magaluf's sometimes seedy reputation, did not have cooperation from the Ibiza Ministry of Tourism. The department of tourism has expressed its 'outrage' and announced it will study possible legal actions against the film, 'for taking advantage of the name Ibiza without filming on the island'. The film stars Gillian Jacobs from Community and Richard Madden from the hit series Game of Thrones and premieres May 25.

FILM SET: Sevilla ampitheatre
Pablo Picasso could break own record at auction this year as painting expected to fetch more than €83 million
MAESTRO: Picasso
A HISTORIC site in Andalucia has been closed off to the public for the filming of Game of Thrones. The Roman ampitheatre in Italica, in Santiponce, Sevilla, will be awash with cast favourites from the hit fantasy show

A PICASSO painting is expected to fetch more than $100 million (€83 m) at auction this week, and could help break a record. Young Girl with a Flower Basket, painted in 1905 during the Spanish artist’s Rose Period, is being sold by David Rockefeller Jr through auction house Christie’s in the US. The painting is a tender and haunting depiction of a nude girl with a basket of red blossoms and was first collected by David Rockefeller Sr

from Gertrude Stein in 1968. It depicts a waif who was selling flowers around Montmartre in France at the time. “That probably represented the most expensive single set of investments he made in art,” said David Rockefeller Jr., the late philanthropist’s son. Now the work stars in his parents’ collection which went on the block from May 8 at Christie’s. The Picasso, estimated at about
€83 million, is the highest valued of more than 1,500 Rockefeller lots, which include other Impressionist masterpieces, duck decoys and the dinner service that Napoleon took to his exile in Elba. In the next two weeks in New York alone, another 45 Picasso works are estimated to fetch more than $305 million (€255 million). Sellers include embattled billionaire casino mogul Steve Wynn and the estate of Joan and Preston Robert Tisch. “Picasso is collected across the globe,” said Nicholas Maclean, a co-founder of Eykyn Maclean gallery in New York and London. “For most people when they are starting out, he is the artist they look to buy." With $212 million (€177m) of Picasso works having already sold at auction this year, 2018 is shaping up as the best ever for the Spanish master and could see him break the current annual record of $568 million (€475m) set in 2015, which he set himself when his Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) fetched €149m.
GOOD CAUSE: Radio One Mallorca
Radiothon marathon RADIO One Mallorca is hosting its annual 24hour live radiothon for charity on May 11 and 12. The radio hosts encourage local companies to sponsor an hour of the show, or listeners can donate to request a song or set a challenge to the DJs. The broadcast starts at 8am on Friday, and will be live until Saturday midday.

Kiefer goes country in Spain ACTOR Kiefer Sutherland will be appearing in Spain next month as you’ve never seen him before - as a country music singer. The son of movie star Donald Sutherland is better-known for his role as Jack Bauer in the TV Series 24 and films like The Lost Boys, Flatliners, A Few Good Men and A Time to Kill. But the British-Canadian actor is a bit of a country boy at heart.
And he’ll be here on a double date to air his debut album, Down in a Hole, playing to Madrid’s Teatro Barceló on June 16 and Barcelona’s Sala Bikini the following day as part of his Reckless Tour 2018. The album was released two summers ago but Sutherland promotes it with sporadic tours in between filming. Currently the actor is starring as President Thomas Kirkman in the ABC TV series Designated Survivor.

Agents fined for illegal rentals THE Ministry of Tourism has fined 14 real estate agencies after inspections found tourist rentals available without the proper paperwork or licenses. Out of 25 agencies inspected in 2017, 14 were fined a total of €257,000. The government has also now sent requests for paperwork to hundreds of tourist rental owners, and warned them of the fines due if they are unlicensed. They face fines of up to €40,000, while estate agents and other middlemen can be fined up to €400,000. Tourist rentals must be registered with the authorities, and there are many guidelines such as apartments less than five years old cannot be rented. In addition, communities of owners will be allowed to vote to allow or ban rentals. The Ministry of Tourism has also fined four car rental companies who were not registered totalling €60,000.

