‘Frail’ elderly expat faces eviction at 80 from her hotel home of 13 years to cash in on tourism EXCLUSIVE By Laura Duckett

Brit Catherine McDonald, who is almost 80, must leave Hotel Monarque Fuengirola Park by the end of this month or pay a further €2800 for the summer. The 67-year-old, from Guildford, spent €200 over the regular price to find there was nothing exclusive about the package, apart from being closer to the stage at Fuengirola’s Marenostrum Music Castle Park. “I was so disappointed,” said Brown. “I ended up sitting on the floor and with the arthritis in my knee it was pretty uncomfortable. “Considering the age of people coming to watch someone like Sting, you would think organisers would provide seating.” The Olive Press was unable to speak to the promoters as we went to

She said ‘oh no, I wouldn’t want to demand that of them.’ “I just think it’s a terrible thing to do to someone who has made her home there.” The Olive Press approached Hotel Monarque Fuengirola Park on several occasions, but failed to get a response before we went to print. A CROOKED Costa del Sol mayor has been finally sentenced to eight years in prison. Ex-leader of Casares Juan Sanchez has been found guilty of taking bribes from eastern European gangsters after a long police investigation. The former IU chief is joined by architect Rafael Duarte and crime figure Armenian Frank Robert Mani over the Majestic corruption scandal. He has been found guilty of fraud, money laundering and prevarication over taking at least 282,000 euros to help launder money in an illegal urbanisation promoted by Mani and various gangster partners. The demand came when hotel bosses allegedly decided to turn her room into a family room over the busy summer season to make more money. They have allegedly told her she can return in winter when demand decreases. “She has paid the price of a decent sized flat to live in this room all these years and this is how they treat her,” continued Martin. “She is really upset that all of the money she has put in for more than a decade doesn’t count for anything.” When McDonald moved to the Costa del Sol, her brother, now deceased, set up a trust fund for her and set her up in the hotel. TWO Brits who fled to Mallorca after being charged with prostituting their own daughters have been arrested in Cartama, near Malaga. Aged 54 and 59, the married couple had offered sexual relations with their daughter to a man back in 2009. They were convicted of sexual abuse of a minor in 2016, but then fled to Mallorca in a desperate attempt to avoid police. From Mallorca, they moved to a shack on a farm in Cartama (left), where they have now been found and arrested. The pair will now face prison.

A GROUP of tourists have been robbed by a gang of Looky Looky men on the Costa del Sol. The students, celebrating the end of their A-levels, were beaten up before having their iPhones, watches and money stolen in Benalmadena. James Kelly, 18, and three of his pals, were walking between bars at 2am when the gang struck. They had only just arrived for their first Spanish holiday a few hours earlier. “They attacked us from behind,” said Kelly, who is set to study at Liverpool University this September. “We tried to fight back but they overpowered us, luckily there was a witness who saw the whole thing, and helped to scare them off and called police.” “The whole thing has been pretty devastating,” added the student, from Kenilworth Sixth Form Academy, in Worcestershire.

THREE women have been killed by their partners in just one day. It comes as figures showed a shocking 47% increase in domestic murders this year. The incidents, which occurred in Madrid and Murcia, led to the arrest of two of men while the third in Murcia took his own life. None of the victims had reported any mistreatment by their spouses previously. Their deaths bring the number of domestic abuse-related murders in Spain this year to 27 - nine more than last year. Andalucia had 6,913 victims of abuse last year, which represents one out of every 500 women, the highest number in Spain.
The four thieves stole thousands of euros worth of goods, including two iPhones, an Emporio Armani watch and 200 euros in cash. They also took a passport. “Police told us they are part of a gang of Looky Looky men, who they are aware of and have now arrested,” added Kelly. “They told us they sell goods along the beach by day.” Kelly’s grandfather Michael, who let the group stay in his apartment, told the Olive Press: “I am shocked at the lack of police activity around such a well known nightlife area. “It seems youngsters can’t have a night out in relative safety. “What message does this send for the safety of any tourist coming to Malaga?” Police declined to comment as we went to press.

BRITAIN’S most-wanted fugitive has evaded cops again, this time in Geneva. Mark Acklom, who was thought to be hiding in Spain, was spotted at a cafe in the Swiss capital, but by the time the police arrived he had vanished. Acklom, 45, was last tracked down to Murcia by the Olive Press, where we discovered his wife runs a property business. He is wanted by UK police for allegedly defrauding fiancee Carolyn Woods of all her €960,000 (£850,000) life savings in Gloucestershire four years ago. The National Crime Agency is now investigating the sighting. Alleged victim Woods said: “I’m not really surprised that he’s sitting openly in public because he is supremely arrogant and probably feels invincible - not surprising bearing in mind he has slipped through the net so easily on numerous occasions before.”
A BRITISH family has been found guilty of scamming €51 million from UK taxpayers to fund their luxury lifestyle in Spain. Geoffrey Copp, 56, his brother Andrew, 50, and his son Joshua, 24, enjoyed ‘high living on a grand scale’ thanks to their elaborate VAT scam. Dad Geoffrey, who owns four mansions in the UK, also bought a huge villa on the Costa del Sol, where he spent much of the year. They spent a total of €340,000 on private flights to Malaga in just six months and owned three Bentleys. His brother Andrew meanwhile owned eight homes, six mortgage-free, including one in Malaga. His car collection, including Lamborghinis, was valued at €1.5 million. Son Joshua spent thousands on Rolex and Piguet watches and splurged an incredible €150,000 in London’s Selfridges in one day. Their business Central Payroll Specialists worked with recruitment companies and issued invoices to customers with 20% VAT applied. Meanwhile, they declared sales amounting to just under €23 million, when it was actually more than €285 million. They also kept the VAT due. The trio have been found guilty of conspiracy to cheat the public revenue and money laundering and will be sentenced at a later date.

The scheme saw money laundered into the Majestic development via radio and TV stations and the Mijas hippodrome race track. The Olive Press first probed the links of Casares town hall with Polish mob boss Ricardo Fanchini and his cohorts Mani and Robert Gaspar in building on non-development land near the coast, nearly a decade ago. We revealed how the group were laundering money via a series of pop concerts, including Jamiroquai and UB40, and were linked to REM radio station, which later changed its name to Talk Radio Europe. Fanchini, who was described as the ‘CEO of organised crime in Europe’ by the BBC, is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for racketeering in the US. Eight other town hall workers who were facing prison have been acquitted after claiming they were unaware of the illegality of the documents they signed. Architect Duarte has been fined €18,000.

A campaigning, community newspaper, the Olive Press represents the huge expatriate community in Spain with an estimated readership, including the websites, of more than 500,000 people a month.
OPINION
Another one bites the dust For over a decade the Olive Press has been reporting on bent mayors like Juan Sanchez in Casares. While most newspapers chose to ignore the corruption and bribery that went on during this time, we have continually pointed out and probed their misdoings. Even the Spanish press largely turned a blind eye to the Junta’s huge ERE scandal at first, not to mention Tarifa’s barmy Valdevaqueros project, or the corruption that saw Ronda town hall almost get away with licensing a 2000-home golf development on UNESCO protected land. Indeed, it was only after our story got picked up by the UK national press, that the Spanish newspapers duly followed up the case, leading to something to be done. As long ago as 2012, we even turned our whole front page over to the national Gurtel scandal enveloping Prime Minister Rajoy under the headline: ‘Who will now cut out the cancer destroying Spain?’ So it is great to see the courts finally catching up with the likes of Sanchez and his disgraceful get rich quick scheme... although eight years in prison is not enough. The likes of Transparency International shining a light on town halls around Spain is certainly helping bring about change, albeit slowly. So it is worrying to say the least, to discover some town halls like Mijas are actually going backwards. And particularly under the umbrella of the Ciudadanos party, which is supposed to be fighting corruption, not encouraging it.
Have a heart
IT’s truly sad that a loyal customer of a hotel for 13 years is being evicted to make a bit more money. Considering her advanced age, it is remarkable that Fuengirola Park hotel is even contemplating asking Catherine McDonald to leave the home she has been in for over a decade. The fact that she could have bought a house for the money she has paid is entirely ignored. All this for a couple of extra thousands of euros, before letting her back in throughout the winter - the low season - when Costa del Sol hotels need all the custom they can get. The Olive Press prays they reconsider their decision. And if not, shame on you!

