Lisa Brown suspect found adrift on boat in the Atlantic EXCLUSIVE By Laurence Dollimore

Beasley told his rescuers that he was on the run from gangsters. When they asked him if he required assistance, he said: "No radio, no engine, no electricity." It comes just weeks after the Olive Press exclusively revealed Beasley was ‘hiding from criminal gangs’ in a port in Portugal. Beasley, who was friends with Brown and her now-suspect boyfriend Simon Corner, told the Olive Press how he had absconded from bail after being arrested for withholding information in the case.

Welcome to the Rock

FIRST Minister Fabian Picardo has given a warm welcome to the Olive Press’ launch in Gibraltar. The father-of-two saluted the paper’s original reporting and insisted his government would give its full support to aid our growth in the enclave. “I am delighted to cooperate and to ensure you receive all the help you need to inform those who choose the Olive Press for their news. “Welcome to the media stable in Gibraltar.”

The Rock’s leader was talking alongside his lawyer wife Justine ahead of his key speech at National Day, one of the ‘most significant ever’. He told the Olive Press: “It is particularly auspicious this year with the day commemorating the 75th anniversary of great evacuation of the Rock, as well as coming in the week the Queen becomes the UK’s longest serving monarch.” A highlight of his week was watching Kings of Leon at the Gibraltar Music Festival. “Not at the front as I would have got crushed,” he joked. “But I was blown away when I saw everyone’s hands in the air for Sex on Fire, the best rock song of the last decade.” As for a date for his first reelection contest, rumoured to be on November 20, he said: “The only person who knows is my wife.”

A SUSPECT in the Lisa Brown case has been found adrift in the Atlantic. 71-year-old Ron Beasley, from Wales, was found drifting 200 miles off the coast of Portugal. The sailor, who has a wooden leg, was said to be so disoriented he was unable to recall his name when an Italian catamaran crew came across his shipwrecked yacht, the Doolou. His ship was drifting without electricity or engine power in a busy shipping path and was at risk of being mowed down by a freighter.

RECYCLING bins have been installed on ALL beaches in Gibraltar. Some 26 recycling units have been placed on all six beaches, with each containing four bins - a yellow one for plastics, cans and tetra brik containers, green for glass, blue for paper and cardboard and black for other general waste. The initiative forms part of a plan to increase recycling rates and reduce littering. The bins are being serviced daily and additional, larger recycling and general waste bins are also available on all beaches if the smaller units are full.

FORMER deputy chief minister Keith Azopardi has said he will consider running for leader of the GSD after rejoining the opposition last week. “I have rejoined to play my part in any renewal of the party to the extent that the current leadership, MPs, the Executive and members desire,” he said. Meanwhile, others anticipate party founder Peter Montegriffo's return. “If Peter Montegriffo stands I will support him,” said Azopar-

di. “If he does not then I will consider throwing my hat in the ring.” Another rumoured contender Damon Bossino, has not confirmed whether he intends to stand for leadership. It comes after former leader Daniel Feetham announced his resignation from the post earlier this month due to 'personal family reasons.' Roy Clinton has taken over in the interim until a permanent leader is chosen.

Knife try A KNIFE-WIELDING man has been detained after attempting to stab several police officers at the Spain-Morocco border. The suspect is believed to have shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ – God is great – during the attack on July 25, which caused minor injuries to an officer’s hand. A police officer launched a road block at the head of the man in an effort to subdue him. They have described the perpetrator as a ‘disturbed person’ who tried to use the knife on himself before attacking police. It is not being treated as a terror incident.

at the property to repair the damage. “It’s embarrassing and frustrating that it took so long,” Suetta told the Olive Press, “and that my kids have had to live in a mould and damp-filled flat all this time.” She is now demanding to know why she, her son and daughter Tiana, 5, were not rehoused during the works. “Even the workers couldn’t believe we were living here while the works were being carried out,” she claimed, “There were strong fumes and broken glass in my bathroom which cut my son’s leg.” According to the single mother, inspectors came to measure the levels of damp and humidity after the work had been completed last week. She claims in some places the readings were higher than they were before the work started. “My kids lie awake at night coughing and having trouble breathing. Sometimes I just feel like taking some blankets and

sleeping on a park bench with them, because anything would be better than where they are living now.” She also claimed workmen left a light fixture ripped out of the ceiling, and an exposed plug hole with cables hanging out, and that two monkeys have since come into her home due to a broken window. She has now received three letters from doctors confirming that the damp in the house was causing harm to her children’s health. They have been on and off antibiotics for several infections including tonsillitis and bronchitis, causing them to miss school for extended periods of time, and now her son will have to return on August 23 to see if he has to have an operation on his glands. “It’s not fair that my children are missing out of their education because of this.” The Olive Press failed to get a response from the government before going to print.

COUPLE: Boris and Lilly

New balls, please BORIS Becker’s model wife has jetted to Ibiza without the former Wimbledon tennis champ. Lilly, 41, was seen topless and soaking up the sun at a beach on the party island, with a girlfriend amid rumours of marital woes over money. Becker, 49, was declared bankrupt by a British court last month, over an outstanding loan to a group of bankers. The German former player asked for a final chance to repay the debt by remortgaging his Mallorca villa. But Lilly didn’t look like she had a care in the world as she frolicked in the sea without Becker.

ENRIQUE Iglesias still hasn’t introduced his girlfriend to his father despite being with her for 16 years. A dab of this.. TOP Gear legend Jeremy Clarkson is back in Mallorca and posting about it on Twitter, of course. Clarkson landed in Mallorca for another holiday in the sun having been to the island many times for work and play. The car buff first tweeted ‘Mallorca is #Lit lol x,’ with apt emojis. Clarkson is known for his banter on Twitter and often replies to strangers and fans. Clarkson then posted a photo of himself 'dabbing', the trendy new dance move pose, with the caption ‘Dab on it wagwan x."’ Many have commented on Clarkson's strange dabbing tweet, including his daughter Emily who replied, “WHAT IS HAPPENING?”. Since then some of his family have joined him in Mallorca, and he’s again tweeted to fans: “It’s BARE hectic in #Mallorca with da fam.”

Highly EUlogical STAR Trek star Patrick Stewart has slammed Brexit in a new video. The British actor spoke out against the ‘disinformation’ of the Leave campaign to take the UK out of the EU. Stewart was speaking ahead of a pro-EU rally in London on September 9, which is being organised by campaigners People’s March for Europe. “David Cameron didn’t believe we should leave the union. The Leave campaign was filled with disinformation and one huge falsehood – the £350 million that was going to find its way into the NHS,” he said.

RICKY Martin has been confirmed as a headliner for Gibraltar MTV Calling’s first day. The Vente Pa’ Ca singer will join other stars including Years & Years, Jonas Blue and Steve Aoki on the main stage on Saturday, September 2. On Sunday, Craig David, Bastille, the Kaiser Chiefs and Tinie Tempah will take to the same stage, along with other familiar faces. In addition, seven local bands will represent the Rock, including rock band Jetstream and Layla Rose Band. Since releasing his global smash ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ in 1999, Ricky remains as one of the hottest Latino artists in the world today. “That £350 million never existed. The people of the UK were misled. Monthly reports are published on the economic impact of leaving the union – and they are all negative.”’ Meanwhile, campaign group Bremain in Spain have blasted the UK government’s Brexit negotiating team’s performance during last week’s Brussels talks. Chair Sue Wilson criticised David Davis’s team’s ‘lack of preparation’ which contrasted with ‘the professionalism of Michel Barnier’s team’. The EU’s comments about freedom of movement had also ‘sent shockwaves’ through the 1.2-millionstrong British community in the EU, Wilson said. “Citizens’ rights barely received a mention,” she said. “We have repeatedly been told we are the number one priority in these negotiations but it hardly looks that way “How much longer must people live with uncertainty and worry?” She added: “The offer on citizens’ rights, presented weeks ago, reassured us that the EU intended to protect all our rights and freedoms, as if Brexit had never happened.

