On to the Next Phase!
We have completed the first phase of the Complete the Vision Capital Campaign!! In this newsletter we wish to sincerely thank all donors to date for their generosity and support. We are officially in Phase II of the campaign this year – Building Communities. This phase seeks to raise needed funds for the construction of the new Activities Center. This Activities Center will most certainly build upon the existing O’Neal community while also reaching out to our local area friends and neighbors. The new gymnasium includes a regulation size basketball court with seating for 700 people. The addition of two practice courts allows for earlier practice times for our teams and will provide for intramural activities. Due to this beautiful new facility, O’Neal was chosen to host the State Volleyball Tournament this year. With seating for 250 people, the theater provides an intimate venue for student-driven performances as well as opportunities for the greater community. New this year, the theater is home for the newly developed Kaleidoscope Family Series of performances hosted by the Arts Council of Moore County. Two remaining performances are scheduled in February and March of 2010. $1,000,000 and above Donors

The Meyer Family-an early O’Neal supporter The C. Louis Meyer Family Foundation has given the “anchor gift” for the second phase of the Complete the Vision capital campaign - now called Building Communities. Starting with the donation of land on which the O’Neal campus now rests, the Meyer family has been a longtime supporter of O’Neal and its efforts. O’Neal had a chance to talk with Terry Brown, a board member of the C. Louis Meyer Family Foundation to learn more about his family. C. Louis Meyer was the founder of CECO Corporation, a concrete engineering company. Originally in Omaha, the company was moved to Chicago after World War II. Chicago is where C. Louis Meyer’s grandsons, Terry and Louis Brown, were raised. Mr. Meyer was an avid equestrian who loved to fox hunt. His wife preferred to golf; like so many others, the Sandhills of North Carolina was very attractive to them as a vacation destination. In 1942, the Meyers purchased a 500 acre farm with a home; the original part of which was built in 1895. Through the years, Mr. Meyer continued to purchase acreage that bordered the 500 acre farm and, at one time, owned 1500 acres. The farm became “the family compound” where children and grandchildren would all come to spend summers and other special occasions with the Meyers. In 1963, the Meyer family donated the land that is now property of Sandhills Community College. In 1970, one of the Meyer daughters, Mary Elaine Meyer O’Neal, donated 40 acres to the Sandhills Independent School Corporation, with the request to have the school named after her husband, Wallace O’Neal, who had passed away the year before. In 1990, the three grandchildren - brothers Terry and Louis Brown and cousin, Heidi Hall-Jones - inherited the remaining 1265 acres of the Louis Meyer Farm. They had a decision to make -sell or develop the property. All of them enjoyed the game of golf and they thought that there was opportunity for another private course in town. In 1994 the first trees were cut to begin the housing and (2) 18-hole course development now called Forest Creek. So, how did the C. Louis Meyer Family Foundation come about? A public company, the Meyer CECO Foundation was created as a way to funnel requests for contributions

from CECO Corporation. In 1986, CECO became private in a leveraged buyout, whereby the foundation was renamed the Meyer Family Foundation. 1n 1999, the Meyer Family Foundation was divided between the three grandchildren. Brothers, Terry and Louis named their foundation the C. Louis Meyer Family Foundation. Terry Brown has lived in the Sandhills for the past 11 years managing and developing Forest Creek. He has three children, Angeline Leonard (with grandson, James) in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; Whitney Healey in Chicago and a son, Foster Brown who lives here. Terry is married to Susan Clift Brown. Terry is currently on The O’Neal Board of Trustees and is chair of the buildings and grounds committee. Terry commented on what O’Neal has done for the community. He states, “It’s a joy to be involved in O’Neal’s growth. It ranks with schools in much higher developed areas and I feel privileged to be a part of it. The success of O’Neal is a contributor to our family heritage.” Board of Trustees Vice President and Treasurer Stan Bradshaw, who has known Terry Brown for a long time, concludes by saying, “One of the aspects of O’Neal I appreciate most is that it is indeed a story about families, community and the pursuit of excellence. It is gratifying for me to see and know the families that were most instrumental in founding the school nearly 40 years ago and to see so many of those families still involved today. There has been no family more involved and more key to O’Neal’s success than the Meyer/Brown family. All of us at O’Neal owe Terry and his family immense gratitude for all they have done.”
