HARD WORK AND DEVON DREAMS

If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough. ~Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, First Female African President~

The quote above really shows what I always think about because my dreams have always scared me, which pushed me to be committed to my sport.

With Devon only a month away, my dreams are filled with ponies, jumps, trips and ribbons. I really can’t think of much else as I prepare myself for the upcoming Devon Horse Show. It has been a long road to this point but the really hard work is still ahead. Although I know it will be disappointing if I do not do as well as I want to, I want to be able to know I did everything I could to compete at my best. I found out I qualified for Devon late on a Friday night. Monday afternoon after school, it was business as usual at my barn with my trainer John Mastriano. This has how it has been for the last years. We train four days, sometime five days a week, and then we travel to shows on the weekends to compete. When the Winter Circuit begins, I spend six weeks competing at the Gulf Coast Classic, which is one of the double A shows for riders looking to qualify for Devon, Pennsylvania National and Washington International horse show. This commitment takes me away from family, friends, and school, but these are some of the sacrifices I have to make if I want to be a strong competitor.

With Devon around the corner I start to let my mind wonder. I worry if I will have good rounds. WIll I make my trainer, groom, family and most of all my pony proud or will I let them down. I start to focus on mistakes I have made in the show ring instead of the obstacles I have overcome and the accomplishments I have achieved. I remind myself that I should be proud that I have qualified both of my ponies. When I am not riding I enjoy playing soccer so because of that I became very interested in following Carli Lloyd. After reading her book All Heart I have learned that all athletes have good days and bad. These days can be during practice, at a smaller competition or a major qualifier. Being an athlete at any level will have its ups and downs and that what is most important is to train your hardest, be committed, and have your mindset in the right place so you can give it your all. As a small and medium pony rider, I have stressed a lot about qualifying for the major horse shows, training and also keeping up with my academics. The stress for many people can get to their head and cause them to lose focus. On the other hand, you can maintain your calmness and focus on the importance of the day. Stress is only something that is in your head, but can show in your physical actions. You may not realize that you are just fighting against yourself. The mind set of an 11-year-old girl is much more complex than you think when you are in the sport that takes so much time away from family, friends, and school most of the time, but as they say, hard work pays off. See you at Devon! -Erica Van Dyken

From The Book LLC Congratulations on qualifying for The Devon Horse Show 2017. If you will in fact be showing, we would like you to know the photo options that are available to all exhibitors at Devon. As the official photographer and the exclusive exhibitor photographer for all hunter, jumper, equitation, leadline, sidesaddle and breeding classes, we do photograph all exhibitors. Those photos are available for purchase on our website daily and are listed by division. In addition to prints in assorted sizes we also offer low resolution digital downloads ($50.00) and high resolution digital downloads ($250.00). As an extension to our business of creating Books for exhibitors at horse shows we also offer a Private Client photo program on an extended basis. We would like to offer those services for a short-term basis at The Devon Horse Show 2017. For a one-time fee of $500, you can become a Private Client at Devon 2017. Private client status affords you not only the standard performance shots in the show ring and award presentations but also additional photo coverage of your Devon experience. Those photos will include artistic, wide-angle photos and candids of you and your horse as well as trainers, grooms, family and friends in a manner that we have become known for in our Book projects. Each Private Client will have exclusive access to a private photo

gallery on our website. Low resolution digital downloads are completely free and you will be given special Private Client pricing of 50% off our standard price list for any additional orders you wish to make. Photos are uploaded daily and may be used for personal use and on social media.

To be added to our Private Client list you must commit to this program before the first class of your division at Devon. Once a division has started, we can no longer make additions to our shooting list. If you are going to be showing more than one horse in one or more divisions the registered rider will receive photos for each of those entries all at the same $500.00 fee. *Some exclusions do apply. We will be unable to accommodate leadline and breeding entries for this program but as noted they are photographed.

Wanda Wellbred...”You didn’t hear it from me!” Well My Dears, it seems like one recently broken up equestrian couple has decided that drama knows no age or boundaries of decency. It seems that dressing in clothes made for children and parading around like a duck lipped contestant on RuPaul’s Drag race is the way to show your ex what he is missing- oh and a million Instagram photos of your new boyfriend- who looks like he got stuck in a hay bailer and hasn’t taken a shower in about 10 years. On the other hand, posting drunk rantings and drunk selfies and acting like a boorish overgrown frat boy is not exactly making anyone jealous either- in fact it shows what non catches you both are! Karma always has a way of paying a visit to those who deserve it most. It seems one recently incarcerated rider had no shame in spreading horrible lies about other people- even people who she claimed were her friends. One of her favorite lies to spread was calling people drug addicts or alcoholics- well, according to the arrest record and – being found high on drugs and in possession of drugs in a crack house in the Midwest- probably means that you are the drug addict. She evidently still had paddock boots and half chaps on when she was found and had been on a 4 day drug binge leaving her horses without any care!! Without bail, she has been in jail for several months and of course has blamed everyone but herself for the situation. In other bizarre and substance abuse related news- it seems everyone’s favorite comic character is back on the sauce so-to-speak. Evidently they were fired from their most recent gig at one winter circuit after spending several days in their trailer taking drugs with their entourage while their clients and horses sat and missed classes-I’m sorry but really? Of course they have already landed a gig with the gypsy clan and are touring the shows like some bad comic con knock off- complete with

