Hey, it’s still the Egg Bowl O le Miss can become bowl eligible. Mississippi State can’t. That’s where we are heading into this year’s Egg Bowl. This wasn’t completely unexpected. Most figured it would be tough sledding for the Bulldogs after losing a player the caliber of Dak Prescott, and the last-place SEC Western Division finish the media predicted for Mississippi State back in July could soon be official. The surprise is that Ole Miss, the same team that was picked by those same media members to finish third in the West, hasn’t been much better. The running game has been its usually sporadic self under Hugh Freeze

while the defense has been no help as the Rebels are constantly forced to try to keep up in games with their normally explosive DAVIS POTTER passing attack. Egg Bowl Saturday arrived last year with Ole Miss still in contention for the SEC West title. Mississippi State was No. 4 in the playoff rankings two years ago before Ole Miss crushed those dreams with a two-touchdown win. Ole Miss enters this year’s game at 5-6 while Mississippi State is 4-7, meaning the stakes have been reduced to a fight for one team to play one more game

in Memphis, Birmingham or Shreveport. But it’s Ole Miss and Mississippi State. If these teams’ recent successes and the NCAA’s investigation into Ole Miss’ program have taught us anything, it’s that the passion and vitriol among players, coaches and fans have only intensified in the state’s most heated rivalry. The records show both teams have a bunch of flaws, and that’s why you can make the case for either team winning this one Saturday. Ole Miss’ passing game hasn’t missed much of a beat with Shea Patterson now calling the shots, SEE POTTER, 14

Senior linebacker Richie Brown (39) leads Mississippi State with 89 tackles.

Ole Miss goes for bowl berth against rival Bulldogs BY DAVIS POTTER davis.potter@oxfordeagle.com

Ole Miss’ players are beside themselves that it’s come to this. “Very disappointing,” senior running back Akeem Judd said. Said cornerback Carlos Davis, “It’s very shocking.” A team that began the season ranked in the top 15 in the major polls, Ole Miss (5-6, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) finds itself needing a win over rival Mississippi State on Saturday just to get to a bowl game. Things went from bad to worse last week at Vanderbilt, which held the Rebels to a season-low 17 points while nearly doubling its scoring average for the season in a three-touchdown win to crawl out of the cellar of the SEC Eastern Division standings. Ole Miss has gone bowling each of the first four seasons of Hugh Freeze’s tenure, a streak the Rebels hope to keep alive despite

the disappointment of a season gone wrong. This week’s opponent, Freeze said, should be enough motivation. “It’s a game that means an extraordinary amount to this university, to our fan base and to theirs,” Freeze said. “It’s going to be a great challenge. We’ve had obviously a lot of adversity throughout the course of this year. To prepare to try to get a sixth win and gain bowl eligibility against your in-state rival, these games are always quite interesting regardless of records.” Ole Miss’ offense wasn’t good against Vanderbilt, but Mississippi State’s defense isn’t Vanderbilt’s. The Bulldogs are the worst in the SEC in scoring defense and passing defense — an advantage for the Rebels’ topranked passing offense — and gave up 38 of Arkansas’ 58 points last week in the first half. But can the Rebels stop Mississippi State’s offense? SEE BERTH, 15

MISSISSIPPI STATE

WALTER FRAZIER

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen has a 4-3 record in the Egg Bowl.

Head coach: Dan Mullen (eighth season at Mississippi State, 59-42; 59-42 overall) Results: lost to South Alabama 21-20, beat South Carolina 27-14, lost to LSU 23-20, beat Massachusetts 47-35, lost to Auburn 38-14, lost to BYU 28-21 (two OT), lost to Kentucky 40-38, beat Samford 56-41, beat Texas A&M 35-28, lost to Alabama 51-3, lost to Arkansas 58-42 Last meeting: It was Dak Prescott’s senior night on Nov. 29, 2015, but it was Chad Kelly and the rest of the Rebels who did all the celebrating. Kelly threw for 236 yards and accounted for three touchdowns as Ole Miss turned the state’s annual rivalry game into a rout, leading 28-3 at one point. Jordan Wilkins added a 38-yard touchdown run while the Rebels’ defense also scored points on Tony Bridges’ first-quarter interception return as Ole Miss got its first road victory in the series since 2003. More running: Ole Miss’ run defense will get yet another test from a team that likes to run the ball a lot. Mississippi State’s offense isn’t great, but the Bulldogs’ best chance to move the ball and score points is when they can stay ahead of the chains using their bread and butter. Mississippi State has rushed for the fifth-most yards in the SEC this season and is running for 212.8 yards per game using a