OPPOSITION leader Roy Clinton has announced a ministerial reshuffle. In addition to his existing responsibilities, Roy Clinton will now take on the economy, public sector efficiency, telecommunications, Brexit, civil aviation, e government and the port while giving up heritage and financial services. Former leader Daniel Feetham is taking on financial services and heritage while retaining health and gaming and giving up his previous responsibilities. Trevor Hammond takes on tourism in addition to his existing portfolio, while Elliott Phillips takes on families and children and employment. Finally, Edwin Reyes will be tasked with education, training and social services. “This reallocation of responsibilities ensures that we can best hold the government to account according to our individual strengths and interests. This is especially the case in respect of education where Gibraltar is about to see the biggest upheaval in our education system for the past 40 years. “Edwin Reyes, a retired teacher of over 20 years experience, is the best placed among us to consider the concerns of parents and educators alike in the implementation of the Governments plans as regards Education which will affect generations to come.”

New ‘progressive political movement’ will provide Gibraltar with another option, says Marlene Hassan Nahon MARLENE Hassan Nahon has said a ‘new political movement’ will be announced in the next three months. The independent MP told the press she wants to offer the people of Gibraltar another option in these ‘times of uncertainty’. It comes in the wake of GSD opposition leader Daniel Feetham’s stepping down, and the resignation of Lawrence Llamas.

Antagonism

Never forgotten A PLAQUE commemorating soldiers killed during the Spanish Civil War has been unveiled in La Linea. Nearly 100 residents of the town were killed by Franco’s troops during the war. Soldiers in the town defied their officers and decided to defend the Spanish republic, by taking control of the Ballesteros barracks. When Franco’s troops arrived in the town the next day, crowds were gathered outside the barracks in support of the soldiers. Franco’s troops opened fire, mercilessly killing dozens of civilians. The plaque is now located on the façade of the barracks.

Cheap and cheerful ALGECIRAS is still the second cheapest destination for tourists in the whole of Andalucia. Despite the arrival of high season, and the Algeciras fair, the average price of a room in one of its hotels is £40 per night. The only cheaper option is Motril in Granada, where the price for one night is on average £33 per room, according to the Institute of Statistics and Cartography of Andalusia (IECA).

Bad practice AN employee at La Linea Hospital has been arrested for stealing from patients. It comes after a woman reported the theft of her purse while she was attending her ill father in his hospital room. Days later, police received reports of the theft of three mobile phones, a wallet and some money from patients and workers. The suspect, a caretaker who has not been named, was apprehended and police searched him, finding mobile phones that had been stolen that morning on his person. He was then arrested. It comes during a recent crime surge in the Andalucian town. La Linea is a gateway for drugs smuggled from the African continent, and for tobacco smuggled from Gibraltar.

La Linea hospital becomes the site of heartless thefts from patients

Show time A HOST of stars are set to descend on Sotogrande this August for four spectacular concerts. British singer John Newman, who reached number one in the UK charts with Love Me Again, will perform on August 3. Also performing will be Spanish rock band Men G on August 5, and Spanish violinist Ara Malikian on August 12. The last concert will be the Earth, Wind and Fire Experience, a 70s-themed extravaganza. The concerts form part of the Sunset Valley Festival at the Santa Maria Polo Club, which has a capacity for up to 4,000 people.

Risky game

This leads to higher crime levels. In June, a La Linea Police officer was killed during a tobacco smug-

gling bust, and several officers have been the victims of violent attacks since.

LA LINEA is at ‘high risk’ of bankruptcy. A report has revealed it is one of five areas in Spain with this status, citing the regional capitals of Cadiz, Granada, Jaen and Cuenca as the other four. Andalucia has the highest proportion of at-risk cities, according to the report by spain’s fiscal responsibility authority.

AN artificial reef helping to regenerate vital fish stocks in the Bay of Gibraltar could be forcibly removed by Spain. The line of concrete blocks which aims to stop Spanish fishermen from trawling the area, has been raised in Parliament in Madrid. In his first act as a newly-elected MP, Algeciras mayor Jose Ignacio Landaluce demanded the removal of Gibraltar’s artificial reef, which he insists is located in Spanish waters. The 56-year-old insisted it was harming the local fishing industry, despite the area now ‘exploding with life’ in particular with a huge growth of tuna, bream, octopus and triggerfish. In his first demand since becoming an MP for Cadiz with 172,475 votes, Landaluce insisted he would fight to protect the local fishing fleet. “The colony (Gibraltar) should remove the blocks it threw into waters belonging to Spain,” he reiterated. The 70 concrete blocks dropped in British Gibraltar Territorial Waters in 2013 caused furious protests from Spanish fishermen who claimed the artificial reef was damaging fishing. It led to right-wing group

Algeciras mayor demands removal of Rock’s environmentally-popular concrete reef as Spanish fisherman is charged with theft of a block

NIGHT-MAYOR: Landaluce uses MP platform to reignite reef row and (right) Guardia Civil divers inspect concrete blocks after they were installed in 2013 ‘Fundación para la Defensa de la Nación Española’ stealing a concrete block from the reef in June 2014. And now, the former head of a La Linea fishing guild has been charged over his involvement in the theft. Boat owner Leoncio Fernandez, 70, appeared at New Mole House last week following his arrest in October, despite initially claiming he would not bother turning up.

“I do not know anything about that block,” he insisted, before contradicting himself and saying: “It is true that I was there, but my boat was not used.” Fernandez’s bail was set at €3,300 and he will attend a hearing in April. Gibraltar’s environment department meanwhile insisted its decision to block the area had been vindicated and that the reef was ‘exploding with

life’ in particular with octopuses and triggerfish. The move was part of the UK’s attempt to help bolster fish stocks globally. Landaluce has long been unpopular in Gibraltar because of his repeated comments in the media concerning disputed waters in the Bay of Gibraltar, which he calls the ‘Bay of Algeciras’.

Corner set to fly in THE boyfriend of missing expat Lisa Brown (both above) will return to Spain to be questioned by police. Liverpudlian Simon Corner will fly into Malaga this week to ‘clear his name’, according to his legal representative. Corner - aka Dean Woods - sparked suspicion after fleeing Spain days after Lisa’s disappearance in November. Police have appealed for Corner, 33, to return to Spain to face ‘unanswered questions’ ever since. Olive Press sources have claimed he is either in Thailand or Portugal and that he is being sought by a number of local criminal gangs.

Jailed

The Liverpudlian - who was jailed for three months in Gibraltar for possession of a weapon last year - is now set to meet Guardia Civil officers in Algeciras this week. His legal contact Jason Coghlan, of JaCogLaw, is coordinating the meeting. “There has been a relentless campaign against our client ever since Lisa Brown broke contact with her friends and family and was declared a missing person,” said Coghlan, who studied the law while serving a 12-year sentence for armed robbery in Alhaurin prison. “Simon assures me he is totally innocent of any wrongdoing and to date there is no evidence that anything untoward has taken place.” A Find Lisa Facebook group, run by her sister Helen Jordan, has raised over £6,000.