I
T’S May, it’s May, the ‘lovely’ month of May! Except the weather hasn’t been overly lovely here, has it?! It’s Mallorca for goodness sake, what on earth is going on? It’s unheard of when the UK is hotter than Mallorca in May at least it’s the first time in my 15 years here! Hey ho, at least we know this won’t carry on for long, but I am certainly looking forward to a little heat, that’s for sure! April came and went – I took a little break away, both holiday and an overload of work. Real Estate sales have kept me busy, as well as the JoyRon Foundation children’s charity – for which I am pleased to report that during the four Michelin star chefs gala dinner we held at Finca Son Mir we raised just under €50,000, much higher than expected! So thank you to all of the 270 guests who came along to support us, as well as all of our lovely sponsors (who I can’t name in this article for obvious reasons, but please see www.joyronfoundation.org for more details). Back to the topic of property - there It seems to be has been harder than I more confufrom the imagined to find sion government an open-minded over holiday rentals with clien to go on TV a report out from the Fevitur National Federation stating that over the second half of 2017 there was a 34.4% fall in the number of rental properties in Palma being offered on websites, and that the number of properties for holiday rent in Palma represented just 1.42% of all properties. This report concluded that holiday rentals are ‘not a determining factor’ in the bullish prices of the real estate market. Whatever the reality, the heavy crackdown on holiday rentals and licences has certainly reduced the holiday rental availability, although I am not sure yet if it’s meant more properties coming onto the market. That remains to be seen. I would also like to mention that I have been approached by a TV company to assist with a new series called Mediterranean Life. It seems to be harder than I imagined to find an open-minded client (with a sense of humour) to volunteer to star in this as a buyer/buyers - so I would ask that if any Olive Press readers know any ‘outgoing’ personalities looking to buy a nice property in a picturesque location, to please get in touch asap! It will require a few days of your time, but hopefully much less hassle than normal trying to find the right property in the right location, with a wonderfully professional agent (myself, obviously!) acting as a Buyer’s Agent to guide you – and hopefully a little bit of fun to be had along the way! So do please get in touch – they hope to start filming in the next few months.

Given that there are 3,113 shares on the market, it means the company will pay out €2.3 billion to its investors. Originally from Galicia, Ortega opened his first small Zara store in A Coruña in 1975. He is now worth €57.8 billion and has more than 2,266 stores around the world. Inditex recorded a net profit of €3,37 billion euros in its fiscal year 2017 (from February 1, 2017 to January 31, 2018), a 6.6% increase over the previous year (€3,16 billion). A PENSIONER is taking legal advice after being fined for using a ‘bogus’ international driving licence bought from a wellknown expat businessman. American Andrea Barnett, 60, is demanding a refund from David ‘the Dogman’ Klein, after he sold her the ‘suspiciouslooking’ document for €300. The Marbella-based motherof-two, from Illinois, is furious after police told her the licence wasn’t legal, and fined her €500. “They were completely certain that it was not real,” she told the Olive Press. “They told me it was dodgy, fake and I needed

‘DOGMAN’: Klein to pay the fine or I would go to jail. “They weren’t interested who had sold it to me. They just wanted my money.”
But expat Barnett, who by her own admittance was a little naive, has decided that enough is enough and has now called in two lawyers to investigate the case. “I want the police to change their attitude and to investigate those that sell these licences. I don’t want it to happen to anyone else,” she said. “If I had been told clearly that I could not just use this licence on its own I would never have paid so much.” As well as probe the legality of the licences, she hopes to get a full refund from Klein, who

