HAVING A FINE TIME! POLICE handed out nearly 200 fines in a two-day crackdown in Playa de Palma. An incredible 40 officers roamed the streets handing out penalties, the majority of whom were tourists. In total, 90 people were fined for drinking in the streets - each facing fines of up to €1,500. Meanwhile, 40 people were sanctioned for walking on the road rather than the pavement, while 34 prostitutes were fined, one of whom had an active arrest warrant for trafficking women. In addition, dozens of illegal street vendors were snared, while their goods were seized.

Corruption and bad planning has seen €100 billion squandered on ‘unnecessary’ projects around Spain By Laurence Dollimore

CYCLISTS: Into the light

Wheely generous A GENEROUS expat has offered to pay half the bill to light the dangerous Formentor tunnel. The Swiss tycoon wants to see the only tunnel without lighting on the island finally lit up in a bid to help cyclists. Max Hurzeler made the generous offer, after living nearby for years. “It will not be more than €20,000,” he said. “Cycling through it by bicycle is very dangerous because it is very dark and when you are in the centre you do not see the exit.” The tunnel is especially dangerous for tourists unaware of the situation and quickly try to get through the 300 metres of darkness, causing many accidents. The government has yet to reUntitled-1.pdf 1 16/06/2017 spond to the offer.

SPAIN has squandered around €97 billion on ‘unnecessary’ infrastructure projects, a damning new study has found. Unused airports, vanity museums, defunct desalination plants and deserted toll roads are just some of the wasteful projects undertaken. The fast-track AVE railway network - including various lines now shut - accounts for €26.2 billion of bad investment alone. Amid the schemes criticised are Mallorca’s Manacor highway, which will end up costing €500m more than originally planned; as well as the Palma Arena project, which went up from €45m on planned budget, to €110m. The Desalination Plant of Ciutadella, in Menorca, is also slammed for its inefficient use. The staggering statistics have been published in a comprehensive joint report undertaken by nine leading universities around the country. In total, Spain spent over €81 billion on infrastructure that was ‘unnecessary, abandoned, underutilised or poorly planned’ between 1995 and 2016. A further €16 billion will have 15:36

Black hole DISGRACE: Billions wasted on toll roads and projects like Palma Arena been wasted once the amounts already pledged are taken into account. Regional authority squandering amounted to €34.6 billion of the total, much of it spent on parks, hospitals, cultural centres and events. The list of big spenders is headed by the regional governments of Catalonia (€9.1 billion), Madrid (€7.7 billion), Valencia (€5.9 billion) and

Andalucia (€2.7 billion). In the comprehensive national study of wasteful spending, undertaken by universities including Barcelona, Sevilla and Madrid’s Complutense, much of the problem was blamed on corruption. While Spanish governments misspent the equivalent of 5% of gross domestic product (GDP) between 1985 and 1995, this figure soared to 20% of GDP

from 1996 to 2007. From the beginning of the economic crisis until 2016, it has come down to around 3%. Among the projects singled out for criticism are the airport in Castellon, tram lines in Andalucia and the Pedrizas toll motorway, north of Malaga.Nearly €5 billion was sunk into nearly deserted toll roads outside Madrid, which had to be bailed out by the state.

Numerous desalination plants, particularly around Alicante, represented over €2.3 billion in ‘cost overruns, inefficiencies or mismanagement’ alone. The City of the Environment in Soria, the City of Light in Alicante, the City of Justice in Madrid, the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, and the Alicante theme park Terra Mítica, were all labelled as ‘unnecessary projects’. While a third of the country’s airports are unnecessary - and many were ‘built to attract votes’ - the biggest waste by far though went on AVE railway projects that did not produce the kind of social benefits expected. There were ‘too many multimillion-euro train stations, closed lines, stretches that were dropped halfway through construction, unnecessary lines, and cost overruns’, the report stated. “It was done without a proper cost/benefit analysis, and often on the basis of estimates of future users or earnings supported by a scenario of economic euphoria that was as evident as it was fleeting,” adds the report. Researchers underscored the cost overruns on the AVE lines connecting Madrid, Barcelona and the French border (over €8.9 billion) and on the Pajares Tunnel (€3.5 billion).

NEWS IN BRIEF

Hear us roar ANTI-tourism protesters have chained themselves to Gaudi's iconic dragon in Barcelona while calling for a ban on new hotels to deter holidaymakers.

Dying off SPAIN’S population registered a net loss of 31,245 people in 2017 as the number of births dropped 4.5% while the number of deaths rose 3.2%. It’s the first net loss since 1941.