GIBRALTAR is celebrating a thumping victory after Spain was forced to overturn a ban on the Rock’s hockey clubs. It comes after the Olive Press confronted the Spanish government over why Spanish teams had apparently been told to play no friendly games with any Gibraltar teams. The retreat by the Spanish government’s Consejo Superior De Deportes (CSD) came after further pressure from the Gibraltarian authorities. The Gibraltar Hockey Association (GHA) was informed of the u-turn late on Friday night by the Royal Federation of Spanish Hockey (RFEH). “It’s fantastic news,” GHA president Carl Rammage told the Olive Press. “Everyone is very happy and looking forward to playing again. I have spoken to representatives from Spanish clubs over the weekend and we are all looking forward to getting on with it. “I am surprised at how quickly this has been resolved.” The European Hockey Federation (EHF) was also happy that the issue was dealt with so swiftly. Its director general Angus

Declined every year, letters from the housing department (seen by the Olive Press) state that the work would ‘change the aesthetics of the building’. In addition it adds that the ‘encroachment of common areas’ could lead to problems with drainage. The Ignacios however continue to fight the decision on the grounds that neighbours have similar gates to what they are asking for. Their most recent applica-

A spokesman for the government promised last night that it would look into the case.

PARTY MODE: Gibraltarians celebrate National Day with inflatable barbary macaque “National Day will never ever be diminished. In fact, it will only get bigger. We stand together, red white and free!” he bellowed. Following the speeches, the traditional releasing of the balloons – which has caused controversy in re-

cent years due to its environmental impact – took place. Then, as the crowds gazed up at the red and white speckled sky, Tina Turner’s Simply the Best blasted through the sound system, signalling the start of an almighty party.

Safe haven Rock welcomes refugee family while one Gibraltarian raises £157,000 for Calais ‘jungle’ camp

GIBRALTAR is launching its own humanitarian effort to help the current migrant crisis. The government has confirmed to the Olive Press that at least one refugee family is to be welcomed to the Rock. Discussions are currently underway with authorities in London over who to choose, and what Gibraltar would need to provide. “We want to make sure we get the right family who will settle comfortably into our community,” confirmed government spokesman. “It means they will probably have to be English-speakers,” he added. Meanwhile, another Gibraltarian has broken records raising money for impoverished migrants camped in Calais. Dan Teuma, 29, has amassed a staggering £157,000 to help struggling families hoping to enter the UK.

ROCK RELIEF: Gibraltarian Dan Teuma helping refugees in Calais camp His big-hearted campaign began after an eye-opening visit to the migrant camp with girlfriend Jaz O’Hara, 25, in August. Originally planning to make a documentary on the camp known as ‘the jungle’ - he was so moved by the plight of the group of mostly Africans and Syrians that he decided to launch an appeal instead. Money that had been raised for the film through website JustGiving was then channelled into a new organisa-

tion CalAid. “We couldn’t believe the level of support we were getting,” Dan, a proud llanito, told the Olive Press. “I remember JustGiving calling us to say we had raised so much money, a record in fact, that we needed to take serious action.” CalAid is helping provide refugees with tents, clothes, food and water. “I think it’s important for Gibraltar to see that it can make

a difference away from the Rock,” added Dan, who still visits three times a year. “I want Gibraltar to become globally-recognised as a helping-hand when these kind of crises occur. “One day, when I’m done travelling, I plan to move back home and help set up a welfare organisation,” he added. PRO-independence parties in Catalunya are now baying for a referendum having won a majority of seats in the regional elections. Catalan president Artur Mas’s Junts pel Si coalition secured 62 of the 135 seats, with the anti-capitalist CUP winning ten seats. However, the result is not as definitive as Mas proclaimed in his ‘Catalans have voted for independence’ victory speech. Firstly, the two parties’ 47.2% share of the vote is short of an overall majority. But more importantly, the CUP party insists it does not want Mas to lead a pro-independence government, citing a police investigation into alleged kickbacks taken by Mas’ party. Elsewhere, the anti-independence Ciutadans came second with 25 seats as Mariano Rajoy’s PP picked up just 11, nine less than in 2012. Sunday’s record election turnout was over 77% with four million Catalans voting.

GET LOST GOVE! SPECIAL REPORT By Joe Duggan

GIBRALTAR has rounded on Michael Gove after he claimed Spain wouldn’t ‘show disdain’ towards the Rock after a Brexit. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo and GSD leader Daniel Feetham joined forces to lash out at the Tory Justice Secretary, who made the shocking remark during a live TV debate. Weighing into the row, Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary, Hilary Benn, also slammed the ‘deeply worrying’ comments. Talking to the Olive Press exclusively, Benn said last night: "The way Michael Gove and the Leave campaign casually dismiss the risks to Gibraltar's security and economy is deeply worrying. “Furthermore, leaving the European

Give us our money back! Residents demand Tax Office settles longstanding rebates

THOUSANDS of pounds in tax rebates are being held back from Gibraltar workers, it has been claimed. A backlog of tax refunds has built up with some people still owed payouts from as long ago as 2008. While the Tax Office insists all money owed will be paid,

residents are fed up of waiting for money that is rightfully theirs. The long delay of up to eight years has led a number of Gibraltar employees to con-

tact the Olive Press for our help. One insisted she had ‘nowhere left to turn’ and was desperate for the money. Nurse Donna Alecio, 32, is waiting on two rebates dating back to tax years 2008/09 and 2009/10, which total ‘well over’ £1,000. The problem began when the mother-of-two was put on emergency tax when she started at St. Bernard’s Hospital, in 2008.

Angry

While she is unsure of the exact amount owed (‘because nobody has confirmed it’) the Tax Office insisted it would be repaid two years ago. She was given the same line this month and is growing increasingly angry. “I’ve been told I’m owed money time-and-again but I’ve no idea how much or when I will receive it,” she told the Olive Press. “Then last week, I was told

A GROUP of Gibraltar’s staunchest political allies have backed the Brexit campaign, despite the Rock’s overriding fears. It comes despite the UK’s Europe minister David Lidington warning that British rights to live in Spain ‘would be up in the air’ if the UK voted to leave the EU on June 23. He added that it could lead to ‘a decade of economic chaos’, an argument backed up by leaders at the G20 summit this weekend in Shanghai. WARNING: Juncker

DESERTERS! BRITONS will be labelled ‘deserters’ should they vote to leave the EU, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has warned. In a damning blow for the Leave campaign, Juncker said the UK would face ‘serious consequences’ and would be treated as a ‘third country’ should the country vote for Brexit. “The deserters will not be welcomed with open arms,” Juncker said. “If the British public vote Leave, which I hope they don’t, then life in the EU will not go on as before.

“The UK will have to accept that it won’t be handled with kid gloves. “If the British leave Europe, people will have to face the consequences. Relations will no longer be what they are today.”

Gibraltar’s ‘unsafe’ air quality - worse than all but two places in Spain revealed in shocking new WHO study

GIBRALTAR’S air pollution levels breach international standards and are higher than any other part of the UK, an alarming new study has shown. A key World Health Organisation (WHO) report into global air quality shows Gibraltar’s large particle (PM10) pollution was higher than London and 99% of Spain. Registered at 31, the particles including sulfate, nitrate and carbon, are well above the accepted ‘safe’ level of 20 mg/ per cubic-metre. They can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause health problems, according to the WHO.

