Dream big, run fast in memory of Joe On Saturday, May 9, the Roseville Community Schools Scholarship Foundation (RCSSF) will have their second annual Dream Dash fundraiser. A few changes have been made to the event this year, with the most notable one being change of the name. In honor of Joseph Manfreda, who ran 1st in last year’s Dream Dash, the event will from this year forward be known as the Joe Manfreda Dream Dash. “I feel very proud and very honored,” Shannon Hoffman said about the fact that the fundraiser will be named after her son. “I have been practicing a lot for the run, and I actually Emilie Windelin Staff Reporter

have pretty much my entire family coming in from out of state and they will all either be walking or running.” Another change is that this year’s race will be timed, by Hanson’s Running Shop. The main goal of the fundraiser is to raise money for students pursuing higher education, and that is reached by accepting donations and a small registration fee from runners. Therefore, the price to participate is $25 including a t-shirt if you sign up in advance, and $30 the day of the race. Registrations start at 9am, and continue until the gun goes off at 10am. The run is a 5k course (3.1 miles), which you can either choose to

walk or run. However, if you are not interested in participating in the run itself, RCSSF is still looking for volunteers to help hand out t-shirts, show the runners the way along the route and much more. “I think Joey would be so proud to see the way everyone is still supporting him. When he started running, he really came out of his shell and that is when he started getting a passion for everything he did in life,” Hoffman said. For more information and signup sheets, visit www.rcs.misd.net or pick up a sheet in the Main Office. Go help out a great cause, Roseville, in memory of a remarkable student and friend.

of them are killed, but you are just injured. How are you going to explain to four families that you were driving under the influence and killed their family member, even if they were under the influence as well? Now you can be convicted for a DUI, underage drinking and four deaths on the count of you.

The car on the RHS lot represents the outcome of dangerous decisions.

In 2010, 211 teens were killed due to drunk driving; 62% of them were passengers. Losing a family member or a close friend is hard enough; envision losing one to something like drunk driving and it was not their fault. Imagine going to a party with your friend and you are all drinking, the party ends and now it is time to go home, but you do not make it there. Let’s say you crash and you are the driver, with four passengers and the four

To drink and drive alone is horrible enough, but to put other innocent lives in your hands as well is pathetic. Life is already too short, and for a life to be taken because of someone else’s mistakes is just ridiculous. Passengers that are aware of the driver being drunk are just as guilty as the driver. To get in the car knowing that they are drunk or have been drinking, is basically asking for something bad to happen, whether it is an

On May 15, Roseville Community Schools invite you all to their yearly Family Fun Night. It will be a night full of fun activities for all ages. The night is geared mainly towards preschool and elementary school-aged students, but anyone is welcome. There will be snacks, inflatables, carnival games, prizes and a petting zoo, mostly donated by our local businesses and private donors. It goes on from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, and admission is absolutely free. So come and enjoy a fun night with your family.

There is nothing that can justify drinking and driving, and if you are around someone drinking and they are trying to drive somewhere, take their keys and call them a cab. Or even let them stay the night with you, a night of them sleeping there or catching a cab late in the night is much better and way more safe, than to them to drink and drive.

RHS seniors prep for prom Kiara Fluker Prom Staff Reporter is one of

many exciting things about high school. Even though it can be really expensive, it is one of the most memorable events of one’s life. Prom is now days away, and some RHS seniors are ready for the big day. After prom, there is graduation, then everyone goes their separate ways in life with different destinations. “Prom has been very, very stressful,” senior Ashley Jackson said. “I’m taking my favorite cousin with me to prom and we’re wearing light peach. Prom is something I always couldn’t wait to attend, but the closer it gets the sadder I am that my dad is not here to see his baby go off to prom and open a new chapter in my life. R.I.P.” Jackson said. “I’m wearing red to prom, but actually finding the perfect red dress has been very stressful,” senior Lexie Griffith said. “Wearing makeup and dressing re-

I’m not going with anyone, but it is okay prom is not at all necessary to have a date, I can look beautiful alone, plus I have my friends. It has been a very nerve wracking, but great experience so far. I love dressing up and I cannot wait until the day arrives” Griffith said. “Prom was the easiest thing ever” senior Andrew Paton said. “I am going with Matthew Pilotto and my tuxedo is blue.” Paton said. “Prom has been really stressful at times, but it will all be worth it” senior Arieanna Rickle said. “My date, who is also my lovely boy friend, Jordan Richards, and I are wearing aqua to prom” Rickle said. Other events such as: homecoming, athletic events, and pep rallies happen every year of high school, but prom is a once in a lifetime occurrence that seniors hope to remember forever.

