Expat bar owners protest over draconian sound limiters stopping music quieter than a vacuum cleaner
The first edition of the Mallorca Olive Press is now on the loose… and totally free! Already voted the best expat paper in Spain, we now promise to deliver the news that really matters in Mallorca. Available in the four corners of the island, we also vow to deliver a blend of irresistible, entertaining and informative features… as well as campaigning on key issues and problems. Aimed at the huge foreign market in Mallorca, the readers will be a healthy mix of Scandinavian, Dutch and Germans… not to mention the British and Irish, of course.

ANTI-tourism groups are lining up a series of new protests around Mallorca, the Olive Press can reveal. Two local groups, Arran Palma and GOB-Mallorca, have confirmed plans to organize a number of demonstrations against the ‘mass touristification’ of the island. Both groups claim that too many tourists are visiting the Balearics and the unsustainable numbers are impacting heavily on the lives of the local population. Their comments fly in the face of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s recent condemnation of the Consell, which is set to introduce new laws reducing the number of holiday rentals on the island. “Mallorca has a very serious mass-tourism problem,” a representative from Arran Palma told the Olive Press this week. “It is completely focused on partying and there is no proper control,” the spokesperson, who asked to remain anonymous, continued. “Too many tourists have no respect and the problem can be seenUntitled-1.pdf throughout1the16/06/2017 island

According to the group little has changed this year and they have vowed to continue their ‘war’ against the growing number of visitors. the protest against the Symphony of the Seas, is also concerned about the ‘already saturated islands’. “The city is becoming a stage rather than somewhere to be lived in by its citizens,” claimed member Margalida Sastre. “It is leaving people without work, degrading their quality of life - it is an economic model that is not socially fair or environmentally sustainable.” The protests come as Palma

attack on Mallorca’s valuable tourism industry. Speaking at a PP conference in Palma this week, he accused the President of the Balearics, Francina Armengol, of having a ‘phobia towards everything that works and that is good for Spain’. He said she was running a ‘government which is dedicated to inventing problems and promoting division and confrontation’. The Balearic government is yet to respond to his comments. The Association of British Travel Agents has warned holidaymakers to be aware of rising ‘tourismaphobia’ in Mallorca.

‘I’m Pablo Escobar!’
AN incredible 400 police officers have been involved in one of the largest drug raids ever seen in Spain. The massive group of officers stormed the areas of Son Gotleu and La Soledad in Son Banya yesterday morning.
According to police, the area has been taken over by drug trafficking gangs in recent months, with locals being forced out or too scared to fight back. Over 20 people were arrested after police searched an incredible 60plus houses in the area.
One man was heard to shout: “I’m Pablo Escobar, I’m a narco!” as he was led away in handcuffs. “I do not have anything, you have not found anything on me!” Those arrested were put on a bus and sent straight to Palma police station before being questioned. TWO British brother have been arrested in Playa de Palma after trashing their hotel room. Security were alerted after alarming noises were coming from the fifth floor room. The two were found throwing alcohol bottles and furniture off the balcony onto the street. The two have caused a minimum €2,000 worth of damage, including breaking the hair dryer, the toilet, the doors, skirting boards and a desk. The hotel have denounced the siblings.
Andratx raid A DRUG raid in Andratx has led to 11 arrests and the seizure of more than a kilo of cocaine along with other illegal drugs and cash. The investigation, named 'operation nemea', began last December when officers discovered a freight truck regularly coming from Barcelona to Palma by ferry, before making deliveries to Andratx. Neighbours of the home being used to sell the drugs also called police to report the suspiciously high amount of people coming in and out of the house. The operation found and seized 2.5 kilos of hash, over a kilo of marijuana and cocaine and more than €8,000.

So it was little surprise to find TOWIE stars Yazmin Oukhellou and James Lock hanging out in the party town on a recent visit to the island. “When in Palma you gotta visit Magaluf at least once!” Yazmin tweeted to her followers, clearly struggling with her geography. Yazmin, 24, who has her own swimwear company, and Lock were also spotted poolside at the ME Mallorca Hotel and strolling along the beach in Portals. The duo were visiting the island for the opening party of Paradigm, a new rooftop bar overlooking the marina in Portals. Coronation Street stars Brooke Vincent and Katie McGlynn were also at the star-studded party.

