Dear Members of the O’Neal Community, The first trimester of our school year is coming to an end and much is happening on our campus. Our students are enjoying our new drama and music programs and we look forward to Middle and Upper School productions in the theater this year. Lower School students are taking turns on stage and are performing for their fellow classmates. They are truly uninhibited! I hope you had an opportunity to attend our annual neighborhood chats where O’Neal parents and I had healthy, positive discussions about the direction of O’Neal. I hope that all of you have had the opportunity to visit our new website. All parents have a login to view important news, announcements, calendars and student academic information. I trust that parents have taken the opportunity to explore all that our website has to offer and they have used it to retrieve school information as needed. Also provided via the website is our ability to facilitate online giving. If you have not made your O’Neal Fund contribution this year, I encourage you to give it a try. In this edition of The O’Neal Magazine, you will read about our expansion of programming in the foreign language department involving student foreign exchange and study abroad. A detailed look at the new Pre-K3 program as well as a portfolio of the recent class trips are also featured. We are very thankful to all who contributed to O’Neal. Our annual report grows each year as we honor those who make a difference in the lives of our students. Congratulations to our middle school girls’ volleyball and boys’ soccer teams for their hard-earned conference wins. Dear O’Neal Community: It’s been a great start to the new school year and your Board of Trustees and I are working hard to continue the exceptional O’Neal educational experience. The Board operates through its various committees and encourages parental input. Our committees this year are Strategic Planning, Finance, Development and the Committee on Trustees. Each committee is diligently at work in their respective areas and you will hear from them in regard to strategic planning, solicitation of donations to sustain our curriculum and programs as well as in the search for new committee and Board members. If you have a particular interest in any of these areas, please do not hesitate to contact me. As you review the 2009-2010 Annual Report, included herein, take notice of the many members of our constituency who have contributed to our school. Our Board is eager to invite more of you who have found a place in your heart for O’Neal to participate in giving. We hope that you have seen the difference O’Neal has made in the lives of its past and present students. An O’Neal education makes an everlasting mark on those who receive it as O’Neal produces achievers and leaders who will and DO make a positive difference in the world in which we live. What started out as a Monte Carlo night, O’Neal’s 40th Annual Auction, Forty and Fabulous, will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 6pm at the Fair Barn in Pinehurst. Please mark your calendar and plan on attending our annual signature event that supports the operating budget of The O’Neal School. Your support is needed at many levels – as donors, attendees and volunteers. O’Neal’s history and past successes will be celebrated. The financial sponsors for the Auction are part of the Business Alliance program. Students in all divisions will get involved with the Auction this year as entertainers, invitation helpers and thank you note writers to O’Neal’s many donors. The Annual Auction could not happen without the support of the local business community as they support O’Neal with item donations solicited by Auction committee volunteers. There will be a Preview on Friday, February 4th from 9am12pm. Sweet Feed will cater breakfast and JT Davenport of Sanford will underwrite the event. Guests will get to bid on all the auction items before the big event and Lower School students will perform!! Jewelry raffle and $10,000 Cash Raffle tickets will be sold. On Saturday evening the festivities kick into high gear. Over 300 silent auction items will be up for bid ranging from rugs to jewelry to golf and student-created art. There is a live auction with items such as trips, beach houses and one-of-a-kind experiences. This is an elegant evening with a full host bar and a tapas dinner catered by Elliotts on Linden.

Alumni Notes 1980 Benjamin LeFever graduated from The Citadel in 1985 with a BA in history and Campbell University in 1988 with a law degree. He is a self-employed attorney in Fayetteville and has an 18 year old daughter, Lisa, who is a freshman at UNC majoring in journalism and an 11 year old daughter, Eva.

1995 Elaine Bradbury Passman and her husband, Corey, have a two year old daughter, Katie. Elaine was accepted to Sewanee (The University of the South) during her junior year at O’Neal and spent her senior year in France. She received a degree in economics. She was in corporate banking and finance for ten years and now stays home with Katie. Elaine met Corey at Sewanee and they moved to Lynchburg, VA two years ago when Corey joined a urology practice after being at the University of Alabama Birmingham for medical school and his residency and at Wake Forest for his fellowship.