SPECIAL REPORT By Joe Duggan

Only Puerto Real, in Cadiz, and Aviles, in Asturias, fare worse in Spain. Meanwhile, another level (PM 2.5) is also high and above the WHO safety guideline of 10 microgrammes. The in-depth five year study, up to 2013, covering 795 cities in 67 countries, found 80% of people living in urban areas are breathing air that breaches safety standards. Dr Peter Sheridan, a specialist public health physician for the Gibraltar Health Authority, described the levels as ‘disappointing’.

“While the finding is disappointing, the excess of particulate matter is attributable to being a major port close to busy shipping lanes and on occasions climatic conditions that do not disperse the particulate matter,” he told the Olive Press. “Gibraltar has a well-established action plan for addressing air quality and is monitoring air quality to bring it up to international standards.” Much of the pollution is put down to the large Cepsa refinery in San Roque, plus other industrial activity. The Campo de Gibraltar is already accepted as being one of the most polluted parts of Spain, with La Linea often singled out for concern. However, Gary Fuller, an air quality expert from King’s College London, explained that dust from the Sahara desert is also a ‘massive factor’ in Gibraltar’s particle readings. “Gibraltar has different weather conditions to the rest of the UK. Several times a year wind from the Sahara blows dust across the countries of southern Europe,” he said. “Clearly there is nothing the government can do to control that. Shipping will be an issue too but mainly affecting the

FORMER Marbella mayor Angeles Munoz is in hot water after failing to correctly declare four properties in Gibraltar during her tenure at the town hall. The ex-PP boss is facing tough questions after she declared the purchases, alongside another in Sweden and one in Malaga. All six properties were purchased either before or during her time as mayor, yet she either failed to declare them entirely or wrongly stated details about their purchase when asked just two years ago.

In two cases, Munoz - who is standing as the PP’s candidate for Malaga’s senate originally stated the date of purchase as five years later than the actual date. The senate has also discovered that the properties are all linked to Gibraltar businesses with links to Munoz’s husband, property developer Lars Broberg. One business has been named as Cutaga, for which Munoz owned shares for five years and her husband is now 100% owner.

IN 2015 the UK government paid £13 billion to the EU budget, while EU spending on the UK was £4.5 billion. This means that the total cost of being a member of the EU is around £8.5 billion, out of an annual British expenditure of an around £700 billion. The question of economic benefits of EU membership - trade, jobs, investment etc - is far trickier to put a price on. What is clear is that David Cameron has been attempting to renegotiate Britain’s relationship with the EU on issues such as migrants and welfare, but many politicians and commentators claim he has made little progress. An analysis of the six most recent polls suggests 45% of voters want to leave the EU, while 55% will vote to remain.

During a fierce war of words over an alarming World Health Organisation report - revealed exclusively by the Olive Press last issue - shadow environment minister Trevor Hammond slammed the government for a failure to tackle car emissions. Democratic Unionist MP Ian Paisley added: “These are our international waters, this is our country, these are our people and we must support them.” “We will never surrender this rock!” he roared in a rousing address. After waving a letter of ‘best wishes’ from the Queen, the Chief Minister finally vowed to increase National Day celebrations in years to come.

A CULTURAL goldmine of paintings and prints owned by the disgraced Marrache legal firm has been put up for sale by liquidators. A signed print by Salvador Dali (pictured) is among the valuable collection, which includes paintings by some of Gibraltar’s most famous artists. There is also a range of prints and maps dating back to the 18th century, as well as a lithograph of female smugglers and a ceiling-high plan of mid-1900s Gibraltar. Some residents have argued that the collection should be put on display and not sold. The Gibraltar Heritage Trust told the Olive Press it had requested a visit to the collection in order to take an informed view. The three Marrache brothers were jailed in 2014 over years of fraud which led to the collapse of their firm with debts of more than £34 million.

A group of 11 British politicians delivered rip-roaring speeches focussing on recent tensions with Spain and backing Gibraltar’s right to selfdetermination. SELL, LET OR MANAGE

THEY are some of the most iconic photographs in rock and roll history. But controversy surrounds the original negatives from John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 1969 Gibraltar wedding taken by British photographer David Nutter, it can be revealed. Showing the Beatles singer celebrating his nuptials to his Japanese lover out of the glare of the public eye, the pictures have been published in thousands of publications around the world ever since. Yet, the valuable negatives - estimated to be worth over £100,000 - vanished in the 1970s after Nutter, 77, lent them to a friend Anthony Fawcett to use in his book, John Lennon: One Day At A Time. Included in the missing batch, taken on Nutter’s Nikon camera, are around a dozen never-before published photos of the wedding day, some seen for the first time in the Olive Press, this issue. Music photographer Nutter - who had flown out for the wedding from London to Gibraltar on a commission from the Beatles record label Apple - has spent the best part of the last four decades trying to recoup his property. Tet two separate investigations by British police and the FBI in America have so far failed to recover them. Now however, in a sensational twist, the Olive Press can reveal that various anonymous ‘sellers’ have recently tried to sell back Nutter’s own images. The London-born snapper, who now lives in New York, revealed that another photographer Brian Hamill, has also been suspiciously offered two strips of his original negatives taken of John Lennon. New Yorker Hamill had also lent the original negatives to Fawcett - a British art critic, author and media consultant - for the same book.

“Now we are being offered our own photographs back for thousands of pounds,” Nutter told the Olive Press, this week. “It is an outrage and it adds salt to the wounds that go back over 40 years,” he added. He had ‘stupidly’ lent Fawcett the negatives after they became friends, while living in New York in the mid 1970s.

Fawcett had worked with Lennon and Yoko as their assistant for a while and was writing a book about Lennon’s life. “He asked me if I could help with images for the book and I stupidly said ‘yes’ and lent him all the negatives. “When I asked for them back a little while later, he told me his apartment had been repossessed... and everything

had been taken. “Even when I called in the police, I never got them back.” Indeed, a 1983 letter from Southwark Police to Nutter (above), seen by the Olive Press, shows that officers questioned Fawcett at his home in south London. Fawcett told the officers about his flat being repossessed in the Big Apple and that while most of his property was later returned, the photographs and negatives were not included. "However, he (Fawcett) did say he knew someone in possession of the photographs and agreed to telephone Mr

world-renowned Beatles memorabilia expert estimated the set of wedding pictures to be worth over £100,000, last night. Peter Miniaci claims that he, himself, was offered the images in 2007, when he received an email offering him 'some rare John and Yoko wedding photos'. "I was suspicious and asked if the sender had the rights to the images, to which it was claimed that ‘the photographer is dead’ so I didn’t need to worry about it," he told the Olive Press. "Right away the red flag went up. I rang May Pang [Lennon's former PA] and she told me ‘definitively’ David Nutter took those photos and he is alive and well in New York." He later called the anonymous seller, who had a fake British accent, to try and track him down. He said he wanted £20,000 for the contact sheets (which are not as valuable or good quality as the original negatives). "Whoever offered me the contact sheets must know where the negatives are. If David could sell the whole set of photos I'm confident, because the majority are unpublished, he could get £70,000 to over £100,000 for them.”

A BELEAGUERED international firm with an office in Gibraltar has found itself at the heart of the world’s biggest leak of secret information. A total of 11 million documents were released from Mossack Fonseca’s head office in Panama linking 12 world leaders and countless celebrities with alleged tax evasion. New leader for Spain?

