TNGL Weekend Report During the weekend of November 13th through the 15th, a group of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) students gathered in Hunt Library Studio B for the first-ever TNGL (Toyz Nation Gaming League) Weekend. TNGL Weekend is a hackathon/game jam aimed at motivating a diverse range of students to collaborate in projects, utilizing both technology and creativity. The event was a success and a great learning experience! For 48 hours, beginning Friday, November 13th, four teams raced to build a game. Friday night was utilized for idea-generating and planning. After taking a break to sleep at 12am and returning at 9am on Saturday for breakfast, the work truly began and continued until 12pm on Sunday. A total of 10 participants and 11 observers attended the event with diversity achieved on multiple levels: majors of study, school/class year, ethnicity, gender, and race, meeting a big part of the gaming leagueʼs goal to achieve innovation and creativity through a diverse body of participants. Throughout the event, many informative discussions took place that transformed into impromptu lectures with TNGLʼs faculty advisor, Thomas Corbett, Associate Producer with Electronic Arts and EA Special Faculty for the Entertainment Technology Center at CMU. These discussions involved next generation technology and the future of gaming, including but not limited to Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Biometrics. At the eventʼs conclusion, the four teams presented their projects: an in-progress VR experience using the Kinect and Oculus Rift, a text-based two-player game written in Python, a Unity-based reaction-time game set in an eternal train tunnel, and a level-based platformer game with interactive music elements. The founder, Wole Idowu, also presented a long-running project, a Personal Portable Server (PPS1) using Intelʼs platform: a Z3735F quad core processor with 2GB of RAM; a Windows 10 operating system; and wireless charging capabilities for mobile devices. The presentation began an engaging discussion on the Internet of Things and useful applications. Through this experience, the TNGL officers learned many things that they plan to utilize in the planning and execution of future events. In this first event, the TNGL achieved innovation, engaging discussions of ideas, superb creative engagement, and widely diverse participation and audience. The TNGL officers are analyzing attendance data and presentation footage in order to best implement what they learned in moving forward. The TNGL looks forward to scaling up its event planning process in order to host a larger and more interscholastic TNGL Weekend next spring! The attendance data and presentation video are available online and for further review, upon request. www.tngl.biz

They do grow up, but it doesn’t mean we have to grow up too. I have been blessed to live my youth through the eyes of my child who is growing up in a new world of connected devices, VR, mobile games, connected cars, and apps in cars. Who would have thought of that in the 80’s or even in the 90’s, for that matter? I am excited to help my son organize with his friends and colleagues to bring innovation through hackathons at the Carnegie Mellon University campus. Who knows, one day they may become like one of the great makers I interviewed for this issue. We want to give you a different perspective and deeper insight into how the products you love came to be and through my son, a peek into how ideas are born and potential is developed. It’s a whole new world of toyz and to be frank, we believe toyz are going to rule the world. Come out and play!

MERCEDES BENZ GLA45 AMG One would have thought it heresy to have an AMG built on a front-wheel-drive platform co-developed with Renault/Nissan, but that would be misplaced assessment after a moment with the utterly incredible GLA45 AMG. The GLA based on the same platform as its sibling the CLA , is a strikingly beautiful compact crossover. The design features striking lines and an emotion that evokes attachment. In AMG form you get more muscles in the form of additional body cladding and more brown in the form of a 2.0L turbo engine that produces 355 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a 7-speed transmission along with a permanent all-wheel-drive system, Mercedes claims a 0-60 acceleration time of 4.8 seconds. I fell in love with the GLA45 AMG and fell hard. The 20-inch alloy wheels chewed up pavement as I made frequent trips across I-70 just to hear the tantalizing purr of the turbo with a rich note that is not only symphonic but operatic with its rich baritone. Mercedes even has an ECO mode with the GLA45 AMG and one would be surprised to learn it gets 29 MPG on the highway and sips 23 MPG in city driving due to smart technologies like start/stop during idling. With a base price of $48,300, the GLA45 AMG can get pricey fast with options like the special brown paint and brown interior in the model I drove. Additional options like an essential AMG performance exhaust, park assist, AMG performance steering wheel and seats, 20-inch alloy wheels, the famed Mercedes Premium package, and a Multimedia package brought the total to $64,975 delivered. Each AMG has a Bespoke engine with the technician signing each one which is part of the premium one pays, the other part is for exceptional performance and above all, the oldest automotive nameplate, who literally invented the car, Mercedes. LEXUS RC 350 AWD F SPORT COUPE

The original Lexus 300 and 400 coupes were the cars du jour in the hip-hop set. Dubbed the “Lex Bubble,” the Lexus coupe was the ultimate status symbol and for an artist to feature it in his videos, it signaled having arrived to super stardom and portended even greater success to come. The second edition went in a different direction with a much smaller body and a retractable hardtop. With the new RC, one gets the same feeling of the original with room for four in a coupe and emotional styling. The design cues of the new RC are provocative and attractive, grabbing and summoning you to engage. I had a chance to drive one for a week and the looks were only surpassed by the performance. The 3.5L V6 makes 306HP and 277 lb-ft of torque and was mated to a six-speed automatic in the AWD model I drove. The model was also equipped with the F Sport package and the Navigation/Mark Levinson Premium Audio package with 5.1 surround and 835 watts of power. It came in an ultrasonic blue mica paint coat which drew attention as I parked and navigated my way through the DC metropolitan area. The RC 350 F Sport with all-wheel drive starts at $48,715. CHRYSLER 300S

The Chrysler 300 took the entire industry by storm when the new rear wheel drive platform was introduced over a decade ago. So much has changed with Chrysler since then, but the 300 has remained a standard bearer in the large sedan segment. The 300 has an arsenal of technology with an 8-speed automatic transmission that includes a rotary E-shift in place of the traditional gear shifter and steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters, for example. I drove the 300S model for a week around the DC metropolitan area and garnered attention to the redline red tri-coat pearl exterior paint. 20-inch wheels came standard along with a 552-watt Beats Audio premium 10-speaker system. For the 2016 model year, the 300 got upgraded exterior lights, integrated exhaust, and an upgraded grill in addition to an upgraded interior with features like Uconnect 8.4 and in the model I drove, a panoramic sun roof. Under the hood, the 300S model now comes with 300 hp from the same 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine. The base price on the 300S is $35,470. One of the greatest driving benefits is getting 31 mpg on the highway which is exceptional for a full size sedan with a V6. For more information, visit www.chrysler.com.

HYUNDAI GENESIS AWD 3.8 I can’t sing enough praises of the Hyundai Genesis. I have been a fan since its 2009 debut and I’m impressed by how it has carried a niche as a technological marvel with taut muscular lines, its own distinctive front signature and base engine performance that exceeds most of its competitors. The success of the Genesis has now spawned a standalone brand that will have executives from Lamborghini and Bentley in the fold to build on the success and carve a spot at the top of the luxury car heap. There is a lot to work from. The base engine is a 3.8L V6 which makes 311 hp and is mated to Hyundai’s own 8-speed automatic. The model I drove also had all-wheel drive and had a base price of $41,250. Adding the signature, tech and ultimate packages brought the total to $53,100 delivered, yet options like a 9.2-inch touchscreen display with navigation, a Lexicon 17-speaker sound system, smart cruise control with full stop/start support, a panoramic sunroof and more were included. AUTOMOTIVE » TEST DRIVES AUDI A3 QUATTRO

The Audi A3 is quite an impressive compact car that did not feel so compact when I drove it for a week in the DC metropolitan area. At 6 feet tall and over 200 pounds, I felt comfortable and at ease in the A3 and had quite a thrill driving around with the 2.0L turbo engine that makes 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The A3 has exceptional styling, but what I loved was the handling of the fabled quattro all-wheel drive system. Maneuvering in and out of our hectic traffic was swift. The model I drove had the Prestige trim which added heated seats, Audi MMI navigation, and a favorite - the Audi MMI touch with handwriting-recognition technology that allows you to write letters on a touchpad with your fingers. It also included the Bang & Olufsen premium sound system and adaptive cruise control with stop and go technology. At an entry price of $34,200, the Audi A3 has fierce competition and the Prestige model optioned with the sport package, 19” sport wheels and summer tires for an additional $1600, brought the A3 to $46,150 delivered. Fuel economy was good at 33 mpg on the highway and the A3 was mated to a 6-speed S tronic transmission as opposed to the 8-speed I have driven with in the A4. Simply put, the A3 is a blast to drive; it can be optioned with a slew of features; and of course, it comes standard with LED headlights and taillights. For more information, visit www. audiusa.com.

VOLVO S60 T5 INSCRIPTION

I have previously spoken of the affection my family has for Volvo with fond memories of riding around Boston in a blue 240 DL, of my uncle also driving around Boston in a brown 244 DL, and of my mother later buying a 960. The new S60 is not the Volvo of old. The S60 Inscription model is built in China by parent company, Geely, for China’s car market where owners expect to be driven and as such, an extended wheelbase is the standard du jour. The quality of this Volvo is one of the best I have experienced with premium touches like real wood inlays. There are several standard and available safety and technology features including front and rear park assist, city safety collision avoidance technology, driver alert control-road sign information-active high beam technology, and much more. I drove the front-wheel drive, turbocharged S60 with the Platinum trim which adds a Harmon Kardon premium sound system and a technology package with features like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, driver alert control, and collision warning with full auto brake. I was able to check out Volvo’s Sensus Connect telematics system and use in-car apps like Yelp and Wikipedia to find food and places, search for fuel and so much more. The S60 T5 Inscription FWD is very fuel-efficient with an EPA rating of 37 mpg on the highway from a 2.0L turbo engine that makes 240 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Quite simply, I’m impressed. AUTOMOTIVE » TEST DRIVES

A car fit for a king is what is proclaimed by adverts from Kia featuring King of the NBA, Lebron James. I was able to put that claim to test in my recent jaunt around the DC metropolitan area in the Kia K900 and I have to admit the proclamation has merit. The K900 is Kia’s flagship and it is loaded with every amenity luxury buyers would want. From safety features like advanced smart cruise control and lane departure warning to convenience features like heated and ventilated seats, a head-up display, front and rear camera display options, a surround view monitor, a 9.2-inch touchscreen display, Kia’s UVO luxury services to a panoramic roof and more, the K900 is loaded. The ride quality is superb with different driving options. The K900 comes with an 8-speed automatic and the model I drove had the 3.8L V6 which makes 311 hp and gets 26 mpg on the highway. The base price on the K900 Luxury V6 is $54,900 and with options like the head-up display and advanced smart cruise control included in the VIP package of the model I drove, the delivery price was $60,850. MERCEDES BENZ S550 4MATIC

When you create the very first automobile and subsequently define the benchmark for luxury flagships the release of a new edition is a global event weighed with anticipation and massive expectations. With the new S class Mercedes did not disappoint and in the process introduced a slew of new technologies that not only set precedence also advance automotive possibilities. The driver assist package is one of the most advanced and is actually the closest to autonomous driving in its segment among internal combustion options. With everything from lane assist to steering assist to adaptive cruise control to collision prevention to brake assist. You get sophisticated solution that could allow for fully autonomous driving if the law permits. Another feature I like is the object detection integrated into the night vision package that allows you to recognize pedestrians that are too dark to be seen by the naked eye. These technologies increase the distance between the S Class and the increasing field aiming to contend for the luxury flagship sedan throne. The fit and finish on the interior has also tremendously improved to parity with luxury coach build. With this S class Mercedes has produced a new benchmark that has a 4.6L V8 that makes 449 HP, 516 lb-ft of torque an AWD system that still gets 26 mpg on the highway. Base price on the S550 4Matic is $95,900 and the loaded model I drove costs $122,895 delivered. For more info visit www.mbusa.com.

AUTOMOTIVE Âť TEST DRIVES AUDI TT ROADSTER 2.0T QUATTRO S TRONIC

I have fallen in love. That is my confession after a week in the Audi TT Roadster. I truly enjoyed this fabulous convertible. It rides exceptionally and has a slew of tech features that I took advantage of while driving around the DC metropolitan area and enjoying the summer weather. I even caught up with my old DJ from my college band days and we were on top of the world as we played our old tunes through the Bang & Olufsen sound system while driving through Northwest, DC on the way to Bethesda. This was the perfect vehicle for such a trek and though we are both 6-feet plus, we felt comfortable riding. The TT has a 2.0L turbo engine that makes 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque and rides on 18-inch wheels. I regretted my departure from the TT, but my tales won an Audi convert in the form of my brother who just bought an S6. The TT Roadster starts at $46,400 and with options, the model I drove was $54,700 delivered. For more info, visit www.audiusa.com.

GMC TERRAIN AWD DENALI

One can expect more differentiation between GMC and the other GM brands moving forward. The new Acadia has shrunk, getting it closer in line with the Terrain, which has performed marvelously in the mid-size SUV segment. The Terrain is a dynamic combination of looks, functionality, technology, and practicality. In a week of driving the Terrain Denali, I was impressed with safety features like lane departure warning and forward collision alert which came in handy in the gridlock and tense DC Metropolitan-area traffic. With lots of chrome accents and premium touches, the Terrain Denali more than holds its own for luxury-inclined customers. The all-wheel drive (AWD) model I drove featured a 3.6L V6 engine that makes 301 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque and fuel economy was rated 23 mpg on the highway. The Terrain AWD Denali starts at $35,925 and with options like the 3.6L V6 engine, a power sunroof, and a Color Touch Navigation System with IntelliLink technology in the model I drove, the price is just above $41,000 delivered. The Chevy Impala has waged a furious battle and finds itself frequently at the top of sales in the full size market. The upgrades made to this edition have served the Impala well with a combination of great style, excellent fit and finish, soft leather and premium finishes in the interior, modern styling and integrated LED lighting along with an efficient 3.6L V6 engine that makes 305 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque with an EPA rating of 29 MPG on the highway. I enjoyed features like lane departure warning and forward collision alert during my drive through gridlock traffic in the DC metropolitan area. Apple CarPlay was a great feature which seamlessly integrated my iPhone 6s with the vehicle and allowed access to text messages, navigation and music from my phone. Technology such as wireless charging is also available and with the $25 iPhone wireless charging cover I bought from IKEA, my phone is compatible. Samsung phones now come integrated with wireless charging so you need not worry about a car charger with this feature. FORD F-150 4X4 SUPERCAB The Ford F-150 has been the best-selling vehicle in America for a very long time. One can say the F-150 is how Ford mints money and is essentially the bread and butter for America’s most fabled auto brand. The question then becomes why mess with a good thing? The answer beyond regulatory requirements is that innovation requires fundamental changes to existing practices and products. The new Ford F-150 is aluminum-based making for incredible weight savings paired with a new V-6 option from a 2.7 L engine. You read that right - a 2.7 L V6 yet it makes 325 HP and 375 lb-ft of torque. Both of these figures trump the old Triton 5.4 L V8’s which powered both the Expedition I had and F-150’s. The EcoBoost has been an innovative marvel that has found its way into millions of Ford vehicles and in the F-150 it shows it is capable of heavy-duty action and professional-grade duty. I drove the F-150 for a week and having been quite familiar with the past V-8, I was impressed with the power and durability shown by the F-150. There was no discernible difference in how it handled or accelerated versus other V8’s I have driven from Ford and I am still shocked it was a 2.7L engine. The F-150 4X4 gets an estimated18 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway. The F-150 4X4 Supercab I drove started at $37,005 and with options like the EcoBoost engine, chrome appearance package, tailgate step and more, it came to $43,085 delivered. DRIVE » Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

