Students earn honors at MITES competition Woodshop wins multiple awards RHS has been participating in Michigan Mazzie Castillo Staff Reporter

Industrial and Technology Education Society (MITES) for 87 years, a competition for clay models. Two students from the auto shop class displayed outstanding performances in the competition. Senior Austin Marsili, who built a clay model of a 1969 Pontiac GTO, won the grand prize at regionals at Dakota High School, then moved on to states at Saginaw Valley State University, where he won sixth place. Freshman Miranda Rumfelt won first place at regionals before moving on to states. She won first place, most creative, and a $10,000 scholarship. Rumfelt said that she did not expect to earn such a high honor for her clay model of a 1970 AMX, thinking at first that an honorable mention would be in her sights. “I just started freaking out. I was just really happy; I was flabbergasted,” Rumfelt said regarding her win. Rumfelt first found interest in clay models and cars because of her father. Her dad took her down to the auto shop area during the eighth grade orientation. Joseph Tregembo Jr., auto shop teacher, informed Rumfelt that there were classes where she could put her love for drawing and cars to use. She ended up going every Thursday, starting with miniature clay models, but eventually working her way making fullsized car models.

On May 8, four students from the RHS Woodshop competed with other high school woodshop students for regionals at Dakota High School. All of the students from Roseville placed. Senior Kal Willard placed second with his gun cabinet, also in second, senior Justin Chechlowski with his bookcase, and junior Danny Bozek with his bio-flame coffee table. Winning first place out of the four is senior Nick Boos with his gun cabinet. After a long day at the competition, the four students were scheduled to have their projects take a trip to Saginaw Valley University for states. Since May 8, the four students have gone to Saginaw and after a long day Friday May 15, they did not win any more awards besides Nick Boos, who won honorable mentions for his cherry gun cabinet. “My cherry gun cabinet won first place in the tri-county regionals, and then at states it took honorable mentions. Holmes taught me to be a man of my word, not a word of a man.” senior Nick Boos said. The states that were held in Saginaw Valley University were sponsored by M.I.T.E.S. May 6. They all stayed at Fort Custer in Augusta, MI, a military base stationed by North Branch Kalamazoo River, big enough to house all the schools participating in the event, returning Friday, May 15. The first day was treated as a preparatory day, brushing up on knowledge and facts about certain environmental subjects. The next day is where it all starts, competition day. The following morning is the day for finishing the competition and in the afternoon is the awards ceremony. The RHS Envirothon came in first place for aquatic etymology, third in forestry, second in wild life, second
in community service project, and an overall second place for the entire competition. They were all awarded a $3,000 scholarship each for their hard work, a whopping five medals, and of course, bragging rights. Not everyone can say they came in second place at states for an Envirothon competition. One of their competitors Glen Lake won the event for the third year in a row taking home six medals. Nonetheless, it was an amazing experience for everyone to network and meet new people. “It was really fun, I would have liked to go to Missouri but we did a lot better than we ever did before. We almost got to nationals; we were a few points short from the first place team,”senior Nathan Richendollar said.
Ronald Holmes, the advanced woodshop teacher although not taking any awards home during states he was still very proud of his students for working hard throughout the years he has had them. “Our main objective was to get to states, which we did by getting a first and three second places against Dakota and Fraser high schools woodshops. I’ve had all these kids for four years and one for three, these students over three to four years they went from basic woodworking to a now more advanced entry level carpenters whom cabinet shops and construction employers are always seeking to employ. I am proud of all of them for working hard over the years,” Holmes said.