IT is not often you see Gibraltar’s Chief Minister on the front page of a Spanish newspaper… for all the right reasons. But Fabian Picardo graced El Mundo this weekend with the quote; “The British monarch will always reign over the Rock.” He was responding to questions in a doublepage article regarding Gibraltar and Spanish foreign minister Margallo’s claim that Spain would push for joint sovereignty in the event of Brexit. “The people voted to stay British in 2002, and given Margallo’s behaviour since then, there would be even less people in favour of co-sovereignty now,” Picardo said.

BARACK Obama has warned a crucial American trade deal with the UK could take a decade to arrange in the event of a Brexit. In a boost to the In campaign, the US president claimed the UK would be ‘at the back of the queue’ for trade deals with Washington. On a three-day visit to Britain, he also defended his right to voice an opinion on the June 23 referendum. “It could be five years from now, 10 years from now before we’re actually able to get something done,” said Obama. “I don’t anticipate that anything I’ve said will change the position of those who are leading the campaigns in one direction or the other. “But for ordinary voters I thought it would be relevant to hear what the president of the United States, who loves the British people and cares deeply about this relationship, has to say.”

HAS Spain found the answer to its political stalemate? With no government in office and politicians pulling in opposite directions, could Chief Minister Fabian Picardo’s Easter visit to the capital have wider implications?

Taking the family to Madrid during Semana Santa, it is unclear whether Picardo threw his hat into the ring to lead the country out of its political mess. Either way he looked happy as he posed with wife Justine and kids Sebastian and Oliver in Madrid’s Retiro Park.

Despite being a smoker himself he finds the permissive nature of the hospital ‘bewildering’. “I have been to several hospitals around Europe as my son has required many operations and Gibraltar is the only place like this,” he told the Olive Press. “Even as a smoker I find it bewildering that you can smoke on hospital grounds in this day and age. “It is just common decency. You do not expect to see staff smoking and then go in to look after patients.” Mr Victor, whose wife is expecting their second child, is adamant a complete ban at St Bernard's would benefit everybody. A spokesperson from the GHA management told the Olive Press: "At present there is a designated smoking area outside the hospital building, in the

courtyard.” However, he admitted: “All such policies are constantly under review." The GHA’s website meanwhile states it ‘encourages a smoke free environment for the benefit of everyone’. Hospitals in Scotland banned smoking on their grounds last year, with Northern Ireland following suit last month. Most hospitals in England have also brought in bans. In Spain, smoking is banned completely from hospitals. Last month, the Gibraltar government banned smoking in cars containing children. On last month’s National No Smoking Day, GHA nurse practitioner Elizabeth Borges, who runs the No Smoking clinic, described smoking as ‘still the biggest cause of premature death in the UK’, adding ‘there is nothing good about smoking’.

NO jobs will be lost in Gibraltar, after huge British retailer BHS went into administration. Both BHS stores will remain ‘open as normal’ despite the UK company set to shed 11,000 jobs. “We are going to be trading as normal and there will be no job losses in Gibraltar,” IFL director George Russo told the Olive Press. BHS has been run by International Franchises Limited (IFL) for 30 years on the Rock “We will be trading as usual and our opening hours will be the same,” Russo said. BHS owner Dominic Chappell told staff in the UK that the retailer would go into administration this week with the closure of 164 stores.

Barclays bashed THE government has slammed Barclays as a ‘failure’ after the bank announced it is pulling out of Gibraltar. In a strongly worded statement, the government insisted the bank had ‘let down’ employees. “Barclays is principally letting them [the workers] and their families down after many of them will have decided or been forced to stay with the bank at the time of its withdrawal from the retail banking sector in Gibraltar,” it said.

Hands off! WE WILL FIGHT THEM ON THE BEACHES: Idyllic Catalan Bay and (inset) disgruntled Jackson

HUNDREDS of Gibraltar residents are battling plans for 24 new apartments in the heart of Catalan Bay. Nearly a thousand people have signed a petition to oppose two proposals put forward to knock down the historic buildings. They are concerned that four storeys of flats with terrace extensions are to be built on the site, known locally as The Village Inn, as well as an adjacent, dilapidated cottage. The Save Catalan Bay Village From the Developers petition on Change.org has so far gained 952 signatures.

Catalan Bay residents fight back against development plans that would ‘ruin character’ of historic village EXCLUSIVE By Joe Duggan Catalan Bay resident Mike Jackson started the petition and insists the new buildings would ruin the area’s charm. “I think they will spoil the village and take away something

of its magic,” expat Jackson, 50, told the Olive Press. “This is a very unique place that should be protected. There is not much left of the village’s history, but the narrative is still there where you can see the connection to the old fishing village. You don’t want to lose that.

“The developers seem detached and on another planet. Why just wipe away these echoes of history and put up these modern apartments?” Lifelong resident Gerald Lopez added: “It’s going to spoil the character of the place. “We live a very quiet life here, and for somebody to come here just to earn money and spoil our lives here, I won’t stand it.” The part-time boatmaker continued: “We are not objecting to the buildings being fixed, but in a more tasteful way.” Town planning notices at the site name Catalan Tropical Limited and AKS Architects and Engineers as the companies applying for planning permission, although AKS insists it is not the developer. A spokesman refused to comment further. Both applications are scheduled to be considered by Gibraltar’s Development and Planning Commission on May 24. “We are not against change, but the petition has shown people have a great affection for the place,” said Mr Jackson, 50. “A development, if done correctly, could enhance the place and make it even more exciting for tourists and locals. “It’s these old buildings that give Catalan Bay a flavour and make it special.”

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has now pledged to work hard to find all 16 employees jobs, alongside local trade union Unite. "We care about the Barclays employees who didn't take or were not allowed to take redundancy packages two years ago,” he said. Barclays insisted it would continue to service its customers in Gibraltar from the UK, describing the move as part of ‘a continuing drive for simplification’. However local Unite representative Dominick Hook said: “If Barclays proceeds with this plan Gibraltar’s residents and businesses will be left high and dry. “The loss of vital experience and specialist knowledge built up by local staff over many years simply cannot be replicated remotely from London.”

BRITAIN’S membership of the European Union has increased the average UK wage by £1,800 a year, economists claim. With the EU referendum on Brexit just six weeks away, financial advisors have warned of an ‘economic collapse’ should Britons vote to leave. In total, Britain has generated £4.6 million in trade deals with the EU since joining in 1986 - representing 27% of all our commerce, according to leading consultancy firm Frontier Economics. The latest findings back reports published by the International Monetary Fund, The OECD and the Bank of England, that insist the UK is better off in Europe. The deadline for expats to register for their vote is May 16.

Walker also revealed that the team have been using Whatsapp to fire themselves up for the Glasgow match. “We’ve got our own Whatsapp group and we’ve been sharing videos of the fans at Celtic Park to motivate ourselves,” he said. “I’ve played in Scotland before and their fans are very passionate. Gorham’s Turkish delight GORHAM’S Cave has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Gibraltar Neanderthal home and its sister caves were awarded the status at a key UNESCO meeting in Istanbul. It is the first time a Gibraltar site has been included in the UNESCO list. Professor Clive Finlayson, the Director of the Gibraltar Museum, says he is ‘delighted’ after leading the six-year bid to gain UNESCO recognition. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he told the Olive Press. “We are delighted to be getting a world class badge for Gibraltar which will open many doors for us. It is a huge honour. “We knew we had a good site, but there is always that nervousness.” He added that while the official bid was launched in 2010, research has been 20 years in the making. “We are now looking forward to developing the site's potential through tourism and education as well as the research which continues to be undertaken.”