They sure do grow up fast. It seems like it was just yesterday when the MKZ debuted at the NY auto show as the Zephyr in 2004. Owners Illustrated Magazine was on hand for the birth and chronicled it with an exclusive photo shoot so it was with great pride that I rekindled with the MKZ as my son and I attended an exclusive event in Silicon Valley. I also drove the MKZ to the E3 conference in Los Angeles and the beauty was a star in Valet when I attended the Xbox briefing at USC. The MKZ has grown and it is great to see the development from an entry into the luxury market to a full-fledged technologically packed competitor, which excels in value and dominates in style and technology. Beyond the standard list of adaptive cruise control, lane assist, rear view camera with cross traffic alert, front sensors, on the safety side, the MKZ amazed me with the lack of a traditional gearshift. To drive the MKZ you simply push the start button then push the reverse button and push the drive button and you are on your way. In the stop-and-go traffic of LA it was interesting to see the MKZ drive accelerate and stop, vibrate, give voice prompts for destination and utilize SYNC to change the channel and media. You truly feel like

you are in the future of transportation when driving the MKZ due to the amount of robotics involved. With Sirius Travel you can check for fuel prices locally, which I was able to do by voice command. Driving 20 miles took about an hour and a half in LA but the Hybrid came in handy and I was still able to get about 38 MPG in my drives. The MKZ comes standard with a 2.0L Hybrid with a CVT at the base price of $36,190. Features like cooled seats came in handy during my wait in traffic and the THX premium sound system was great. I was able to integrate both an iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S5 simultaneously via USB. The MKZ is also able to assist with parking which came in handy when my son and I dined at Pho 84, a Vietnamese restaurant in downtown Oakland. Driving from LA to the Bay Area was a 400-mile excursion, which didn’t seem as daunting in the MKZ. You get 10-way power driver seats which allows for multiple ways to configure your driving position for what turned out to be a 6-hour drive going to LA and a 7 and a half hour drive coming back. My 5 days with the MKZ was a week before Father’s Day and it was a momentous event for my family as the MKZ is now in the folklore of my son’s trip to Silicon Valley where he showed his designs for an Android-based gaming console with a focus on use for education to bridge the digital divide. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate vehicle to travel and spend time in with my technologist son and cover the 2014 E3 gaming conference. The ultimate driving machine, BMW, has seized the crown of luxury vehicle sales from its rivals globally. To maintain their crown, BMW would need more vehicles to lure working professional and millennials who recently have been delaying car purchases and opting for other transportation options. FORD MUSTANG 2.3 ECOBOOST PREMIUM

I love American muscle and no car represents that better than the Mustang. For over 50 years, the Mustang has been the standard for American muscle and as the current sales king that title seems safe. The latest Mustang is something I look at daily, in model form, as one has to admire the sleekness and the sloping lines of the design, a testament to the work Moray Callum and team have done. We were fortunate to speak to him about that and more in an exclusive interview we share in this issue. Beyond the great design, are the wide range of power options and the introduction of a 2.3-Liter I-4 engine that highlights the EcoBoost technology by making 310 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. This was quite impressive in my week around the DC Metropolitan area. I was apprehensive yet surprised, actually, as a former SHO owner myself. The 2.3L EcoBoost had a great exhaust sound, swift acceleration and great fuel economy, getting 21 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. You also get great technology like the SYNC 3 system and RECARO racing seats along with adaptive cruise control, 19-inch wheels, a voice-activated navigation system, a 6-speed automatic transmission, and so much more that took the base $29,300 to just above $39,000 delivered. With performance, style and efficiency, you can’t beat the Mustang EcoBoost. For more info, visit www.ford.com.

CHEVROLET CAMARO 2SS COUPE

The Camaro has been a tremendous success for Chevy. Serving as the halo car of the brand (excluding the Corvette, a brand unto itself), the Camaro in its different guises and powertrains has been a huge showroom draw as well as a cultural icon via its placement as Bumble Bee in the billion-dollar Transformers movie franchise. So the question becomes how to build upon success and here is where the Camaro gets spectacular marks. With a re-designed and upgraded interior and a 6.2L V8 motor, I was able to feel the exhilaration of its 426 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque output. Not only do consumers get a thrilling ride, but also new technology such as the Chevy MyLink, a color head-up display, OnStar, a navigation system and so much more. The 2SS coupe model I spent a week with in the DC Metropolitan area included standard rear park assist, front leather seating and so much more. It also featured the RS package which includes 20-inch wheels and high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps with LED halo rings. The base price on the Camaro 2SS coupe is $37,305. The all-new Kia Sportage is simply a wonderfully constructed machine. It is assembled with premium materials and also has features that portray a heritage beyond its segment. In my week driving around the Washington, DC metropolitan area, I was pleasantly surprised by the gorgeous panoramic roof which gave a view of the sky and extended beyond what is found on other competitors in the compact crossover segment. The SX all-wheel drive I drove also had heated and ventilated seats, an 8-inch touchscreen display with navigation system, blind spot detection, 19-inch alloy wheels, and a striking design that gave it a luxury feel. The model I drove did not have any additional options so after a week of driving I felt that this is a compelling alternative to many luxury brands. With the SX all-wheel drive you get a 2.0 L turbo engine that makes 237 HP and 260 lb-ft of torque. It has great comfort features, excellent telematics including Kia’s UVO and Android Auto integration, a proximity detecting lift gate and more at a price of $34,895 delivered. Fuel economy is EPArated at 23 MPG on the highway. For more information, visit www.kia.com.

CADILLAC CTS 3.6L V6

Named after the founder of the city of Detroit by the godfather of American luxury automobiles, Henry Leland, Cadillac is back as the standard of American automotive luxury. No vehicle portends Cadillac’s comeback more than the CTS. Our VP of Operations owns the prior edition CTS and the upgrades installed in the new CTS make it almost unrecognizable, having a minimal relationship to the past edition. The bold quality is superb from the wood treatment to the CUE system. The amount of technology packed into the new CTS is mindnumbing. We simply fell in love with the configurable digital cluster and the standard full-color Head-Up display, a fascinating evolution of the system developed at The Carnegie Mellon Institute for Complex Engineered Systems where my son conducts research. The new CTS is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the first from GM, paddle shifters, technological innovations like Magnetic Ride Control, and safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control. The CTS has a 3.6 L V6 engine making 321 HP and 275 lb-ft of torque and getting 29 mpg on the highway and 19 mpg in the city in a much larger vehicle that has lost 250 lbs in weight. The tight, angular lines and LED lighting provide an imposing silhouette as the CTS heads down the highway, signaling a comeback to prominence, unexpected yet definitive in its impact. Cadillac is back and one can anticipate that the city of Detroit is not far behind. The price of the CTS Premium Collection I drove is $68,820 delivered. For more info, visit www.cadillac.com.

CHEVY COLORADO 4WD Z71 The once neglected mid-size pickup segment is back and the Chevy Colorado is leading the way. With multiple models available featuring an I4 or a V6 engine, the Colorado is a more-than-capable truck. With a towing capacity of 7000 lbs, the Colorado surpasses many crossovers and full-size pickups of past generations. I tested the 3.6L V6 Z71 edition with 4G LTE in a red hot exterior and was impressed. The MyLink telematics and its 8” display is a winner. You have a combination of a touchscreen and easy-to-use dials to control multiple functions in addition to the 8” monitor being used for the backup camera. The Colorado also had Siri Eyes Free as an option which makes good for hands-free messaging. With a combination of 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque matched with a six-speed automatic, the Colorado is more than capable for light duty service. The Colorado Z71 starts at $34,115. MAZDA CX-3 TOURING ALL-WHEEL DRIVE The auto industry is changing and yet manufacturers are meeting demands of consumers by diversifying their offerings and creating even more segments. Last year the auto industry had its best sales year in history and after the collapse of 2008 nobody could have sensibly predicted that. Mazda, after gaining independence from Ford, has had to be extremely efficient with their offerings and so far so good, especially with the CX-3 I drove. The CX-3 is a compact crossover yet it has style and a slew of options at an affordable price. I loved the all-wheel drive system which made for fun driving in the DC metropolitan area along with safety features like blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. The model I drove had a delivered price of $26,150. For more information, visit www. mazdausa.com.

CHEVY TRAX Based on the same platform as the Buick Encore, the Chevy Trax is a new crossover with great content and all-wheel drive for as low as $21,620. I drove the LS AWD which gave me an idea of how this vehicle would differentiate itself in the now crowded SUV segment. With the 7-inch color touch screen, I was able to pair my iPhone via a lightning cable, and use the BringGo app for navigation through the MyLink apps. Pandora also plays nicely with MyLink. With 4G LTE available you can stream via the onboard connectivity without using your phone’s data which helped as I used the 99-cent BringGo app and downloaded additional maps. The Trax has a 1.4L 4-cylinder engine with a six-speed auto transmission, 138 hp and148 lb-ft of torque, getting you 34 mpg on the highway. The Trax is a great entry-level crossover from Chevy that should find willing customers among many millennials. For more info, visit www. chevrolet.com.

HYUNDAI SONATA 2.0T The last generation Sonata was a massive boon for Hyundai and its bottom line. The Sonata brought Hyundai into the top 5 in sales in the critical mid-size segment. With a combination of breathtaking style and superior content and value, the Sonata has consistently had sales of over 100,000 units annually. With great success why mess with a good thing? Hyundai has made significant improvements with the new Sonata while muting the design language somewhat. The new Sonata Turbo has also been detuned in regards to horsepower, going from 274 to 245 with an emphasis on getting more low-end torque. I love the new smart cruise control with stop/start capability, the Blue Link telematics system, the user interface, and even the new styling, which grew on me during my week with the Sonata. The integrated LEDs were a great touch along with the performance wheels and the auto trunk feature that functions with a proximity sensor. The Sonata remains a worthy competitor in the mid-size segment. For more info visit www.hyundaiusa.com.

BUICK REGAL FWD GS Buick is not the same and when referenced to its past generation, that could be a great thing. Buick is undergoing a resurgence that leans heavily on its global reach to bring products that have served the brand well in differentiating itself in the luxury segment. Buick also has a performance heritage and the Regal GS is doing a great job bringing it to fore. The GS is available in an allwheel drive though I drove a front-wheel drive model with a 2.0T engine making 295 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed transmission. There is a special GS driving mode which gives a performance setting that allows you to maximize the great chassis and powertrain of the GS. The GS features the Buick IntelliLink infotainment system as standard along with OnStar with 4G LTE. 19-inch wheels are also standard in the GS. A Consumer Reports recommendation, I can see how the GS received the vaunted reviews during my week with it. The base price on the GS FWD is $36,905 and with options like adaptive cruise control and safety features like forward collision alert, lane departure warning and side blind zone alert with a beautiful white diamond paint job, the model I drove was just above $42,000 delivered. HYUNDAI SONATA ECO The Hyundai Sonata is a great vehicle that has found resonance among the highly soughtafter midsize sedan customers. With annual sales approaching 200K, and a solid position in the top 5 in sales in its segment, the Sonata wins with a new muscular look and advanced technologies that include search powered by Google and Blue Link. I drove an Eco with the technology package which has features like Hands-free smart trunk via a proximity sensor in the key fob, an 8-inch touchscreen navigation system, blind spot detection with rear crosstraffic alert, the aforementioned Google-powered search and Blue Link. I drove the Eco from the DC Metropolitan area to Orlando, Florida and was delighted at how comfortable the ride was and how little I spent on gas. The Eco gets 38MPG on the highway using energy-saving methods like 16-inch tires, a 1.6 L Turbo which makes 178 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, and a 7-speed EcoShift® Dual Clutch transmission (DCT) with SHIFTRONIC®. The Chrysler 200 is now firmly planted in the top 10 in its segment with annual sales already exceeding 100,000 and the possibility of hitting 200,000 annual sales this year or next. TOYOTA CAMRY XLE V6 The Toyota Camry is the undisputed champ. The midsize sedan market has gotten intensely competitive with striking designs winning over customers and posing new threats to the Camry’s long reign. The Camry is not rearming with just looks, however, as the new Camry sports a 7-inch touch screen multimedia interface with Entune integration and navigation, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, ten JBL audio speakers, voice -command controls, USB ports, and so much more in the XLE V6 I drove, which brings me to the V6. KIA SEDONA SXL The new Kia Sedona is light-years beyond the model it replaces. It was the first to get the new design language and an updated grille and quite frankly it is the best-looking minivan I have seen yet. I love the new fit and finish along with the premium touches of the past model. The seating quality and leather touches are what you would expect in luxury vehicles. I love the layout of the cockpit and of the middle row with captain seats. The driving position is great and the UVO-based telematics system wins as usual. Kia was ahead of the telematics game with UVO through a partnership with Microsoft. The latest iteration has been a winner and it further separates the Sedona within its segment. The Sedona is powered by a 3.3 L V6 that makes 276 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque which was adequate for my mixed driving on I-70 and around the DC metropolitan area. The Sedona has a towing capacity of 3500 lbs. The Limited model starts at $39,900 and gets 17 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway. For more information, visit www.kia.com.

TOYOTA SIENNA SE PREMIUM The minivan market has shrunk in recent years with the advent of carbased crossovers, but that does not diminish the value and functionality they provide and Toyota recognizes this with the Sienna. Minivans provide different seating and entry options. A minivan, as the name implies, functions more like a van but with better amenities than you would find in the typical cargo van and in the case of the Sienna, you get a Dual-Screen Blu-ray player, heated seats, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, 7-inch touchscreen navigation, and so much more. I was able to haul three generations of my family around the DC metropolitan area and have them enjoy watching a movie as I navigated through traffic. The power sliding doors made it easy for my mother to exit and enter easily. The Sienna is powered by a 3.5 L V6 which makes 266 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque with a towing capacity of 3500 lbs. I love the driving dynamics and handling of the Sienna. It has an estimated 18 MPG city and 25 MPG Highway rating and the SE premium model I drove was $40,944 delivered. KIA SORENTO AWD EX V6 With Pierce Brosnan promoting the new Kia Sorento, the message seems to be that the Sorento is fit for James Bond and most certainly should satisfy any need you may have likewise. With a 3.3 L V6 delivering 290 HP and 252 lb-ft of torque wrapped in a tight, muscular package that is equally stunning and svelte, the Sorento has been re-imagined for 2016. I drove the all-wheel drive EX V6 and was very impressed with the six-speed automatic transmission, 18-inch alloys, leather seat trim, and the solid fit and finish. In my opinion, the Sorento felt more solid than some luxury offerings I have tested, which portends a great future for Kia. The South Korean manufacturer has thrived under the design leadership of Peter Schreyer. The new, aggressive styling coincides with Kia’s entry into the luxury segment and with the Sorento, the promise of strong contender in the sevenpassenger premium crossover SUV market is a great boon for consumers. The Sorento AWD EX V6 starts at $33,700 and the loaded model I drove with options like the Premium Package which includes a power liftgate, a Lane Departure Warning system, a Blind-Spot Detection system and more, costs slightly over $37,000 delivered. DRIVE » Kia Soul EV Kia Soul EV Driving an all-electric car is a life-changing experience. It’s not simply the powertrain and not having to refuel or worrying about driving range or the amount of technology integrated into electric cars including advanced telematics, it is the entire culture and the communities who foster and advance electric propulsion. I had a chance to spend extended time with the Kia Soul EV and beyond being impressed, I experienced life changes that not only made me live healthier but also had a positive impact on the planet. The Kia Soul EV is capable of 3 levels of charging which makes it unique in its segment. You can use the Level 3 CHAdeMO 480V, the Level 2 240V or the standard Level 1 wall charger with 120V. During my 2 weeks I used a combination of all 3. I was able to use a Level 3 at MOM’s Organic Market in Frederick, MD which gave me an 84-mile driving range in less than an hour. This allowed flexibility to travel to Northern VA, Western MD or the nation’s capital, DC. I signed up for a ChargePoint account and was able to use my mobile phone to pay for using their Level 2 chargers. Not with MOM’s, however, their Level 3 access were free 24 hours a day and I used the time to shop. With the ChargePoint chargers it took about 4 hours to get a full charge. However, I rarely got below 30% and I planned my trips around production of our publication, building a gaming computer we were reviewing, visiting family or even going to the library. Each charge was a few dollars as in less than $4 to fill up, which was less than a latte or a meal. At home, I was able to plug it outside into a regular wall outlet which took almost a day or about 21 hours to fully reach the 90-mile range with the Soul EV. I walked more, got a chance to notice so many things locally, and visit landmarks often taken for granted. I even charged up at FedEx Field for free. There were no shortages of places to charge locally, though gaps exist in some counties who haven’t gone full bore in their support. Tax credits of up to $30,000 exist for businesses to build charging infrastructure and some like MOM’s Organic use alternative power entirely. The Soul EV is stylish, handles great, has tons of cargo and great telematics especially a Navigation system that lets you know where the nearest charging stations are. The base price on the Soul EV is $33,700. For more info, visit www.kia.com.