Bus birth A WOMAN in Palma suddenly went into labour while travelling on the local EMT bus route.

Blow up ban A LAD from Ireland has been banned from flying with Jet2 after a flight from Belfast to Ibiza had to stop in France to kick off the drunk passenger - who was carrying a large inflatable doll.

Drowned A YOUTH, 22, from Colombia drowned while swimming with friends at Palma’s Can Pere Antoni beach.

Tattoo horror

Brothers ‘could be scarred for life’ after reaction to holiday henna tattoos TWO brothers could be scarred for life after getting henna tattoos on holiday in Mallorca. British tourists Nathaniel Hainsworth, 13, and Kane Archibald, seven, suffered nasty chemical reactions to the temporary tattoos. The pair broke out in blisters eight days after ‘getting inked’ while staying in Cala Bona. Nathaniel was left with an angry, red leopard on his back, while Kane's arm was covered in an inflamed lizard. Mum Carrie Archibald also had a henna tattoo but was spared the painful reaction. "On our last day we spotted

June 21st - July 4th 2018

INKED: Scarred an old man in a shop who was doing them. We all got them, they looked great,” she said. "There was no reaction at all. Everything seemed fine and the kids were really happy." But, a week after getting home to Sunderland, the tattoos began to swell up, itch

and burn. "The boys came home from school and Kane said his arm was itchy and hot and hurt to touch. "A doctor at A&E said it was an allergic reaction.

Dead pilot located THE body of a pilot and his firefighting plane have been located off Mallorca’s northern coast. Experienced flyer Antonio Alfaro Martín, 46, crashed near Pollensa’s Cala Sant Vicens, during a routine surveillance patrol, near Valldemossa. It took rescuers three days to locate the plane that was 60m

underwater. Drones, ships, and around 300 officers, troops and firefighters searched until a ship’s sonar located the plane. The autopsy revealed he died from injuries sustained while crashing into the sea, and not from a stroke or heart attack before the crash.

"But on the ninth day they started to get really angry and red so I took them back and they were referred to a specialist burns unit in Newcastle. "There were loads of little blisters all over and they were getting worse." This time, medics said they were chemical burns, and warned the boys they might be scarred for life. The tattoos were created using black henna, which contains a chemical called paraphenylenediamine (PPD).

Boxes of bud A MARIJUANA farm has been raided after a police officer on a routine traffic stop found two boxes of the drug in a van. The 39-year-old driver was found with nearly €3,000 in cash on him, leading officials to suspect he was dealing. A search of the man's farm in Campos found a vast number of marijuana plants, along with a large amount of hash ready to be sold.

JAILED: Urdangarin

Checking in for Chokey IT is unlikely to have gold taps and flunkies running around. But it is the hand-picked prison chosen by Spain’s first royal to face a sentence behind bars. Inaki Urdangarin, the king’s brother-in-law, arrived at Brieva prison, near Madrid, this week, to start a five year and 10 month sentence for corruption. It comes after the Supreme Court rejected his appeal against the embezzling charge, which found him guilty of taking nearly €6 million between 2004 and 2006 from a non-profit foundation he headed in Mallorca. The 50-year-old former Olympic handball medal winner, who is married to King Felipe’s sister, will join just over 100 other prisoners at the facility.

Video rap HE’S popped up again… but this time in a special video message to fans. In a passionate missive fugitive rapper Valtonyc insisted ‘essential rights are not being respected’ in Spain… adding that he would ‘keep fighting today and tomorrow’. He had recorded the video from his hideout, believed to be in Belgium, for a special concert for Freedom of Speech in Palma. During the event at Palma Arena, another artist Pablo Hasel, burned a photograph of the king on the stage.

Resident Idris HE is best known as the suave TV detective Luther and for his award-winning portrayal of Nelson Mandela in Long Walk to Freedom. Now Idris Elba is manning the decks in a completely different guise… beginning a 15-week residency as an Ibiza DJ. Fulfilling a lifetime dream, the London-born star - named among the world’s most influential people by Time Magazine - has rolled onto the island. Elba, who has an OBE for his services to British drama, has been spotted with fiancee Sabrina Dhowre, and his threeyear-old son Winston enjoying the beach life. The Hollywood superstar, who starred in the Avengers series and Thor, will be spending the summer behind the DJ booth at Lio in Marina Botafoch. “It's my dream and destiny to have a residency in Ibiza. I can't wait to celebrate that with you every Sunday this summer at Lio,” he said.