number of different options. But none is used more than quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, who’s continuing Dan Mullen’s lineage of dual-threat signal callers. Fitzgerald leads the Bulldogs with 985 rushing yards and 12 scores on the ground, something to watch with Ole Miss’ struggles against dual-threat quarterbacks this season. Thin air: The Bulldogs have needed every bit of the contributions they’ve gotten from Fitzgerald and the rest of the offense with the way the defense has been shredded through the air. The Bulldogs have given up an SECworst 3,077 passing yards and 29 passing touchdowns, 11 more than anyone else in the league. Expect the Bulldogs to dial up a bunch of blitzes against Ole Miss’ bangedup offensive line to try to quickly get to Shea Patterson. If the Bulldogs can’t, there will be plenty of chances for big plays for the SEC’s top passing offense. Worth noting: Ole Miss broke its road curse in the rivalry a year ago. Now Mississippi State takes its turn. The Bulldogs have won just once in eight trips to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium since the turn of the century. Ole Miss has won three of its last four home games in the series by a combined score of 117-41,

including a 31-17 victory in 2014. Playing at home seems to be yet another advantage for Ole Miss in this one. The Rebels have lost just once at home this sea-

son, a four-point setback to No. 1 Alabama. Mississippi State’s win at UMass back in September is the Bulldogs’ only win on the road.

Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson (20) has shown flashes of pure talent along with growing pains two starts into his collegiate career.

Patterson learning on fly with unexpected opportunity BY DAVIS POTTER davis.potter@oxfordeagle.com

There’s been some good and some bad for Shea Patterson. In others words… “He’s probably about where you would expect any freshman who came out this early in the season to be,” Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said. The Rebels’ prized quarterback is two games into a career that started a year earlier than expected when Chad Kelly was lost for the season with a knee injury earlier this month. Freeze decided to pull the redshirt off the five-star signee and start him against Texas A&M. His debut was sparkling, throwing for 338 yards and leading four second-half scoring drives that rallied Ole Miss to a

29-28 road win over the Aggies. Last week against Vanderbilt, Patterson experienced the other end of the spectrum. Patterson completed less than 50 percent of his passes and was sacked three times with Ole Miss not finding the end zone in the second or third quarters of a sobering 38-17 loss. The Commodores’ defense gave Patterson a bunch of different looks, though the youngster said it wasn’t confusion so much as effective simplicity that bogged the offense down. “I just think they were so fundamentally sound on defense,” Patterson said. “They played a lot of true cover-2 looks and sat under a lot of stuff. They’re just very wellcoached. I just felt like they played a lot harder than we did.” SEE PATTERSON, 15

Givens constantly working to improve BY JAKE THOMPSON jake.thompson@oxfordeagle.com

Alex Givens was expected to see some playing time this season. He was not expected to become a regular starter and an experienced player by the end of this season. The Nashville native was a highly touted four-star prospect and was a part of Ole Miss’ 2015 signing class. The Rebels redshirted him last season, knowing they will need Givens for as long as possible given the depth and injury issues that group has faced in recent years. It turned out those issues would make Givens hear his named called sooner rather than later. Entering fall camp, Givens was listed as the No. 2 left tackle on the depth chart. In the final week of the regular season, Givens is now the starting right tackle, rotating with Sean Rawlings

heading into the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State. “I think I’ve done pretty good so far,” Givens said of his progression through the first 11 games. “There’s always room for improvement and every day I’ve been working at it, trying to get my craft right.” It has been a trial by fire for Givens as he has had to get thrust into the offensive line rotation against some of the top defenses in the country, including LSU, Auburn, Texas A&M and Arkansas. He has seen action all season long, including making his Ole Miss debut against Florida State in the season opener in Orlando, Florida. “It’s been a really good learning experience,” Givens said. “Going against people that good, in the future, that will really benefit me I feel.”