1983 Elizabeth Granger Tait lives in Wilmington with her husband, Burt, and their six year old daughter, Cameron, who is a first grader at Cape Fear Academy. Elizabeth graduated from NCSU with a BS in business management and Burt graduated from Hampden Sydney College with a BA in economics. Burt is a general contractor and Elizabeth is a stay at home mom for Cameron. They met while working for a commercial real estate firm in Raleigh. 1985 Quinten Van Camp lives in Tasmania, Australia with her husband Willem Van Den Broek and their two and an half year old daughter, Bailey. She and her husband own a restaurant/bar. Quinten attended UNCW after O’Neal and transferred to Springfield College in Massachusetts where she earned a degree in psychology. She worked in mental health until she and her sister, Ashley, opened Ashten’s Restaurant in Southern Pines in 1997. Quinten and Willem met in Aspen, Colorado where he was visiting his sister and she was managing a restaurant at The St. Regis. Quinten is now a dual citizen of Australia and the United States. She and Willem hope to move back to the US in the future.

1999 Connie Fleming Wright and her husband, Andrew, had a baby girl on September 30th. They named her Sidney Fleming Wright. She weighed in at 7lbs. 15oz. and was 20 inches long. Mom, dad and baby are getting to know each other and O’Neal wishes them well!

2000 Shelley Rainey Keith lives in Winterville with her husband Taylor and Taylor’s son Terry (4) and their daughter, Rainey Grace (2). She was a Kindergarten teacher but now is a stay-athome mom. Taylor works for the NCDOT and owns a small real estate company.

1990 Chris Kruse is married to Ashley and they live in Rye, NH. He is the northeast territory sales manager for NCR Corporation. He graduated from Elon University in 1995 with a bachelor of arts degree. Chris’ wife, Ashley, graduated from Kent Denver School in 1999 and Vanderbilt University in 1999. They had a baby girl, Campbell Elizabeth, on July 30th. We wish the new family well!!

Alumni Notes 2001 Justin Carr married Stephanie Van Eron on May 1st at St. Mark Catholic Church in Wilmington with a reception at the City Club. Stephanie is a bank teller at SunTrust Bank in Fuquay-Varina and has a degree from Cape Fear Community College. Justin and Stephanie met at Dockside, a restaurant on the Intercoastal Waterway where Justin worked as a cook. He graduated from UNCW in December 2005 with a BA in criminal justice and a minor in sociology, but found his calling cooking so he worked several years as a chef at Dockside and Rafaella’s before returning to school for post-graduate studies at Johnson & Wales Culinary Institute in Charlotte. He now works as a chef at Fearrington House Restaurant in Pittsboro. Justin and Stephanie live in Cary.

Assisted Living called “Mentally Sharp at Any Age” which consisted of mental and physical exercises to delay the onset and/or progression of Alzheimer’s. Brandon plans on attending medical school in the fall of 2012 but has not decided on a particular school yet. Kelsey Bartiss attended The College of William and Mary and earned a BA in anthropology and a minor in art and art history in May. At W&M she was involved with Circle K International, the equestrian club, W&M heritage dancers and worked in the main campus library. Presently, she is an ophthalmic assistant with Family Eye Care of the Carolinas and plans to apply for graduate school, studying library and information science, to begin in the fall of 2011. Kelsey is the School’s O’Neal Fund Alumni Co-Chair for 2010-2011. Seana Catherman graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in May with a BS in biotechnology and she’s now a laboratory technician in the Allergy, Immunology and Rheumatology department at the University of Rochester. In the lab they are trying to set up an antibody cloning library for different diseases (mostly Lupus and HIV) with the goal being to have the antibodies stored for use in later projects and possibly commercializing the process to allow for the sale of the antibodies to other labs. She plans to take graduate classes next fall, working towards her PhD in genetics or cancer biology. Seana lives in Rush, NY.

Jennifer Ferrell lives in Raleigh and works at the Durham Performing Arts Center as the ticket supervisor. She graduated from Clemson University in 2005 with a degree in communications and sports management and was a photographer at Disney World before returning to Raleigh. 2004 Brandon Thompson has recently taken the position of JV boy’s basketball head coach and varsity boy’s basketball assistant head coach. Welcome back, Brandon!!