Spain-bound IT is bound to be one of the most controversial visits in decades. Donald Trump has vowed to visit Spain in the near future, he revealed this week. It comes after the US president met with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the White House. The royal couple were on an official five-day visit to the US, which saw them visit New Orleans, Louisiana and Texas. At the end of the meeting Trump answered one of the questions aimed at him by reporters: “Are you planning to go to Spain?” “Yes. I will go to Spain,” he replied. “It’s a beautiful country. We were in Spain not too long ago and we loved it,” he added.

Culinary kings

Spain cleans up at 50 Best awards

THEY are the unprecedented stars of the global culinary scene. Spain’s top chefs have once again dominated the ranks at this year’s prestigious World’s 50 Best Restaurants event. A record seven Spanish restaurants secured places in the top 50, including three snapping up coveted spots in the top 10. Recognised as the most soughtafter title in the culinary world, the Roca brothers at El Celler de can Roca were delighted to see their Catalan restaurant move up to second place, having been third last year.

Paris trip SHE is best known for spinning the tunes during various annual club nights in the Balearics. But this time Paris Hilton has been simply playing the tourist in Ibiza with fiancée Chris Zylka, in the run up to their wedding. Dozens of TV networks have made offers to the hotel heiress to exclusively cover the upcoming Hollywood wedding. The couple strolled the streets and enjoyed some time off after brother Barron's wedding in St. Barts.

STARS: Aduriz, the Roca brothers and (top) Arguinzoniz

They were pipped at the post by Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana, in Italy, while Mirazur, in France, came in third. The trio - headed up by chef Joan, sommelier Josep and Jordi as a master pâtissier - is world famous for its experimental extraordinary dishes. Meanwhile, the Basque Coun-

try’s very own Andoni Luis Aduriz’s rural restaurant, Mugaritz, stayed put for a second year in ninth place. Another Basque favourite Victor Arguinzoniz’s Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo fell four places to tenth. Also in the top 50, were Disfrutar, in Barcelona, at 18, Arzak, in San Sebastian, at 31, Tickets, in Barcelona, at 32, and Azurmendi, near Bilbao, at 43. The awards night, held last night at the Palacio Euskalduna, in Bilbao, saw the Basque city welcome some of the biggest names in gastronomy with a red carpet and a glamorous reception. Since the awards were launched in 2002, Spanish restaurants have won the best in the world a staggering seven times, with El Bulli taking the top spot five times and El Cellar de Can Roca twice. America got six restaurants in the Top 50, with England getting four, Italy four, France four and Peru three. Spain also managed to get five more restaurants in the top 100, including Diverxo, in Madrid and Quique Dacosta, in Alicante.

DRAMA: Carmen and parents (top)

A Stella start THERE’S nothing like joining the family firm and Stella del Carmen, daughter of Spain’s favourite actor Antonio Banderas and ex-wife Melanie Griffith, has announced her intention to study drama. “It surprised us because she has never wanted to be in front of the camera,” said Banderas. A regular visitor to Malaga, especially when her father takes part in the annual Semana Santa processions, Stella will study Drama at the University of Southern California. She lists cinema, poetry and literature as her three main passions.

Refugees welcome! REFUGEES from the Aquarius ship which docked in Andalucia last week will be housed at the former convent of Son Rapinya, in Palma. Around 25 migrants are expected to be welcomed on the island, with the government preparing to have homes ready for them in early July. The convent, which has 18 rooms for up to 30 people, has been rented out by the Ministry of Social Services for the next seven years. It comes as over 900 migrants arrived in Andalucia at the weekend, after Italy and Malta refused to take any more refugees. Spain’s new government was praised by Unesco after it agreed to take in 630 migrants from the Gibraltarregistered ship Aquarius last week. Local Mallorcan hotels have agreed to donate furniture for the incoming families.

Bin the plan A MALLORCA town has been slammed after it raised the cost of collecting rubbish by more than EIGHT times. Muro town hall has been criticised by the local tourist federation after rates went up by more than 800 percent for homes that put up tourists.

THREE more victims of ‘lethal’ drug Nolotil have revealed how they have suffered after taking the UK-banned painkiller. It comes just weeks before a health campaigner is set to take her findings to a meeting with Spain’s top medication governing body, in Madrid next month. In the last week alone three new victims have approached the Olive Press with their cases, which will all be included in the high level meeting. Brit, Adrian Bark, 55, revealed how he developed agranulocitosis - which kills almost all white blood cells - after taking Nolotil for back pain in 2010. By Elisa Menendez

PEDRO Sanchez has vowed to move the remains of dictator Franco from the Valley of the Fallen and turn the site into a monument of reconciliation. Spain’s new prime minister revealed plans to turn the Madrid mausoleum into a ‘memorial about the fight against fascism’ during his first TV interview.