Cyclist warning Wrong route A PUB crawl route has been dismantled in Magaluf, and two establishments have been fined for organising the tour without the proper paperwork. The sanctions came after police officers ran across 90 Brits on a pub crawl, wearing matching shirts saying ‘Spring Break Invasion’. Activities now banned under new city ordinances were found advertised in the pub crawl, including allnight free shots, wet T-shirt contests, and other games with excessive drinking. The company could be fined up to € 4,500 for ‘exercising the activity without the mandatory city license’, and breaching the bar’s license. It was also found the tour guides did not have the proper paperwork for performing their jobs, which could entail a fine up to €750 per person. Pub crawls are permitted on the strip, Punta Ballena, between 8pm and midnight, with a weeks notice to the city, and at most 20 participants – in matching shirts.
A SHOCKING five cyclists have died on the roads in the Balearics this year. In addition, the emergency services have responded to over 250 accidents involving cyclists.
Despite facing 80 years in prison over 16 charges, the King of the Night is out DISGRACED former nightlife magnate Tolo Cursach has been released on bail for a whopping €1million. The shock ruling comes after three previous attempts for bail were refused. The ‘King of the Night’s’ lawyer successfully convinced three judges he was no longer a flight risk, despite facing 80 years in prison. He was able to raise the money in just five hours, despite having his accounts frozen as part of the investigation. Cursach, who has been inside for 14 months, has been charged with homicide, drug trafficking, bribery and corruption. In total, he faces 16 separate charges also including extortion, coercion, crimes against public finances, money laun-
Police are now urging cyclists to act with ‘extreme caution’ on the roads. They have been told to wear protective gear, including a helmet, have lights and reflective cloth-
ing, and always use bike lanes or the hard shoulder. Drivers are also being reminded to leave 1.5 metres between cyclists and their vehicles while slowly over taking them.

dering and the illegal possession of weapons. The Mallorca-born nightclub magnate was allowed to leave
Palma jail via a side door to avoid having to face the media. His release comes despite for-
mer Judge Penalva expressing concerns that once out of prison, he could intimidate key witnesses in the on-going case. However, the new judge ruled that he is not a flight risk given his ‘solid’ family and business links on the island, his old age and willingness to list his property as collateral. The judge also insisted there had been no reports of a witness being intimidated in connection to the investigation for over six months. He must appear at court on the first Monday of every month.
Bigger pizza the action SPAIN has a bigger economy than Italy - official. The country’s gross domestic product overtook that of Italy in 2017, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF also predicts that Spain will become 7% richer than Italy over the next five years.
Fortunes
It is a massive rise given that only a decade ago Italy was 10% richer per capita. The numbers show the sharply different fortunes of two countries that were severely hit by the financial crash in 2007/8. While Spain is now one of the fastest growing countries in the EU, Italy is slacking. “Since the 16th century Italy and Spain keep overtaking each other — but they have something on us now,” said Carlo Alberto Carnevale Maffè, a professor at Milan’s Bocconi University. “Spain has been on a more robust growth trajectory since at least 2011.”

Victory as hospitals begin warning expats of dangerous painkiller Nolotil EXCLUSIVE: Elisa Menendez
ACCUSED: Anais
Bail for ‘stoned’ cyclist killer THE driver who ran over and killed German cyclist Christoph Bohnen has been released from jail after paying €10,000 bail. Anais Marco Batalla, 28, claims she was dazzled by the sun when driving on the MA15 and did not see the group of cyclists when she crashed into them. Batalla failed a roadside drug test after the incident and admitted smoking a large quantity of cannabis on the night before the accident. As part of the bail terms Batalla must give up her passport, agree not to leave the island and report to the court on the 1st and 15th of each month.
A SPANISH health network has warned its staff about a deadly painkiller that has left countless expats for dead. It comes after an Olive Press campaign into the drug Nolotil was picked up by a legal translator, leading to the ‘biggest’ drug probe in Spanish history. Marina Salud, which has dozens of health centres in Alicante, has issued a warning for staff to avoid giving Nolotil (Metamozil) to Anglo Saxon patients. It comes after the Deniabased group took heed that the drug can have serious side effects on pa-

AN employee from a company accused of selling rotten and out-of-date meat has said she did not report illegal practices out of ‘fear’. The staff member, whose job was to distribute the meat around the island, admitted she knew that much of the meat was months, even years, out of date. Three men have been arrested in Marratxi after salmonella-infected meat was sold around the island, including to Michelin star restaurants. Police were alerted after a customer complained about the quality of meat, that also included salmon and squid, purchased. As the Olive Press reported in March, police discovered 30,000 kilos of expired frozen meat in a processing facility which has now been shut down - set for sale to the public. The group have been charged for crimes against public health as well as forgery after allegedly changing and falsifying expiry dates. They also deny they failed to pay employees for extra hours worked and that workers were given adequate holiday. Under the Grill, p27

OPINION Tourism trouble WE are on the cusp of what is certain to be another busy tourism season in Mallorca. Last year a record number of people visited the island - an incredible 13.8 million; even more impressive when you consider that the population of Mallorca itself is just over one million. It is evident that the sheer number of visitors is putting a strain on life in Mallorca - from service provision to drunk and disorderly behaviour in public. The Balearic government this week has moved to cut back on allowing homeowners to rent their properties to tourists. This move led to outspoken criticism from the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who accused the islands of making a dramatic situation out of nothing. Evidently, this is not a ‘nothing’ problem, with a variety of politicians and civil groups speaking out that numbers need to be better controlled. Improved dialogue is needed between the Spanish government in Madrid, the local authorities in Mallorca and resident groups on the island. While Rajoy may view moves to limit numbers in an economic sense, Mallorquins look at it more from a social sense and the two parties must meet in the middle. Mallorca cannot afford to lose its tourism industry but making this more sustainable by attracting visitors equally around the entire year and diversifying the economy, the future certainly looks brighter on the Balearics.