Marching band leaders set for 15-16 Every year, the RHS marching band holds tryouts for section leaders and drum majors. The drum majors are the head of the band; they conduct at the shows and control the whole band. The section leaders are the leaders of their sections. They make sure their section memorizes their music and keep them in shape for the marching season. Here are your 2015-2016 senior marching band leaders: Julianna Tribu Copy Editor
Flute Section Leader Brooke Blackwell: “I was really excited, even though I was the only one that tried out for it. I am going to help the flutes be the best that they can be.”
Clarinet Section Leader Tara Theut: “I have been waiting three years to be one and it felt pretty good to get section leader. Being able to help my section to be the best they can be is probably my favorite.”
Percussion Section Leader Amanda Schultz: “It felt great. I need to put the drum line into the best shape ever and to continually work on their skills, and make sure they know what they’re doing.”
Head Drum Major Curtis Mack: “It feels amazing. I have worked so hard and prepared myself for this honorable position for about a year now. I plan to reinforce a positive attitude which I believe is the catalyst of motivation and determination which also ties in with work ethic for the band. I plan to be an assertive, yet a benevolent leader and show passion that I would like for everyone to emulate. I feel as if it is necessary for me to lead in my life once again, for it makes me a more mature person, it allows me to know how to deal with people in a demanding position and have a profound understanding of leadership and music in general.” Assistant Drum Major Ronald Harrington Jr.: “It’s pretty cool. I am pretty excited to be able to guide the band to their full potential. Being able to help people progress and get better at what I hope they love.”
Trombone Section Leader Joe Foster: “I was happy and excited about it. My favorite part would probably be the fact that you can help everyone out and you know they are going to listen to you and just get more respect overall.”
Alto Section Leader Autumn VanDamme: “I was really happy and all of the tension went away because I was really nervous. I think we are going to be better this year than last year. We are better at memorizing our music and I just want to have fun with it.”
Low Brass/Reeds Section Leader Nikolai Lineberger: “It feels pretty good. Being responsible for the good things that I produce out of my group is my favorite part.”
Trumpet Section Leader Mckenzie Garbarino: “I was pretty excited just because I was nervous about it. My favorite part of being section leader has to be being able to share knowledge with the others and being able to help them along the same way that you have been helped before.”

not include the countless volunteers and supporters that also came to help. RCSSF raised about three scholarship amounts, which comes out as a total of around $3000. First place fell into the shoes of a Roseville parent, Walter Kotelniski, shortly followed by senior Anthony Moss. “I ran it for my buddy because he would’ve wanted anyone to and it was honestly an amazing experience seeing everyone come out, students and teachers,” Moss said. The race was truly an amazing event, and to top off the excitement, there was a special man who found Joe and this race so inspiring even at 90 years old. Don Clark, a navy World War II veteran, finished the race in just over an hour. “I gave him my medal because I knew it was something that Joe would have done,” senior Meaghan Allen said. This race is an opportunity to raise money to help student further their education, but this year’s event brought people together in the community in honor of Manfreda.

Exchange is not just a year in life; it is a life in a year Emilie Windelin Staff Reporter
As the school year is heading towards the end, so is my year as a foreign exchange student. I have had some of the best experiences of my life here, and the thought of leaving is even more terrifying than leaving my home country, Denmark, ever was. Coming to the United States is without a doubt the best decision I have ever made. Now that it is almost over, I think back to the day it all started. It is hard to explain the feeling I had when I sat on the plane about nine months ago. On one hand, I could not contain my excitement, because I have been dreaming of this experience for years. On the other hand, it is insane how much you can miss something you just saw a few hours ago. The thought of not being able to see my friends and family for ten months, while being in a completely foreign country, was terrifying. However, the key is to shut it all out and focus on the goal: to have the best year of my life.
noticeable to me. I know I have changed over the months, and I wonder how it is going to feel to be among my old friends and family in Denmark. The thought of going home scares me, and I do not know how am ever going to say goodbye to everything I have here. I wish I could bring things like football games, spirit week, Thanksgiving, and prom with me back to my country. However, the fact that I cannot just makes the memories even more special. One thing I will miss a lot is the American “school spirit.” It is far from anything I know from home, and it has been so much fun to be a part of. For example, going to a football game and seeing everyone in their school shirts and painted faces is something I had never experienced before I came here. To see how almost the entire school partici When I look back today, I pated in supporting the team was am happy to see that I have expeincredible to me, and I had a lot rienced everything I wanted to and of fun. Nevertheless, the most popular question has been if I prefer the United States over Denmark, and the truth is I could never possibly choose. I have the most amazing family and friends here in The States, but I have the same thing waiting for me back in my country. Even though, I am excited to go home and see everyone I have missed so much, the thought of leaving Michigan breaks my heart. I love this place, and every single person I have met here.