The offensive line has been a walking wounded for most of the season. With center Robert Conyers, guard Jordan Sims and left tackle Rod Taylor constantly battling nagging injures, it has caused offensive line coach Matt Luke to shuffle players around. The shuffling eventually saw Givens find his way with a starting role and providing key snaps to help others stay off the field and heal if possible. “He’s doing good,” Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze said of Givens. “Alex has a lot of fight in him. Those o-line guys, man, we’ve got a bunch of warriors there. They’re just hardnosed, tough kids. All of them are hurting a little bit. They’re playing more snaps than they need to, but Alex has done really well.” SEE GIVENS, 14

It was not the plan, but now what remains of the coveted 2013 signing class at Ole Miss is playing to keep their Rebel careers alive for one more game. The Rebels are sitting at 5-6 and need a victory against bitter rival Mississippi State to earn the all-important sixth win and a berth into a bowl game. It was the best signing class in program history at the time, finishing inside the top 5 nationally in multiple publications and rankings. Gone are crown jewels Robert Nkemdiche, Laquon Treadwell and Laremy Tunsil, who bolted for the NFL a year ago, but some of the biggest pieces still remain

in tight end Evan Engram and defensive back Tony Conner. Other seniors include transfer defensive end Fadol Brown, punter and Australian native Will Gleeson and wide receiver turned defensive back turned wide receiver and once again defensive back Derrick Jones. On Saturday, Ole Miss is looking for their third straight win against Mississippi State and a shot at keeping “the Egg,” as the players call the trophy, in Oxford for another 365 days. For most of the seniors still around, they have never tasted defeat at the hands of the Bulldogs. With all that is riding on it now, keeping it that way is a must. “I can’t imagine leaving the program behind and leaving the Egg on (Mississippi

State’s) sideline,” Brown said. “It’s just crazy. It means the world to this coaching staff, to Rebel Nation. … I was just laying around the house the other day and it hit me that this is going to be my last game inside the Vaught. I’ve never lost the Egg since I’ve been here, and I don’t want to start now.” This class has seen lows and experienced highs throughout their careers at Ole Miss. Hugh Freeze arrived in 2012 and began what he called the journey. The 2013 class was a huge step forward and jumpstarted what has become a resurrection of sorts for the program. Since 2012, the Rebels have gone to four straight bowls games, from the Birmingham Bowl in Freeze’s first year all the way to the Sugar Bowl championship a year ago. In between saw trips to the Music City Bowl and a stunning loss to TCU in the Peach Bowl two seasons ago. Two New Years Six bowls, in the two years of their creation, helped Ole Miss be ranked in the inaugural College Football Playoff rankings. “By the people who are very close to the program and those of us who have worked with them, there’s no doubt in our mind that they have rejuvenated and made Ole Miss football relevant again,” Freeze said of the senior class.

“That will be the memory, Unfortunately, it’s a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately society, so some will choose to put emphasis on the disappointing season that many us are having, including myself. But the totality of what they have done here, you can’t argue.” For some, this season was one that was never planned to happen for them. Conner was expecting to be playing on Sundays, but a knee injury against Alabama last season derailed that dream for the time being and allowed him to return to Ole Miss. Conner’s final season has not gone how he would have liked, struggling to return to full strength after the injury and unable to help a defense that has struggled this year. A chance to defeat the Bulldogs one last time and give himself one more game to play in a Rebel uniform is enough motivation for Conner to not view the season as a total loss. “This game means a lot to everybody,” Conner said. “Our fans always tell us we can lose every game but we have to win the Egg Bowl. … As the season first started, I wasn’t as comfortable with the brace on and everything. I feel a whole lot comfortable right now. I’ve just been trying to get the guys fired up and BRUCE NEWMAN end the season on the right note.” Derrick Jones (19) has spent his career going between offense and defense.

Rebels feed Moncrief in Egg Bowl rout for bowl berth BY JAKE THOMPSON jake.thompson@oxfordeagle.com

BRUCE NEWMAN

Ole Miss’ Donte Moncrief (12) makes a touchdown catch behind Mississippi State defensive back Johnthan Banks (13) at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford on Nov. 24, 2012.