The Volt has developed an identity unto itself within GM. It has some of the most passionate and satisfied customers in the auto industry so the next generation had to literally hit on all cylinders, though the preference was that it had none. For the next generation Volt, GM wanted to achieve over 50 miles of electric range and also 50 mpg when not in electric mode. Success was achieved on the electric range part. The Volt is powered by two electric motors and the new gen has a lighter, more powerful lithium-ion battery that when fully charged allows drivers to go for up to 53 miles on electric-only power. That is 15 miles more than the 38-mile range of the gen 1. The Volt also has a range extender 1.5L direct-injection engine so when battery power is low, the Volt switches to its gas-powered generator to continue the drive for a total 420 mile-range. The fuel economy of the gasoline engine is a combined 42 mpg. In addition to these benefits, drivers can enjoy an upgraded interior with premium materials and exceptional telematics via Chevy MyLink. The Volt Premier starts at $37,570 and was $40,925 delivered. For more info, visit www.chevrolet.com.

Rating: M Release Date: Out Now www.callofduty.com

CALL OF DUTY ADVANCED WARFARE With Sledgehammer Games taking the helm, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare is the most unique of the venerable franchise yet. Abandoning previous settings and advancements, Advanced Warfare utilizes robots and an urban setting as a sharp contrast to the deserts that were prominent before. With the new settings and robotic focus, gameplay is difficult and is in some aspects incredibly better. Leveling up is quicker, the game is easier to play and you can use some of the same weapons as before. The quantum laser gun is one of our favorites to run campaigns and cause killing mayhem. Multi-player is still where this title makes its name. Graphics on the game are also improved. This edition of Call of Duty is one of the best yet and we give it high marks of 9 out of 10 and certainly recommend it as a must-buy for game consoles and PC’s. FORZA HORIZON 2

When I began this Toyz journey 9 years ago, the vision was to combine editorials about cars, gadgets, and video games into one publication. At that time, the notion seemed far-fetched and many wondered if I had focus, yet history has vindicated us. The Forza Horizon 2 video game on Xbox One has blessed us. With rich, immersive visuals and stunning graphics, Forza Horizon 2 has done the best job of simulating the driving experience of performance vehicles. The platform has also partnered with automotive manufacturers to provide concept vehicles and future products for gamers to experience in the virtual world of Forza and also be able to experience on the legendary tracks and in the exotic locations us auto journalists frequent as we gain our perspective on the vehicles we evaluate. Nothing beats the real thing; however, Forza Horizons 2 comes the closest to helping you get an in-depth engagement with the ultra mobiles. One of my favorite vehicles is the now discontinued Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. In Forza I was able to relive my experience pushing the 571 HP engine to its limits and the rich sound gave me flashbacks of one of the most memorable moments of my life. I can’t wait to see what the Turn 10 team does next in this series and how they will enhance the gameplay and integrate the upcoming Windows 10. I can only fantasize about the upcoming Windows HoloLens along with Kinnect and the virtual and interactive possibilities to experience a game like Forza Horizons 2. Publisher: Microsoft Developer: Turn 10 Studios Platform: XBox One, PC Genre: Racing

FORZA MOTORSPORT 6 When I was a pre-teen, I had a picture of a Lamborghini Countach on my wall and had aspirations of driving one, one day, and if I was so fortunate, owning one. My dream has not come true, though one can still dream and that spirit inspired me to become the journalist I have become today and in the process, drive many of the cars of my dreams. The opening sequence of Forza Motorsport 6 captures that very essence. Today you don’t need a poster on your wall to inspire driving. You can drive via video game and the intro with the kid dreaming about racing the Ford GT against Ferrari, Lamborghini, Viper, Aston Martin, and more was simply a brilliant placement for the Ford GT and a testament to how far we have come in driving simulation, where a game design team can influence the creation of an actual vehicle. I drive and review vehicles weekly and I have also played most of the driving simulation games on the market and I have to say I am quite impressed with Forza 6. It was fun to drive some of the vehicles I drove in this issue including the VW Golf R, which was so cool with the Hulk treatment and the AMG GT S. Road conditions and actual precipitation were enhanced in this edition of Forza, adding even more realism to the already exceptional simulator. Hands down, Forza Motorsport 6 is the best simulator on the market and the historic nature of this game makes it the “poster on the wall” for future generations of drivers. TOYZ GUIDE VIDEOGAMES REVIEW by Damola Batman Arkham Knight

As the saying goes, you “save the best for last”, and with Batman Arkham Knight the team at Rocksteady Studios did just that, as they put a bow on their work on the Arkham series. The final chapter of the Arkham series builds on the open world gameplay and the multiple play modes that have made this series not only popular, but arguably the best superhero gaming franchise ever. The final chapter of the series includes a multitude of ways to play and adds, for the first time, a drivable Batmobile that can alternate between going fast in pursuit and becoming a tank for battle. Though the Joker is dead, he still makes several appearances and that does not prevent Harley Quinn from picking up the mantle. You can even play as Harley Quinn via a DLC in her own storyline or you can play as Batgirl with Nightwing assisting in another storyline. You can also play as the Red Hood in the GameStop exclusive DLC that will become available to all Premium Edition and Season-Pass DLC owners in the future. In the main storyline you have over 50 costumes and can enlist the help for the Red Robin. You can play as Azrael, which is a nice touch in bringing back the team in various forms for this grand finale. A cool

mode also exists that allows you to play as Alfred, which is awesome. Scarecrow is the ultimate villain and plays the primary antagonist in this game; however, you still have Penguin, Two-Face, Harley Quinn and others to contend with. Made strictly for next gen and PC platforms, Batman Arkham Knight combines the best of the series and adds the mobility of the Batmobile to make for the best experience yet in a superhero game. The series has been the standard for years and one can only imagine what Rocksteady will do with their rumored involvement in a new Superman series of games. One trusts Warner Brothers Studios will enlist the right partner to reimagine the future of Batman in gaming and with next year’s Batman vs Superman movie, one can imagine a Batman game in a Superman game in the future. Bar none, Batman Arkham Knight has been one of, if not the best game of the year and is worthy of the Premium Edition purchase for just under $100 which includes 6 months of DLC’s. FALLOUT 4 WITH PIP-BOY EDITION The best open world game returns with even more postapocalyptic nuclear fallout fun if you can call a nuked planet 200 years in the future fun. I can’t rave enough about Fallout 4 and this time around you can play endlessly because there are always things to explore and side missions you can do. I love to collect things, for you never know what may arise in the future, but each gamer can adapt their style to their tastes. The Pip-Boy is truly the most awesome thing in gaming since the gun in Duck Hunt. I was able to pair a Samsung Galaxy S5 and also an iPhone 6s and use my Pip-Boy from my wrist. I loved customizing my character and spouse and leveling up is great as you can enhance certain aspects of your character. Having an actual Pip-Boy truly makes the game-playing experience and brings an added realism to the title. Fallout 4 is a must-have game that is literally hours of fun. Treyarch is back again at the helm of Call of Duty Black Ops III and the results are as expected from the fabled studio. Call of Duty Black Ops III brings with it many firsts including playable female characters that you can customize. You can also customize male characters and weapons. The third edition of the Black Ops series brings about cyborg warfare as you can have robotic parts and the ability to control objects. You can run on walls, use drones, and jump. I played on Steam on my PC with the Duke Nukem and Zombie versions and had such a blast. Multiplayer mode returns as usual. For more information, visit www. callofduty.com/blackops3.

GAME OF THRONES All is not well in Westeros and the action picks up in one of the most horrific scenes of violence, “The Red Wedding”. In this role-playing game you are aligned with the Starks and have to fight your way out of peril. The AI adjusts to your decisions as you make your mark in the House Forrester. Your character resembles Rodrik, in the sense he is a noble squire. I liked the gameplay use of weapons and overall story. As a Game of Thrones fan who is itching to see what happens next and if the show will surpass the books in storytelling, this game allows for you to engage and actually craft your own piece of legend in Westeros. TOYZ GUIDE VIDEOGAMES REVIEW by Damola Assasins Creed Syndicate

In what has become an annual ritual, Assassin’s Creed is back with new game play and a new setting and environment with Syndicate. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate takes place in London during the Industrial Revolution and you can interchange between playing twins Jacob and Evie and navigate a world of factories, trains and the trappings of the Industrial Revolution. You can actually interchange characters within game play. I initially got to play Syndicate during E3 and was impressed then by the ability to travel the city with a new rope launcher feature.

I have to be honest. I used to play basketball daily from my pre-teens to my 20’s. I even went to Syracuse, in part, because of their great basketball legacy. However, I haven’t played in years and the longer time passes, the harder it gets. Thankfully, NBA LIVE 16 from EA Sports has a great new feature that may just get me to dust off those old Reebok pumps. Now, you can play Pro-Am LIVE online with other players and choose real-world courts throughout North America to play on. So when people trash-talk after beating you online, you can challenge them to an actual game of 21 to settle the score. Beside the ability to play live games on real courts, there is a greater amount of realism. You can scan your face into the game with your mobile device via GameFaceHD in the NBA LIVE Mobile app and customize your player. So, I’m a lefty from Boston, Massachusetts who went to Syracuse and plays for the Celtics, home of the “Banner Men” (my coined phrase). ESPN partners to bring the play-by-play action. TOYZ GUIDE GADGETS REVIEW by Damola SAMSUNG GALAXY S5 (SPRINT)

The Samsung Galaxy S5 was built upon the exceptional performance of the Galaxy S4, though not enough for many who expected an equal leap like the one made from the advances of the Galaxy III. The S5, in my view, is a rigorous and ambitious bridge to the S6 which brings along with it a total product transformation with different materials and curved displays. I have been spending a considerable amount of time with the S5 on the Sprint network with its unlimited data plan and my experience has been exhilarating. In fact, several family members now own the S5 including my son in college for whom I got one on the Spirit network and he absolutely loves it - often watching animated videos on his phone and streaming music! Now the question become why. Beyond the Snapdragon 800 series processor, the super AMOLED display, heart rate monitor, water-resistant case, 4K recording capability, Android 5.0 OS, and smart remote feature, is the way it fits within the Samsung ecosystem. The S5 is a perfect companion for a Samsung Smart TV and I was able to mirror the S5 screen to my TV, pair the phone to a Logitech K480 keyboard and basically operate my phone like a computer using Office apps. I was even able to type this review on the phone through the Office app, using its own keyboard. We have shot countless test drives of automobiles with the Galaxy S5 and find the video recording quality exceptional. In fact, the S5 became my most essential equipment through my travels as a journalist. Where I saw the S5 resonate best, however, was in bringing people into Android’s ecosystem. In addition to my 18-year-old son, my 60+-year-old mother who has an S5 on the Verizon network along with my brother and his wife who are both doctors and countless other relatives have made the switch during my review period and are endeared to the S5, many preferring it to Apple products. The S5 has made converts to Android as the best combination of features and accessibility and with the S6 now available, you can get tremendous deals on the S5. In my view, it is a perfect phone to be introduced to Android and an essential companion to a Samsung TV. For more info, visit www.samsung.com.

MOTOROLA G REPUBLIC WIRELESS

NO contract. When Google acquired Motorola I saw great potential for synergies of their long-term visions. Motorola is a leader in set-top boxes, modems, wireless equipment and mobile phones. Google with Android, Google Fiber, and Android TV most certainly could have leveraged the expertise of Motorola and built in their market experience, but it wasn’t meant to be. Motorola was sold piece by piece with the mobile unit going to Lenovo, who I’m confident will do a good job of building on what was becoming a remarkable competitor in the smartphone market. Motorola has capitalized on expanding mobile phone access through affordable, capable mobile devices with no better example than the Moto G. I can’t rave enough about the Moto G with its Qualcomm 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor. The Moto G runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat and I opted to experience the Moto G on Republic Wireless, a truly revolutionary phone company. Offering plans that range from as low as $5 a month for unlimited talk, text and data on Wi-Fi only to unlimited talk, text and data on Wi-Fi and 3G all for $25 a month – yes just $25! Though 4G LTE costs $40. One can truly enjoy the immense capabilities of the Moto G. Though 8GB (which is actually much less after software installation) was not enough memory for my usage, the Kingston 32GB DataTraveler served as a great companion. Combined you can spend under $200 for an off-contract phone with a ton of storage, and a phone bill of just $25 a month. What could beat that? For more info, visit www.republicwireless.com.

LG G4 REVIEW

Smartphones have ultimately surpassed computers and for many they serve as the primary source for getting online. The LG G4 builds on the success of the G3 and adds a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor that features 64-bit architecture and also 3GB or RAM. I had a few weeks with the G4 and what sticks out beyond its performance and exceptional display quality, is its flexibility and functionality. With the LG G4 you can swap out your battery and add more memory to the onboard 32GB via a microSD card. performance. The G4 features a 5.5” Quad HD display which I have used frequently to watch videos on the go from my XFINITY TV Go app. The form factor is excellent with a much more solid build than its competitors. You can actually swap the back cover for a sleek leather design. I especially like the 16-megapixel camera and found great use for it regarding videos of my test drives of various automobiles in addition to covering the vast amount of events I attend. Battery consumption is great and there is a Smart Power Saver Mode for when you have less than 30% power. You can also benefit from the removable, replaceable battery that allows you to easily swap batteries. I also like the cover apps which I was able to download and use with the exclusive G4 cover. If you are looking for a stylish, capable, and powerful personal computer in the form factor of an elegant 5.5-inch phone, the LG G4 is for you. For more information, visit www.lg.com.