T’S 11pm, and Magaluf is grinding into action. On the Strip, scantily clad girls at the City Lights bar gyrate on raised platforms while Irish and British youngsters sink cheap shots and cocktails. Over the years, this Mallorca resort has become a byword for bad behaviour. Its heady brew of sex, drink and violence is manna from heaven for tabloid-headline writers, with a daily onslaught of stories proclaiming the worst excesses of north European youth. In truth, most of the youngsters here are wellbehaved kids, many enjoying their first overseas holiday away without the family and exercising their right to cut-price booze. Two Sex On The Beach cocktails here cost as little as €4.50, two pints just €3. But despite the best intentions of Mallorquins and the local business community, Magaluf is finding it hard to shed its bad-boy-and-girl reputation. “A few lads we know have got a hiding over here,” said Sean, 19, from County Wateford, who is here for a week with a group of seven friends. “One lad went out on his own the other night and 15 English lads attacked him. He got battered with a baseball bat and had to have 12 stitches. He went to the hospital, but was back out again the next night.” It’s a graphic example of the dangers that can befall unsuspecting youngsters in ‘Shagaluf’,

a nickname which needs no further explanation. Just last week, two British youngsters were filmed brutally battering a compatriot at an apartment block in Punta Ballena, setting about him in a sustained, sickening assault that was captured on CCTV. One of the culprits can be seen stabbing the victim with a broken bottle before the duo pummel him to a pulp. The following day, a 19-year-old Brit was left fighting for his life after falling from a third-floor flat, sustaining a broken leg and life-threatening injuries. On Wednesday, an 18-year-old British girl reported an alleged sexual assault to Spanish police as Magaluf’s grim roll call lengthened yet further. The annual ritual of debauchery has spurred locals into action. In June, as reported in our last issue, an updated list of 64 regulations outlawing bad behaviour were issued by Calvia council, the local authorities charged with upholding law and order. The list of misdemeanours are split into three categories. ‘Minor’ offences, such as climbing a tree or shining a laser, are charged at between €100 and €599. ‘Serious crimes’, like defecating in the street, will see miscreants charged from €600 to €1,499. Bar owners serving under-age drinkers can be slapped with a penalty of between €1,500 to €3,000. According to figures supplied by Calvia Town Hall, the first 15 days of June saw 25 complaints filed with the police for outdoor nudity, with one group of 18 drunken tourists fined last month after jumping in the sea totally starkers. But despite this new clampdown, many are yet to discern a meaningful change. “People have had enough of this bad behav-

iour,” said a spokesperson for the head of local business body ACOTUR. “There are important people here that are working hard to change the image of the area. “Thirty or so years ago, this kind of thing didn’t happen. Tour operators like Thomas Cook had guides who showed people what to do, where to go and what not to do. That doesn’t happen now. “People here didn’t expect it to be as bad this year as last year. We have to change attitudes, and tell people. ‘You can’t come here and do whatever you want.’” This week, Mallorca council and government officials sat down with local business and hoteliers to discuss the dilemma of badlybehaved young holidaymakers tarnishing the island’s reputation. Despite the local outrage, Magaluf’s illicit thrills continue to draw boys and girls looking for a good time, with many young Irish choosing to base themselves in nearby Santa Ponca before heading into Magaluf for a night - or day - out. “I got kicked out of my hotel the other day,” said 19-year-old Ray, from Birmingham, as he

But weary Magaluf bar and restaurant owners, many of them long established, have grown tired of the ‘unfair’ amount of negative stories emanating from their area. “If you want to look for bad press, you can find it anywhere,” said Jason Brown, who runs thriving beach-side café Tom Brown’s, a popular local establishment since 1982. “I got attacked in London with a knife. Many local Spaniards have long grown tired of their area being dragged through the mud. “People who come here think they are better than us,” said Isabel Perez, 47, a local supermarket worker for 20 years. “How would you feel if I came to your city and behaved like this? It makes people very angry.” Nevertheless, it seems the overwhelming majority of holidaymakers here are simply out for a good time, and shy away from any hint of trouble. “I hate fighting,” said Tom, a 19-year-old from Donegal on holiday with 13 pals. “I was in Ayia Napa two weeks ago and you were always watching your back. We are staying in Santa Ponca. There are more Irish

LAST HURRAH: Head down on the table and (inset) rubbish left on the streets there.” While the Brits may attract the lion’s share of the bad headlines, Irish youngsters have found themselves on the wrong side of the local press, too. Last week, local online media outlet Cronica Balear posted a video purportedly showing dozens of Irish youngsters dancing in the street at 6.30 am. Which could be dismissed as mere high jinks were it not for the fact many of them were pogoing on top of a car, destroying it in the process.

SPOILS: Money seized
Call it off! MORE than 3,000 people have signed a petition to call off a bullfight. Four representatives of the Campo de Gibraltar antibullfighting movement handed the petition to La Linea town hall showing the growing opposition to the ‘act of animal cruelty’. The fight, due to take place at La Linea’s bullring this Saturday has been opposed by locals as well as people from all over Europe. “We are opposed to the bullfight as we consider it to be an example of extreme animal cruelty. We are not the only ones that share this belief,” Linda Zemmler, a member of the group told the Olive Press. “Together we can bring awareness to as many people as possible,” added Linda, who works in Gibraltar. Pensioner expat arrested over a string of vicious robberies, sexual assaults and a murder By Mason Cox
AN ageing expat - on the run for 20 years - has been picked up in Spain over a string of crimes committed around Europe. The 73-year-old Italian pensioner, who is accused of armed robbery, murder and sexual assault, was arrested at a campsite, where he was staying in a van owned by his Dutch expat girlfriend. Carlo Alberto - who evaded capture by staying on the move, often driving 1000 kilometres a day - was picked up on Gran Canaria this week. The dangerous criminal,

GIBRALTAR will throw the ‘party of a generation’ on National Day in celebration of the Rock’s Britishness. In a clear snub to Spain, the Rock is preparing to host the largest bash in history celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1967 referendum when residents unanimously voted to stay British. The September 10 party, nicknamed ‘please refrain, Spain,’ will see the Rock adorned with Union Jack flags and other British memorabilia.
Elaborate
It will also feature an elaborate classical concert with songs such as Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory played to large crowds. There will also be a rock concert with some of Gibraltar’s biggest bands. It comes after the UK promised Gibraltar that it will never exclude the Rock from Brexit talks, even if it means getting a better deal. This is in spite of the King of Spain’s recent state visit to the UK, in which he brought up the topic of sovereignty,

PATRIOTIC FERVOUR: This year will be even bigger outraging members of the public, not only in Gibraltar, but also in the UK. During his address, King Felipe said he wanted a ‘dialogue’ between Madrid and London, and that the Rock’s future would be decided by two governments – the UK’s and Spain’s, ignoring Gibraltar’s right to autonomy. He said: “I am certain this resolve to overcome our differences will be even greater in the case of Gibraltar and I am confident that, through
the necessary dialogue and effort, our two Governments will be able to work towards arrangements that are acceptable to all involved.” In response, Chief Minister Picardo accused Spain of ignoring Gibraltar’s voice, and said that it should be the most important during talks about its own future. Meanwhile, a small group of locals took to Main Street to protest the King’s visit, reflecting the Rock’s strong resolve to stay British.

www.theolivepress.es MIJAS town hall has been named among the ‘least transparent’ in Spain, in a new study. It comes despite its new mayor working for the country’s socalled anti-corruption party Ciudadanos. The town hall scored a pitiful 45 out of 100 on the index of openness by NGO Transparency International, which uses 80 indicators to analyse municipalities globally. Alarmingly the town has plummeted from 92.5 points in 2014, the biggest drop in Spain and coinciding with the arrival of mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado, of Ciudadanos. Ironically, near neighbours Fuengirola scored 94.4 and Marbella 93.1. Sevilla scored 93.8, while Velez Malaga scored

Cruel response T
EXPAT campaigners have slammed the ‘cruel’ response of the UK government to their Brexit concerns. Members of Brexpats in Spain have told British Ambassador Simon Manley that they are extremely concerned at the lack of information being given to them over the UK’s exit from the EU. The group slammed the lack of information emanating from Westminster on citizens’ rights post-Brexit in particular over healthcare and pensions. “If the government has no information then please say so publicly and some of our unfounded worries might be allayed, especially the pensioners who are already at their wit's end,” the spokesperson said. “I believe that is that is positively cruel. Most of our members are very angry and feel totally overlooked, we deserve answers.” During the meeting, Manley said the UK was ‘hopeful’ an agreement would soon be reached on freedom of movement in the EU. He stated ‘an enormous amount of work was being undertaken behind the scenes’ to safeguard British EU-based citizens’ concerns.