However, my Christmas turned out to be one of the best I have ever had. It was so interesting to see, up close, how the same holiday is celebrated in different cultures. Speaking of holidays, we cannot forget Thanksgiving. Even though, Thanksgiving is not celebrated in Denmark, I intend to keep the holiday alive in my family at home. Being thankful for what you have, and showing that appreciation, is something I have learned the true meaning of while being abroad.
As an exchange student, I have been asked a number of interesting questions about my home. I have heard anything from, if we have TVs in Denmark and if we live in caves, to if we celebrate 4th
In the end, I would like to say thank you so much to my host family, for taking me in and being the best family I could possibly wish for. Thank you to my best friends, Kayla, Juli and Rayeanne for always being there for me. I have had some of the best times with you guys, and I do not know where I would be today without you. Last, but not least, thank you to my cross country team, my track team, my newspaper class, and all the other students, teachers and staff at RHS that have been part of making this year the best year of my life. There is no way I could ever show how grateful I am for everything I have experienced this year. This is my final story, my final deadline and my final goodbye. I will miss you all so much, and I hope we can stay in touch. Goodbye, Roseville, take care.

It is that time of year again when you want to find fun summer vacations or adventures to go on, but you have no idea where to go. A lot of people would say they have not been anywhere much out of the Detroit area, or they usually go out of state. Why go anywhere else when you can explore in your own backyard? Here in Michigan we have an upper peninsula, and five lakes, with permissible weather, these places become advantagable to summer activities. Typically people do not think they can find fun things to do other than be on a boat somewhere or the beach. At the mid tip of the U.P. is Tahquamenon Falls. Macomb County is at the corner of Michigan’s “thumb,” therefore, for traveling the thumb isn’t too far. You can drive along the coast of Lake Huron from southeast to north of the thumb and go for endless miles just left of the water. As you drive along the coast, there are several camp sites

Seniors Kye Dozier and Eleni Haralampopoulous, junior Elandra Sledge, and sophomore Kayla Richards earned a spot at the upcoming state meet running the 4x400. They broke the previously held school record of 4:18 with a 4:06 winning time. “The girls were very coachable”, coach Reymond Cabarris said. “(They are) hard working and dedicated. They’ve been with it since freshman year and have come a long way. They kept working at it and, despite not seeing eye-to-eye all the time, they kept working at it and knew that the coaches only had their best intentions at heart. Hats off to them.” There was a freshman and sophomore meet on May 20 at Grosse Pointe North, a “Champions of Macomb County” meet at Warren Woods on May 21, and State Championships at Rockford, just outside of Grand Rapids, coming up soon.
SOFTBALL The girls’ softball team is holding their own in the M.A.C Gold conference with an in league record of 5-6, beating Lamphere by a score of 8-4 with their losses coming from Marysville, Port Huron, and Warren Mott. Overall, they are 10-12 with wins against Parkway Christian, East Detroit and Fitzgerald. The loss to Port Huron was a close one with the Big Reds coming out on top with a walk off hit in the bottom of the seventh. “I am so excited for districts and very proud of my team. I am going to miss playing with the senior girls and make sure I can do all I can for them at districts,” junior pitcher Eryn VanderVlucht said.
Varsity Girls’ SOCCER The girls’ varsity soccer team has been dominating the M.A.C Silver division. In their games they were 9-5-1, this means they have nine wins, five losses, and one tie. After finishing 12-5 last year, varsity coach Keith Marzec and company have been lighting up the radar gun and the opposing team with their dominating squad. They are the new division champions, with a divisional record of 11 wins and one loss to add to their overall 14-3 record. Their pitching has been outstanding behind senior Austin Morrow, who has been lights out with a record of three wins and two losses, 47 strikeouts, and a .988 earned run average, junior Evan Gates with an amazing six and one record, 63 strikeouts, a .470 ERA, plus a save, and junior Nikko Bohnhoff, with a perfect three and zero record, 36 strikeouts, a 1.33 ERA. It’s all about the teamwork The lady Panthers of the junior varsity soccer team played a spectacular season this spring. With a final score of 4-9-1 the girls were very proud of each other. “I’m so grateful to have played with this group of girls and I’m sad that the seasons over. We had a great season and everyone improved a lot,” junior Courtney Hietikko said. At their last game on May 20, the soccer team played a rough game and won 3-2. “They pulled their efforts together and decided to have fun this game and their team work paid off in a win,” coach Katie Scheff said.
Trash talk time with Tony and Troy: Tom Brady Troy Frank Tony Dombrowski Sports Editor Staff Reporter
On Jan. 18, the New England Patriots beat the Indianapolis Colts 45-7 in the NFL AFC Championship game. Soon after the game, reports were rumored that the balls used had been deflated in the Patriots locker-room. Quarterback Tom Brady and Head Coach, Bill Belichick denied the rumors and went on to win the Super Bowl soon afterwards. Fast forward to May where an investigation by criminal attorney and litigation partner at the New York law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, and Garrison LLP, Ted Wells concluded that Brady was generally aware of the deflation of the footballs. This was an official report because he was the leading investigator
of the issue. More rumors surfaced that he would be suspended for this. About two weeks later, the NFL handed Brady a four game suspension, and the Patriots stripped of their 2016 first round draft pick, 2017 fourth round draft pick, and fined $1 million. Nothing has been said by the Patriots’ front office or by Brady about their involvement, even after the report. Tony: Even if so-called reports say that Brady is guilty, there is no evidence from anybody from the Patriots camp or front office. Nothing has been said regarding the issue yet and until they do, nobody should have any punishment handed to them. The NFL front office should hold everything back until they have evidence from somebody working for the New England Patriots organiza-
tion that says that the balls were deflated in any way, shape, or any form. You should not be able to tell that someone was “cheating” until it was proven from the “cheater” themselves. Troy: If this report is true, then Brady deserves much more than a four game suspension. He was the person using these deflated footballs, which means he was the most likely person to notice the change in air pressure. He then goes out on national television and denies the reports, which is even worse. There’s a saying out there: if you do something stupid, you get grounded. Lie about it, and you get a beating. So as the punishment, he gets a “Player in possession of Marijuana” charge? No, he cheated during a game in which the winner plays in the big-
gest sporting event of the year, and then lies about it in everybody’s faces. He needs to receive a three-quarter to full season suspension. Nobody can disgrace the game of football and walk away basically scott-free the way Brady is doing.