SPAIN’s foreign minister Alfonso Dastis has said that expats will be allowed to stay in Spain if no deal is reached between Britain and the EU. He said he would ensure that the lives of ordinary Britons in Spain are ‘not disrupted’ in the event of a ‘no deal’ Brexit.
Dastis told BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show: “I do hope that there will be a deal. If there is no deal we will make sure that the lives of ordinary people who are in Spain, the UK people, is not disrupted. “Over 17 million Brits come to Spain every year and many of them live here or retire here and we want to keep it that way as much as possible.” According to the Office of National Statistics Spain hosts the largest number of British citizens living inside the EU. Meanwhile, Sadiq Khan has suggested holding a second Brexit referendum if Parliament rejects Theresa May’s deal with the EU. Khan said: “If Parliament decides to accept the deal that our Government makes then we are leaving the European Union. “If Parliament rejects the deal made by our Government then that opens up a whole host of questions.” Brexit negotiations have so far stymied progress to trade talks, despite Angela Merkel setting out a potential December start date.

to a minimum prison term of 19 months for forging a public document and plus an additional criminal fine of 12 euros/day for a period of 18 months if the offender is unable to show evidence that he did have a valid driver’s licence from another country (it now appears that only U.S. officially-approved ‘AAA’ and ‘AATA’ associations can issue such international licences). There are many online ‘businesses’ selling fake driving licences, along with passports and IDs. One advertises its business offer as having ‘years of experience producing original quality real/false passports, ID’s, drivers’ licences.’ Alongside these obvious clandestine operators, there is second tier of businesses that - purporting to have a specific Government official approval - state they can issue valid international driving licences pursuant to Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention and Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention. To sum up, a) international drivers’ licences are generally only issued by officially recognised agencies to drivers who already have a valid licence from the country and b) the agencies issuing them must be approved by the specific Government.

(FAO) in Rome, has confirmed the importance of this method to the local economy. Awarding it as a so-called SIPAM, or system for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean, local growers are now set to capitalise by setting up a foundation to promote it. The news comes as a UN study showed that food products linked to their place of origin are economically and socially beneficial to rural areas and promote sustainable development. Food products registered with a Geographical Indication (GI) label boast an annual trade value of over €50 billion worldwide. The study looked at nine specific foods, including Manchego cheese, in Castilla la Mancha, Taliouine saffron in Morocco and Tête de Moine cheese in Switzerland. In all nine cases, the price of the final product, went up by between 20% and 50% when they had GI status. One reason is that consumers identify unique characteristics - such as taste, colour, texture and quality - in GI products, and are willing to pay higher prices. "Geographical indications can be a pathway to sustainable development for rural communities," said Emmanuel Hidier, Senior Economist at the FAO.

Six million bottles of Spanish wine looks to have sealed the football deal of the year! A CHINESE Super League football team has offered to buy six million bottles of wine to seal a deal with Spanish player Andres Iniesta. Chongqing Dangdai Lifan have reportedly offered the Barcelona midfielder an €80 million deal to switch countries for the next three years. And to sweeten the deal, the club also vowed to order six million bottles of wine from Iniesta’s vineyard, in Fuentealbilla, Castilla la Mancha, worth six euros each amounting to an extra €36 million. It means the total deal would be worth €116 million. Iniesta, who has already confirmed he will retire later this month, said: "This is my last season here. I know what it means to demand what it means to play here year after year. "There are still things to be sorted. I have said I will never play against Barca, so I won't play in Europe. Barca has given me everything." Iniesta’s family have owned the vineyard, Bodega Iniesta, since the 1990s.
A growing concern
A
N initial 10 hectares of vines were planted at the Bodega Iniesta, in Fuentealbilla, in the early 1990s. That was before the son of viticulturist Jose Antonio Iniesta, went on to become one of the world’s best paid footballers. As the money flooded in from his career with Barcelona, Andres wisely invested it in the family business, based between Cuenca and Albacete.
And the vineyard in the DO of Manchuela area has paid back in spades having seen substantial growth over the last three decades. The vineyard now counts 200 hectares and produces a string of wines, including Corazon Loca and its better quality Finca El Carril. The later is a crianca made from the local Bobal grape and has been receiving some excellent reviews over recent years.

