DID YOU KNOW? Most vegetables and fruits - barring a few like onions, bananas and potatoes - are seasonal. In other words, they are best suited for growing in particular seasons and not through the year. And it’s also important to eat seasonal food as well. Why? This allows us to make the best of the nutritive values and freshness. Here is your guide to what vegetables and fruits you should buy this month, ALL AVAILABLE, 100% CERTIFIED-ORGANIC, CHEMICAL- AND PRESERVATIVE FREE, AT THE ORGANIC WORLD!

VEGETABLES Lady’s finger, avocado, broccoli, cucumber, string beans, cluster beans, capsicum, sweet potato, corn, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, mushrooms, methi, ginger, palak, amaranthus baby pumpkin and snake gourd FRUITS Cherries, plum, peaches, dragon fruit, rambutan, sweet passion fruit, kiwi, pineapple

IMPORTANT TIPS! Washing fruits and vegetables properly is a must, especially during the monsoons. The rain and humidity means more bacteria can fester, more mud can stick to the produce. Try the BubbleNut Wash - Natural Fruit and Veggie Foam Wash for a deep clean. Fried food: The digestive system slows down during the monsoons. Avoid heavy, fried food. Instead, opt for baked snacks. Cut fruits: Avoid eating cut fruits and salads outside, as they could be exposed to contaminants. Waterborne diseases are especially common at this time, so make sure you always drink water from a safe and trusted source.

HOW SHOULD YOU STORE FRUITS, VEGETABLES AND OTHER STAPLES TO KEEP THEM FRESH DURING THE MONSOONS? Food spoilage is a common problem during the monsoons, thanks to rising humidity levels. Food items can get soggy and damp; increased levels of microbial growth can lead to food getting rotten/spoiled; worm infestation can also be a problem. So it is key to store your fruits, vegetables and staples properly to ensure that they remain fresh. Here are a few suggestions: FOODGRAINS Expose the grains to sunlight at least once a week. No sun? Take a newspaper, spread the grains on it and warm them in the microwave. Always store your foodgrains in a cool, dry place in airtight containers, preferably glass. Neem leaves or camphor pieces inside the jars can keep worms at bay. Spices - whole or powdered - should ideally be exposed to sunlight once a week.

STORING VEGETABLES High moisture levels make vegetables rot faster. Wrap veggies such as beans, spinach, cabbage, capsicum and coriander in newspaper first. This will absorb excess moisture. And then store in ziplock bags to ensure they stay fresh. Chop the stems of green leafy vegetables. Wrap them in sheets of newspaper to absorb moisture. Keep tomatoes, onions and potatoes in a cool, dry place, ideally a vegetable stacking tray stand. STORING FRUITS Fruits such as plum, cherries and peaches can be stored in paper bags at room temperature if they aren’t ripe. Once ripened, store in the refrigerator to increase longevity. SUGAR & SALT Store in airtight glass containers, preferably glass. Adding a few grains of raw rice inside the jar will help absorb any moisture present. DAIRY Dairy products should be kept refrigerated as far as possible. Wrap your cheese in parchment paper and then a wrap. BREAD Refrigerate bread to keep it fresh!

SKINCARE AND HAIRCARE IN THE MONSOONS SKINCARE Cleansing toning and moisturising is the mantra to follow. Skin that is oily can attract dust and pores can get blocked leading to breakouts. So keeping your skin cleansed is a must. Opt for gentle face washes and scrubs made with organic and natural ingredients and free of parabens and sulfates. The Herb Boutique Aloevera and Charcoal Face Wash, Organic Harvest Neem Face Wash Your skin tends to lose its PH balance at this time, so toning becomes critical, especially to prevent breakouts. Kombucha, the fermented tea drink, is trending the world over for its intended health benefits. Say hello to Mountain Bee Kombucha, new on the shelves at The Organic World! We spoke to Honey Islam, Founder & Head Brewer at Mountain Bee Kombucha to understand what makes kombucha tick, the brand story and more.

TOW: Kombucha seems to be trending the world over - what makes it so popular? HONEY ISLAM: I think the No. 1 reason for kombucha’s popularity is its purported health benefits which are unique and quite fascinating. Most of those come from the fermentation of its original ingredients - tea and sugar by a live-culture called SCOBY. Kombucha’s versatility also plays a part is making it popular among consumers TOW: What was your vision with starting Mountain Bee Kombucha? HI: Mountain Bee Kombucha was started to bring the benefits of fermented foods in easy and accessible form and to raise awareness about gut-health. Our vision is to make gut-friendly and innovative foods & beverages by harnessing the power of microbes and positively impact microbiome health and food sustainability goals. We believe microbes hold the answer to the world’s problems of nutrition, food-waste and hunger.

Unlocking the true potential of food with innovative fermentation can create healthier communities and the planet. TOW: Can you tell us a bit about your product assortment? HI: Our range of kombucha is a reflection of our beliefs - to celebrate local ingredients with fermentation and enhance the nutritional and functional value of kombucha. We’ve created 5 kombucha variants by using beneficial teas like whole-leaf green, black and oolongs and botanicals like butterfly blue pea flower, rose, roselle, whole spices, seasonal fruits and turned them into superfoods of sorts. All our products contain active live-cultures and their metabolites that are known to be beneficial for us. TOW: Why is Mountain Bee Kombucha the better choice? HI: We believe the true potential of fermented foods is in keeping them raw and unpasteurised and that’s the way we like to keep our products. We emphasize longer-fermentation cycles to increase the content of organic acids and other metabolites in our brews. Nevertheless, we don’t use any shortcuts or cut corners in quality ingredients. All the benefits of the ingredients are passed onto the consumers multifold by applying fermentation techniques that we’ve developed over the years. Our products do not contain any preservatives or artificial flavourings. TOW: How would you like to see your brand grow? HI: We would like Mountain Bee Kombucha to become synonyms with functional foods that help our gut-microbiome. We are growing into an educational destination for all things fermented, flavours and products that can help people have healthier guts!

DEEPTI MARTOLIA, 35 YOGA TEACHER I am a yoga teacher, designer and an artist. I would call myself positive, creative, sensitive and spontaneous. I have spent most of my childhood in the hills of Uttarakhand and that’s where my love for nature comes from. I love being around people and at the same time enjoy my time alone. I love outdoor activities from playing football to going on treks. I have done a headstand on a surfing board inside a swimming pool and I am teaching Acro Yoga to my fur baby Hachiko. Also not to forget I have faked a medical emergency at 10 am at night to pull off an April fool prank on a friend! About wellness, I have been practicing and teaching yoga. It has been my love and

passion for many years. I practice yoga daily and teach with my heart and soul. Yoga teachings have deeply impacted my life. I feel privileged to have learnt this profound knowledge from my gurus and I intend to pass it on. I can go on and on about what yoga is to me but keeping it short - yoga keeps me grounded and balanced. I have become peaceful and joyful since practicing yoga. It’s so important that ‘we all are healthy inside out ‘. With time I’ve come to realize that when your body, your mind , your energy, your emotions are in tune with each other, that’s when you are healthy. We tend to have clarity in our thoughts, joy in your heart and peace in mind. We should try finding joy with the little things around us to fight challenging situations. Not to forget, find happiness within and you will have so much to give to the world.