Dropping anchor Anticipation has reached fever pitch ahead of the 2018 Palma Superyacht Show - Europe’s largest festival of its nature with 80 yachts on display, writes Joe Wallen The Superyacht Show has now become THE show to attend to see the largest collection of performance sailboats which is a unique accolade,” says Roger Horner, the Managing Director of e3, a maritime communications company. “This year the expansion of the show to encompass the whole port basin is fantastic so that a circular walk can take you around the whole event.” Now in its sixth year, the Palma Superyacht Show continues to go from strength to strength, with 19% more visitors expected in 2018 than 2016. A record number of 80 superyachts
BUSTLING: Thousands come to visit the boat show each year
Palma has a growing reputation as a global yachting hub will be on display - all spectacularly bigger than 24m, the length of six 4x4s - and 85 yachting exhibitors will showcase their services to the wider industry. Confirmed to be in attendance this year is the 40m sailing yacht Rainbow, one of the illustrious J-Class yachts. Built to the hull lines of the original 1934 America’s Cup winner, the yacht is not one to miss given its stunning combination of classic design with state-of-the-art technology. There truly is something for every yachting fanatic, with Wanted, a 32m modern-styled motor yacht for sale as part of Camper & Nicholsons International’s portfolio. The show sets sail on April 27 with the boats and exhibitors available to view from 11am in the morning until 8pm in the evening. After a thirsty day’s work in Moll Vell, visitors and industry participants alike have been invited to an opening evening of fun at Port Tarraco. An extended happy hour is on offer between 6.308pm, allowing time to catch up with friends

and also make new business connections over a glass of champagne. The opening times of the show will remain from 11-8pm until May 1 when the show ends, although there are extended hours until 11pm on Saturday, April 28. Not resting on their laurels from last year’s successful event, organisers have brought in the construction of a new floating bridge to allow for more viewing space of the boats. It is thought
the new floating bridge, which also allows for a complete circular viewing experience of the yachts, has allowed for 16 further stands alone. One of the major success stories from last year was the opening of a specialised Refit and Repair centre where sailing fanatics could take advantage of the presence of over 600 captains and their crew when looking for expert advice on how to refurbish their luxury vessels. Given the popularity of this section last year, 25% more stands have been made available ensuring even more fascinating presentations and discussions will take place. For many attendees, Palma’s growing reputation as a global yachting hub and ability

Songs of freedom OVER 30 artists and performers have signed up for Palma's 'Freedom of Expression' concert in support of convicted rap artist Valtonyc. The Association of Creators and Artists for Artistic Freedom has organised the June 17 event, in response to Mallorcan rapper Josep Miquel Arenas, aka Valtonyc, being sentenced to three and a half years in prison for glorifying terrorism and serious insults and threats to the crown. Artists from all across Spain will be performing at the Palma Arena, including Boikot from Madrid, Sevilla's hip hop rapper, Tote King, and the famous Albert Pla from Catalonia.

HE’S being called ‘The Mallorcan Banksy’ – and it’s not hard to see why. From multi-storey murals on skyscraper buildings to whimsical paintings of kids and pigs, talented local artist Joan Aguilo is bringing joy and colour to the island’s beige corners. The 34-year-old may not be anonymous like Banksy, but the two artists have plenty in common, not least their monumental murals conveying strong and simple messages. A child making a statement on a stack of books, a toddler playing with trains above a railway station or political figures standing proudly in their districts – any of these could be the work of the world’s most famous street artist.
ART ATTACK: Murals around Mallorca
But instead they are by Mallorca’s very own. And he is not just fixed on the island… Aguilo, who has an art degree from Barcelona university, has recently been commissioned to paint murals in Lübeck, London and Berlin, as well as a refugee camp in Beirut and in Anantapur, India. His most recent works
include a new mural of a baby in a bath on Palma’s Calle Blanquerna for international Women’s Day this year he painted a massive mural in Inca of a young girl clutching a chemistry flask. Aguilo, who has lived in Berlin and Mexico City, now runs the annual Saladina Art Fest in Can Picafort every autumn.
Banking on Banksy RESIDENTS of a small town in Spain have woken up to what they believe is the country’s first Banksy. The wall in Ferrol de Coruña, Galicia, has received the graffiti treatment in the style of the British artist in a space that has been reserved for him for years. The piece shows two Guardia Civil officers kissing and appears to have been signed off
by the world famous enigma, whose work sells for millions of euros at auction. It comes after the town reserved the space pleading for Banksy to use it for a new piece. Their wishes appear to have come true, and if confirmed by Banksy, it would be the first of its kind in Spain, after one found in San Sebastian was erased after not getting confirmation of its authorship.