Countdown on The Malaga-based expat was rushed to hospital with a ‘raging fever’ and rapidly receding gums in 2010. He was kept in a glass isolation booth for two weeks to avoid catching infections. “Thankfully I wasn't aware at the time of the risks… I consider myself very lucky,” he added. Scottish victim, Joan Judge, 67, explained how she had fingers and parts of her feet amputated after being ‘diag-

nosed with sepsis due to a catastrophic reaction to Nolotil’ in 2013. The expat only took Nolotil for a few days for pain relief until she was admitted to hospital. She said: “The amputations resulted from gangrene. Sepsis causes a drastic drop in blood pressure which prevents the normal blood supply to the extremities of your body. “Thankfully I survived and although I'm missing fingers and more than half of

Dictator Franco to be finally exhumed to create huge memorial against fascism

The controversial site has faced huge criticism for being the only remaining monument dedicated to a fascist leader in Europe. There Franco’s body was buried some 40 years ago. "We don't have a date yet, but the government will do it," said Sanchez. Largely built by Republican political prisoners under Franco’s regime between 1940 to 1958, the

Valley of the Fallen (Valle de los Caidos) holds the remains of over 33,000 people from both sides of the civil war. It comes after Rajoy’s PP government had blocked previous attempts to exhume the dictator, stating that digging up mass graves of lost loved ones will reopen a painful part of Spain’s history. However, Sanchez argued on Monday: “It’s not about opening wounds, it’s about closing them.”

No snap election SPAIN’S new prime minister will serve out the rest of the current term until elections in June 2020. Pedro Sanchez, who ousted conservative leader Mariano Rajoy in a no-confidence vote this month, said he will not call for a snap election in a bid to ‘normalise’ the country’s political climate. “I plan to call elections in 2020, when the term of office ends,” he stated this week. It comes after the PSOE leader had hinted that he would call an election immediately after replacing Rajoy as PM. Despite repeated calls from opposition parties for an election, PSOE’s ministers have said they need time to enact their policies.

HE Costa del Sol is a great place to live. Mostly because everyone and anyone is made to feel welcome, making it a brilliant mix of people and characters from all over the world. After living here for some time, you begin to notice there are groups of expats that fall into certain categories. In the name of good fun, we have rounded some of them up below.

OPINION Lost opportunities IT is scandalous that so much public money has been wasted on ‘unnecessary’ infrastructure projects around Spain when so many far worthier projects have yet to see the light of day. How was it possible that so many airports, tram and railway lines were built - and then closed - when vital projects, such as a train along the Costa del Sol hasn’t even begun? Such a project would totally transform Spain’s busiest coastline, with the sudden increase in workers’ mobility guaranteed to lead to an influx of new businesses choosing to set up here. Instead, almost €100 billion has been wasted on projects that have done little else than win politicians votes (and often kickbacks) as well as fill the pockets of construction companies. Yet again Spain’s leaders have shown they work for no one but themselves and for those who likely make large donations to their party or election campaigns. When will Spain wake up? It is the fastest growing economy in the EU and has so much potential… if it made the right decisions for the good of the country.

June 21st - July 4th 2018

The Estate Agent Making up around 90% of the Costa del Sol population, you’ll find the estate agent in its natural habitat between Marbella and Estepona. They’re probably wearing a strong blazer/unbuttoned shirt paired with slip on loafers, and can be spotted in La Sala at any time of the day.

The Classic Expat Well-mannered and quiet, the classic expat usually comes in a pair. They are elderly and can be spotted walking around the pueblos from around 10am. A giveaway is threequarter-length cargo shorts paired with socks and sandals, and possibly a sunhat.

The Billionaire You’ll know when they’re here, their huge yachts will be docked in Puerto Banus while holidaymakers snap selfies next to their Lamborghinis and Bentleys. You’ll spot them at pricey hangouts like Olivia Valere or Puente Romano’s Le Suite. If they’re male, they’ll probably be surrounded by young beautiful women with eastern European accents.

Who do you think you are? The Longtimers They’ve been here since the 80s or longer and know EVERYTHING that has come to pass on the Costas - or inland! These holders of secrets are enjoying their retired lives and can be found sipping vino at organised lunches up and down the coast.