TOYZ GUIDE GADGETS REVIEW by Damola ASUS ZENFONE 2 The ASUS ZenFone 2 is truly the best performance vs. price bargain on the market with a Quad-Core Intel® Atom™ processor and 2GB of RAM at a price of $199 off-contract. There really is nothing on the market that can match it. The model with the 64-bit 2.3GHz Super Quad-Core Intel® Atom™ Z3580 processor and 4GB of RAM – yes 4GB of RAM, is in a league of its own and is priced at $299. I tested this model globally as I traveled to China to the CES Asia conference in Shanghai and visited Hong Kong and Shenzhen along the way. I traveled with an iPhone and a Samsung phone but the ZenFone 2 was the easiest to use globally. In Hong Kong, I was able to get a SIM card at the airport and easily use it in port 1 for data which turned out to be a lifesaver. Once I got to Shenzhen in Mainland China, I was able to get a SIM card from a street vendor and it was easy for him to remove the back, pop in the Mainland-China-ready SIM and get me both voice and data. Use of social apps like WeChat was great and I was able to take great selfies. During my trip, including my breathtaking experience aboard a Maglev train in Shanghai that went 429 km/h, the 64GB of on board storage was great and even greater was the ability to add more storage via a microSD card. 200GB cards are now commercially available and deals can be had for 128GB cards for under $80. The power of the ZenFone 2 shouldn’t be underestimated. To give perspective on the processor, I built a PC for my son recently with an Intel® Celeron® processor, the J1900 with a Quad-Core and I added 4GB of RAM. The Zenfone 2 is more powerful and has been optimized to take advantage of the Android 64-bit software in Lollipop. Gaming is also great as I was able to play mobile Madden and enjoy other games when I attended E3. The ZenFone 2 pushes the boundaries of what mobile games can do and you can actually sync to your PC via the ASUS PC Link app. I haven’t been able to put the ZenFone 2 down since I got it and in fact, it has replaced my iPhone 5s as my secondary phone. The 4GB of RAM and the Intel® inside is really transformative and at a starting price of $199 with global support, it is a no-brainer to acquire. My colleague, in fact, got one for his recent trip to China and loves the phone. It is not hard to be converted and experience the Zen. For more info, visit www.ASUS.com.

TOYZ GUIDE GADGETS REVIEW by Damola WINDOWS LUMIA 1520 REVIEW

»»»»»»»

I have been a fan of Windows phones since the Palm Treo 800w. I found the ability to be productive, edit documents and enjoy multimedia content to be fascinating. From my Treo 800w I graduated to the HTC Touch Pro2 and gave my then 12-year old son my Treo 800w as he began high school and he loved it! The Touch Pro2 was a game changer for me with its Windows 6.1 software and tilted screen. I decided to abandon my Blackberry at the time and use the Windows 6.1-powered device for my many needs. Windows Mobile then detoured and the rest is history as many executives are no longer even with Microsoft, which now brings me to the Lumia 1520 and its Windows 8.1 software. I have to be honest, I wasn’t the greatest fan of the 8.1 OS but I enrolled into the Microsoft Insiders Program and got Build 10512 of Windows 10 Mobile. I have been blown away by the potential and in fact, my son has decided to use Windows 10 to develop on an Intel-based mobile device he is working on. The Cortana digital assistant is the best and paired with the fast Microsoft Edge browser, the Lumia 1520 is the best mobile device I have to do searches on. I also love the Xbox integration and I was able to use it as a remote for my Xbox One. The specs are great with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad core processor with 2 GB of RAM, built-in wireless charging, a 20.0 MP camera (that came in handy for an impromptu interview with the President of Cadillac), and a 6-inch Full HD screen with a very durable build quality. I traveled nationwide with this device and it is a trooper. Coverage was great with AT&T 4G LTE and I love the ability to expand the provided 16 GB of storage, which is a disappearing feature these days. The Lumia 1520 has great potential and as a whole, Windows 10 and its ecosystem bears watching. For more information, visit http://www.microsoft. com/en-us/mobile/phone/lumia1520/

HTC ONE A9

With the One A9, HTC went in a different direction and the results are bearing fruit. I have been testing this device for a number of weeks and it has become my go-to device for capturing video, using social media, and playing music. I recorded the best videos with it at a recent Roots concert I attended, better than videos I’ve recorded with other devices I’ve used and reviewed. The 13MP camera is exceptional and we used it to shoot some incredible shots of the Mercedes-AMG GT S. The HTC One A9 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 64-bit Octa-core processor with an additional 32GB of onboard memory and 3GB of RAM. Frankly, I despise not being able to add more flash memory to most of the premium devices on the market, so the One A9 with the ability to do so, has been a godsend as I have been using this device to interview executives and capture videos of our auto reviews. There are pro settings on the camera that allow you to adjust the ISO settings. The auto-focus feature is exceptional and when using it at 15-20 feet from the stage, I was able to re-focus and get sharp images. The sound is great and through HTC Connect I am able to pair it with my Pioneer AV system. The One A9 also comes with Android’s latest OS, Marshmallow 6.0 with HTC Sense. The One A9 costs $499.99 unlocked and is available on carriers like Sprint for $20/month on lease. I have been able to find this phone for sale in the $430-range on Amazon.com, so shop around. LG G3 REVIEW

When you venture to use the LG G3, you might say that the journey is now complete of smartphones replacing personal computers. I spent the better part of nearly three months with this essential hand-held computer and was amazed at its performance. I was able to do without a laptop and reduced my use of a tablet due to the G3. The G3 features a 5.5-inch Quad HD display, which I used frequently to watch videos on the go through my XFINITY TV Go app. The model I reviewed happened to be on Sprint which I use personally and enjoy the unlimited data plan with. The form factor is excellent with a much more solid build than its competitors. I especially like the 13MP camera and found great use for it to record videos of my test drives of various automobiles in addition to covering the vast amount of events I attend. The G3 can also record videos in 4K quality. The 3GB of RAM has been one of my favorite aspects of the G3 as I was able to have a better experience on social media especially Twitter due to its ability to process data faster and keep multiple apps open. Battery consumption is great and there is also a saving mode for when you have less than 30% power. I also like the Knock Code function as a security feature to unlock the phone. Memory space can total in excess of 2TB theoretically if you have a 2TB MicroSD card, but that technology is not available and the closest readily available 128GB card is expensive. Nearly 100GB is possible, though, and affordable when you combine 32GB of internal memory with a 64GB microSD Card which can be purchased at class 10 speed for under $30. The G3 comes with Android 5.0 Lolipop, 3000 mAh battery capacity, and Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 2.5 Ghz Quad-Core processor. The LG G3 is a stylish, capable, and powerful personal computer in the form factor of an elegant 5.5-inch phone. For more info, visit www.lg.com.

KINGSTON HYPERX CLOUD HEADSET The Kingston HyperX Cloud pro-gaming headset is one of the best available and proved to be versatile and multiple-purpose during our testing. One of the greatest benefits of the HyperX headset is the available accessories that come with the packaging that allow for great online multi-player gaming. We were able to use the HyperX for music production, DJing and gaming both on the PS4 and our own custom-built rig. The headset has amazing clarity and the detachable mic works well. PLANTRONICS BACKBEAT PRO BLUETOOTH HEADPHONES I must admit, it is not often that the hype of a product is as advertised, but the Plantronics BackBeat PRO headphones exceed expectations. I had a chance to use them on my trip back from CTIA Mobility Week and to sum them up in a simple word, they are a godsend. The Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC-enabled over-ear headphones are superior and more comfortable than others I have reviewed. I was able to change songs by simply turning a knob on the headset and also adjust the volume in a similar way. I could also answer calls and activate the Active Noise Canceling function. I was able to pair both an iPhone 5S and a Samsung Galaxy S4 simultaneously and alternate between the two easily. The sound quality is superb with a great balance of mid range and lows. I listened to Demi Lovato, Marvin Gaye, Mos Def, 2 Chainz and more while I had a few hours between flights heading back to the east coast. Users have a range of 100 meters to stream music wirelessly and I was able to charge my devices and listen to music without having to “hog the wall”. During my flight, the BackBeat Pro headphones were wonderful as I listened to sounds through the Relaxia app on my iPhone and managed a couple hours of sleep in my cramped seat. These are a truly great pair of cans and at a price of $249.99 they’re a must-buy. For more info, visit www.plantronics.com.

TOYZ GUIDE Lenovo Y 50-70 PC Review by Damola

LENOVO Y50-70 TOUCH LAPTOP Laptops are the new desktops. With the size of storage, the capability of mobile processors, the integration of optimal graphics cards, and portability, laptops have been outselling desktops for a number of years. Laptops now face a threat from tablets and 2 in 1’s, but that is a discussion for another day. The advent of the Chromebook is also a new phenomenon, which brings us to the review of the Lenovo Y50-70 Touch laptop. For myself, with the myriad options available to simply get online, edit documents, and watch movies, a higher stander and more comprehensive functionality are key in addition to multimedia production, gaming, portability, communication, and high-definition media viewing. The Lenovo Y50-70 Touch achieves all of my desires and more with an Intel i7-4700 processor with 2.4 GHz, 16 GB of RAM, an Ultra HD 4K 15.6” screen, an NVIDIA 860M graphics card, an HD webcam, and JBL speakers. I traveled the world with the Y50-70 Touch including my trip to CES Asia in Shanghai, China and the Y50-70 Touch was a great companion on my 15-hour flight for watching movies. I was also able to Skype friends and family back home with the HD webcam. What really sold me on the Y50-70 touch was it capability to perform intensive tasks like Adobe InDesign, while also playing games like Destiny on Origin. My son has the Apple Macbook Air and this laptop, though similarly priced at $1599 (though you can get it directly from the Lenovo website at slightly over $1000), is a heavy-duty performer. I’ve been spending months with the Y50-70 touch and went from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, which quite frankly is an entirely different experience. The new features of Windows 10 combined with the Y50-70 Touch allowed me to play games from my Xbox One, Steam, and Origin even better. The display quality was incredible as I played the Netflix app to watch the Narco series. There aren’t many sources currently for 4K content but that will change momentarily as even mobile devices now shoot in 4K. So with the combination of an Ultra HD display, great graphics card, top-line CPU and the ability to do intensive tasks like edit photos while streaming music, surfing the web, and even web chatting for a price around $1000 purchased directly from Lenovo, you will have a hard time finding a better laptop than the Lenovo Y50-70 Touch. TOYZ GUIDE PC REVIEW TOYZ TOWER MULTI-MEDIA PRODUCTION AND GAMING PC I have been involved in the multi-media business for over 20 years. Prior to editing and publishing magazines, we published music and in fact, we still publish and produce videos from time to time, so the needs of multi-media entrepreneurs are quite familiar to us. In addition, many of the people who work with us are entrepreneurs who range from photographers and videographers to web developers, graphic designers, system builders, game developers and directors who are above all else, some of the most discerning in terms of multi-media content. With this in mind, we set out to build an ultimate production rig with a budget of less than $1,500. The rig was to have superb gaming capabilities, video editing capabilities and music production capabilities in addition to productivity, communication tools and superb multimedia sharing and streaming capabilities. Needless to say, we had a tall task. David and the entire team at Kingston were able to help us get started with critical components like the V300 240GB SSD drive, the engine that would drive our system. All of our software and operating system would be on this drive so speed and durability were critical. Components of the Toyz Tower Multi-Media Production and Gaming PC: Intel Core i5-4590 Processor

Z87X-UD4H. Our concerns were for the availability of expansion ports, the ability to display 4K, sound quality, output and most of all durability. With over 10 USB 3.0 ports and Gigabyte’s well-earned reputation for gaming, we were thrilled. Speaking of gaming, we used an Msi GeForce GTX 960, one of NVIDIA Maxwell architecture’s latest graphics cards and ran with 2GB GDDR5 support for 4 concurrent displays and integrated game streaming. This card is capable of playing all the latest games such as Call Of Duty: Black Ops III and Titanfall at the maximum setting. With so much computing power, a power source becomes imperative and for that we went with a Corsair CX600M which has 600W of power, more than enough for our rig. I especially found the multiple power ports helpful and perfect for our motherboard, which allows for more expansion later. For all of these components we needed a case, so we went with the Thermaltake Versa H22 Special Edition Mid-tower. Fans were important, as were durability, ease of assembly, slot expansions and drive bays. We added our own fans and went with blue LEDs for a great effect. Then came our networking needs and we went with GIGABYTE GC-WB867D-I which has Intel 7260 integrated along with Dual Band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. With Intel we also got Wi-Fi Direct that allows for screen sharing which is great when you have connection speeds of up to 867 Mbps. Finally, we added a Seagate 2TB drive with 64MB of cache and 7200 RPM speed with 6GB/s. This allows for great performance and storage for files and games. We also added an LG 16X SATA Blu-ray burner.

KINGSTON HYPERX SAVAGE SSD Many moons ago I was known as the galactical atom-spitting hero, Da Great Deity Dah, and I released 4 records to some acclaim in the 90s. 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the Life or Death EP and as such, fans have reached out to me about finding old vinyl and unreleased music. This brings me to the HyperX Savage solid-state drive from Kingston. I needed to digitize old ADAT tapes to be able to mix and master songs digitally and get some material to my fans who have been actively posting old material on YouTube. Using the Toyz Tower multimedia gaming rig we built, I used the HyperX Savage SSD with Adobe Audition software and a Behringer FCA1616 audio interface to digitize hours of tapes, eight tracks at a time. The HyperX performance was impeccable with an ability to export tracks to Wave files in a matter of seconds, literally. The 480GB capacity was more than adequate to store over 50 songs, each featuring 16 tracks of music. Read and write speeds are up to 560MB/s and 530MB/s respectively with a SATA 3.0 capability of 6GB/s. I love the accompanying installation kit which includes an enclosure along with screwdrivers and a bracket for 3.5” bays. You also get complimentary Acronis True Image HD software to clone drives if necessary. The HyperX Savage 480GB SSD is available at www.kingston.com and retailers like www.amazon.com.

From a pricing standpoint we were able to get to our targets, but pricing is only one part of the equation. The real objective is performance and in this category our rig excelled. Running Titanfall at max specs Corsair CX600M ATX Power Supply $69 while simultaneously running Photoshop on another screen was a breeze. With this you can have someone running Steam on a mobile device. In fact, we were MSi GTX 960 $249 able to test a device my son is prototyping and play GIGABYTE Intel GA-Z87X-UD4H Motherboard Call of Duty while doing photo editing on another screen on the system. For a small business this means $160 you can do things remotely, share screens, and even watch movies and game simultaneously while on the GIGABYTE GC-WB867D-I Dual Band Wi-Fi + same system. That capability is a new paradigm that Bluetooth 4.0 Network Card with Intel 7260 is transformative. Adapter inside $33.99 With Microsoft Windows 10 as our operating system we used a variety of production software from Art Age Microsoft Windows 10 $99.99 to Serato to the Adobe suite of tools. Video editing was also easy and I will give a more detailed review Seagate Barracuda Desktop Kit 2TB 7200 of Corel. Building around Kingston was really the catalyst for the project, actually making it possible. RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6Gb/s $99.99 16GB of RAM and an SSD with 450 Mbps provided Thermaltake Versa H22 Special Edition the multi-tasking capabilities and the speed to reach our goals and the components Kingston supplied got Mid-tower Case $49.99 the process going. We took 8 weeks to find all of our LG 16X Blu-ray Disc Burner $49.99 components and build our system. We are considering doing 100 systems for $1,500 each depending on reader response. If interested, contact us at We also got a pair of 8GB HyperX FURY Red memory toyznation@live.com. sticks, giving us 16GB of RAM with a max clock speed of 1866MHz. Both components performed admirably while the ability to perform multiple functions simultaneously was critical as was speed. We chose an Intel i5-4590 as our processor which has a clock speed of 3.3GHz and 6MB of cache. It is a 4th generation Haswell with integrated Intel HD Graphics 4600, 4 cores and the ability to overclock to 3.7GHz. Kingston HyperX FURY Red Series 16GB 1866MHz Kit $159.99

ZAGG POWER AMP 18

Portable power has become a necessity for virtually everything in our lives. We use phones to pay for food and other items, to tell us where we are going and to like things up. As we use our devices for these tasks, however, they consume power and recharging them can become an issue. ZAGG makes great devices to solve these issues and others, such as having lights when a power outage occurs. I live in Appalachia so issues of mobile power and lights are of great concern to me in addition to the ability to charge multiple devices. The Power Amp 18 with 18000mAh is able to charge up to three devices simultaneously with its three USB ports. Another great feature is the ability to charge using 2.4A for rapid charging, which my Samsung Galaxy S7 supports. The Power Amp 18 also has a nice grip and is great to have in your vehicle for emergencies. I can’t rave enough about the Power Amp 18 which has become a great companion during my many travels. The Power Amp 18 costs $99.99 For more information, visit www.zagg. com.

