Dear Members of the O’Neal Community: Forty years ago, on September 7, 1971, The Wallace O’Neal Day School opened its doors to students in grades 4-6. The vision and determination of a group of parents and supporters allowed for an independent school to exist in the Sandhills. Throughout the years, it is with the same vigor and never-ending desire for growth and improvement from our constituency that has made The O’Neal School a great place to learn. In celebration of our forty years, we’re returning to focus on the independent school culture. In the recent neighborhood chats, I educated parents on the characteristics of an independent school and how it is different from the largely public school environment in which we are situated. It is value and belief in what O’Neal provides for our students, shown through support from our constituency that keeps O’Neal in operation. As you will review in our 2010-2011 annual report, there are many individuals who have given to O’Neal in some fashion. It is with giving from all who believe in what we do, that O’Neal will continue to thrive. In this magazine, you will read about those “founders” who attended our first official Founders Day celebration. In addition to our founders “coming home”, you will also read about one of our alums who has returned home to open a business as well as an interview with two O’Neal juniors who have just returned to O’Neal from attending other schools. Abstracts of our new faculty and staff members are included as well. Congratulations to our middle school boys’ soccer team for their second consecutive conference championship title! I wish you the best as the holiday season begins. Cheers,

Alan K. Barr

Chairman, Board of Trustees

Dear O’Neal Community: Your Board of Trustees and I are very pleased with the start of a great school year. There is always something new at O’Neal, producing a positive outcome for our students. Your knowledge and support of an independent school culture helps O’Neal to be successful. The 41st annual auction, February Fiesta is scheduled for February 4, 2012. I hope that you consider being involved with the School’s largest annual event. Be a part of a successful auction by helping with its coordination and auction item collection, buy a $10,000 raffle ticket, underwrite auction expenses as a business alliance member, attend the auction and bid on auction items. There is an opportunity for everyone to be involved. Please consult O’Neal’s Director of Institutional Advancement, John Madden, to learn more. The Board encourages parental input for its many tasks at hand. Our committees this year are Strategic Planning, Finance and Development. If you have a particular interest in any of these areas, please do not hesitate to contact me. As you review the 2010-2011 Annual Report, take a look at the many opportunities you have to become involved and the many individuals who support our mission. An O’Neal education continues to turn adolescents into global achievers. With your continued support, O’Neal can hold steadfast to “Transforming Lives”. Thank you for all that you do to support our students, faculty and staff.

The O’Neal School will warm up our cold February weather with a festive celebration. February Fiesta, O’Neal’s 41st annual auction, will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 6pm at the Fair Barn in Pinehurst. Please save the date and plan on attending this annual signature event that supports the operating budget of The O’Neal School. Your support is needed at many levels – as donors, purchasers and volunteers. There is a group of dedicated volunteers to work on the auction committee this year. They will make many decisions regarding the details of this event – from donor solicitations, decorations, invitations, catering and student projects. The financial sponsors for the auction are part of O’Neal’s Business Alliance program. Students from all three divisions will take part as invitation assemblers and thank you note writers to the many donors. O’Neal could not host this annual auction without the support of the local business community and parents.

On Saturday evening, beginning at 6pm, the Fiesta will kick into high gear with over 300 silent auction items up for bid and a live auction with items such as trips, beach house stays and one-of-a-kind experiences. There will be special drinks along with selections of food to match a Spanish Fiesta theme! This is an elegant evening with a full host bar and a tapas dinner catered by Chef Mark Elliott of Elliotts on Linden. If you are interested in donating to the auction with items or financial support or you would like to join the dedicated group of individuals who are orchestrating the event, please contact John Madden at jmadden@onealschool.org or at (910) 692-6920 ext. 130. Come celebrate February Fiesta! on Saturday, February 4th.