The Networker They’ll be at every event handing out their cards like its candy, and will always know the latest goss on the who’s who on the coast. And if they’re not organising a ‘networking lunch’ themselves, they will always have a charity event to invite you to – usually a fashion show or Ladies Day.

DID YOU

The midsummer holiday is celebrated around the world in different ways and dates back centuries. In Spain it is known as San Juan, in Denmark Sankthans, while Norway celebrates Jonsok and Portugal honours Saint John as São João. Many of today’s celebrations, Catholic, Christian or otherwise, have deep roots in pre-Christian summer solstice celebrations. Almost all celebrations, especially in South America and Europe, involve bonfires or beaches – and paper lanterns have become popular over the years too. Water is also a common element, with those that honour John the Baptist using it as a sign of rebirth and cleansing. There are variations as well, with some families jumping over the fire, a popular tradition in Russia and Hungary, while others throw coins.

All in honour of Saint John the Baptist, San Juan, guarantees the biggest beach parties of the year around the summer solstice. It takes place on June 23, on the eve of the saint's honoured day, with traditions of fire and water commonly combined with celebrations of the shortest night of the year. It is also the one day a year when bonfires and BBQ's are allowed on beaches. Beaches will start to fill up all afternoon, with friends and family gathering together with food and drink, lighting a big fire as the sun goes down, and walking into the sea at midnight to wash away the year's sins. Live music fills town squares, with parades and processions travelling through many big towns. The celebrations are particularly big in Son Servera, Deia, Muro and Manacor with San Juan being their patron saint. In each there are extra celebrations with sporting events, live music, and parties running all day and night – Deia also has a popular fishing contest. Palma turns the feast day into a weekend event, with Nit de Foc, Night of Fire, kicking off the celebrations. As always there will be fireworks, devils and demons running the roads, street parties and plenty of bonfires and BBQ's.

Jagger jaunt HE will easily be the most famous name to perform in Palma this summer. But John Jagger isn’t quite the same draw as his more famous uncle, Mick. The nephew of the Rolling Stone star is nonetheless expected to shine when he plays in Palma on July 20. The special guest of the Spanish Vargas Blues Band, he will be performing some tracks off his upcoming album. The Vargas Blues Band takes inspiration from Stevie Ray Vaughan, with surprising influences from Latin America and Flamenco.

GO FISH FROM Andratx to Pollensa and to the tiny village of Buger, there will be numerous celebrations next weekend to celebrate St Peter’s day. The fisherman apostle is a popular figure in the many fishing villages around the island, with June 29 being his day. Expect fresh seafood and local wine, live music and fun activities for all ages throughout the island.

LATE FOR A VERY IMPORTANT DATE Having moved to Deia designer Matthew Williamson is starting to leave his colourful mark on the area, writes Gillian Keller A SPLASH of floral blue and soft pinks have created one of the island’s hippest suites. Pricy break THE Balearics have the most expensive rentals in Spain. During the low season the average price is €202 per night, while in high season it is €264, over €60 more than anywhere else in Spain, claims website Holidu. Pollensa has the highest average of €373 a night, with Ibiza town in second with €371. Bargain basement Lanzarote, in the Canaries, is a mere €141 a night in high season.

having bought and renovated a house there. The designer, who is popular with stars including Anna Wintour and Sienna Miller, has moved into the interiors market and recently finished renovating the courtyard of London’s hip Blakes Hotel. But Mallorca has become his permanent home. “I fell in love with Deià the first moment I arrived. I’d enjoyed a scenic drive up into the mountains and through the pretty town of Valdem-

ossa,” he recently explained. “Deià is such a hidden gem and I really felt it was a place I wanted to explore more.” Williamson, who is known for his vibrant patterns and colours, is expected to undertake more work around the island. “For Suite 67 I’ve taken inspiration from the hotel’s rich history, the local architecture and scenery, and worked with nearby craftspeople and artists,” the designer continued.

FORMER prime minister Mariano Rajoy has shown up almost an hour late on his first day at his not-so new job. Newly retired from politics, Rajoy returned to his old civil service position as a property registrar in Alicante on Wednesday morning. He is set to work on a nine-to-five basis, five days a week. The former PP leader arrived at the office, where he last worked in 1 9 8 9 , in the town o f San-

ta Pola just five days after he resigned from his seat in Congress as prime minister. It comes one month after the conservative leader was unseated following new leader Pedro Sanchez’s noconfidence motion. A casually dressed Rajoy explained: “I don’t have much more to add to what I have already said. I have retired from politics and returned to where I was before. “I have dedicated many years to political life and this is different.”