Coffee for kids CAKE, coffee and hand-crafted goods await at Palmanova's annual Feed a Child charity event hosted by a group of local expats. There will also be a market with crafts, jewellery, and second-hand books, as well as a raffle drawing. Rainbow retreat A MALLORCAN villa is being touted as this summer’s must have property due to its intricate use of glass. The expansive ‘Villa Chameleon’ in opulent Son Vida, near Palma, was identified as one of the world’s top five exclusive abodes by the Financial Times. Valued at an eye-watering €29.5m, it has gained its nickname as more than half of the building is made of a special crystal glass which contains LED lighting, allowing the house to change colour. The luxurious development contains ten bedrooms, a guesthouse and its own ‘wellness centre’ for when all that sunbathing gets too much. It is being sold at www.engelvoelkers.com.
Island dynamo T Foreign buyers continue to pour into Mallorca, while Brits make up the biggest foreign market in Spain, writes Gillian Keller
Boom at a price
HE Balearics were the most popular region for foreign buyers last year, new figures have revealed. More than 460,000 sales were registered in Spain last year, with foreign nationals accounting for 13% of purchases. The total number of properties bought last year was the highest number since 2008’s
MALLORCA is enjoying a mini property boom this year, despite a shortage of developable land, according to the Association of Surveyors and Architects. Planning permission has been awarded to over 400 properties in the first quarter of the year, more than any time in the last few years. Significantly there has also been a change in the type of proper-

However, Association President Daniel Tur has warned that more must be done to ensure that the boom benefits all Malloquins. Tur explained that the price of land on the island was still high
And now, as a result of Spain’s booming property market, the International Monetary Fund has raised the country’s economic growth forecast in 2018 to 2.08% - giving Spain the strongest economic growth in the Eurozone. Things are looking up for the Spanish property market, with an increase in sales, writes Mark Stucklin of Property Spanish Insight
T
he number of Spanish home sales inscribed in the Land Registry was up by 18% in February compared to the same month last year, the biggest February increase since the boom years more than a decade ago. There were 37,412 Spanish home sales inscribed in the Land Register in February, and 41,480 if you include homes subsidised by the Government, known as VPO, all according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), based on sales inscribed in the Land Registry. Home sales have grown by double digits in most months since March 2014, when the Spanish housing market recovery started. That said, sales are still down by 44% compared to the peak year of 2007. Sales in the boom years were exaggerated and unsustainable, so not a normal benchmark, but there still looks like room for more growth. Bear in mind these figures are based on sales inscribed in the Land Register, not sales completed in the month. As such they lag the market by a few months. More timely figures from the Association
ON A ROLL: Spain’s property market is seeing sale numbers near pre-crisis levels

of Spanish Notaries for home sales that took place in February were up 2.7%. New home and resale transactions were up 17% and 16% respectively in February, showing that the recover is now firing on both pistons, having relied almost exclusively on resales between the start of the recovery in 2013 and May last year. New home sales have increased
by double digits almost every month for the last year, driven by the recovery in demand for new homes in Spain. Looking at the evolution of sales by region with a focus on areas that attract foreign buyers in significant numbers, year to date sales have increased strongly almost everywhere except Extremadura (where foreign demand is
not a big part of the picture) and Catalonia, where the constitutional crisis and political uncertainty are discouraging foreign buyers. Sales were up 59% in Castellón province, home to the Costa del Azahar, in what looks like the first signs of recovery in a coastal market that has suffered the crisis longer and harder than most.
The overall picture is one of surging sales in most areas of Spain that attract foreigners in significant numbers, with the exception of the Catalan provinces of Barcelona, Girona, and Tarragona. But even in those regions sales were positive, despite the political turbulence. www.spanishpropertyinsight.com

In come the big guns SIR Richard Branson is one step closer to opening the ‘best ecoresort in Europe’ after hiring former general manager of La Residencia, Marie Aastrup Duffy. Branson re-purchased the 4,000 acre Son Bunyola estate in Banyalbufar in 2015 and is planning to construct an opulent five-star complex on the land. Duffy is expected to bring her expertise to the project after managing the luxury spa hotel La Residencia, in nearby Deia, for years.