BORIS Johnson has promised Gibraltar the UK will ‘never’ surrender the Rock’s sovereignty. The new Foreign Secretary confessed he was a ‘fan of Gibraltar’ and that the Rock would be fully involved in Brexit negotiations. During a meeting with Chief Minister Fabian Picardo in London, the pro-Brexit leader insisted: “I am a fan of Gibraltar. I much admire the place. “The people of Gibraltar have repeatedly and overwhelmingly expressed their wish to remain under British sovereignty and we will respect their wishes.” He added: “We will continue to take whatever action is necessary to safeguard Gibraltar, its people and its economy, including maintaining a wellfunctioning border.” Johnson’s positive stance contrasts with outgoing Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond’s more cautious tones over recent weeks. Hammond was twice noncommittal when pressed on the UK’s ability to back the Rock post-Brexit. Picardo called the meeting with Johnson ‘very positive’ ahead of the Conservative MPs trip to

A GROUP of Conservative MP’s have warned NATO’s Secretary General of Spain’s behaviour towards Gibraltar. In a letter to Jens Stoltenberg, the group label Spain’s recent conduct as a threat to British security, and warn that it could lead to a ‘serious’ incident at sea. It points to 210 ‘unlawful incursions’ of Spanish vessels into Gib waters, labelling Spain as an ‘increasingly unreliable’ NATO ally. “We personally fear that incursions will result in a serious incident at with collisions and serious injury,” the letter - headed by Filton and Bradley Stoke MP Jack Lopresti - reads.

It comes amid ongoing concerns over Spain’s acting Foreign Secretary Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo’s sabre-rattling over co-sovereignty of the Rock.

“The fact that Spain impedes the free movement of NATO forces between Gibraltar and Spain is to the detriment of Western Security, for example not allowing US Naval ships to bunker in Gibraltar and then dock at Spanish ports.” They add that Spain’s decision to not permit the UK’s Royal Air Force to use Spanish airspace on their way to and from Gibraltar adds an estimated cost of £5,000 to £10,000 to each flight. The letter continues: “It seems to us that Spain’s behavior as a NATO ally is becoming increasingly unreliable. “The Spanish Government allows the refueling of Russian warships in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta at a time when Russia has invaded the Ukraine. “Yet the Spanish Foreign Minister makes ongoing verbal threats against Gibraltar.” Tory MPs Andrew Rosindell and Bob Stewart, as well as DUP deputy leader Nigel Dodds, have also signed the letter. Freed fisherman returns to Gibraltar after Ceuta jail ordeal

On hearing of Pincho’s release, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo tweeted his delight at the ‘great news’. During his time in prison, in Ceuta, Harrak said Pincho was treated ‘very well’. The family were allowed to visit once a week, but Harrak revealed that her brother turned down the offer of another visit to spare his family the difficulty of travelling to see him.

EXCLUSIVE By Joe Duggan A FISHERMAN wrongly arrested at sea by the Guardia Civil has spoken of his ‘relief’ after being released from a Ceuta prison. Jared Pincho has finally been discharged, a week after his two friends Stefan Saltariche and Dylan Barber. All three have now had charges of assault against them dropped. Pincho, 34, had been remanded in custody since his arrest on July 5, when the Guardia Civil appeared to speed towards his boat. All three men were arrested although Barber and Saltariche were released after a court hearing in Ceuta. Oddly, Pincho has now been barred from entering Ceuta for three years. Melanie Harrak, Pincho’s sister, told the Olive Press the family were delighted that the ordeal was over. “Jared is really tired. He was really nervous before the court hearing as he doesn’t really trust anyone at the minute,” she said. “But when the handcuffs came off he

“He is a very strong man. When my parents went over to him, he protected them from showing how hard it was for him,” said Harrak. “It’s been very hard for my mum and dad.” She added: “He was an unlucky guy. There were 10 boats out there that day and it just happened to be his that was singled out. “I’d like to thank everybody who has helped, especially the government. My phone was overheating with all the messages of support from people.” The family are now planning to hold a delayed birthday celebration next weekend after Pincho turned 34 during his time in jail. They are also hoping to recover his boat, which is still being held by police in Ceuta. Opinion Page 6

Dyfed-Powys Police are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity between 12.30am and 1.30am to come forward. A Brecon source told the Olive Press: “Everybody here is very shocked. This is not a big place and there is a real warmth towards the army in

Brecon. “Apparently there was a fight, he was attacked and he has come out of it worse. They are local guys who have been arrested. The CCTV in that part of town is very good. “I would say there is less trouble here than most towns. But we have all heard stories about local guys who have fights with soldiers. This one is just so much more severe.” A Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed the death and insisted it was ‘inappropriate’

to comment further. Brecon is home to the Infantry Battle School, where the Royal Gibraltar Regiment and other regiments train. The soldier's family, who relocated to Gibraltar from Northern Ireland, were informed on Sunday, while two men, aged 22 and 23, were arrested on Monday. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo expressed his sadness at the 'tragic news' and said 'our thoughts are with the family’.

Nutter with the details,” the letter reads. But according to Nutter, Fawcett never called him with the name. Now living a hand to mouth existence in New York, he is desperate to get to the bottom of the mystery. "I go crazy thinking about it," he said. “I would write my initials in ink on every frame so I would know straight away know they were mine. “And, in any case, who else could have taken them… nobody else was there in Gibraltar. I know they’re still around. How do I get them back?” He continued: "It's heartbreaking. I’ve sort of given up. I could have done very well with those images and people are always asking me for them and I don't have them. I am living in poverty. “I could have made a lot of money not that that was the important thing. Its just the idea of someone having my stuff. I want them back.” As fellow photographer Hamill, who also suspiciously lost negatives in the 1970s to Fawcett, said last night: “Me and David are two old guys who survived the sixties. Those photos for us could mean something for my daughter and granddaughter.“ The Olive Press tried to contact Fawcett repeatedly by email and phone this week to discuss the missing negatives but received no response.

IT’S an absolute privilege to live here,” enthuses 29-yearold Georgina Taylor, welcoming me to her eponymous chiringuito Gigi’s. “It’s such a beautiful, elegant paradise.” This is Sotogrande, Andalucia’s largest privately-owned residential super-estate. Throughout the last crisis, while areas like Fuengirola saw property prices plummet by as much as 11%, in Sotogrande they remained stable and even increased, some well into the double figures. Santa Maria Polo Club in August is almost as famous for its pop-up shopping village and Grey Goose vodka after-parties as the gladiatorial sport itself. That’s largely thanks to the scores of royals and Spanish celebrities who come for the month to spectate and join in when they fancy it. This year’s is expected to draw around 80,000 visitors, 30,000 more than last year and without a doubt its biggest to date. Re-establishing and maintaining healthy whole body movement after an injury or illness is the key to long-term recovery, say Carole Falconer, a physiotherapist and Andrea Young, a Pilates practitioner and functional movement specialist.