2016 FCA WHAT’S NEW “OPEN HOUSE”

On a wet day in West Virginia, at the Summit Point Motorsports Park, a group of journalists including myself got to experience the FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) product line including Jeeps, RAMs, of course Hellcats and a Viper. Rain is perfect mudding weather and in West Virginia, it’s almost sacrilegious to not go mudding with a 4X4 which I got to do in a RAM truck. Off-roading was not all that was on the menu, however, as we had track time and I got to drive the incredible Charger SRT Hellcat. I will forever remember the experience as I was able to drive straightaway and experience the raw power in the 4-door sedan. 707 horses rapidly ate up the track and it became evident why the inventory sold out this past year. There were also road driving opportunities. I wanted to get behind the Viper but it was unavailable due to a wreck. Everyone left safely, though. FCA has had an incredible streak of sales growth and experiencing their product line makes it clear why that’s the case. I look forward to FCA’s next debut of an aggressive slate of vehicles including crossovers with Maserati and sedans with Alfa Romeo. For more information, visit www.fcagroup.com.

BF GOODRICH ARE YOU DRIVE ENOUGH TOUR DC STOP On a beautiful autumn day at FedExField in Landover, Maryland, I got to hang out with the great team at BFGoodrich along with regional dealers as we got to drive and experience the performance of BFGoodrich tires. Dealers had additional events like sales competitions and we were honored to have actual racecar drivers, who work for BFGoodrich, discuss everything tires and performance with us. A racecar driver actually drove from Nashville, Tennessee in a Trans Am. I got a chance to get behind the wheel of both a Mustang and a Scion FRS on both dry and wet autocross tracks. The experience was exhilarating. I also had a wonderful experience with the g-Force COMP-2 A/S tires. We got demonstrations on the best-selling KO series of tires and saw the KO2 tires and witnessed the extensive research and development that go into the tire. There were friendly competitions and leaderboards which brought out my fire and added to the great atmosphere of tire people and auto enthusiasts. 2016 PASSAT LAUNCH On a fall day in New York that was not the finest for the VW Group, executive Michael Horn, president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, stood strong and accepted responsibility for fixing emissions tests by manipulating equipment. Lenny Kravitz and the 2016 Passat still gave great performances, though, as the new model shone on stage with bolder and more aggressive styling. The 2016 Passat also features new interior upgrades with VW’s modular infotainment platform, MIB II, which has Apple CarPlay integration and touchscreen functionality. The Passat comes with two powertrain options including a 1.8L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 170 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque with an EPA rating of 38 mpg on the highway or a V-6 VR6 engine which makes 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 1.8T with automatic transmission starts at $22,440 and the V6 starts at $36,835. The 2016 Passat now carries even more weight for VW but by the looks of it the 2016 model seems up to the task. I look forward to driving it and evaluating the handling and performance upgrades. For more information, visit www.vw.com.

2016 MAZDA MIATA ( MX5) LAUNCH DC

On a beautiful day this past fall in Alexandria, Virginia, I gathered with my fellow auto journalists in the DC area at our monthly WAPA (Washington Automotive Press Association) event and got a chance to drive the allnew Mazda MX-5 and also speak to the team at Mazda. An exclusive interview with Rod McLaughlin, the MX-5 vehicle line manager, is also featured in this publication. The MX-5 is an icon and as such there was a lot of anticipation in regards to how the new car would evolve, how the KODO design language would be interpreted, and the difference SKYATIV would make on this platform. I got some short driving time and was impressed, though I would love to get more extended time with the vehicle to make a more constructive observation. The handling is exceptional and the integrated technology is class-leading. The MX-5 uses a 2.0 L 4-cylinder direct injection engine that makes 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque for a vehicle that weighs a little over 2300 lbs. The packaging now comes in three distinct trims: the Sport at $24,915, the Club at $28,600, and the Grand Touring at $30,065. A 6-speed sport automatic transmission with paddle shifters is available for each trim. Check out my interview with Rod McLaughlin for more details about the MX-5 and visit www.mazdausa.com.

BMW ULTIMATE DRIVING EXPERIENCE

With a list of over 90 Vehicles to drive, the BMW Driving Experience travels the country giving BMW customers a chance to experience the ultimate driving machine firsthand in an environment of a driving course and local driving. The experience includes a Teen Driving School, Street Drives, Autocross, and a Car Control Clinic. On a sunny Saturday I got to experience the Autocross and gave the X4 some hard paces through a well-designed course at FedEx Field in Maryland. The X4 I drove was well equipped with a sport package and the 300-hp engine which made for great dynamics as I joined a group of drivers that ranged from potential customers to current customers to members of the IHG hotel group’s Priority Club (of which I’m a member) through a new partnership with BMW. The IHG Group includes hotels like the InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inn, Staybridge Suites and many others. BMW customers such as my brother and several family members along with many I encountered on the driving experience will appreciate the rigors taken to ensure the ultimate driving experience and the track designed to highlight those efforts. I was able to test everything from acceleration to breaking, steering and stopping via a two-hour program that also included an introductory instruction before hitting the course. The X4 impressed me with its 300 HP. In the xDrive35i I drove, it was more than adequate to move the 4260lbs it weighs. You get an 8-speed automatic transmission and a plethora of safety technology. Other drivers were able to put the 3 series and 4 series through their paces and during the week, classes with the M series were also available at a $750 fee via the Car Control Clinic. For the Street Driving several models were on hand including the i3 and the 740, with the i8 on display for customers to get an up-close look at the technological marvel. For current customers it is a great chance to see other models and get behind the wheel and also make new friends with other customers. For prospective customers, it is a great chance to talk with experts on the technology, learn about new products like the i3 and i8 and learn what all the rave is about. TOYZ MAKERS

The convergence of gaming and the automotive industry has been a long time coming. As the graphics details in video games become more realistic and as hardware advances to points where it can handle the heavy computational duty required to simulate the driving experience, gaming studios have continued to push the boundaries of how much realism can be integrated into a driving simulation title. With last year’s release of the Xbox One console, gaming finally had a system with graphics and a CPU to fulfill the grand vision of simulated driving in an extremely realistic manner. I had a chance to check out the Forza Motorsport 6 booth at E3 and was quite impressed with the quality of visuals, the accuracy of the simulation, the modifications made to environments like the addition of rain, and most importantly the accuracy of the performances of the automobiles. The latter point was tremendously aided by the partnership with Ford for their new supercar, the GT, which is powered by an EcoBoost V6 engine that makes in excess of 600 horsepower. The partnership with Ford is an interesting development because it bears fruit for both parties. Beyond providing engineers with a system to simulate vehicle performance in a virtual world before track testing, it also allows gamers to join in on the fun and provide feedback that may become helpful in final calibrations of performance. It is like having millions of virtual engineers doing simulations. Ford literally gave Microsoft their CAD files to work with which is unheard of but speaks to the efforts to make this game the ultimate in driving simulation. We have had the opportunity to garner a lot of information on the design and engineering process of vehicles over the years and for this piece we spoke to Ford engineers and designers in addition to designers from the Forza Motorsport side. I had the pleasure of speaking to Creative Director of Forza Motorsport, Bill Giese, who was able to give us insight into the process of developing this game. Our dialogue is follows. We have edited for clarity. Damola Idowu: Working with Ford, their designers – we’d actually talked to their designers; they use a lot of game design engines to actually design vehicles like this. So talk about, from your perspective, from the game developers, how did that work out? Bill Giese: Well, Ford specifically was very unique in that nobody really knew the car existed. Even higher execs up at Ford didn’t even know it existed. And so, it was great to be able to get in the ground floor that early. There’s only like five of us in the studio that knew and so we had to develop systems. We knew we were having a Hero car and we tried to build certain things around it and being able to have to use code words and other cars to do it, it’s a very tricky process.

But working with Ford, unlike most manufacturers, we get all the CAD data so when we build our car we have this process called body and wipe. We get the base mold from the manufacturer. We get all of the data that they get from the dynos and all their engine stuff and we run that through our physics system. And so, with any relationship that we do with a Hero partner, they’ve been able to deliver some great things for us. Damola Idowu: So, moving on in that process then, were you using any virtual reality in some of the modeling of this? Bill Giese: So, not virtual reality, per se,, but the CAD data that we get, that’s all 3D scan modeling of the car and so we implement that right into our system. They get those files right over to us. Damola Idowu: Was there any going on to the driving grounds, trying to get some of that experience and how was (cont) 46• ownersillustrated.com

TOYZ MAKERS VIDEOGAMES EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola that interpreted into the game itself? Bill Giese: Just like anything else.... So, all the information we get – so we’ve got a great research team. They have the best job in the world where they get to travel around to millionaire’s garages and capture cars, go to dynos and get stuff. And so, they’re able to capture and get that information to be able to put that in the game. But normally, when we work closely with a partner, it’s very transparent. They give us all the information they have, all the data that they’re getting, all the data that they’re running is immediately handed off to us. Damola Idowu: So how long did that process take of working and interacting with Ford? Bill Giese: This one? It was probably...I’d say about a good year. Damola Idowu: So, from a year of… Bill Giese: ...from concept to what you’re seeing today. (E3 2015) Damola Idowu: How does that relate to other processes of the other Forza developments? Bill Giese: It’s pretty much the same. We know that when we start a new product, we want to find a great partner and we want to make sure that we’re able to highlight and show off the car in a very special and unique way. And so, we really try to do it as early as possible so that we can, again, trying to get in early on the announce of the car, it’s incredibly hard to do. There’s so many moving gears to get right.

Bill Giese: Our Forza Tech engine? Damola Idowu: Yes. Bill Giese: Absolutely. Obviously, with the integration of night and wet and 1080p60, the inclusion of 3D tire walls, we’re doing a lot more with particulates. We’ve got birds. We’ve got barbecue smoke. We’re really trying to make the track feel more alive.

Damola Idowu: And then you were also talking about the new engine. Could you kind of get more in depth with that?

Damola Idowu: And then also, you have a simulator downstairs. [Are] there any third parties that are actually going to be able to allow consumers to get into that? Bill Giese: D-BOX is the company that makes that. You can actually buy that hydraulics there. I think it’s like $60,000 or something. It’s pretty high-end. The physics engine that runs through there is based off our code. Damola Idowu: And then obviously with Kinect and the HoloLens, one could imagine taking this into a more virtual experience. Bill Giese: I can’t wait to claim more of the HoloLens. I’m so excited. Damola Idowu: So, as a creative director with Forza, how could you imagine in your mind possibilities of things... Bill Giese: How much time do you have….. (laughs) Damola Idowu: Or if you could just toss us something- a nugget... Bill Giese: You get the idea, the concept of HoloLens- I’ve only done one demo. I’ve only been able to do the Halo Demo, but the concept of being able to project things out in front of you, the possibilities are endless. Damola Idowu: Yeah, and obviously the 3D sense and…

Damola Idowu: Could you foresee this going into a PC arena now, when you’re taking about HoloLens and Windows 10? Bill Giese: We’re always looking at that definitely now that Windows 10 is going to be streaming Xbox One games. Damola Idowu: ...In conclusion...so, for students and people that aspire to be able to one day work on that, what would you advise them to do? How would you advise them to prepare to get into game development?

Bill Giese: It’s fantastic, yeah.

Bill Giese: So, I dropped out of college. I went to work at Nintendo to answer phones before the internet of big things. The biggest thing I’ve learned more than anything is, if you love what you do and you work hard, you can do whatever you want. So if anyone wants, nowadays, you can do to any major college and there’s a curriculum for it – which is awesome. But what I find fascinating is people that want to learn all facets of it from not just development but to marketing to packaging to test, there’s so much that you can learn that makes your job even better. Damola Idowu: What are the free tools? Would you suggest they use Unity or Unreal Engine 4? Bill Giese: Absolutely. A lot of the guys that we look at for hiring internally are mod guys, guys that are just making stuff so any of the free tools, Unity and all that. Any of those mod guys, the process of making something, having it fail and learning from that is something that we do every single day so that’s what people have to do. They have to learn to fail to make it work better. Damola Idowu: Are these for DirectX 11 or DirectX 12? Bill Giese: This is DirectX 11. We’re now starting to look at DirectX 12 and we’re really excited for what we’re able to do with the possibilities of the future. Damola Idowu:Thanks so much.