Pricy land THE AVERAGE price of land in the Balearics is €387 per square metre, behind only Madrid and Barcelona. Madrid is the most expensive city, with the average square metre costing buyers €478, a 4% rise on last year. Barcelona costs €436 per metre square, which is a 7% drop on 2017. On a national level, land prices have increased 22% over the last year, the largest increase in recent years. At the cheap end of the market land in Albacete costs just €79 per metre, Castellon just €93 and Lleida €99 per metre square.

Amanda Butler on how Brexit has finally stopped influencing British buyers, while the Swedes have dropped off

Ivory towers

THE members of Spain’s anti-austerity party Podemos have voted unanimously that leader Pablo Iglesias should not step down after buying a €600,000 ‘luxury’ home. The party’s half a million members voted with a 70/30 split that it was not wrong for the staunch left-wing politician Pablo Iglesias to buy the property - which has a swimming pool and a guest house - in Galapagar, northwest of Madrid. He explained that he and his girlfriend, fellow Podemos polítician Irene Montero, need the extra space as they are about to have twins. Iglesias had previously criticised the former Economy Minister Luis de Guindos for buying a similarly priced apartment in 2012. “Would you hand the economic policy of the country to someone who spends 600,000 euros on a luxury apartment?,” Iglesias then tweeted. Several political commentators and real estate experts questioned the timing of the purchase of the house in Galapagar. “With the public data we have, it looks like the couple have taken on more risk than is advisable,” said Juan Villen, the head of mortgage services at Idealista. “It is not setting a good example to get into debt in this way, especially at a time when we’re asking for prudence from the financial industry to avoid the excesses of the past.” Iglesias and his partner took out a 90% mortgage of €540,000 on the property, which they plan to pay off over 30 years. I

T’S mid June, the sun is shining and temperatures seem to be finally back on track to normal – I even heard someone complaining about the heat the other day! With the warmer weather the restaurants are finally filling up, chilled wine being drunk, and the volume of tourists increasing. Mallorca can breathe a sigh of relief! This year's weather has affected many businesses on the island, although thankfully for me, the Brits have certainly been getting their confidence back - or at least their determination to get on with life, Brexit or not. The Swedes, on the other hand, have reigned in their thirst for Mallorca it seems, due to a mixture of bad weather and exchange rate. Hopefully, this will mean property prices won’t see the increases we saw last summer, since we certainly don’t want the boom and bust of the past when properties were so overpriced it became laughable. The desire for spacious frontline apartments seems to be ‘de rigueur’ at present and I showed some Danish clients a beautifully spacious five-bed duplex in the quieter Marina area of Palmanova, this week, with direct sea access and gorgeous views for €1.7m. Although they liked the property, their preference is for the Portals area, so although not ruled out, we continue to look. The most amazing thing is the location. Change it by just a kilometre and we are looking at a 40 to 80% increase in price for a similar size place very limited stock.

Getting on with life Feeling bookish?

Last week I also took on a really unusual old mill house in Ses Alqueries, Santa Eugenia, just 20 minutes from Palma. With an incredible eye for detail, the English owner has meticulously restored it, with strong and striking ‘Farrow and Ball’ colours, each room is a showcase for elegant antiques, and there is a huge made-to-measure floor to ceiling bookcase in the lounge, ready to display your First Edition book collection! The place is very quirky, with beamed ceilings and the original country kitchen nicely renovated.

An attractive stone clad spiral staircase leads up to a small tower room which leads onto a vast roof terrace looking out over beautiful countryside. The grounds are well landscaped, complete with covered terrace, swimming pool, pond and an independent guest apartment. With only two bedrooms in the main house, it won’t suit everyone, but is perhaps more suitable for a couple or small family with an eye for antiques, colour and, above all, the quieter life. GLASS house in the middle of Almeria’s Tabernas desert is giving new meaning to living with transparency. Available to rent on Airbnb, the villa’s walls are made entirely of see-through crystal. Although, being in the middle of nowhere, it’s unlikely to attract peeping Toms. Featuring just one single room and a glass-walled toilet, the Glass Pavilion is the brainchild of OFIS architects and Guardian Glass. The floor-to-ceiling windows are also structurally and thermally efficient and work with the light and shade to create the illusion of separate rooms. The flat roof reflects the desert back into the building, creating an immersive effect. Its angular design, pointed in the direction of the mountains, ensures that sunlight only reaches the interior of the home at cooler points of the day. The pavilion will remain as a holiday home for now, with guests being able to rent it for a week at a time on tourist sharing platforms like Airbnb. Just remember to throw no stones, people who live in glass houses shouldn’t.