Staff Farewell 11 Editor’s Last Farewell
So before you go and think this is going to be a long story or anything, I just want you to know that it is not. This is going to be the first time I get to express myself in our own school paper, which is very unusual for me to do. I usually just write school related stories or sit behind the computer and spend hours working on layout and Photo Shop, piecing our paper together to make each story fit on the pages. This is the one chance that I get to tell you about how I spent my time here at RHS. I started high school thinking that it was going to be similar to what you see in the movies, but when I walked into RHS I realized that it wasn’t. I will be honest with you that I didn’t like being in a new school the first few weeks. I was nervous about what it is going to be like starting high school and whether or not I was going to get lost trying to find my classes. But in reality, I never did because the school in my eyes appeared Meaghan Allen Co-editor-in-chief
a lot smaller than what I thought it was going to be. At first, I had no idea where I belonged or who I was. I started running cross country my freshman year, and still had no idea where I belonged. I came in knowing that I would still have a few close friends from middle school. But then, I met more and more people throughout high school. To this day, I am still close with a few people that I have met my freshman year. I am grateful to have wonderful people as friends. I would like to mention Alaric, Michelle, John, Karli, Jonah, Joe Heaton, Rachel, Nikolai, and Andrew. I would also like to mention my wonderful boyfriend, Joseph, for putting up with me for the last 10 months. Newspaper, cross country and band have also taught me to work with people that I may not be able to get along with in any way, but I would like to thank those people for teaching me a life lesson. This will help me in the future. Mrs. Drouin, I would like to thank
you for putting up with me for two hours a day everyday this year. It meant a lot. I would also like to thank you for letting me vent to you about my problems that I have had throughout the school year. I have no idea who I would go to if I never had gotten the chance to know you. You made me become the person I am today. I cannot thank you enough for that. Coach O, and my cross country team, I could write a whole novel about you guys if I were allowed to do so, but Coach O, you were the best cross country coach in the entire world. You pushed me through your crazy workouts that you knew that I didn’t like very much, but they were worth it. The one thing that your workouts taught me was that I can accomplish anything that I set my mind to even if the task is near impossible to do, which is the one thing that I will take with me everywhere I go. Mr. Chesher, I would personally like to thank you for introducing me to the bassoon. I never thought that double reed instruments existed. Now it is time to say goodbye to RHS and walk across the stage to receive our
Thirteen years of goodbyes Kayla Harvey Copy Editor
After a long 13 years, RHS seniors are walking their final steps in high school. Roseville has offered so many opportunities for over a decade to these soon to be graduates, and many of them have taken full advantage and are now going to great places. I cannot imagine not walking these halls anymore; I still think of walking through the halls of elementary school as a kindergartener, like many of you probably do. I started out in Warren Consolidated Schools for my first two years, and I never belonged. I was always the odd one of the group and nobody ever wanted to play on the swings or play hopscotch with me, so I always played alone. My brother, Tj, went to school with me also, but after numerous times of us both getting in trouble for things we did not do, our parents pulled us out to go to Roseville schools. Tj and I went to Arbor Elementary until I was in fourth grade and Tj moved to middle school. In the two years I went to Arbor, my reading level shot
up to a middle school level, and continued to increase every year there, that is the Roseville education. Fourth grade was the year that truly changed my outlook on school; I loved going, and it was my escape. I switched schools from Arbor to Fountain in fifth grade, and only knew my younger sister who now went to school with me and was my only friend. That was until I broke a well liked classmate’s leg and ended up being put on safety squad with him to become friends after he was out of his cast. That is where I met the person who I have had my longest bond with, even to this day. I met Trevor, and many that know me also know him, seven years later. Without elementary, I would not have had the knowledge, discipline, and friends that I have today. I went to Roseville Middle School, which I owe everything to the staff there. Anyone who went to RMS and knew me, knew about my long hair, I was known even then for my luscious locks. Middle school is where I discovered my love for science, thanks to Mr.Goff
who helped me even on the times I got annoying and on the days I used, “We have a track meet today, I need a nap to do good,” to get out of assignments, which never did work. Mr.C, the counselor at RMS, was my rock, he knew how to help me before I even told him my problem, and for that I am forever grateful. At RMS, I discovered the most simple yet most important rule; be yourself, because nobody walks in your shoes but you. I remember in eighth grade, I called my mom crying because I was scared to go into high school, I was so tiny and I was scared my brother and his friends were going to put me into a locker as a freshman. I was constantly scared of “freshman week,” getting lost in the school, and teachers hating me. When I did enter RHS for the first time, I was probably the most cliché freshman, scared and small and lost. Luckily, my brother was a senior at this time, so he helped me out a little; the teachers helped a lot. I had a great freshman year, better than I imagined. When I was a sophomore, I switched to Fraser,
which made me appreciate RHS even more. I switched back after two and a half weeks, thanks to Mr. Hedemark being so understanding. Ever since, I have been doing my work, competing with varsity cheerleading, running and throwing for track, and making memories I will never forget. I look back and think, where do the times go when I was playing duck duck goose, or playing goal defender? Why was I so tall now, and when did I actually grow into my ears? I look at my prom pictures and think back to when I was all dressed up for my very first day of school, or compare my senior pictures with all my grade school pictures, time goes by so fast your last year. The best advice I could ever give RHS students, is take advantage of everything. Make great friends, I have some of the best ones you could ever imagine. Join sports and