The Authentic
A LACK of energy and leadership in Theresa May’s government has left hopes of a successful Brexit at risk of falling apart ‘like a chocolate orange’, a leading UK government watchdog has warned. Amyas Morse, boss of the National Audit Office, said the government had failed to take a unified approach to talks with the EU. He also revealed that a request to see a ministerial plan for the changes needed to leave the EU had been met with only ‘vague’ assurances. It comes as chief negotiator David Davis was mocked for turning up at a key Brussels meeting this week with no apparent dossier or papers. The almost unprecedented intervention by Morse is likely to put pressure on May to reassess her approach to the negotiations. Morse said that the result could be a series of failures across Whitehall as negotiations unfold. “Can government actually step up in these very difficult circumstances and deliver a unified response?” he asked. “I’m not seeing it yet.”

THE Junta has launched a new initiative to support young people in the countryside. The Agri-Hebe 2020 project aims to prevent a ‘rural exodus’ by establishing entrepreneurial opportunities in the agriculture field. It is hoped that more than 2,000 more young people will move to the countryside by the year 2020 as a result of the scheme. Currently only ten percent of agricultural business owners are under 35.

The report confirmed that the Costa del Sol is the most built up coastal region of Spain, with buildings covering almost 75% of the coastline. It comes down to a number of reasons, including its seafront location and recently completed A-7 autovia which runs from La Jonquera near Barcelona to Algeciras. There are already plans to build 680 properties on the coast of Axarquia, and worryingly, there is pressure to build close to the Guadalhorce river, a nature reserve.
Cars toxic for kids TRAFFIC pollution in cities can stall children's brain development and stop them from reaching their full potential, according to a Spanish study that measured air pollution in 300 classrooms. Researchers involved in the BREATHE project found that the distance to the nearest road significantly influenced the levels of harmful invisible particles in classrooms and ultimately slowed brain growth in children. The project, funded by the EU's European Research Council, examined 3 000 children in 40 different schools across Barcelona and discovered that those that inhaled more air pollution performed worse on computer tests. The harmful effects are due to tiny particles released from vehicles, especially diesel engines. The invisible flecks of carbon are so small that once you breathe them in, they can cross from the lung into the bloodstream and then travel to the brain. "They stimulate immune cells and produce an inflammatory effect at various levels of the brain," explained Professor Jordi Sunyer, lead scientists on the BREATHE project and senior researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, Spain.

“Malaga is extremely saturated; it is a continuous line as far as Cadiz, although so far the eastern area has not been as badly affected until now,” said Greenpeace director Pilar Marcos. There are 11 areas at risk in Andalucia in addition to Malaga, including Torreguadiaro, southern Motril and Roquetas-Aguadulce. Speaking out in frustration for the worsening situation, Marcos said: “We cannot allow the model which has led our country to economic ruin to continue.”

Organisers of the event said: “We had all the procedures and conditions necessary to finish setting up the event, and were ready for the final inspection before opening the doors on July 10. “But at 4pm the day before, we were told we cannot begin the festival until July 17. “We worked to solve this new and unexpected problem and we found zero cooperation on the part of the City Council who just a few months ago was celebrating the idea of the festival.” They added that they have been met with administrative obstacles the whole way. Heritage hot The Olive Press rummages through Andalucia’s treasure trove of worldrecognised UNESCO sites to pull out the gems, by Mason Cox
General Archive of the Indies, Sevilla Priceless manuscripts dating from the days of the illustrious Spanish Empire are housed within this elegant Renaissance-style repository which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Sevilla was made incredibly wealthy by the goods being brought through from the New World and the building was originally commissioned by King Philip II of Spain as a merchants’ exchange. As traders moved out of the city, and after transitioning through many hands, the building became an archive in 1785, bringing documents relating to Spain’s vast New World territories, stretching from Mexico to Florida, under one roof. Containing some 80 million pages of history held in 43,000 volumes which occupy nine kilometers of shelving, the archive is a thing of beauty as well as an unrivalled world resource documenting an era dominated by empires.
Alcazar of Sevilla It’s a royal palace so beautiful, the top floor is still used by Spain’s royal family as their official residence in Sevilla. Originally designed as an oasis for Moorish kings, the architectural style is distinctly mudejar with hectares of gardens and courtyards, thousands of square meters of extravagant buildings embellished with fountains and pools, water being a precious status symbol of the time. Used as a backdrop for many films and TV productions, from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones, there is wow factor at every turn, from the ornate Courtyard of the Maidens to the curious Mercury Pond and its Grotto Gallery backdrop.
The Generalife, Granada Another section of the Alhambra citadel famed for its stunning gardens. Although it looks like the name of a life insurance company on paper, Generalife is Arabic for ‘architect’s garden’ and it was built as a summer palace for the Nasrid rulers between 1302 though 1309. During the 19th century the palace fell into ruin but was rescued in the 20th century and the gardens you see today were created during the reconstruction. Despite this, the Generalife is one of the oldest surviving Moorish gardens in the world.
The Albayzin Ubeda & Baeza, Jaen A tale of two cities in the province of Jaen, separated by 10 kilometres but united in one UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both cities benefited from extensive patronage in the early 16th century, resulting in a treasure trove of Renaissance style palaces and churches which have been preserved ever since. Ubeda’s most outstanding feature is monumental Vázquez de Molina Square, surrounded by imposing palaces, while Baeza chips in with a Gothic Renaissance cathedral, a Romanesque church and a Plateresque town hall among its jewels. The two cities are now also linked by one tourist board promoting the attractions of both.
Brimming with places of historic interest - Wikipedia lists 28 - this beautiful medieval Moorish district of Granada could have popped up from the pages of a fairytale book. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, some of its winding streets are so narrow they are impossible to walk down, let alone drive a car through. One of many interesting facts is that the district used to get its water from 28 wells. Over time, the water pipes broke and although never repaired, their preserved remnants are still visible today.

spots The Alhambra, Granada The Muslim palace and fortress of Granada provokes global adoration for its mind-boggling beauty and splendour. According to legend, it moved the last Moorish ruler to tears when he left it. Originally built as a Roman citadel, it was left to disintegrate until the 13th century when it was reconstructed by the first of the Nasrid kings. Paid homage by countless poets, artists and nobles over centuries, its spectacular dimensions are surreal. Within the palace are numerous buildings, such as the Hall of Ambassadors, Courtyard of the Palace and the Court of the Lions (see below, right). It’s treasures are known even to those who have never visited as it shows up in novels, films, stories and numerous works of art.
Gorham’s Cave Complex Although located in Gibraltar, it’s only a hop across the isthmus joining the Rock to Andalucia to visit this very new UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has only held that honour since last year although it predates all the other sites in this article by millennia. The cave is believed to have been the last refuge of Neanderthals in Europe circa 55,000 years ago. Neanderthal remains, scratches in the rock, pottery and other signs of habitation were found in the limestone cave, making it a hotspot for biologists studying evolution as it embodies much of humanity’s distant past.
City of Cordoba An entire city protected by UNESCO has to be something special, and Cordoba, perhaps most famous for its mosque cathedral bridging two religions, never disappoints. The region was conquered by the Romans in 206 BC and remnants of its past glory can be found everywhere, from its city walls, gates and towers to its beautiful Roman bridge. When the Muslims claimed it in the 8th century they too left their mark, constructing libraries, universities and medical schools which elevated Cordoba into a global centre of learning. While other cities thrived during the Renaissance, Cordoba declined but today it’s back in business as one of the brightest jewels in Spain’s cultural heritage crown.
Granada City Granada, like Cordoba, is so famous it needs little introduction, with the Alhambra Palace and the Royal Chapel among its plethora of heritage gems. Dating back thousands of years, the earliest recording of a population in the region is 5500 BC but it wasn’t until 711 AD, after the Muslim conquest, that the city was established. Architecturally it has something for everyone, from Renaissance to Baroque but its greatest artistic wealth is its Spanish-Islamic art.
Court of the Lions, Granada
Donana National Park Shared by Huelva, Sevilla and Caidz provinces, this natural wetland covers an area of 543 km2, with protected parkland, marshes and sand dunes. In 1969, the World Wildlife Fund purchased this section to protect its abundant fauna and flora and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1994. Unfortunately, the ecosystem is constantly under threat, its water resources drained by agriculture and polluted by industry. But visitors can still enjoy its many natural wonders, including hundreds of species of birds, mammals and reptiles.
One of the highlights of a visit to Granada’s exquisite Alhambra Palace, this Nasrid Dynasty courtyard lies at the heart of the worldfamous Moorish citadel. Built between 1362 and 1391, the centrepiece is a circular fountain guarded by a phalanx of lions, symbolising the vital importance of water at that time. A colonnade of ornate archways with marble floors surround the courtyard in a cloister style typical of ancient Persian and Islamic gardens. Although a place for tourists and aficionados of fine architecture, it is also a space for contemplation that inspired the 14th century poet and statesman Ibn Zamrak to write an ode to its beauty, carved into the fountain’s rim.