Again this year, there will be a Jewelry Raffle and a $10,000 Cash Raffle. The jewelry item, donated by Honeycutt Jewelers on Broad Street in Southern Pines, will be a beautiful white gold and diamond ring in an oval shape with a rope band. Tickets will be $60 each or 2/$100. You may also purchase a ticket for a chance to win $10,000. Only 325 tickets will be sold – the odds of winning are much better than the lottery! The $10,000 Cash Raffle order form is on the next page. The winners for both raffles will be selected at the auction. There will be a Preview on Friday, February 3rd from 9am-12pm. Sweet Feed will cater the breakfast and JT Davenport & Sons of Sanford will underwrite the event and supply beverages and service items. Guests at the Preview will get to bid on all the auction items before the big event and Lower School students will perform!! Jewelry raffle and $10,000 Cash Raffle tickets will be available for purchase as well. 6

Alumni Notes Coming Home…Spotlight on Alumnus Anna Grace Schneider

has founded Carolina Outdoor Contracting, a design build firm.

Anna Schneider, a 2003 graduate, came to O’Neal in the 4th grade. She was extremely engaged and active within the school community. In her Upper School years she was involved with JV and varsity volleyball, SGA, Key Club (VP and Co-President), SEAC, NHS, Relay for Life and competed in horseback riding in her free time. After excelling at O’Neal, Anna spent the summer after her senior year with SeaMester, a “water-based academic and adventure training program” as she sailed for 40 days from the British Virgin Islands to Dominica. In the fall of 2003, Anna attended Clemson University and majored in pre-professional healthcare. After graduation she moved to Naples, Florida and worked for the Ritz Carlton Beach Resort in purchasing and sales in the spa boutique. In 2008 Anna began working for Georgeson Group, a commercial interior design firm specializing in spa and hotel interior design.

In June, Anna opened a new store on Broad Street in Southern Pines, Traveling Chic Boutique, which was the name of her trunk show company in Florida. Traveling Chic Boutique has affordable clothes and accessories for teens and hip and trendy moms! She travels to New York City at least four times a year to purchase merchandise for the store. While she’s in New York, she stays with her high school best friend, Jenny Pottle (2003). Anna’s store has become extremely successful…so much so that she needs to make a trip to the Atlanta merchandise mart to purchase more items so she will be well-stocked with merchandise for the all-important holiday season!! There is a patio space next to the store that Anna has remodeled and uses for trunk shows and charity shopping fundraisers. Recently she purchased a 1964 Airstream Safari that she has restored and remodeled to look like her store inside. Anna plans to use the Airstream for her trunk shows so that she can pull it up to a host’s house and have her merchandise on display in the Airstream!

As an international business development executive, Anna was traveling the world working with major hotel chains, such as Starwood, meeting with developers winning new spa and hotel interior design projects for the design team. After 2.5 years of nonstop international travel, she began Traveling Chic Boutique as a trunk show company with a friend, Katie Fry. They hosted shopping events for clients and donated 15% of the sales to local charities. Anna “came home” in the fall of 2010 after she married her “SeaMester sweetheart”, Eric Schneider. Anna and Eric got married in Charleston, SC. Eric was a graduate of Rollins University with an environmental science degree. In Florida, Eric was an environmental biologist with Turrell Hall and Associates, an engineering firm that permits and designs mega yacht marinas. Here in Southern Pines, Eric

O’Neal welcomes Anna and her husband, Eric, back home wishing them success in the Sandhills!

Admissions

Enrollment Referral Program for Parents

As a small way of saying “thank you” for the effort that parents make to bring new students to O’Neal, the Admissions Office gave an O’Neal Tervis Tumbler to those families that made a referral of a prospective family, which resulted in an enrollment for the 2011-12 academic year. Each family who made a referral of a student that enrolled was also entered into a $500 tuition credit drawing which was be given out at the school picnic in September. The Chavis family was the winner of the tuition credit drawing.

New Middle School Students

The enrollment referral program will continue for this year with the same time frame and offerings. So, O’Neal parents - be on the look out for new families to refer! Since the Chavis’ are former parents, the tuition credit was awarded to the Walters, whom they referred. Founders Return for Celebration

Tom and Nancy Howe, founding parents. Tom and

Nancy Howe have been dedicated to the success of O’Neal since the beginning. In honor of their hard work, the original school bell for the O’Neal was refurbished and dedicated to them during the Founders Day celebration. The bell is now situated between Bradshaw Hall and Meyer Hall where it will be incorporated into a future “Founders Garden”. As a new tradition, the bell is rung by students at 8:15am on Mondays to begin the school week and at 3:05pm on Fridays to end it.