LAM Rock queen Suzi Quatro, has named Mallorca as her favourite holiday destination. Quatro, who has sold more than 55 million records in an illustrious career spanning over five decades, owns a home in the seaside village of Bendinat. She purchased the twobedroom apartment with her husband Rainer Haas in 2003 and has never looked back. “We get to relax, go to restaurants and shop – it’s a place to unwind,” she has revealed. “I fell in love with it the first time I visited. “I like the pace of it – that you could be loud at the disco and quiet at the beach.”
Rest ‘n’ Relaxation Suzi’s sunshine getaway lies in the luxurious estate of Sa Vinya, adjacent to the 18-hole Real Golf de Bendinat course. The rocker isn’t the only ce-
lebrity fan of beautiful Bendinat and she counts Peter Stringfellow and formerly Jamie and Louise Redknapp among her neighbours.
She admitted that her lack of enthusiasm for cooking has led to a passion for nearby restaurants, in particular Japanese Tahini in nearby Portals. “It’s fabulous, we visit around four times a year,” she said. “The main things we love are the peace and the weather. Mallorca’s very pretty and peaceful and it’s always felt safe to me.” Quatro famously played at Brian Robertson’s last gig with Thin Lizzy in Ibiza in 1978 and has confirmed that she would ‘love to do another gig’ in the Balearics.
Vegan delight
A VEGAN hotel has opened in Mallorca. The Ecocirer Art Hotel, in Soller, is the first vegan-style bed and breakfast in the Balearics. Located in the heart of the old town, the intimate family-run hotel has been redesigned and redecorated with the environment and sustainability as top priority. “Ecocirer is committed to the conservation of our earth, allowing you to explore the beautiful Tramuntana region, its flora and fauna,” said owner Barbara Martí, who is the daughter of well-known Mallorcan artist Francesca Martí. Barbara, who is writing a vegan cookbook, and her husband Martin, from Holland, have turned the house from the 1900s into a stunning six-bedroom hotel. The days starts with a ‘plant-based’ breakfast created by chef Barbara from delights grown in the estate's gardens, along with seasonal treats from the local market. Everything inside the hotel, with the exception of the beds, is recycled through restoration and creativity. Colourful chairs and tables have been recovered and given a new life, along with lighting fixtures and decorations.
Rustic and high-quality teak tables – Also round and in all strengths
Looking for a loophole MALLORCA’S most controversial rural development has come under the spotlight. The 21-home scheme Petit Deia has been sent for an official check up. The Counsell de Mallorca is reviewing the license granted by Deia town hall, and has confirmed it will intervene if it finds any breaches in law. It comes after various complaints about the development were reported in the media, including the Olive Press. Local green groups argue that its licence should be null and void as it was granted in 2007, when planning laws had not been updated since 1992. It has not stopped Mar Capital starting to prepare the land for the project, even though rural planning laws are far more restrictive these days. “Despite developers already starting construction it is not too late to prevent it being built and causing problems in the future as we have had in Llucalcari, Ses Covetes in Campos, and the apartments of Cala Llamp, in Andratx,” claimed a spokesman for political party GOB in a statement.

Going M global
The island’s architectural maestros making an impact around the world
ALLORCAN architects have been impressing both at home and abroad. Most recently, studio OHLAB was labelled as one of the ‘most important emerging architects in Europe’. It comes after its renovation of the Purohotel Palma and the offices of the Relojeria Alemana in Carrer Colon. Meanwhile, OIB Architecture has created Mallorca marvels like Portals Hills hotel and the retreat hotel Cal Reiet.
Award winners GRAS Reynes Arquitectos have also won over critics, with their Tennis Terrace project in Santa Ponsa and the contemporary house Kubik Extension. Duch Piza and CMV Architects have also been attracting global attention for their respective Es Princep hotel in Palma and the Casa London in Llucmajor. Below we have rounded up the best projects on the island by these up and coming architects.
Kubik Extension GRAS extended a traditional detached house in Mallorca by adding a series of contrasting Corten steel boxes. The existing white-painted building was left intact, with the extensions joined to external walls or added to gaps between the structures. The steel volumes contain new facilities including an indoor pool, spa and game room, while a roof deck provides additional outdoor space with views of the nearby bay.
Son Julia Son Julia is a beautiful 15th century mansion. It has 150,000 square meters of farm and is surrounded by almond, fig and olive trees. The hotel opened its doors in 2006 and, apart from its magnificent rooms, it offers exquisite gourmet cuisine in its two restaurants, a Spa, wellness therapies and large spaces for holding events. The cuisine of the Restaurant Son Julia is directed by the excellent and renowned Chef Jordi Calvache. In summer you can also enjoy an alfresco dinner in the casual restaurant next to the pool.