medieval jousting demonstrations over jumper coursesbut instead of an opponent they are smashing- literally – smashing half the jumps! It seems like lately the pot has been calling the kettle black- burned out- nuclear bomb wasteland lately!!! Honestly- people don’t even seem to care to hide their hypocrisy and double standards. Here is a small guide to help you My Dears not make these mistakes! 1. If you have been set down for repeated drug infractions by the USEF, do not get on facebook talking about integrity in the sport and the welfare of the horse 2. If you are constantly posting about horsemanship and holding those who cheat or abuse horses accountable for their actions- do not then turn around and like and love posts and status updates by trainers or riders that fit into #1 3. If you are a trainer please do not complain and talk trash about other riders or trainers- then turn around and complain about trainers spreading gossip about you or your barn. 4. If you talk about other riders and gossip about supposed friends and send emails and messages getting in other people’s business- and say nasty things about people behind their back- don’t then post a long tirade about friendship and how hurt you are by other people’s actions at horse shows. 5. If you mistreat your clients do not post long woe is me posts on face book when they leave. And lastly My Dears if you are too simple minded to have common sense and dignity to take responsibility –social media and the horse world is not for you! Until Next time my Dears!

This month’s featured pony:

SMALLWOOD MYSTIC

The Beginning Mystic is by Maple Side Wish List out of Rockin’ Robin by Rocky Creek’s Wendy Adonis. Breeder: Phyllis Jones Owner as a youngster: Robin Mellen: “He didn’t show on the line. We sold him to Chris Wynne in VA Beach. Chris sent him to Carla Butler for her daughter to break and show locally in southeastern VA for a year. Chris then sent him to Bibby Farmer to show in the greens in Ocala in 2015 where he was sold.“

www.thepaisleymagazine.com

From Mystic himself * Favorite treat - horse cookies * If you weren’t a show pony…what would you do for a career? I’d be all-star football player, a quarterback probably. *My favorite thing about being a show pony is getting braided and jumping – I like to show off! * My best friend is Thursday because we spend so much time together at the ring

Why trainer Christine Trigger loves Mystic: Mystic is very special to me. We bought him as a green pony for Zayna. It was a great experience for both of us. Mystic was a great green pony to make up. He is so athletic and confident. I love bringing him to the ring. He is a true show pony. and loves to jump. Zayna and Mystic have a great relationship! I’m so proud of both of them.

What Zayna has to say about Mystic * He is brave, sweet and cooperative. *He is fun to jump - he was young when I got him so seeing him grow into the pony he is now was very cool. *Winning all of the classes at WCHR week was so amazing! After the first day I felt pressured to do good again, but I rode my best and ended up winning champion and grand champion.

Photos by Emily Allongo

* Since we didn’t start showing until the middle of WEF (week 3) I didn’t think we would be able to be circuit champion, but he was so great this winter. I was so happy and proud when we were. *I’m very excited to show Mystic at Devon and I look forward to many more shows with him over the summer.

Mouse Diaries This little mouse’s life... April – a warm Tuesday Well, today was a letdown. My home was destroyed! How, you ask? Spencer saw me scurrying across the aisle towards my home under his tack trunk and announced it to everyone. Then, the trainer said that mice do indeed live under the tack trunks so the covers needed to be removed and shaken out. So, my home was wrecked. THE NERVE! I couldn’t chance them seeing me again during the day so I had to spend the whole night rebuilding my home. Luckily, my pal Whinny is very generous with his hay and said I can use as much as I want. April – a windy Wednesday By the way, my name is Johnny M. Elbereons, the most important mouse living at A.R. Academy. I live under Spencer’s tack trunk right in front of stall 2. My Best Friend Forever (BFF) is Whinny, Spencer’s pony, who lives in stall 2. I mostly like to hang out with the horses. The other mice aren’t very nice, the birds are extremely annoying with their constant cooing and I usually just like to eat the bugs – not socialize with them. One of my biggest laughs at the barn this month was watching Whinny giving Spencer’s mom a hard time. Spencer’s Mom was trying to help him pick Whinny’s hoof. Whinny would turn his head and gently nip at her bottom every time she tried to lift the hoof. (I could clearly hear her yelling about it.) Spencer was laughing his head off and said it looked like she had wet her clothes. I peeked through the stall door and he was right – it did look like that! I’m not sure if Spencer noticed, but Whinny was smiling and having the time of his life too. Do these humans know how silly they are? …to be continued

BELOVED IEA HORSE MAKES HORSE STARS HALL OF FAME

Ten outstanding horses have been selected to be included on the Horse Stars Hall of Fame for 2017 during the Old Salem May Horse Show in North Salem, New York. One special IEA horse, “Billy White Shoes,” is among the ten inductees for his life-changing impact on people. When the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) held its inaugural Interscholastic Invitational in 2002, “Billy White Shoes” was considered an exceptional draw. “Billy” went on to compete in several IEA National and Zone 5 finals and touched the lives of so many IEA members. “Billy was the centerpiece of our riding program at Andrews School. Everyone knew him and loved him. He could make any rider feel like a pro, and was considered the ‘wonder draw’ at IEA and IHSA events. He won classes from x-rails to 3’6” medals as he methodically packed his riders to predictably perfect rounds. I am honored that this horse shared so much of his life with me and with students in our programs. He was truly a horse of a lifetime for anyone that had the privilege of sharing his expertise. I am thrilled that he can be nationally recognized through the Horse Stars Hall of Fame. Many thanks to Equus Foundation and US Equestrian for honoring this wonderful horse that tapped the hearts of so many people!” stated Roxane Durant, IEA Co-Founder and Executive Director and owner of “Billy White Shoes.” The Equus Foundation and US Equestrian founded the Hall of Fame in 2013 to celebrate the extraordinary talent of horses and the magical bond between horses and people.
