Social media can spread positive message Shyanne Methric Staff Reporter

In this day and age, social media is used by just about everyone. There are websites used to post messages to show to others, such as Facebook and Twitter, and there are more picture based websites like Instagram. People can use social media in many different ways, but more recently, there have been people who use social media to do something good for someone other than their own self. On Oct. 27, an RHS student created an account on Twitter, RHS Anonymous. The account immediately sent positive messages to other students after seeing them make tweets about being sad, feeling bad about themselves, or just how they had a bad day. Students, teachers, and even principals around RHS were talking about how great of an idea the account was. “It feels great. I didn’t make this account to get talked about, I just wanted to make people feel good about themselves, just by sending them a compliment or saying that it’ll be okay,” RHS Anonymous said. “There’s so much negativity, especially on

social media, and it feels amazing that people know they have someone to talk to if they’re feeling down.” When it comes to social media, there are people out there that will use these websites to

spread negativity around to others. They send horrible messages, put rude comments on their posts, or just make fun of others where everyone else can see. “Sometimes, high school can be hard. There’s so much stress put on students and it can really take a toll on them,” RHS Anonymous said. “I personally have suffered from depression,

so I know exactly how it feels. I wanted to be the person that I wish I had when I was dealing with it. I just needed someone to listen, to tell me that they were there.” Throughout the years, there

are students who take the time to spread negativity, but fortunately there are also students willing to take a stand against this negativity and promote a positive attitude over social media. “You can use social media for good to help promote positivity,” junior, Miriam Logan said. “You can spread a message for a good cause, if you see someone fighting you can get them to stop and let them know that they don’t need to do this. You can just be nice. There are so many things to promote positivity.” These days, social media is used for much more than just liking a picture or making comments on someone else’s posts. Now, some people are seeing how much Shyanne Methric others are hurting and are using social media to try changing that. “The letters to Santa was their first time writing a letter, as well as painting. When the child care class comes to visit them, they know they’ll be doing something special that allows them to move and utilize their creative minds,” Beeler said. The elementary students enjoy when their “high school friends” work with them, according to student’s Giovonni Battagli and Evie Sutton. They help them stay on task with their core subjects, while having fun. “It is very beneficial for the students, it gives them a one-on-one guide. As a teacher, it’s difficult to be in multiple places at once,” Beeler added.

Dziecolowski and her students plan activities for each grade to work on , which also helps the elementary teachers with lesson planning. Child care also helps by getting assigned to certain groups of kids to look over. In this group of kids, they help the students learn how to use and hold scissors, work with glue, assemble crafts, and write. When working with young children it is more than telling them what to do. Child care learns about different age groups through class instruction, in order to help them prepare when going to the schools. “They have a strict curriculum to follow and it enables them to do something hands on and fun.” Dziecolowski said “After taking this class, I would work with kids in the future,” junior Taylor McGuckin said.

Alumni back on the court RHS welcomes new parapro, On Friday, Dec. 4, RHS Alumni and current students alike flooded the gymnasium for the inaugural RHS Basketball Alumni game. Juwan Redd mentioned that his life has been great since he has graduated. He has done a lot within these last three years. Around the time he graduated, he was a Speedway employee. A few months later he moved up to a manager. “Life was great as a manager, but I was offered a much better job at OnStar Call Center. I took upon that job in February of 2015 and I’ve enjoyed every bit of it. I moved out of my mom’s place and got my own apartment.” Redd said. Matthew Santia is a 2001 graduate. Within these 14 years, he has accomplished so much in life. “I got my bachelor’s degree from the number one rated film school in the country, University of Southern California,” Santia said. “I got my masters degree in creative writing from Full Sail. I lived out in California for eight years and networked accordingly.” Santia said. He mentioned how he made great friends and got some insight into the film industry. He had a screenplay and wrote Be Opinionated which