Joke justice The diabolical judiciary system in Spain really is like ‘looking at grass grow’ (Expat demands justice after his cars impounded due to a British company being probed over fraud, issue 269). It is the slowest system I've ever heard of. Still not to worry, as the courts close down in August! Richard Taylor, Estepona
Royal fan I prefer the Royal Family over any politician elected or otherwise (Prince Harry to welcome King and Queen of Spain to UK next week in his first ever role in official state visit, online). Just look at America to see what happens when you elect a head of state. Peter Johnson, Zujar
Come together The human race should be drawing together and working to make the world a better sustainable place, but we seem intent on putting up barriers between ourselves and it is usually due to greed (Catalonia promises it will leave Spain in TWO DAYS if voters back independence in upcoming referendum, online) . Catalonia doesn't want to support the poorer regions. Trump and co believe immigrants, the environment and the sick are a waste of money (who includes tax benefits for the rich in a health bill!). The UK decided they'd be richer without the EU. The SNP believe Scotland would be better off standing alone. Some might say it is about determining their own future but they all believe they will be better off. Money is always the bottom line. Michele Morton, unknown

Migrant debate Our readers react to the news that Spain’s coasts are becoming a favourite for migrants and refugees
Suck it up
So Spain can deal with millions of tourists but not with 6,800 refugees? Perhaps they want to ask how Germany managed to house more than one million refugees in 2015? And in 2017, another 150,000 refugees have already entered Germany. Wolfgang, Estepona
Send them back
According to official statistics by the UN, only 30% are refugees, the remaining 70% are immigrants coming for welfare only! There should be no help for these ‘people’. Send them back. Lukas Skiers, Alicante
Absolute rubbish
A lot of people have been spouting absolute bull**** on this issue. I have spent the last two years scooping out babies, children and sexually abused women from the sea off the coast of Libya and Greece. There is a lot of talk of europe being flooded and overwhelmed, well, do the math and look at the figures...You could fit the last two years’ numbers in Cornwall. To all the people saying ‘blow them out of the water’ and ‘send ‘em back’.....If I had a chance I would send some of you on those boats, and you would soon be begging for NGOs and nations to rescue you and take you in. Dan Teuma, Gibraltar
Work together
Spain must start speaking to the leaders of the African countries whose occupants are leaving. Why are so many people leaving their countries and coming to Spain? It is time these countries worked together more to deal with these issues. Anne Moulay, London
Round them up
Load them up and take them back across the Mediterranean and dump them on the beach. That’s what you need to to. Now what part of that don’t you Spanish understand? Tony Statham, Cadiz
Racist views
The majority of refugees head for Germany for the job opportunities on offer. The fact that some of you think they all want a life on benefits only shows you as an awful racist. I guess you get your version of the 'truth' from the likes of Britain First. Julie Frank, Manilva

OREIGN investment into Spanish property is expected to break all records this year. Demand from abroad has grown for seven years straight, according to international consultant firm JLL. In the first half of this year alone, foreign buyers and funds have more than doubled the investment on the same period last year. So far external investors have sunk €888 million into buying Spanish property, smashing last year’s record of €330 million. While Madrid and Barcelona are the leading hotspots and attract the most interest from foreign buyers, Malaga, Sevilla, Mallorca, Bilbao and San Sebastian are also bringing in big numbers. It comes as it was revealed that Spain is still the most searched for destination for Brits looking to buy abroad.
Huge growth in foreign investment into Spain, which is set to go well over €1 billion in 2017
According to Rightmove, Spain is the most popular destination for Britons looking to relocate or buy a second home. Average monthly internet searches total over 2.5m, some 74% above its closest rival and second placed France. Portugal came third on the list, followed by the US and Italy. Alicante was the most searched region in Spain, increasing by 53% from last year. At €126,054, however, it also has the lowest average enquiry price of the most popular sunny regions. According to Rightmove, 62% of Alicante enquiries
are for houses, while 38% are looking for flats or apartments. With an average enquiry price of €397,813, property in Mallorca is most popular with high budget buyers, with 54% looking for flats and apartments and 46% looking for houses. Despite properties in Mallorca being three times higher in price than those in Alicante, it still tops the list as the second most searched for property destination in Spain. Malaga is in third position, with an average enquiry price of €191,830. Chris Please, Head of Rightmove Overseas, said
that Spain remains the most exciting investment for British buyers. “Over 12 months, we received an average of 2.5 million searches a month for property in Spain, indicating just how in-demand this sunny country is for property-seekers. “Whether it’s the large expat community, the sunny climate, the food or simply the easy transition into relaxed Spanish culture that has Britons enthralled, Spain’s proximity to the UK, cheap flights and short travel time has it consistently emerging as the most popular property destinations abroad.” In terms of upmarket property he also singled out Mallorca, for its great climate, upmarket living and picturesque surroundings. “Mallorca is perfectly positioned as the ultimate destination for high budget UK buyers looking to purchase their own slice of paradise.”

Every single leading index is currently in the black.

That said, and as I always point out, national house price figures are not much use when it comes to understanding local markets. However, they may influence market expectations and confidence, which is why I keep an eye on them. Meanwhile, Spain’s leading appraisal company Tinsa publishes house price data categorised by area (based on its own valuation). Looking at the data published by Tinsa for May, we see that house prices in big cities and provincial capitals were up by 6.1%, by 4.7% on the Mediterranean coast, and by 2.9% in

Royal rip-off? SPAIN’S king and queen were appropriately given the royal red carpet treatment when they stayed at Buckingham Palace this month. And the high profile visit (pictured right), over three days, all helped to make the British Queen’s home the most expensive to run in the UK. According to website Comparethemarket.com the property costs €150,000 per month to heat and power, all paid by the British taxpayer. The central London residence

The iconic property has 775 rooms, a movie theatre, swimming pool, post office, chapel and more. Meanwhile, ex-Real Madrid star David Beckham spends €1,615 per month on energy for his €50 million London pad. The seven-bedroom Georgian town househad a reported €9.1 million renovation.
Buyers bound to fall in love with two villas where hit show Love Island is filmed

ANS of Love Island can snap up the luxury €3 million Spanish villa where the raunchy reality TV show was first filmed. Appropriately named ‘Casa Amor’ (House of Love), the new buyers will be spoilt cooling off in the 14-metre swimming pool in stunning Mallorca grounds. The four-bedroom villa, for sale through agent Chestertons, hosted the contestants before the islanders cast split into two groups last year on the ITV show. The villa, in Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, near Manacor, is the perfect fit for singles looking for love, complete with its ‘cheeky’ photography and artwork adorning the walls. It has a very secluded setting and counts on its own vineyard with lemon and orange trees bringing a wonderful smell to the air. One wonderful bath offers a magnificent view of the gardens. Meanwhile, the villa, which is the current set for series III of the hit show is also understood to be going on the market. The sprawling pad, just outside Cala Millor, is set against a stunning backdrop of rolling green hills, with a show-stopping

The love pad comes complete with a hot tub, outdoor gym (which doubles as Kem’s hair salon), alfresco kitchen, fire pit, marble bathtub for two perfect for the contestants to fall in – or out – of love. The nearby town of Sant Llorenc is reportedly buzzing with crew from the programme, which has left locals bemused but delighted with the increase in business.