Four years ago, Ole Miss was on the cusp of reaching a bowl game for the first time since 2009. It was Hugh Freeze’s first season and his first taste of the Egg Bowl as a head coach. The Rebels were 5-6 heading into their final game of the season. Fast forward to 2016 and Ole Miss is sitting at 5-6 in Freeze’s fifth year at the helm and in need of another Egg Bowl victory over rival Mississippi State to earn a bowl berth and keep the season alive. If history is any indication, Freeze and Co. should be packing their bags for a trip somewhere as he was able to knock off the Bulldogs in 2012 with a dominant 41-24 victory inside Vaught-

LOOKBACK: MISSISSIPPI ST. 2012 Hemingway Stadium. It was a game that was dubbed the “Feed Moncreif” game as the sophomore wide receiver torched the Mississippi State defense for three touchdowns and 177 yards on seven catches. “I cannot be more proud of this group of young men and coaches,” Freeze said after the game. “I’m first and foremost happy and thrilled for them and then secondly for our fans, administration and the people of the Rebel Nation who had to go through losing the momentum in this series. I understand that was difficult.”

The win halted a three-game winning streak for Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl. Moncrief’s first touchdown catch of the game came in the second quarter when he hauled in his longest reception of the game (77 yards) and split two defenders for the score, putting Ole Miss out front 17-10. In the third quarter, Moncrief put the Rebels on his back as he caught touchdown passes of 21 and and 16 yards, respectively, on back-to-back drives, extending the Rebels’ lead to 34-17. “I just knew that if (Ole Miss quarterback) Bo (Wallace) put it there, I had to make a big play,” Moncrief said. “I told him, ‘Bo, if you give me a chance, I’ll make the play and make you look good. ‘Dores’ Turnage enjoys successful season, nets offer BY JAKE THOMPSON jake.thompson@oxfordeagle.com

BRUCE NEWMAN

Lafayette’s Brandon Turnage (7) picked up his first offer from Ole Miss and could garner more over the next two years.

Brandon Turnage had zero inclination that a school was already looking at him. He is a sophomore at Lafayette High School who plays both offense and defense for the Commodores. His is also currently holding an offer from Ole Miss with two more years of high school football left in his career. Ole Miss invited Turnage to come to the Georgia Southern game and afterwards they told him to keep in touch, which he has done and even attended nearly every Thursday practice since then. Former Lafayette and current Ole Miss offensive lineman Eli Johnson got back in touch with Turnage, who told him to give Ole Miss assistant coach Matt Luke a call and was informed of his offer. This year has been a productive one for Turnage, who is one of Lafayette head coach Michael Fair’s top defenders. Through their first 13 games, Turnage has six interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown against Ripley earlier this season. The interception total is a team-best, tied with senior

BRANDON TURNAGE School: Lafayette Position: DB/WR Height: 6-foot-2 Weight: 170 lbs The 411: A breakout season has put Turnage on the radar for Southeastern Conference schools as a sophomore. It’s easy to see why Ole Miss has already offered him a scholarship and many more could be coming over the next two years. A long, rangy athlete, Turnage has shown a knack for finding the ball, leading the Commodores with six picks and accounting for 529 all-purpose yards on offense.

Xavier Martin. Turnage also has five pass deflections and 46 total tackles. “You see (Turnage’s) athletic ability, but you didn’t know exactly if he was going to be able to mentally take on what he was going to need to this year as a sophomore,” Fair said. “We knew in the first game when those lights cut on and he started making some plays that this could be a pretty special year for him, and it has.” On both sides of the football, Turnage is a complement to senior standout Tyler Carmichael-Williams, a Mississippi State commit. Offensively, the two are the most productive receivers for senior quarterback Will Ard. Williams leads with 653 yards and eight touchdowns, but Turnage is right behind him with 313 yards and three touchdowns. The duo are right next to each other in all-purpose yards with Williams leading at 661 yards and Turnage sitting second with

529. “I saw how Tyler had been working and stuff, and I said, ‘In order to be like him, I have to work with him,’” Turnage said. “Over the summer, we came to the field after workouts to do footwork drills. He helped me practice my man coverage and everything.” With Williams leaving for the Southeastern Conference after this season, it will make a returning Turnage one of the most experienced defensive backs come next August. He has two more seasons to play and would like to follow in his friend and teammate’s footsteps and end up on a SEC squad himself, having an Ole Miss offer on the table already is helping with that. The 2019 prospect also has LSU and Auburn on his personal wishlist of schools he hopes pay attention in the coming years.

SEC NOTEBOOK

Auburn still unsettled at QB for Iron Bowl BY DAVIS POTTER davis.potter@oxfordeagle.com

Whether Auburn quarterback Sean White (13) plays is the biggest question ahead of Saturday’s Iron Bowl.