diploma, and take that next step. clubs, you might not enjoy practice, but you will love it in the long run, and be yourself. You will regret everything you did if you graduate pretending to be someone you are not. Roseville has given me the chance to become who I am, and to love that person. A special thanks to all my teachers, I appreciate you all, but Mr. King, Mr. Clulo, Mr. Palmer, Mr. Marzec and Mrs. Drouin, thank you for pushing me and making me be a better person. Thank you for shaping me into the soon to be graduate and setting me up for success at EMU this fall. Mr. Hedemark, thank you for always seeing me when you were busy and making me laugh and being so understanding, no wonder my family loves you. My friends thank you for standing by me, through everything. Kye, Trevor,
Juli, Emilie, and Justin, thank you so much for always being there, I love you all so much. To all the underclassmen, take over my life when I am gone. Join the cheer team, it was the best decision I have made to try out, and track taught me to push myself, get the most out of your high school experience. Newspaper has given me the opportunity to become a better writer and person, and meet some of the most inspiring and understanding people, print is not dead. As I plan on telling teachers goodbye, sending my best friend back to her country, Trevor off to the army, and friends off while I go to school, I will always remember the day I was walking into RHS for the first time, and now in less than a month, I will be walking out of the doors that I have considered my second home for the past four years. I will never forget the memories from homecoming, prom, ACT, lip syncs, or the amazing staff as I take the biggest leap in my life by going to college. You have prepared me for these next four years as best as you could Roseville, and once again, it is all up to me to choose my path and reach my full potential.
