Creative Writing (FETAC Level 5 ) l

Course Details: This course is designed to give students an opportunity to develop their creative voice through writing. It aims to give students an understanding of the process of writing, key aspects of writing fiction, as well as the possibility of getting work published. This FETAC accredited, distance learning course means that students can study flexibly at home, or at work, while gaining an internationally accredited Qualification.

Topics covered include: Unit 1: Writing Skills Unit 2: Characterisation Unit 3: Structure and Plot Development Unit 4: Setting and Atmosphere Unit 5: Getting published.

Learners who successfully complete this module will: 4

Develop their creative voice through writing Produce a range of confident writing, which will include the opening section of a novel or two complete short stories 4 Have utilised key aspects of writing for a novel or short story 4 Understand the process of publication in Ireland 4 Be able to submit work for publication. 4 Specific Learning Outcomes 4

Feature Writing for Print (FETAC Level 6 ) l

Course Details: This journalism course is designed to provide thorough training in all aspects of journalist features writing. It is also intended that students will submit features in a freelance journalist capacity. The course covers aspects such as: news features, profiles, specialist features (such as film and music reviews) and consumer features.

Assessment: This course is assessed through work assignments. This will require students to write a news feature article, a profile of a prominent Irish figure or organisation and a feature article on a specialist area / consumer feature. 2

News Writing for Print (FETAC Level 6 ) l

Course Details: This is a comprehensive journalism course which provides students with all the skills and techniques required to source and write news stories for print. It covers various aspects, for example: how and where to source news stories, how to writer and make an impact, how to utilise different styles to meet the requirements of the paper you are writing for, how to execute court, financial and incident reporting. Students receive a course manual, assignments, an efficient studyguide, plus unlimited one-to-one tutor support for the duration of the course.

Who should complete this course? l

People who wish to pursue a career as a Journalist or News Reporter. l Existing news reporters who wish to gain an accredited qualification. l People who wish to write for newspapers, journals and periodicals. l Anyone considering professional writing - including books, magazine features and short stories and wish to learn news reporting techniques.

Progression to further Studies: l

This course leads to a level 6 award on the National Framework of Qualifications. l Students who successfully complete this programme may use this Level 6 credit towards the FETAC Advanced Certificate in Media Production programme (Ref. EMPRO).

Assessment l

This course is assessed through a collection of work. This will require students to write a tabloid news story, a broadsheet news story, a court report, an incident report and a financial report.

Students who wish to achieve a FETAC credit in Print Journalism 5 l Students who wish to complete the FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Media Production.

Learners who successfully complete this course will: 4

acquire the ability to write in different registers be able to edit and layout newspaper pages 4 undertake research on a given topic 4 demonstrate an understanding of political and social affairs both national and international. 4