ts taken its time, but I think I can safely say that summer is just around the corner. It’s so close I can almost taste it! With that sentiment in mind then, this fortnight’s column is dedicated to wine-based cocktails - guareented to give you that summer feeling, even if the weather doesn’t.
White Sangria Sangria is synonymous with Spain. The wine and juice fusion are especially loved by holidaymakers, is a classic go-to. But it doesn’t need to just be all about red wine. White is the new red. Dry and crisp wines are best to use for this, such as Albarino (Rías Baixas) or Sauvignon Blanc. Once chosen, it’s time to get creative. Berries, apples, stone fruit, spirits and liqueurs are all welcome, but if you need a little more guidance to start look no further: Ingredients 1 lime, thinly sliced into rounds 1 lemon, thinly sliced into rounds 1/4 cup (50 g) sugar 60 ml apple brandy 1/2 green apple, cored, skin on, chopped into small pieces 1 ripe peach or nectarine, thinly sliced 1 cup (166 g) sliced strawberries 1 750 ml bottle dry, crisp white wine, chilled

Agua de Valencia
According to legend this cocktail was invented in 1959 when a group of Basque travellers asked Constante Gil, bartender at Café Madrid de Valencia, for something more exciting than their usual ‘Agua de Bilbao’ - the bar’s best cava. Gil rose to the challenge and concocted what then became known as ‘Agua de Valencia’. So popular was this new drink, that the group continued to order it every time they re-visited. Ingredients 200 ml orange juice 50 ml gin 50 ml vodka 1 750 ml bottle semi-seco Cava Sugar Instructions Place orange juice, cava, vodka and gin into a pitcher Add sugar to taste Chill before drinking

When drinking and dining in Palma one can be rather spoilt for choice - from the hip hovels of Santa Catalina to more traditional eateries of its Old Town. For Deborah, it is not just the fact that Cargo Bar is Mallorca’s first container bar which sets it aside from other spots as THE must visit destination this summer. While Cargo Bar has opened primarily as a place to grab a tipple, it also offers high-quality food throughout the day.
Breakfast is served from 9-12, followed by a wide variety lunch menu between 12-4pm with snacks and tapas available until 7pm to keep you going until dinner. The evening menu is then offered from 7-10.30pm, although this is likely to be extended during peak season. “Everything is cooked from fresh and with the very finest ingredients,” Deborah assures me. Given the fine selection on offer during Cargo Bar’s opening night from melt in the mouth mini pulled pork burgers to exquisite camembert bites - there is enough to satisfy even the fussiest of diners. Cargo Bar offers a winning formula; ensuring all tastes and cultures can be catered to and it is no surprise that McKay believes her bar will endear itself to everyone that drops anchor there this summer.

The next thing that I realised is how much colour plays a part in such arrangements. Not just the clothing but everything. My partner’s family call me ‘The Blonde Bird’ for obvious reasons but I actually grew up with red hair. Being a redhead in the sixties and seventies was not easy. In those non politically correct days having red hair was a bit of a nightmare. Walking past building

I can’t tell you how many times I was greeted back from holiday with the joyful cry of ‘You’re not very brown are you?’ and then the totally unoriginal ‘If all your freckles joined up you’d have a lovely tan’. Those days are long gone now, great fake tans have saved me and although long since a murky grey my hair takes artificial colour in a ‘nice and easy’ way. So, the skin

and hair is coloured, I’ve got a nail varnish for every outfit and the excess weight is being dealt with by some magical underwear. The next problem is it’s in rural France. Don’t ask why, there is no connection to France at all, but it’s their day so let’s just go with it. Annoyingly the airline we’ve booked is on strike the day we fly so thank God we booked to arrive a day early! My daughter has also asked that I do a speech. Really? Hmmm, there’s absolutely no chance of relaxing and enjoying this is there? It’s over three days in a manor house and the whole party is staying there. I’ll be thrown together with a bunch of Liverpudlian in laws I haven’t seen for over six years. What could possibly go wrong? Sorry, but isn’t this starting to sound like an Agatha Christie Poirot mystery? I just keep telling myself it’s not about me. I shall grit my teeth at all times as whilst I’m doing that I can’t say something I regret or that can be used later to incriminate myself. On a positive note however if tere was an Olympic team for planning and organisation my daughter would be the captain, I have every faith that everything will run like clockwork, and if it doesn’t well please don’t let it be my fault. I’ll keep you posted.

