COOLERS Think summer, think cooling refreshing drinks! After all, what better way to keep yourself cool when the temperatures are soaring, the sun is shining, your skin is burning, sweat is pouring and your throat is parched? Here are some of our favourites! BUTTERMILK Known as chaas/matha/majjige in different parts of the country, this is one of the most popular summer coolers. The simplest variant is curd blended with ice cubes/water spiced with a bit of salt to make a refreshing drink. You can spice it with ginger, green chillies, chopped coriander and even add a tempering of mustard seeds. TENDER COCONUT WATER Who doesn’t love tender coconut water or elaneeru? Cooling and restorative at the same time, the perfect way to enjoy it is to drink it straight from the coconut (don’t forget to use an eco-friendly straw!). It is rich in electrolytes, making it perfect to prevent dehydration in the summer heat. PANAKA A Ram Navami staple, panaka is made using jaggery, cardamon, ginger, tulsi leaves, lemon, a touch of salt – all mixed with cold water. KOKUM JUICE The Kokum fruit (Malabar Tamarind), native to the Western Ghats, has several therapeutic properties. The dried skin of the fruit is
soaked, the resultant syrup is mixed with water and sugar or jaggery – what you get is bright red kokum juice, which is refreshing as well as digestive! NIMBU PANI The simplest and tastiest way to make this cooling drink is to squeeze a few lemons, add rock salt, a bit of mint, mix with cold water and enjoy! Delicious, invigorating and a summer-must have! AAM PANNA A summer favorite! Raw mangoes are either boiled or roasted on an open flame. The pulp is then removed, jaggery, cardamom powder, pepper, salt and cumin powder are added. The concentrate is then used as required, mixed with water to make refreshing and digestive Aam Panna! NANNARI SHERBET Known as Anamtamula in Kannada, the roots of the herb Sarasaparilla, more commonly known as Nannari are used to make a syrup, which is mixed with jaggery or palm sugar and a bit of lime juice. Mixed with cold water, it helps to keep you cool and refreshed!
5 DISHES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR
SUMMER What do you love eating during summer? Light, fresh and flavourful dishes made with seasonal ingredients that are cooling are the norm. Here are some of our favourite summer dishes!
WATERMELON AND FETA SALAD You can’t get more light, flavourful and fresh than this dish! Chunks of watermelon are tossed lightly with feta cheese – the sweetness of the firm, juicy fruit offering the perfect foil to the sharp taste of crumbly feta. Season with salt, coarsely ground pepper, balsamic vinegar, a dash of lemon juice for a pinch of acidity and you have a crowd pleaser on your hands. You could also toss in some basil leaves as well as rocket for added flavour and texture. MOR KOZHAMBU A delicately spiced curry with curd as its base is just what a hot summer’s day calls for. A dish from Tamil Nadu, a paste of coconut, cumin seeds, green chillies and ginger is mixed with curd and light cooked. Add cooked vegetables such as lady’s finger, or bottle gourd or white pumpkin, temper with mustard seeds, curry leaves and red chillies and this refreshing curry is ready! LASSI What better way to cool yourself down with a glass of chilled lassi? Thick curd is mixed with water and if you like it sweet, add some jaggery, top with dry fruits, cardamom powder and your sweet lassi is ready. KULFI Especially popular during summers, Kulfi is a traditional Indian dessert made with milk, cardamon, a sweetener like sugar or jaggery and nuts. Milk is boiled till it thickens, it is mixed with cornflour, sugar, dry fruits and cooked till it really thickens. It is then placed in steel moulds and frozen to result in a creamy, sweet, cold treat! RICE – KHICHDI AND CURD RICE Khichdi is an ideal summer dish because it is easily digestible and yet a one pot meal. Rice is cooked with moong or masoor dal and vegetables of your choice, salt and turmeric powder and tempered with cumin and mustard seeds, onions, and chillies. And we just can’t get enough of curd rice – rice mixed with salt, curd and a tempering of urad dal, red chillies, curry leaves and red chillies. You can even add fruits like pomegranate or grapes. Light, wholesome and so delicious!