On September 7, 1971, Wallace O’Neal Day School

opened, serving 35 students in 4th through 6th grades. After spending a few weeks at the Campbell House, the School moved to two mobile units nestled in a pine forest that was donated by the Meyer family off of Airport Road. On September, 7, 2011, The O’Neal School celebrated its 40th birthday and first annual Founders Day keeping its place among the pines, now as a five-building campus serving 430 students from Pre-K3 through 12th grade. Special guests for Founders Day were:

Bob Haarlow, the first headmaster for The Wallace

O’Neal Day School. Mr. Haarlow served as headmaster from 1971-1985. His children also attended O’Neal. Presently, he is the headmaster at Thomas Hart Academy in Hartsville, SC. To kick off the celebration, there was an all-school pep rally in the Hannah Center gymnasium. A “quiz bowl” was held where questions were asked about the beginning years of O’Neal as a creative way to introduce the attending O’Neal’s first headmaster, founders. Mr. Haarlow Bob Haarlow was running late to the event, but as luck may have it, he entered the gymnasium just in time to be introduced as an answer to one of the questions.

Fourth grade students, Andrew Roberson and Patrick McMurray ring the bell to start the week.

Heidi Hall Jones, daughter of Mary Elaine Meyer

O’Neal. Mrs. O’Neal donated the first 20 acres of land on Airport Road for the school to be built, with the stipulation that the school be named after her late husband, Wallace O’Neal. Later, her daughter Heidi, donated an additional 20 acres to complete the present 40 acre campus. The Meyer family owned the land in the area and had donated the land where Sandhills Community College is built. “It just seemed to her like a natural sequence to do something for that age group,” Jones said. “My mother was a largehearted person, and she had a soft spot for young people.” The Meyer family has continued to be strong supporters of The O’Neal School.

O’Neal named the front drive to Bradshaw Hall, Wallace O’Neal Way. A duplicate street sign was given to his step daughter, Heidi Hall Jones. 12

trustee and present O’Neal grandparent. Mr. Grady has been responsible for many achievements at O’Neal, but the most notable one will be bringing the School’s famous falcon sculpture to campus. With connections at the University of Miami, Mr. Grady commissioned the metal falcon to be fabricated by students. To save on expenses, Mr. Grady made a “round trip” drive to Miami and back to deliver the sculpture. Once standing in the front entrance of Taws Hall and Tate Gymnasium, the sculpture was refurbished and relocated to a more visible location on campus. On Founders Day, the falcon sculpture was dedicated to Durward Grady.

When the pep rally was finished, all of the students were dismissed (by the bell) and were invited to take one of many cupcakes on display in the Gutschmit Atrium. The attending founders were given tours and a luncheon to conclude the day. After 40 years, it would be hard to recognize everyone who was responsible for founding Wallace O’Neal Day School. Not all of the founders who were invited were able to attend, but O’Neal is thankful and appreciative to those who did come and participate in its first Founders Day celebration.

Jim Van Camp, founding parent and

trustee, second chairman of the Board of Trustees and present O’Neal grandparent. Jim Van Camp was charged with finding a school bus. At the Founders Day celebration, he told Did that group of parents who an interestwanted an independent school ing story of education for their children more purchasing Durward Grady at “Grady’s Falcon” than 40 years ago expect their via bus that was sion to become the shining star that it is today? Each division was given two buses to name and the suggestions have been submitted.

Alice Robbins. Mrs. Robbins was one

of O’Neal’s first teachers as well as a parent and she has been involved with O’Neal ever since! Through the years, Mrs. Robbins served as interim headmaster and more recently a member of the Board of Trustees.