Kat Davis is now a first grade teacher at Thales Academy in Apex after receiving a BS in elementary education from North Carolina State University in May. She is engaged to Chris Hooks and a June 2011 wedding is planned. Kat met Chris while working with the Carolina Hurricanes. Chris is from Mebane and graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Communications, Electronic Media and Broadcasting. He is the “Voice of the Eagles” for North Carolina Central University. He broadcasts all of the sports games and travels the country. Kat lives in Raleigh.

Emily Troutman is living in Paris and attending the Sorbonne. She is taking eight classes this semester in French literature in pursuit of her master’s degree after majoring in French at the College of Charleston. For the past two years she was in northern France teaching English (one year in an elementary school and one in a high school) and has moved to Paris to study and be an au pair for a family with three young children. 2006 Brandon Allen is currently pursuing his doctorate in pharmacy at the South Carolina College of Pharmacy - USC. He will graduate with a PharmD in May 2012. He is the president of the National Community Pharmacists Association and works for Hawthorne Laurel Pharmacy, an independent drug store in Columbia, SC as an intern. In the summer of 2010 he was involved with the South Carolina Rural Interprofessional Training (SCRIPT) program in Oconee County and implemented a program at Lakeview

John Harrison graduated from Wake Forest University in May with a BA in both history and political science. He is a member of Phi Alpha Theta, an American honor society for undergraduate and graduate students and professors of history. He is currently a law student at Elon University’s School of Law in Greensboro. 9

Alumni Notes Kate King graduated in May from UNC with a BS in business administration and a minor in Spanish. She is currently at Campbell University School of Law and lives in Raleigh. Preston Puleo was on the dean’s list and participated in varsity crew at Cornell University. He graduated in May 2010 with a bachelor of science degree from Cornell. Danielle Turk graduated from Penn State University with a BS in neuroscience and a minor in kinesiology. She is taking graduate classes at Villanova University and works in a clinical research lab at the University of Pennsylvania analyzing MRI imaging and lumbar spine abnormalities. She plans to apply to medical school or physician’s assistant school in the near future. She lives outside of Philadelphia, PA. Jack Ulrich graduated from Furman University in May with a BA in history. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and the Furman golf team which won the 2010 Southern Conference championship. After playing golf at Furman, he is pursuing his love for the game as a product specialist with PING. He lives in Peoria, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. Stephanie White will graduate from North Carolina State University in May with a BA in communication with a concentration in media and a double minor in journalism and biology. While going to State, she has been a member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She is currently a marketing assistant with Thompson Financial Group where she has been able to organize and plan events for people in the Triangle area to enjoy. Once she graduates, she will pursue a career as a physician’s assistant. 2009 Katie Maness is a sophomore at NCSU majoring in communication with a concentration in public relations and plans to double major with English or psychology with a minor in Spanish. She was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester. Katie is a member of Delta Gamma and volunteers for the NC Library for the Blind, American Diabetes Association, and Brighton Gardens. As a First Year College Student Ambassador, Katie leads tours to newly admitted or potential students to educate them about NCSU. She writes for the school newspaper, The Technician, and is a member of the English Club.

two honors classes each semester and access to new opportunities, advisors and scheduling options while maintaining a 3.0 GPA. Amanda Rubenstein works for Tarheel Canine Training, Inc. in Sanford as a full-time police canine trainer and instructor. She began working in the kennels taking care of the animals as a way to make money before starting at NC State. She fell in love with the training aspect and began as an intern. They train police dogs for narcotics and explosives detection, cadaver recovery, search and rescue as well as patrol and personal protection. Besides training the dogs, Amanda also trains police officers on how to properly handle and work with their dogs on the street and she trains civilian dog trainers as well. Her specialty is “bomb dogs” and her personal dog is certified in explosives detection. When the car bomb went off in Times Square in May, she was hired by a private company to search the Marriott Marquis and part of Times Square with her bomb sniffing dog. Amanda took an opportunity this summer to conduct some training at O’Neal’s Upper School. 2010 Blair Puleo is a freshman at UNC – Chapel Hill. In early October she won the Miss Moore County 2011 competition held at Sandhills Community College. In addition to the Miss Moore County title, Blair received the community service award for her work with “Helping Hands” as well as the scholar and talent awards. She will represent Moore County in the Miss North Carolina pageant next June. Congratulations to Blair!!