Eugene Randolph: inspiring students for 50+ years RHS At 80 years old, RHS art teacher Stephen Moore Eugene RanWeb Design Editor dolph still wakes up in the morning looking forward to work. He claims that the variety of subject matter in the classes he teaches, along with his excellent relationships with students, is what helps him stay so interested in continuing. “I think the best part about doing this is seeing the students grow and mature; seeing someone come in as a freshman and go out as senior and a respectable young adult, and knowing that I helped them with that along the way,” he said. After completing his undergraduate studies at Wayne State University, and later transferring to the University of Michigan, Randolph moved around various local school districts before coming to Roseville. At the moment, he is unsure of whether or not he is going to retire. “I’m just not the kind of person Jenna Stankley Layout/Page Editor

who likes not working,” Randolph said. As a young adult, Randolph had essentially given up on going to school. Ready to drop out at 16, Randolph’s attitude was changed by many positive influences along the way. One high school teacher in particular took him “under her wing” and refused to give up on him, pushing him to move forward. Included among those inspirations is a young man he met in college, the grandchild of slaves, who continued to push him forward. This man, being the grandchild of slaves, carried three $100 bills on a belt with him at all times, to provide himself with a sense of security and success. When asked what his idea of success was, Randolph replied, “My success is in my children. Seeing who they’ve grown to become; doctors, lawyers, just knowing I’ve had a part in that is one of the best feelings. Not just my actual kids, but these ones too.

Knowing I have gotten through with kids who are just like I was, and lifted them up in any way, is my success. It’s my way of paying back those people who did the same for me.” When it comes to family, Randolph’s wife Janet of 43 years and his 5 children.

Despite whether or not Randolph decides to retire this year, he will continue to be looked up to by staff and students alike, who will always take with them the life lessons and stories that he loves to tell; and we ourselves love to listen to.

The voice that will not go unheard Kayla Harvey In Michigan, Copy Editor there are currently four counties who use gas chambers as a means of euthanizing animals, one of which is abolishing this method whether or not the bill making this illegal gets approved in the House. Many of Michigan’s shelters have the option, but do not use this method at this time. These animal gas chambers can take up to 25-30 minutes to end an animal’s life, and may not always be effective. It also causes extreme distress and suffering to the animals compared to a shot that could be used to put an animal down within minutes shutting the brain down before the vital organs, making death less painful and quicker. Gas chambers using carbon monoxide shut down vital organs first, and causes panic within the euthanizing chambers which may contain more than one animal. More than 20 states still use gas chambers; Michigan is one who has a bill in play to make these chambers illegal. Senator Rick Jones introduced bill 354 in the Sen-

ate in the attempt to make the use of gas chambers in Michigan illegal. The bill was passed unanimously 37-0, and will be up for consideration next in the House, but not before Roseville made its impact.

Hopefully other states will see and realize it is inhumane to kill these poor animals in this way. I just want to make a change, and speak out for those animals that can’t take a stand” Brinley said. And that is exactly what happened. On April 21, Brinley received an email from the office of Senator Steve Bieda asking to speak with Brinley about the legislation. On April 22, Brinley spoke with the Senators office and was told how the bill will be put before the house again for consideration, and all that can be done is wait and see what the House does with the bill, but many are hoping they will pass the bill to make the use of gas chambers in euthanizing animals illegal. There are a total of 25 superhero movies between May 2015 and Dec. 2020 that will show everyone how great it is to be a comic book nerd. For starters, there is a little film you may have heard of called Avengers: Age of Ultron. Many are predicting this movie to bank over 200 million dollars in its opening much like its predecessor, The Avengers (2012). Why? Because Marvel Studios, which produces this film and others related to it like Iron Man (2008) and Thor (2011), has a track record of making good movies for all audiences. If you are a movie fan or comic book nerd, you should be super excited, no pun intended, for the upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Red Wings illustrious streak continues for 24 straight years Whatever the Tony Dombrowski outcome of this Staff Reporter year’s playoffs, the Detroit Red Wings are one of the most illustrious franchises in the National Hockey League today. They are an original six team who is no stranger to winning. They have won 11 Stanley Cups, six conference championships, six Presidents’ trophies, and 19 division championships in their historic legacy as a franchise. But those are only some of the accomplishments the Wings have to show off. Their biggest accomplishment as a franchise is their consecutive playoff streak. For the past 24 seasons, the Red Wings have always been one of those 16 teams to fight for a Stanley Cup championship. The streak is the largest in NHL history for consecutive playoff appearances by nine seasons, and is one of the largest streaks in sports as a whole. With all the success this team has had, the Wings can be concluded as one of the best teams in sports history; however, there were some rocky patches that almost ended the historic streak, even when it had just begun. Before the streak had begun in the 1990-1991 season, the Red Wings were a team facing many problems. They were still having haunts from their “Dead Wings” era that lasted almost 20 years. During the 1967-82 seasons, the Wings had only made the playoffs twice and only won one playoff series. They went through 14 coaches, not counting interim, with none of them lasting over three seasons. Many of the loyal fans that still cheered for the team despite being a joke to the NHL wanted serious change. After Mike Illitch was hired to