JULIUS MARCHWICKI

CONNECTING FORD TO THE WORLD THRU SYNC

exclusive interview with Director of Asia-Pacific, Connected Vehicles and Services

48• ownersillustrated.com

Mobility will have dramatically changed by the year 2020. With the advent of carsharing, electrification, smartphone integration, and autonomous technology, cars have essentially become robots and by 2020 they will be able to drive themselves. Actually, cars can drive themselves now and also integrate many of the features found on smart devices so the questions become: How do you integrate these features? What standards should be adopted? How can the same ecosystem found in app development for mobile devices translate to the auto industry? To answer these questions is Julius Marchwicki from Ford, who is currently Director of Asia-Pacific, Connected Vehicles and Services. Prior to this position he was the Global Product Manager of SYNC AppLink at Ford Motor Company. I spoke to him at a Hackathon Ford was doing during CTIA a little over a year ago and thought that as these technologies become more prevalent, it will be interesting to see Ford’s vision as they recently announced a $4.5 billion plan for electric vehicles. Our dialogue follows. Julius Marchwicki: My name is Julius Marchwiki. I’m Ford’s global product manager for SYNC AppLink and SmartDeviceLink and so we are the producers of the in-vehicle and mobile phone SDKs that allow developers and our head units to talk to one another. Damola Idowu: … This is your very first developers’ conference... Julius Marchwicki: Right, yeah. Damola Idowu: Talk about that process and how did this come about? Julius Marchwicki: Sure, so it’s not just our first conference, it’s the automotive industry’s first developer conference. So that’s a fantastic piece of history that was really formed out of yesterday. So we had over 190 people in the room yesterday, standing room only at most times throughout the day. And really the idea for us was to bring developers together, teach them about our technology, teach them about our vehicles and how we as Ford want to drive an automotive view of connectivity to app developers and give them the pieces of information that they need to be successful and get access to new avenues inside the vehicle so that we can offer great products and services to our customers. Damola Idowu: So now, obviously, Microsoft had gotten in this space with Ford earlier. Before a lot of other manufacturers, you guys had SYNC. I’ve checked it out on Lincoln, checked it out on Ford products - good voice commands, speech to text – a lot of that integration, but now it seems like you’re doing a new shift. So talk about the evolution of SYNC with Microsoft to SYNC connected vehicle because are you using 4G LTE? Is it going to be a 3G connection? Are you doing your own MVNO? Kind of speak on that. Julius Marchwicki: Yeah, sure. So just maybe – there’s a lot of questions in there, so we’ll maybe - we’ll break them up. So our – the SYNC system is our in-vehicle platform and that is our infotainment platform. It runs our vehicle head units. It allows you to connect a consumer smart device to the interior of our vehicles so that you, for example, can get USB and Bluetooth connectivity to a consumer’s device. That’s what SYNC is and it’s a platform. It’s a software platform for us. The operating system for that platform is provided by Microsoft and Microsoft is still a partner of ours. The AppLink solution that we talked about during the developer conference yesterday is a set of APIs that developers on smart devices can use to leverage all that great platform connectivity on the SYNC system. So this isn’t about, kind of 3G, 4G LTE connectivity in our vehicles,

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola Idowu

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola

it’s about how a developer can create an app on a smart phone that a driver can use while they are driving using voice commands, the touchscreen, the steering wheel buttons and not have to fiddle with their phone while they’re driving. So that’s our view of connectivity. Your phone is connected. Your phone is 4G LTE-connected, as you speak. There’s no need for us to bring additional connectivity... Damola Idowu: …into the car, so it’s more of a Bluetooth packet-type solution… Julius Marchwicki: Exactly. Damola Idowu: …where you’re pushing the data connectivity from the phone and this just goes into the head unit and it’s tethered and it sort of allows people to do better functions, maybe remote start, maybe commands, directions… Julius Marchwicki: Not necessarily remote start, but it is a way for – for example, Spotify uses our technology to allow a customer to change playlists, search for artists, play our customers’ songs or music within their Spotify app and their Spotify account directly from their device and it goes a level beyond just standard Bluetooth or media streaming. Because you get voice-controlled access, because you get touchscreen access to the application using our in-vehicle HMI and using our steering wheel controls, a customer has more control and more personalization and choice of how they use applications on their device while they’re driving. So the functionality is really meant to extend the apps that a customer has on their smartphone into the vehicle and so it’s very much a…driving-centric type of interface and that’s what AppLink and SmartDeviceLink are all about. Damola Idowu: So where does Livio come into play because I think Ford had acquired Livio a short time before? Julius Marchwicki: Yeah. So we acquired Livio. Livio has a fantastic set of both engineering talent and technology. Damola Idowu: Yeah, we’d interviewed Jake. Julius Marchwicki: Yeah, sure. And so with Livio, we are actually using them to take the technology that we call AppLink and make that part of our open source efforts which we call SmartDeviceLink. SmartDeviceLink is an open source solution. We’re allowing any automaker, any head unit supplier, any device manufacturer, the ability to take the software that we have in our vehicles today and put that into their own vehicles, put that into their own head units inside cars so that they can then talk to the applications that live on customers’ smartphones. That’s where Livio is really playing a solid role for us as they are evangelizing on our behalf the technology and the vision of SmartDeviceLink. Damola Idowu: So Jake’s with you guys still? Julius Marchwicki: We don’t typically comment on personal matters, but Jake is no longer with Livio. Damola Idowu: Oh okay. But Livio the company and the solution is still ongoing with Ford and that’s a huge part of what you are going to do with the developers’ outreach? Julius Marchwicki: Yeah, absolutely. So Livio works with other automotive companies. They work with app developers. They are part of the Ford team and we work with them and they work with us on how we pursue and move our solutions forward. So they’re a fantastic talent and fantastic team and we’re happy to have them [as] part of the Ford family. Damola Idowu: …We’ve talked to a lot of different manufacturers. Everybody has a different approach. For example, Hyundai is using Google and they are putting that in their API, so it’s really a Google-based solution – Hyundai - Kia. GM has their own solution, really their own OnStar-based ARM technology. You are able to do a capacitive touch. You guys have your solution which evolved out of what you were doing with Microsoft. So for developers, is there something standardized that could apply or is it more like with each manufacturer – and you do have a large enough scale - I mean you’re selling…three - four million cars a year? So…it’s a large enough scale for it to be worth their while, but how do they go about looking at how do I start coding for this company? Julius Marchwicki: Yeah, and so that’s what we talked about yesterday at the developer conference and in fact, my presentation was about that problem - is that when you look at vehicle sales, it was estimated in 2013 that the auto industry globally sold 68 million vehicles. Compare that to 978 million smartphones. You are comparing 70 million to a billion and the numbers are vastly different. The problem compounds more, as you said, out of those 70 million vehicles, 10 million are one solution, 5 million are another solution and then as the car companies or the manufacturers get smaller, their solutions have less scale. What we talked about yesterday at the developer conference is SmartDeviceLink and SmartDeviceLink is Ford’s solution that we’ve opened up to industry, to allow them to use or take what is effectively a new open source standard. We believe that it is the right solution for the auto industry to take SmartDeviceLink and integrate it into whatever platforms or solutions they have in-vehicle, so that there is a standard in the automotive space. And we know that we are competing with the Googles and Apples of the world and their particular products, but for us, from an automotive perspective, SmartDeviceLink is the only automotive open source standard that we’re evangelizing and making available to other auto manufacturers. So part of our goal, to answer your question about developers, is to get more scale from a volume perspective. Ford offers millions of units a year that will work with SmartDeviceLink. We want other auto manufacturers, other suppliers to automotive manufacturers to take the SmartDeviceLink solution so that we get scale from developers so they create an app for SmartDeviceLink and those work across our vehicles and anyone else that adopts that as a technology. Damola Idowu: So…speaking from perspective, like my son’s at Carnegie Mellon, electrical/computer engineering, so it basically seems like moving forward, people that are studying mechanical engineer and computer science, this is going to be a real big core of how they are going to have to learn. So from an educational point of view, how do you now disseminate this information to the educators so that kids that are graduating are actually now capable or aware of what would be required to be able to better service what Ford’s looking for? Julius Marchwicki: Yeah, that’s a very interesting question. I’m not necessarily an expert on our recruiting processes. I know that when we recruit, we look for certain types of learning and experience and a lot of that is based on mobile technologies. So we’re looking for people that can develop Android apps or iPhone apps because that’s the kind of core of where software is moving. Software is very mobile. But that’s probably all I can comment on, on how we kind of communicate that. I’m unfortunately not the expert on how we communicate with universities around the world, but based on what we’re seeing come out of school and the resumes that come across my desk, it seems like people are getting the relevant experience to be successful. Damola Idowu: So what languages do people or would people need to code? Is it Java? Is it Python, C+? What kind of languages for Ford’s developers to be able to use to write API and write calls? Julius Marchwicki: …For our developers and for our developer program, we offer Java-based API for Android devices so part of the Android SDK is Java-based and then we offer an Objective-C API for iPhone-based solutions. But for the developers on my team and myself, everyone has a pretty broad knowledge of software development and the great thing about software development is if you know one language, usually the syntax of the language carries over to another so we have developers that know Python and C++ and .NET and C# and Java. So we have a wide variety of talents and skills, but for developers looking to create something for Ford right now, the two big ones are Objective-C and Java. ownersillustrated.com• 49

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola Idowu

Damola Idowu: So how would a developer or student or anybody looking to develop apps, how would they submit? How would they register? How would they go about the process of getting into your ecosystem? Julius Marchwicki: That’s a great question. Developer.ford.com. It’s as simple as that. You go in, sign up, agree to the terms and conditions. There’s no cost to join. Once you’ve created an account and logged in, you’ll have access to our SDKs, our tools, our documentation, best practices, tips and tricks. You’ll have effectively all the resources that are available to you to create an application that connects to a vehicle head unit, a Ford vehicle head unit equipped with AppLink and create an experience based on the APIs that we provide.

Damola Idowu: How about virtual emulators and testing? Julius Marchwicki: Yeah we do have virtual emulators that are available for download online. We also have SmartDeviceLink emulators that are available at the Genivi website, that’s projects.genivi.org. Damola Idowu: How do you spell that? Julius Marchwicki: Projects-dot-G-E-N-I-V-I-dot-org and once you have that, you can go there and build what is effectively an in-vehicle head unit that is SmartDeviceLink-capable and you can use that as a test bench or you can request a physical piece of hardware from Ford which we call a TDK or a technology development kit. And those units, you can actually – there is going to be ten teams from our developer conference hackathon. Ten teams are going to take a TDK home with them and be able to work on that through the next two months before the L.A. auto show. So yeah, we have a wide variety of software and hardware-based solutions for developers to test against. Damola Idowu: How about coordinating hackathons? So how does that go, if people want to coordinate one or integrate some of these solutions to kind of get minds together? Julius Marchwicki: So we’ve done a…number of hackathons over the last couple of years. This was the first here in Las Vegas at our developer conference… Damola Idowu: Yesterday. Julius Marchwicki: We had one that went on for 12 hours and it will go on for the next two days in segments during the show. We’ve done hackathons in China. We’ve done hackathons in Europe. We’ve done hackathons in Brazil. So we’ve had a pretty wide, a wide array. Keep your eye out on developer.ford.com to understand where we’ll be next and where you can join us and kind of work with our vehicles and the hardware that we have to offer. Damola Idowu: So basically to do one, though, you would just basically need like the TDK to be able to work and get minds? Julius Marchwicki: Yeah, well, so you can use the TDK, but the AppLink emulator that’s available on our website is also a great tool to use to get started and it’s free to download so there’s no cost involved. You can start immediately, kind of getting an experience of what it’s like to use our software. Damola Idowu: Yeah, because I was thinking if students wanted to coordinate one and what would they need…because this is new and this is really fascinating and this is the first year. So you have different campuses...and this is a good way for them to kind of get access to it, play with the technology, see what they come about and then also…you guys are [easy] to access so they can be able to keep a dialogue... Julius Marchwicki: Super easy - developer.ford.com. There’s forums. We have a Reddit page with code snippets that the team can direct you to, so we do have a significant amount of resources available at that website. Damola Idowu: …How much are you putting on the API…Obviously Ford has the self-driving with the parking…I mean the self-parking, audio signals, turning, lane departure, lane assist. So how far are you opening up your APIs? Julius Marchwicki: Not quite that far. So you can’t control a steering. You can’t control the gas or brakes, but we do allow some access to vehicle data for development so you can get things like vehicle location and speed. You can get things like accelerator position, kind of gear status. There’s some body information that’s available: So, are the doors open? Are the seatbelts buckled? Those are the types of things that a developer can get access to, but that’s read-only. There isn’t much that... Damola Idowu: Of the calls and their send backs. Julius Marchwicki: Yeah, exactly. And then we also have APIs that allow you to speak to the driver, to listen to voice commands. There are ways to write to the screen. There are ways to alert the driver. So there’s a pretty comprehensive set of APIs that allow you to bring a very unique experience to [the driver]. Damola Idowu: Just not a lot of control of the mechanics. Julius Marchwicki: Yeah, absolutely. That’s something that we don’t allow with the APIs today. So that’s something that I think won’t come anytime soon, but worth an investigation on our side. Damola Idowu: No problem at all, thank you very much. Julius Marchwicki: Thank you. 50• ownersillustrated.com

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola Idowu

The past generation of vehicles by BMW were designed under the stewardship of the legendary Chris Bangle. His signature rear-end treatment received both praise and scorn, yet sales triumphed. Chris is no longer with BMW and the Chief of Design duties have been assumed by Karim Habib who is bringing an inspiring language to the vast BMW portfolio that includes Mini and Rolls-Royce. We had a chance to speak to him earlier in his career before he took leadership of the design team. He had been working on the gorgeous CS concept which now is interpreted in the new 7 Series and other cars in the portfolio. I include our dialogue below and also an excerpt of some thoughts he shared with BMW internal media about the new 7 Series.

Sculpting the future of BMW Idowu: So talk to us a little bit about the CS. with a UNIQUE and Damola Karim Habib: …Is there anything you want to know more about the design? Idowu: Inspiration. Let’s start off with the inspiration. ICONIC APPROACH Damola Karim Habib: You know, this car is meant to be above the 7 Series. That’s the real flagship for BMW and for me, the inspiration is like real

exclusive interview with luxury and elegance, like a lot of it coming from…this pretty sensual culture from Italian cars and sculpture. If I have one key word, it’s BMW Head of Design sculpture; it’s movement in surfaces; it’s light and shade; and that would be pretty much what inspired me…

Damola Idowu: …I mean, that is one of the most breathtaking concepts. In fact, that’s why we say, ʻconcepts we love’ - one of the most breathtaking concepts from the design language to the flowing lines - from the interior. What inspired the interior? Karim Habib: The interior was inspired by layers. The interior was done by a designer called Nadya…and it’s inspired by layers. Like if you look at it, you can see…there’s like a layer on top and even like on the console and the dash, the way the things are sort of one over the other…you can see these layers that are floating one above the other. Damola Idowu: Now this is being confirmed to be built now, right? Karim Habib: What we confirmed is that something based on that... Damola Idowu: Well, exactly. Karim Habib: ...is going to be built... Damola Idowu: So talk about that then, because as you’re saying, this is going to be a flagship above, but it will be under the Rolls-Royce but above the 7 series and there’s a gap where other manufacturers are taking advantage of. So talk about that and now moving forward what are some of the things that you try to carry on? Karim Habib: Well, I mean, it’s very much that spirit that we have in the show car that we’re going to carry across into production. It is really like the ultimate embodiment of BMW luxury and it’s done in elegance and super sportiness. Like Rolls Royce is real elegance, presence and status and this thing goes - it’s lower; it’s fast; it’s nimble, although it’s big. It’s a real driver’s car but in true BMW essence, you know, a driver’s car but extremely luxurious and that’s what we have here and that’s where we’re going to go for in production. Damola Idowu: Thanks so much Karim Habib Words on 7 Series Design via BMW PR The new BMW 7 Series is very important to us, of course, because it is the flagship. This car is particularly important to us because we feel we’ve really taken the definition of what a 7 Series is, actually quite a bit further than we have in the past. It’s really the first time that we addressed the 7 Series as a symbol of modern luxury so it really is what you’ve known always - the 7 series: dynamic, athletic, sporty. It looks muscular, but at the same time we talk about luxury, level of finesse and quality, and attention to detail that we’ve never seen before on a 7 Series. And some of the examples you can see of this obsession with detail, if you look at the front, first the kidneys, they are not only very big, very present, very proud, but it’s the first time that we actually do kidneys that open and close and kidneys are really the heart of any BMW in terms of design, so we’ve made a very important innovation really visible and something you can experience right away when you look at it. Another thing I’m particularly proud of is that we manage to do the Hofmeister kink in one piece for the first time on a four-door car at BMW so we’ve eliminated a very small shot line, but a nonetheless, very important shot line and it’s really one piece from the B-pillar to the C-pillar and coming back and that was something we invested quite a lot of energy and money in but exactly what is necessary for an iconic feature like the Hofmeister kink. One of the important aspects from the design point of view [of] the 7 Series is that this car is much lighter than the previous generation. This car is partly in carbon. It actually has a carbon core in it so we wanted to show that so we have a small badge in the B-pillar. When you open the car, you see a real carbon badge. But also, in terms of design, we made sure that the car illustrates that likeness. That’s why that even the body size [has] got a lot of big, generous surfaces, but it looks pretty lean and elegant and also, that’s a very important characteristic for the 7 Series. Every time we create a car, for me personally, it’s very emotional, but when it comes to the 7 Series, the flagship, I can say that today as we arrived, I saw two white 7 Series’ with the M Sport Pack from a distance and it felt really, very good. So it is, it’s something really unique and something that makes my job maybe the best job I could ever have.