O’Neal Homecoming and Alumni Social

Enjoy The O’Neal School’s Homecoming basketball games on Friday, January 7th against Fayetteville Academy in the gymnasium of the Activities Center. Everyone will get a seat in the new gym!! Homecoming will be the culminating event for Spirit Week, a week of funny clothes and pep rallies. The Booster Club will host a pre-game dinner in the dining commons from 4:00-6:00pm with the boys’ JV basketball game beginning at 4:00pm, the girls’ varsity game at 5:30pm and the boys’ varsity game at 7:00pm. The crowning of the Homecoming Queen will follow the basketball game. Please come out and support the Falcons as they play Fayetteville Academy. After the game, the Alumni Office will host our 2nd Annual Alumni Social at Pine Needles – details will be mailed and emailed to you. Join us for an evening with other alumni, O’Neal faculty and administration.

The Class of 2000 is having a reunion on Saturday, November 27th. The Alumni Office is hosting a Family Breakfast and Campus Tour on Sunday, November 28th from 9:3011am for all Class of 2000 alumni, their spouses, children and parents. 4th Annual Alumni Day

Visit O’Neal on Wednesday, January 5th for the 4th Annual Alumni Day. Post graduates are invited to have lunch and a round-table discussion with the O’Neal seniors and alumni will share their college experiences. The lunch will occur in the atrium of the Activities Center and the discussion will take place in theater. After lunch, the alumni can tour the newly expanded campus and visit with faculty and friends. At 5pm alumni will play O’Neal’s varsity basketball team in the new gymnasium. Come to play or cheer on the alumni.

Did you know…? + O’Neal’s 45 graduating seniors were accepted to 52 different schools across the country – and across the world when including the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Total scholarships earned by this class were $1.2 million. + Two of O’Neal’s juniors kicked off the School’s foreign exchange program this summer with an intense study of the Spanish language in Vigo, Spain where they were also able to experience the country’s celebration of winning the World Cup in soccer. + Leadership opportunities have expanded as five of O’Neal’s rising seniors were selected to launch a new prefect program, climbed 1200 feet up to Trail Rider Pass, and began planning activities to involve the entire student body in service projects, student life, academic tutoring, admissions and communications. + Michael Norman and the Upper School students will perform “The Murder Room”, a murder mystery farce, this spring. + 48 7th and 8th grade students are taking the new drama class taught by Alison Chernin and O’Neal senior, Seth Edmonds, as the teacher’s assistant. + Mr. Norman and Mrs. Chernin are exploring a dinner theater event this fall combining Middle and Upper School performers. + 65 5th and 6th grade students participated in a new intramural program including soccer, volleyball, and basketball allowing for social interaction as well as the experience of playing as part of a team. + 18 Middle School students have joined the new Science Olympiad team which is an Olympics style education contest meeting weekly after school and then participating in a regional competition in the spring. + 75 Lower School students happily participated in after-school clubs ranging from yoga to the science club, Above: Attendees enjoyed the O’Neal Fund Donor Let’s Get Messy. + Two teams of 4th graders will participate in the international educational program, Odyssey of the Mind, this year which provides creative problem solving opportunities for team members. Enrollment Referral Program for Parents

As a small way of saying “thank you” for the effort that parents make to bring new students to O’Neal, the Admissions Office gave an O’Neal Tervis Tumbler to those families that made a referral of a prospective family, which resulted in an enrollment for the 2010-11 academic year. The Winter’s won the enrollment referral program drawing for a $500 tuition credit. They referred the Woolley family. Each family who made a referral of a student that enrolled was also entered into a $500 tuition credit drawing which was be given out at the school picnic in September. The Winter family was the winner of the drawing. The enrollment refferal program will continue for this year with the same time frame and offerings. So, O’Neal parents - be on the look out for new families to refer!

ule: noon was breakfast, 3:30pm was lunch and 10:30pm was supper. “The people have an easy going nature,” says Summer. “They loved life. I was a lot more relaxed in Vigo. In coming back home, the stringent schedule and ‘have to’s’ were waiting for me.”

Foreign Exchange

Alex is thinking of pursuing teaching at the high school or college level. Summer is considering International Business. They both felt this program to be an unforgettable experience and an opportunity to make life long friends. “I got SKYPE on my computer so that I can continue to talk with my host family,” exclaims Summer. “It was a great experience,” says Alex. “It has changed me.”