Break-in fears
AN overwhelming 60% of householders in Spain fear their homes will be broken into when they go away. However, despite this only one in 10 concerned homeowners have put anti-theft measures in place. Many Spanish families from cities such as Barcelona leave homes empty for about a month while they head to the coasts, making the properties easy targets for thieves. Brits who have holiday homes in Spain or expats who travel frequently can also leave their homes empty for months. Some 41% of homeowners know someone who has been burgled, while 5% say they have already been targeted. Despite this, the survey by Securitas Direct found that only 11% have a radio alarm. Just 10% have security cameras installed and only 9% have reinforced doors.

RENTAL prices in Spain are rising four times faster than house prices. New research has shown rental costs have increased on average by 8% in Spain in the first six months of this year. The report paints a picture of a sustained recovery in the Spanish housing market. “All the data confirms a path of sustained growth nationally that began several quarters ago, although now more moderate and less intense than in previous quarters,” explains María Enríquez, at property consultancy firm Gesvalt.

Building dreams
Demand just keeps growing as developers get to work on Spain’s favourite Costa, writes Laurence Dollimore
Ojen resort
There are new luxury developments ... and then there’s Palo Alto. Overlooking the sparkling Med, this premium gated community is situated on the doorstep of the protected mountains behind Ojén, five minutes from Marbella. Acclaimed Spanish architects Villarroel Torrico are unveiling an extensive range of luxury apartments and penthouses with a contemporary design and high tech construction techniques including spacious terraces with breathtaking views, open-plan dining areas, high quality fixtures and fittings and floor to ceiling windows for optimum natural light. Ailse Warriner, Marketing Director for Palo Alto, says: “Our clients are looking for something special that offers them high qualities as well as the option to personalise their home according to their needs. We have buyers from all over the world, both first and second home buyers who appreciate the unique architecture and love the onsite Health Club with indoor pool and spa, concierge service and rental management facilities.” Construction is now underway with Phase 1 due for completion by December 2018. Prices start from €440,000.
T
HE Costa del Sol’s construction industry has gotten back into full swing with several exciting projects nearing completion and others just getting started. From exclusive hillside developments to gamechanging lagoons, it almost feels like we are back to the good old days, before the financial crash decimated the booming market in 2008. Prices across the country have been increasing at a steady rate. Enness International has pointed to ‘sustained growth’ in the country’s property market following the savage recession that left many developments along the Costa del Sol unfinished. Record-low interest rates, cheap credit and a Europe-wide economic recovery have also helped to attract buyers to Spain. And Brits, who have been made slightly more hesitant thanks to the Brexit vote, are still buying into the Spanish dream, and for everyone that has backed out, a Norweigan, Swede and German has been there to fill his space. As thousands of cranes are being erected along the coast, we take a look at the most exciting developments looking to shape up Andalucia’s skyline.

Riverside, Benahavis
S tarting from €2
25,000
An enclave of 75 luxury concept apartments are to be the first to be built in Benahavis town since 2006. They will be just 300 meter from the village centre with its popular bars, restaurants and shops. “The location is perfect,” says Scott Marshall of Properties Spain, “It’s still very Spanish here and hasn’t been overdeveloped or made into a tourist town.” The development is right beside the river and consists of two- and three-bed apartments built in four blocks around communal gardens and a swimming pool.
Wealthiest
All apartments have spacious lounges, fully-fitted open plan kitchens, plus a parking space and storage room a piece. But that’s not all you get when you purchase a property in this exclusive town, the wealthiest in Andalucia if not the country. “For just €20, every homeowner gets a resident card,” explains Marshall, who has been selling property in the area for decades, “this grants access to all sports facilities, including gyms, tennis and padel tennis and much more.” Much more includes pilates and free Spanish lessons. “It means you’re guaranteed a commu-
nity feel when living here,” adds Marshall whose company, Properties Spain, handles 90% of the town’s properties.

Elliot Wright – Olivia’s La Cala, Mijas, Spain At his restaurant, reality TV star Wright pairs a family-oriented atmosphere, and a tranquil beach setting, with a trendy and upscale take on cuisine. The decorum of the venue evokes a ‘tropical paradise’, and the food follows this well-executed theme. Guests can indulge in delicious meals and cocktails of the week, created by the restaurant’s very own mixologists. There is also a wide array of live entertainment as the perfect background for the perfect dinner.
Juan Carlos Ferrero Hotel, Bocairent, Spain
Terry Venables – La Escondida, Alicante, Spain Ex-England manager Terry Venable’s La Escondida, or ‘The Hidden One’, is the perfect mix of rustic and contemporary. Built in 1881 as a hunting lodge, it has since been converted to a hotel, yet still retains a quasirural vibe. Its location in Alicante, although secluded, is not an incredible distance from the beach. From clay pigeon shooting to hiking, this destination, while costing €140 per night, is an ideal place for those wanting to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Ex-tennis ace Juan Carlos Ferrero’s Ferrero Hotel, located in Bocairent, is the ideal spot for those who enjoy a change of scenery within their living situation because each of the 15 rooms have a different theme and style. In fact, picking your favorite style is made easy with the diversity. Inspired by Ferrero? You can play tennis just like him in the provided courts, along with other sports and activities! Even though the rooms are limited, the amount of people who can fit in the tent is so high it’s practically unlimited. Capped at 800 guests, the area is ideal for weddings, gatherings, or other types of large gatherings.
Lionel Messi – Bellavista del Jardin Norte, Barcelona, Spain
Gerard Pique – Yours, Barcelona, Spain Soccer star Gerard Pique’s ‘Yours’ achieves an impeccable balance between contemporary styles and classic foods. Guests can enjoy a variety of salad, fish and pasta dishes, yet also indulge in the many styles of hamburgers that are offered. The versatility that exists in the cooking style possessed by the restaurant can be attributed to the mixture of young and old in the cooking team. While the diverse menu is capable satisfying even the pickiest of appetites, the Jazz nights that the restaurant takes pride in will certainly bolster the spirit of guests, and make for a pleasant and lively evening.
While staying at Messi’s hotel in Sitges, one can venture up to his restaurant in Barcelona. That’s right, this celebrity soccer ace seems to be as active in the Spanish business scene as he is in the football scene. As the name suggests, the restaurant has a very small-town, garden feel, evoked by the rustic wooden floors, and the flower decorum. Messi has also added an element of fun to the venue, including arcade games and TVs where guests can watch the latest football game while enjoying family-style, Spanish cuisine.

Spain is home to a profusion of elegant hotels and lavish restaurants, making it very unsurprising that this destination has been a popular holiday choice among these A-listers for many years. Here, the food is inspired through a world outlook. From traditional Portuguese cuisine to importations from Asia-and intriguing twists on everything - this place is sure to diversify a palate.
In Mijas lies Lord Alan Sugar’s Byblos ex Hotel which he recently sold. Closed for a number of years, then purchased and reopened, the hotel is known for its curved shape.
David Bentley & Stephen Carr – La Sala, Marbella, Spain La Sala, owned by ex-footballer David Bentley and Stephen Carr, in Marbella, is the only restaurant in the town that offers live music every day of the week, and all day on Sundays. Throwbacks to old America, from the Rat Pack to the Jersey Boys, will be heard. In fact, tributes to famous artists are always playing. The restaurant is ideal for those who enjoy a busy, fast, and lively area while eating.
Sir Richard Branson Sa Terra Rotja, Mallorca Sir Richard Branson’s villas, Sa Terra Rotja, Sa Punta de S’Aguila, and Son Balagueret, are not for the average person. Ranging from €11 ,225 to €16,085 per night, these locations are absurdly expensive. The seventh night is free, though! Built on 680 acres, the land stretches from beaches to hills. With private chefs for each room, anything will be cooked and your room can be stocked with anything you so desire.
Lionel Messi (again) – MiM Hotel, Sitges, Spain Argentina superstar Lionel Messi definitely scores a goal with this luxury, seafront spot. The MiM Hotel provides guests with a place where they can enjoy ‘the Mediterranean lifestyle’ seeing that its location in Sitges Spain allows guests to have access to both the beach, as well as the monuments, shops, and entertainment of the city center. The hotel has 77 rooms, with spa rooms that can cost as much as €260 per night. In their leisure time, guests can also enjoy a sky bar and additional spa treatment, that includes massages, hydrotherapy, an oxygen cabin, and more.