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola Idowu

As Ford has divested all of their luxury brands, save for Lincoln, and shuttered the Mercury brand, the focus of the design team can be concentrated on their core products. In addition to slimming down the design portfolio, a change of leadership occurred recently as the legendary J Mays left to take some much needed time off after such a fabled career. Moray Callum, who has been with Ford since 1988, is now tasked with overseeing a portfolio that brings with it some unique challenges. Ford has gone all-aluminum with their F-150, entered the supercar category again with the GT, reintroduced an all-new Mustang, refreshed their compacts, entered China with Lincoln, and the most daring move yet, bet $4.5 billion on electrification with the goal of several models by 2020. Design is the first thing people see and with the innovations and future aspirations pursued by Ford, Callum has his hands full putting his own mark on the company and most importantly driving sales with cars that inspire emotion. A recent commercial emphasizes that point with a crowd forming around the GT and a child breaking the cycle. We had a chance to get a one-on-one with Callum. Our dialogue follows.

Damola Idowu: So Moray introduce yourself and what do you do with Ford?

Moray Callum: My name is Moray Callum. I’m vice president of design for Ford.

Damola Idowu: So talk about your career at Ford thus far.

MORAY CALLUM

DESIGNING THE BLUE OVAL OF THE FUTURE exclusive interview with The Vice President of Design for Ford Motor Company

Moray Callum: Well, I actually started at Ford in Europe, in Italy and in Ghia in 1988…so I’ve been at Ford for a while now. I’ve worked in Italy for a few years doing some concept cars and some [other] cars for Ghia and then in 1995 I moved to the states as a design manager. So I was a design manager and a design chief in the US and then in 2001 I actually went to Mazda. So when Ford and Mazda were still collaborating, I became head of design at Mazda between 2001 and 2006 and then returned to the states and…then was given the vice president’s job at the beginning of this year.

Damola Idowu: So which cars have you worked on? Obviously, the Mustang, but which cars [have] been in your portfolio in the past because Ford had a lot of brands?

Moray Callum: Yeah, well I obviously got a lot of the Mazdas from the first-generation Mazda3 up to the second-generation Mazda6, I was responsible for all the Mazdas at that point so the Miata, the MX-5, the Mazda5, the Mazda6, Mazda2 as well. So a lot of these cars I was responsible for the first generation.

Damola Idowu: And then now you are in charge of the whole portfolio, but Ford has now consolidated everything to one Ford vision.

Moray Callum: Ford and Lincoln…

Damola Idowu: Ford and Lincoln, that’s what I was getting to and in fact the EcoBoost engine that’s in the Mustang…the 2.3-liter EcoBoost that’s in the Mustang - there are some similarities to the 2.3 EcoBoost that’s in the MKC. So talk about that…how are you now re-designing the platform and shifting how you’re managing the resources that’s available in your portfolio?

Moray Callum: Well, obviously, Lincoln is a very important brand for us and I think you can see – you mentioned the MKC and I think you’ll see that we’re expanding. We’re expanding the difference between the Lincoln and the Ford products. If you look at the MKC, it’s just a product [link to] the Escape and the MKC - it’s lower, it’s wider, so the proportions have been changed with Lincoln so that obviously gives more work for us to actually differentiate the brand. So we’re really balancing the workload, prioritizing Lincoln in some areas in terms of the premium market and at the same time we have a lot of Ford products to do globally also.

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola

Damola Idowu: But with EcoBoost there has been a tremendous success for Ford. You’ve been able to get tremendous power and astonishing fuel-efficiency, I mean you’re able to put a 2.7-liter engine in [an] F-150 which is a heavy-duty and getting it to almost 9,000 pounds. [I’m] looking to see what that SAE is, obviously, and there’s estimates that you might even approach 30 miles per gallon on a pick-up without electrification. So what are you guys doing?

Moray Callum: Well I think, you know, obviously, I’m not the engine designer so you need to probably ask the engine guy that. But…we know that fuel economy is a major reason for everyone to buy a product. So we’re aiming for best-in-class fuel-economy in all the products we do so…the EcoBoost technology has really helped us achieve that. And I think the interesting thing with Mustang, for example…we are going to offer the 4-cylinder EcoBoost, but there are still a lot of traditionalists amongst us that will want the V8 as well, so we’ll also offer the V8 and the V6 option, too.

Damola Idowu: Of course. And speaking about design, so the Evo language which was the concept that was there… Moray Callum: The Evos, yes.

Moray Callum: Actually, the Evos car is actually really showing - demonstrating the design language we were going to launch on the (unclear) Fusion. So it was actually - it was done as really as an indicator for that. It was never seen as a Mustang proposal. A lot of people said is that a Mustang proposal but there never was a Mustang proposal. And quite frankly the Mustang needs to have its own design language. The Mustang is an icon in itself and we really try, you know, to separate the Mustang design language from everything else because people see it as purely Mustang and less part of the portfolio of the brand. Damola Idowu: But it seems like the front end, especially, is translated across a lot of the product lines. Moray Callum: Yeah the front end. There are slight similarities with the front end and the grill graphic, but there’s also a lot of traditional Mustang in the front end as well. That was really what we were trying to capture. It was really important for people to recognize it instantly as a Mustang, but what we did do is we changed the aspect ratio of the head lamps and the grill to make it look wider as well as we wanted to sort of communicate this improved stance of the vehicle, so the vehicle is lower; the vehicle is wider; and that’s really what the design is communicating in terms of the overall aspect ratio of the front.

Damola Idowu: Evos, that’s what I mean. The Evos came out a few years ago, so talk about how did that translate to this actual 2015 Mustang?

Damola Idowu: So talk about the process, too, because we’re also seeing more flowing lines. It seems like you’ve curved a lot of the language in a lot of the Ford portfolio. You know I used to own Expeditions and Tauruses and they used to be boxier and now it seems like the lines are dancing a little bit. Moray Callum: Well, I think you’re right. I think we’ve tried to put a little bit more, I would say, emotion into our surface language and I think people respond to that emotion as well. I think, you know, we’ve gone through periods where the cars have been a little bit too static and we want to advertise this movement because I think it does give the impression of a little bit more muscularity of the car and a little bit more emotion to the car. Damola Idowu: And when you say that, looking at the sales of the Escape, looking at the sales of the Explorer, looking at the sales of the Fusion, you know, you could see that language. Moray Callum: And we’re very happy with those and I think I’m especially happy because people are actually highlighting the design as one of the reasons to buy the core/car products, so that’s a double bonus for me. Damola Idowu: …And that’s even translating into your compact offerings like the Fiesta. So talk about that, like how do you interpret that design in a smaller [vehicle]? Moray Callum: Well I think the Fiesta - the Fiesta was designed in our European studio and I think really, that was the studio that really initiated what we call connecting design and they really wanted to give even a small car a lot of emotional appeal and a lot of sculpture to the body style, as well…again, so people would realize this passion and the design of the car, too. So it’s very important to get that emotional response from people even on a smaller car. Damola Idowu: …Talk about…coming soon, you’ll be debuting the Fusion in Europe so talk about how that process would go, and what would be the evolution for what’s here? Moray Callum: The Fusion will be the Mondeo in Europe so we’re keeping the Mondeo name, but it will be the same Fusion as is currently sold in the US. So the actual difference will be, there will be no difference at all so that’s part of our strategy, to have more global products that are recognized around the world. Damola Idowu: …Would the fit and finish or interior materials be much different? Moray Callum: …The finish should be exactly the same although they are built in different plants but a slight difference in paint colors and materials…really just to suit the local market. But we did set out to do a global car and we tried to keep the commonality very strong. Damola Idowu: …Now you guys acquired Livio and that’s going to be interpreted in your infotainment and in the interiors as far as the communication. So talk about that, because last generation Mustang was one of the first where you started integrating more of the touchscreen and navigation. Moray Callum: As you can see we’ve done that again... Damola Idowu: Exactly. so talk about how does that affect the process in your design? ownersillustrated.com• 55

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola Idowu

Moray Callum: I mean there’s a lot of technology being delivered in all cars these days and I think it’s our job to make that technology user-friendly and make it available for the customer to understand and make it much more intuitive and I think that’s one of the issues…one of the things that customers have asked for is they want technology, but they don’t want to be bombarded by it. So it’s our job to really make it user-friendly and make it intuitive and at the same time not go overkill as well. So getting that balance right is very important. Also the fact, you know, we want people to concentrate with their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, so that’s one of the aspects we look at in terms of how you integrate the technology and how you do it the right way - in the way the customer wants to use it.

Damola Idowu: Now just two more - two final questions. One question I had is, the F-150 using mostly aluminum. How did that change in how you’re able to bend it and how you’re able to design it because that’s a very temperamental metal to design with?

Moray Callum: Well, we’ve actually had some experience with aluminum before and there are some, I think, maybe 10 - 15 years ago if we used it there were more differences between aluminum and steel, but now we managed to get them much closer together in terms of how tight ??? we can get and then and how we can adjust margins. When we were involved with Jaguar, for example, we learned a lot with the aluminum bodies there, so there was a lot of learning from that, that we used to develop and perfect it. So from a design perspective, it’s actually - there’s not been that many limitations because of aluminum.

Damola Idowu: And going forward in the future what could we anticipate in how you’re leading Ford?

Moray Callum: I think…going forward hopefully, you’ll just keep seeing more and better cars for less and then the challenge is really…I think we’ve got a very good impetus going in the moment. I think we’ve got a great lineup of cars…but the competition’s not standing still either…We need to compete and really look at the design language and use that has a communication tool and a reason to buy the car. So we’re working hard to evolve our design language for the future.

Damola Idowu: Thank you so very much.

Vehicle Line Manager for Mazda MX-5 and M2

58• ownersillustrated.com

Mazda, since its departure from the Ford umbrella, has forged a new direction based on a core fundamental driving experience, SKYACTIV, and new design language, KODO, and an ability to create vehicles that are distinct in their segments. To stand out, Mazda has used premium materials and technology while making affordable products. Mazda is not opposed to future alliances, as is evident in their partnership with FCA to produce the new MX-5 and the Fiat 124 Spider. The partnership, however, is more for Mazda to supply manufacturing for the Fiat 124 Spider while the MX-5 is entirely engineered and manufactured by Mazda. I had a chance to speak to the vehicle line manager, Rod McLaughlin, at a drive event for the MX-5 which I wrote about in this issue. Our fascinating dialogue on Mazda and his career is below. Damola Idowu: So actually introduce yourself and what do you do at Mazda? Rod McLaughlin: My name is Rod McLaughlin and I’m the vehicle line manager for the Mazda MX-5 Miata and the Mazda 2. Damola Idowu: So kind of give us background on what that entails when you say you are the vehicle line manager. Rod McLaughlin: The role of the vehicle line manager from a product planning standpoint, the main goal is to - from the US market standpoint, incorporate what the US consumers or our interpretation of what the US consumers want in a product. So because a car like the MX-5 is a global vehicle - so it’s sold in Europe; it’s sold in Asia; it’s sold all over the world, each market’s gonna have different demands and different desires. So we all are kind of pushing and pulling to have the vehicle made to our preferences, but it has to obviously be global. But we still take into account what American consumers want, to make sure that the vehicle is viable from an American market standpoint. So for example, like in the presentation, I said that in Japan the desired engine is the 1.5-liter engine for the MX-5. We know that that wouldn’t work necessarily for the American consumer, so we were opting for more power. That’s why the vehicle we have in this market is the 2-liter engine. Damola Idowu: Now, you’re talking about that 1.5. Does that 1.5 appear in the Mazda2? Rod McLaughlin: Well the Mazda 2 is not being sold in the United States right now. Damola Idowu: But it was a couple of years ago? Rod McLaughlin: Yeah, it was up until last model year. The 1.5-liter engine that would be in the MX-5 has some shared components, but it went through a whole lot of additional development to be the engine in the MX-5 around the world. So, it’s not the exact engine from any other car. It’s been modified and tweaked for a sports car. Damola Idowu: Okay, so kind of talk about your roles then, because when you’re talking about Mazda2 and then Mazda2 not being [for the] America or US market - are you selling it in Mexico? Are you selling [in] Brazil? Canada? Rod McLaughlin: It’s selling all over the world, but in terms of from my responsibility, my responsibility is only in terms of managing over the United States and Puerto Rico. So the only reason that I am still managing the Mazda2 is because we’re still selling it in Puerto Rico for this year. Now that can change at any time in terms of what we sell in the United States, but right now, there’s a separate team in Canada that manages those sales, a separate team in Mexico that manages that, but we do the United States and Puerto Rico. Damola Idowu: Now the MX-5 is really like a niche market, the sports car tailored to a very specific set. You were talking about rear drive and the fun to drive and really, emphasis on being fun. Also, some of the development was done with Fiat Cars - FCA. So how did that process go and how did that affect your role? Rod McLaughlin: Well to be honest with you, I mean, the MX-5 is a Mazda-built product with the understanding that there would be, at the time, some Alfa participation for a version of that car for them. That ended up being a Fiat brand because the head of Alfa made a brand decision regarding Alfa and Fiat. In terms of what that car actually has, believe it or not, I am contractually limited to not know any of that. I’m in the US market so part of our contract with Fiat is that the people