They have both observed a gap in physical injury aftercare and now work in tandem to ensure clients don’t repeat the injuries that brought them to their clinic in the first place. “Just because you’ve been discharged by a doctor or surgeon doesn’t always mean you’re fit to immediately return to previous activities, either work, home or sports related” explains Andrea, who provides fitness training in the same building as Carole’s physiotherapy clinic in the heart of Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro. “For example you might break a bone or damage a joint, a surgeon will repair the injury and that’s their job done. After that you’ll go to physiotherapy to re-establish pain-free movement, and then be discharged to return to your normal life. Frequently however, many people are still unready to resume their previous activities. Some go right back to activities that got them into trouble in the first place. Others, having subconsciously ‘favoured the injury’ during the initial recovery period, have created compensatory habits making them move differently thus creat-

Let’s get physical ing new issues. Following physiotherapy, Andrea works to restore the client’s healthy movement patterns so they can more easily and safely return to a full range of activity. “We both firmly believe in the need to take account of who the person is, what they do for a living, what recreational activity they take part in and what they need and want to be able to do to live life fully. We treat the person, not just the injury.” Carole, who has trained with the re-

nowned James Cyriax, often described as the father of orthopaedic medicine, goes to Andrea’s classes herself. “I often joke that these women could do a degree in anatomy after a few weeks because Andrea explains exactly what they’re doing and why, and people understand things much better that way,” she says. Both notice the way their clients’ bodies change, their confidence grows and movement becomes much more fluid, efficient and importantly pain free. With

ibly far more busy than last year, with the new haunts bringing a buzz to the area. And you can’t help but feel at peace when strolling around the marina, although make that Segwaying around the marina. Personal transporters are the in thing here, whether it’s workers zooming to the office, coffee in hand, or hipster teens taking turns on motorised skateboards. After dodging the two-wheeled-speedsters, you might want to check out the port’s bustling Mercado de Levante flea market. From ceramics to vintage fashions, everyone is welcome under the candy-striped awnings that pop up along the quayside. Unfortunately, in search of respite from the Soto sun, I found the gelato truck was closed so I had to settle for a cerveza. But I was spoilt for choice, with high quality café’s, bars and restaurants on every corner of the port. At The Hairy Lemon, a favourite expat haunt, I got chatting to James Eden, 38, from Kent. “Soto has a great ambience, and we love coming here to get away from the bustling coast,” he explains. “It’s obviously a bit pricier but it’s worth it, and my wife likes the shopping. “We have a place nearby in Casares but if I could afford somewhere here I

would snap it up in a heartbeat.” Despite its upmarket nature, this enigmatic resort 25km east of Gibraltar is full of mostly down-toearth and warm-hearted people. “You don’t have to be a snob to get on in Sotogrande, people aren’t like that here,” Sarah Smith, 51, tells me as she watches her son at padel tennis training. “To be honest it’s nowhere near as flashy as Marbella where people like to show off their wealth. “People in Soto are a lot more genuine, they mind their own business, meet up with friends and have a

good time. We’re all just trying to live the good life.” Her words resonated as I drove through Sotogrande’s leafy avenues to Galerias Paniagua, the bijou commercial centre where the residents buy their foreign newspapers and paperbacks and can eat out when they don’t want to cook in, and where I bump into Graham and Jane Astle from Cheshire were enjoying a late lunch. “There’s a huge mix of nationalities, it’s not a British bubble which is what we love about it,” explains Graham, 71. “On top of that it is easy to make friends as everyone is so approachable.” Of that I certainly concur. Maybe it’s the tranquility lacking in Marbs or Banus, or perhaps the beautiful views of Gibraltar from all around. Aside from its sports and familyfriendly beach bars, Soto also has nice beaches to relax on. And had work not beckoned the following morning, it’s more than likely a cabana and cocktail session would have been calling my name. Perhaps next time. I left Soto reluctantly, sad that I couldn’t stay longer, jealous that I wasn’t part of this close-knit community. But I’ll be back and, having met a whole cast of hospitable residents, I know that I will be welcomed as if I were one of their own.

Savills boss and golf fanatic James Stewart is ‘buzzing’ about Soto’s property market after a difficult 2016

H

August 2nd - August 15th 2017

E’S swung the irons with Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros, shared Valderrama’s greens with US President George Bush Snr and teed off with Prince Andrew... few people have enjoyed better job perks than James Stewart whose business is associated with the UK’s biggest estate agents, Savills. But he has certainly earned it. Despite decorating his office with photographs of famous golf partners and retelling stories of how he helped bring the Ryder Cup to Spain for the very first time, it is clear that James’ first and most important love is his business. And after 35 years in Spain and 18 years in Pueblo Nuevo there is not much James doesn’t know about the property market, which is good news for Soto. “I am very optimistic about Sotogrande,” he says. “Last year was difficult with the shock Brexit result and the following uncertainty, but things have recovered relatively quickly. “The British have dropped a little but we are seeing them come back, additionally, the Spanish market is growing stronger as the economy grows and people have more money to spend.” And Sotogrande’s appeal as the ideal spot for a new home just keeps growing. “There are around 20 new restaurants, bars and shops,” explains

we are Out of the bunker Stewart, “it means there are a lot more people here than last year, there is a real buzz about the place again which is exciting. “We expect to finish the year off in a strong position.” Outside of the property world, James loves to be on the golf course... in particular in Sotogrande’s esteemed Valderrama where he is a member. A member for 30 years, his love-affair with the club dates back to the early 90s when club owner Jaime Ortiz-Patiño brought him in to help bring the Ryder Cup to Spain. “It was a great honour for me and I got to meet some top players,” he says. “Seve

I felt huge relief when the ball fell in the hole.” With a separate office in Puerto Sotogrande, James Stewart in association with Savills has established itself as a top agent for Sotogrande and surrounding areas. Hot to trot Barking up the right tree C Boutique products are the result of an nine year process that begins in the Spanish and Portuguese cork forests. Cork trees live for approximately 300 years and are harvested every nine years, removing only the outer bark. It takes 20 to 25 years before the first cork can be removed from the Cork Oak tree. Raw planks of cork are then boiled making them flexible and elastic. This cork skin is extremely lightweight, waterproof, vegan, durable, and most important to us at C Boutique, eco friendly. A mature cork oak tree will produce hundreds of kilos of cork skin at each harvest, and lives for many generations. OTOGRANDE'S youngest Horse riding school is the hippest in town. Set up three years ago by Cristina Hernaiz, Hipica La Paz stands out from the other stables for its hands on approach. Riders of all ages are welcome, and can enjoy everything from light trotting to dressage and jumping, and all take part in brushing, stableclearing, feeding and more. "We like our students to get a lot more involved with the horses here," explains Cristina, "it's very interactive, so you have lots of fun but also learn a lot about horses

while doing it." No one knows this more than the kids at the summer Pony Camp, held from Monday to Fridays from 9:30am to 1:30pm. "They are doing everything from bringing the ponies in from the field, brushing them, clearing their stables, and of course riding them," explains Cristina, "we make sure it's a really friendly atmosphere and an easygoing place to have fun and learn about horses." SOME 80,000 people are descending upon Sotogrande for the annual World Polo Tour circuit event at Santa Maria Polo Club. For a month, the ‘Wimbledon of polo pitches’ is hosting ten teams of 50 horses and 200 staff, along with spectators, who include the Brunei and British royals. Four of the tournament’s championship cups are classified as World Tour cups, signifying the event’s prestige. And equally prestigious is the host club. The club’s PR manager Pilar de la Puente told the Olive Press: “Sotogrande is the known as ‘the cathedral of European polo.’ It’s the best club in Europe and the ranked third in the world.” Though the tournament is unsurprisingly posh, with such high-end sponsors as Maserati and Cartier, it does have one bit of democratic flare. For every match except the final, attendance is open and free to the public, with crowds usually growing above 50,000, and this year is promising to be the biggest yet.