Jim Miles. Mr. Miles started teaching at O’Neal in 1972. He later became director of the Lower School and last year was responsible for the School’s accreditation

A Chat with the Headmaster on Coming Home On a beautiful fall day in early November, I sat down with

O’Neal junior, Garrett Klumpar and senior, Abby Fuller. I wanted to get to know both of these students better and also listen to their experiences at other schools after leaving O’Neal. I wanted to know what they missed and what drew them back home. Alan Barr (AB): “How long were you at The O’Neal School (TOS)”? Garrett Klumpar (GK):Pre-K to 8th grade Abby Fuller (AF): 2nd grade to 8th grade AB: “What about O’Neal did you enjoy?” GK: “O’Neal is a very comfortable and open environment. I believed I could relate and talk to teachers outside the classroom. There is an esprit de corps with fellow classmates in sports and in classes. I knew just about everyone in the Middle School. My classmates and I were very close.” AF: “I really enjoyed being in a small community where everyone knows each other and accepts them. I also enjoyed the close relationship I had with my teachers. I could always stop and talk with them.” AB: “What was the transition like for you to go from TOS to your new school?” GK: “Phillips Exeter (PE) is a much bigger school with over a thousand students in grades 9-12. That was an adjustment; plus, I did not know anyone at first. I did not have a core group of people that I took all my classes with anymore. I had dorm mates who I am close to today but not classmates. I had a lot more freedom. I learned a great deal about time management and how to get my work done in a dorm environment. AF: “University School is a bigger school and that allows for more freedom and more activities for students. It is a very intense school compared to O’Neal. It is intense in academics, sports and the arts. Everyone is very serious about what they are doing in school.” AB: “What did you miss about TOS?” GK: “I missed the camaraderie of a class and the relationships I had with teachers. Because PE is so large it is difficult to get to know all your classmates and there is a large faculty so it is hard to form those close relationships.” AF: “I missed the whole school events that brought together all the grades and schools. I liked it when we got together as a community and celebrated or did fun things together like a pep rally.”

AB: “What did you enjoy at your new school that you did not experience at O’Neal?” GK: “I really enjoyed being on my own and making decisions for myself. I was able to truly discover myself and be comfortable with who I am in the world. I made some great friends because of the experiences we had living in dorms that you cannot develop in a day school.” AF: “The faculty at University School is top-notch. They are very smart and love what they are doing. I was able to establish great relationships with them. I am not saying that teachers at O’Neal are not smart or do not love what they do, it was that at University School, it was so obvious the moment you entered the room to the time you left at the end of the year.” AB: “What drew you back to TOS?” GK: “I realized that I just was not as happy as I thought I would be, nor was the experience as good as I thought. I really enjoy the sports at O’Neal. It is more comfortable here. I feel like I belong. I know what I want and it is to be back at O’Neal.” AF: “My dad lives here and I really want to be with him. I also heard that there are a lot of good things happening at O’Neal.” AB: “Besides the obvious, what are some unique differences between your last school and TOS?” GK: “O’Neal is much more relaxed but students still want to succeed. At PE students were working hard for the grade, not the knowledge. Students here seem to take enjoyment and are interested in the subject they are learning. They are learning for the sake of learning and not just to add another A to the GPA. At PE, every student was really, really good at something whether it was math, lacrosse, or the violin. It really opened my eyes to the number of really intelligent people out there. At O’Neal it is not all about the grades and competition. It is more about a quality of life. Students here are friendly to each other and do not see them as competitors.” AF: “University School has a lot of after school activities. I enjoyed theater club after school. I also took art classes that are very specific instead of just one class called “art”. There is definitely less of a competitive atmosphere here. Students are more respectful towards each other. They are more helpful with classmates.” AB: “So what is new at TOS?” GK: “Wow. There are a lot of new teachers but they are much like the ones I had at PE. It was a smooth transition coming back to O’Neal. It feels like I never left and I am glad I came back.” AF: “There is more freedom here for seniors. I do wish to see more community events with all the grades. It seems friendlier and more flexible and relaxed than before and I am thankful for that. It is good to be home again.” 16