BRUCE NEWMAN

Like many teams at this point of the season, Auburn is dealing with a lengthy list of injuries. Sean White’s shoulder is at the top of it. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said he’s yet to determine whether White will start or even be able to play in Saturday’s Iron Bowl against top-ranked Alabama. White became the Tigers’ answer at the position after a carousel of signal callers early in the season but hurt his throwing shoulder against Ole Miss in late October.

“We’ve not made that call yet,” Malzahn said Wednesday. “I know Sean did practice (Tuesday). In fact, everybody practiced yesterday, but we’ve not made the call on our starting quarterback yet.” If the Tigers’ last Southeastern Conference game is any indication, the Tigers could be in for a long day against the Crimson Tide’s suffocating defense if White isn’t behind center. Malzahn elected to stay with a visibly injured White in Auburn’s 13-7 loss at Georgia two weeks ago, showing no confidence in backup John Franklin III or former starter Jeremy Johnson. But Johnson could get the nod if White can’t go after starting last week’s 55-0 win over Alabama A&M. “(White) has to be healthy enough to be able to run the whole offense, and he needs to be healthy enough to protect himself,” Malzahn said. “Those are the two questions that we’re going to answer this week in practice.” The SEC’s top-ranked rushing offense will have its top rusher back to help in Kamryn Pettway, the 240-pounder who’s missed Auburn’s last two games with a quad injury. “He’s got great vision and instincts as a runner,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said of Pettway. “He’s got great power because of his size. … We just think he’s a fantastic player.”

Beisel, who was also recruited by Arkansas, also purposefully mispronounced the state’s name four times, referring to it as “Ar-Kansas.” “Obviously Eric and I have had a few conversations on this,” Odom said. “It’s not something I’m really interested in, making bold statements, by anybody. He said it, can’t get it back, we apologized, and that doesn’t reflect our feelings making statements like that.” Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said he accepted the apology on one condition. “I told (Odom), ‘Hey, tell (Beisner) the Razorbacks accept the apology fully as long as he learns how to pronounce Arkansas,’” said Bielema, whose team plays Missouri annually with the SEC making the Tigers a permanent cross-division opponent for Arkansas. “That’s something that strikes a chord with everybody here in the state.”

“You’re hearing about it, and your heart goes out to all the victims and all the families but also to the employees, all the doctors and nurses that are working around the clock,” Jones said after the visit. “Thought it was the least that we could do. … We give constant prayers because it puts everything into perspective.”

‘Once-in-a-long-time type of player’

If Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech is the last one for running back Nick Chubb at Georgia, first-year coach Kirby Smart is glad he got a chance to coach him. Chubb has yet to decide whether he’ll skip his senior season and get an early start on his NFL career. That future appeared

to be in jeopardy last season when he suffered a gruesome knee injury against Tennessee, but Chubb, who was getting mentioned for the Heisman before the injury, returned to play in every game this season and recently surpassed 3,000 rushing yards for his career. “He’s a once-in-a-long-time type of player,” Smart said.

UT visits Chattanooga

Tennessee coach Butch Jones and some of his players didn’t feel like they could sit around and do nothing after Monday’s deadly bus crash in Chattanooga, Tennessee that reportedly killed six children and injured several others. So they took a break from their preparation for Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt, boarded a plane in Knoxville at 6:30 Wednesday morning and flew to visit with some of the victims and their families.

GIVENS: Starting role doesn’t alter mindset FEED: Rebels’ star wideout goes off in Egg Bowl win FROM PAGE 7 Moving from a backup who has the mentality that they will see a small amount of snaps in a game as he would rotate the starter out to give them a break to now becoming the starter himself has not been too much of an adjustment for Givens. He used his

redshirt season to prepare for this moment. “It really hasn’t changed at all,” Givens said of his mindset. “I’ve just been working hard every day even when I wasn’t a starter. I just want to improve on everything I do. (Improving) my pass rush would be good and just keep doing the little things right.”