was to be shot into a movie, but unfortunately, that fell apart when tax incentives fell through. He then went on to win the Oakland Community Film Festival for a short film he wrote called One Last Run. Santia has had recent success with his writing. “I wrote a short film called The Eulogy that just so happened to win the One Click Detroit Film Festival. Lando Witherspoon is a 2013 graduate, who achieved so much in just three years, taking some of his knowledge from his media class with teacher, Eric Mattison. “I started a company and a YouTube channel, The HipHopLab,” Witherspoon said. He has done interviews for many local Detroit rappers including: Lil’ George, Peezy, Doughboyz Cashout and many others. He has generated over $800 per month, just from his YouTube channel. Also, Witherspoon has been booked in Alaska, Boston, and Chicago to do video shoots. “I went to New York with battle rapper Calicoe for Summer Madness. I’ve shot over ten videos with over 150,000 views, totaling over a million views. The Force “Awakens” hype in old and new fans alike I find your lack of faith in Star Wars disturbing if you have not heard about the new movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens yet. The seventh movie in the blockbuster franchise releases today, and nobody has been unaffected by it. Whether you are, a family member, friend, colleague, peer, or a fan, this movie has been part of your life in some way. When the original three movies, Star Wars (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983), came out over 30 years ago, fanbases, religions, cult followings, and cosplayers have been formed around them. The people that make up those groups are now adults that have kids. Those same adults have showed their kids the trilogy that changed film, and in turn, created fans in them. There is no denying that “Star Wars”is a gigantic event that reaches all age groups. The Star Troy Frank

Wars fans of this school have a lot to say about the new sequel. “I am really excited, especially for the new volleyball droid, BB-8,” senior John Mitchell said. “Out of 6,437 on the excitement scale, I’m at a 6,434,” senior Sam Heaton said. “My excitement level is ten out of ten, and the expectation is about a seven and a half,” senior Tommy Butler said. Other Star Wars fans, however, did bring up how the prequels make them wary for the new movie, such as seniors Cole Bratten and Jacob

McLaren. They both stated how they want the new movie to be more like the original trilogy, and less like the prequels, Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005). McLaren brought up how the first six revolved around Anakin Skywalker/ Darth Vader, whether as a hero or as a villain. Personally, I am more excited than Luke Skywalker was when he was given the chance to leave his home planet of Tatooine to fight the evil Empire. Star Wars: The Force Awakens stars Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Leia Skywalker, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Dasie Ridley as Rey, and John Boyega as Finn.

No one is good at being nice any more and not a lot of people have the right mindset to do good things and treat people equally. Social experiments are used more and more, with channels on Youtube dedicated just for them.

Most people would stand by, but how many would actually stop bullying and help?

They give you an insight of how random people everywhere treat others and we can witness it. After the attack on Paris, a social experiment was performed in the mall where a young woman dressed in a hijab and walked around the mall. A woman and her daughter were walking through the mall when they spotted this person and the woman’s daughter looked up at her and asked if the person in the hijab would hurt them. Prejudice starts off at a young age. Stereotypes form and children are taught who and what to like and they grow up to teach their kids the same things. Social experiments help in these situations greatly because after a person reacts badly to the experiment and they are aware of the fact that it was not real, they think about their actions. “I feel like it helps people realize there’s more than one way to live life and it puts you in the shoes of others,” senior Leah Ferrante said. Social experiments make people think because most times you would hear someone say “Oh I would never do that to anyone,” but they lose sight of that when they are actually put to the test. Once someone decides to make a scenario in which they had the option to follow their own words and not be mean or prejudice, they turn around and throw out what they said before. When this happens it shows that you can always say something but it takes a lot to actually commit to being that great person. In a perfect world, we wouldn’t need to use social experiments to make people choose to make good actions but since we do not live in that perfect world some people have to push others to take that step to be a good person. If everyone took the time to think about everything that they do before they did it, it might be a different story. Make sure that you treat others the way you would want to be treated and remember that actions definitely do speak louder than words.

Christmas around the world When December comes, people automatically think of Christmas, but do they know about other December holidays? December consists of many religious holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Also many people do not know what these holidays are about.

Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a holiday celebrated by many African Americans from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. During this time, they celebrate their cultural heritage and traditional values.Gift giving is held on the last day to honor the creative spirit. Gifts are often homemade rather than purchased.

Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that lasts eight days, which starts on Dec. 6. This time is meant to celebrate the rededication of the Temple in 165 BC by the Maccabeus after its desecration by the Syrians. The symbol of this holiday is the successive kindling of eight lights which is called a Menorah. The Menorah is a nine branched candle holder that is lit during the eight day event. The ninth candle is used to light the other eight candle. The Menorah stands for light, wisdom, and divine inspiration. The old European custom of giving Hanukkah gifts, usually coins or money is still around, but the current trend of giving actualgifts really took shape in the 1950s.

As you can see, December is not just about Christmas, but it’s also about other religious and cultural holidays such as Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. It is a reminder to us all that it is not just about spending money and getting presents but spending time with family and friends – true gifts of life.

Is Christmas music becoming Is holiday music too “classic?” old? Isabella Bolish Staff Reporter

Some of the oldest, most well-known Christmas music has been playing on the radio around the same time every year since the early 1930s. A few of the oldest Christmas songs are “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” and “Winter Wonderland” both published in 1934. To this day, both songs are still widely known and prominent throughout the world even though they were released a little over 80 years ago. However, despite the same holiday music being broadcasted on the radio for decades, most people don’t seem to see Christmas music as being old and out of style. Freshman Madison White gives some insight as to why: “It’s timeless. It brings joy to people and it gets you in the mood to spend time with family and friends. It’s also an escape from modern day music.” Sophomore Daniel Jordan also adds: “Every year there’s Christmas, which makes the music relevant.” sophomore Daniel Jordan.

Every few years, “new” Christmas songs come out, but most of the time they are older songs like, Bill Crosby’s “White Christmas” from 1942 refurbished by a more “up to date” artist. Why not write new Christmas music instead of wringing out what has been passed for so long? How about our generation makes this holiday our own just like every other holiday? Today’s society is all about changing what is considered normal and making our own culture, we should not stop at Christmas! “Every year different holidays evolve and change, people shop on Thanksgiving, Halloween gets more gruesome, people eat Chinese food on Easter, yet Christmas is the exact same,” freshman Tayia Oglesby said.

While there are no hover boards in sight, there is still some really cool technology that has been invented since the 80s (not including modern computers). So maybe this list will give you some ideas for the upcoming Christmas season. So without further ado, let us welcome: The magic leapThis new technology smashes the dimensions of 3D and 2D and creates one of its own. This new technology is so infuriatingly secretive that it reminds you of a person waving a chocolate chip cookie in your face and never letting you get it. With dozens of videos on YouTube that have gone viral, there seems to be a pique interest in the product.

The idea according to Rio Caraeff, the company’s chief content officer, is that “..the world is your screen.” It is not one technology,

but rather several, where all of the different programs allow you to interact with the real-world while doing ordinary tasks you would do on a phone, such as watch YouTube tutorials or play video games. For example, instead of a simple YouTube tutorial with the help of this technology, you can project a “stove” with “hands” that personally shows you how to make a certain dish. Talk about user interaction! Samsung’s Gear VR headsetThis new technology also smashes the dimensional and limitations of 3D and 2D and

recreated the rules for virtual gaming. Who needs a console when you just need this handy device to actually transport yourself to a virtual reality? This is not the first virtual gaming console, but it is the newest and most affordable with a price of $99. According to techinsider. io, you can not only play basic videos games like PacMan” to “Sonic the Hedgehog,” you can also play over 20 different classic games on the arcade Oculus Arcade developed by the Facebook owned company. Also in the selection are new games cre-

ated just for this purpose like, “Land’s End”. This isn’t only for video games, according to techinsider.io, you can also play Netflix and watch movies with it. If you are feeling particularly lonely, with Facebook, you can connect with a friend no matter the distance and play games together in the virtual reality. You can also grab them to watch movies with you. But, unfortunately, until Jan., you can only combine this with a Samsung phone. Leap MotionRemember those touchscreen computers that used to be all the rage and the newest thing on the market? Well, according to critics and mostly anyone who took the bait, it was an epic fail. The new technology, leap motion plans to take another chance with the idea of not specifically using keyboards to work a computer. It allows you to scroll the web, zoom in maps, and even play different kinds of games, according to hongkiat.com. This technology coupled with the products like Samsung’s Gear VR headset will probably change the way we view the world and how we interact with it. So, while hover boards are out of the realm of possibility probably because of the limitations of physics, there is still new technology that will inspire future generations to come. It is a very interesting viewpoint to look at it as the future has indeed arrived.