GREEN WINE: Son Juliana bodega counts on wind and solar power for energy
Mallorca winery runs on 100% solar-powered energy
A
MALLORCA winery is operating on 100% renewable energy. The 1,300-metre-square Son Juliana bodega is set just below the spectacular Tramuntana mountain range between Santa Eugenia and Biniali. Built in just 15 days, the winery is the brainchild of local architects Munarq Arquitectes. Cork-insulated roofs allow a stable temperature for the wine to be stored, with some 40,000 litres a year currently produced. “They were in a hurry, so because of this we built in a prefab concrete structure, built in 15 days," revealed a spokesperson. "We used a prefab concrete structure, and local and natural materials like mares – a local sandy stone – in the ex-

The linear building has a concrete base which is covered in mares-stone. Wine is bottled and labelled at the westend of the building then stored in a cool area near the entrance. The winery is located in the basement, because it requires a special temperature and humidity conditions. The retaining walls are stone to take advantage of the thermal mass and soil moisture that remained during the summer. The ventilation and temperature is carried through pipes connected to geothermal heat pumps.

MORTGAGE THINK TANK by mortgage broker Tancrede de Pola
Steady wins the race Andalucia leads the pack in mortgage sales as Spain’s recovery takes firm and steady hold
A
NDALUCIA is leading the way in the Spanish mortgage stakes. It comes after the number of home mortgages granted to prospective buyers in Spain dropped by 11.4% in April when compared with the same month in 2016, according to Spain's Statistical Office (INE). A total of 21,163 home mortgages were granted in the fourth month of this year. Andalucia registered the most with a total of 4,467, followed by Madrid and Catalonia with 3,732 and 3,345 respectively. And while the number of mortgages dropped, their values increased. The average value stood at €112,834, rising by 5.4% when compared to April of last year. It comes as new data suggests the Spanish property market is avoiding a bubble and continuing to grow healthily, unlike pre-crisis where it was not unusual for (overseas) clients to buy multiple properties over the phone, sight unseen… clearly a recipe for disaster!
According to a recent Moody's report, the ratios of home sales are healthier now than those observed before the 2008 crisis. Caution is demonstrated by the banks when it comes to granting mortgage loans - now monthly cost must be covered three times by your net monthly salary and only 14% of loans granted reach 80% of the appraisal value (those only being for residents) - and this added to the strong adjustment in prices and the relative low level of transactions.
Meanwhile, mortgage lending as part of GDP has fallen dramatically, suggesting the mortgage bubble is deflating. The Spanish economy has gone from having outstanding mortgage loans equivalent to 100% of total GDP in 2009, the height of the economic crisis, to just to 59.29% last December. It makes Spain a safe and steady investment, and means if there was ever a time to invest, it’s probably now.

The costs of selling on the Costa, part 1
Find out about the costs you’ll have to cover before and after you find a buyer
Menorca making waves MENORCA’S property market is booming as the Balearics’ little brother flexes its muscles. The Mediterranean idyll, listed as a Unesco Biosphere zone in 1993, is famed for its spectacular countryside. Properties next to the beach or with a sea view have risen in value by 15% year-on-year. “Menorca reminds people of what the Mediterranean used to be like 40 years ago,” said Francisco Arnau of Engel & Völkers. “It’s relaxed and peaceful. Everyone knows each other and you can leave your keys in the car – no one cares.” Interest from French buyers has surged on the island, with one family recently snapping up Menorca’s most expensive property, an €11 million country estate. As the island’s property market motors on, Sothebys has decided to open an office in Mahon later this year. “Our contacts tell us that more and more wealthy families are moving to the island – they love the privacy combined with the interesting resident community,” said managing director Alejandra Vanoli. One local property expert, quantity surveyor Colin Guanaria from Menorca’s longest running estate agency, Bonnin Sanso, says prices in Menorca are ‘15-20%’ cheaper than in Mallorca.
A
lthough buyers are liable for the lion's share of the costs that arise from property sales in Spain, vendors do have to pay taxes and a number of other costs, both prior to putting a home on the market and on completion. In this article, we'll look at the costs you cannot avoid, while, in the next one, we'll see what deductions may be applied to mitigate taxes. The first thing is to get all your bills paid up to date. These include: municipal property tax (IBI); rubbish collection (basura), although, depending on where the property is, this may be included in the IBI; utilities; and, if the property is part of a community, community fees. You also need an energy efficiency certificate (Certificado de Eficiencia Energética, CEE). This must be issued by a registered technician and rates emissions and energy use on a scale from A to G. If the property is occupied for less than four months a year, you don't need a CEE, but do have to provide a written declaration. The average cost is €1.5/ m2, but can work out cheaper per m2 for larger properties. You now have everything you need to sell, so you may decide to work with an estate agent rather than go it alone. Most agents on the Costa del Sol, including Terra Meridiana, charge 5% of
the final sale price, plus 21% VAT. This may be negotiable, but should cover all costs of marketing your property, including listing, viewings, visits, and everything else to help it sell. And make sure you only agree to pay a fee if the property sells.
Sold
Once the property does sell, sellers are required to pay their taxes within 30 days after the signature of the public title deed (escritura). These are levied in accordance with the period of time a property has been owned, how much it has gained in value during that time, your fiscal status and residence, and the total amount of income you earn during the taxable period when your property is sold. The first is municipal capital gains tax (better known as plusvalía), which is paid to your local town council and calculated (based on the cadastral or rateable value) on the increase in the value of the land where the property stands. As a general rule, the longer you own a property, the more you pay. If you are not resident in Spain, buyers are obliged to retain the tax due on your behalf to avoid becoming liable for payment themselves. Spain's Constitutional Court recently ruled the law regulat-
ing how plusvalía is calculated null and void, stipulating that the tax can only be applied when the seller makes a profit. Nevertheless, some town councils continue to try to collect the tax, so we recommend you challenge any demand, if that is your case. The second is income tax (Impuesto sobre la Renta), paid to the Spanish Tax Agency and calculated on the difference between the price you paid (and costs arising from the purchase) and the sale price (less costs). If you're a resident in Spain, you pay income tax at a percentage that varies depending on your total earnings during the fiscal year. If you are not a resident, you pay a fixed rate of 19% of the taxable base if you reside in another European Union state and 24% if you are resident outside the EU. Again, buyers are required to retain 3% of the sale price on your behalf. Finally, if your property was mortgaged and you plan to pay off the outstanding loan when it is sold, most banks in Spain will charge a small commission. This usually is less than 1% and may be negotiable. Sick of it THE British government wants to clampdown on UK holidaymakers making fake food poisoning claims. It wants to slash the financial incentive of making claims against holiday firms, with the scams thought to cost Spanish hotels €100 million a year. Travel industry bosses and Spanish hotels have complained of a huge rise in such false claims.
Damaging
Justice Secretary David Lidington said the government wanted to cut the legal costs holiday firms had to pay out in such cases. "Our message to those who make false holiday sickness claims is clear - your actions are damaging and will not be tolerated," Mr Lidington said. Tourist and travel group ABTA said it ‘strongly welcomed’ the government’ move. The government said it would reduce the cash incentives of bringing such cases against holiday firms.
Keep it in the family SPANISH businesses are selling more internationally than ever. A study has revealed that 40% of their revenue comes from non-Spanish markets. It has also predicted that in the coming years, this will increase to 50%. Some 83% of the businesses analysed expect to sustain growth in revenue, while 8% predict aggressive growth. Of course, there is a downside to such growth - increased competition which is a concern for 19% of the businesses interviewed.

gal framework was needed by September 2018. Speaking at the same session, Willie Walsh, CEO of International Airlines Group said the EU and UK should sign comprehensive air transport agreements. “With policy support it ought to be relatively straightforward to agree a deal on aviation that will be ready when the UK leaves the EU,” he said. But Mr O’Leary retorted: “I think that’s an impossibility because there is no goodwill in Europe towards Britain. “The French and the Germans, when they have the opportunity to stick one into the British, they like nothing better.” “This is going to be a real mess,” Mr O’Leary added, “Brexit will be one of the great economic suicide notes in history.”
SPAIN is home to four out of 10 of Europe’s most visited tourism hotspots. And figures from Eurostat released yesterday show the Canary Islands was the most visited site on the continent. Catalunya came in third, the Balearic Islands – which include Mallorca and Ibiza – was ranked 5th, with Andalucia in 7th place. The Canary Islands registered a total of 94 million overnight stays in 2015, while Catalunya had just over 70 million nights. Nearly 90% of tourism nights spent in the EU are by EU residents, says the report. In 2016, tourist spent a whopping and recordbreaking €77 billion in the country according to figures from the country’s Ministry of Energy and Tourism. The country is already on track to beat that figure this year.