Why you probably need an Xtreme Clean more than you know, writes Gillian Keller

HILE Mallorca is a beautiful island full of sun and sand, those same luxuries, along with everyday life, can dirty and damage your fabrics and floorings. The island’s very own expat-owned floor and upholstery cleaners, Xtreme Clean, have been scrubbing stains out of natural stone floors, carpets and rugs and fabrics of all materials for over ten years. Ancient stone and antique rugs are a speciality of the highly qualified team, all of which are trained by both the UK's National Carpet Cleaners Association

and the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certificates. “It is quite the serious business, when working with strong chemicals and delicate surfaces,” Kenneth told The Olive Press. “We get to a job, and whether it's a new superyacht that needs a scrub down or a villa on the coast with precious stones, we put our best foot forward, after taking off our shoes of course.” The team even brings their own door mats to the job, making sure they leave no trace behind. “It's surprising how many people forget to clean their mattress, you don't just wash the trousers and not the underPOPE Francis has weighed into the energy debate by urging the pants,” Kenneth added, world’s top petroleum and gas companies to get moving on energy as many people forget transition. that after six months a In the surprise speech, the pontiff said he was realistic about the mattress can be very challenges ahead and the need to produce enough energy for every grubby inside. person on the planet by exploiting resources without compromis-

Chefs for change THREE of the world's best chefs have joined forces to bridge the gap between high-end cuisine and international development. Spain’s Joan Roca and Eneko Atxa and Gaggan Anand, from India, spoke out about how agriculture is the vital ingredient uniting the world's best chefs and the planet's most remote rural communities at the 50 Best Talks event in San Sebastian. All three have been collaborating with NGOs like Farm Africa and TechnoServe and have founded Chefs for Change which will campaign for sustainable farming in rural com-

HE is well known for cooking with it, as well as promoting it with his love of the Mediterranean diet. But now superchef Jamie Oliver has admitted he rubs on his body every day. That is olive oil and he insists it is not just better for human skin, but is cheaper than usual moisturising creams. The British-born restaurateur is so sure about his theory that he has even applied it to three of his five children. Oliver argues that he is not the first one to use the technique, since the Romans famously practiced the beauty regime. Even Cleopatra poured olive oil over her skin together with milk baths as part of her beauty regiment. Jamie, who has filmed a number of times around Spain, admitted: “I use Clinique moisturiser on my face and I’m a massive believer in olive oil for the body. You just rub it in

It’s oil good Jamie Oliver rubs himself with Spain’s famous ‘liquid gold’ v igorously — it’s what the Romans used to do. “Why spend a fortune on creams when extra virgin olive oil is the purest thing? My legs are all lovely and soft.” Although the unique

method has its followers, like Selena Gómez, the specialists doubt its validity. Dermatologist Dr Sharon Wong says natural oils can damage the ‘barrier effect’ of the skin.

munities. Joan Roca, chef at El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, which has twice been ranked No 1 restaurant in the world, said: "A dish is much more than the sum of its ingredients. “If we consider its sourcing, we see that every ingredient has been created by a varied cast of human characters involved in every step of the food's journey from land to the plate. The Chefs for Change movement wants to give a voice to these rural food producers and their life stories, and empower them to grow."

Alcohol ban 1 MAGALUF is finally taking steps to curb its excessive drinking culture. Calvia town hall is to ban allinclusive alcohol packages at hotels and bars in the resort. It wants to halt drunken tourism revolving around ‘excessive consumption led by aggressive offers’ made by some bars. It hopes to end the culture of pub crawls that has led to a series of incidents and bad press around the world so far this year.

Alcohol ban 2 ALCOHOL is to be banned on all beaches in the Capdepera area after a recent spate of drunken vandalism, fights, and excessive late-night noise. It comes after two unflattering videos went viral, the first of naked tourists bathing in the city fountain in Cala Ratjada. The second showed a massive fight that broke out in the centre of town.