NOT
in our beverages It’s summertime and the temperatures are rising! Time to hit the juices and the other cooling drinks that prevent us from getting dehydrated!
But wait – have you ever read what goes into the juice or carbonated drink that you are picking off the shelves of your supermarket? Chances are you will see the following ingredients: High Fructose Corn syrup, a sweetener made from corn Sodium Benzoate, used as a pre servative in carbonated drinks Artificial flavorings Brominated Vegetable Oil, which helps in emulsifying the oils in citrus flavored soft drinks
And did you know that studies have suggested that ALL these chemicals could lead to long term health problems? High Fructose Corn Syrup , for ex- ample, has been linked with inflammation, while BVO can be harmful for the liver.
At The Organic World, we have cut through the chatter. You won’t find carbonated drinks on our shelves. Nor will you find any beverages contain- ing the above ingredients. Because we want to give you better choices to lead a better life.

UMA SHANKAR
Uma Shankar, is the Founder and Director at a HR and Finance company. She loves Carnatic music, traveling and homemade good food! She lives in Thane but spends a good amount of her time in Bangalore and when here, she is a regular at The Organic World, Malleshwaram. TOW: How was it like shopping at TOW? UMA SHANKAR: Generally we make a list of things we need in the kitchen. I was living in Thane and I came to Bengaluru, (in Malleshwaram) in August 2020. And I was very happy to see the The Organic World store walking distance from where I lived. I used to go there with my list and shop. The staff was very helpful and they started delivering home as well. They became very friendly – they would call and inform me when fresh fruits and vegetables had arrived – I would tell them what to deliver and it would be done. And if the vegetables were not fresh, they would tell me when the fresh stock was coming. I was very happy with the service! TOW: What did you like buying at The Organic World? US: We would buy hand pounded red rice in large quantities – it was really good. As
were the dals and spices and the horsegram chutney became a family favourite. We would buy most of our fruits and vegetables there as well – I especially liked their broccoli and kaccha kela. I really trusted their products. The Swaha brand agarbatti was fantastic as were their puja items. I am missing all this in Thane now! TOW: What did you enjoy the most at The Organic World? US: The staff were really friendly and helpful. I remember during Christmas they received some cake and a staff member recommended I buy it. It was so good and fresh! So for the next five days we kept buying that! I would take my one-year-old granddaughter for a walk in the mornings and we would cross the store. She started pointing it out to me, so I would take her in as well! The staff would speak so nicely to her. I really enjoyed the display and range of items as well – I hope they open in Thane soon!
SUMMER
ARE TI C N I PS K S
Temperatures are rising, the sun is shining… this can only mean one thing – summer is here! And this is a season that can take a toll on any skin type – the pollution, humidity etc all affect the quality of skin and can lead to infection as well. Oily skin gets oilier and dry skin conditions can worsen. Here are a few skincare tips that can keep your skin (and you!) cool through the heat.