When Richard Catania began working as assistant Up-

per School director on July 1st, the wheels were in motion for foreign exchange to take shape at O’Neal. Already on the burner were two rising O’Neal seniors on their way to Vigo, Spain for a one-month stay. With 27 years of experience in student foreign exchange, Mr. Catania has set specific objectives for O’Neal. “O’Neal students are serious about learning the languages,” says Catania. “There is a huge demand for this at O’Neal –parents, students and faculty members are very excited about students being fluent in other languages.”

This type of program is a way to promote a new way of traveling as an explorer and not as a tourist,” says Catania. “ When you immerse yourself in another way of life, you learn a new way of thinking – as Mark Twain expressed -… ‘a charitable view of man and things’.” New to O’Neal are junior students: Pedro Puelles Gil from Vigo, Spain and Theresa Berg from Niederkrüchten, Germany. Here for the school year, Pedro is living with Holly and Carty Davis, parents of Brandt (12th grade), Madelyn (10th grade) and Piper (8th grade). Theresa is living with Marina and Randy Craven. Randy is a past parent of 2010 graduate Emma Craven.

To start the ball rolling, the foreign exchange program that Mr. Catania has been associated with for many years, awarded two $5,000 scholarships for one month’s study abroad. Summer Barmore and Alex Averbook were the recipients. Immersed in everyday living, Summer and Alex each lived with a Vigo family and underwent intensive study of the Spanish language. “Everyone spoke a lot faster and it was very intimidating,” remarks Summer. “ I grew unafraid of making mistakes. Being corrected when I said something the wrong way was how I learned.”

A Closer Look at Class

Trips

Class Trips! Middle and Upper School students anticipate the traditional September week every year. These overnight journeys to destinations along the East Coast may last from three to five days, depending on the grade. Is their a purpose? Yes. • Six weeks after school starts, the class trips give students and their teachers the opportunity to get to know each other and to form a healthy relationship to last the rest of the school year. • For many students, the class trips provide an opportunity to be taken out of one’s “comfort zone” and find self accomplishment. For the lower grades, it could be the first time a student has spent more than one day away from their parents. For many of the trips, students participate in ropes courses and other challenging activities that push individuals physically and mentally to accomplish a given task.

Fifth grade students travel to Betsy-Jeff Penn 4H Camp in Reidsville, NC to learn the concept of geocaching. Geocaching involves receiving a set of map coordinates and then using a GPS and a topographical map to find the treasure.

The eighth grade students experience Washington DC and the surrounding area seeing firsthand evidence of our nation’s history. This trip complements their study of civics including the principles and structure of American Democracy.

Sixth grade students travel to Pine Knoll Shores, NC to participate in the “Sound to Sea” proSeventh grade students travel to Camp gram. • Many of the trips provide hands-on learning that relate to topics taught in the classroom. • The way in which these trips are coordinated allows for students to see and learn from an exploratory viewpoint and not that of a tourist. Not to say that the students are not tourists in the middle of downtown Washington DC or Charleston, but their itinerary is designed to make the trip as interactive and awe inspiring as possible. • The trips allow for character development and acknowledgement of each and every student as they show their personality within their class and establish their method of interaction. The freshmen conquer the ropes course and take in white water rafting and hiking at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Pisgah Forest, NC.

• A voyage with friends to an interesting place is fun! No matter the purpose, this O’Neal tradition remains steadfast and positive for its students.

Seniors spend a few days at Nantahala to take in some white water rafting and just plain fun. They return early in the week to renovate their senior room in the student center and accomplish other “senior” duties.

The morning starts with circle time where they review the calendar, say the pledge of allegiance, sing a song and participate in activities such as “finger play” and “read aloud” exercises. Then the students move on to learning centers and teacher-directed activities. During this time, Mrs. Vest works one-on-one with students to learn skills such as letter recognition, cutting, sequencing and patterns. Miss Spruill often conducts games that involve more than one student, such as alphabet matching and number set matching. Often times, a cooking activity happens in the morning and it is almost always associated with letter recognition. For instance, when studying the letter “P”, they cooked a pizza. O’Neal’s librarian, Lynn Bowness visits the classroom once a week to read a story. The elementary art teacher, Patty Amato also conducts an art class for them on a weekly basis. In December, the students will participate in a weekly music class with music teacher, June Infantino.