heavily laden suitcase trolleys being pushed slowly and precariously through the rather narrow arrivals doors and you’ll see exactly what I mean. Airport authorities are very strict about what you can and can’t do and you certainly can’t just turn up with a little booth or pop-up banner, so you have to think outside the box a bit. I actually am outside the box as it happens as I thought it would be a great

idea to place myself outside the door where there’s a very noticeable lottery booth. Oh yes it all seemed like such a good idea and all the client’s paperwork was updated accordingly so they knew how and where to find me. Hindsight is 20-20 as they say as I stand there among the smokers desperate for their first puff for several hours and the uncontrollable, unpredictable and incredibly loud German

stag parties and an impatient taxi queue. Can I just say at this point that being among several drunken stag parties isn’t nearly as much fun as it sounds. I have to hold up a sign with the expected clients names written on it, what could possibly go wrong? Let me say for the record that I really don’t hold Mr and Mrs Willey responsible for the carnage that followed. Throw in a noisy, dirty and intrusive con-

struction of an outside lift just where I am standing which ensures that with my hearing loss the clients and I have no chance of hearing what the other one says. Always a challenge but somehow I get them sent on their way. If you read my last column you’ll know that my little car, ElPandO the beat up old Fiat had unexpectedly died. Well after many calls and visits I had a missed call from the Gestoria in Palma. Like a lot of us I’m not very good on the phone with non-English speakers but actually managed to navigate the many selections and get through to the right person, not only that but we both understood enough for her to explain that they have finally placed it in my name and the papers allowing me to do something with it had been issued. Nothing earth shattering but these little triumphs go some way to make me feel like I’m managing to integrate into Mallorcan life.I popped down to collect them this morning, and so often had I been there that me and Maki at the desk are on first name terms, as I finally went to leave the office literally clapped and I swear I saw Maki wipe a tear from her eye. OK I made that bit up but they really did clap and wave me on my way. It felt a million miles from Swansea and the DVLA! lesley.kmallorca@gmail. com

Cheers, Rafa! MARIN Cilic has said he is glad Rafael Nadal withdrew from Queen’s because it means he has more of a chance of winning. The Croatian became the top seed in the grass tournament after Spaniard Nadal withdrew citing fitness issues. It comes after the Mallorquin’s recordbreaking 11th win at the French Open. And while Cilic claims it is a ‘pity’ Nadal is not present in London, he is hoping to use that to his advantage by going one better than last year and winning the competition, widely seen as the warm up to Wimbledon.

“Obviously it’s a pity that they’re not here but it’s probably better for us,” Cilic said. It is not known if Nadal will play at Wimbledon.

three of Portugal's attempts on target. Hierro, who was appointed on the eve of La Roja's opening game following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui, said he ‘embraced’ De Gea after the game. De Gea was named in the Professional Footballers' Association team of the year after an impressive season at Premier League runners-up United. But his error gifted Switzerland their goal in a 1-1 friendly draw just before Spain departed for Russia, and they have already conceded once more than in the whole of their triumphant 2010 World Cup campaign. "Only those of us who put on the gloves and go out on the field know how difficult it is," said De Gea. "The coach is with me. It was an error and these things can happen."

Oops! Wrong gear

Their first week was met with unexpected storms and choppy waters to navigate through. After a day full of strenuous work, the pair find a spot to land, pack up their gear and hike to a spot they can camp for the night. “Another beach, another hand full of plastic,” Cat told the Olive Press. “We haven't visited a place yet without plastic pollution littering the coastline.” This week the paddling pair are passing through the Bay of Palma, just over halfway around the island. Visit www.sollertosoller.com to learn more about the trip.

Tourists rushed to hospital after their car plunged down a cliff IT was like a scene out of the Italian Job… except their car ended up falling off the cliff. Two tourists were badly injured when they accidentally crashed through a barrier and sent their car down a ten me-

IT is one hell of a paddle. Two pals, Cat Friend, 28, and Valerie Brisbal, 41, are undertaking a 555-kilometre trip around the island in an attempt to set the world record for stand-up paddling. The goal is to raise €11,400 for Mallorca's Ondine Association's marine conservation programs. Cat from the UK and Valerie from Mallorca, are paddling as many kilometres a day as possible.

Although there were over a dozen tourists already on the beach by the 11am accident, no one bathing below was injured. The area was sealed off by police until a small investigation confirmed the cause of the accident, and a crane could lift the car to safety.

Social media marriage

PALS: Mark and Josh

IT is a wedding build up to keep the British tabloids frothing at the mouth. A whole raft of reality TV stars are on the island in the run up to the TOWIE wedding of the summer… with all of them keeping their legion of fans in the loop via social media. This time it is the turn of footballer Josh Wright, 27, brother of Mark Wright, who is set to marry this weekend in the north of the island. The Gillingham player is marrying his fiance Hollie Kane, 32, who has been showing off her nuptialready figure in a number of stunning shots this week around Pollensa. Mark Wright and his wife Michelle Keegan, currently starring in BBC drama Our Girl, have also been spotted in the area. The entire group have been putting numerous pictures up on social media throughout the week.