CMV Architects said: “The house is located in Sa Torre housing development, in a plot of land next to the cliff. The client, a well-known English writer, has raised an extensive program to fulfill the needs of each of the members of the family. “The infinite sights on the sea have been the basic premise of the project. Mallorca is cracking down on tourist rentals this summer
P

Locked out
ALMA will become the first Spanish city to ban short-term tourist rentals. The legislation aims to combat mass tourism on the island which has led to overcrowding and soaring rental costs for locals. During 2015 and 2017, the number of
unregistered short-let apartments on the island grew 50% to reach 20,000. Out of the 20,000 available, only 645 properties were found to have the correct licences. “Palma has always been a bold and diverse city,” said Mayor Antoni Noguera. “We believe it will set a
trend in other cities when they see that finding a balance is key.” According to the proposed new law, which is set to come in this July, only detached, single-family homes will be available as tourist rentals. There will be a complete ban on apartments in blocks of flats. Family homes will be banned from renting if they sit on protected rural land, or are near the airport or in non-residential areas. In Palma there are roughly 180,000 homes, of which 23,000 are single-family and therefore potentially unaffected by the new law. “There is a parallel between the evolution of vacation rentals and the rise in rental prices,” said Jose Hila, the former mayor of Palma. “This decision is meant to protect residents as tourist accommodation affects the makeup of buildings and neighbourhoods and it also affects social harmony.” reveal that 70% of visiThe island’s Ombudsman tors last summer were has seen a steep rise in the families or adult counumber of complaints filed ples. While the agency believes that debt as a percentage of GDP will sit at 96.7% by the end of 2018, in line with the Government’s forecast, it estimates that its reduction will be extremely slow to the point that in 2023 it will still be at 90.9%
of GDP. In fact, according to the data in the report, Spain will not comply with the objective set in the stability law of reducing debt to 60% of GDP by 2020, since in that year it will stand at 90%. The AIReF has called for the Government to adopt a realistic objective. The tax authority estimates that this level of debt (60%) will not be reached until 2035.

SPANIARDS are travelling more and spending billions while doing it. New figures released by the National Institute of Statistics have revealed the Spanish took 6.5% more holidays or trips in 2017 than the year before. Half of the 193 million trips taken last year were holidays, with Spaniards spending €44.2 billion, 6.9% higher year-on-year. Some 91.1% of the trips were within Spain. Most travellers visited Andalucia, with the sunny region attracting 16.8% of all trips made by Spaniards last year. This was followed by Catalunya, with 13%, and the Valencian Community, with 9.6%.

Amazon accused of victimizing workers who went on strike last month
AIRBNB hosts earned on average €7,000 in 2017 from renting out rooms or flats for an average of two months in Palma. The city hosted over 220,000 visitors through the popular site, from 147 countries last year alone. Airbnb hosts in Ibiza made an average of over €10,500 for 49 nights last year, with only 100,000 visitors using the popular vacation rental website. Balearic Airbnb hosts make a lot more cash from rentals than most of Spain, where the average host makes a mere €3,572 for 38 days of renting. The website has announced that it is opening an office of sustainable tourism, to ensure they empower cities rather than overcrowd and cause economic stress to an area.
UNIONS in Spain have accused Amazon of firing more than 100 workers because they went on strike for better working conditions. The CGT union condemned the US company’s largest logistic centre in Spain and said the move to not renew the temporary workers’ contracts was politically motivated. Workers first went on strike on March 21 and 22, but some turned up to work out of fear of reprisals. Now, just days before the next strike, more than 100 employees at the San Fernando de Henares centre, near Madrid, have been let go. Employees have also complained that the company usually gives an early notice when there's going to be lay-
just under €200,000 - an unnecessary expense for taxpayers. One walkway alone had nearly 150 tons of concrete and bags or rubble illegally abandoned, left for the island to deal with.
Strike reprisals offs, but that this time ‘silence reigned.’ “Not Friday night, not Saturday, neither Sunday: it's been this morning (Monday). The Whatsapp groups are on fire because our colleagues have been confirming their dismissals,” one worker said. In its defense, the e-commerce firm said it hires tem-

porary workers to handle high demand seasons, and then turn their contracts into permanent ones if possible. “Precisely due to this seasonal nature, it's not possible to turn all contracts into indefinite ones. “Since the beginning of our operations in Spain, we have turned hundreds of temporary contracts into permanent ones,” said a spokesperson, adding that the mass firing happened due to a drop in demand.
But workers that have been in the company for a while argue that such layoffs are unusual for this time of year, dismissing Amazon’s ‘excuses’. The employees claimed the company is trying to cheapen labour, eliminate guarantees for a salary increase and get rid of protection clauses in case of temporary disability. Workers are now planning strikes on the company’s busiest days, including Black Friday.
Free of charge THE FOUR brothers who run Alcudia's Aguas Channeled water company have been absolved of tax crimes after paying more than €3 million in taxes, interest and penalties. The company owed €2.6 million in taxes, and the prosecution on the case originally asked for ten years in prison for each of the men. The brothers have been able to prove that although they now run the company, the violations were from 2009 to 2013 when their father was in charge. He has since died. They also have paid the government all the money owed, leaving courts to drop the charges.
Supermarket plastics GREENPEACE volunteers have stopped by a local Mercadona grocery store in Palma to denounce the over-use of plastics in packaging and to raise awareness among neighbours. The act was just one of many that took place in 26 Spanish cities at large supermarkets including Carrefour and Eroski. Volunteers encouraged shoppers to check their bags, and get rid of extra plastic packaging – advising them to leave it at the shop instead.