MARC Marquez has triumphed after a hard-fought Spanish MotoGP competition in Jerez. His victory - and the accompanying 25 points - has taken him to the top of the overall standings after four rounds of racing. The Honda racer lies 12 points clear of French racer Johann Zarco in 2nd and compatriot Maverick Vinales in 3rd. Marquez rode well but benefitted from some good fortune after a four-way crash knocked out several of his main rivals, including Italian rider Andrea Dovizioso, who had been leading the standings coming into the Spanish leg of the tour. “Dani Pedrosa was the fastest racer but it is not always only about being the fastest,” Marquez said. “You have to overtake, be aggressive in certain moments. “I hope those that crashed are going to be okay, but I won’t lie, it means more points for me.”

Change your life today!
O
UR bodies are covered in microscopic creatures, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. Not surprisingly the vast majority of this microscopic life resides in our gut. Scientists have discovered that more than 50% of the human body’s total cell count is made up by microbes. Understanding this human microbiome is leading to new innovative treatments for many conditions including neurological diseases and allergies More interestingly, our ‘human’ cells only account for between 0.01 and 1% of the total number of genes in our bodies. Some scientists now say that by combining with our own DNA, the genes of our ‘microbiome’ augment the activity of our own cells thereby playing a pivotal role in health, wellbeing and disease. Scientists now believe that this resident microbial material effects how our bodies work and are studying the role the microbiome plays in digestion, regulating the immune system, protecting against disease and manufacturing vital vitamins. This revolutionary way of thinking about microbes promises to change medicine. Historically we have fought microbes with antibiotics, vaccines and gene focused therapy, but perhaps all that is about to change. Whilst many of these innovations have been good and saved lives, they may also have done untold damage to our ‘good bacteria’. Over the last 50 years there has been a huge increase in the incidence of autoimmune disease, allergy, and cancer which we now think may be linked to our microbiomes and which some now associate with specific diseases including inflammatory bowel disease, Parkinson's, depression and autism. Furthermore, there is clear evidence that gut bacteria may play a role in some cases of obesity. Whilst family history clearly plays a role, more importantly portion size, and a diet of burgers, sugary drinks, processed food and chocolate will significantly affect both your risk of obesity and the type of microbes that grow in your diges-
tive tract. Research suggests that a bad mix of bacteria metabolizes food in a way that contributes to obesity. Experiments have shown that feeding lean sterile mice (without any bacteria) faecal bacteria from obese humans results in obese mice and that reversing the bacteria, makes the mice thin again! In the future, microbes could become a new form of medicine and it has been suggested that we should be taking bugs instead of drugs which has led to a growth in probiotic consumption. Research now suggests that repairing someone's microbiome can actually lead to remission of diseases such as ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease. This might also be true in some cases of obesity In the future we may need to monitor our microbiome on a daily basis in order to record information about our health. The evidence clearly suggests that these tiny microbes transform our health in ways we are only just beginning to understand. WWW.CWPESPANA.ES

IT had been a hard day at the zoo for this baby gorilla. The cute primate was snapped mid-yawn at Bioparc in Valencia by photographer Dusica Paripovic. The 32-year-old was visiting one of the zoo’s most popular enclosures when she saw the sleepy monkey nodding off against a wall. “The baby gorillas are so adorable and expressive. They play with twigs or whatever they can find, they stumble and fall, they playfully wrestle with other gorillas,” she said. “They are one of the most active animals in the zoo, and probably the most expressive. And who can resist photographing a cute baby animal?”