FROM PAGE 10 He kept giving me chances, and I made the big plays for him.” Wallace finished his night completing 15 of 22 passes for 294 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for 52 yards on 13 carries. Vince Sanders and Jamal Mosley each had touchdown grabs to go along with Moncrief’s. Ole Miss’ defense held the Bulldog offense in

check as quarterback Tyler Russell threw for 268 yards and a touchdown. Future Mississippi State star Dak Prescott made his Egg Bowl debut, completing three passes for 35 yards and a touchdown. “At halftime, we just challenged the defense,” Freeze said. “Just do your job. We did nothing special. We didn’t blitz much. Line up and do your job, then line up and do it again. Don’t give them cheap plays. If you do those things, you will stop the run and win the game.”

POTTER: Game doesn’t have same implications as recent years, but pride always a motivating factor FROM PAGE 2 a clear advantage for the Rebels against this Mississippi State secondary if the wideouts can actually hold on to the ball. The Bulldogs have been among the nation’s worst pass defenses all season, giving up more passing yards and more touchdowns through the air than anybody

in the SEC. But Mississippi State runs the ball well, and if you can do that, you can gash this Ole Miss defense, which is among the nation’s worst against the run. The Rebels will have to deal with another dual-threat quarterback in Nick Fitzgerald, who’s run for nearly 1,000 yards and could pair with State’s backs to make things interesting if

they’re able to control the clock and limit Ole Miss’ possessions. So no, this year’s Egg Bowl won’t mean as much as it has the last couple of years, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t mean as much to everyone involved. This is the Egg Bowl, where pride is more than enough motivation. Ole Miss would love nothing more than to con-

tinue the Bulldogs’ demise in the series for a third straight season. State would love nothing more than to stick it to the Rebels heading into the offseason. Go ahead and chunk the records. PATTERSON: Talented quarterback shows flashes of ability but ‘still a ways to go’ to get comfortable FROM PAGE 6 It was the latest learning experience for Patterson in a season that’s unexpectedly providing him with plenty. “Just don’t take anybody lightly,” Patterson said. “Any SEC West game is going to be equally as tough as the last one, so you’ve just got to come out from the jump and give it all you’ve got.”

Happy feet WALTER FRAZIER

Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald leads the Bulldogs with 985 rushing yards.

BERTH: MSU another challenge for Rebels’ run defense FROM PAGE 3 The Bulldogs (4-7, 2-5) tried to keep up against Arkansas with 42 points of their own and are in the top half of the SEC in total offense and rushing offense with quarterback Nick Fitzgerald at the controls. Fitzgerald is just as much of a threat with his legs as he is his arm, leading Mississippi State with 985 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground and giving an Ole Miss defense allowing more than 227 rushing yards a game another run threat to worry about. Ole Miss will have to try to slow down Fitzgerald and the rest of Mississippi State’s offense for the first two quarters without leading tackler DeMarquis Gates, who is suspended for the first half after being ejected for targeting in the third quarter against Vanderbilt. Redshirt freshman Willie Hibbler finished the game at

outside linebacker, but Freeze said the Rebels will get multiple players prepared to play there come Saturday. “We have a great challenge in trying to stop their offense,” Freeze said. “It’s a good scheme, and their quarterback is playing at a really high level with skilled receivers.” Ole Miss has won two straight in the series and will look to keep the home-field advantage going this season. The Rebels have won seven of the eight Egg Bowls played at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium since the turn of the century. Freeze expects his team to have as much help as possible in trying to win another one as the Rebels look to salvage something this season. “It’s going to be a great atmosphere Saturday afternoon here,” Freeze said. “Our fans will show up and help us defend the Egg Bowl.”

Patterson has shown off his athleticism, often scrambling to buy time behind his patchwork offensive line and using his feet to pick up chunks of yardage when things break down. It’s an instinctual reaction, but Patterson admitted there have been times where he’s taken off too early. It’s a balance between a part of his game and staying within the offense that he’s

trying to figure out. “I’ve just got to stay in there and run the offense really,” Patterson said. “Just stay in the pocket as long as I can. When stuff breaks down, then be myself.” Patterson is getting more time this week to focus on football ahead of Saturday’s finale against Mississippi State with classes not part of his routine. Freeze is using the extra time to bring his young signal caller along as much as he can before then. “There would still be stuff on film that he’s got to get an understanding of,” Freeze said. “It’s great that we have some extra time this week with classes not in session that he can get some extra film. We can make sure he feels great about what we’re trying to do this Saturday. There were a lot of good things he did (against Vanderbilt) but still a ways to go.”