Bad deal BRITISH holidaymakers heading to Spain have been stung by dismal exchange rates. One airport’s bureau de change offered just €0.88 to the pound on the busiest travel day of the year. The pound has slumped to its worst rate of 2017 after David Davis announced Brexit would go ahead whether or not a trade deal was in place with the EU. The low market value has allowed airport currency exchanges to sell euros at a pitiful rate, with the Forexchange at Cardiff Airport offering walk-up rates of just 88 cents, one of the worst ever seen. Other airports provided little better, with Birmingham providing €0.96 to the pound, Moneycorp at Gatwick just €0.97 and ICE and Travelex at Heathrow a smidge over one euro at €1.01, according to currency analysts FairFX.

National press slams Marbella’s growing ‘trash and noise tourism’

LERTED by groups of neighbours suffering from a small number of establishments throwing endless daytime parties with blasting music, Spanish national TV press has taken at interest in Marbella’s night, as well as day, party life. Among the venues investigated is a hotel, located close to Marbella, that runs like a de facto day disco. But also clubs that are offering unlawful live concerts with expensive DJs and similar functions. The Andalusian Ombudsman already sent a threat in the form of an extensive report to all town halls in Andalucia reminding licensing department officials in charge of supervising summer clubs, open air discos and other infringing establishments that they are likely to be prosecuted criminally if they grant music licenses in breach of Decree 78/2002 of Andalucia. According to the Ombudsman’s report, except for occasional or exceptional concerts or recreational activities for the public, music in Andalusia can only be played in private establishments catalogued as ‘bars or pubs’ or ‘discotheques/night clubs’, with adequate soundproofing, and always within the premises - never outside. Besides these cases, it is illegal for a town hall to grant permissions, licenses or authorizations for music to be played in day bars, pools, restaurants or hotels.

There are serious fears that Marbella is becoming a stag-and-hen-party destination and national TV station Cuatro Television, who sent a crew to film scenes not dissimilar to those regularly taking place in resorts such as Mallorca, Magaluf, has picked up on this. Illegal parties were also filmed and will be exposed on the tv channel.

Ryanair Debate

Animal abuse? Outrage at animal mistreatment This makes me so angry (Exhausted horse collapses on ground in extreme heat in La Linea, issue 270). It happens every year in the south of Spain. I’ve unfortunately seen it in Sevilla and Malaga. Why oh why do so many Spanish people disregard animals lives?

Scaremongering I'm sure Europe won't be wanting to miss out on the income from tourism that uk citizens spend each year - of course a deal will be made...Scaremongering.

Retaliation

I'm not at all worried, The Messiah Nigel Farage said nothing would change after Brexit, (British citizens in the EU could lose right to live in another EU country post-#Brexit, issue 270). he even said his herd of unicorns would double in size once restrictions on breeding by the EU were removed.

If UK does not honour the current open skies EU agreement then it's just down to cost and hassle. The fact that an Irish airline can fly from UK to Spain, or Portugal to France is only possible due to this agreement. If the UK pulls out then surely the French and Germans will retaliate with heavy levies.

Why is it not possible for them to make this underground (Government will double parking spaces at Grand Parade with new car park, issue 270)? Looks horrible!

David and Ann Warnes, Galera

Stupid remarks I’m almost speechless at these stupid remarks, only almost. Does O’leary really think that Spain for instance is going to turn it’s back on 17 million UK tourists. I bet a double quick deal will be done on this issue. He also needs to remember Ryanair is not the only budget airline on the block. Peter

very successful one at that. Unlike most airlines he makes record profits by offering what the majority of passengers want i.e. inexpensive travel. The passengers get to ride in modern aircraft and experience few delays. Many people love to hate him and his airline but if you care to check, all that happens, is Ryanair gets even more passengers. O’Leary speaks his mind & holds back no punches. That’s why he’s successful & when he’s listened to & his warnings taken into account and acted on accordingly, both his airline and the others that offer services to Europe, will continue to succeed. If not, then inexpensive travel to the EU from the UK after Brexit will cease to exist. David

Simon Manley’s take on the tortilla de patatas

Cheers to that! ONE of the most important questions in Spanish history has finally been answered which city has the cheapest beer? New figures show Cadiz is the best city in the entire country to find a good-value cerveza. With a caña there costing on average just €1.25, it beat other low-cost regions like Aragon (€1.59), Murcia (€1.60) and Castilla La Mancha (€1.75). Madrid is the most expensive at €2.93, followed by Barcelona at €2.29 and then Mallorca at €2.25. An average caña in Malaga will cost you €2.12 The nationwide average is €1.87, according to the Cuponation survey. Statistics provided by the Federacion Espanola de Hosteleria y Restauracion (FEHR) reveal Spain has 101,397 bars, one for every 458 inhabitants. Spaniards drink an estimated 2.1 billion litres of beer a year.

A UK ambassador to Madrid was scolded for committing a ‘faux pas’ on Spanish national TV. Ambassador to Madrid Simon Manley committed the ‘atrocity’ of adding chorizo to spain’s famous tortilla de patatas, on the late-night cooking show El Comidista. The show’s host, Mikel Iturriaga, who had entered the ambassador’s residence “on a diplomatic mission to defend Spanish omelette” said: “You do some pretty awful things with Spanish om-

But Manley had a surprise up his sleeve: “I’ve made a tortilla too,” he said “A British tortilla using the recipe from our famous Jamie Oliver.” He then COOKING: On TV show offered it to Iturriaga, who while admitting it was ‘tasty’, referred to it as a cake, not an omA FIRE broke out at a restaurant in Watergardens last weekelette. end. Happy campers OVER 120 children registered to take part in the The Gibraltar FA's annual summer camp. The two-week programme aimed to develop the children’s skills in a fun environment with a ‘play without pressure’ ethos. Technical Director Desi Curry and Grassroots Manager Leslie Asquez, who oversaw the Summer Camp, said they were pleased with the turnout, the enthusiasm of the children and the overall standard that was on display at the Victoria Stadium throughout the two weeks. After the final session on July 28, all the youngsters, parents and coaches posed for a photo. GFA Coaches presented each child with a Gibraltar kit before they left.

The team will soon begin preparing for the next Commonwealth Games, which will be held in the Gold Coast, Australia next year.

RAFAEL Nadal has said he is ready to battle Roger Federer in the race to end the year as world No 1. Briton Andy Murray still holds the top spot in the latest ATP rankings, but his lead over second-placed Nadal has shrunk to less than 300 points. Meanwhile, Federer's victory at Wimbledon shot him up to third. "The truth is, I always follow my own path," Nadal said on Argentine talk show, Con Amigos Asi. "It's true that we (Roger and I) are better prepared to compete for nice things at the end of the year but it depends on what we're able to do from now until the end of the year. BUDDING decorators are being invited to give the Referendum Steps a much-needed makeover. In preparation for this year’s National Day, which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Referendum vote, the Youth Service is looking for youngsters to help repaint the iconic steps. Those aged between 12 and 18 are invited to take part between August 10 and 18. The steps, located on Devil’s Gap Road, were painted after the referendum vote in 1967. They were last repainted in 2011. Find out more at a youth centre meeting on August 8, or visit youth.gi.

The monkeys are also known for rummaging through rubbish in the town centre, potentially posing a risk to human health. Gibraltar is home to the only population of wild monkeys in Europe, and their numbers are growing. At present, an estimated 300 animals in five troops live in the Upper Rock and are huge draws for visitors to Gibraltar.

TWO road barriers have been repainted after a local poet decorated them with his musings. David Bentata had graffitied on the barriers on July 18, attracting curiosity to the concrete blocks. However, a mere few days later, the writings had disappeared. The government said the barriers are its property, and that defacing them is against the law When questioned about whether he had gained permission, Bentata said: “ask for permission the answer will be no”