in the various markets don’t know anything, because there’s really no reason for me to know what Fiat is going to do. So that is all housed in the people in the corporate office in Japan... Damola Idowu: I guess the reason I’m asking that question is that when you were making the distinction of the 1.5 is what Japan wanted, and in America [it] is 2.0. So how does what another manufacturer, which is out of your own corporate structure, affect how you are planning on what components or how you’re designing or how they might be able to modify it to suit their own needs? How does that affect the overall structure and infrastructure on the car? Rod McLaughlin: Well from our standpoint, we don’t take that into account, because again, we don’t know. So we can’t really move forward with any of that as something that we’re thinking about. We just move forward saying this is what we need for our consumers. We’re not sitting there in the back of the head, saying well is that what Fiat wants for their [consumers] because that’s just not part of our equation. Our equation is purely to submit what we feel is best for the American consumer to sell this car. We’re kind of lucky because we are one of the largest markets on the globe so we tend to get listened to, and not always, but I mean we’re always at the table. So when we’re looking at making suggestions on the product, it’s purely with the US consumer in mind. It’s not trying to second guess where the partnership agreement that we know nothing about entails. We just can’t do that. Damola Idowu: Now, you kind of were mentioning the SKYACTIV, which really is sort of like putting the soul of what people have known, the fun to drive, lightweight things that you would normally have gotten with a Miata into other products within the Mazda brand line. So how does the SKYACTIV…talk about SKYACTIV on this MX-5…how you’ve updated it. Rod McLaughlin: I mean the reality is - so SKYACTIV is that approach like you are suggesting. It makes the car lighter. It makes it stronger. It makes it more efficient. It basically allows us to reassess how we do everything. So instead of saying, okay, we want to make the car more efficient so we’ll just throw a hybrid in there, we’ll say well, no, let’s look at the combustion engine and how we do this and how can we make that better? How can we make the transition better? How can we do the gearing better? How can we make the car lighter? How can we make the weld points more strategically placed so the car is stronger even though the car is lighter? So, basically, these are all things that we now label as SKYACTIV technology, but as far as the MX-5 is concerned, these are things we’ve been doing from day one on the MX-5, and now they are just things that we’re doing on all of the products. Damola Idowu: Exactly. Rod McLaughlin: So that approach of lightweight, strong, efficient, safe, all that’s just been always part of the MX-5 DNA and now we’ve spread it basically across all the products. And then it comes full circle that this is the first SKYACTIV MX-5, but those are really parallel philosophies to a certain extent, the way the MX-5 has always been built and SKYACTIV technology. It’s just that now that the engine and the transmission - that all those things are now considered SKYACTIV because it’s following that kind of umbrella philosophy of the company. Damola Idowu: Now, and talking about the SKYACTIV, like with the CX-5, you actually have [a] 185, 184 - 185 pound-feet of torque engine - similar displacement as what you have in that MX-5. Would that be something that might be difficult to, in the future, put in? Because when I’m looking at the Club, I’m like wow, what if this had actually had the same engine as in the CX-5 as a performance [vehicle with the] same displacement? Rod McLaughlin: Well, actually I think the engine you’re talking about [is] in the CX-5-- because the CX-5 has two engines... Damola Idowu: Oh that’s right Rod McLaughlin: …the 2-liter and it’s got the 2.5-liter. Damola Idowu: Exactly. Actually not the same displacement, so that would be the 2.5. Rod McLaughlin: And each engine, you have to understand, is tuned for the purposes of that car. So a truck engine or SUV engine may have more torque and it’s designed to perform at a different range versus a sports car engine. So even if you take kind of the same block, you’re going to modify it so it performs a little bit differently. The engines in the MX-5 and what they need and how you want that engine to perform is going to be a little bit different. But in terms of the 2-liter in the MX-5 versus the 2-liter in the CX-5, and then how they perform and everything else, there’s nothing lacking in the MX-5. And again, it’s not just the displacement, and as I pointed out during the presentation, it’s not just the horsepower because even though this car has slightly less horsepower than the previous generation MX-5, it’s nearly a second faster at 0 to 60 so it’s the light weight; it’s the transmission; it’s the gearing... Damola Idowu: Of course. Rod McLaughlin: …It’s everything that goes into it that makes the car perform the way it does today. Damola Idowu: But…in the product planning phase, was that something considered or looked into as saying okay well here is a... Rod McLaughlin: The 2.5 liter? Damola Idowu: Yeah. Rod McLaughlin: I mean, well there’s a lot of considerations for different things…first of all, the size of - if you have a 2-liter, you have a 2.5... Damola Idowu: Obviously it would add some amount of weight, the displacement... Rod McLaughlin: Yeah, there’s weight consideration. How does it fit, because you’ve got a very compact car. You’ve got engine placement very low. Also, the engine has been pushed back to move weight back towards the center, so if you add a bigger engine, how much of that moves back over towards the front wheels, versus…behind the front wheels. So all those things is not just power, it’s balance, it’s just where that weight is on the car. So there’s multiple considerations for something like that. At this point, I don’t know if there was really from our standpoint, in our market, not really a thought of do we just take this engine and maybe put it into this other car. It’s just kind of, okay they want 1.5. We thought something bigger with more power would be better, but pulling it straight out the SUV without a lot of additional development, which could run a lot of money just to develop it and get that ready for a sports car, maybe not have been the primary consideration. Damola Idowu: …In conclusion, if you could kind of give like - because you said you’ve been at Mazda like a year and a half? Rod McLaughlin: I’ve been at Mazda 4 years. Damola Idowu: 4 years, so kind of like... Rod McLaughlin: I’ve been on the MX-5 for a year and a half. Damola Idowu: A year and a half. So kind of just talk a little bit about your journey…for people who just want to know…how did you get to being in charge of the MX-5? What was that pathway? Rod McLaughlin: Well, I’ve been in the industry for over 20 years, so I’ve been doing a lot of different positions. At Mazda, I started in marketing [and] planning where I was basically responsible for the plan to have the various marketing departments kind of conform to one strategy moving forward from a communications standpoint. And then one day product planning came by and asked me if I was interested in applying for an open position, and that was on the Mazda6. So I worked on the Mazda6 for a while. And then after that, the launch of the MX-5 was approaching and they needed someone to work on that so they approached me about that [and] said, ʻwould you like to work on the MX-5’? I said, ʻI would love to; that’d be a dream’. So it’s pretty much as simple as that, just being at the right place at the right time. Damola Idowu: And putting in about 20 years of work to build your reputation. Rod McLaughlin: …A 20-year overnight thing… Damola Idowu: Yeah, appreciate your time. Rod McLaughlin: No problem.

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola Idowu

BRANDEN COTE

THE WORLD OF AMG

Exclusive interview with Exclusive Vehicles Manager - AMG & designo for Mercedes-Benz USA

AMG has grown from performance and cosmetic upgrades to existing Mercedes-Benz models to an actual division with its own unique product portfolio and as usual, performance models of existing Mercedes-Benz vehicles. With AMG you get handcrafted engines and different body panels and interior materials and the results of recent have been nothing short of remarkable. With a wide range of engines with 2.0L turbos on 4 cylinders to 4.0L V-8’s along with the V-12, one can now get the pure AMG experience in the widest range of Mercedes-Benz vehicles. I have driven the GLA45 and GTS and in this issue, I have written about them, but I thought it valuable to speak with someone at AMG about the variety and the vision. Brandon T. Coté, Manager, Exclusive Vehicles, AMG, Designo for MBUSA was kind enough to give us his time. Our dialogue follows.

Damola: …Introduce yourself - what you do with AMG and then we could talk about the one man, one engine... Coté: So I’m Branden Coté, head of AMG product management for MBUSA. Damola: So talk about this new GLE AMG and is this the S or just the regular 63? Coté: So this is the all-new GLE63 S model. So historically, this vehicle was called the ML. In the USA there was only the 63. We now have an S model variant. So now with the facelift we changed the nomenclature from ML to GLE and now this is also the S model…this has 577 horsepower in it…0 to 60 in about 4.2 seconds. Damola: So talk about what you guys added. Obviously, adding that amount of power, how did you change the rigidity, the engineering, architecture, frames? Coté: So what’s really, really unique about AMG is that, you know, we don’t just go in and put a new engine in the vehicle, we actually completely re-design the vehicle. So the engine, the suspension, the transmission, the brakes, the wheels, we go in and re-engineer the vehicle so that it can be capable to handle this amount of power and be able to perform the way you expect an AMG to as well. This also has active sway bars in it, for instance, with our active curve system. So as you go around a corner, the natural incline of the vehicle is to kind of sway out or have a little bit of body roll. Well, this actually has motors on our sway bars which twist the vehicle back upright...the vehicle stays completely flat… Damola: So speak about the one man, one engine…

Coté: This is really, really one of the biggest claims here. So AMG is a design engineering firm and we build our engines by the philosophy of one man, one engine. None of our competitors can claim this. So what’s really unique about that is our engine builders take an engine block and put every wiring harness on it, all the cylinders, the cam, chassis, build the entire engine to a test running motor and then they put their signature nameplate on the top, attesting to the quality and craftsmanship that go into that motor. Damola: So with this 577, wheel size. Coté: So we have a couple different wheel sizes on this vehicle. This here is the S model which offers a 21-inch wheel and 60• ownersillustrated.com

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola we also have our coupe variant of this model, which has a 22-inch wheel as well. Damola: And we’ll see that too. So what are some of the other things… Coté: …AMG C63 - this vehicle features an all-new motor for us that we just designed, the 4-liter biturbo V-8 motor. It features hot inside V, so you put the turbos inside the V of the engine, which allows us to have the exhaust portion of the cylinders go directly into the turbine so you have zero turbo lag in the vehicle. It also allows us to situate the engine a little lower and further back in the chassis both to give better handling and performance. [The] vehicle goes on sale actually in about 2 weeks. So by the time the auto show is over you can go into the dealerships and purchase one. Damola: So tell us about the performance on this model. Coté: So we offer two variants of this, we have the C63 and then we also have the C63 S model. So the differences are 462 horsepower versus 503 horsepower on the two vehicles and 0 to 60 time for the S model is about 3.8 seconds with about a .15 second in 0 to 60 differences between the two vehicles Damola: So how much of a premium…is the pricing between the S and the regular C63? Coté: Base price of the C63 is [$63,900], S model is [$8000] more at [$71,900].

Damola: So [$71,900], 503 horsepower. Coté: Can’t beat it. Damola: …And then let’s go to see the GT S…So tell us about the GLE AMG coupe.

Coté: So this is GLE63 S coupe, we debuted this vehicle a couple of months ago in the Detroit auto show and now we bring it here to the New York auto show. The vehicle will go on sale, end of summer, early Fall, but really this is the coupe variant of the GLE SUV which we just took a look at and as you can see from the lines it’s a very, very sexy vehicle, very sporty, extremely nimble and really is for that person that wants an SUV, wants to be a little bit higher off the ground but doesn’t want to sacrifice the attractiveness of what a beautiful coupe line gives you as well. Damola: So show us what’s inside, though, because the interior package looks markedly different from what we just saw. Coté: Yes. So we offer a variety of interiors on all of our vehicles. This particular one has [a] beautiful Nappa interior with the brown leather, with the black upper dash, the brown seats and inserts. We have a natural finish wood so you don’t have that high-gloss coating. So you have a nice natural finish there. All-new interior, completely redesigned for this year and of course running boards on the vehicle, AMG, door seals, 22-inch wheels. This vehicle is just an absolute monster not only from a performance standpoint but from a statement standpoint in design. There is not a better-looking SUV in the market right now. Damola: So this actually has a bigger wheel package. Coté: Than those on the regular SUV...This vehicle has the largest wheels in the entire Mercedes fleet with 22-inch wheel options. Damola: And it looks like it even has a bigger panoramic roof set.

Coté: It does. It also features the panoramic roof on it and the storage space back here is actually quite large as well. It’s very deep, very wide, so you don’t really sacrifice a lot of storage with that sloped roof on. Damola: So [are] the performance figures the same as what’s on the other SUV? Coté: It is. Yes, the same 577 horsepower, 0 to 60 in 4.2 seconds, features AMG performance 4MATIC in the vehicle so it propels the same active curve system that we discussed on the other vehicle, very, very [impressive]. Damola: So let’s go to see the C-Class AMG Coté: Yeah, let’s go check it out. Damola: So now this is the crown jewel of them all, the AMG GT, so tell us about this because there was obviously a whole new direction from the SLS, no gullwings, different powertrains, different engines. Kind of give us an overview.

Coté: Yeah, this is the all-new AMG GT S and it really allows us to enter a segment of the market we’ve never competed in before. So the SLS which was the previous two-door supercar from AMG really competed at a different level than what this vehicle does. This vehicle is coming in at a price point of almost 50% of what the SLS was, completely different vehicle. 503 horsepower here. It features the 4-liter biturbo V-8, which combines both the hot inside V and dry-sump lubrication. So, it’s really allowed us to enter the segment of the sports car that we have never competed in before and we really think it’s a winner.

Damola: So would the 577-horsepower engine make its way here? ownersillustrated.com• 61

TOYZ MAKERS EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW by Damola Idowu

Coté: No, definitely not, so the engine that you have in the GLE is [an] older engine that we have that we’ve been using for a very long time, the tried and true and tested engine - the 5.5-liter. This is the new engine for AMG - the 4-liter and this is really what you’re going to get to see across many other vehicles. So this is the engine you’ll start to see that gets perpetuated in the other models, not the other way around. Damola: So this engine is also in the C-Class AMG? Coté: It’s very similar, not the exact same so this engine features the dry-sump lubrication. C63 does not have dry-sump lubrication so what that allows us to do is situate the motor much lower in the vehicle. It’s also a front mid-engine design so the engine sits behind the front axle but in front of the cabin of the vehicle. So, while both engines are based off the same block, both the 4-liter V-8, the hot inside V, slightly different in the way they work…so we have the dry-sump lubrication also to get better performance and it’s situated lower in the chassis. Damola: So how about the weight to horsepower ratio for this versus the SLS? Coté: Great question. So the SLS has a greater horsepower to weight ratio, but this vehicle actually weighs about 200 pounds less than the SLS did. So in many ways this is a very nimble vehicle. The SLS is a phenomenal vehicle, obviously the gullwings – it’s iconic. It’s done very, very well in motorsports, but we really see this as the next phase and evolution of the brand. Damola: So would this also have the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system? Coté: Now you get it, my friend, so this is rearwheel drive as a true sports car should. Damola: So no all-wheel drive here? Coté: Negative. No. Damola: So this has the 4…

Coté: The 4-liter and 0 to 60 in 3.7 seconds. Damola: …[the] 4-liter turbo that would be carried over. So would that now be the base 4-liter in all the 63ʼs? Coté: So over time you will see that this engine gets utilized in many of our other variants, but weʼre always looking at how do we improve our engine efficiency? How do we get more power out of the engine? How do we get less emissions out of the motor, make it more efficient? So you will see this get used in other models as well. Which models this engine will come to next? Stay tuned. Damola: I guess another question one would have is that at the top of the engine, AMG engine strata, is the S65. Is that something that possibly could be a version, a black series, for example, that would have that S65 that is in the S-Class or even the SL AMG S? Coté: So the S65, all of our 65ʼs are our V-12 motor and itʼs a very, very exclusive engine and line-up for us. We will not be putting a V-12 into this vehicle for a couple of reasons. One, is space constraints. We donʼt space for a V-12. The other thing is the V-12 has a lot of weight to the vehicle…When you want a very nimble and agile sports car, weight is your enemy. So we can actually get so much more horsepower out of the V-8 motor that we really donʼt need to go to the V-12, given the added weight that it gives you. We get better performance out of the V-8 motor so do not expect a 12-cylinder in this vehicle. Damola: So the SL, though, has the 12-cylinder? Coté: Correct. The SL is much more of a grand tourer, though, where this is a purebred sports car. Damola: And thatʼs really what I was getting at. So for the SL moving forward - that would kind of be the differentiation. The SL would be the grand tourer. This would be more of the performance sports car in the line-up. Coté: The other thing too is this is a coupe where the SL is a roadster, so if somebody wants to be able to put the top down on the vehicle, have the great performance, we have the SL63 right and we also have the SL65. This is the 100% sports car, though, coupe only. Damola: So…could it still serve as a daily driver? Coté: Absolutely. Absolutely. So Iʼve had the fortunate opportunity to be able to drive this vehicle on a regular basis and this is a fantastic vehicle. We have something called…DYNAMIC SELECT, where we have five different drive modes in the vehicle which allow us to completely change the dynamics of the vehicle from the chassis set-up, the suspension, the transmission settings, the throttle input and response, the intake and exhaust of the engine and it really allows you to have a very comfortable ride when you just want to go around town. But when you want to take the car to the track, you throw it into race mode and you rock and roll. Damola: So can you re-introduce yourself again for the record. Coté: My name is Branden Coté, head of AMG product management for MBUSA. Damola: Thank you very much.