YOUR LEGAL PROBLEMS ADDRESSED BY ANTONIO FLORES
Tenants and occupants could face jail for theft and damage
A
RECENT writ by a Murcia-based prosecutor is a stark reminder that certain illegal practices by toxic tenants, and other occupants of real estate, will not enjoy impunity. The writ refers to a non-paying tenant who -in the middle of an eviction process- chose to retaliate against the landlord by stealing, among other items, 2 fans, a mattress, a washing machine, a dishwasher, hobs, curtains, a coffee machine, a microwave oven, a table and four chairs.
causing financial and emotional harm to the owner’, according to the sentencing Judge.
Maximum
In Barcelona, the Appeal Court (Section 10) handed a prison term to a tenant who, with the intention of causing the maximum possible damage, knocked walls, pulled pipes and cables, broke shutters and tore curtains and generally left the property in a lamentable state of despair. It’s worth noting that in all the rulings, the actions caused by the tenant show a deliberate and intentional desire to cause monetary loss to the owner. If the above scenarios want to be avoided by both tenants and owners, it is highly recommendable that parties carefully examine the property to be rented and draw up an inventory (photographic or video if possible) before granting possession.
Prison
The State Prosecutor is asking that the tenant serves a minimum of 2 years in prison as the value of items stolen exceeds 400 euros. In a similar case, Criminal Court 15 in Valencia has imposed a 14-month prison sentence to a tenant for misappropriating furniture items and a 3,000 fine for causing damage to various other items of furniture, consequence of ‘a deep resentment and a direct intention of

Wine time With Aleesha Hansel
P Cava
Traditionally made with three white grapes, rosado cava will usually have Garnacha and Monastrell in the mix. Garnacha, also known as Grenache, brings strawberry and raspberry characteristics while Monastrell, aka Mourvedre, gives the wine a perfect pink hue. Cava, originating from the latin word for cave, refers to how the wine used to be preserved and aged. Made in the same way as Champagne, cava is typically dry - unless semi seco is stated on the label. Great with seafood dishes such as grilled prawns and langoustines but equally at home with charcuterie or fruit salad.
INK wine, known as rosé in France and rosado in Spain, has a somewhat mixed reputation. Seen as a bit of an inbetween, it has struggled to cement its position within the market, but with its surprising versatility it is definitely worthy of a try. The history of pink wine is not so clear cut. Many of the earliest red wines made would have been closer in colour to modern rosado than a Rioja. Recent winemaking techniques have allowed us to produce darker and more tannic wines, due to extended maceration and harder pressing not widely practiced in ancient winemaking. Both red and white grapes were pressed soon after harvest and often by hand or feet meaning little contact time with the grape skins leaving wines only lightly pigmented. While documents have been found going as far back at 1764 showing the sale of rosé Champagne by Ruinart - the oldest Champagne house - the story of the pink drink took a dra-

Navarra DO, north of Rioja is the most noted rose region with more than half of area’s wine production dedicated to rosados. Grape varieties used in the production of reds and rosados represent 95% of the all vines planted in the DO, although this number is starting to decrease for more white varieties. Traditionally rosados from this area are made with Garnacha,

There are currently 32,000 hectares making rose under vine within the Jumilla DO, 45% of which are in Murcia and 55% in Albacete. While relatively unknown, the region is one of Spain’s oldest DO or Denominación de Origen, which indicates the geographical origin and the style of a wine and dictates various production conditions, having been granted in 1966. Monastrell is the most significant variety making up more than 85% of the vines planted. Expect a raspberry and cherry nose with enough weight and structure to match with light meats, rice and pasta.