EXFOLIATE! Regular exfoliation is a must to keep your skin clean and prevent breakouts. Use gentle products. Not harsh scrubs on your face any body around a couple of times a week. You can use ingredients from your kitchen like oats, besan, turmeric, egg white basil, rose water, multani etc or buy natural and organic scrubs with similar ingredients. Native Circle Moisturizing Face Scrub, Organic Harvest Anti Tan Scrub MODIFY YOUR PRODUCTS While you may have been using thick lotions and cream in winter, it’s time to keep those away during summer as they can end up clogging your pores. Opt for fast absorbing light lotions and serums. Ideally apply right after you shower to lock in the moisture. Water-based moisturizers work well for normal skin whereas you can opt for gelbased moisturizers for oily skin. Natural Vibes Ayurvedic Moisturising Lotion, Nutrinorm Wellness Hydrating Body Lotion DON’T FORGET SUNSCREEN This a no brainer. Choose a sunscreen that offers UVA and UVB protection with a minimum SPF of 30. Apply liberally on your face and body. Apply at least 30 minutes before you head out. Nutrinorm Wellness Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30
GO NATURAL Try and use natural ingredients to keep your skin refreshed. Whether it is multani mitti or sandalwood, a spray of hydrating rose water, or lemon and tomato to remove tan! Always choose organic and natural variants. And don’t load up on the makeup. Try and keep the number of such products you use minimal and use organic or natural whenever possible. Let your skin breathe! STAY CLEAN Splash water on your face 2-3 times a day to refresh and remove any dirt or sweat that builds up during this season. If you are prone to prickly heat, try and add neem leaves to your bath water. EAT COOL Make watermelons and cucumbers your best friends during this season! Oily, spicy food will not only make you feel sluggish, it could also adversely affect your skin. Also remember to stay hydrated – drink plenty of water, fresh fruit juices and coconut water. WEAR COOL Ditch the heavy synthetic and silk fabrics and opt for cool cottons and languid linens! They will allow your skin to breathe, go a long way in preventing sweat and body odour build up, as well as problems like prickly heat and rashes.
Starting off with Greek Yogurt, the quest to launch products that are “fresh, tastier, preservative-free” has been the driving force behind Epigamia. Rohan Mirchandani, CEO and Co-Founder, Epigamia shares the brand story.
TOW: What was the goal behind starting Epigamia? ROHAN MIRCHANDANI: We initially launched Greek yogurt as complementary to the highly seasonal ice cream business. However, we received immediate traction and keen consumer interest. We believe the reason for this success is that today’s consumer is discerning with his/her choices, especially when it comes to food. There is a perceptible shift towards a healthier lifestyle. Epigamia Greek Yogurt envisaged being a lifestyle product for daily consumption. More importantly, it needed to be a no-compromise blend of health and taste. Epigamia is currently available in 34 SKUs under Greek Yogurt, Artisanal Curd, Snack Pack, Mishti Doi, Smoothies Spreads - made with Ghee, Plant-based Coconut Milk Yogurt Almond Milk, Probiotic Yogurt, High Protein Paneer and Cream Cheese. TOW: What is the USP of your products, that you believe sets them apart from others in the market? RM: With our first launch, Greek Yogurt, we managed to bring out curd’s full potential by straining it to boost the protein content and infusing it with real fruit to stimulate the taste buds.
Since then, we have been challenging the boundaries of what is possible by launching products that are fresh, tastier, preservativefree, and most importantly - with no compromise on taste: - Epigamia Snack Pack, a convenient on-the go snack of Greek Yogurt and chunky granola - The first-ever lactose-free range of Curd, Mishti Doi and Greek Yogurt Smoothies in India - Epigamia Zero Added Sugar Greek Yogurt, has high protein, infused with real fruits and no added sugar - India’s First Plant-based Coconut Milk Yogurt - Epigamia Almond Milk, rich in calcium and a great source of Vitamin A and D - Epigamia Probiotic Yogurt, filled with 100 million live and active probiotics While there were a plethora of products that claimed to be “healthy,” most were not faithful to their core. the belief that something non-negotiable and nondebatable, when it comes to health in the Indian context, is “Fresh.” So Fresh and No Preservatives is something Epigamia Greek Yogurt decided to be rooted in. TOW: How do you see your product portfolio expanding? RM: We recently launched Probiotic Yogurt and our take on Paneer. In addition to this, we’re working on Coconut Milk-based Beverages and a few surprise ones are coming soon. TOW: How would you describe the Epigamia experience for the consumer? RM: What we realised is that everyone’s choices are different, as are their preferences and limitations. When we spoke to our consumers, that’s what they played out as well. For some, they were having Greek yogurt because of protein, while others loved it because it was fresh and tasty, and for some, yogurt is just inherently healthy. Clearly, food choices are not about strict rules and guidelines. At Epigamia, we are focused on striking a balance that works for our consumers - their happy balance.