Trash Talk with Tony and Troy (TTWTT): The College Football Playoff Top Four Thoughts Troy Frank Sports Editor Tony Dombrowski Sports Editor

Ever since 1998, the Bowl Championship Series Game was played in early January between the top two ranked teams in college football to decide who was going to be crowned the National Champion for that season. However in 2014, the committee decided to change up their “playoff,” by implementing a new format which opens more opportunities for more teams to win the championship.

Tony:

I mostly disagree with the fact that the committee does not select the right teams. While the placement might be odd on occasion, the committee gets it right most of the time. Even with a loss, I agree that some teams are better than others, and deserve higher placement. As for me, these top four teams are deserving of the top four. My current playoff rankings are: The fourth spot goes to the Oklahoma Sooners (11-1). The Sooners, led by possible Heisman Trophy winning junior quarterback Baker Mayfield, have huge wins against four ranked teams. Two of those were on the road, and two coming against conference rivals and championship contenders Baylor, Oklahoma State, and TCU. The outright Big 12 Champion, there is no reason Oklahoma should not be in the top four, and to me, serves as a possible threat to steal the championship at their lower seed. Number three for me is the Michigan State Spartans (12-1). Huge wins against ranked teams such as the Oregon Ducks, Michigan Wolverines (on the road), the Ohio State Buckeyes (on the road), and once undefeated Iowa in the Big 10 Championship Game,

along with the leadership shown from senior quarterback Connor Cook leaves Michigan State looking like a top team. However, their team has to play a tough game against Alabama if they really want a championship in the College Football Playoff semi-finals. Number two for me is the Clemson Tigers (13-0). The Tigers have impressed me this season with wins against Miami, North Carolina, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, and Florida State. The ACC Champions, are led by a possible Heisman Trophy winning quarterback in Deshaun Watson, and a leader in head coach Dabo Swinney, prove they should be where they are. But, I do not think they are the best team in College Football. My number one playoff ranked team is the Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1). Yes, the Tide are the best team in college football right now. Led by possible Heisman Trophy winning running back Derrick Henry, the SEC Champions have big wins against Georgia, LSU, Texas A&M, Florida and Mississippi State have earned them the top spot, even if the other SEC teams did not prove to be huge competition this year to the Tide.

The new format, the “College Football Playoff,” has the four best teams in the country face off on New Year’s Day in an elimination format with the winners of the semi- finals games taking on each other the following week to see who will be crowned champions. It seemed to be a success last year, but some people feel that the committee does not select the right teams to play in the playoff. Currently, the ranking sits as Clemson (13-0), Alabama (12-1), Michigan State (12-1), and Oklahoma, (11-1). Many critics and fans think these rankings are wrong.

Troy:

I do not like the way the committee ranks some teams by performance, and others by record. Before week 11, both Alabama and Ohio State had been putting up a greater performance than Clemson. Mind you, Ohio State was undefeated as well, but ranked worst of the three. The playoff is better than the old system, but the rankings should be left to math, not the human mind. Since I do not have a formula, however, I must use said human mind. At number four is the Oklahoma Sooners (11-1). I did have the undefeated Iowa Hawkeyes in this spot, but Oklahoma has just been way too impressive to leave them out of the top four. Big conference wins and an outright Big 12 Championship is rather impressive. Sitting at number three, I have the Michigan State Spartans (12-1). With wins against top opponents in Michigan and Ohio State, they have shown that not even their rivals, no matter how

good, can be defeated, even if they have to do it with no time remaining, *ahem*. They have, once again, proved to be a team worthy of some recognition. Despite my anger towards the Spartans, they do deserve a playoff position. At number two, I have the Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1). I know, I know. “How can they be number two if you said that they outperformed Clemson?” Well, I am not ranking my list based on recent performance, but rather the season’s cumulative performance. With the stupid loss to Ole’ Miss, in week three, they do not meet the requirements Clemson has met. And, with surprise to absolutely nobody, is Clemson (13-0). They are playing great right now. The fact that they are undefeated just cements their spot above the rest at numerouno. They are the best team in the nation and there is no changing that.