Feather in their cap!
It’s a century since the Caporale family opened their first restaurant… hence the name of their new joint Enoteca 1918, writes Jon Clarke

00 YEARS is a long time in the restaurant trade. And so it is a massive achievement that the Caporale family have been catering for a century. The hard-working Italian clan, who have been on the island for nearly two decades, have just opened their third restaurant in Palma. And it is truly bottoms up, with their new joint, specialising in the best Spanish and Italian wines and some amazing classic home-cooked Italian treats. Appropriately named Enoteca 1918 in honour of the year their family opened their first restaurant in Italy, it is a stylish,
JAMON IBERICO: Must try buzzy place in the heart of Palma’s food central, Santa Catalina. As well as excellent vinos by the glass, serious wine buffs can splash out on a series of amazing ‘super-Tuscans’ and top Barolos, some costing nearly €1,000 a bottle. There are even a few French chestnuts, including the odd second growth Bordeaux and some splendid champagnes.
Food-wise let the team guide you, but I tried some wonderful oysters, braised sep mushrooms, with parsley and delicious seafood croquettes. You should also have a plate of the amazing jamon Iberico. The family’s first restaurant, Francavilla al Mare, opened in the Abruzzo town of Pescara in 1918. “It was also a hotel run by my great grandfather Don Donato and was a wonderful spot,” explains manager Manuel Caporale. The family upped sticks to Mallorca in the late 1990s and opened their first restaurant Via Appia in Calle Fabrica in 2000. A true family affair, it still serves up some of the best pizzas and pasta in the city. Their new joint across the road is something of a departure, much more upmarket and refined, but with the same core family members in the mix. “That is my Mamma, Tiziana di Tonto, and Papa, Michele Caporale, a well as chef Fabio Galasso,” continues Manuel. He is also helped by knowledgeable sommelier Micaela Fusco, who recently joined the team having trained in London for a few years.

ELL I hope you all wished me luck with the recent London Marathon. I was hoping to beat last year’s time of 3 hours 29 minutes (at which point I switched the TV off and had lunch). I really love to watch it and find it completely mesmerising, sadly taking part is never going to be an option. Come on now, I can’t even run to my car these days so absolutely no chance of a long distance effort, it would literally kill me. An old school friend of mine has run it many times so she must have had my turn. Well while on the subject of mortality I had the sad duty of attending a cremation the other day. Well, when I say attend that’s not what actually ended up happening. I hope none of you are experienced funeral goers wherever you are but for me and my partner this was a Spanish first. It was someone close and the family wanted to give them a big send off. Funerals happen really quickly here, unlike the long torturous wait you get back in blighty. People had literally dropped everything and jumped onto planes to make it in time. This wasn’t helped by the fact that it started at 8.30 in the morning. We duly went along and anyone who wanted to view the body at this point went into a little room where it was laid out. Only a couple of us did so we told the attendant that viewing was over and looked for the where the service was to be. Well we looked and looked but could see nothing happening anywhere, except that is for a small stream of smoke…… Yes due to our inexperience in these situations no one knew that it was down to us to book a vicar or priest, organise a service and choose music etc. What a fiasco, we were all left in the car park watching the smoke of our loved one being gently blown away on the breeze. The apologetic attendant gave a sympathetic shrug and disappeared inside. There we all were, dressed up and festooned with appropriate flowers, speechless and feeling incredibly stupid. At this point we all went back to someone’s

Funeral planners house for tea and cakes and basically a good laugh about it. What else could we do? This has set me thinking about the whole ‘paying your respects’ thing. As I say people were very good and came racing over as soon as they knew and in this instance really had a wasted journey. Now none of us know when our time is coming and it seems a shame that people make all that effort after you’ve actually gone when you therefore
know nothing about it. Let me say for the record to anyone who knows me, please take the trouble to come and see me now, whilst I’m still here! Here’s something a bit spooky though, the ashes were later collected and duly dispatched with all the appropriate ceremony missing from the cremation. As there seemed no point in keeping the rather unattractive urn once it had been emptied it was

thrown into the closest public bin. The next day, the daughter of the late departed was walking her dog who insisted on pulling her away from their usual route and down a road she never uses. There on a wall was the self same urn. I kid you not. Make of that what you will. The other point I would make here is that apart from the complete disaster that was the non-funeral, everything else was made extremely easy because there was a proper will and they’d discussed what they wanted to happen. If you haven’t done yours then it’s a must, without one you leave confusion and unnecessary expense. I know the old adage ‘Where there’s a will there’s a relation’ but where there isn’t a will there’s expensive chaos. Sorry, I’m starting to nag you all again and risk sound like a daytime TV advert aren’t I? Well on that note I wish you a long, happy and healthy life, it’s not a rehearsal, get out there and live it.

Dead weight SPAIN has been stripped of its right to host the 2018 European junior weightlifting championships because it refuses to recognise Kosovo as an independent state. It comes after, during a European Weightlifting Federation (EWF) Executive Board meeting, the continental weightlifting governing body stated that Spain must provide a sufficient guarantee that Kosovo team members would be granted visas to take part in the tournament. Head of the EWF Antonio Urso gave the Spanish government and sports ministries three weeks to resolve the issue and ensure equal treatment for all the competitors despite political controversies. They failed to reply within the time limit, leading the board to grant the hosting rights to Poland instead. Spain is reluctant to recognise Kosovo given the independence drive for one of its own territories, Catalunya.