Welcome Pre-K3! A full class of thirteen students for O’Neal’s new Pre-K3

class, keeps instructor, Penny Vest and her assistant, Kelly Spruill hopping. “I love this age”, exclaims Mrs. Vest. As she talks during “free play time,” three girls take turns sitting on her lap. “I have to keep things interesting and that means making new materials often and I like doing that.” When the opportunity was presented last year, Mrs. Vest jumped at it. Her Montessori training, in addition to her early childhood education and certifications, provided a great fit for the position. Both Pre-K3 and Pre-K4 classes are structured to give parents options on how long they want their children to

After snack time and a restroom break, it’s on to recess! “I like to let the children decide how they want to play,” says Mrs. Vest. “They want to have time with friends, but they also want time alone.” The sandbox swings and toys are popular items.

When recess is finished, it’s another hour of learning before noon arrives. 20

School ends for most of the Pre-K3 students at this time. However, depending on the day, 4 to 6 students stay on until 3:15pm – where Mrs. Vest’s classroom becomes an afternoon care center and they have lunch, story time, rest time, free play centers and outside play. The free play centers include activities such as puzzles, home living, manipulatives, reading and art. “Our son, Max, loves going to preschool at O’Neal,” comments O’Neal parent, Susan Pashley. “He wakes up every day asking if it is a school day, and when I confirm that it is, he yells ‘Yahoo!’ and grabs his backpack. Mrs. Vest is fantastic, and I know that Max is in great hands with teachers and staff who really care about him and his development.” Working together with playdough.

Based on the Core Knowledge Level I curriculum, the activities conducted throughout the day provide a focus on social skills enabling a young child to function independently with the social setting of the class group. Work habits are also addressed by gently guiding the students to develop a methodology for approaching different activities. This establishes a foundation for the manner in which the children will later approach academic work in kindergarten and beyond. Students learn how to understand and use spoken language through the development of basic conversational skills such as clearly communicating one’s needs or understanding or giving a verbal description of a person, object or experience. For developing fine motor skills, an art project is conducted almost daily. Ongoing daily observations and informal assessments of each child’s progress and frequent communication with the Pre-K4 teachers help Mrs. Vest prepare the three year olds for the next school year.

O’Neal had a strong showing and a full game schedule for all of its teams this fall season. The middle school girls’ volleyball and boys’ soccer teams both pulled out conference championships. The middle school volleyball team finished their season with a conference championship win in the SEAMAC Tournament held Friday, October 22, 2010 at Village Christian School in Fayetteville. The team finished the season with a conference record of 17- 3 and an overall record of 24- 4. O’Neal entered the tournament in second place behind Village Christian. Confidence was high, after crushing Village’s undefeated streak a week earlier with a 2-0 win at O’Neal. The team won the first two games, 25 - 22 and 25 - 18. Scotti McGowan and Sarah D’Annunzio received AllTournament Honors and Taylor Shelton received Tournament MVP.

up of 7 eighth graders and 18 seventh graders who worked hard throughout the season to continually improve and stay a step ahead of their opponents. Captains Austin Gibbons and Matthew LaVigne provided strong leadership day in and day out and helped set a great example of sportsmanship during each game. The team had three players who made the All-Tournament team, including Matthew LaVigne, Andrew Hassenfelt, and Brian Subin, as well as the Tournament MVP, Mason Sullivan.

Coached by Beth Field, this year’s team consisted of 21 players. The season was highlighted with strong, consistent performances by eighth graders Taylor Shelton, Scotti McGowan, Tessa Candiotti, and seventh graders Ellen Tafoya and Hannah Sullivan.

It was a wonderful season with a great group of girls. Their hard work, enthusiasm, and love of the game was evident. The team received the nicest compliment from the Liberty coach after beating them in the second round, eliminating them from the tournament. Their coach said our girls showed class and character by the way they played and handled themselves on and off the court after they won. Special thanks to Coach Kendall Harper for her instruction, guidance and support throughout the season. The middle school soccer team had a fantastic season, finishing with a 12-1 record and the conference championship after a 2-0 victory over Village Christian in the finals. Coached by David Williamson, the team of 25 was made