be the new owner of the Red Wings, he made sure change would benefit the future would come. One of those changes was the drafting of Steve Yzerman. Yzerman, a center from the Peterborough Petes, was a hot draft pick who was predicted to go first round in the draft. Behind Yzerman, the team began winning again; winning their first division title in over 20 years, winning more playoff series, and making the conference finals were just some of the acolytes. After missing the playoffs in the 1989-90 season, the streak had begun, in the 1990-91 season, the Wings made the playoffs, beginning what they did not know at the time, the famous streak that continues today. Following more acquiring’s of people such as Nick Lidstrom and Darren McCarty years later, the team continued their success. After acquiring head coach Scotty Bowman from the defending Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadians, the Wings made their first finals appearance in 29 years in the 1994-95 season. However, losing in four games to New Jersey. It only took the Wings two more seasons to get back to the finals, in the 1996-97 season. This time, they won their first cup since 1955, beating Philadelphia in four games. Then the next season, they went back to finals and won the championship again in four games, securing the first back-to-back championships in hockey since the Pittsburg Penguins in the 1991-92, and 1992-93 seasons. The streak continued through all of the 1990s as the Wings were starting to look like the old team fans missed and remembered from the “Gordie Howe” era.

The 2000s were no different for the Wings. The team continued their success from the late 90s and won yet another Stanley Cup in the 2001-02 season, beating Carolina in five games. However, the team saw a little playoff drought from the 2003-07 seasons, where they saw early exits in the playoffs. During this time, head coach Scotty Bowman retired after the 2004-05 season. Because of this, the team welcomed their new head coach Mike Babcock. They also had captain Yzerman retire after the 2005-06 season. Because of this, the Wings made Lidstrom their new captain. After winning the Presidents’ Trophy in the 2007-08 season for best record in the whole league, the Wings continued their dominance and won their 11th Stanley Cup, their fourth in 11 years. After almost repeating their back-to-back championships in the following season, the Wings fell short to Pittsburg in the finals, losing in seven games. Then after a 2010 season where they saw an early exit form the playoffs, many key players from the championship teams during all four championships, retired. Including centerman Kris Draper, defense Brian Rafalski, winger Tomas Holmström, goalie Chris Osgood, and captain of the team Lidstrom. After all these huge names retired, the fans begun wondering if the streak was done for. However, it continued. New captain Henrik Zetterburg was determined to keep the streak alive. During the 2011-12 seasons, the Wings made moves calling up such players as right-winger Damien Brunner and goalie Jimmy Howard, to replace those who retired. The success of the

team continued as they made the playoffs again throughout the 2011-13 seasons. However injury caught up to the team during the 2013-14 season. With captain Zetterburg injuring his back and assistant captain Pavel Datsuyk injuring his knee, the streak hovered in the air. However after fighting till the last game, with the help of young stars, the Wings made it in for a 23rd straight year. Now after an improved season in 2014-15, the team made it 24 straight years. Making this an accomplishment that might never be beaten. “I feel like the streak has made this team fight harder during the season.” Coach Mike Babcock told reporters. “This streak is something that we fight hard to keep going for every year, and it makes us a better team because these guys can say they helped keep our streak alive.” “It shows how good we are, how tough we play, and how much we love playing for the city of Detroit, for these fans. To have this streak means we are one of the best teams in hockey every single year for the past 24 seasons.” Captain Zetterburg said to reporters. As the Red Wings begin to gear up for the NHL playoffs for the 24th straight year, the team still has a lot of work to do. But win or lose, all of us Red Wings fans are proud of our team. For year after year, we can say our team is one of the best in hockey to continue playing for another few weeks. And whether the streak continues for another 24 seasons or not, we can still say we went from the “Dead Wings” to the great hockey franchise you all know today.