Athletics Middle School Boys’ Soccer O’Neal wrapped up an undefeated season with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Village Christian, claiming their second straight middle school championship. The entire team played a phenomenal game, led by team captains William Schirmer and Martin Zigovsky. Every player contributed valuable minutes to the victory and the team played with tremendous sportsmanship throughout the season. In the final game, Brian Subin scored two goals for O’Neal, while Mason Sullivan and Kyle McClelland each added one.

losses. Our win was a 5-4 home victory over Fayetteville Academy. In this win every player on the team earned a victory in either singles or doubles. With some hard work in the off season these girls have a bright future on the tennis court.

Middle School Girls’ Volleyball The O’Neal middle school girls’ volleyball finished the conference tournament in second place to Village Christian Academy. Coach Field states, “It was indeed a very successful season with a record of 22-4! I’m proud of all 23 girls!!”

JV Volleyball The O’Neal JV Volleyball Team had a record of 10 and 9. The girls worked really hard this year to advance their abilities to the next level, which they did. As each individual player gained confidence the team concept became unstoppable. The freshman kept Coach Harper laughing and on her feet, while the sophomores became prime examples of team leaders. JV Girls’ Tennis The words used to describe this season were “rebuilding” and “young”. There were two new faces this year: Madison Greer and Emily McMurray. Varsity Volleyball The O’Neal varsity volleyball team had a rebuilding year with 10-12 overall record. This year the team was a mixture of girls from 5 seniors, 2 juniors, 2 sophomores, 2 freshmen and one 8th grader. Every game they played was a game of new experiences to put underneath their belts. The team played a hard schedule this year, but the girls always continued to work hard. The team had several girls that switched positions during the middle of the year. To any other team this would be a recipe for disaster, however, these girls rose to the challenge and did what was best for their team. “This was an enjoyable team to coach,”comments Coach Kendall Harper.

consecutive season, making it the first back-to-back state tournament appearance for a boys’ soccer team in 9 years. The future is very bright for this team! The team says goodbye to two seniors – Mark Bonville and Caleb Wood. Their presence will be missed next season, but this young team will continue to grow. JR Moore and Jacob Talbert earned All-Conference honors, and Ryan Williams was recognized as All-Conference Honorable Mention. All three players will be returning next season to see if the team can make it to its third state tournament appearance in as many years. Season highlights this year include big wins against Fayetteville Christian and Village Christian. Ian Baldwin stepped up as starting goalkeeper and played very well behind his talented back line of Gates Moore, Jacob Talbert, Mark Bonville, and Ryan Williams. JR Moore and Logan Butler took over much of the scoring duties this season with solid midfield play from Zack Eiserman, Jonah Saunders, Rick Catania, Stephen Stewart, and Dylan Andrews. The commitment and teamwork displayed by the entire team was fun to watch and will serve them well in the future.

Varsity Girls’ Tennis O’Neal girls’ varsity tennis took 7th place in NCISAA-2A tennis. The Cape Fear Independent Conference included one All Conference player in Greyson Keel and an honorable mention for Maggie Hakas. While the lady Falcons finshed the year 1-8, Coach Woodfield was pleased with the solid first round play in the State tournament.

Varsity Cross Country Varsity cross country teams started the year from a position of growth having added nearly 33% to the rosters from last year. Junior Savannah Merritt set a new second-place school record in the 5000m run with 21:50. At championship time the boys’ team secured a second place win as 2011 conference runner up and the girls team in third. Runners Austin Puleo, Alexander Waddell, and Savannah Merritt were recognized as all-conference runners. Austin Puleo and Savannah Merritt were also recognized as All-State runners for finishing in the top 11 runners in the state for the 2A division of NCISAA.

Varsity Boys’ Soccer The varsity boys’ soccer team entered the 2011 season with many unanswered questions after graduating 9 seniors the year before. Captains JR Moore, Jacob Talbert, and Logan Butler led this young team to a 4-5-1 conference finish in the toughest soccer conference in the state. The fourth place finish in the conference landed the team in the state tournament for the second 22