Clausula cost to banks
BANKS should pay all legal costs assumed in ‘floor clause’ mortgage cases. In a sentence handed down this month, Spain’s high court ruled that claimants would not be liable to pay costs if they bring a bank to court. The clausula suelo scandal saw four million homeowners hit when banks failed to lower mortgage interest rates in line with falling Euribor interest rates.
If you are travelling outside the European Community to one of the countries listed as requiring a Green Card, you will need to ask your insurance company to issue you a Green Card beforehand. It is estimated people were paying from €179 (Euribor +0.5%) to €213 (Euribor +1%) more on a €150,000 mortgage. “There would be a reverse deterrent effect consumers would not pursue litigation for minimal amounts owed,” the court ruling said. Last year, a Spanish court ruled ruled millions of clausula suelo mortgages were null and void due to a of ‘lack of transparency’ in the way they were sold during the property boom.
Jolly boom came to Spain from January to April, up 9.6% from the previous year. It comes after last year saw foreign tourists spend a mammoth €77 billion in Spain. That figure was an 8.3% increase on the year before. It meant that the average tourist spent €1,023 per week. The largest group was by
far the Brits, with 16.9 million visiting. Andalucia has already raked in €6 billion from tourism in the first quarter of this year. The latest figures by BNP Paribas International also highlight the British property mania for Spain, with 23% of UK property buyers planning to accelerate their purchases in the country.

PIRATE street sellers in Barcelona are launching their own brand of trainers. The Top Manta brand will buy the same fake Nike and Adidas trainers, but use its own logo. Known as manteros (blanket sellers) after the sheets they place their goods on, Barcelona’s 400 sellers are usually African men who endured a dangerous journey to arrive in Spain. “We wanted [the logo] to look a bit like a canoe, which is the form of transport by which most of us arrived in Europe,” said Aziz Fayé, a spokesman for the new Union of Street Sellers. “We’ve more or less sorted out the suppliers. What matters is that the manteros start selling Top Manta products instead of the shoes and T-shirts they’re selling now.”

They include 25 linear electron accelerators and two radiotherapy simulators. The first of the machines was placed in the University Hospital Reina Sofia to treat breast cancer. It comes after 32,000 new cancer cases are diagnosed in Andalucia each year.
A STRAIN of gonorrhea that’s resistant to antibiotics has arrived in Spain. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), three people infected with the sexually transmitted infection have been identified as not responding to last-line antibiotics. One is in Spain while the other two are in France and Japan. Considering these countries have good healthcare systems, it is highly likely that the ‘superbug’ strain is already much more common - and being transmitted - in other parts of the world where there are more lower-income countries. “These cases may just be the tip of the iceberg, since systems to diagnose and report untreatable infections are lacking in lower-income countries where gonorrhoea is actually more common,” said Dr Teodora Wi, medical officer for human reproduc-

he summer is well and truly here and with the start of the summer holidays we’re all getting out and enjoying the sun more. To help you and your family enjoy the sun safely this summer, we wanted to focus on the damage sun can do to your eyes and how you can protect them. Q: Can the sun really damage my eyes? A: Yes. The same as our skin, our eyes can also be damaged by UV rays and can lead to various problems. Children under 10 in particular should be protected, as their eyes can’t block as much UV as adults’ eyes can. Q: What are the effects of sun damage on eyes?
Blind date?
Q: What can I do to protect my eyes? A: A recent study from the Hospital Universitario Doctor Peset in Valencia suggests that by eating broccoli every day, you can increase your macular pigment by up to 30%, thereby reducing the impact of sun on your eyes. In addition to a diet rich in carotenes, you should also wear sunglasses with total UV protection. These glasses should comply with UNE-EN 1836:2006 + A1:2008 or bear the CE kite mark and be marked UV 400. Choose large or wraparound glasses and pair with a hat to maximise protection.

Cool down THE Andalucian government will provide air conditioning in schools next year. In addition, blinds will be replaced with exterior slats and vegetation will be planted to provide shade to protect school children from the sun. The ministry said that "work is being done rigorously" to "give the best solution to students and teachers." It comes in the wake of an ‘exceptional heatwave’ during which temperatures have skyrocketed, reaching highs of around 45C.
THE UK ambassador to Spain has insisted Britain is keen to secure the residency rights of Spanish students as soon as possible. More than 10,000 Spanish students are enrolled in higher education at UK universities but the vote to leave the EU has plunged their futures into doubt. It comes after UK prime minister Theresa May suggested the more than three million EU citizens living in the UK would have to apply for a residency card after the official day of Brexit in 2019. The proposal was widely criticised by EU politicians. May said a new category of

Addressing the issue GIBRALTAR’S Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has discussed Brexit in a talk at the University of Malaga. The address took place at the Congress and Exhibition Palace Adolfo Suarez in Marbella on July 11. During his talk, Picardo referenced President Jean Claude Juncker and the implications of Brexit on Gibraltar. He explained that the Rock generates a lot of wealth for the Campo and for the Costa del Sol. The talk contributed to a programme of summer courses run by the university from July 11 – 14. Picardo was asked to give the opening address.
Ageing Andalucia THE number of people under 24 in Andalucia will decrease from 2.27 million to 1.2 million in 15 years. A report by the School Council has also stated that the number of people ‘of a schoolable age’ in the whole of Spain will fall from 11.5 million to 10.1 million. Experts blame a low fertility rate. “A very low level of continued fertility lasting more than 30 years has resulted in a very sharp decline in the size of schoolage generations,” explains Professor Efe, Professor of PRIMARY schools in the region will Human Geography soon give classes on Andalucian hisat the University of tory. Just under 42,000 people in the study had died from a range of conditions including cancer, circulatory diseases, heart failure and stroke. Researchers found that the group with the highest consumption of coffee had a lower risk for all causes of death, compared to those who did not drink coffee. Lifestyle factors such as diet and smoking were taken into account. Men who drank at least two and a half cups a day reduced their risk by 12% and women by 7%. It also reduced the risk of dying from digestive diseases by 51% for men, and 40% for women, and lowered the risk of death from circulatory disease for women by 22%.
ONE of the most important questions in Spanish history has finally been answered which city has the cheapest beer? New figures show Cadiz is the best city in the entire country to find a good-value cerveza. With a caña there costing on average just €1.25, it beat other low-cost regions like Aragon (€1.59), Murcia (€1.60) and Castilla La Mancha (€1.75). Madrid is the most expensive at €2.93, followed by Barcelona at €2.29 and then Mallorca at €2.25. An average caña in Malaga will cost you €2.12 The nationwide average is €1.87, according to the Cuponation survey. Statistics provided by the Federacion Espanola de Hosteleria y Restauracion (FEHR) reveal Spain has 101,397 bars, one for every 458 inhabitants. Spaniards drink an estimated 2.1 billion litres of beer a year.