The varsity girls tennis team has won second place in the CFIC conference with an overall 11-4 record. Coach Don Woodfield praised the play of his team during the regular season. Their only losses were to Cape Fear Academy and Westchester Country Day School, two of the top teams in the state. Two players, Brianna Ek and Amelia Schirmer also received All-Conference awards with Mary Garner and Victoria Scarpa getting Honorable Mentions. Coach Woodfield was selected as Coach of the Year in the CFIC Conference. The team tied for 7th place in the state tournament(NCISAA). The varsity boys’ soccer team wrapped up a terrific season in which they finished 3rd in the Cape Fear Independent Conference. They were seeded 10th in the state playoffs, only to fall to #7 seated Cape fear Academy in the first round game. The state playoff game was the first in many years. 23

It was also a game which O’Neal held a lead and was tied until the closing minutes of the game. The team exceeded expectations this season, and played some great soccer along the way. The season highlights include beating Cape Fear Academy 2-0 during the regular season, beating Carolina Friends 3-1, playing the #1 ranked 1A public school team in the state to a tie until conceding a goal with less than 2 minutes remaining, and beating Fayetteville Christian the last game of the regular season while missing 5 key players. The improved play of the soccer team caught the eye of other coaches in the conference, who voted John Roger Moore (9th grade), Jacob Talbert (10th grade), and Colin Jameson (12th grade) to the All-Conference team. In addition, Bryce Baldelli (12th grade) and Dylan Gehle (12th grade) made All-Conference Honorable Mention. This great season would not have been possible without Coach Ted Hassenfelt and the leadership of the nine seniors – Matthew Freison, Thomas Griffin, Dylan Gehle, David Letteney, Stephen Chamberlain, Charlie Thompson, Brandt Davis, Colin Jameson, and Bryce Baldelli. Bryce Baldelli, Stephen Camberlain, Brandt Davis, and Colin Jameson all shared captain duties this season. The seniors worked hard to make this a special season, and laid the groundwork for the soccer program for the future.

new awards being taken up. Coached by Josh Roberts, O’Neal runners took top-ten medals at the Carolina Classic, Jeremy Gaines Invitational, and Moore County Middle School Championship this year. Juniors Alana Godbey and Theresa Berg set new school records at 5th (22:11) and 2nd (21:51) respectively. This year O’Neal also hosted the Cape Fear Independent Conference Championship. The boys’ and girls’ teams placed third of four and saw runners Theresa Berg, Alana Godbey, Austin Puleo, Evan Davies, and Ian Maynor qualify as All-Conference runners. The boys placed 12th and the girls placed 16th. The JV girls’ tennis team had a great season, finishing with an overall record of 5 wins and 3 losses and a conference record of 5 wins and 2 losses. Coached by Shane Moubry, this was a very young and talented team consisting of 7 eighth graders and 2 tenth graders. The highlight of the season was a win over Cape Fear Academy, winning 7 out of the 12 matches. All the girls showed great improvement throughout the year and will continue to play in the off season. The O’Neal tennis program, as a whole, has a bright future starting with this great group of girls.

The varsity volleyball team had a rebuilding year with only two returnees from last year’s team, Kellyann Miller and Katie Tighe. Other team members included Heather Dyer, Quinn Griffin, Ginny Wollens, Katie Dyer, Tory Fedder, Jackie Chamberlain, Maeve Bartiss, Claire Russell, and Katelyn Hunt. Coached by Kendall Harper, the team improved each week through hard work and good communication. We played a very competitive schedule. This made the team bond quickly and overcome their hurdles. The girls were a joy to coach. They always wanted to stay after practice to work on specifics and the harder the drill was in practice the more they loved it. Kellyann Miller received All Conference Player and Katie Tighe received Honorable Mention.

The JV girls’ volleyball team finished the year with a 4-9 record. From day one the girls came ready to practice and play. They improved each phase of their game. The improvement was evident in the games played against some of the stronger conference opponents resulting in deep game scores. Sophomores Teresa Griffin, Savannah Merritt, Leah Samaras, Colleen Tafoya and Kaleigh Teschendorf did a great job of leading the team. Best wishes to them as they move onto to the varsity program next year. Freshmen, Mary Dixon, Mary Winston Dozier, Kelly Griffin, Emily Summers and Aubrey Thompson worked hard to make the adjustment from middle school to junior varsity level. Coach Steve Dahl looks forward to their return and continued improvement to the game.