HEY are the aroma and flavour of summer on the Costas and a spectacle to see - skewers of shimmering silver fish fresh from the sea, spit-roasted al fresco until golden over olive wood fires laid out in traditional fishing boats. Espeto sardines form a continuous barbecue chain on beaches along the coast from east of Malaga to west of Cadiz, their familiar salty scent marking the annual transition from spring into summer. Best enjoyed at a beach bar by the sea shore with the wind in your hair and your toes in the sand, tourists are enchanted by this casual dining tradition. Spit-roasted sardines are as much of a staple on Andalucia’s gastronomic menu as its famous goats cheeses and home-grown pata negra jamon. Espeto comes from the verb ‘espetar’, which means ‘to spear’, and refers to the way in which the sardines are cooked on wooden skewers over fire. The tradition of cooking the fish in this way dates back to the master mariners of Phoenician times. After a long day working at sea, the famished fishermen would come back to shore in search of fast food. They began building small fires in their boats to grill sardines, the least expensive fish in their catch and a popular food choice among the poor. It was quite by accident that a Spanish monarch elevated them from a lowly peasant dish to the

The first ‘discovered’ by the culinary king soon found himself in Miguel cognoscenti in 1884, when King Martinez Soler’s chiringuito, a Alfonso XII was travelling to Axar- humble beach shack which was quia in order to survey the havoc the first of its kind in the area.
The restaurant owner presented him with a skewer of espetos but when His Highness reached for a knife and fork, Soler encouraged him to use his fingers. Entertained by the prospect of eating a mano, the monarch was soon licking his fingers and bestowed the highest praise on the dish. Thereafter, the owner also became known by a new title - ‘Sardine Miguel’ or ‘Miguel de las Sardinas’ - while the espeto grew in popularity, resulting in a profusion of chiringuitos popping up on beach fronts.
Pushing the boat out
Although chiringuitos have become fancier over the decades, the method for preparing and cooking espetos remains largely the same. Before they are cooked, the sardines are salted and placed in a bucket of ice for at least 30 minutes to make the flesh firmer. Traditionally, only olive oil and salt are used to season the fish but more adventurous chefs like to add herbs, such as rosemary, thyme or bay leaves, for extra flavor. The dish is constructed by spearing the sardines on a bamboo skewer - six to each spit. Medium-sized fish make the best espetos and they are ordered on the skewer from largest to smallest, with the bigger fish closer to the coals. The espetos are then stuck into sand and cooked over an olive-wood fire. Most amoragadores, or grillmasters, still cook them in boats on the sand as their fishermen ancestors did. The last step in the process is to enjoy the finished product. Espetos are best served with a crisp salad, bread

As tradition dictates, the best time for eating espetos is during the months with no ‘r’ in them (May, June, July, August). A more whimsical Spanish saying states that they should be eaten from ‘virgin to virgin’, which refers to the Virgen del Carmen Festival in July, and the Virgen de la Victoria Festival in September. For those who have fallen in love with the flavour of espetos, there are cookery courses available in Andalucia where you can learn how to prepare them directly from espeto grill-masters. One Malaga day course has a particularly enticing schedule which goes as follows: ‘a tour of El Palo and its distinct features and spots, a visit to the traditional shipyard and maritime museum where guests will see handmade boats and arts, an espeto cooking class taught by a grill-master, and finally, an espeto tasting on the beach accompanied by salad, bread, a drink, and a thematic gift.’ They may not be the biggest or flashiest fish, but they have had a massive impact on culture, gastronomy and tourism in Spain. The famous Costa del Sol ‘lifestyle’ simply would not be the same without them.

July in Marbella is simply divine... as long as you don’t leave home that is
T
HIS July, I've decided that I'm not leaving the house unless I absolutely have to - nor dressing, for that matter, as it's far too hot for anything more than a swimsuit. And make-up?.. Forget it! On the few occasions that I've braved the roads and headed out, the traffic has been chaos, parking impossible, drivers demented and the combination of heat, crowds and queues have had me beating a retreat home where I sit on the kitchen floor - in my pants - with the freezer door open and my head pressed firmly against a bag of frozen spinach, vowing never to venture out again. Each year they say it's getting hotter, but this summer I'm finding the heat increasingly hard to bear. I mention this to a friend, as I lift a cake out of the oven and wipe the sweat from my brow, "It could be hot flashes." She remarks, sipping her coffee, "You might be menopausal, you never know!" I look up in horror. Menopause?! "How do I know?" I demand, as I stand sweating, wearing a fetching combination of swimwear, a kitchen apron and oven gloves.

Putt more on FEMALE golf players must now adhere to a new dress code. From now on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LGPA) has stated that players must refrain from wearing miniskirts or shirts with low necklines. The new rules were sent to all female players via an email from the association’s president Vicki Goetze-Ackerman. Golfers who do not comply with the new dress code will be fined $1,000 for the first offence, and the amount will double when further ‘breaches’ are made.
TANTRUM: Rahm
Rambo JON Rahm has taken on a former bomb-disposal expert as his mental coach in a bid to defuse his volatile temper. Joseba del Carmen’s job is to ensure that Rahm focuses on the matter at hand rather than abuse his golf clubs and surrounding objects. “His philosophy is very personal,” Rahm says, “He likes to work with emotion and see what emotional state you are better off playing in. We have been working recently on new things that I really don’t know how to explain. “He gets into quantum physics, which is kind of complicated. It’s a different way of thinking to traditional psychologists. “Joseba likes me to feel the emotion but not to exteriorise it in that manner.” Speaking about his tantrum at the US Open he said: “What happened was so weak and it was bad for me. Anger and letting my emotions not get out of control is something I’ve been working on since I was a kid.”

WIMBLEDON champion Garbine Muguruza can become the world’s best player, her coach believes. The Venezuelan-born Spaniard beat five-times champions Venus Williams 7-5 6-0 in last Saturday’s final to record her first All England title. Last year, the 23-year-old scooped the French Open with trainer Conchita Martinez adamant Muguruza can secure herself as the leading light in women’s tennis. “She has the potential and she wants to win more,” said Martinez. “She is very happy with her game. She beat the World Number One,

Football corruption probe leads to the arrest of the president of the Spanish FA
THE boss of Spain’s football federation has been arrested after an in-depth corruption investigation. Angel Maria Villar, president of Real Federacion Espanola de Futbol (RFEF), has been charged with misappropriation, corruption and misrepresentation. Villar Llona, who is also a senior vice-president at Fifa and Uefa, was arrested on Tuesday morning along with his son Gorka and three other federation executives. The Guardia Civil said the football officials were detained while raids were carried out at the federation headquarters in Madrid. Police said the five men were arrested on charges

of corruption as part of an investigation into the finances of the federations. Spain’s minister of sport, Inigo Mendez de Vigo, insisted that the country’s laws are being enforced and ‘nobody is above the law.’ The investigation was launched in 2016 and has included various searches at the headquarters as well as several private homes linked to the detainees. It is alleged that the group were involved in promoting games between the national team and other countries, which led to monetary gain. Kerber, and she can go all the way.” On the back of her inaugural Wimbledon triumph, Muguruza rose from number 15 to number five in the world rankings. Former number one Serena Williams is pregnant, with Muguruza and Britain’s Johanna Konta, both rising above Williams, who beat Muguruza in the 2015 Wimbledon final. “I didn’t want to lose this time because I know the difference,” Muguruza said. “I’m happy that once again I see myself winning a Grand Slam, something that is so hard to do.”
AXED: Podium kiss
Kiss it goodbye VUELTA a Espana organisers are looking at ditching the traditional podium kiss. Grand Tour podium finishers receive a bottle of champagne and a kiss from a beauty queen at the end of each stage. But Spain’s tour, which takes part in the punishing August heat, is expected to axe the cermony in favour of ‘elegantly’ dressed male and female stewards, according to Javier Guillen, director general of Unipublic, the Vuelta’s owner. “We are aware of the social and media debate that has been generated over recent months about the presence of hostesses on the podium,” said Guillen. Left-wing councillors in Jerez tried to ban ‘paddock girls’ at this year’s MotoGP, with race organisers ignoring the call. The Vuelta starts on August 19 in Nimes, France.

Loved up? Not likely! IT’S a touching image of two Spanish leaders… which could not be further from the truth. The graffiti etched on a wall in Barcelona captures a romantic moment between Prime Minister Jose Maria Rajoy and Catalan leader Carlos Puigdemont. It is based on the famous Berlin wall graffiti of East German leader Erich Honecker and his Soviet counterpart Leonid Brezhnev.

ART: Rajoy embraces Catalan leader
Wanting to stay? CATALONIA will declare independence from Spain within 48 hours if its voters back secession in October, a draft bill has said. However, a recent poll put those in favour at just 44.3% with those against at 48.5%. The referendum promised by Catalan leader Carlos Puigdemont on October 1 will require a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to the offer of independence. If ‘Yes’ wins, the regional government plans to declare independence within two days. But if ‘No’ wins, an early election would be called to form a new regional government. The Constitutional Court and conservative government have repeatedly blocked secessionist challenges.
‘A week ago a couple of tourists stopped and said Nolan could be George’s brother and I thought I don’t see it that bad but I think I don’t see it because he’s my son,’ she said. Known for his side parted blonde tresses, there is no denying the likeness between the prince, also three, and Nolan. Strangely enough, even their birthdays are close as George turns four later this month, Nolan will follow close behind in August. However that’s where the similarities between the two families end, says Charmaine, an accountant. ‘I wish I looked like Kate Middleton but sadly I don’t,” she said.
